“Jail and Bail” raises funds for Cops for Cancer Local fundraiser putting Vanderhoof locals behind bars Christina Millington Omineca Express Sharon Unger, Vanderhoof paramedic raises funds for Cops for Cancer on August 2, she will be battling the highways of rural BC on her bicycle in honour of her father, Arnold Unger. Unger’s father passed away eight years ago from prostate cancer. With a personal goal of $10,000, Unger was successful in raising $2,864.88 thanks to the generous community of Vanderhoof. The Jail and Bail was facilitated by Unger and Sgt. Keays of the Vanderhoof RCMP. Unger thought it would be a fun way to get the community involved with raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society and cancer research.
Const. Derek Stewart of the Vanderhoof RCMP was the officer on duty required to arrest nominated residents and bring them to the Coop parking lot where they were put behind bars until family or friends arrived with donations. Minimum bail was $300. Clayton Gull, April Hughes, Kelly Beal, John Callaghan and Deidra Lakness of Vanderhoof were behind bars throughout the morning waiting patiently to post bail. Donations to Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast, Tour de North, Tour de Rock and Tour de Valley are invested in life-saving childhood cancer research for children with cancer and their family. Unger takes to the open road as a medic rider on September, 14. For more information visit www. cancer.ca

The Nechako River may lose local sturgeon to extinction Christina Millington Omineca Express A grim future lies ahead for the local sturgeon population if current initiatives continue to be at a stand still. The proposed $3.2 million white sturgeon hatchery project is yet to see the light of day as federal priorities seem to be elsewhere. “We’re so close,” says Brian Frenkel, Avison Management Services director and chairman of the community working group on the hatchery project. Studies indicate that in the last 50 years the Nechako white sturgeon population has dropped from what some scientists believe was a minimum of 5000 fish to less than 600. The Nechako White Sturgeon Initiative (NWSI) was put in place to put together a recovery plan, which was split into
two groups, technical working group and the community working group. “The groups worked very hard to get the sturgeon on the endangered species list,” said Frenkel. “We fought hard to get the species on the list. So now it is my frustration that the federal government is not helping with going forward.” Frenkel and the community of Vanderhoof wanted to “get behind” saving the species. “The species have been listed as imperial,” he said. “It has been a passion of everyone that has been involved to do the right thing.” The provincial government has donated $1,500,000 to the project, the land for the sturgeon facilities have been donated on behalf of Vanderhoof, however, the project still requires a partner to come on board to have enough funding to go forward with the construction of the white sturgeon hatchery. According to Frenkel research is still required to deter-
mine what needs to be done to keep the species diverse so that researchers can keep creating and keeping the species from becoming extinct. “The bottom line is that we have to start doing this or the species will go extinct,” said Frenkel. Sturgeon require gravel like surfaces to spawn so that the larvae can find its way between gravel stones where they can successfully mature and stay hidden from natural predators. “Survivability of sturgeon is unknown at this time,” said Frenkel. “The facility will allow sturgeon to mature to the point that they are big enough to fend off predators, therefore will allow the survival rate to increase.” Frenkel feels that the federal government and business groups need to step in and help save the species. “This whole area is engaged in saving this species,” he said. “We have been working on this project for four years.”

Through the investigation the Vanderhoof RCMP were able to identify the male suspect and made attempts to locate the vehicle. While the Vanderhoof RCMP where still investigating that incident, a call of a disturbance on Spruce Street was received where it was alleged that several people had been assaulted, and based on the description provided, the Vanderhoof RCMP determined that the same male suspect as the earlier incident was responsible. While en route to the disturbance call, the Vanderhoof members were able to locate the vehicle as it fled the area. The male suspect was taken into custody without incident.
RCMP Vanderhoof Detachment On July 28 at 2:30 p.m. the Vanderhoof RCMP were dispatched to a report of a deliberate attempt to run over a pedestrian at the A&W restaurant in Vanderhoof. The male suspect fled the scene prior to police attendance.
The male suspect, a 32 year old Vanderhoof resident has been charged with 11 counts total including: 2 counts of assault with a weapon, fleeing the scene of an accident, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, 3 counts of uttering threats, two counts of assault and 2 counts of breach. Pending the official notification of his injuries, the Vanderhoof RCMP will consider laying the more serious charges.
L&M Lumber shutdown for business Christina Millington Omineca Express An anticipated one day shutdown turns into a week at L&M Lumber. According to L&M Lumber manager Allan Fitzpatrick the company has hit a few snags regarding the renewal of their insurance policy in light of the “unfortuante events” that had happened in Burns Lake and Prince George.
“It’s a lengthy process and our brokers are working with companies in London with the finailization of renewal,” said Fitzpatrick. LUA has been insuring the forrest industryies since 1905 had given the industries 30 to 90 days to renew their insurance. “The process had taken longer than expected,” said Fitzpatrick. “We believe we have met a resolution. We are taking the time to catch

Fitzpatrick is hopeful that L&M Lumber
will be back up and running by Aug. 6.

High water increases risk of drowning Last weekend, the BC Coroners Service began investigations into the tragic deaths of eight individuals who drowned in B.C.’s rivers and lakes. These deaths involved individuals from ages 12 to 75 and occurred in a variety of circumstances. With the B.C. Day weekend approaching, the BC Coroners Service and Emergency Management BC are warning residents and visitors to take extra care when engaging in water-related activities in an effort to prevent further loss of life. High runoff from the winter’s snowpack and heavy
rains during the spring and early summer have left many rivers, streams, and lakes with much higher water levels than is usual at this time of year. As well, many rivers and streams, especially in the southern Interior, are running much faster, and at higher levels, than would normally be expected by the B.C. Day weekend. Chris Duffy, executive director for Emergency Management BC, said: “Touring the Interior region of the province recently, I have never seen such high water levels and flow rates at this time of year.” As a result of these unusual water conditions, activities
B.C. outlines Northern Gateway Pipelines cross-examination In advance of the Aug. 3 Joint Review Panel (JRP) deadline, B.C. has formally submitted its intention to cross-examine Northern Gateway Pipelines (NGP) on their Enbridge Northern Gateway Project at the JRP hearings, Minister of Environment Terry Lake announced today. “Our government, as an intervener in the hearings, has some tough questions for Northern Gateway Pipelines that we believe are at the heart of ensuring B.C.’s environment is protected from any and all heavy oil pipeline proposals,” said Lake. “We have made our require-
ments clear: if you want to do business in British Columbia, you must have world-leading polices and processes governing spill prevention, spill response and liability insurance that reduces government and public exposure to risk.” Specific elements of world-leading marine and land oil-spill management will be of particular relevance to the anticipated cross-examination and relate directly to the findings in government’s July 23, 2012 technical analysis, “Requirements for British Columbia to Consider Support for Heavy Oil Pipelines.”
Rip’N the North bike park vandalized Christina Millington Omineca Express Rip’N up the North bike park a place to vandalize rather than enjoy, The beautifully secluded recreation park is located on 7th Street off of Kenny Dam Road, tucked back out of sight of residents in the area. Cathy Fitzpatrick of Omineca Sports says the bike park as been subjected to vandalism over the last 3 years. “Fences have been rammed with trucks,” she said.” Countless parties have taken place in the park.” The park needs to be utilized for its purpose and not vandalized.

that might have been quite safe in mid-summer in other years may not be safe this summer. “The risk in many activities such as rafting, tubing and canoeing is likely to be much higher than might otherwise be expected,” chief coroner Lisa Lapointe said. Lapointe noted that visitors to B.C. are often at particularly high risk because they do not recognize that local waters are likely to be more hazardous than those in other parts of Canada or the world. The water is often colder, lakes have steep drop-offs, and underwater debris can pose unexpected difficulties.
Fats – The Good the Bad and the Ugly A walk down the grocery aisle will confirm our obsession with low-fat foods & supposedly guilt-free options: baked potato chips, fat-free ice cream, lowfat candies, cookies, and cakes. But while our low-fat options have exploded, so have obesity rates. Clearly, low-fat foods and diets haven’t delivered on their trim, healthy promises. A “fat-free” label doesn’t mean you can eat all you want without consequences to your waistline. Many such foods are high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, and calories. The answer isn’t cutting out the fat since our bodies actually need the right type, it’s learning to make healthy choices and to replace bad fats with good ones that promote health and well-being. For years, nutritionists and doctors have preached that a low-fat diet is the key to losing weight, managing cholesterol, and preventing health problems. When most people think of fats in their diet they try to avoid them without realizing that the body actually needs fats to function. Your cells as well as your brain actually need the right fats for your body to do a proper job. Fats keep our skin soft, deliver vitamins, provide fuel, help our brain and cell membranes and more. At a minimum we need about 10% of our daily diet to be comprised of fat Basically, there are two groups of fats: saturated (bad) & unsaturated (good) Good fats: can help lower cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease when replacing saturated or trans fats. They can be found in walnuts, vegetable oils such as flax seed oil, olive oil, in fish (fried fish defeats the purpose), avocados & many nuts. Bad fats: should be eaten sparingly and include saturated and trans fatty acids, both can raise cholesterol, clog arteries, and increase the risk for heart disease. These fats are found mostly in animals products and manufactured oils. Trans fats are used extensively in frying and it takes a long time for your body to get rid of them, so they tend to build up and are usually to blame for that cellulite! These can be found in baked good, cookies, icing, crackers, processed foods, microwave popcorn, and some margarines. Here are some healthy tips: · Choose a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. · Try a vegetarian meal, with plenty of beans, twice a week. · Select dairy products that are skim or low-fat. · Make your own salad dressings. · When using fats, do so sparingly. 1 tablespoon a meal is all you need · Limit your consumption of high-fat foods, such as processed foods, fried foods, sweets, and desserts. Contributed Allan Wishart Having to work nights on a mural for the 2015 Canada Winter Games wasn’t a big problem from Prince George artist Milan Basic. “I sunburn easily,” he said Friday morning, shortly before the 24-foot high mural at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Quebec Street was unveiled. “I had to work at night, because we had to keep it under wraps so no one could see what it would be like – until now.” Shirley Bond, one of the speakers at the unveiling, could testify to Basic’s commitment. “My office is right across the street,” the Prince George-Valemount MLA said, “and I’ve been working late some nights. Whenever I left, I saw Milan working. “I had to do my best not to peek as I went by.” She added that the mural was an acknowledgement that the
Games weren’t just about sports. “This is one of the ways we will have the Games make a lasting legacy, not just in sports, but in arts and culture in the region.” Mayor Shari Green echoed Bond’s remarks about the legacy value of the mural. “It’s helping to change the face of downtown, something we have been working hard to do. With the athletes village just a few blocks away, this will become a hub area during the Games.” She also issued a challenge to another downtown business. “Now the pressure is on Telus to do something with their concrete wall.” Games host society CEO Stewart Ballentyne said he saw some significance in the date for the unveiling. “This is the same day as the Olympics open in London. You may not realize it, but 43 per cent of the Canadian team in London are Canada Games alumni. You will be seeing world-class athletes here in 2015.”
Basic said the job took him just four nights. “I sketched the piece out on Sunday evening, and started painting on Monday. It’s done in spray paint, the same as some of my other larger works.” What is different, he said, is the style of painting. “This is much more photorealistic, which is not what my other murals have looked like at all.” He noted the Canada Games Society had been “fantastic clients, great to work with,” and expressed his gratitude to the city of Prince George as a whole. “Moving here has helped me find inner peace, which is something important to everyone.” Just before the tarp covering the work was raised, Basic summed up why he painted the mural. “I like the colour it brings to Prince George, and it’s a legacy for my children and our children.”

Co-ordinated plan needed for tsunami cleanup Coastal authorities in B.C. have long been putting together tsunami and earthquake preparedness plans. The need is growing greater for the three levels of government to have a definite plan in place to deal with potentially environmentally dangerous debris from last year’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan washing up on B.C. coastlines. Items ripped apart by powerful waves, much of them covered with sea life that could threaten native species, have for months been arriving on the western shorelines of Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii. Residents and others concerned about threats to the pristine nature of coastal areas have been doing their best to remove the material. No one knows, given the unpredictable nature of ocean currents, just how much flotsam will reach B.C. shores. But enough has arrived already to inform provincial and federal authorities of the extent of the problem. The washing ashore of a 20-metre concrete and steel dock in Oregon on June 6 was a further sign that the worst is likely yet to come. The province is in a “fact-gathering stage” on the issue, said Environment Minister Terry Lake, who recently toured Haida Gwaii. His comments that any cleanup plan must be a joint effort between local, provincial and federal governments and First Nations make sense, but indicate the province is not willing to take the lead on tackling this problem. This week’s shockingly low cleanup grant of $50,000 from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for each of the five states affected, shows how low this issue is on that government’s priority list. We hope our federal government, already showing a similar lack of respect for the environment through budget cuts, does not take a similar tack by downplaying this serious issue. A winter wonderland Christina Millington Omineca Express August has arrived. I can’t believe summer is nearly gone. However, I must say, I am one of those people that have the countdown to Christmas marked on the calendar come December 26. I have the best Christmas memories as a child – one in particular that dates back to 1999. I tend to babble when I speak of my family for I have the utmost love for them, and I try my best to convey how much they mean to me through my written word – hence the babble, so bare with me. Firstly I would like to introduce my siblings into the story, Patricia, the eldest and my only sister, Michael, my eldest brother and Patrick James, the baby of the group. My sister and brothers has been the best posse a sister could ask for. However, I seemed to have been the peacekeeper of the group, where everyone else felt the need to pick on one another and cause mayhem for my parents, especially my sister (she’ll love that I told you that). Nonetheless, Christmas seemed to be a peaceful time around the household. Our home was always beautifully decorated; compliments to my Mom, and Dad always had the best Christmas trees, granted he’s an arborist so his Christmas tree standards were high. I always loved when my Dad would drag the most ridiculously gigantic evergreen into the house; the smell that would envelop the room was heavenly, a truly anticipated event. My Mom would dread the very moment my Dad would return home with a tree as she has always been content with a plastic tree that reeked of must and mildew. Festive I know. I must say the scents that would float around the house welcoming the holiday season were of the evergreen propped so proudly in the corner of the living room and fresh baked short bread cookies, Mom’s specialty. The Christmas of 1999 was one that truly meant a lot to me for my Dad made it a winter to be remembered for my siblings and I. It was a lack luster Christmas for we didn’t get any
snow that winter. I need snow to get into the festive mood and I’m sure many of you will agree. A green Christmas just doesn’t cut it. Ontario winters have always been abundant with the amount of snow that would accumulate. A trip to the local snow covered hill with our GT racers was always an event for the Millington clan. We would often return home after spending the whole day out in the freezing conditions battered and bruised. Dad would always let us be a kid out there, as he would often follow suit and partake in our shenanigans. This particular holiday season our GT racers collected dust in the shed and our local hill was muddy and empty. When Christmas morning came around, my siblings and I weren’t up at the crack of dawn to then be ordered back to bed by Mom and Dad, as we would wake them creaking across the old hardwood. It was like any other morning, we woke to the smell of breakfast cooking and to Dad’s excited inner child hollering from the kitchen to come down and see what Santa had left for his four little troops. When we eventually made way to the family room my Dad eagerly ordered us to stand at the back window. The curtains were drawn closed, which only made our imaginations run wild with excitement. “What could it be that has Dad so excited,” I remember thinking to myself as I stood before what could be the grandest gift of all. When the curtains were parted tears rolled down my face as we indeed were blessed with the most precious gift of all that Christmas morning. Snow! The backyard was filled with the white fluffy stuff that we so eagerly had been anticipating all winter. My Dad had spent Christmas Eve night at the local arena shoveling snow from the ice pad into the back on his pickup so that he can give us the Christmas we so desperately wanted – a winter wonderland. Our excitement roared throughout the house as we tossed on our snow gear and headed out into the yard to take in all the snow that would surely melt throughout the day. It was the best Christmas and one that we continue to hold above the rest.

Back to his stomping grounds Christina Millington Omineca Express A childhood dream came to fruition for Corporal Justin Thiessen of the Vanderhoof RCMP detachment seven years ago when he began his policing career. However, it all started in Regina Saskatchewan, where Cpl. Thiessen was required to complete the Depot program, a 24-week training academy before he could gain infield experience. Cpl. Thiessen was attached to troop 12 during his training, which required him to physically and mentally prepare himself to fill the boots of an RCMP officer. Born and raised in Vanderhoof, Cpl. Thiessen ventured far from home only to come back to start a family and fulfill his duties as constable. “I am quite excited to be here,” said Thiessen. “It’s different work from what I’m used to and I enjoy it.” Cpl. Thiessen had opportunities throughout his high school career to gain the “infield” perspective of an RCMP officer as part of his career studies courses. “I wanted to know what it was like in the field,” he said After graduating from NVSS at 18 years old Cpl. Thiessen applied to Depot – he was recruited three years later at the age of 21. With a small town mentality the experience was one that he would remember and apply to his career on a day-to-day basis. “My first week was intimidating with police marching around,” he said. “I kept my head down and did what I had to do.” With a Mennonite background, Cpl. Thiessen stems from a farming
background that instilled family traditions with an opportunity to explore aspirations and become familiar with traditions other than their own. According to Cpl. Thiessen policing goes beyond the uniform and the enforcement of the RCMP, as it comes down to the community and the efforts they put forth as well.
“We have to grow with the community,” he said. “They are our eyes and ears around town.” Cpl. Thiessen spent 5 years of his career working as an “acting supervisor” for the general duties department with the Williams Lake detachment that allowed him to gain experience at a different pace.

“I had more serious files that I was required to bring to conclusion before I could move onto the next file,” he said. “It’s different work here in Vanderhoof and I enjoy it.” Cpl. Thiessen couldn’t be happier fulfilling his duties as an officer in his hometown with the added luxury of raising his family here.

New Gold achieves strong operational and financial performance in second quarter Full steam ahead for New Gold project as the company shoots for the stars New Gold Inc. (“New Gold”) (TSX and NYSE MKT:NGD) today announces financial and operational results for the second quarter of 2012, with gold production of 95,158 ounces at a total cash cost(1) per ounce sold, net of by-product sales, of $472 per ounce. The company’s solid gold production, below average costs and the continued strength of gold prices, led New Gold to another quarter of solid financial results, including an average realized margin of over $1,000 per ounce. During the quarter, earnings from mine operations were $76 million, net earnings were $24 million, or $0.05 per share, and adjusted net earnings were $46 million, or $0.10 per share.
In key milestones, New Gold delivered on the targeted June production start at its New Afton mine and today announces that the mine has reached commercial production. The company also received a ruling from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in late June confirming the company’s partnership with Goldcorp Inc. (“Goldcorp”) at the El Morro project. “Our company continued to build momentum in the second quarter, realizing strong operational and financial results and delivering on key objectives at our development projects that position us well for the future,” stated Randall Oliphant, Executive Chairman.
A musical night for the 4-H District second annual event Submitted Shawn Pyy It was on July 28 at 6:00 p.m. that the Vanderhoof 4-H District held its second annual photography achievement night and auction. The Blue Mountain 4-H club organized the event in the NVSS small auditorium. The MC for the night was Mica K. from the Mapes 4-H club, who volunteered for the job. The evening began with the Canadian anthem, followed by the 4-H Pledge and then the 4-H Grace before the 4-H members began to serve dinner. Once everyone was served, the entertainment began with poem reading, piano music and singing. During the brief break, the guests were encouraged to look at the photography displays and pictures up for auction, while desserts were being served by the 4-H members. When the last poem had been read and the last song had been sung, it was time for the awards and ribbons to be handed out to the young photographers for their hard work on their photography displays and pictures. Rediscover Vanderhoof Valley Diesel Ltd. Valley Diesel Ltd. is owned by Chris Barg and Ruben Peters. Chris and Ruben bought out two of the four original partners in 2005 - 06 and the other two remaining partners in 2008 - 09. At the time of the first sale Ruben had just completed his (CVSE) Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement course and his (CTC) Commercial Transport Certification. Josh, one of their employees now has received his commercial transport technicians certificate and Jay & Phillipp are now working on their commercial transportation technicians Apprenticeships. Chris is a certified sales person and journeyman heavy-duty parts and warehousing person. Valley Diesel Ltd. carries heavy-duty truck and trailer parts, automotive parts, oil and filters for pretty much anything from logging trucks to ATVs.
“We pride ourselves on being honest and fair with our customers, and we have built up the reputation of getting the job done in a timely manner,” Chris answered when asked why he thought customers chose them to come to. “We do heavy duty repairs and servicing as well as being an ICBC designated Inspection facility,” Chris explained. “It’s mostly the people that makes us love Vanderhoof, certainly not the cold weather,” Chris answered when asked what they love about our community. “Vanderhoof always seems to be able to pull through tough economic times and I see it growing because of the mining possibilities,” Chris answered when asked what they thought of the future of Vanderhoof. Drop by and see the guys at 1217 Speedway Road, or give them a call at 250-567-9229

Telegraph Trail Visit the old telegraph route, built in the 1890s, now converted into a series of walking trails. The telegraph line was built during the Klondike Gold Rush to allow for communication between the gold fields and surrounding towns. The line has not been used since the 30’s, but sections of the original trail are there to be explored south of Vanderhoof at Hogsback Lake. The lake is a great place for swimming in the summer and the trail is perfect for hiking or mountain biking. The 10-km Telegraph Trail stretches to Blackwater Road.

• Computer Accessories Brother Printers, Printer Inks, Toners Looking for high-quality, North American-made vinyl decking, railing, or eavestroughing? Give A & V Continuous Eavestroughing a call. Philip Teichroeb, owner and operator of the business since May of 2008, purchased the business from Abe Guenter, who owned it for 12 years. Teichroeb says decking is his favorite part of the job. He uses 68 mil. vinyl which is expected to last close to 30 years. The surface of the vinyl is embossed which makes it slip resistant yet it is barefoot friendly and is not abrasive like some non-slip surfaces. Cleaning is very easy and involves only an occasional hosing down. The vinyl is available in numerous colors. The largest deck he has done was about 1,900 square feet.
The all-aluminum railing he installs is manufactured in BC. It is welded and has an extremely durable powder coated finish. There are different colors of railings as well as different tints of glass from which to choose. The eavestroughing he installs is made and cut to custom length at your home. There are
numerous colors available. Because Teichroeb is present on all the jobs and only occasionally has hired help, one of the challenges that he faces as owner/operator is that he finds it hard to answer calls immediately. Teichroeb is pleased to be offering a highquality, maintenance free product at a rea-
sonable price. All of his products are covered by warranty. His goal is to be of service to the community. “Regardless of what I am doing, the house always looks better when I leave,” he said. When he isn’t on the job, Teichroeb enjoys spending time with his family, fishing and hunting.
