Canfor’s lumber shipments are up 16 per cent in their second quarter. The company also reported operating income of $26 million for the second quarter of 2012, compared to an operating loss of $21.5 million for the first quarter. The positive variance primarily reflected improved results in the lumber segment, where stronger markets supported higher prices. Canfor reported net income attributable to shareholders of $4.5 million, or $0.03 per share, for the second quarter of 2012, compared to a shareholder net loss of $16.2 million, or $0.11 per share, for the first quarter of 2012 and shareholder net income of $2.1 million, or $0.01 per share, for the second quarter of 2011. For the six months ending June 30, 2012, the shareholder net loss was $11.7 million, or $0.08 per share, compared to net income of $9.1 million, or $0.06 per share, for the first half of 2011. The shareholder net income for the second quarter of 2012 included various items affecting comparability with prior periods, which had an overall net negative impact of $6.6 million, or $0.05 per share. After adjusting for such items, the company’s adjusted shareholder net income for the second quarter of 2012 was $11.1 million, or $0.08 per share, up $33.4 million, or $0.24 per share, from an adjusted shareholder net loss of $22.3 million, or $0.16 per share, for the first quarter of 2012. Adjusted shareholder net income for the second quarter of 2011 was $2.6 million, or $0.02 per share. Stronger demand is being attributed to market improvements in both North American and offshore markets. Additionally U.S. housing starts are on an upward trend averaging 739,000 units seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) up more than three per cent from the previous quarter.

Canadian housing starts were also up, increasing 12 per cent from the previous quarter, to almost 230,000 units SAAR. In China, markets improved as inventories returned to more normal levels following the inventory build early in the previous quarter. Japanese demand remained solid through the quarter. Pulp markets were relatively balanced heading into the quarter but saw signs of weakness as the quarter progressed. The company announced as a result of improved conditions lumber prices “rallied.” The average spruce, pine, fir (SPF) two X four price rose 11 per cent to US$295 per Mfbm, with similar increases seen for most other grades, while the spread between Western SPF structural and utility grade pricing also narrowed. Strong prices through May triggered a reduction in the export tax in June to 10 per cent for the first time this year. Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) prices also saw similar increases over the quarter. As a result, Canfor’s lumber sales realizations saw solid gains, with a higher value sales mix also having a positive impact. For northern bleach softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp, U.S. dollar sales realizations were up slightly with the average North America list price up US$30 to US$900 per tonne. Canadian dollar sales realizations across all solid wood and pulp products were positively impacted by a one per cent weakening of the average Canadian dollar. “The improvement in lumber prices and earnings reflected a modest increase in construction activity in North America and continued solid offshore demand for Western SPF lumber products,” Canfor CEO and president Don Kayne said. “The integration of these operations has gone very smoothly, and the startup of our upgraded Radium mill in the same south-east Kootenay region of B.C. remains on schedule for the fall of this year.”

City partnership potential with China Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom and guests, Sue-Ellen Miller (School District No. 28) and Coralee Oakes (Chamber of Commerce) shared their enthusiasm regarding the recent trip to China. The motive for the trip was to explore potential economic development opportunities in Quesnel, backed by Chinese investment and to champion the development of our school district’s international student exchange program.

Bill approved A request to review seven months of visa bills by Coun. Sushil Thapar was approved. Thapar, along with any other interested councillors, will meet with the director of finance at City Hall to review the city’s corporate visa bills and to gain an understanding of the process behind the corporate visas. These cards are mainly used for travel expenses, long term service awards, training courses and various small supplies where payment by credit card is required or is more efficient.

Infrastructure fund Prior to submitting the two grant applications as discussed at the July 16 Council meeting, more details on the proposed projects under the new Community

Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) were provided. As per the grant guidelines, grant funds cannot be used for feasibility and planning studies, so planning work on the Two Mile Flat trail would not qualify and further, gas tax funds could not be used as matching funds for the project. Council approved the recommendation to submit applications for the North Cariboo Multi-Centre project in the amount of $4 million and for the trail rehabilitation project in the amount of $125,000. The CIIF supports reinvestment in existing community infrastructure and suggests that projects requesting less than $250,000 will receive priority. The city would be required to match any funding received.

MLA Musings

Promise of More Transparency Welcome In a scathing report last week, the Auditor General of British Columbia revealed that the Legislative Assembly account, which amounts to about $70 million per year, is not being managed to the same standards required of every other public body. The Legislative account covers Legislative staff; the grounds keeping and maintenance of the Legislative buildings; the operating expenses of the political party caucuses and the Independents’ legislative ofďŹ ces; MLAs’ constituency ofďŹ ces; and the travel expenses of individual MLAs. The account is supposed to be managed by the Legislative Assembly Management Committee (LAMC), which is chaired by the Speaker and consists of the Government and Opposition House Leaders and Caucus Chairs. There is a huge degree of hypocrisy in the fact that the political leadership of the elected members of the Legislative Assembly would not hold themselves and the spending of all MLAs to the same high standard that they hold the civil service. It is also extremely troubling that this same Committee hasn’t dealt with this issue since it was warned about it by the Auditor General in 2007. This week LAMC ďŹ nally met to address this issue, and they had a long overdue conversation with the Auditor General about what steps are needed to ďŹ x these problems. Among the promised changes will be public reporting of MLA expenses and structural changes to LAMC that will see it operate in a more public and accountable manner. Last September I started posting my travel expenses on my web page (www. bobsimpsonmla.ca), and I plan to start posting the expenses associated with both my Legislative and constituency ofďŹ ces ahead of the timeline proposed by LAMC. It’s important to note that the Auditor General’s report does not suggest MLAs are misusing their ofďŹ ce accounts or travel expenses. I believe the checks and balances are already in place to avoid misuse of these funds, and that’s why it shouldn’t be an issue for us to report on them in a completely transparent manner as soon as possible.

Staples drive for school supplies DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter Staples is once again gearing up for the Back To School season and is hoping to make the experience easier on some less fortunate students. Doug Gore, business support manager at Staples, said this will be the fifth year the Quesnel location has participated in the event. “Staples in Quesnel has been putting on the School Supply Drive since we opened,” he said. Nationwide, more than 320 Staples locations are participating in the drive this year. Although all school supplies are accepted, Gore said they prefer monetary donations. “We prefer cash donations so individual families can get the proper supplies for their children’s specific needs,” he explained. If you would prefer to donate school supplies instead of making a cash donation, Gore said some supplies are more in

Quesnel goes directly to local students.” To supplement donations made in store, Staples has been planning an event to help raise more funds. “Every year we have hosted an event outside of Staples in Quesnel,” Gore said. “In past years, it consisted of a dunk tank with local dignitaries and a barbecue. “This year our event is Aug. 25 with our sponsors.” One of those sponsors, Big Brothers Big Sisters Quesnel, is the administrator of the donations made in Quesnel and they take no administration fee. At this year’s event, Gore said they plan on having a Fun Fair theme. “There will be games and prizes for the kids, such as wheel of fortune, a fish pond, bean bag toss and a basketball throw,” Gore explained. The event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. For further information, call Gore at Staples, 250-7470188.

Karaoke winner chosen during Billy Barker Days DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter Quesnel’s So You Think You Can Sing competition culminated in a two-part final during Billy Barker Days. The Royal Canadian Legion hosted the event, which saw contests every Friday leading up to the final. Winners from previous weeks were invited to the final on Friday night of Billy Barker Days where the finalists were whittled down to 12 who were invited back to perform Saturday, after which three winners were chosen. The singers were judged on four criteria: singing in key, singing in rhythm, singing the words clearly and crowd reaction. Straight From The Heart Music supplied the karaoke services throughout the competition and in the end, Stephen Dobson beat out the other contestants with his rendition of Boot Scootin Boogie, originally a Brooks and Dunn tune. Julie Joly and Nathan Pontius rounded out the top three singing Jolene and La Bamba, respectively. Prizes included vouchers for several hotels, restaurants and activities such as rafting, train rides and tattoos. For more information about Straight From The Heart karaoke services, contact Deb, songs4u@telus.net.

s this newspaper went to press, vast swaths of India were only just having power restored after three days of blackouts. The massive power outage in the massively populated country has led to various blame games and left up to 600-million people with a cruel reminder of just how reliant we are on the powergrid system. Trains were left stationary on tracks, factories were brought to a standstill and the sweltering heat became all the more sweltering for those with no electricity. The June edition of National Geographic has as its cover story the possibility that intense solar storms on the Sun could impact much on earth that relies on computerization. From GPS systems to the power grid, the article (and similar documentaries on PBS and elsewhere) warned if Earth experiences what it did during an event in the 1800s, we could be sent back to a literal dark age. And, imagining just how fast that genial neighbour can turn into a raving, violent survivalist is a frightening read. If nothing else, the blackouts in India, like earthquakes closer to home, should offer all of us a reminder to be prepared for that day when our phones don’t work, our ovens won’t turn on, our furnace won’t fire up and the food in our fridges will start to spoil. Do you have an emergency kit in your home? If the power went out right now, do you have enough food and water and supplies to last you a week? A month? Probably not, which is why we should all use the India blackouts as a reminder to take a few hours to prepare for the worst. –Kamloops This Week

A prize that lasts a lifetime M

emories are made and stars are born at the Olympics and even someone who’s been a star since birth can shine bright enough to leave a lasting impression. The Queen of England proved that recently when she officially became a Bond Girl with her dramatic entrance at the opening ceremony of the London Summer Olympic Games, joining the excited spectators in the coliseum. The Queen herself, however, didn’t look all that excited. “She looks mad,” my 11-year-old son said when the cameras showed her without a smile in the audience several times. “Give her a break, Sam,” my nine-year-old daughter replied. “She’s old and she just jumped out of a plane, didn’t she?” While the Queen’s acting debut will stand out as a highlight for me, I know there will be many more to

On A Brighter Note enjoy as well. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat is always on full display when the world comes together to present the best of the best. My first memory of falling in love with the spectacular event was back in 1976 when I first laid eyes on a 14-year-old girl named Nadia Comaneci. I remember being in the living room of my house, sitting cross-legged on the floor, watching our old black and white TV after my mom had called me in to see the women’s gymnastics. I was immediately amazed, not just at their beauty and skill, but at their pint-sized

us. What’s breathtaking about all of the Olympic athletes that manage to make it to this level of greatness is what we will never see: their grueling journeys in getting there. Whether they’ve come from the ghetto or royalty, their passion, perseverance and unwavering will to win is inspiring and motivating to Olympian hopefuls, as well as to the millions of people like me. “As simple as it sounds,” Mary Lou Retton, another Olympic superstar once said. “We all must try to be the best person we can: by making the best choices, by making the most of the talents we’ve been given.” I have no doubts that Queen Elizabeth, and my daughter Daisy Elizabeth, would agree. I hadn’t seen or heard of her before, but I would soon never forget her when she became the first gymnast to score a perfect ten and instantly became an international superstar. For years my friends and I would pretend to be Nadia, re-enacting her sheer brilliance in our imaginations. I was nine years old at the time – the same age my daughter Daisy is now. A budding tumbler herself, it’s not surprising that her favourite competitions to watch are the gymnastics, even with the men and their “gross hairy armpits.” “Seriously,” she said covering her eyes more than once when different athletes reached for the rings. “That is not attractive!” Yet soon enough they wowed her with their power and precision and she’d just sit in awe with the rest of

Thapar, prepared to be open and honest Editor: How unfortunate that council yet again has chastised Coun. Sushil Thapar for speaking out. Yes, he should, and has, apologized for his disrespectful language towards other councillors and the mayor. However, he is the only one that is prepared to be open and transparent with the taxpayers who pay their allowances and

expect honesty and fiscal responsibility, which I feel seems to be sadly lacking at the present time. I can clearly recall when this mayor was herself on council and was disruptive and disrespectful towards Mayor Nate Bello. What goes around, comes around. Whatever one’s own beliefs and opinions, Bello was always willing to enter into open and

interested discussion. He never demanded that everyone agree with him. Nor do I recall a time when he made any unprofessional comments concerning other members of council to city staff, which I was certainly subjected to by this mayor during my time at City Hall. This council should realize that without disagreement, no change

or growth is possible. They should also be better prepared for council meetings, which might mean reading the agenda prior to Monday and even raising questions beforehand with staff concerned, so they have a better understanding of the issues. I sincerely hope that rather than isolating Thapar, they make more of an effort to understand what he is trying to do,

They should also be prepared as individuals to stand up for what is right for the organization and for the community. and be willing to provide the taxpayers with more information and answers as to how they are

spending the taxes they raise. It should not be necessary to continually obtain this information only through Freedom of Information requests. They should also be prepared as individuals to stand up for what is right for the organization and for the community. That is what they were elected to do. Meriel Wild Quesnel

Road ready Heather doing a stretch in the Washington wheat fields between Wilbur and Grand Coulee, WA. Chris Hartridge photo

The Hartridges on the road again in Washington State

T

his year’s cycle tour takes Heather and I into the neighbour’s backyard. Washington state has always been a favourite destination, primarily due to the warm, no, hot summer weather that can be found in the central part of the state around Lake Roosevelt. We’ve been coming here since our kids were young. This year we have two weeks to make a loop and our planned tour fits the bill. Thanks to the generous hospitality from our friend Helene, we started in Oliver and crossed the border just south of Osoyoos. Unusually cool weather was in store for our first day, which is actually a good thing. Even though we’ve been putting in the time riding this spring and summer, we chose to keep the distances short for the first few days. Our first destination was the busy little town of Tonasket. The town is named after Chief Tonasket of

The Hartridges

Back of Beyond the Okanogan people, a local leader from this area who assumed the status of grand chief of the American Okanogan after the drawing of the U.S.Canada border by the Oregon Treaty of 1846, assuming a leadership role in Okanogan territory formerly held by Chief Nicola who lived north of the border. Like Quesnel, forestry and agriculture keep things humming here as does tourism. We stayed overnight behind the Tonasket Tourist Centre. The office is also a Warmshowers host – a world wide non-profit organization with members who are typically touring cyclists or just people

who want to support those who are travelling on bicycles. Check out www.warmshowers. org. The Tourist Centre offered a cool grassy spot, washrooms and free WiFi. Warmshowers hosts don’t generally charge anything as it’s kind of a reciprocal thing. We’ve had a number of wonderful people from around the world stay at our place in Quesnel and we’ve had our share of ‘warm showers’ as well. The Wauconda Pass was our first real climb on our second day of the tour. It had warmed up considerably so we got an early start to beat the heat. We arrived in Republic to news of a huge storm that swept through the area three days earlier. It was the same storm that resulted in the tragic loss of a young boy in Grand Forks. We chose to stay in the community campground but there was no water and no power. We

didn’t really miss the power, but the water is essential. Fortunately, we had met a couple from Virginia who offered to transport some water to the campground for us. We had met them at the famous Wauconda Cafe earlier. There are friendly people everywhere. The next morning we headed south towards the Colville Nation lands where the worst damage from the storm occurred. The storm’s path was indiscriminate. In this area White Pine is the predominant species and whole forests were flattened. Mature trees two to three feet in diameter were snapped off, generally half way up the tree. The fallout took down power lines and smashed houses, trailers and anything that stood in its way. When we arrived in Keller, home base for the local government, it was a scene of emergency preparedness in full swing. Portable accommodation, fresh

water, sanitation and hot showers were available. Again, lucky for us the main grocery store was open and water was available there as well. We stopped for a break and met some of the local people who were there when the storm hit. Everyone described it as incredibly scary – like a war zone. We then headed to the ferry across Lake Roosevelt. Part of Route 21, this is a free service and only takes a few minutes. It dropped us off near our destination for the night, the Keller Ferry Campground. It was a busy place but we found a great spot and set up camp for the night. On the road at 6 a.m. the next morning as we had a 12-mile hill to climb and had no desire to be doing it later on when it was hot. The ride was truly wonderful with the sun rising, a cool sage breeze blowing and lots of rattlesnakes. Yup, six of ‘em.

All dead though, from being at the wrong place at the wrong time. We made it to Wilbur for our second breakfast and the chance to stock up with more water. Wilbur might as well be a town in Alberta. Grain elevators and tractors on the main drag makes one feel like they’ve been transported to another place. Only another 32 km to go before we get to see the damn dam. The Grand Coulee Dam is quite a remarkable place to visit. Built during the Great Depression, it put thousands of people to work. The engineering is phenomenal for its time. Holding back the Columbia River is no mean feat. The lake just above the dam will be our camp and playground for the next three days. Can’t wait. LITERARY

Author to launch book at ArtsWells Susan Safyan, associate editor of Arsenal Pulp Press, was volunteering to edit memoirs for the 25th anniversary of Vancouver Folk Festival in 2003 when she realized she could do the same thing for the community of Wells. Safyan lived in Wells for five years in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s during the hippy hay days in that isolated mining town. She knew there was a gunny sack of hilarious, outrageous, magically compelling and often irreverent stories of those times so she started collecting them on her regular returns to the community over the next eight years. She compiled them into a book that hit the bookshelves this summer. At the Arts Wells Music Festival this weekend Safyan will launch All Roads Lead to Wells: Stories of the Hippie Days, published by Caitlin Press. The event takes place at Aug 4, at 5:30 p.m. in the Sunset Theatre. The 1970s was a unique time when a whole generation of young people abandoned the dreams and bastions of their parents and western society and headed for remote corners of the hinterland like Wells, to recreate their own culture. “I loved those amazing end of the road stories,” says Safyan, who was working for a plastic letter manufacturer in Los Angeles in 1978 when she met a handsome lumberjack from Wells. Within a year she had gone to visit him, then moved in with him in his rustic cabin. Besides telling stories of Wells, she says the book is meant to evoke the times of the hippy drop-out generation. On the broader scale she says All Roads Lead to Wells reflects what was happening in the macrocosm across North America. In her research Safyan collected stories that occurred before she arrived in Wells, when Brian Humber and Dale Ruckle established Filthy Larry’s Leather Shoppe in the late ‘60s. She describes the resistance the newcomers encountered with the old guard who considered them too weird and how things kind of mellowed out over time as they discovered the things they had in common. Safyan will be in Quesnel to sign copies of her book and for a presentation Aug. 9, 7 p.m. in council chambers, City Hall as part of Quesnel Museum’s Heritage Speaker series. Books will be for sale and admission is by donation. – submitted by Sage Birchwater

Get your foxy on with performance art and music Aug. 11 Unseemly Evenings is once again presenting a musical and performance extravaganza, Aug. 11 at Gold Pan City Dance. Headlining the event, the Vancouver-based band High Society is an unstoppably dramatic rockin’ soul and blues group, which will fill your eyes and ears with euphoric excitement and inspiration. They have been building a regional reputation for close to two years playing a blend of R&B, soul, blues, folk, hip hop and jazz. High Society is currently engaged in a summer threemonth tour. Fronted by the incendiary Adam Farnsworth on keys and vocals, he shares the limelight with the beautiful, inimitable, Chelsea Johnson on vocals and guitars. Their solid rhythmic foundation is held down by Cory Sweet on baritone saxophone, tuba and various wind instruments and Kenan Sungur on drums, upright bass and vocals. The evening will be punctuated with shenanigans and chaos said event organizer Jessie Herman. “It’s going to be a foxy night so get your foxy on, whatever that means to you,” she said with a twinkle in her eye. “It’s a chance to dress up or down, skin is smiled on. Expect the unexpected.” Audiences will be amazed by the performance of Vile Pole Arts, a local duo who have competed and performed in B.C. and Alberta, most recently in the Alberta Pole Fitness Championships. They combine extraordinary athleticism with stunning showmanship savvy. Rounding out the show, Bottoms Up Barely Burlesque is a simply delightful and delicious dance ensemble that will tease you and please you. Experience these burlesque beauties and fabulous French men for a performance of unseemly proportions. Then, just when you thought it might be time to retire for the night, D.J. Dilemna will keep the bootie shaking into the wee hours of the morning. Early bird tickets at $20 are available at BoPeep Boutique until the day before the show, Aug. 10. Remaining tickets will be available the day of the show for $25 also at BoPeep Boutique. For information on the show find it on facebook (BottomsUpBarelyBurlesque) or call 250-255-1171.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Triathlons are a three sport marathon by definition and those three sports are typically run, bike, swim, but the Billy Barker Day Triathlon was a little different. Based out of Legion Beach on Dragon Lake, each event went out from Legion Beach went up, around and came back for the transition. Greg Strebel, one of the organizers of the event, wasn’t there 32 years ago when everything started, so he doesn’t know precisely why the decision was made, but he does know that it changes the event. “It gives more opportunity to people who don’t usually do triathlons,” Strebel said. The swimming portion can be difficult, because getting tired in the middle of a swim and taking a break is much harder than on dry land, but canoeing opens the field to people who might feel intimidated by swimming. This opened it up to casual teams, including a five person family team

rowing together in a large canoe. It also turns the triathlon into a team event, with the main category being a two person team that rides together in the first portion, then paddle together in the same canoe, before setting off, somewhat independently on the run. The run is scored as an average between the team mates, so teams tend to spread out in the event. And that spread is exactly what allowed this year’s team of John Courtney and Karoly Peter to win. In the bike and on the water Courtney and Peter were neck and neck with Glen Boudreau and Jason Jacobs, but Courtney eschewed socks in the transition and set out on the run, leaving his partner behind, knowing that any second he could gain would go towards their average. “I had a really fast transition so I had a really good gap,” said Courtney. Despite the fact Courtney says he’s not much of a runner, he was able to defend that gap and stay in front. With Courtney and Peter’s average time, the team was able to take first overall and first in the open men with an averaged time of 1:19:18. Boudreau and Jacobs

took second overall and in the open men with an average time 1:22:59. Chris Elden and Ryan Elden took third overall, and first in the family class, with a 1:23:40. Third in the open men, Steve Dimond and Dan Morrisey finished with an averaged time of 1:36:14. Lou Brisco and Rietta Brisco took first in the open women category with a team time of 1:42:25. followed by Pam Beaudoin and Jillian Stockburger finishing in 2:06:11. In third, Lai Englander and Dianna Embleton finished with an averaged time of 2:16:55. Bert Sturt and Paul Mednis represented for the masters men category with a 1:29:38, for a first in their category. In the masters women, Bridget Nowakowski and Michelle Klapatiuk took the category with a team time of 1:50:31. Brendan Reiter and Wyllie Mednis teamed up to take the juniors category with a 1:38:55. Leah Peddle and Michelle Domreis took second with an averaged time of 2:06:39. In the masters mixed, Edie Ferris and Ray Ferris took the top honours with a

team time of 1:47:43. Taking second, Bill and Darlene Osborne teamed up for a time of 1:51:06. Ryan and Chris Elden took first in the family category with a team time of 1:23:40. George and Graham Paul with an averaged time of 1:29:56 placed second, followed by Jake and Mark Courtney in third with 1:44:10. Andrea and Kevin Sturt took the top spot in the open mixed with an averaged time of 1:34:13. Ashley Briggs-Hilliard and Chris Hilliad took second with a team time of 1:50:29, followed by Janet Ortner and Jamie O’Flynn at 1:52:48. Steven Yager took the top spot in the unlimited class all by himself, with a final time of 1:43:32. Stephanie Huska and Amber Kronyk took second, running together to finish at 1:47:24. Daniel, Michael, Darryl and Lee Greenough with Cathy Giles all teamed up in a big canoe to take third in the unlimited category with a team time of 1:50:44. Strebel and the organizers would like to thank the Legion for the beach and all the participants, volunteers and the audience for making the event as memorable as it was.

“Remember the Alamo”

The long journey to Europe JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter

A

s you read these opening lines, Cheyann Newman is in Italy playing the U20 Italian Hockey team, or perhaps in Austria, playing hockey there, gadding about Europe for the first time in her life with a team of girls ready to take on the world, or at least the world’s hockey teams. Not only will she be playing against European teams, but in an exhibition tournament, she will be playing on a team made from players from all over Europe. And though traveling overseas and playing international level hockey can be tough on the nerves as well as the body, the excitement of the trip trumps all the rest for Newman. “I’m more excited than nervous because I love listening to different languages and accents and I’ll get to know some of them, so I think it’ll be cool,” she said. “I’m hoping to trade jerseys with them. We’ll trade pins and jerseys, so I can bring back some jerseys from different countries.” Newman has been practicing for two months with the touring team. The journey there, though, was less than straightforward. Newman was part of the bantam tier three Thunder who won their playoffs at the beginning of this year. But when the organizers of the teams going overseas began their selections, Newman wasn’t part of their considerations. It wasn’t until the coaches asked the girls if they knew anyone else who played at that calibre that a

For the record Gus Cameron Gymkhana was mistitled as a memorial event. It is but the Gus Cameron Gymkhana. We appologize for any misunderstanding it may have caused.

friend of Newman’s from Prince George piped up. None of the organizers knew she existed because Newman plays with the boys and the coaches only had numbers for the girls league. The Newman household was contacted not long after hockey season ended and Newman’s stats were sent away for consideration. After a bit of waiting, she was selected to join the team. Just over two months ago, in late May, the practices began. But, being in northern B.C., nothing is quite that simple. A western Canada team contains players from larger land mass than any European country (barring Russia which can’t make up its mind what continent it wants to be in) which brings along that uniquely northern Canadian problem: distance. The team practices in Edmonton, a 10hour drive Newman and her mother made twice a month, for about two months, to be a part of the practices. Though the weekend trips put a strain on Newman, the effort and the trail is worth it, because now Newman and her mother are traveling in Europe. The team has a few preliminary matches to help meld them as a team before they enter the tournament as well as time on the plane and buses to get to know each other better which should help the on-ice play. The challenge after that will be finding

their stride against teams with very different methods of play. “I know the Russians are fast and Finland has very good stick handling skills. But I think each team is going to be quite different, how they play. It’s going to be quite interesting how their game methods play against ours,” Newman said. European hockey while not an entirely new sport, is different enough that the girls will be playing catch up when they get there. One of the largest differences is the size of the rink. The Euro spec rink is bigger than a North American rink, which means the girls must get used to the size not only in their strategies, but also physically. The refs, as well, have a bit of a different interpretation of the rules than in Canada, said Newman. The trip itself promises to be tiring as well, as they have practice, games, traveling and as much touring as possible to fit into the two weeks. But that doesn’t concern Newman, as there will be time for naps on the bus and she’s had a lot of practice getting up early and making trips around the country during her time shuttling back and forth to Edmonton. What does worry her, however, is the same thing that all international travelers worry about: jet lag. “The time zone’s going to be really difficult. It’s a nine

hour time difference in Italy. So I’m really worried about getting jet lag,” Newman said. That’s all compounded for Cheyann, by the fact that she’s been playing with the boys for years. A game style she says is a lot more physical, but a little slower she said. But despite the list of difficulties the team has in front of them, Newman is confident the team will do well

and is looking to nab a medal at the end of the tournament. Beyond that, she’s hoping the breadth of play will help her broaden her horizons and make her a better hockey player. “I think it’ll be good because I’ll see new players and new methods of play. I think it will help my level of play and it’ll be a great experience too,” Newman said. But for now, she’s enjoying the ride.

Here & There Mexico still strong vacation destination for Canadians

M

exico is still high on the list of Canadian travellers looking for a luxury all-inclusive vacation. So when we were looking at a getaway for our family, we chose Puerto Vallarta. And a great choice it was, with perfect weather, a delightful resort, fabulous staff and a great location. We stayed at the Buenaventura Resort, Mexican-owned, right in old Puerto Vallarta. It was nice that it was owned locally as we met many vacationing Mexican families who proved to be delightful and charming. Authentic Mexican cuisine was delicious and we came to look forward to the various themed poolside lunches and evening dinners. The Buenaventura staff were friendly as well as professional and welcoming. The serving staff always remembered you, whether it was bringing your favourite creamer for your morning coffee on the patio or your preferred beverage as you laid by the pool. Sugar Ray, the entertainment director kept everyone busy with fun daytime and evening activities, specialized for children, adults and seniors too. Another great feature was the location just a few blocks from The Malecon, a beautiful stretch of lovely stores and art shops. This beautiful stretch of beach was along a roadway closed to traffic so we could stroll in comfort and enjoy the performers , painters and sand castles on the adjacent beach. We were lucky to experience fireworks and the performance of a military band while we enjoyed a walk one beautiful evening. On the advice of many of the guests, we also walked to Pipi’s restaurant near the Malecon and were able to enjoy an authentic Mariachi Band, amazing food and the best guacamole table service ever. Puerto Vallarta offers lots to do – that is if you can tear yourself away from poolside and your pina coladas! Zip lining, parasailing, whale watching, sail boating, evening dinner tours and the ever popular Rhythms of the Night – to name just a few. Your tour operator will be available to assist you with purchasing tours that are perfect for you and your family. For Canadians, Captain Don’s, a local pub just a few blocks away made sure the hockey game was on and, to be sure, a more eclectic group of people you would be hard pressed to find. The good news for residents of northern B.C. is that getting to Puerto Vallarta has never been easier. Air Canada Vacations worked great for our family with three of us leaving from Prince George and two from Vancouver and Victoria. We were able to meet in Vancouver, enjoy a lovely lunch and still catch our plane for Puerto Vallarta. WestJet Vacations and Signature Vacations will now be offering seasonal direct flights from Prince George – worry free travel for those who would rather not navigate large airports and worry about gates. Good news for many travellers who want to get away from the fall and winter weather! Deb Quick is a Flight Centre Associate who operated a home-based Travel Agency in Quesnel. To find out how you can plan your next sun vacation – call Deb at 250-9925169.

Their beautifully landscaped front yard provided a perfect spot for the surprise wedding of Curt and Nicole (Schilling niece) Klassen from Vernon held on July 28 a small ceremony shared with family. Their backyard lent for great entertainment of all kinds for the younger and not so younger generations. Tents were set up to provide shade or rain from getting in the way of enjoying dining outdoors. The delicious snacks and meals never stopped coming, (which is typical of a Woolley get together). The great nieces especially enjoyed playing on the well landscaped lawns along with the enchanted forest complete with a water fall to cool oŊ their little hands and feet. The wild life from a Robin feeding her brood to the bucks that casually strolled through the yard was exciting for the families from Vancouver. Many past memories were shared, while many new ones were made. Thank you again for all your hard work. Love from your family We love you
