Hampton Affiliates present report in Vancouver Special committee on timber supply wraps up LAKES
DISTRICT NEWS STAFF
The special committee on timber supply meetings that were held across the province wrapped up earlier this month, but not before Hampton Affiliates made a second submission to the committee during a July 11, 2012, meeting in Vancouver. Both Steve Zika, Hampton Affiliates chief executive officer and Richard Vossen, Babine Forest Products woods manager addressed the committee and presented preliminary independent report findings on timber supply to the committee. Zika also presented to the committee signatures of 1,700 people in the local community that signed a petition supporting the rebuilding of the sawmill. As reported in the Lakes District News edition of June 27, 2012, Vossen said the company was in the process of completing an independent report into the timber supply issues that will determine a rebuild of the mill, which was completely destroyed by a Jan. 20, 2012 explosion and fire. “We’ve hired an independent consultant that will do our own timber supply analysis for the lakes timber supply area. We question some of the numbers of the chief forester and we’d like to verify them ... we’d like to see where the differences are,” Vossen said.
During the July 11, 2012, Vancouver meeting Zika said, “If we don’t begin construction of a new sawmill soon, I fear for the effects on the community and our business. Burns Lake isn’t Vancouver or Prince George; it’s a small community. Babine is by far the economic engine there.” He said the mid-term timber supply could be increased from the base of 500,000 to a million cubic metres. “We are confident of that.” Zika said the committee will not be able to solve all the pine beetle issues with one process and one report. “Legislation will be required, similar to what has been done for other communities such as Mackenzie. The legislation should authorize the area licence conversion, along with new First Nations licences. Your report should also encourage the Minister of Forests to find other replacement licence volume for our big competitors, near their many other sawmills in the province and should emphasize a district-by-district approach. What is applicable in one area does not work for other areas. Additional time for analyzing timber supply in each district should be taken, with input from professional local foresters, First Nations and community leaders. The management regime in each district will be different, based on the health of the forest and other societal values More on page 2...

A special committee on timber supply meetings that were held across the province to decide if Hampton Affiliates be supplied with enough fibre to rebuild Babine Forest Products after the tragic explosion that occurred Jan. 20, 2012. ...From page 1 as well,” he said. I’ve been there in similar situations on many occasions where we sat across from families who lost their jobs as a result of mill closures, so my heart is with you. But I think the situation here is twofold. When we were traveling in that region I did not find very many operators with 100 percent AAC attached to their mills or to feed their capacity. It seems to me that the 450,000 that you have pretty well comes to about 50 percent of your need. Committee member Harry Bains, MLA for Surrey-Newton said, “If other operators can operate with 40 percent, 20 percent or 30 percent of timber supply available to them, why can’t
you? If you stop timber leaving the Lakes timber supply area, what impact will it have on the other communities and other sawmills, which they actually rely on today?” Zika said, “The only other major license holder is West Fraser. Canfor and L & M Lumber have very small licenses, so it’s really West Fraser. There’s a possibility that maybe the Fraser Lake sawmill would lose a shift. Yes, we have 450,000 licensed today, but if truly the volume goes down in the future to 500,000 and you go in more of a traditional way that they’ve done in the past, they’re going to cut everybody, and that 450 is going to drop to 200 or less. You have to remember that the Lakes District is very small.
Prince George is a massive timber supply area. They’ve got opportunities to go North to Fort St. James. They can go Northwest. They’re all still in the Prince George region. In the Lakes District we don’t have that opportunity. The road systems aren’t set up. We can’t compete in that same area and in theory, our license isn’t in that area. So they’re going to have a natural advantage over us by doing that. We’re just asking you to give us a shot. We have to make a new investment. Insurance will cover some of it, but you’re asking us as a private, family company to make another significant investment beyond insurance. You have to have some kind of security to know that there isn’t just this cliff at the end, that all
of a sudden you’re going to be left with very, very little,” Zika added. Vossen agreed and said the Lakes timber supply area is probably the smallest timber supply area in the interior. “It is also the timber supply area that has probably has the highest liquidation of pine taken out of it to support the communities to the East and West,” he added. [See more on page 7 for Richard Vossen’s comments] Zika said, “For the last couple of years we’ve talked about amalgamating timber supply areas to make them a big timber supply area. Nobody wanted to do that because they already have theirs .... Canfor and West Fraser. They have all the money. They have all the licences. Of course they don’t want to share. They came into the Lakes District, took the timber out. From a business standpoint, why would they want to change anything?” Zika added, “The biggest by far is West Fraser. It has 340,000 metres today in the Lakes District, and they have about 10 or 15 sawmills in the province. I’m not saying take away the volume, just transferring it to other areas. There’s no reason they can’t get some additional tenure up in the Fort St. James area. Zika said if the rebuild happens the new mill will be state of the art with three or four special dust systems to capture dust. “Basically, almost all the mills up North now are doing the best they can. We’re making a really good effort, and the industry is, to mitigate dust. There will be a little bit of labour reduc-

tion within the sawmill itself, but you’re still going to need people for maintenance and cleanup and all those kind of things ... It’ll be about two-thirds the size ... that’s what we’re hoping the timber will support.” The committee will issue a report on Aug. 15, 2012, to the Legislative Assembly recommending ways in which the mid-term timber supply in the central interior can be increased.

Community tourism vision Tourism B.C. commits $30,000 to ongoing efforts
SHERYL WORTHING LAKES
DISTRICT NEWS STAFF
According to the recently developed 'community tourism plan' for the local area, the vision for the Lakes District is to be part of a vibrant community that includes a desirable, healthy and affordable lifestyle. The area is to be a family orientated destination and a place where people want to come back. Sheryl Worthing, Village of Burns Lake chief administrative officer said to Lakes District News that the tourism plan is a comprehensive document that was developed by a large working group committee made up of Burns Lake and Lakes Dis-
trict representatives, as well as a team from Tourism B.C. Worthing said the overall goal of the plan is to increase tourism in the Lakes District in order to diversify the local economy in a sustainable manner. The longer term vision for the plan is expected to be achieved over a period of five to 10 years. The process started with a community tourism vision that was first developed in 2008 and expanded in 2012. "The outcome was to identify short, medium and long term tourism strategies," Worthing said. The report was finalized last month and resulted in 32 key recommendations. According to the plan, the short term goal is to increase participant registration at the Big Pig Mountain Biking Festival by 30 per cent through leveraged investments in the mountain biking trails and festivals. Medium term goals include increasing the number of tourists who stop in Burns Lake, increasing participants during festival weekends and long term goals include growing overall tourism and establishing interpretive centre visitor attendance and revenue targets.
This will be achieved by destination development initiatives that will focus on unique areas that have tourism potential such as the Big Pig Mountain Biking Festival, a proposed clan carving walking tour through the downtown core that will be developed this summer and further investments in trails, campsite maintenance and the development of one or two more festivals, which the plan suggests could be a winter festival to coincide with the Coldsmoke Snowmobile drags, a Southside bluegrass festival, or a performing arts festival. In the plan, it is noted that a longer term vision for the development of an Aboriginal cultural centre will offer significant potential to draw in travelers off Hwy. 16. Worthing said the goal for local tourism initiatives is to market Burns Lake to tourists traveling along Hwy. 16. The tourism plan characterizes these tourists as international travelers from the U.S. Germany, Netherlands and the U.K., who are 55 plus years of age, well educated, often retired and traveling without children. According to the plan, the older demographic is
interested in unique Aboriginal culture and heritage experiences, festivals and events that coincide with their journey and easily accessed outdoor adventure opportunities, such as walking tours, short interpretive hikes, rock hounding tours and boat rentals. Some results to date include securing funding from the Omineca Beetle Action Coalition and Northern Development Initiative Trust for the August 2012, Big Pig Mountain Bike Festival as well a contracting the Burns Lake and District Chamber of Commerce to carry out the tourism aspect of the Big Pig Mountain Bike Festival based on recommendations from the tourism committee. Funds have also been secured for the Burns Lake Band initiated four clan carvings which Worthing said will be placed in the downtown core this fall. She also said a walking tour of the downtown core including informational signage will be developed for next tourism season. "Tourism B.C. has committed $30,000 towards ongoing tourism initiatives," she said adding that the tourism committee has not met since the completion of the plan.

Smoke organic, save a species Findings by researchers in California may lead conservation biologists to form alliances with organizations promoting the legalization of marijuana. A research team, led by Mourad Gabriel, with the Integral Ecology Research Center and the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the UC (Davis) found anti-coagulant rodenticides in the livers of several carcasses of the endangered fisher. Fishers are the largest members of the mustelid family which includes martens, mink and weasels. Anti-coagulant rodenticides are essentially blood thinners that, as their name implies, prevent blood clotting. The authors noted the presence of open buckets of anti-coagulant rodenticides associated with illegal marijuana cultivations as a potential link with the deaths of the fishers. Given B.C.’s reputation for producing good quality pot, the results of the California study add another reason to the pile of reasons to legalize marijuana. B.C. has more than a dozen blue and red-listed avian and mammal species that can be impacted by anti-coagulant rodenticides. Smoking legal, organic pot could help save these threatened and endangered species, in more ways than one.
LAKES DISTRICT
NEWS
First, certified organic marijuana cultivators will not be allowed to use rodenticides or any other form of chemical pest control. Win-win for endangered hawks, owls and mammalian carnivores such as weasils, fishers and their prey. Win-win for pot smokers as they would be assured the rodenticide didn’t make its way into the product they were buying. Even better, the revenue generated from the sale of legal marijuana could be poured into various programs aimed at helping the recovery of endangered species. Various estimates peg the value of marijuana sales in the tens of billions of dollars. Let’s just say $10 billion. At a 15 per cent tax rate, legal pot would generate $1.5 billion in tax revenue. Any biologist would be happy to see funding on just the interest generated by $1.5 billion. Given the potential funding windfall, it’s only a matter of time conservation biologists and government biologists call for the legalization of marijuana. Save a species, smoke organic.

The B.C. Liberal government is taking its new hard-line approach to federal environmental hearings on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal in September. Environment Minister Terry Lake has filed the B.C. government’s notice to crossexamine Enbridge, one of the world’s biggest pipeline operators. Lake outlined the “tough questions” B.C. representatives will ask about spill response capacity on land and sea, tanker escort tugboats, pipe wall thickness, and Enbridge’s sluggish response to a pipeline rupture in Michigan. That’s all fine, and to be expected after Premier Christy Clark’s high-profile confrontation with Alberta Premier Alison Redford going into the recent premiers’ meeting in Halifax. Clark’s demands for “world-leading” safety and spill response, as well as meeting the constitutional obligation to consult and accommodate aboriginal groups along the route, are mostly a statement of the obvious. Her call for a “fair share” of proceeds from exported oil to reflect B.C.’s risk has been assaulted from all sides. Pipeline opponents seized on Clark’s suggestion that a major oil spill might be tolerable if there was enough money in it for B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix picked up the theme as he conducted his own belated tour of the proposed route to reiterate his opposition. There had been earlier hints from Alberta that B.C. might need further rewards for the risk. But when Clark made the “fair share” demand public, Redford was moved to channel Margaret Thatcher, declaring: “The Premier of Alberta is not going to blink on royalties.” The lady’s not for blinking, but neither is B.C.’s Iron Snowbird, as Preston Manning dubbed Clark this spring. All this political theatre doesn’t amount to much. I’ll stand by my January prediction that the Enbridge proposal is unlikely to proceed, mainly due to the tangled state of aboriginal claims. Wealthy U.S. foundations that view the B.C. North Coast as their 500-year ecoexperiment will be happy to help fund a decade of legal challenges, while continuing the media-spinning and protest support they are doing now. Even if some way can be found to levy a B.C. tax on revenues from the Northern Gateway pipeline, it’s no solution. For one thing, it would confer an advantage to the Trans-Mountain pipeline that has been shipping Alberta oil to Burnaby and the U.S. for more than 60 years. The competing expansion proposal by Trans-Mountain’s current owner, Kinder Morgan, shows the inconsistency of opposition to pipelines. Does anyone really believe that a new pipeline built to the highest standards ever would be too dangerous, while a 60-year-old pipeline is acceptable? Protesters have an easy target in Kinder Morgan. With a tenfold increase to 25 tankers a month proposed to sail under the Lions Gate bridge, a heavy oil spill from Second Narrows to Stanley Park would be catastrophic to Vancouver’s environment and economy. Tankers have made that trip safely nearly 100 years, but the congested modern shipping lane offers more threat of collision, and clearing Burrard Inlet for near-daily tanker transits would disrupt the rest of B.C.’s shipping trade. An Angus Reid poll last week showed as many as half of respondents remain open-minded about the costs and benefits of new oil pipelines across B.C. Unlike B.C. politicians, they seem interested in learning more before making up their minds. Dix and the NDP ran to the front of the anti-pipeline parade early, as they did with the carbon tax and other issues. Clark began the Northern Gateway discussion with a principled position to wait for the result of the federal review, but that’s apparently out the window with an election looming. Contract for new hospital site prep announced CONTRIBUTED Northern Health announced that the contract for the site preparation work for the Lakes District Hospital and health centre replacement project has been awarded to Yellowridge Construction Ltd from Port Moody, B.C. Yellowridge Construction will begin the site preparation work on Aug. 7, 2012 in Burns Lake and finish in the fall of 2012. “People will now be able to see the physical work being done onsite in preparation for the new hospital,” said Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad on behalf of Health Minister Michael de Jong. “There’s been a tremendous amount of time and effort put into planning the new facility, and it’s great to see progress will now be made on the ground.” The site preparation work contract is approximately $1.3 million and includes the contract to Nickel Brothers for the relocation of the existing nurses’ residence. As the site preparation is not included in the
design-build procurement package, it ran as a separate tender competition. Yellowridge Construction was established in Port Moody, B.C. in 1961 and is a successful builder that has previously worked on other projects in Northern B.C. “The regional hospital district is pleased to see the project moving into this new phase, bringing us closer to the planned completion in 2015,” said Ralph Roy, chair of the Stuart Nechako Regional Hospital District. Site preparation will include removal of existing building services, installing new water and sanitary sewer services for the new facility, relocation and removal of portions of the perimeter fencing, and abatement and movement of the existing nurses’ residence, including disposal of the building’s concrete foundations. As the site preparation is in progress, the procurement process for the design-build contract for the Lakes District Hospital and
Health Centre Replacement continues. The request for qualifications closed on July 19, 2012 and the shortlist is expected to
be announced in late summer 2012. The preferred proponent for the design-build contract is expected to be announced in spring

Editor: Re: Aug. 1 edition of the Lakes District News regarding the Lakes Artisan Cooperative and “no where else in Burns Lake to display local art.....” as stated by Paula Laurie. I wonder where she comes up with this statement when there are at least four locations as well as a newly established art collective called ARTcore54 with an online artisan directory. Process 4 circle arts gallery, Burns Lake Native Development Corporation displays local First Nations art and crafts, the chamber of commerce and of course the artisan centre. This is not including the seven concerts a year Lakes District Arts Council where local artists have the opportunity to display their work exhibition style (with portions of the sales that night going back into our community), followed by a month in Process 4
and “Art around Town” gives local artisans the opportunity to display work in different businesses throughout town. So “there is no where to display local art?” Visiting Process 4 on a regular basis I can tell you there are at least 36 artists including local First Nation artists displayed in his shop. I can also tell you in the past there has been up to 12 artists displayed at in the heritage meeting room of the chamber. How many artist are apart of the artisan centre...10 going down to seven? The Artisan centre has recently asked to lower their rent by $100 is this due to lack of membership fees and artists not being able to volunteer their allocated time for the month? If that’s the case then Process 4 or other businesses should have some incentives, maybe snow removal, taxes lowered... cause clearly when you break the $400 down no business
Editor: Maybe many of your readers may not be aware that Burns Lake actually has two places that display the works of local artists. In addition to the Artisan Centre, Process 4 Gallery also provides a venue for artists as well as local authors.
Check out the gallery. I’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised at the many treasures it contains.
Sincerely, Rachel Minger
in Burns Lake can survive. Everyone knows the term starving artist and Burns Lakes's local artists are no different. As an artist and having worked with artists throughout this region I have found the response to be pretty repetitive “I just want to paint, I just want to do what I love” then pay the commissions (which are low compared to the lower mainland) and have someone be your public relations, advertise, sell and display your work so you can do what you love. Best bluegrass festival at Grassy Plains Community Hall
Sorry I missed last week but was kinda busy and missed out. Bluegrass The Grassy Plains country and bluegrass festival is behind us but those wonderful memories of it all will be with us for a long time. I know it always leaves me with an empty place in my heart especially leaving so many great friends behind. There is always something special about blue grass folk who enjoy country music and singing. This music goes back for so many years. The sound system was as usual professional you could not find any better no matter where you went. A
good sound system is so very important as it makes the whole show what it is, hats off to you sir, you could never do better and we thank you for it. There have been so many improvements to the hall especially the addition of a new building on the hall. This makes it so convenient for the performers to tune up and change clothes etc., also a much easier entrance to the stage. It’s all laid out so well, we all were very impressed with it all. The parking is another thing I must remark on, it’s laid out with so much room for all types of holiday equipment. It’s so tidy and clean and so much room for the big trailers and there were lots of them parked there. Also good close parking for the handicapped which is a plus. Then there are the folks who gave their time and energy into making it all happen. And what a good job
they did. This is no easy task, but it went over so well. This has no doubt been planned for weeks in advance. What was so special was the wonderful selection of music and singing, for want of a better word professional. What a variety it all was. My niece Renay and her singers and musicians the ‘June Bugs’ sang our song ‘The Cowboy’ this song is very special for the both of us. It comes from our hearts, the haunting melody always makes me want to cry. With all the good reports I’m sure next year the festival will be as good or even better if this is at all possible. Nerve stone As I was going through some old family stuff a few days ago I came across a polished stone the size of a large chicken egg. It’s called a nerve stone and the note on it says it came from China. It seems it was
used to calm a persons nerves. They would hold it in their hand and keep turning it. It’s a beautiful polished stone and very heavy. I am wondering if anyone has heard of a nerve stone before? I am very interested to find any history about them or is it just a fairy tale. There is no doubt there must be a person who knows. Nice visitors It always makes our summer a little brighter to have the David Scott family from the lower mainland spending their holidays in their summer home here at the landing. The Scott family have spent their summer here for many many years. As a guess I would say close to 40. Hay making Most all the ranchers are in the middle of haying and some are finished. Talking to one rancher and he says the hay crop is not as good as they had expected. Most
all have some last years hay left over which will help see them through. Big boats & campers Still lots of big campers and boats going through. Some of the trailers are almost like a moving home away from home. Talking to an American chap one day and he was pulling a huge one. They invited me in for a visit. It was beautiful they even had a bar. As we were visiting I said a home away from home and he told me it was. They just move with the seasons. He said they sold our home because of the vandalism and bought this unit and it’s the best thing they ever did. They were from California. This is not for me as I like to put down roots and stay put, it’s maybe nice to move around I guess if it’s what you like. Lightening Of late we are getting our share of lightening storms. This is really
very unusual for us. On the prairie we used to have these storms very often. There were three kinds of lightening; sheet, chain and fork and the fork was the dangerous one. It would hit barns, elevators, homes and kill stock. It was very scary to have a storm like that. This is little story that I remember as I was growing up on the prairie now so long ago. We had a new neighbour move in and farm close by. Their name was Upton’s and they were really nice folks. Not farmers but were giving it a try. There was a warning that was given and it was do not stand by an open door when there is a fork lightening storm. It seemed Ted Upton had not heard that warning. There was a bad lightening storm and Ted was standing inside their screen door. There was a bolt of lightening hit the
open door and Ted was thrown right across the room and hit the back wall. He was hurt but not serious. But the queer thing about it all was that whenever there was a lightening storm he would get so sick and sometimes pass out. This went on for as long as I can remember. We left for B.C. soon after. All the tall buildings had what was called lightening rods on the roofs. We had three on our barn. They were to protect the high buildings from lightening strikes. Little poem No person has ever added up the value of a smile, we know how much a dollars worth and how much is a mile. We know the distance to the sun and the size and weight of earth, but no one call tell us how much a smile is worth .... so keep smiling. Take care, slow down and enjoy and always remember God loves you and so do I.

Hampton Affiliates completes independent analysis
RICHARD VOSSEN Richard Vossen, Babine Forest Products woods manager presented preliminary independent report findings on timber supply. Vossen said, "Since the Burns Lake meeting we've completed our own analysis of the lakes timber supply area to determine if we could see improvements to the mid term timber supply forecast by modeling a number of mitigation scenarios to help improve the base case predictions. It's our primarily findings that we can maintain an annual allowable cut in the lakes timber supply area at a million cubic metres on a sustainable basis, if we do some changes to how
we project timber supply and some changes on the land base." He said Hampton Affiliates asked Tesera Systems, a timber inventory consultant who's well known in the industry, to lower the current annual allowable cut from two million cubic metres to one million cubic metres to conserve as much green timber as possible for the mid-term. "Recent harvest data indicates that 27 to 40 per cent of the stands harvested have green fibre and have been harvested annually while the dead pine is being liquidated. In the Lakes timber supply area, as the volume of dead pine drops, the percentage of green non-pine timber harvested will increase. Lowering the short term annual allowable cut to one million cubic metres can conserve 300,000 cubic metres of green fibre annually in the Lakes timber supply area for mid term timber supply." Hampton Affiliates also modeled the harvest prioritization of pure leading-pine stands, or stands that have the
highest percentage of pine, to utilize as much of the dead pine remaining and conserve as much of the green fibre that is on the land base. "We also increased current utilization standards and changed the minimum harvest volume from 140 cubic metres per hectare to 100 cubic metres per hectare. This increased the timberharvesting land base, or the number of hectares within the timber supply area available for harvest." Vossen said that improving the utilization standards will increase the use of dead pine in the short term and facilitate better use in the midterm. "This did show us the biggest results for increased mid-term timber supply. While this will increase logging costs, improved lumber markets in the future will, hopefully, cover these added costs.” He said they also modeled some modest changes to land use constraints. "We didn't remove anything; we still want to maintain high environmental
standards. We just did some relaxation. On visual quality objectives we relaxed the visual quality objective by one management class. This maintains the presence of visual quality objectives in the Lakes timber supply area, ensuring blocks still employ good visual design at a reasonable size and scale. A modest change will allow for better use of the dead pine in beetle devastated landscapes while still protecting scenic values, which are so important to us." They also looked at
modifying the way oldgrowth management areas are managed. "Like many other timber supply areas in the province, we strongly believe that old growth management areas should be managed non spatially rather than spatially. Rather than having a static footprint on the land base, our analysis considered the management of old growth values through non spatial targets. We made no changes to restrictions in place to protect key environmental values related to water, important wildlife

habitat or soils. Essentially, we only proposed mitigation strategies that would not jeopardize our high standard of environmental stewardship and provide the
greatest return for timber supply mitigation." They used updated growth and yield data tables to estimate and project growth on the land base.

Canoe journey a valuable experience CONTRIBUTED The Wet'suwet'en First Nation along RCMP organized a 'pulling together' canoe journey from one end of Tsil Kaz Kwah [Burns Lake] to Kakuz' Whuten [Palling]. Carla Lewis from Wet'suwet'en First Nation joined in on the journey, also representing Carrier Sekani Family Services for the Walk Tall Youth Prevention Program. "We learned some of our songs and Wet'suwet'en words and phrases over the two days we spent together on the water and we were able to look at the waters from a different perspective, to slow down and listen to the eagles and get to know the mountains, islands, and creeks that sustain us,” said Lewis. "The following day we went slowly though the narrows where the pipeline is proposing to cross and couldn't imagine how this beautiful and fragile ecosystem could handle being dug up for pipelines, or worse, filled with tar sands oil from a pipeline rupture. It would be just as devastating here as it would be out on the land somewhere or out on our rivers. It would be the end of Burns Lake and Decker Lake, which we proved over this journey, can be
our highway as it was for our ancestors since time immemorial," she said. Lewis said it was extremely hard canoeing for six hours a day. "We persevered and made it to Palling with our community and supporters welcoming us and singing us on shore. After following our protocols, we celebrated with a feast, a recognition and reconciliation ceremony, and traditional dancing lead by the Lake Babine Youth Dancers. The nine youth that participated in the journey were extremely proud of themselves for enduring through such a challenging task." Next year they plan to do the same trip with four warrior canoes and more if others would like to join in. The group included Wet'suwet'en Chief Karen Ogen, Danielle Ogen, Carla Lewis, Stewart Larson, Marcus Nooski, Sampson Wickham, Jayden Larson, Alyssa Larson, Deagan West, William Chelsea, Kirsten Chelsea, Myrna Tom, Charles Tremblay, Kim Sebastian, Marcel William, Kevin Tom and Skipper Cst. Featuring the spirit of the local people Allie Dickson pursuing her love of history at Cambridge Local student enrolled in an international summer school program in Cambridge, England LD NEWS STAFF Local resident Allie Dickson is enjoying life in the United Kingdom. She is currently attending the International Summer School term one program offered by the University of Cambridge’s Continuing Education program. The University of Cambridge is one of the world’s oldest universities. It comprises of 31 colleges and over 150 departments, faculties, schools and other institutions. The oldest colleges at Cambride are Peterhouse, founded in 1284, Claire College, founded in 1326, Corpus Christi College, founded in 1352, Christ’s College founded in 1505 and Trinity College founded in 1546 which has notable graduates such as Prince Charles and Sir Isaac Newton. King Henry VIII was the founder of Trinity College. Dickson is staying at Newnham College, founded in 1871. She said to Lakes District News, “During the day I attend three special interest subject classes, as well as a plenary series on the subject of intelligence.” Her first class is the rise of civilization presented by cultural
anthropologist and archaeologist Dr. Nicholas James. “Dr. James also teaches my second class of the day which is archaeology and the discovery of the world,” Dickson added. Her third class is with Piers Bursill-Hill who is a lecturer for the department of pure mathematics and mathematical statistics at the University of Cambridge. “Surprisingly, he’s teaching the history of medicine from the ancients to the 19 century, which is proving to be a fascinating course,” she said. In addition Dickson said she has a one hour evening lecture on a variety of subjects by a variety of guest lecturers. “So far we’ve had lecturers such as a former MI5 agent, a lecture on the British Monarchy, by famed author David Starkey and one on a forgetting pill that will help people with post traumatic stress disorder, addiction and more. “I decided to attend the summer school program here at Cambridge for several reasons, but the most prominent among them is my love of history. For this type of study there is no better place than Cambridge, England to

son, Cambridge University is over 800 years old. “It’s easy to see why the history of the place might be so fascinating. I’ve always wanted to study abroad and coming out of high school I also knew that I wanted to pursue my love of history further, which is made difficult by the fact that I’m currently a biomedical major at University of Northern B.C. This program has given me the chance to give something new a try while also getting the experience of a lifetime and I’m enjoying every minute of it,” Dickson added. In her blog post about her experience Dickson said, “Classes have been awesome, although I have to say the extra lectures have really been the highlight for me. We had a lecture on the current political situation in Syria and how the events have unfolded in the past year, as well as how prior events in their country’s history has shaped the political landscape. The guest lecturer was John Jackson, who also lectured for us a few days ago on military intelligence giving us an insight into the gathering, passing and use of intelligence in modern times as well as some past historical examples.”
Dickson said her favourite guest lecturer up until this point has been Dr. Francis Wells who is a consultant Cardio-thoraic surgeon at Papworth Hospital in the UK. “He is famous for being the first person in history to perform open heart surgery live in 2007. His lecture was about open heart surgery, which had us all more than a little worried as to what we might see and hear during his hour long lecture. However, I believe everyone was very pleasantly surprised that he spent the hour speaking instead about Leonardo da Vinci. It was a fascinating talk that ranged over Leonardo’s early life and education to his final anatomical drawings that are true pieces of artwork both from a scientific and artistic point of view. I sincerely enjoyed hearing what Dr. Wells had to say and learned a lot about an incredibly influential member of world history.” Dickson is in good company as previous graduates of the university have included Charles Darwin, David Attenborough, artist Quentin Blake, actors John Cleese and Hugh Laurie, as well as 15 British Prime Ministers, nine monarchs and a large number of other royals.

Ancient grave site destroyed Skin Tyee elder discovered smashed fences LAKES DISTRICT NEWS STAFF
Terry Fox Run will take place on Sunday, September 16 at the Francois Lake Hall. Registration is 12 noon. Run starts at 1pm, anyone wanting to donated to our wonderful Fall Harvest Auction or for more information call: 250-695-6496 or 250-692-7439.
Local resident and Skin Tyee Nation elder Gordon Skin said he is saddened by the thoughtless destruction of an ancient Skin Tyee Nation burial site recently. Skin said he was alerted to the situation at the remote gravesite on the Southside by a good friend who, while horseback riding made the discovery. "My wife and I went to check and sure enough, the site had been destroyed," he said. Skin said he has great uncles buried at the site as well as his aunty's baby brothers. "There is plenty of graves there, dating back to the 1800 to 1900s" According to Skin the graveyard had been fixed up and fenced in 1999 by Skin Tyee Nation and on his most recent visit he discovered that the fences had been smashed down, along
with countless grave markers. "It looks as though someone has driven through the fence with a four wheel drive and smashed everything down ... I was very hurt to see this has happened. These people my not have any heart or guilt for what they have done," he added. Skin said he has brought the matter to the attention of the band,
but wanted to bring the matter forward so that people are aware of what has happened. "Cows are starting to get in and are causing more damage to the site ... we need to put up metal fences this time ... but we shouldn't have to do that to keep the area safe," he added. Skin said the matter has not yet been reported to the Burns Lake RCMP.

Yahoo, Gmail, & Hotmail Accounts Compromised Hundreds of thousands of webmail accounts from popular services such as Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, and AOL were compromised by hackers earlier this month. Though the webmail providers have mostly plugged the security holes by now, most of the damage has already been done, as unsuspecting email recipients opened poisoned links and downloaded infected attachments from emails that seemed to come from trusted friends. If you have an email account with the above mentioned webmail providers, it is vitally important that you change your password immediately to keep your friends safe from messages that might come from your account. And do not trust any email attachment or link you receive in your email, even if it’s from someone you trust and especially if it’s a generic sounding message like “Hi, how are you. Check out this neat thing I found!”.
th
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, maintain a positive attitude this week and you’ll benefit greatly from having done so. Once you get it right, everything will click. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, for one reason or another, some issues will go unresolved this week. They can wait, so don’t worry. ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Some change is in order, Aries. You have realized it for some time now, but this week it must come to fruition. Think about the way you want to approach this. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, you are on an emotional roller coaster and don’t know how you will feel from one second to the next. Figure out your goal for each day and then go along for the ride. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you feel like staying in a dream world surrounded by a fence of your own making. But the reality of work and family life has to set in at some point. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 There is something in the stars this week pushing you to make a change, Cancer. The change may be as simple as wearing your hair a new way or as significant as changing careers.
