Plans for projects proceed
Adams Lake: Gaming, retail centres on band land move ahead. By Martha Wickett OBSERVER STAFF
While development at the northwest end of town is on hold at the moment, plans for the south side of the highway are proceeding. Plans for a shopping centre on the Adams Lake Indian Band’s Lot 7, land that lies between the Trans-Canada Highway and the back of the Mall at Piccadilly, beside Braby Motors, are moving ahead, say Chief Nelson Leon and band manager Albert Quinn. A 49-year lease on the property was secured with the federal Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Canada several months ago and, since then, negotiations with the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure have nearly been completed. Quinn said word was just received from the ministry that the road design has been accepted. “Mike’s (Fowler) engineers and MOTI are just putting the finishing touches on that. That’s the biggest move in four to six months,” Quinn said, adding that the final design is expected in the next few weeks. Although Glen Bury, formerly with SmartCentres but more recently representing Full Circle Shopping Centres Ltd., was handling the development of Lot 7, Quinn said Mike Fowler has taken over the reins. Fowler could not be reached before press time. Initial plans included two large box-type stores and 12 to 15 smaller businesses. Once the design is finalized, “they could start stripping the top and loading the fill so by next spring they can commence construction,” Quinn surmised. He said he doesn’t know when the road work would start. “I presume they will try to start the same time as SmartCentres. It’s something MOTI See Concerns on page A2

No fire: First responders and police look over the wreckage of a light plane that crashed Monday afternoon in a recently plowed field near the former KOA Campground off Highway 97B.
Four survive plane crash By Martha Wickett OBSERVER STAFF
Four people now have a tale to tell that few can – and a tale that few people would want to experience. A light plane carrying a pilot and three passengers crashed on the outskirts of Salmon Arm Monday afternoon, and all four people survived the impact. The crash occurred just before 2 p.m. According to initial reports, the pilot of the Skyhawk Cessna 172 had just taken off from the airport in Salmon Arm. When the plane had difficulty maintaining
elevation, the pilot attempted to turn back to the airport but was forced to make an emergency landing. She landed in a recently plowed farmer’s field near the former KOA Campground off Highway 97B and 10th Avenue NE. The aircraft sank into the soft dirt and then flipped onto its roof. Fortunately, the wreckage did not catch fire. Occupants of the plane were taken to hospital for examination. The three passengers were released and the pilot remained in hospital. Salmon Arm RCMP report that all four suffered non-lifethreatening injuries.

meaning the board will not be doing a full investigation or final report. The decision was made, she said, because
doing an investigation would not “advance transportation safety.” No names have been released.

Concerns raised about policing council of Salmon Arm, he said, the city was sent a formal letter, seeking any concerns about the gaming centre in that location. The Neskonlith Indian Band, as another neighbouring jurisdiction, has also been asked for input. In the preliminary meeting, Leon said, the city asked questions about whether the centre would increase policing requirements. “We’re still discussing those (concerns) and trying to find out from other areas who have

Storm kills power in 16 spots By Barb Brouwer OBSERVER STAFF
A severe thunderstorm late Monday afternoon thrashed some areas of the Shuswap but not others. The Environment Canada station at Salmon Arm Airport measured only 10 mm of rain – most of it falling within a 10-minute period, estimates meteorologist Trevor Smith. But Observer employee Val McMillen was driving east along the Trans-Canada Highway and says the temperature dropped from 38 degrees in Sorrento to 21 at the bottom of Carlin Hill, where she estimates there was a foot of water on the road. City of Salmon Arm public works manager John Rosenberg said only one tree came down in the Canoe area, but downed trees caused several power outages in the region. B.C. Hydro’s Dag Sharman says a total of 16 outages affected 5,580 Shuswap customers – some for as long as six hours. “An outage from 7:41 to 8:28 p.m. south of Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road that cut power to 2,900 more customers was the result of a bird touching two power
lines simultaneously,” says Sharman, noting crews worked throughout the night to restore power. The Salmon Arm Fire Department responded to six calls during the storm – several involving ringing alarms set off by power outages. “We had one report of a structure fire – lightning striking a home or very close,” says fire chief Brad Shirley. “There was lots of smoke but no actual fire, fortunately. We just checked to make sure the home was not damaged.” Firefighters from Gleneden’s Hall #4 responded to a hydro pole fire just after 8 p.m. Shirley reminds residents they require permits to burn and that only campfires are permitted at this time. That’s a message Ministry of Forests wish to spread as most of the Salmon Arm Fire Zone is now in the moderate to high risk for wildfires. Forestry crews responded to four incidents over the long weekend in the Salmon Arm Fire Zone. “This included a fire in Scotch Creek, where we assisted their local fire department with a three-person initial attack team and a re-

another SAR member, Jan Crerar, spent the night trying to round up a search team to initiate a search for a missing sailboat. The owner, who Schut says lives on the boat, left from Shuswap Marina but returned to another marina instead.
“I think he just got off the lake, but didn’t tell anyone,” said Schut, noting the Coast Guard boat went looking for four hours. “It’s maddening, but I guess, as far as he was concerned, he was all right and he didn’t know anyone was looking for him.”

Judge orders land payment
Grand Opening
SmartCentres site: Purchaser must pay final $2 million to seller.
August 11, 2012 • 10 am - 3 pm
By Martha Wickett OBSERVER STAFF
A BC Supreme Court judge has ordered the parties who purchased land for the planned SmartCentres shopping centre to pay the seller $2 million plus legal costs. In a judgment delivered July 27 in Vancouver, Supreme Court Justice John Savage ruled that defendants Salmon Arm Shopping Centres Limited, Calloway Reit (Salmon Arm) Inc. and a numbered company, 568295 B.C. Ltd., with president Joseph Amato of Vaughan, Ont. – all affiliated with SmartCentres, must pay $2 million to the plaintiff, another numbered company, 0759594 B.C. Ltd., that lists Mike Fowler out of Richmond as president. The ‘594’ company – the seller – launched the lawsuit in April 2010. The seller argued that the purchaser agreed to buy the seven parcels involved for $16.7 million. Two million dollars of that payment was deferred, pending rezoning and subdivision approval. If the purchaser couldn’t get city approvals before November 2009, the purchaser would pay the seller the remaining $2 million by Nov. 15 of that year. The seller had reserved the right to buy back a portion of the lands for residential development. Because no rezoning and subdivision occurred by Oct. 15, 2009 and the purchasers did

The defendants, meanwhile, launched a counter claim for $3.3 million for breach of contractual representations which, they argued, resulted in a significant portion of the lands being unsuitable for development. The defendants stated that the amount owed them for the breach far exceeds the unpaid balance of the purchase price. Although the defendants/purchasers argued that they were not obligated to pay the full price because “warranties and representations made in the purchase agreement are untrue,” the judge disagreed. To summarize a lengthy document, Justice Savage divided SmartCentres’ arguments regarding the seller into three categories: topography misrepresentation, zoning misrepresentation
and citizens’ opposition misrepresentation. Regarding topography, the purchasers had stated that a representative of the seller sent an email on Aug. 14, 2006 stating “the Phase II Environmental confirmed that there are no environmental areas of concern on the lands and the geotechnical report confirmed that we will not require preloading on the commercial lands, both of which are of course great news for us.” However, court documents continued, the topography of the northern half of the purchased lands was not, in fact, suitable for development. Regarding zoning, the purchaser points to parts of the information document provided in 2006 by the seller. In particular, this statement: “The City of Salmon Arm was instrumental in having the lands excluded from the ALR and in preliminary meetings with the Salmon Arm Planning Department,

Can-Corp has received full support and approval in principle with having the lands rezoned for commercial/
residential use. Based on the steady growth the city is encouraging the expansion of commercial development. The city specifically believes that the subject site is ideally suited for commercial development as is evident from its full public support to (sic) of the application to have the lands excluded from the ALR.” Regarding citizen opposition, SmartCentres argued that CASSSA, the Committee for a Strong and Sustainable Salmon Arm, was in

Court dismisses counter claims Continued from A4 “virulent opposition” to its rezoning application, so “significant public opposition to the project is a material fact that should have been disclosed” at the time of the purchase agreement. The judge, however, ruled that the evidence did not show the seller knew of the various limitations alleged, nor did the seller withhold relevant information from the purchaser.
Regarding topography, the purchasers referred to limitations on development under the Riparian Areas Regulation, which weren’t pointed out by the seller. The judge stated that it took SmartCentres’ own experts six RAR assessments before they determined requirements to the satisfaction of the Ministry of Environment. “That belies the ease with which SmartCentres says the deduction can be made.”
Regarding public opposition, the judge accepted the seller’s evidence that he was unaware of community opposition at the time in question. SmartCentres argued that whether or not the seller knew, the fact that such a group existed puts the seller in breach of the warranties within the purchase agreement. The judge stated that such a warranty, where a seller must disclose all facts, even those outside its knowledge, would be an “extraor-
dinary matter...” He also stated: “Had the bargain included warranties as broad as those claimed, why were these alleged warranties not raised by SmartCentres? The first time it is raised is Nov. 17, 2009, immediately after SmartCentres has apparently defaulted on payment under the purchase agreement.” As well as ordering the defendants to pay the $2 million owed, Justice Savage dismissed the defendants’ counter claims.

Check ‘winability’ factor OK, Christy Clark’s approval rating in the latest Angus Reid poll is worrying for Liberals. Only 28 per cent of British Columbians approve of the job she’s doing, compared with 45 per cent approval for Adrian Dix. Conservative leader John Cummins is tied with Clark. And 55 per cent of British Columbians say their opinions of Clark have worsened in the last three months, despite the party and government’s efforts to win back lost support. It could be worse. La Prensa published a Gallup poll that found eight per cent of Hondurans approve of the job President Porfiro Lobo is doing. Only twelve per cent of Hondurans said they think the country is generally going in the right direction. It’s pretty tough to get into single digits. People here tend to be partisans of one of the two main parties, so even the people who voted for the president are giving him failing grades. Though I have noticed an interesting phenomenon. People often say they support the Liberal or National party. But they rarely seem to think it would actually make much difference for the country if their side wins. There’s one big difference in the positions of Lobo and Clark. Presidents can only serve one term under the Honduran constitution. The election isn’t until next fall, but the elaborate primary process is underway and it’s difficult for a president to get anything done in the last 18 months of his term. (No women presidents yet. The left/reform Libre party has nominated Xiomara Castro Zelaya, wife of the Manuel Zelaya, the president deposed in the 2009 coup, but she is a long shot.) By the end of the process, his party - National - will have a new leader for the election. Clark, however, is 10 months away from an election. The party is in trouble in the polls, tainted by scandal and abuses and unable to convince people it actually has a vision or a plan that goes much beyond slogans. And there is the sense of desperation, which is never attractive and rarely produces sound decisions. And Clark, who faced the huge, maybe impossible, challenge of undoing the perception of arrogance and dishonesty caused by the HST fiasco, is now actually a drag on the party’s fortunes. A new leader is always an option. But not a likely one. The obvious candidates – Kevin Falcon, George Abbott, Rich Coleman – are all associated with the Campbell government’s failings. An outsider, like Surrey Mayor Diane Watts, might have a better chance. But every potential candidate would have to look at the polls and the prospects and judge whether the election next year is winnable. There’s not much satisfaction in spending four years in opposition. Paul Willcocks is a freelance columnist who is currently living in Honduras.

Calculating what an ocean is worth Fifty-eight per cent of the risk for an environmentally damaging spill of oil on land, and 100 per cent of the risk should it happen in a marine environment. That’s what B.C. is facing if it allows the Northern Gateway Pipeline project. And on Monday, the government laid out the ground rules to give the go-ahead for Enbridge’s prized project to bring crude from the Alberta oil sands to the B.C. coast, including the demand that if this province was going to accept most of the risks, there should be compensation. The federal government will be collecting some $36 billion of the $81 billion in provincial and federal taxes the Northern Gateway Pipeline is expected to generate over the next three decades. The remaining $45 billion will be split, with
$32 billion going to Alberta, $6.7 billion to B.C. and another $6 billion split amongst the other provinces. That means B.C. would be getting about 8.2 per cent of the benefits of the project, while assuming most of the risk. Unfortunately, of the five conditions listed for provincial approval of a pipeline, the one dealing with fiscal equity is the clearest. Unfortunately, the two clauses dealing with the much more important environmental concerns are the most ambiguous, merely stating a requirement for “world-leading” response, prevention and recovery systems. The environment should be taken even more seriously than the monetary benefits, given that keeping B.C. beautiful provides money in the bank – and more.

This won’t happen while the USA, Russia, France, and the UK continue modernizing their nuclear weapons, thus signalling that these weapons are essential for their national security. It’s hardly surprising that India and Pakistan want to hang on to their nuclear weapons, while others, like Iran, want to acquire them. Attentions parents and friends of teenagers who have skateboards: Almost every night, between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. there have been teenagers skateboarding down the middle of Okanagan Avenue from 30th Street to city hall. These young people are endangering their lives for a three minute thrill ride. Most of them are boys, occasionally a girl. These youngsters are flying down the hill at very high speeds, wearing dark clothing, and no protective gear, not even helmets. They are virtually invisible to vehicles pulling out of driveways and
side streets. Usually, but not always, they are sitting down on their skateboards due to the high speed attained on this long hill. Drivers cannot see them. Please talk to the skateboarders in your family about the fragility of the human body, how easily and suddenly a spinal cord or head injury can occur, or worse, the grief and loss to everyone caused by their untimely death. Teenagers are well-known for thinking that they are immortal and serious injuries cannot happen to them. Do what you can to impress upon
them that they could be killed or seriously injured in a high speed ride down Okanagan Avenue or any other street. I understand the temptation of the thrill; teenagers need to understand that a rush of adrenaline is not worth risking their lives. Anyone who knows who these young people are needs to talk to them and/or their parents before a tragedy occurs. The streets are not safe for skateboarding, especially at night. Kalene Bourque
Not impressed with B.C. hospitality I have been travelling to B.C. for over 40 years and I am increasingly angry with the way tourists are treated. How hard is it to tell someone where to put the garbage? We asked several businesses and were told in
no uncertain terms where we could put it. I understand it is an inconvenience to be nice to your customers, God forbid. And next time I won’t ask. I won’t be telling anyone what a great time I had and I will leave my
garbage in the ditch; apparently that’s where it goes! I’ll be telling every one I know from here to Germany and back. Heather Struk
Save JL Jackson land for new school Just my humble opinion, but it seems to me that building a new college downtown will just exacerbate some of this community’s problems, not the least of which is the fact that we bus five- to 12-year-olds out of

young families are having children and lots are moving here. Where will these children attend school? Just asking… Joan Sturdy
Clark’s attentions fickle Politics certainly makes for strange bedfellows. It wasn’t many months ago when B.C. Premier Christy Clark was flirting with Prime Minister Harper at a hockey rink and hugging Alberta Premier Alison Redford (for the TV cameras) at some conference. Back then the three right-wingleaning amigos were atop Enbridge’s gurgling Northern Gateway oil-filled waterbed acting like playful snuggle bunnies. But Christy Clark, just like love itself, is a fickle thing. When the media recently covered a story
about how Enbridge’s oil-filled beds have a history of springing leaks that can cause vote-losing political damage, Clark panicked. She jumped off the Enbridge bed so fast she almost fell into the arms of BC NDP leader Adrian Dix. There is no need for British Columbians to watch farcical comedy on TV; the slapstick antics of capricious Christy Clark are far more bizarre. Lloyd Atkins

Crowds of amazed Shuswap residents saw a midnight rainbow as a bright full moon followed a brief but heavy rainstorm this week. The bow reached from Granite Peak to Bastion mountain. Seven persons were hospitalized when a Greyhound bus carrying 14 passengers was forced off the highway by a speeding car and hurtled over a 30-foot embankment three miles east of Canoe. Focusing a lens on dark issues By Barb Brouwer OBSERVER STAFF
Sarah Wallensteen’s heart has been tattered, but the 2008 Salmon Arm Secondary grad’s passion for using photography to bring injustice to the world view burns bright. Wallensteen spent the last 18 months travelling to places where human life often has little value. In January 2011, at the age of 20, she joined PhotogenX, a not-for-profit, grassroots community of artists dedicated to the eradication of global issues of injustice. Wallensteen and the other members of a the 10-person team sponsored by YWAM - Youth with a Mission – began their tour in Brazil. They moved on to South Africa, Egypt, Israel, Palestine and Albania. The most painful assignments were in the red light districts in Athens, Greece and in Thailand, says Wallensteen. “Girls in Nigeria are being tricked by family members and sold into prostitution, told they’ll get jobs in a hotel then basically given to pimps and told they have a debt to pay,” says Wallensteen. “But they can never pay it off and they’re owned by the pimps for the rest of their lives.” The team worked with an organization that is trying to rescue the girls, but it is difficult because curses are put on them before they leave Nigeria and they are afraid if they leave the trade, their families will be harmed. “That was one of the harder environments because it seemed pretty hopeless,” says Wallensteen. Work in Thailand was also in the redlight districts that are very much accepted there, to the point that when a rural family has a daughter they’re thankful because she can go to the city, says Wallensteen. The girls are usually about 16 when they go and don’t really know what will happen until they get there, she says, noting getting out is hard because they’re pressured by their families to support them. In other instances, well-dressed pimps go to rural villages and promise families they’ll take their children, usually between the ages of 10 to 12, to good jobs in the city. They end up in the red-light district too and when they are older and no longer appealing to the clientele, they cannot go home because they have no memory of

Wallensteen said she “hit rock bottom” after several months because the group moved so often, switching cultures and issues and visiting the most desperate and dark places. “It takes a while to get to know a people and their culture, and your heart breaks for them,” she says. “I felt like after each place, I’d pick up the pieces of my heart, chuck them in and go on to the next place.” There was more hope in Swaziland where the team helped a family who has added eight adopted children to their own family of eight. They are trying to build an orphanage in a country that has the highest rate of HIVAIDS in the world. “We worked on developing a farm, not just for the family but also the community,” Wallensteen says, working the soil, walking the children to school. “It’s amazing, the joy these people have – they understand what family and community mean because they have nothing else.” Wallensteen, whose tour with YYAM ends this month, admits readjusting to life in North America is challenging. “I see so much plenty and hear so much complaining about nothing issues,” she says, noting she has had to separate two very different worlds in her head. “I went
Anytime. Anywhere.
through a stage of feeling guilty about things I have, but you can’t live like that either.” Wallensteen plans to take a few months to readjust before heading to Vancouver Island University in January to begin a degree in journalism. “I have photography now, but I want to improve writing so hopefully, in the future, I can go to these places and really give people a voice,” she says. “One thing I’ve learned through the experience, is you have to look at it one person at a time – if you can change one person’s life, you can at least change their world.” Wallensteen and her team have included their experiences in a book called Broken – a Call to Restore the House of Humanity. The group will be in Salmon Arm to share their experiences and their book at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14 at Broadview E-Free Church or 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at SAGA Public Art Gallery.

Premier peruses plan Downtown campus: Response pleases mayor.
By Barb Brouwer OBSERVER STAFF
Premier Christy Clark admitted she “walked right into it,” at a Women’s Town Hall meeting in Salmon Arm July 30. Clark made the comment when she was explaining how her government plans to ensure British Columbians can get the education and skills training they need to work and prosper in their home communities. She noticed a smiling Mayor Nancy Cooper who, along with Bill Laird and other members of the Downtown Community Campus Committee, were due to present their request for provincial support in bringing the Downtown Community Campus initiative to fruition. Following the private meeting, Cooper said the premier went through the report prepared by Economic Development manager Lana Fitt and Downtown Community Campus co-ordinator Margaret Hardy. Feeling positive about the premier’s response, Cooper said she asked a lot of questions. “She wanted to know why we thought this would be a good project, why it would help, who’s involved,” Cooper said, noting the community-driven project is supported by CSRD, First Nations, Economic Development Society and City of Salmon. “I
did tell her we thought this would help to build a regional workforce, attract skilled workers and their families and retain our youth.” Cooper added the committee believes the project would be a catalyst to increase financial vitality of existing business – in tourism, retail services and manufacturing. “We’re not asking for a hand out, but a hand up – guidance on the process of achieving a piece of the Jackson site at fair market value,” said committee chair Bill Laird, noting the initiative is separate from, but supported by, Okanagan College. “There isn’t a better thing Salmon Arm can do for itself than to move the campus downtown.” He says there is much to be done to bring the downtown campus into existence, which is why 2020 is the opening date the committee is aiming for. “There is no doubt in my mind that this is going to happen, but it’s going to take a while,” he said. “We’re not going to go into debt; we’ll get the land first. I’m talking like a developer – you do a bit at a time and you pay for it as you go.” Shuswap MLA George Abbott described the meeting as good and constructive. “There’s a great deal of work to be done,” he said. “These are very

Bodies benefit from immersion in nature HEALTHY BITES
Serena Caner Besides healthy eating, I spend a lot of time encouraging people to be active. Summertime is the perfect time to take your kids, grandkids (or parents) outside. Not only is it fun, but there is a growing body of scientific evidence indicating that spending time in nature is essential to both physical and emotional health. The Japanese, in particular, have been studying what they call Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing.” In a recent study of 280 people in Japan, scientists found that walking through a forest or other wooded area for a few hours lowered concentrations of the stress hormone cortisol, lowered the pulse rate and lowered
blood pressure. These all translate to a healthier heart and mind. In his book, Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv discusses some new studies that suggest exposure to nature may reduce the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and improve all children’s cognitive abilities and their resistance to negative stress and depression. In fact, you don’t even have to move in nature. In a landmark study in the ’80s, a man named Roger Ulrich demonstrated that hospital patients who viewed nature, such as trees and animals from their rooms, recovered faster, spent less time in hospital, required
fewer painkillers and had fewer post-operative complications than those patients who did not. In Salmon Arm, we are very lucky to be in close proximity with natural areas. Whether it be taking a walk in the bird sanctuary, mountain biking in South Canoe or swimming in the lake, we don’t have any good excuses not to get

McNeill’s squad ends Olympic run “The difference is that we played the best 12 players in the world and we had to play spectacularly as a team. I think we did quite well regardless of the outcome. It has been a remarkable journey and an exciting few weeks here. I’m so proud of this team.” With these words, former Salmon Arm resident and Canadian Women’s Basketball Coach, Allison McNeill, summed up her team’s loss in the quarter-finals to the USA and the completion of the team’s Olympic run. Team Canada was defeated by the U.S. team, which is favoured to take the Allison gold medal, by a McNeill score of 91-48. HEAD COACH The team’s other contests in its 2-4 record were much closer, losing 58-53 to second-ranked Russia, defeating Great Britain 73-65, losing to France 64-60, defeating Brazil 79-73 and taking a loss against formidable Australia, 72-63. The U.S. women’s team has won 38 consecutive Olympic games and are the fourtime defending Olympic champions in the quarter-finals. Canada was unable to contain the Americans as they kept the fast pace on offence. At half-time the score was 42-21. In the second half, Canada continued to try and mount a comeback like they have done throughout the tournament, but the top-ranked team was just too much to handle. U.S.A. advances to the semifinals on Thursday.

Changing from Tips to Backs By Martha Wickett OBSERVER STAFF
The SilverBacks will be getting much younger this season. A new relationship is being developed between the Salmon Arm SilverBacks Junior A Hockey Club and the Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association – and that relationship includes a renaming of two minor hockey teams. Tim Giandomenico, president of SAMHA, explains that Troy Mick, new head coach of the Junior A
organization, met with the minor hockey association soon after arriving in Salmon Arm to see what his organization could do to become good partners with minor hockey. One of Mick’s suggestions was to get minor hockey players wearing SilverBacks jerseys. “It was very refreshing to hear,” said Giandomenico of Mick’s attitude, adding that because replacing all the minor hockey jerseys would be expensive, starting with the first level, atom development, is a good first step.
ch e Com
So Salmon Arm’s two atom development teams will be called SilverBacks this season instead of Silvertips, and will wear both home and away SilverBacks jerseys, while, at the Peewee level and above, teams will continue to sport the classic Silvertips jerseys. Based on his past experience in Vernon with Mick, as well as Mick’s performance since coming to Salmon Arm, Giandomenico said Salmon Arm is very lucky to have him onboard. Mick, meanwhile, said he’s committed to having a healthy

relationship with minor hockey. “We definitely want them to know we’re serious about having a relationship... You will definitely notice a 360-degree difference with the involvement with minor hockey.” Along with jersey changes, Mick is planning other interactions. They include inviting bantam and midget players to come to the SilverBacks’ practices, as well as supporting minor hockey See SilverBacks on page A14

Ranahan aims for the top
On target for gold
By Cavelle Layes
Ben Shaule has brought home another gold. The 20-year-old Salmon Arm resident came in first in the Canadian 3D Archery Championship held outdoors, at Silver Star Ski Resort in Vernon Aug. 4 to 6. This is the second gold medal Shaule has won at a national level this year. He also took first place at the winter indoor Canadian Archery Championship held in Fort Saint John this past winter.

Hanging on to championship A Salmon Arm resident is returning home from the World Senior Master Middleweight Championship in Kansas as the reigning champion for the second year in a row. Mickey Sims boxed his way to the final round, ultimately setting him up to share the ring with Mark Colbert, an Iowa City competitor. Sims, at 5’6”, describes Colbert as 6’3” with a reach advantage. Colbert was given an eight count by referees and Sims was able to keep him on his toes for the next two rounds, ultimately earning him the championship belt once again.

One of Salmon Arm’s hockey stars is moving up the ranks and may soon be competing at a national level. Si x t e e n -y e a r-o l d Alexa Ranahan has had a busy year. She was recently chosen as one of 24 hockey players from British Columbia to play on Team BC for the second year in a row, and is now one of six chosen to compete for a place on the women’s U18 National team. To prepare for the Team Canada selection camp, the Team BC summer camp, held in Salmon Arm this year, paired up with the International Ice Hockey Federation mentoring program for the first time. This allowed Team BC to play three games against Team Kazakhstan at the Shaw Centre. During these games Ranahan was given the chance to play alongside the Kazakhstan players. “It was interesting being switched onto their team,” she says. “You don’t understand any of what they were saying while on the ice or in the dressing room. No one knew English. I just focused on what I had to do on the ice and everything else kind of clicked.” Hitting the ice with women she has never met is nothing new to Ranahan. While she has played against the other five girls on Team B.C., she has never played with

You don’t want to let them down.” If Ranahan is chosen during the women’s U18 selection camp in Calgary, which began Aug. 2 and wound up Aug. 14, after press time, she will move on to become part of the U18 Team Canada, where she will stay to train until Aug. 16. After which, the team will fly to Minnesota to play against Team USA. The team will also be competing in the Worlds in Finland during the Christmas
break. “It is really exciting,” she says. “You just don’t think it is ever going to happen. It has always been my dream to be on a national team whether it’s U18 or U22 or the national team. It is nerve-racking to know it is right there, this is my chance.” Ranahan has set her sights on U18 Team Canada and hopes to do her best to achieve her goal. “It is my first year, of course I don’t expect to make it for sure, but I am definitely going to push for it. I think I have a good chance, but so does everyone else.” Whether she makes the team or not, Ranahan believes the experience itself will provide her with what she needs to advance in her career. “The people you meet are amazing, everyone you meet is so positive and wants you to do well in your hockey career. You learn so many things,
even little things, on and off the ice, that help you improve. Everyone that you meet and the things they can teach you makes the experience completely worthwhile. They really show you what it takes to make it to the next level, where you need to be. That’s a huge part of it.” The memories she gains throughout her hockey career are also something she values. “This year’s best memory would be when we were in the Notre Dame tournament,” says Ranahan. We were in the semifinals and we had a 3 to 2 score. There was five seconds left in the game and both me and Hannah were in the penalty box, and the other team scored to tie it up. We got out of the box and I got a pass and was able to take a shot to get the game winner. That sent us into the finals.” Ranahan, who has been playing since she was five, thanks her
coaches for getting her to where she is today. “Shaun Lund was my midget coach for my first year. He was always so competitive and let me do my own thing. He really started it all off and showed me where to go. I guess I just ran with that.” “My coaches Gina Kingsbury and Rebecca Russell have also been great. Gina has been to the Olympics twice and won two gold medals and Rebecca has been on a national team. They are just really great people to have around and they know what it takes to make it. They push us really hard and it really helps us out.” Ranahan does not plan to back away from the world of hockey any time soon, and has already set her goals for the future. “I want to get a full ride scholarship to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and play on some sort of national team.”
SilverBacks main camp set for Aug. 23 Continued from A13 coaches. SilverBacks’assistant coach, Brandon West, was hired as coach mentor by the minor hockey association, so he will be working with the initiation, novice
and atom groups. Mick himself said he will be donating a lot of his time to minor hockey. “We’re really opening up the door to development. At the end of the day, it’s all about the kids. We want every single kid to have
aspirations to play for the team, or to support the team,” he said, noting that donning a SilverBacks jersey is a great first step in the new relationship. “We can’t expect people to come and watch us. We have to earn their trust...”
Says Giandomenico: “I’m really excited for the coming year, how the two organizations will work with each other to make both our organizations stronger.” The SilverBacks’ main camp runs Aug. 23 to 27. Season’s tickets are still available
for the SilverBacks inaugural season under Troy Mick, which starts Sept. 8. The first home game is Sept. 14 versus the rival Vernon Vipers. If anyone would like to contact Mick, the team’s email address is: silverbackfans@gmail. com.

to more than 1,600 of Canada’s fastest swimmers aged 18 and younger, from more than 180 swim teams across Canada, ranging from athletes just qualified for the competition, right up to Canadian senior national medalists too. Cooper had a great competition, as she arrived ready to race in all five events that she swam. Throughout the
weekend, Cooper advanced and bettered her rankings every day, as she passed by swimmers faster than her in every event and broke three team records in the process. Cooper’s best ranking came in the 50-metre butterfly, where she ended up 13th in Canada for the 14-year-old girls. She just missed making it to the finals by a mere 0.44 of a second, as she
eclipsed the team record in a time of :30.21 seconds. Cooper also swam fast enough in the 50m freestyle to add that event to her slate of qualified races to compete in at next season’s Canadian Western National competition as she finished in a time of :28.43 seconds. This was a great meet for Cooper, and will undoubtedly be a good stepping stone to

Success: Salmon Arm Tennis Club members Karen Hoover, Cynthia Langford, Carol Ross, Marianne VanBuskirk, Antje Breugem and Shannon Qiodravu took fourth spot in their division at the Miele Provincial Team Tennis championships.
Both the men’s and women’s Interior teams, comprised of Salmon Arm Tennis Club members, wound up locking up fourth place in the Miele Provincial Team Tennis event held Aug. 3 to 5 in Vancouver. In the 4.0 men’s event, the Salmon Arm team, representing the Interior, came fourth in the province. The team’s members were George Kocsis, Jim Kocsis, Bob Langford, Kevin Pearson, Solo Qiodravu and Ryan Harrison. Also placing fourth in the province was the ladies contingent from Salmon Arm, who competed in the 3.5 Division. This team consisted of Karen Hoover, Cynthia Langford, Carol Ross, Marianne VanBuskirk, Antje Breugem and Shannon Qiodravu. Teams from around the province, including Victoria, Sechelt, Vancouver, Delta, North Island, South Island, Coquitlam and Squamish, joined Salmon Arm at many of the prestigious tennis clubs in North and West Vancouver, with Coquitlam winning the 4.0/4.5 Men’s Division and Sechelt winning the Ladies’ 3.0/3.5 Division. “I am thrilled with the Salmon Arm Tennis Club’s showing against some top-level teams in the province,” says VanBuskirk, Salmon Arm
Tennis Club’s president. “Team tennis is becoming more popular, which helps to promote league play in regions with a goal of bringing groups of athletes together from various locations.” All teams were invited to attend the Odlum Brown Vancouver Open finals held the same weekend at the Hollyburn Country Club that featured international
play for a $200,000 prize pot. The team provincials were sponsored by Miele and organized by Tennis BC, an avid promoter of community team tennis. Both Salmon Arm Tennis Club teams qualified to enter the provincials after putting in a good showing at the Interior Championships held in Kamloops, July
20 to 22. Coming up for the Salmon Arm club: they will be hosting the Junior Rookie Tour, Aug. 18 and 19. And the Salmon Arm Open Tennis Tournament takes place Sept. 21 to 23. “Both of these attract athletes from around the province and we look forward to hosting these events,” says VanBuskirk.

THE SALMON ARM
SILVERBACKS SPOTLIGHT He’s the kind of player that generates a buzz as soon as he touches the puck - and Salmon Arm native Shane Hanna is looking forward to a big sophomore season in the BCHL after joining the SilverBacks in trade from Penticton last November. The ‘Backs home-town defender says playing just down the road from his house is full of advantages, “The fans are great, it is nice to live at home and have all the people you know coming to watch each night.” Shane says the addition of Troy Mick to the organization has caught his attention, “Everybody says he’s a great coach so I’m excited to get going and see how we do.” Summer hasn’t provided a break for the 18 year old with an impressive work-out regimen, “Weightlifting every Monday, Wednesday and Friday; field training on Mondays and Wednesdays and on-ice 3-3 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Packed” Hanna says his personal goal for the season is to work towards a scholarship, while quickly noting that the playoffs are the team goal and one of importance to him.

Weekes says he gets “outspiration” for his lyrics from what he sees around him. And though they often reflect dark issues, he is a happy man. “I am so happy I can tell the stories of war. If I were sad, I don’t think I’d be able to articulate it,” he says, noting he observes the ‘human carnival.’ “Most of what we talk about is not what we see internally, but what we see on the outside.” Weekes derives peace from meditation, something he calls the quiet time in the spaces between his thoughts. “There’s so much information, and people are wanting so much,” he says. “If you don’t (meditate), you get lost in the confusion.” In terms of his lyrics, Weekes says there are enough people singing about love, and that humankind has to somehow deal with the fact that the planet is on the brink – that global warming does exist. He says conflicting messages imparted by corporate media are confusing people. “Someone has to let us know about it, to say ‘listen, this is where we are and this is what we need to do,’” he says of global warming and its effect on the planet.

While the lyrics are thought-provoking and sometimes dark, they are delivered in an upbeat package. “You can have a happy beat to the message – it wouldn’t be entertainment if you didn’t,” he says. “We’re gonna have a Routes reggae revival party.” Weekes will also lead Watch us Watch You, with Alex Cuba, the Boom Booms and Shred Kelly in a workshop at the Barn Stage Saturday, Aug. 18 at 10:30 a.m. “From Woodie Guthrie to Bob Marley and long before Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, the songwriter has provided the medium to inform the global community about issues that are local or international in scale,” says the program description. Watch Us Watch You is about writing music that makes a difference to our world culture.” One of the most anticipated and well-attended events of the year, the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival opens Friday, Aug. 17 and plays until Sunday, Aug. 19. Horoscope ARIES (March 21 - April 19): These last few months asked you to consider the ways in which you talk to yourself. You find comfort as you feel yourself settle in, not only in your physical living space, but also in the home of your body and soul. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20): You find warmth from people around you, whether neighbours or service workers you don’t always realize are there. Small moments of kindness help you to imagine bigger, knowing you’re worth the big dreams. One of these contacts could become a potential love alliance. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): Venus exits your sign after months of hanging out. You’ve been getting in touch with your desire to be accepted. It has, at times, been a daunting, inspiring, challenging, hopeful process removing barriers to love. Now, you get to take that self worth and use it to make you money. CANCER (June 21 - July 22): Think about the biggest celebrity. Imagine his or her life, always smiled at and getting the best tables. The downside can be equally dramatic, with public criticism. You want to be seen, but need safety. You reconcile these two drives, and find renown comes closer. LEO (July 23 - August 22): Some patterns are harder to trace to their root than others. Focus on goals and a future that moves you. Progress will ask you to purge at least one barrier, giving you a new sense of lightness and freedom. Your dreams become especially beautiful and might provide keys to prosperity. VIRGO (August 23 - September 22): Your friendships go through a burst of healing, as you find invitations to spend time in good fun. Many help you understand the joy you deserve. If you’re looking to bring in more money, focus on your dreams. They are the most likely to attract the big sums.

You career is where you increasingly feel your contentment will be. The harder you work, the quicker the breakthrough arrives. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): I’m not promising you perfection, but I can say you’re steadily moving towards a more ideal vision. You’ve been so focused on the work you’re doing, that you may have missed the progress you’ve made. As your achievement is recognized, you realize your growth. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21): You’re more adept at finding the funds you need for your projects and dreams. The investigation and application process might feel like a roller coaster ride, but will prove prosperous if you stick it out. You want love that reaches into your soul. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19): For those who seem to shine with success, there are those who helped them along the path. You’re now open to seeking a favour of another, whether through tangible opportunity, advocacy, advice, a helping hand, or countless other ways that many people can assist you. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Your work environment becomes fun and dramatic. Be mindful of office romances, attractions lead you to see a more loving vision of yourself. Understanding the way you take care of you expresses your love for your self and is a powerful lesson. ROETERS, HANK Gone Fishin! With broken hearts we said good-bye to Hank Roeters; we regret to announce his sudden passing at the age 57 in Revelstoke , BC on July 22, 2012. Hank was born July 14, 1955 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. His family immigrated to Kamloops in 1959 later moving to Silver Creek, Salmon Arm and then Sicamous. Left to cherish Hank’s memories are his loving spouse Barbara Birch, daughters: Jennifer (Megan), Rebecca (Jason) and son Oliver (Amanda) Roeters. Mother Corrie, Sister Lia and brothers: Al (Terry), James (Margret), Jack (Linda), John (Shawnde), Brian (JoAnn) Roeters. Hank was predeceased by his father Henry and brother Gerry Roeters. Hank leaves behind six grandchildren and one great grandson. Hank was a dedicated and hard working employee for Poncho Holding’s Revelstoke, Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club/Grooming Society Sicamous , L Turner , Tappen, Gary Collins Logging, Quesnel, Receiver Transport, Revelstoke and owner operator for J.O.B Enterprise, Cambie , BC. Hank was a “Jack of all trades”. If he couldn’t do it or fix it, you were in big trouble. He had passion for singing and playing the guitar, horses, hunting, gardening and most of all fishing on the Shuswap. Hank was a rough tough man however we would see the tender side playing with their puppy Angel. Hank wanted people to know he was “Real” and not a “Saint” when he died. His favorite passage was Proverbs 16:9. Times haven’t always been the easiest for his family. It was about sticking together and being there for each other. Being grateful, living in the moment and focusing on what is really important. He was a loving spouse, best father ever and no matter what life brings we were lucky to have his Strength, Wisdom and Love. A special “Thank you!” to all the people who attended his funeral and all the beautiful flowers and cards received. Also to Bowers Funeral Home and Crematorium for walking us through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Sicamous Bible Church or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Funeral Service was held at the Sicamous Bible Church on July 28, 2012. Email condolences may be sent through Hank’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com

GARDENS

SALMON ARM
A very peaceful feeling… This garden on 16th Street is a beauty. With a small pond, and the rock work that surrounds the home, the combination of colours is what really sets this garden apart, contrasts of light and dark, sharp and soft, give this space a vibrant look. Privacy is achieved by the use of pyramid cedars, a clever use of the Japanese maple along with yucca, geraniums, roses and the rock work gives it a very spacious feeling. The brick walk and the soft edges of the lawn add to the interest of this space. Overall a beautiful space to call home. By Sherry & Laura, Salmon Arm Observer
Do you know someone whose garden goes above and beyond? Do you think your garden is a cut above? Don’t be shy! Let us know the owner’s name, address and phone number! The garden does not have to be huge or elaborate. It could be on a balcony or a front yard or whatever space you have, as long as it is unique. Send your entries by email to advertising@ saobserver.net or drop off at the Observer office 171 Shuswap Street NE Salmon Arm.
