Hampers are ready at food bank City responds immediately after fire By Dale Bass and Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTERS editor@kamloopsthisweek.com
SHARING CULTURES Tk’emlups Indian Band chief Shane Gottfriedson (centre) leads a procession into the 33rd annual Kamloopa Powwow, which drew crowds to share in the celebration of First Nations culture from Friday, Aug. 3, to Sunday, Aug. 5. Among the many events were dancing and drumming competitions. Allen Douglas/KTW
It will be business as usual — almost — as the Kamloops Food Bank prepares to hand out about 125 hampers to clients today (Aug. 7). That fact, said executive director Bernadette Siracky, is a testament to the determination not only of her staff but of the community. A fire at the Wilson Street agency on Thursday, Aug. 2, not only destroyed much of the food stored there but made the building itself off-limits to staff as police and other investigators continue looking into the suspected arson. Siracky said about 1,400 pounds of food was collected on the weekend from donation boxes at local grocery stores. Safeway donated another $2,500 worth of food. Big Steel Box dropped off storage containers for the food bank to use for the month while cleanup continues in the building. “Mike Miltimore [of Lee’s Music] even came down and gave us a cheque,” Siracky said. Nine-year-old Christian Beatty organized his own food drive at the Juniper Market and Sahali Superstore. “This community is just so wonderful. It’s made this easier to
deal with.” Siracky and staff were in the parking lot next to the building on Monday, Aug. 6, putting together hampers to hand out today. She said insurance will eventually cover the lost food, as well as damage to the building, but the insurer is also conducting its own investigation and an adjuster has yet to complete an assessment. An estimated 60 to 80 boxes of food containing anywhere from 3,900 to 5,200 pounds of food was lost in the fire. The destroyed food had been expected to last until the next major food drive in September. A garage door that separated the storage area from the rest of the main building likely saved the structure from complete destruction, Siracky said. However, extensive smoke damage has rendered hampers that had been completed and were inside the building unusable, as well. “Most of it’s just done,” she said. Siracky credited quick-thinking neighbours, who not only saw someone running from the building but noticed the fire that broke out at the same time. “The firemen and the police were here so fast,” Siracky said. “They saved the food bank.

‘I thought it was empty’ Birdhouse surprise in Brocklehurst By Tim Petruk
STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
Brocklehurst resident John Webber holds up an old birdhouse — an avian dwelling he thought had been sitting empty for the last 14 years — found to be home to a family of chicks by workers removing a rotten tree from his yard. Dave Eagles/KTW
The 15-foot poplar tree in John Webber’s yard was half rotten and had to come down. When he moved into the home on Joyce Avenue in Brocklehurst 14 years ago, the Lake City Casino employee noticed an old wooden treehouse about 35 feet up, attached to the old windbreak planted in the orchard-era. “It was too high for me to get at it,” Webber said. “And I never thought it was occupied — I thought it was empty. “I’ve never seen birds going in or out, so I thought it was abandoned.” But, as BC Pole Service worker Josh Allen was three-and-a-half storeys up in a cherry-picker using a chainsaw to slice the old poplar limb from limb, he heard something. “I’m watching him work, and I see him stop,” Webber said. “He takes his ear and he puts it up to the birdhouse.” Allen heard something. A chirping. The old wooden birdhouse hanging on the old rotten poplar tree was not abandoned after all. And, as the birdhouse — safely removed from the tree by Allen — sat leaning up against the wall of Webber’s next-door neighbour’s house on Thursday afternoon (Aug. 2), the chirping was loud. But, there were no chicks to be seen. They appear to be hidden inside a mess of straw and weeds placed lovingly inside the birdhouse, presumably by their mom. The chicks are fine, and soon they’ll be back up in the trees — just not the same one. “We’re going to put it in one of the trees in the back in order to save the birds,” Webber said. “I would assume the birds should be able to find their chicks.”

Investigators continue probe of Dallas house fires STAFF REPORTER
reporter@kamloopsthisweek.com
An investigation continues into a fire on Friday, Aug. 3, that destroyed two houses in the 6200-block of Hillview Drive in Dallas. Homeowner Kevin Schuurman said he was at work when he received a call at about 3 p.m. from his wife, telling him to come home because the house was on fire. His daughter was home at the time, sitting in a vehicle on the driveway. “My daughter and her boyfriend were sitting in her car listening to tunes and they smelled the whiff of smoke, but then it went away,” Schuurman said. He said the pair realized the house was on fire and went inside, allowing the family dog to escape. They noticed a hot tub ablaze and tried to fight the flames with a water hose. Schuurman said his daughter’s boyfriend then noticed flames coming from the garage. Neighbour Candice Baytaluke said she was on her deck when
she smelled something burning. She said it smelled like plastic burning and worried something in her house was melting. She went out to her front gate to see her neighbour’s house on fire. Baytaluke said she heard her neighbour’s daughter screaming and trying to call her parents as the house went up in flames and went over to console to her. “While I was talking to her, I could see flames coming from out her front door and she kept saying to me the cat was in there and I said, ‘Sweetie, you’ve got to stay here. You cannot go back in the house. The fire department’s coming’,” she said, noting the neighbourhood rallied to help, including a bystander who moved a trailer that had begun to melt. Another neighbour, Jake Surline, said people from around the neighbourhood tried to put out the fire, but the smoke was too intense. “Some guys were here, they tried hosing it but you couldn’t get near it — the flames, the smoke was unreal,”
he said, adding strong winds carried the blaze to another house in short order. Surline said the neighbourhood did what it could to help until fire crews arrived, including setting up sprinklers in an attempt to keep the flames from spreading farther.
Hazmat concern at Mt. Paul fire Fire investigators are also looking into a structure fire in a building at Kemp Concrete on 1161 Chief Louis Dr. on Sunday, Aug. 5. Assistant fire chief Mike Adams said when firefighters arrived just after 8 p.m., the building was engulfed in flames. Crews remained outside at first due to concers about oxy acetylene, or other dangerous gases and

He said the fire was under control in about 20 minutes and was confirmed out just before 9 p.m. The cause has yet to be determined, Adams said. “Whatever was inside that shop was burning,” Adams said. “We don’t know what the combustibles were. Wal-Mart reno boosts city construction figures By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
A multi-million expansion to the Kamloops Wal-Mart helped boost the city’s building-permit totals over this time last year for yet another month. The city issued more than $17 million in building permits in July, compared to just under $14 million in 2011. “The biggest one was the Wal-Mart addition. We’re at $6 million just for that project alone,” said development and engineering-services director Marvin Kwiatkowski. Overall, the city handed out more than $8.5 million in commercial permits, compared to $4.6 million in 2011.
For the year-to-date, Kamloops has more than doubled its commercial permit value: $63 million in permits this year, versus $29 million or the first six months of 2011. “We’re obviously doing substantially higher than we did last year,” said Kwiatkowski. “That’s pretty strong, double than last year.” Residential construction was down slightly from last year, with $5 million in permits issued compared to $7 million in 2011. Kwiatkowski said those numbers will likely see a greater increase in 2013, once the current rush of commercial construction is complete. Overall, the city is well over 2011’s permit total for the first six
months of the year. This time last year, more than $97 million in building permits had gone out. In 2012, it’s more than $118 million. After starting the year expecting to issue around $140-million in permits, the city’s since reworked it’s projections, with $175 million as the new mark to meet. Kwiatkowski said the city is well on track to hitting that, given there are several big projects still in the works or expected before the year is out. That includes $6 million to bring a Target to Sahali Mall and construction of the Telus data centre. “I think it’s going to be a pretty strong finish,” Kwiatkowski said.

No surprise here: July was hot, wet After a damp and chilly June, July saw a return of heat to the Tournament Capital — but not quite the relief from the rain originally predicted. While last month’s average daily high was 30.3 C, above the usual 28.3 C, the month also saw 1.5 times much as rain as a typical Kamloops July, according to data from Environment Canada. However, most of the rain came in the form of flash thunderstorms, rather than a steady drizzle. The city had mea-
surable precipitation on only nine days of the month, bang-on with usual conditions. Those few days were very wet. More than 16 millimetres of rain fell on July 23 — more than half the amount of precipitation Kamloops usually gets in total for July. A thunderstorm on July 26 led to localized flooding in some parts of the city, though other neighbourhoods received little, if any, rainfall. Other benchmark temperatures were also above the city’s aver-

than usual. The month’s warmest day came on the July 13, when the thermometre hit 37.2 C — hot, but not close to the city’s hottest day on record for July. That was set on July 31, 1971, when the mercury hit 40.6 C.

Posturing about the pipeline doesn’t help the situation
T
HE B.C. LIBERAL government is taking its new hardline approach to federal environmental hearings on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal in September. Environment Minister Terry Lake has filed the B.C. government’s notice to cross-examine Enbridge, one of the world’s biggest pipeline operators. Lake outlined the “tough questions” B.C. representatives will ask about spill-response capacity on land and sea, tanker-escort tugboats, pipe-wall thickness and Enbridge’s sluggish response to a pipeline rupture in Michigan. That’s all fine — and to be expected after Premier Christy Clark’s high-profile confrontation with Alberta Premier Alison Redford going into the recent premiers’ meeting in Halifax. Clark’s demands for “world-leading” safety and spill response, as well as meeting the constitutional obligation to consult and accommodate aboriginal groups along the route, are mostly a statement of the obvious. Her call for a “fair share” of proceeds from exported oil to reflect B.C.’s risk has been assaulted from all sides. Pipeline opponents seized on Clark’s suggestion a major oil spill might be tolerable if there was enough money in it for B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix picked up the theme as he conducted his own belated tour of the proposed route to reiterate his opposition. There had been earlier hints from Alberta that B.C. might need further rewards for the risk but, when Clark made the “fair-share” demand public,
TOM FLETCHER Our Man in
VICTORIA Redford was moved to channel Margaret Thatcher, declaring: “The premier of Alberta is not going to blink on royalties.” The lady’s not for blinking, but neither is B.C.’s Iron Snowbird, as Preston Manning has dubbed Clark. All this political theatre doesn’t amount to much. I’ll stand by my January prediction the Enbridge proposal is unlikely to proceed, mainly due to the tangled state of aboriginal claims. Wealthy U.S. foundations that view the B.C. North Coast as their 500-year eco-experiment will be happy to help fund a decade of legal challenges, while continuing the media-spinning and protest support they are doing. Even if some way can be found to levy a B.C. tax on revenues from the pipeline, it’s no solution. For one thing, it would confer an advantage to the Trans-Mountain pipeline that has been shipping Alberta oil to Burnaby and the U.S. for more than 60 years. The competing expansion proposal by Trans-Mountain’s owner, Kinder
Morgan, shows the inconsistency of opposition to pipelines. Does anyone really believe a new pipeline built to the highest standards ever would be too dangerous, while a 60-year-old pipeline is acceptable? Protesters have an easy target in Kinder Morgan. With a tenfold increase to 25 tankers a month proposed to sail under the Lions Gate bridge, a heavy-oil spill from Second Narrows to Stanley Park would be catastrophic to Vancouver’s environment and economy. Tankers have made that trip safely nearly 100 years, but the congested modern shipping lane offers more threat of collision and clearing Burrard Inlet for near-daily tanker transits would disrupt the rest of B.C.’s shipping trade. An Angus Reid poll last week showed as many as half of respondents remain open-minded about the costs and benefits of new oil pipelines across B.C. Unlike B.C. politicians, they seem interested in learning more before making up their minds. Dix and the NDP ran to the front of the anti-pipeline parade early, as they did with the carbon tax and other issues. Clark began the Northern Gateway discussion with a principled position to wait for the result of the federal review — but that’s apparently out the window with an election looming. Coastal authorities in B.C. have long been putting together tsunami and earthquake preparedness plans. The need is growing greater for the three levels of government to have a definite plan in place to deal with potentially environmentally dangerous debris from last year’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan washing up on B.C. coastlines. Items ripped apart by powerful waves, much of them covered with sea life that could threaten native species, have for months been arriving on the western shorelines of Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii. Residents and others concerned about threats to the pristine nature of coastal areas have been doing their best to remove the material. No one knows, given the unpredictable nature of ocean currents, just how much flotsam will reach B.C. shores. But, enough has arrived already to inform provincial and federal authorities of the extent of the problem. The province is in a “fact-gathering stage” on the issue, said Environment Minister Terry Lake, who recently toured Haida Gwaii. His comments that any cleanup plan must be a joint effort between local, provincial and federal governments and First Nations make sense, but indicate the province is not willing to take the lead on tackling this problem. The shockingly low cleanup grant of $50,000 from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for each of the five states affected, shows how low this issue is on that government’s priority list. We hope our federal government, already showing a similar lack of respect for the environment through budget cuts, does not take a similar tack by downplaying this serious issue.

Will Aberdeenians be content with backyard mine? Editor: I don’t live in Aberdeen, so I don’t have strong opinions on the 58-unit strata project on Van Horne Drive that was recently approved by city council following a second public hearing. It won’t affect my health, my walks, my taxes, my friends or my grandchildren. Clearly, it will affect those who
oppose or support the project. Hopefully, it’s a beginning step to raising awareness in Aberdeenians. Perhaps they can make a connection between what is happening in their backyard and what is planned on the other side of the fence. I was treated in Williams Lake, but it was decided I needed to go by air ambulance to Kamloops. I would like to thank all who helped me — nurses in Williams Lake, the ambulance teams, my wife, my daughter and the nurses, doctors and staff at Royal Inland Hospital. She couldn’t remember where she lived or how far she had gone and asked him to call a police officer (Const. Brocklebank). The police officer questioned her and then had her transported to Royal Inland Hospital, where doctors and nurses had her on file and were able to call me. Work gets underway on the 2013 Training House at 1363 Rockcress Dr. in Dufferin on Friday, Aug. 3. Dave Eagles/KTW
2013 Y Dream Home construction underway Work is underway on the 2013 Kamloops YMCA/YWCA Dream Home — a joint venture between the Canadian Home Builders’ AssociationCentral Interior chapter and Thompson Rivers University’s school of trades and technology. The project, now in its 22nd year, is beneficial to the first-year residential construction, electrical and plumbing program students at TRU as a hands-on building experience. Students complete the foundation and rough-in work. The home is finished with Canadian Home Builders’ Association member contractors. For the last 18 years, the finished home has been sold to the Kamloops YMCA/YWCA for its Dream Home fundraiser. Proceeds from the lottery go to specific community endeavours co-ordinated and run by the Y. The annual project is well known not only locally but provincially and nationally, and has won awards for its unique public-private partnership, sustainable elements and community contribution every year.
The 2013 training house is being built in the residential development of Hidden Trails at Mount Dufferin. The house is a two-storey, three/ four-bedroom, 2,100square-foot structure with an unfinished basement. Designed by Blue Green Architecture, the house is being built as a solar-ready Built Green platinumlevel home. The house’s style is modern and positioned to profile new products and systems to the public and newhome purchasers. Matt McCurrach of Homex Developments is the project manager for the build. “This project gives us an opportunity to give back to the community where we make our living,” he said. TRU construction instructor Hank Bangma said: “For us, it is about enhancing the educational experience of our trades students by giving them on-site experience, in addition to classroom work.” CHBA-CI will profile the building steps on Facebook, giving followers an unusual snapshot of the residential building process.

W reporters Andrea Klassen KTW and Michael Potestio hit the road and travelled to Enderby for a night at the Starlight.
I
T’S STILL A COUPLE HOURS TO SUNDOWN and show time, but there’s already a small lineup of cars parked at the gates of the Starlight Drive-In. Tucked next to Highway 97 just south of Enderby, the Starlight is one of only three drive-in theatres still operating in B.C., and the only one making a go of it outside the Lower Mainland. It’s a balmy July night, just a hint of breeze stirring the grass in the parking lot, and co-owner Paul Lindquist is thrumming with energy. “We’re going to rock it tonight,” he says. With the night’s opening fast approaching, Lindquist is on a last-minute handyman run, adjusting lights and dealing with the damage from a storm that ripped through the area the night before. “Just absolutely crazy weather,” he recalls with a laugh. “We had a lineup down the driveway and all of a sudden there was this black cloud.” Rain came down fast and furious, briefly turning the theatre’s driveway into a rushing river. Hail pinged off car tops,
taking a few small chips out of the screen in the process. The customers waited it out. “We had a couple hundred people out here,” Lindquist says. “It shows you the resilience of our clientele, and the durability of this little labour of love. Because that’s what it is. It’s three guys doing something we really like to do.”
LABOUR OF LOVE Though it was built in 1996, the Starlight looked like it had been abandoned for a couple of decades when
Starlight Drive-In coowner Paul Lindquist (pictured on the left) moved from the Lower Mainland to Enderby to help operate the business. Andrea Klassen photos/KTW
Lindquist first drove past it in 2002. Lindquist had been all over B.C.’s Interior that year, touring theatres in Castlegar, Trail and Creston as he looked for a small operation to take over. A former projectionist at the Duncan drive-in during the late 70s, he’d worked in theatres on and off ever since and was itching to get back to the screens. “I’d had enough of the rat race,” he says. “I just wanted to have a little theatre
in the middle of nowhere and play my shows.” But despite his beginnings in the industry, running a drive-in had never entered the picture, until his friend and eventual business partner Randy Noonan suggested he investigate the Starlight. Soon, he’d packed up his Lower Mainland life, and was in Enderby for good. X See STARLIGHT A12

Starlight fans feel ownership: ‘It’s your drive-in’ X From A11
With the help of friends and family he, Noonan and a third owner, Brian Smith, set to work fixing the grounds, whipping the 1960s-era equipment into shape and transforming the site into a working theatre. Twelve days later, the Starlight opened for its first official season. “It was unreal,” Lindquist remembers. “We had no picture the night before. We got our picture working at 11 p.m. on the Thursday night before we opened Friday.” In the 11 seasons that have followed, the trio have built a loyal following. Some come once a summer, making special trips from Kelowna and Kamloops. Others are here nearly once a week, driving back whenever a new double feature goes up. “People adopt it as their own,” says Lindquist. “Our customers, it’s their drive-in theatre. “It isn’t my drivein theatre and it isn’t Randy’s and it isn’t Brian’s. “If you come here to see a show it’s your drive-in.”
ATMOSPHERE Once the cars start rolling in, the atmosphere at the Starlight is like a family camp-out. Just under the screen a group of people fire up a grill, sending the scent of hotdogs wafting out over the grass.
Others set up sleeping bags, lawn chairs and blankets, or start a pre-show game of frisbee. Two teenagers on a date crawl into a sleeping bag in the back of a pickup truck, and use the pre-show wait to check their phones. Atop another truck, Emliee Tambellini is
camped out in a nest of blankets, munching popcorn as she waits for dusk. Her mother, Angelina Tambellini says it’s her daughter’s first drive-in experience, and the size of the screen — at 6,000 square feet, it’s a third bigger than what’s
found in an IMAX theatre — has already wowed her. Tambellini says she remembers going to the Nelson drive-in when she was a child growing up in the Kootenays.

Nostalgia big among drive-in patrons
a place for everyone
X From A12
“I’ve always liked the driveins like this,” she says. “I always thought they were cool. It was a good kid experience.” The nostaligia factor is pretty common here, Lindquist says, and hard to escape given the Starlight’s 1960s decor, which extends all the way to a concession advertisement featuring dancing candy bars and hotdogs that runs just before showtime. “One of the most amazing things to happen out here is when you can hear the kids laugh,” says Smith, between taking admissions at the front gate. “The kids will sit outside and watch the movie. And it just warms your heart, because there are none of these left and you’ve got a whole generation of 30, 40-somethings that want to bring their kids here.” Near the back of the lot, Alexis Semeniuk has taken her camper on a detour from Paul Lake to give her kids a taste of her own childhood. “It’s exciting,” says the Kelowna resident. “It’s fun to show my kids the experiences we used to have growing up. It’s a fun little walk down memory lane.”
THE FUTURE It’s been 10-and-a-half seasons now since Lindquist, Noonan and Smith threw their first movie up on the screen and opened the gates to the first cars of movie-goers. But when the trio of friends (who live in different cities in the off-season) reconvened a few

IF YOU GO The Starlight Drive-In, located on Highway 97 south of Enderby, is open seven days a week until Sept. 7, and on weekends until Sept. 9. For information on show times and pricing, go to starlightdrivein.ca. months before this year’s opening, it was with the thought that season 11 would be their last. Not for lack of cars, customers or personal interest. “I want to do this until I’m 80,” Lindquist, 55, proclaims. But, as indoor theatres made the final push from film to digital projection, the 1960s technology that had steered the Starlight through the last decade had finally become obsolete. Conventional digital projectors wouldn’t be able to project a big enough, clear enough picture for the Starlight’s screen. To get the same picture quality, they would have needed two running simultaneously, and even then digital projectors weren’t capable of throwing a picture all the way across the theatre’s parking and seating area. “So 40 days before we opened we had a little meeting and said, ‘should we give it a shot?’” says Lindquist. Another round of research followed, and this time good news came with it. A new IMAX-style
projector that would meet their needs was now available. The ‘60s-style drive-in was getting a digital heart transplant. “It’s wasn’t a financial decision. That was an emotional decision,” Lindquist says. “We didn’t want this place to go away. It was a huge investment, it’s crazy. You don’t even want to know. It’s insane.” Once it starts, the picture quality is stunning. Crisp and clear, colours pop off the screen. Beyond that, there’s the silhouette of the mountains, the occasional flash of headlights as a stray car passes on the 97. With the car windows rolled down, stray laughter and conversation float in from around the lot, as moviegoers tuck under their blankets, pick up the popcorn and settle in. “When the field is full and people are having a good time, that’s why you do it. That’s why you suffer through the rainy, cold, wet nights,” Smith says. “You have to be here to experience it.”

She grew up in an era where she felt guilty taking time or spending money on herself. Everything was for the family, the husband, the children. She was raised to believe that. When she was young she had to work and study. There was never time for herself. When she got married, she had a good job, so did her husband. Money was not a problem. But there was never money for herself. And then the children came, a son and a daughter. She continued to work but now the money went to buy a skating outfit for her daughter, a bike for her son, but there was never money for herself. Her husband’s rationale was that spending $500 on groceries was okay, but it was certainly not normal to spend $80 on her hair. She accepted that because she thought that was the way it was supposed to be. Her body shape had changed following the birth of her children. And as the years passed, it became more noticeable. Her husband suggested that she stop eating and start walking, which she did. But at the age of 49 starving and walking is not the way to get back in shape. She had a woman friend in her office whose body shape was similar to hers but then it began to change. She was younger looking, more alive. She asked her what she was doing to look so good. She said she was going to Powertone Health Studio. “This woman got the courage to call me and start a program,” says Irene, owner of Powertone. “She didn’t tell anyone not her husband or her friends.” A few months later friends began noticing a difference. She was happier, trimmer, she was looking after herself. She told her husband and he agreed when he saw how different she was. “Life had become boring, a ritual of home and work, but nothing for myself. Suddenly I am loving life and myself, my body has changed, I feel younger. I’m starting to live again and my husband loves the difference.”

ULLING JUST 2,200 R.P.M. AT AN INDICATED 75 m/ ph, the driver-information system on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL says I still have 573 miles left in the tank with 122 JIM ROBINSON miles already covered. The Mercedes in First question is the GL350 DRIVE BlueTEC 4Matic, one of three variants now heading to Canadian showrooms. The GL350 is a turbocharged V6 diesel producing 258 horsepower and a stump-pulling 455 pound-feet of torque. The other two share a 4.6-litre V8 twin turbo V8. The GL450 4Matic has 362 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque while the GL550 4Matic comes in at 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet. Canadian fuel-consumption figures are still being calculated but we were told at the press introduction in Santa Fe, N.M., the diesel has a European combined consumption rating of 7.2L/100 km. It’s pretty certain the GL350 will be by far the most popular model, not because it has the lowest price of the three starting at $73,900 (GL450, $75,900, GL550, $95,900) but because it is a diesel. Mercedes-Benz can take full credit for making diesel hip among the moneyed classes, hence part of the reason the GL is king of the mid-sized luxury CUV/SUV segment in North America. Yes, diesel still smells (but not as bad) and, yes, you can track it into the cabin on your shoes from the puddles by the pump. On the plus side, more than 1,000 kilometres on a single tank is not lost on those who are committed to or who are coming on side with diesel. Acceleration times from zero to 100 km/h respectively are 8.4 seconds, 6.3 seconds and 5.6 seconds. In Europe, there is the 5.5-litre, 557-horsepower GL 63 AMG that goes from rest to 100 km/h in\ just 4.9 seconds. All three Canadian GLs will use the tried and tested 7G-Tronic Plus seven-speed transmission with sequential manual-shift mode. This is the first time I’ve driven a diesel with paddle shifters. It still seems like racecar stuff to me and certainly not something I equate with a diesel. I think of diesels as lazy-revving, slow-accelerating lumps of cast iron — and this has been true for decades. But, with direct injection, engine mapping and virtually lag-free pressure buildup, an engine like that in the GL350 is almost as responsive as gasoline. Also gone is that old hammer-on-anvil-clattering sound. Santa Fe is, I was surprised to learn, the highest capital city in the U.S. At 7,200 feet, auto engines are usually starved for air, but Mercedes turbo technology makes up for this with surprising responsiveness especially a heavy truck the likes of the GL.

GL comes standard with collision-prevention assist X From A19
On long, winding highways with little or no other traffic for miles, I worked both the paddle shifters, along with the new, standard Airmatic fully load-bearing air suspension now with adaptive shock absorbing. Whether it’s just you aboard or with a full load of seven people and luggage/golf bags, the system is able to provide the best possible ride and handling just ambling along or trying to get somewhere in a hurry. Standard is crosswind assist that corrects the steering angle if the GL is buffeted sideways. When this starts to happen, the stability control kicks in and brakes the wheels on the side of the GL facing the gusts, which changes the yaw motion and thus counteracts the crosswind. Also standard for 2013 is collisionprevention assist that quietly monitors the GL at speeds between 30 to 250 km/h. If the system senses you are about to hit the car ahead, there is an audible beep and an illuminated warning on the dash. As soon as the driver hits the brake, adaptivebrake assist, which is part of the system, boosts brake power and ensures what forward braking space is available is used to maximum effect. I had no reason to try this but what I did test was the optional adaptive lane-keeping assist. The idea is when you stray across a dotted or yellow line, the first warning is a rumble in the steering wheel. If you continue off course, the system starts to take control and steers you back on a straight course. It all sounds well and good but, in restricted-lane highway construction zones around Santa Fe, anoth-
er journalist said when a Cadillac strayed into his lane, he moved over to make room. But, then, the system tried to swing him back, which lead to a few tense moments.
I also drove the GL550 which came with every system and technology amassed by Mercedes-Benz in the more than 125 years they have been producing cars.
Just sit inside and it is immediately clear why these sumptuous trucks continue to gain ground over sedans in the luxury market. This was also true of the GL350.
If you like sound, the GL is the place to be with the optional 14-speaker, 1,200watt Bang & Olufsen BeoSound High-End Surround System X See BEST A21

AUTOMARKET Downsizing doesn’t mean downgrading
A23
EXPERIENCE LIFE ACROSS ALL TERRAIN
J.D. Power. During that period of time, vehicle appeal overall has significantly increased and today’s smaller vehicles are, in many cases, more appealing than the larger vehicles being replaced. The downsizing trend also has an impact on owner satisfaction with the fuel economy of their new vehicle. While overall vehicle appeal continues to improve, increasing seven points year over year, the greatest improvement is in fuel economy. Furthermore, 47 per cent of owners say gas mileage was one of the most important factors in choosing their new vehicle, up from 40 per cent in 2011. Chevrolet receives the highest number of segment awards of all brands included in the study for the Avalanche, Sonic and Volt models.
Seven brands each receive two model awards: Audi (for the A6 and A8); Dodge (Challenger and Charger); Ford (Expedition and Flex); Kia (Optima in a tie and Soul); MINI (Countryman and Coupe/Roadster); Nissan (Frontier and Quest); and Porsche (Cayenne and 911). The Audi A8 achieves the highest APEAL Study score of any model in the industry in 2012. Also receiving awards are the BMW 3 Series; Infiniti QX56, Range Rover Evoque; Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class; and Volkswagen Passat in a tie. Porsche is the highest-ranking nameplate for an eighth consecutive year. Dodge, Jaguar and Ram achieve the greatest year-overyear improvements, increasing scores by 21, 20 and 19 points, respectively.
Goodyear has announced a development that could help consumers and the environment by reducing the amount of petroleum-based oil used in tires, while extending tread life. Researchers with the company have found using soybean oil in
tires can potentially increase tread life by 10 per cent and reduce the tiremaker’s use of petroleum-based oil by up to seven-million gallons each year. In addition, testing showed improved
mixing capabilities in the manufacturing process. The company found that rubber compounds made with soybean oil blend more easily with the silica used in building tires.

As owners continue to shift toward smaller vehicles, they are finding that the ones they buy are often just as appealing as the larger vehicles they previously owned. This was a major finding in the most recent J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Automotive performance, execution and layout study. The study finds that 27 per cent of new-vehicle buyers who replaced a vehicle downsized — meaning they purchased a new vehicle in a smaller segment than the vehicle they replaced. In contrast, only 13 per cent of buyers “upsized,” while 60 per cent purchased a new vehicle in the same size segment as their previous vehicle. The vehicles being traded in for new ones in the U.S. are approximately six years old, on average, according to data from

Armstrong unable to reach podium in London By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER
sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
W
E STILL love you, Dylan. That was the sentiment at Commodore Grand Café and Lounge and gathering places across the River City on Friday, Aug. 3, when shot putter Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops fell short of his goal at the Olympic Summer Games in London. The Westsyde secondary graduate’s best throw in the shot-put final — which he barely qualified for — was 20.93 metres on the second of six attempts, good enough for fifth place. Poland’s Tomasz Majewski repeated as Olympic champion, throwing 21.89 metres, edging David Storl of Germany by three centimetres. Reese Hoffa of the U.S. won bronze with a 21.23-metre toss. KTW attended the Commodore viewing party. Each of Armstrong’s throws was preceded with a buildup of tension and excitement at the downtown restaurant, which reached capacity by noon, one
hour after it opened, 30 minutes before the final started. Anti-climactic groans following each throw — except his best of the day, which was met with considerable hooting and hollering — were quickly drowned out with applause, as if to say “we still believe.” The bottom line is Armstrong did not have his best stuff, as has been the case leading up to the Games. A fifth-place finish was not what he had in mind. The hulking shot putter finished one centimetre off the podium in Beijing in 2008 and said only a top-three finish in London would suffice. After the event was over on Friday, Armstrong told reporters he has not made a decision on the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016. He will be 35 when they roll around. Armstrong’s family members had the best seats in the house at the Commodore and — when they weren’t being hounded by media — they gave their full support to the 6-foot-4, 300-plus pound athlete. Messages of encouragement were not

hard to find on social networking sites on the weekend. Gord Bradshaw tweeted Armstrong: “So proud of your performance. Thanks for your efforts.” Thea Katherine Dunn posted on Facebook: “Good job . . . you did Kamloops proud.” A seemingly good-
spirited Armstrong talked about his day after competition ended. “I guess I’m happy with fifth, but it would have been nice to get on the podium,” Armstrong said. “It’s just a strong field, super-strong. It’s how it is. You can be in the best shape of your life, but if you don’t
snap one off your finger correctly, they can go a metre less. Every attempt, you think ‘I’ve got one in me.’ But it’s just how the chips fall.”

Canadian Justin Rodhe, who trains with Armstrong at the National Throws Centre (NTC) in Kamloops,
American Kibwe Johnson, who also trains in the River City, qualified for the men’s hammer-throw final
with a 77.17-metre throw on Friday. He did not have a great performance in the final on Sunday, Aug. 5. Johnson could only muster a 74.95-metre toss, good enough for ninth place. Krisztian Pars of Hungary won the event with an 80.59-metre throw.
Local teams chase provincial titles on the road It was a provincialchampionship sort of weekend for a few local sports teams. The Kamloops Venom were chasing a junior B lacrosse championship in Victoria. Meanwhile, the Kamloops RiverDogs were in pursuit of a midget AAA baseball title in Chilliwack. The Kamloops Sun Devils were after a provincial senior men’s baseball championship
TOURNAMENT CAPITAL SPORTS in Prince George.
Venom earn gold The Kamloops Venom are the best in B.C. Kamloops doubled Delta 6-3 in the junior B provincial lacrosse championship final on Sunday, Aug. 5, at Bear Mountain Arena
in Victoria. The Venom posted a 4-0 record at the tournament, beating Delta, 7-5, Saanich, 8-4, and Victoria’s Westshore, 8-6, en route to the final. With the win, Kamloops qualifies for the junior B national lacrosse championship,
the Founders’ Cup, which gets underway in Six Nations, Ont., on Tuesday, Aug. 14, and runs to Sunday, Aug. 19.
RiverDogs bow out It was a disappointing end to a promising season for the Kamloops RiverDogs at the midget AAA B.C. Minor Baseball Association championship in Chilliwack on the weekend.
Kamloops posted a 1-2 record in roundrobin play and missed the playoffs. The RiverDogs opened with a 10-2 win over Cowichan on Thursday, Aug. 2, but fell 12-0 to Vancouver on Friday, Aug. 3, and 5-4 to Tri-City on Saturday, Aug. 4. Kamloops was the second-ranked team at the tournament after posting a 26-9 mark in the regular season. Victoria topped the
standings with a 29-6 record. Vancouver, the seventh-ranked team at provincials, won the tournament, beating fourth-ranked Richmond 4-3 on Sunday, Aug. 5.
Sun Devils in final The Kamloops Sun Devils competed for a provincial senior men’s baseball championship on Monday, Aug. 6, in Prince George after
KTW’s press deadline Kamloops met either the Langley Blaze or the Nanaimo Coalminers in the gold-medal matchup. The Sun Devils posted a 3-1 record en route to the final, beating Prince George, 10-5, Victoria, 1-0, and Trail, 16-1, with the lone loss coming against Burnaby, 7-1. Sultana Frizell is not a born-and-bred Kamloopsian, but she does consider the Tournament Capital home. “Oh, it’s totally home,” said Frizell, 27, who will compete for Canada in women’s hammer-throw qualifying at the Olympic Summer Games in London on Wednesday, Aug. 8. “When I first arrived here, I didn’t know what it was going to be like, if I’d like it or not, but everyone’s welcomed me with open arms. “Now, I’m a Kamloopsian.” Born in Perth, Ont.,
Frizell arrived in the fall of 2007 to train with National Throws Centre lead coach Anatoliy Bondarchuk, world-renowned for his expertise in the sport. The Ukrainian has earned his keep in Kamloops, with Frizell, American hammer thrower Kibwe Johnson and Canadian shot putters Dylan Armstrong and Justin Rodhe all qualifying for the London Games. Frizell is the current Canadian record holder, having thrown 75.04 metres in March in Tucson, Ariz. She won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, in 2010 with a 68.57-metre toss and silver at the 2011 Pan American
Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, with a 70.11metre heave. The local hammer thrower placed 33rd at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Frizell spent the weeks leading up to the Games in Albufeira, Portugal, getting herself into what she calls the “London zone.” All the prepara-
tion is in the rearview mirror — it’s crunch time for the six-foot, 240-pound powerhouse athlete. If she qualifies for the final, Frizell will compete for hardware on Friday, Aug. 10. “I’m pretty stoked about it,” she said. “It’s great to have Kamloops behind me and all of us.”

Baseball facility needs financial aid
PICKS OF THE WEEK!
By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER
sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
Financial help will be required for the completion of the Indoor Field of Dreams, a baseball facility under construction on McArthur Island. “We’re short on available cash right now,” said Dean Martin, president of the Kamloops Minor Baseball Association (KMBA). “We have commitments long-term, but access to the cash to get the structure up immediately is
the issue.” Martin said the project’s building committee will likely go to the city first for help. “I think that’s going to be our initial approach,” he said. “If that doesn’t pan out, then we’ll have to look at other options.” Martin did not confirm how much cash is needed to complete the building project, but said “we’ve got a long way toward getting the structure put together.” At a press confer-
ence in February, building-committee chairman Sean Wandler said the KMBA had already raised $150,000 of the building cost. The City of Kamloops provided a $100,000 loan at two per cent and leased the land for $1 a year. Funding in the amount of $75,000, to be paid over five years, had been provided by the Kamloops Blazers Sports Legacy Fund. A building fundraising team is led by Norm Daley of Daley and Co., with the help of Bryce Herman, Jack Hollstedt and
Aleece Laird of Fresh Inc. Marketing. The fundraisers have assigned baseball terms to the amount of money a person or group donates to the cause. For example, a contribution of $500 or less is called a “walk.” Kal Tire and Daley and Co. hit “grand slams” by donating up to $3,500, which gets them naming rights to interior features of the facility. Darryl Caunt, president of Mibroc Construction, Rob Lucas, president of Interior Iron, John Demidoff of Demidoff
Equipment Ltd. and architect Trevor Owen of Owen and Hunter make up the building team. In a perfect world, Wandler said at the press conference, the indoor field would be open for use this fall. The facility will be 100 feet long, 50 feet wide and 24 feet tall, with an indoor ceiling of 22 feet. Building a vestibule between the new building and the existing washroom facility is Phase 2. No timeline was set for Phase 2’s completion.
Crown of Curling lands title sponsor,Valley First Valley First, one of the Interior’s oldest and most well-known credit unions, recently announced its title sponsorship for October’s Valley First Crown of Curling in Kamloops. Entering its 39th year, the Crown will feature 48 teams, 24 men’s and 24 women’s. Hosted by the Kamloops Curling Club from Oct. 19 to Oct. 22, the event attracts teams from Europe, Asia and North America. The event is also part of the World Curling Tour, which means prize money earned goes toward the overall points for the trials for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. “Curling is one of Canada’s classic
winter pastimes,” Valley First president Paulette Rennie said. “Valley First is excited about being the lead sponsor for what is not only a tremendous local event, but also an event with growing international appeal. “As the title sponsor, we are proud to play our part in showcasing Kamloops, supporting the local community and attracting visitors and economic benefits to the region.” The event is expected to create positive economic spinoff for Kamloops and the surrounding area. “Any large scale event in our city has great economic benefits,” according to Dan Sulz, executive director with
Venture Kamloops. “Events like the Valley First Crown of Curling are exceptionally valuable to the community, as they generate significant economic activity while showcasing great local businesses, unique products and quality services.” Len Bosch, one of the lead organizers for the Crown, is thrilled with the new partnership with Valley First and excited about being involved inthe bonspiel. “Strong partnerships are the key to staging any event,” Bosch said. “In Valley First, we have are partner who is committed to the success of the Crown as well as the ongoing prosperity of our city.”

JAKE FEHR It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Jake Fehr on July 28, 2012 at 77 years of age. Jake Fehr was born in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan on June 27, 1935. His parents were Elisabeth Fehr and William Fehr of Warman, Saskatchewan. Jake was predeceased by his brothers Neil Fehr and David Fehr. Jake is survived by his loving and devoted wife Marcella Grace Fehr: his son Glen Jacob Fehr (Florriann) and three step-children Rosina Marie Hoffman (George), Tina Alida Smith (Darcy) and Garret Henry Hoogestraat (Korena); his six grandchildren Alysha Katja Fehr, Janna Shaelynn Fehr, Paul Norman Hoffman, Kyle John Hoffman, Shawn Darcy Smith, Candice Lee Smith, Christopher Hoogestraat, Blake Ellis Hoogestraat, and Tanner John Hoogestraat; his great-grandchildren Faith Alida Smith, Shyla Dawn Smith, Kayleigh Rae Smith and Ashlyn Ava Smith, Taylor Jesslyn Hoogestraat; and his sisters Justina (David) Fehr and Betty Plamondon, and brother William Fehr. Jake Fehr came from six generations of Mennonite heritage in Saskatchewan. His first language was German and he learned English in grade school. His first love was always family, especially spending time with his wife. He met Marcella Grace Fehr in 1967, then a widow with three young children. Jake lovingly adopted the three youngsters as his own. He loved and was very proud of all his children, grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Jake worked hard as a journeyman carpenter until he retired at age 65. He enjoyed attending and reuniting with the fellas at the local United Brotherhood of Carpenters Union 1540 Christmas parties right up until two years ago. Over the years Jake spent time fishing with his family, making scroll saw carvings as presents, and continually worked on wood building projects and tinkering. Jake has a great appreciation for gardening and had a meticulously cared for yard. Jake mostly spent his time with his loving wife Marcella and enjoyed taking her on road trips. He was very devoted to her and felt happiness most when by her side. Jake said recently, “I am so proud of all of my children, they have all done very well for themselves”. He felt family was the most important part of living.

whether it is winter, summer, spring or fall, Saul Lake is the place to go if you feel the urge to catch fish after fish. The nature of this sport fishery makes Saul Lake a good place to go with children, especially first-timers who crave their first catch. It will be easy to thrill five-year-olds at Saul Lake because a successful day on the water is virtually a guarantee. Ultralight tackle, such as small rods and reels with lines in the four to six-pound test range as well as small hooks between #12 and #14, are best on this lake. While the regulations do not require it, pinch down the barbs of your hooks. Since you will have a great deal of catching and releasing to do, barbless hooks will make the job easier and make the fish happier. FEW LAKES COULD BE CALLED A SUREFIRE
fish producer, but Saul Lake is one lake where catching a fish is almost a certainty. This small body of water on the Tranquille Plateau is bursting with rainbow trout. Not big ones — “big” trout are up to 30.5
centimetres (12 inches) — but there are lots of them and they are easy to catch. Anglers can employ almost any technique, from flies and spinners to worm and bobber, and expect to catch fish. It doesn’t matter

FACILITIES: Despite a small recreation site maintained by the Kamloops Indian Band, Saul Lake’s facilities are limited. The site offers four campsites, with no camping fees, and a rough put-in for cartopper boats. DIRECTIONS: From downtown Kamloops, cross the Overlander Bridge and follow Fortune Drive to Eighth Street. Head north to Batchelor Drive. Follow Batchelor Drive through the residential development to a gravel two-wheel-drive logging road and the entrance to Lac Du Bois Provincial Park. Follow Lac Du Bois Road until it leaves the park and continues northwest into the Tranquille Plateau. Saul Lake is on the righthand side of the gravel road, about 15 km past Pass Lake, which is about 5 km past the boundary of Lac Du Bois Provincial Park. If you have a GPS, the coordinates for Saul Lake are 50°54’50.70”N, 120°38’21.66”W.
