The Cranbrook RecPlex will now be known as Western Financial Place, a move that garners $750,000 for the complex. Submitted The largest sports and entertainment venue in the Kootenays has a new name. Today, the Cranbrook RecPlex became Western Financial Place, in recognition of the facility’s new sponsor, Western Financial Group (Western). Western—an insurance and ¿nancial services company based in Alberta—won naming rights for the next 10 years and plans to work with the City of Cranbrook, the facility operators, and the company’s regional partner, Falkins Insurance Group (Falkins), to build on the longstanding tradition of providing the residents of Cranbrook and surrounding areas a ¿rst-class destination for entertainment, recreation, and community involvement. The 10-year partnership agreement, including naming rights and other sponsorship and usage commitments, totals $750,000, including an advance of $500,000. “We’re delighted to make a commitment of this magnitude to the people of Cranbrook and the Kootenays,” said Western Financial Group CEO Scott Tannas. “Our company is rooted in the values that westerners cherish, and we intend to be a part of this terri¿c city and region for a long time to come.” “We’re thrilled to have the support of Western

and Falkins in this venture and in our community,” said Cranbrook Mayor, Wayne Stetski. “They’re only going to enhance what we can do with the building and bring to the people throughout our city and region.” Director of Leisure Services, Chris New added, “Securing a naming rights holder is an important step in ensuring long term success for our operations. Not only does the agreement provide ¿nancial support, but the relationship with Western Financial Group will open up more opportunities to promote the facility, develop community activities, and secure additional special events for our region.” The complex, which opened October 13, 2000, has a lap and wave pool, racquet ball/squash courts, an ice rink that’s home to the Kootenay Ice Western Hockey League team, and hosts world class events, such as the upcoming Bob Dylan concert. Western Financial Place signage will be unveiled on the building and ice later this summer, and the Falkins Group will participate in sponsorship and branding opportunities throughout the building. As part of its succession plan, Falkins has begun the process of joining Western Financial Group. “For nine years, we’ve been planning for the

next phase of our 115 year old business, and we’re excited to be partnering with Western because they share our values and culture and know what’s important to people here in the west,” said Bob McGill, CEO, Falkins. Mayor Stetski said, “Planning ¿rst started for a community recreation center back in 1993. Seven years and 5,000 signatures later, that dream became a reality. Today, we take another bold step forward by solidifying Western Financial Place as a premier destination for the people of Cranbrook and everyone throughout the Kootenays.” The City of Cranbrook, British Columbia is a thriving community with an exciting future and proud history. Cranbrook was founded in 1898 with the arrival of the Crowsnest Railway and has evolved into the supply centre of the East Kootenay region. 18,500 people live in the city, and nearly 80,000 live in the surrounding area. Cranbrook’s magni¿cent location and ¿rst-class facilities also attract thousands of visitors each year who participate in cultural and outdoor activities, such as live theatre, hockey, hiking, boating, ¿shing, cycling and snowmobiling. Western Financial Group is a western Canada based, diversi¿ed, ¿nancial services company serving more

than 600,000 customers. Founded in 1996 and headquartered in High River, Alberta, Western provides insurance, banking and investment products and services through more than 120 of¿ce locations, the Internet (www.western¿nancialgroup.ca) and other distribution channels. With a skilled team of approximately 1,500 employees, and backed by the strong resources of its owners, Western is committed to building the strongest ¿nancial services company in western Canada. Western Financial Group is a subsidiary of Desjardins Group, the leading cooperative ¿nancial group in Canada. Falkins Insurance Group has been providing peace of mind to its customers for 115 years. The brokerage began selling insurance in the Gold Rush town of Fort Steele, British Columbia in 1897 and relocated to Cranbrook in the early 1900s, where it continued to expand and meet the needs of the region for the following 100 years. Falkins Insurance is the largest general insurance brokerage in the Kootenays, with 11 of¿ces and more than 100 professionals. The company sells personal, travel, auto, and commercial insurance and operates its own claims service.

Hot springs re-open after large mudslide Submitted Following the dramatic mudslide that sent massive debris Àow through Fairmont Creek and disrupted the entire village Fairmont Hot Springs is re-opening this on August 3. The re-opening comes just in time as the resort town pushes to get the word out that Fairmont Hot Springs is back and better than ever. “We were very fortunate that most of the debris Àow was restricted to Fairmont Creek. The Lodge, the pools, the RV park and two out of three golf course were largely unaffected,” says Marke Dickson, director of sales and marketing, Fairmont Hot Springs, “but it did bury the source of our hot springs and wipe out the road to the RV park.” The resort town, where almost all its residents work in tourism, depends on a busy summer season for its livelihood. The mudslide forced the resort to close for two weeks while debris was removed from the natural hot spring boxes, located up the Fairmont Creek so that the hot water could be funneled back into the pools. Geotechnical experts have Àown the site and the creek’s catchment and indicated that there is little risk of further debris Àow or landslides. A new intake infraWILDSTONE

structure was installed to restore the Àow of hot water from the springs to the pools and a new water supply line was built from the reservoir to the lodge (the old supply lines were obliterated in the debris Àow) to service the Lodge and RV Park. Both Riverside and Creekside golf courses were untouched and have remained open. A few canyon hiking trails, the ski area and the Mountainside golf course and clubhouse are closed. The resort has been working with renowned Canadian golf course architect Doug Carrick on how to use deposited materials to improve impacted holes and expects Mountainside to be up and running again soon. Dickson continues, “We’ve been working dawn until dusk to reopen and we are literally bubbling with excitement. The Fairmont Hot Springs Lodge, the pools, RV Park and all associated outlets will re-open Friday. We’ve used the brief closure as an opportunity and our team has been hard at work shining, polishing, ¿xing and repairing all facilities to make the resort better than ever.” The human spirit is

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A5 amazing. The experience has really helped the community grow and pull together. We don’t just work here this is our home. We’ve been overwhelmed with help during this ordeal and would like to thanks guests, employ-

ees, contractors and the community for all their support. We are now working hard to get out our message: Fairmont Hot Springs is back and doing what is does best – providing visitors with a fantastic BC Rockies experience.”

Telus gives where they live for A Clear View

(Missing from photo Charlene Rothwell, Dave Cumming, Bud & Jean Lees, Eva Schafer) TELUS, its team members and its customers, through its Phones for Good program, raised $46,800 in support of East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign. “TELUS, their employees and especially the TELUS Community Ambassadors continue to be a major supporter of EKFH and health care facilities in all communities of the East Kootenay. This contribution

to our A Clear View campaign is tremendous and we truly are grateful,” explained EKFH’s Donna Grainger. The TELUS team serving Cranbrook brought their support for the digital mammography campaign, with a donation of $100 for every new TELUS Smartphone activated in the community of Cranbrook for the last six months which made great things happen for EKFH. EKFH has been work-

ing with TELUS throughout the digital mammography campaign and this contribution brings the fundraising total to just over $836,000. This major gift by TELUS is undoubtedly moving the project further ahead and demonstrates how these types of corporate investment gifts combined with public donations make the reality of bringing the best in breast cancer care to the region truly possible. At TELUS, they be-

lieve that in order to do well in business, they must do ‘good’ in the communities where they live, work and serve. The organization’s philosophy – we give where we live - is about TELUS and its team members sharing their generosity of spirit to make a meaningful difference in local communities. “This campaign in support of A Clear View not only quenched our customers’ thirst for new technology, but we

were also able to support a vital initiative in our community,” said James Letcher, East Kootenays TELUS manager. In this era of social awareness, consumers choose to make purchasing decisions and support businesses that contribute to the health and well-being of their local communities. Through its community giving programs, TELUS offers its customers product and service options that directly bene¿t local charities. In essence, every TELUS customer gives where they live. The A Clear View campaign has 83% of its pledges and donations to meet the 2-year, $1,000,000 fundraising goal. Recent garbage collection changes promote recycling Residents can expect changes to the amount of garbage allowed to be collected each week beginning September 1, 2012. Pending Council adoption of the Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw later this month, the maximum ¿ve (5) receptacle limit per household will be reduced to a maximum of three (3) receptacles per week per household. “The intent of the amendments to the bylaw is to further encourage recycling and composting, while reducing the amount of garbage going into our regional land¿ll,” says Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski. The Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw also limits the size of receptacles (either containers or bags) to 100 litres and receptacles cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms each. Garbage containers are to have a water tight cover and smooth rim, must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have ¿xed handles. Plastic bags are to be securely tied

closed at the top and be strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting. The bylaw also states that all garbage must be packaged up, cleanly and neatly. Garbage must not be loose inside the garbage containers in any manner or your garbage will not be collected. If plastic bags have been torn apart by rodents, dogs or other causes, it is solely the responsibility of the property owner/occupant to collect scattered garbage and refuse in order to place it in a new container/ plastic bag. For collection in excess of three garbage receptacles, including plastic bags, tags are available for purchase at City Hall for $1.50 per tag. Garbage should be placed out for collection by 7:30 a.m. on your collection day. Routes and pick up times may be changed without notice. For more information visit the City of Cranbrook website at www. cranbrook.ca, click on the ‘Residents’ tab, and click ‘Solid Waste Pickup’.

Painted wooden floors A painted wooden Àoor can bring new life to any room, but don’t limit yourself to just one colour. Explore the art of metamorphosis and create a diamond pattern for a unique look. Your ¿rst steps in this renovation project are to clean the Àoor and then apply a coat of black wood stain. To start creating the pattern, draw a line on the Àoor with a piece of chalk right across the centre of the room, running parallel to a straight wall. Decide on the size of your diamond pattern by ensuring that each angle that intersects the base line forms an exact 90° angle. Mark the diamonds to be painted and demarcate the individual borders with masking tape. Cut the corners of the tape in such a way as to obtain precise angles. Apply the different colours of paint to each element of the pattern with a paintbrush. Epoxy-based paint is recommended for Àoors. After you have painted your pattern, remove the masking tape around each diamond as soon as you’ve ¿nished so that you can clean up any wet paint that has run under the tape. Finish the wood with ¿ve coats of varnish, leaving each coat to dry for at least an hour.

Farmers’ Market injects nearly $1 million into city Cranbrook Farmers’ Market is a signi¿cant economic player in the local economy, injecting nearly $1 million annually into the local economy, according to a recent study. “Although people know the market is a great place to buy fresh, local food,” said Erna Jensen-Shill, the Cranbrook Farmer’s Market manager, “the results of this study help us communicate to others how valuable the farmers’ market is to our community.” About 41,000 people visit the farmers’ market annually and on the day of the study, July 14, 2012, about 1,716 people visited the market. About 420 of these visitors participated in the survey. Over half of shoppers visit the market either ‘regularly’ (almost weekly) or ‘frequently’ (2-3 times per month). Interestingly, says Jensen-Shill, 68.8% of respondents said they would do additional shopping at neighbouring businesses that day”, demonstrating the impact of the

Market on downtown area businesses. Top reasons for visiting the market included access to fresh, locally grown produce, supporting local area producers, and the community and cultural experience found at the market. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market is participating in a province-wide study of the economic

and community bene¿ts of farmers markets. “Farmers’ markets continue to serve as the face of farming in BC,” said Elizabeth Quinn, Executive Director of the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets. “There has been signi¿cant growth in the number and vitality of farmers’ markets in BC and it is important to understand not

only what they contribute but also how much they contribute to local neighbourhoods, cities, and towns,” she explained. The study is being carried out by the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets in collaboration with Dr. David Connell, a professor in the School of Environmental Planning at the

University of Northern British Columbia. Financial assistance was provided by participating farmers’ markets, Agriculture and AgriFood Canada, the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC, and Vancity Community Foundation.
