Luanne Armstrong is well known for her poetry and non-fiction but nearly half of her published books have been aimed at the young reader fiction market. In I’ll Be Home Soon, Armstrong chronicles the harrowing story of Regan, a 13-year-old who lives with her mom in Vancouver’s downtown eastside. When mom doesn’t return from a promised two- or three-day absence, Regan is left to fend for herself and, eventually to unravel the mystery of her disappearance. In the two opening paragraphs of I’ll Be Home Soon, Armstrong lures both young and adult readers into Regan’s gritty world: “Regan checked the street behind her to make sure no one was looking at her. She ran into the alley, stopped at the fallen gate, picked her way through a backyard littered with bags of trash, twisted pieces of bicycles, rusty grocery carts and broken glass. Blackberry vines and white-flowered morning glory were slowly eating it all up. “She climbed through a broken window into the abandoned house, picked her way past the lumps of human waste on the old wooden floor, up a broken staircase and out another window. Then she squatted on the roof the porch, in the shadows, just under the overhang of the roof to watch the street.”
Nelson-Creston constituents will learn who the next Green Party provincial election candidate is on Aug. 19 when the constituency association holds its annual general meeting in Nelson. Green Party organizers are banking on federal leader Elizabeth May’s strong showing in Ottawa will translate into party support at the provincial level when voters go to the polls in May 2013. “Greens finished third in this riding in the 2009 election, with 7.2 percent of the vote, and we hope our candidate can win over the many voters who did not vote in the last election when turnout fell to 60 per cent,” said riding executive member Mary Rathbone. ”Colleen McCrory was able to capture a record 21.5 per cent of the vote for the Greens in the 2001 election, when 75 per cent of registered voters came out to the polls.” The meeting will also feature speakers on two of the hottest environmental topics in the province — the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort.

teacher Ian Cunliffe won’t be taking any time off. On Aug. 8, Cunliffe will begin in Sparwood to run and walk over 1,100 kilometres across B.C., and will run from Yahk to the top of the Kootenay Pass on Aug. 12/13. An attempt of a marathon a day for 22 days will draw public attention to the decade of cuts to B.C. public education by the Liberal government. In his six years of teaching, Cunliffe has witnessed the erosion of funding to B.C. schools and the impact these cuts are having on students. With an education funding shortfall once more projected for 2013, he feels that he can no longer remain silent and has decided to take a stand. “For years now we have been asked to do more with less,” he
said. “We’ve reached the point where the average teacher is spending over $1,000 of their own takehome pay trying to bridge the funding shortfall in order to meet the needs of their students. “It’s time for people to demand that government commit to adequately funding our public school system to ensure every student has an equal opportunity to succeed.” Cunliffe is a primary school teacher and teacher-librarian with the North Vancouver school district. He is a parent of two young children and has completed several ultramarathons, including the world’s toughest race, the Marathon Des Sables (a 240-kilometre race across the Sahara Desert). Brewmaster keeps Kokanee, Bud, Keith’s on tap
Who: Scott Stokes What: Beer Where: Columbia Brewery When: Started at Columbia Brewery in 2004, has been brewmaster for five years Why: “As I learned more about beer I got more and more passionate about it.”
BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Scott Stokes was on track to become a medical student at Thompson Rivers University when another line of work began brewing in his mind. The biology major had a summer co-op job at Columbia Brewery and began thinking that a career in brewing might not be a bad idea. “I began to wonder if I really wanted to go to school for another four years after I got my degree,” he says. He earned his science degree in 2002 and went to work for a microbrewery in Kamloops, only an hour’s drive from his hometown of Sorrento. “I learned a lot about brewing in that job,” Stokes says. “And also that making beer by hand is a lot of hard work. Shoveling hot mash on a hot summer day isn’t fun.” When a position to work under thenbrewmaster Graham Kendall at Columbia Brewing came up in 2004 he jumped at the opportunity and began working his way up the ranks. Three years later, he accepted a transfer to work as Kendall’s assistant in Halifax’s Alexander Keith’s brewery, one of six Labatt breweries in Canada. “We (he and his wife, Leanne) had sold our house and were 36 hours from flying to Halifax to look for a house when I was asked to become the brewmaster here,” he recalls. He and Leanne scrambled to find accommodation in what was then a hot housing market and were lucky to get a house on Scott Street that wasn’t listed. “Becoming a brewmaster was my goal, anyway, so I was happy to stay here,” he says. During his years in Creston, Stokes has earned a brewmaster’s diploma by taking

courses, many by correspondence, and on the job training. “It’s worked out pretty well,” he smiles. “Nobody ever told me when I was young that you could earn a good living making beer. But now, with craft breweries popping up all over, there are more and more people doing just that.” Stokes is part of a small community of brewmasters in large Canadian breweries, so it still isn’t seen as a viable career by many. “There aren’t a lot of technically skilled people available,” he reflects, “so there aren’t a lot of aspiring brewmasters in line for my job.” In a job that he describes as “50 per cent science and 50 per cent taste,” Stokes shoulders large responsibilities and is on call 24/7 if anything goes wrong in the brewing process. And, with Columbia Brewery producing 15 different kinds of beer (Kokanee, Kokanee Gold, Kokanee Light, Keith’s IPA, Keith’s Red Amber Ale, Bud Light, Busch, Lucky, Wildcat Strong, Winchester Draught, Labatt Blue, Labatt Lite, Labatt Genuine, Kootenay True Ale and Brava), there is plenty that can go wrong. Each of the beers has its own distinct recipe and each recipe has to be adjusted according to the size of batch that is being made. “There are about seventeen different batches going in the brewhouse, nine in fermenting tanks and as many as seventeen more in the filter room — there’s always something to tweak.”

While the recipe is key, it’s the manual tweaks — minor adjustments to ingredient measurements or a host of other variables — that keep each beer’s flavour consistent. Two years ago, Stokes took on a huge challenge when Creston was designated to be the first ever brewery outside of Halifax to brew Alexander Keith’s beer. Logistics — transporting ingredients and packaging, and shipping the finished product to market — are incredibly expensive in the brewing business and it’s much more cost-effective to have beer made in two or more breweries than to make it in a single location. “That was a really good learning experience for me,” he says. “It was challenging and we were under very high pressure to meet the standards — it has to taste exactly the same as the ones made in Halifax. And we had orders coming in before we were actually ready to go.” “I learned to question assumptions.” Malt and other ingredients can be slightly different than the ones used in Halifax and the difference in water and even elevation — “boiling at 600 metres compared to sea level makes a difference” — mean that the recipe can vary significantly in each location and matching the taste is largely a matter of trial and error for the first while. While Stokes and other managers and lab workers constantly monitor each brew for taste, the ultimate arbiter is a tasting panel in the Anheuser-Busch
brewery in St. Louis, which gets samples weekly. “I hate when we don’t get a good report,” he smiles. Stokes and the Columbia Brewery management team have been working recently to add yet another label to the mix. They are hoping to get approval from corporate headquarters to begin making the necessary capital improvements to produce Budweiser, one of the most popular beers in the U.S. Its recipe includes up to 30 per cent rice in addition to hops and barley malt and its brewing time is about four times longer than other Columbia Brewery products, so Stokes could soon have another steep learning curve ahead of him. Somehow, that planning has continued through the brewery’s busiest months. “We are stressed to the max from April through July,” he says. “We’re running full bore 24/7, trying to get every last can of beer out that we can. It’s always tough in the summertime; it feels like it’s never going to end. But that’s just the way it is.” With Labatt breweries being part of the giant Anheuser-Busch InBev global conglomerate, Creston’s operation is something of an anomaly, a small-town brewery in a big city business. But Columbia Brewery has a strong reputation for efficiency and good labour relations. It’s also extremely productive. At peak production, the brewery rolls out up to 1.5 million cans of beer a day, in addition to 225,000 bottles a shift, plus kegs. And it doesn’t happen by magic. “People at this brewery always find a way to make something happen. We always come together to find a way. This might not be a logical place to have a brewery, but it does what it does extremely well, so in that way it makes sense. And the water here is really good.” Stokes seems surprised when he realizes that with only eight-and-a-half years in Creston, he is one of the longest serving managers. “Now that I think about,” he says, shaking his head, “the time has gone by in a flash. I could count the days that have dragged by on one hand. Usually when I look at the clock and see it’s 5 p.m. I wonder where the time went. “There’s always something to keep you busy. With all this equipment there is trouble-shooting or maintenance or fullblown rebuilds. And we have a lot of equipment. … “We have a great team here, and that includes all of our 140 or so employees. It’s fun to come to work. And part of my job involves drinking beer. What more could you want?”

From page 1 Left to rely on her own resourcefulness, and skills learned in kung fu class, Regan pulls the reader along with her as she struggles to maintain her independence and figure out what has happened to her mother. Armstrong, who has a new non-fiction book due to be released this month — The Light Through the Trees: Reflections on Farming — can tell a story that engages readers of all ages, as six earlier books aimed primarily at young readers prove. With short sentences, a basic vocabulary and fewer than 200 pages, I’ll Be Home Soon keeps readers engaged and makes Regan a convincing and very likeable teen. Armstrong is an adjunct professor of creative writing at the University of British Columbia who continues to work primarily from her family farm on Kootenay Lake, where she grew up. She is currently working on a book about the ethics of autobiographical writing.

Shingles Shingles is the common name given to a viral rash caused by the varicella zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After causing the outbreak of chickenpox, the varicella virus becomes inactive and remains in certain nerves in the body. Shingles occurs after the virus becomes active again – often many years later. The reason that the virus reactivates is unclear but it is thought to be due in part to lowered immunity. Shingles can occur anywhere on the body, but it most often presents as a line of blisters wrapping around the body from the spine to the ribs. The appearance of the rash is often preceded by pain or burning. The eruption of fluid filled blisters then occurs. These blisters may break open and crust over and often are accompanied by itching. Some sufferers also experience fever or chills, achiness, headache and fatigue. A person who has shingles can pass the virus on to individuals who have not had chickenpox (such as newborns). There are several factors that increase the chance of contracting shingles. Shingles occurs most

frequently in those over fifty years old. The presence of other diseases such as HIV also increases the risk. Medications such as chemotherapy drugs and anti-rejection drugs also enhance the risk of developing shingles. There is no cure available for shingles. There are prescription antivirals which can both decrease the length of the attack and reduce complications. Painkillers such as codeine and other medications such as gabapentin may reduce pain and discomfort. Recently a vaccine (Zostavax) has been introduced to prevent shingles. Zostavax is most effective in people aged 60-69 and reduces the occurrence of shingles by half. The most common complication that is caused by shingles is post herpetic neuralgia (PHN). PHN is the result of damage to the nerves caused by the virus. This damage causes the nerves to send exaggerated message of pain to the brain. Shingles is a relatively common affliction for which there is no cure. While there are medications to treat it, the use of a vaccine to prevent it supports the adage about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure.

Another law enforcement official said that information investigators had obtained about the purchase of the AR-15 rifle indicates that it was bought locally and apparently legally, as were the other guns, adding, ‘There’s nothing nefarious there,’ — from a New York Times article about the Batman movie killer. Page was an army veteran who had been discharged under less than honorable conditions. He had a criminal history. Most importantly, Page had been publicly involved in the White Power movement since 2000. Lojong slogan 47: Practice with body, speech and mind
It is easy to think of meditation and Zen training as just a mental exercise. Even on Facebook they advertise that you can meditate like a Zen monk in one minute and get a clear, sharp mind. But according to slogan 47, true spiritual practice engages our whole being: our body, our speech and our mind. The idea is to practice so that our whole being is thoroughly and completely permeated with our spiritual values, and not, in any way, separate from what we do, say and think in daily life. Wholehearted practice shows in the body. It shows in how you handle yourself physically and in how you relate to even the most ordinary objects in your life. A Zen teacher can see the depth of your practice in each movement. So working with the body is a very powerful way to sustain practice. Body practice is not about forcing your body into shape as if you were working out, doing yoga or going on a diet. No matter what condition your body is in, you
can still contact the world with gentleness, awareness and openness. When you practice wholeheartedly, it also shows in your speech and emotions. Instead of speaking impulsively,
A

we speak simply, directly and with the conscious intention of injecting loving-kindness and gentleness into every situation. In the phrase, “body, speech and mind, speech refers not only to talking and expression, but to the world of emotions, as well. When hot emotions arise, meditation and Zen training help us find a small time and space when and where we can calm down before we speak or act. In this way, our actions, our words and our thoughts are not driven by
ingrained emotional habits. Whole-hearted Zen training also shows in your thinking patterns. Meditation and mindfulness training is nothing other than noticing from moment to moment exactly how your mind works. What do you do inside your head? What do you think about most often? Are you in the past a lot of the time? The future? Busy with problem solving? Or are you engaged in figuring out a way to add more sensual pleasure to your life? Each person has a different tendency. Meditation and mindfulness practice affords an opportunity to know our habits of mind and let them go. This is the secret of creativity. Applying the practices of meditation and mindfulness to the activities of mind will eventually reverse the habits of preoccupation and self-absorption that take up so much mental energy. As a result, your mind becomes less tight. It begins to relax and turn outward. See SLOGAN, page 8

Canadians must learn from history
To the Editor: Thank you, Pat Martin (“Canada Not Part of the U.S.A.”, July 19 Advance) and all the Canada Day protestors, for getting a message to MP David Willks about Bill C-38. On Canada Day, I had a chance to discuss Bill C-38 with him and express my opinion. Of course, Bill C-38 is about so much more than our sovereignty. By using allocations to limit debate, the Harper Conservatives again showed their contempt of Parliament. Bill C-38 eviscerates many of Canada’s historic environmental laws so that unrestrained economic development at the expense of environmental protection can take place. Some cabinet ministers have called anybody who stands up to protect the Earth and wants a livable future for our children “radicals” and “extremists”. The Harper Conservatives are at war with Canadians who want to protect our resources for future generations. It was very appropriate for Pat and the Canada Day protestors to carry a banner stating Albert Einstein’s wisdom, “The world is a dangerous place to live because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” Wilks spoke up against Bill C-38 but in the end did not have the courage to vote against it. Einstein was well aware of what would happen to his country, Germany, and also Europe and how dangerous it would become because of the people who didn’t do anything about it. Have we learned from history? We Canadians still have a chance to do something about it. Henry Dahle Creston
Science is a way to gain knowledge
To the Editor: The sole purpose of this letter — and there is no political agenda here — is simply to let those with the holierthan-thou view on life not get away with their inept thinking, or, more likely, their lack of it. After all, they do have all the answers. As a former science teacher for more than a few decades, I find the statements made by the person who wrote the letter “Scientific Knowledge not Needed” (July 26 Advance, page 7) totally reprehensible and ignorant to the core. I doubt that this person would be able to utter such tripe at his age, as without scientific endeavours, he would have been long dead. Human lifespans have almost tripled since the time of the Bible as a direct result of

scientific questioning. Unthinking acceptance of religious dogma and the like has allowed more suffering, death, abuse, misery and skullduggery than any other human endeavour (take a good look at the history of mankind). Without a fault, it has been the exploitation of fear and guilt to manipulate and control. It is largely responsible for our cavalier treatment of the Earth — after all, the Bible states that all the wild things were put here for our use and exploitation. I just find these sorts of statements so disappointing when they are accepted as truth. I know I garner the wrath of the denizens of the “Christian Valley”, but I am tired, time and again, of having to listen to this constant barrage of propaganda. There are many ways of looking at our world and gaining knowledge from it. Science is a very powerful way of doing so, but I have come to learn that there are many other ways of looking at the world and getting information from it. You are delusional if you think you have all the answers. Bruce Paterson Creston
Real story of rescue at Goat River To the Editor: (Re: “Ontario man rescued from Goat River,” July 19 Advance, page 4) The last paragraph totally surprised me and made me chuckle because I think it refers to me: “The rescue was made more challenging when two males at the scene confronted police officers, challenging them to fight and refusing to leave the site when requested. The males did not want the rescuers on the property, Gollan said. The pair could face obstruction charges.” My father always said, “There are two sides to every coin,” when he read or watched a news item in the media. So I want to tell you the other side of the coin. I bet if we really had “confronted police, challenging them to fight”, I would be writing this response from behind bars. If having an RCMP officer screaming at you from such a considerable distance that we couldn’t tell who he was yelling at, as there were numerous parties around, some on the car bridge, the railroad bridge and the other side of the river, and using the F-bomb every second word, then I guess this can be construed as “refusing to leave the site when requested”. This was all taking place in my backyard, 30 yards from my back door. I had just come home to find RCMP vehicles had blocked off the Goat River bridge and the RCMP officers in my driveway. Is it out of line to ask someone in charge and expect to have an innocent question answered when in your own backyard? To be met by an excited pair of officers, one of which was threatening arrests and charges, totally blew us away.

Creston Search and Rescue has asked me personally to use my property at the riverbank to practice its rappelling skills and river rescue techniques for the last four years. It annually cleans out debris from the river below the bridges, where kids throw old bikes to TVs to a fridge, a commendable and awesome job to which they don’t get enough credit. However, I guess the police officer and Lorne Eckersley are not aware of this relationship with the Creston Search and Rescue team. Ask the Creston fire department if I have ever expressed my desire not to have them on my property at any time or on this occurrence perform a rescue. After all, it could be my treasured daughter, my precious grandchildren or any one of my neighbors or friends and relatives, or the many who use the watering hole up river from my place. I would definitely not want to hamper a rescue of any nature willingly. This officer grabbed my 110-pound daughter on her upper arm and placed his hand on her back and pushed her. She lost her footing and stumbled, almost falling forward upon the embankment of rocks. What would any father think? What could I do? He is a police officer!raise funds for your group incident or I had an after-rescue discussion with this organization. same police officer. We agreed if he had us in a callapproached dave to calmer state, a lot of energy and stress organize a could have been avoided Bottle Drive by both parties. I asked if it would be unreasonable if I asked for him to phone my daughter to apologize, to which he readily agreed. Now, knowing the other side of the coin, you can imagine my surprise when I read the July 19 paper, after the RCMP officer and I had resolved the issue. When did RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan and Lorne Eckersley receive their information? And why did the article show myself, my friend and daughter in such opposition to the Creston Search and Rescue and RCMP? A closer look at the art of imagination
I am a perfectionist. Much as it has benefits, it also has its drawbacks. I also have quite an imagination but not of the creative kind. I paint what I see, not what I imagine. This summer, I have been giving free demos and workshops during my days
came to my own work). Imagination makes the world go around. It is the vision someone has of the future that pushes them to go beyond the limits of ordinary thinking; an idea that they can’t let go of — a dream they want to turn into reality. They imagine the possibilities and set about making it come into existence. I believe that is how we have arrived at the place we find ourselves now as a species. The telephone, the light bulb, indoor plumbing, space exploration, flight and art are all a by-product of someone’s imagination. When man first began making his mark on the world, he only recreated what he saw; our capacity for imagining what could be, had not been developed yet. We only thought about what was. As we began to be able to think “What if?”, we began to use the strength or power of imagination to create all manner of things for the advancement and enhancement of ourselves and our lives. The world around us has become what it is today because of the imagination that turned dreams, wishes and ideas into reality. Where would we be really without the imagina-

I have given three demos in various mediums and have been awed by the results produced by the children and adults who have participated. Perhaps one of the problems with my artistic expression is perfectionism. Bob Ross, the oil painter, has said, “There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.” I, until recently, did not share that view (especially when it
tion of the Wright brothers, Einstein, da Vinci and others? What we would we do without fiction? Sure, non-fiction can be interesting and exciting (as a student of anthropology and history, I can attest to that), but the imagination of some becomes the enjoyment and escapism of others. I love Ray Bradbury, Stephen King and Robert Ludlum, to name a few. Their imaginations have given me hours of enjoyment, changed the way I think about some things and made me sleep with the lights on (just last month). How dull life would be without imagination — all of us thinking the same, doing the same, being the same. In T.H. White’s The Once and Future King, we would be like the ants that Arthur spends some time with, just mindlessly going through the day, with no wants or desires as we’d have no imagination to fuel them. Maybe that’s what really separates us from “animals”. When I first started to paint with my granddaughter, Betty, we had endless arguments about what was being painted. I’d tell her, “You can’t use that colour!” and she would ask, “Why?” I’d tell her it wasn’t supposed to be that colour and she would ask, “Why?” To my surprise, I really had no answer for that question

except, “That’s just the way it’s supposed to be.” Strangely enough, that did not satisfy her four-year-old mind and she began an endless litany of, “I can make it whatever I want.” Can you imagine that? I was telling this story to my son and he said, “Mom, she’s just using her imagination. What’s wrong with that?” I realized then that even as an artist (save the medium I paint on, which is stone) I was stuck in a box that limited me and suppressed my imagination. I have been struggling to change that ever since. The art of imagination is no small thing. It has become the focus for me personally in the hope that the more I’m willing to let go of what should be and consider what could be, the more I’ll be able to grow as an artist and as a person. Tomorrow, I’m giving a free workshop at the chamber of commerce from 1-2:30 p.m. on having fun with watercolours for kids as well as adults. There is room for 10 people, and all the materials are supplied. Albert Einstein once said, “Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions.” If that’s the case, I’m looking forward to the main feature. Lori Wikdahl is a Creston Valley artist.
Family an important part of our society
Arguably, one of most important components of any society is a well functioning family: mom, dad, a couple of kids, decent morals, clear rules, communication, love, understand-
dren. Follow this model and you have a pretty good chance to succeed. Turn this upside down and failure will be the end result. How do I know? I was on both sides of the aisle and observed plenty of both throughout my life. What do you do if you are in a less-thanperfect situation? Start where you are. Dream, desire, change, work on it. Start with yourCertik self. There is nothing to lose, but you do have a good chance to win it all. No matter how young or old you are, whether you are a kid, mom, dad or grandpa/grandma, make it work. Remember, many of us make better grandparents than parents just because by the time we “arrived” as parents, our kids were on their own already. You cannot change the past but surely you can do something about the future. A last bit of an advice: Love no matter what, and be there for the others. Vladimir Certik believes that thinking outside the box and engaging fellow citizens may bring simple solutions to complex problems. The West Creston resident can be reached at 250-402-0055.

ing, patience. I know there are wonderful single moms and single dads but the truth is that the basic unit of every society has always been family as described above. Usually, the father had the role of provider while the mom took upon herself a nestbuilding and children-raising role. The best way to guide kids is to lead by example, being honest with each other, admitting mistakes and growing together. Dads should imprint on boys respect for their mother and protecting their sisters as they grow. This is especially important, as it breeds future fathers who will know how to properly relate to their wives and raise their own chil-

Sunny Woods offers fresh produce and more in Crawford Bay
open every day
BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Crawford Bay is about as far from Calgary as a person can get, at least in terms of size. But it was the perfect place for the owners of Sunny Woods Farm when they decided to leave the big city with their one-and-a-half-yearold son. “We were both working, working, working, and had a kid in daycare,” said Jennie Hodgkinson. “I wanted Chris to have a different life than city life.” She and her husband, Nick, moved from Calgary to Crawford Bay in 1996. A year later, they started Sunny Woods Farm — and started a 15-year journey of supplying Kootenay Lake’s East Shore with everything from pet supplies to bedding plants to fresh produce. Sunny Woods began life in the garage attached to the Hodgkinsons’ house, and offered pet food and supplies, and novelty gifts. The garden market came along in the late 1990s, and the shop later expanded into a new building, made with logs the couple harvested from their property. With annuals brought in from Creston, and a selection of garden decor, soil and fertilizers, Sunny Woods offered a service of great value to East Shore residents. “There was nothing here for miles,” said Hodgkinson. “The support was unbelievable. They didn’t have to go to Nelson or Creston. They could buy a little at a time and come back.” And the market garden has been a hit, too, with squash, potatoes, carrots, onions, pumpkins and, at times, up to

before fruit and vegetables are ready locally, the Hodgkinsons are already bringing them in from the Okanagan before phasing in local products. “We just keep bringing it in closer and closer as it’s available,” said Hodgkinson. The local products extend beyond vegetables — Creston Valley beef, jam and honey, as well as preserves from Pick of the Crop, are available. Hodgkinson said tourists are often surprised to find such a well-stocked garden shop in Crawford Bay — not to mention the artisan shops that line Highway 3A.

Perhaps that’s because of the rural location — when Hodgkinson moved to Crawford Bay, there was no satellite TV, just CBC, and a small video store. “I felt a huge sense of relief,” she said. “We just fit into the community and the lifestyle so well. The city was not me.” And she’s since had every rural experience imaginable, from massive storms to regular power outages to herds of elk ripping down the fences. “It wasn’t disheartening,” she said. “This is what life is like.”

Ninety-nine years ago, Arthur Lymbery was persuaded to open a small store at Gray Creek, then an isolated East Shore outpost with thrice weekly sternwheeler service. Later, it became the busy terminus of the Kootenay Lake ferry, and he added a post office, gas pump and auto camp. Those things are gone, but the business remains in the family, now a twostory emporium that claims to be the “Woodstove and Fireplace Capital of the Kootenays” and “The Most Interesting Store You’ve Ever Seen.” The slogans are from the clever mind of Arthur’s son, Tom, employed in the Gray Creek Store since boyhood, and now its proprietor emeritus. While Arthur sold anything anybody needed — a billiard table and sundial were two more unusual items in the 1920s — Tom took things much further, adding an insurance agency, woodstoves and chainsaws. “I needed a chainsaw, but when it came in, it sold before I got to use it,” he says. “A local man asked, ‘What do you do after you’ve sold everybody one?’ We still haven’t got to that point.” (When ICBC’s Autoplan insisted on street addresses instead of box numbers, the store’s cul-de-sac was christened

With an inventory of 20,000 items, the store’s brochure boldly declares, “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it.” Lymbery has extended his marketing genius to the community at large. He

coined the term “Best Shore”, and when B.C. towns were encouraged to erect berms for Expo 86, created some unusual welcome signs. “We didn’t qualify for any grants, but I thought here’s a good time to put up a sign,” he says. “I made them with a chainsaw. Boaters can prevent invasive species from spreading CENTRAL KOOTENAY INVASIVE PLANT COMMITTEE
Clean. Drain. Dry. These simple steps will prevent zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species from spreading into the waterways of the Kootenays. Aquatic invasive species, such as zebra mussels, Eurasian water milfoil and New Zealand mudsnails have devastating impacts where they are introduced. They can ruin fishing and recreational opportunities, alter aquatic habitat for plants and animals, and block water intake structures for hydropower. “Hydropower facility costs associated with an infestation include the installation of control systems, antifouling paints, cleaning, and potentially, lost power production caused by clogging of the trash racks,” said Sheila Street, chair of the Central Kootenay aquatic invasive species working group. “In a U.S. Columbia Basin impact study, the total estimated capital cost of a zebra mussel infestation for hydropower facilities, not including power losses, is estimated at over $8,800 per mega watts of hydro plant capacity with about $160 annual operating cost per mega watt capacity.” Although no impact studies have been conducted on the Canadian side of the basin to date, the capacity of about 7500 MW, translates to about $7.8 million in potential economic impact. “Our waters are precious” said Margaret Hartley of the
Slocan Lake Stewardship Society (SLSS). “We use them for recreation, drinking and power generation. Zebra mussel infestations would affect all of us. It could mean anything from higher hydro bills for all of us or taking the kids to the beach and finding nothing but a smelly bed of dead mussels.” Aquatic invasive species hitch rides on boats, equipment, fishing waders, and other gear to spread into new water bodies. If there is a place for water to collect, there is a chance that zebra mussels or other invasive species may be transported. Boats heading for B.C. that have zebra mussel stowaways have been stopped at checkpoint stations in Idaho and Washington; however, there are currently no checkpoints for boaters coming from eastern Canada. Luckily, zebra mussels have not yet been detected in B.C. waters, although early detection monitoring activities for the species has been very limited in B.C. “We can stop their spread by cleaning boats and equipment of visible debris, draining water from all conceivable places — including bilge, buckets, ballast water and wells — and letting boats and equipment dry for 30 days before entering a new body of water” said Crystal Klym, program manager for the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC). “These simple acts can protect our waters.” With funding from the Columbia Basin Trust and FortisBC, and in partnership with SLSS and the province of B.C.,

the CKIPC is installing signs at boat launches on Slocan Lake and associated waterways to remind users to clean, drain and dry.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” said Klym. “By preventing these species from entering our lakes and rivers, we can save millions of
dollars in impacts in the future”. For more information, or if you would like to sponsor a sign, contact CKIPC at 250-352-1160 or visit www.kootenayweeds.com.

Public help needed Rowing club receives to find screech owls $5,000 to create program WESTERN SCREECH OWL TELEMETRY PROJECT
When biologists embarked on a study of the endangered western screech owl in 2009, they were not aware of how much the success of their project rested on the hands (or ears) of the public. West Kootenay residents, to date, have been integral in finding new territories (four of eight territories monitored last year were reported by local landowners), helping monitor owls and conserve valuable habitat on their properties. Once again, the public is being asked to listen for the calls of the western screech owl. “Because of their nocturnal habits and elusive ways, these birds have a certain allure with people,“ says biologist and project manager Doris Hausleitner. “We have really appreciated the leads we have received in the past and we are hoping that we can find a couple of new territories this year. Although the western screech owl is listed federally and provincially as an endangered species, their habitat is offered no real protection on private land. The western screech owl in the West Kootenay region typically reside in low-elevation areas adjacent to water, precisely where people also like to live. In fact, over 90 per cent of locations (collected from owls wearing small radio backpacks) have occurred on private lands. Biologists have followed owls on eight different territories from the Creston Valley to the Columbia River and from the border of the U.S. north to Slocan City. “For these territories, there are approximately 150 landowners involved, added Hausleitner. “So far, every single one of them has cooperated positively with the project which we are really pleased about.
“Getting all the residents of a particular owl’s territory together to view an owl territory has been very successful. A landowner might not think they have high-value land for wildlife when they look within their property lines, but when they
CRESTON VALLEY OSPREYS ROWING CLUB
The Creston Valley Ospreys Rowing Club has been awarded $5,000 by the governing body of Rowing Canada to develop an adaptive rowing program in the community. Adaptive rowing is a worldwide initiative that provides an opportunity for people with disabilities to participate in rowing. In recent years, adaptive rowing has become one of the fastest growing areas of the sport in Canada. Stable, safe and comfortable boats are now available with specially designed equipment to enable people of all ages with a wide range of disabilities to enjoy the freedom of rowing. This generous grant will go a long way towards upgrading the club’s facility and equipment to meet adaptive requirements. Club president Julie Miller worked with the BC Rowing’s adaptive coach to bring this initiative to Creston. She has also developed a liaison with our own Cresteramics, and will be offering the adaptive rowing program to two clients and a staff member from Cresteramics. We look forward to the new members joining us and benefitting from the beautiful environment of the Kootenay River. For the 2012 season and

see the significance of their property on a larger scale, a sense of collective responsibility sets in. Some have even invited biologists to walk their properties to give them ideas on how to enhance their land and keep important wildlife trees for the owls. This type of habitat conservation will benefit a multitude of species. As a direct result of the project, biologists have applied to the province to provide conservation status on approximately 150 hectares of Crown land on three owl territories.
beyond, the club will continue to grow its masters programs (25-plus years), and to recruit a new batch of junior rowers from Grade 7, as well as inviting students from Prince Charles Secondary School to experience the sport. As the club settles comfortably into its role as a recreational rowing club, it is appropriate to remember the six Creston enthusiasts who founded this rowing club on Canada’s best rowing river: Rob Armstrong, John Griffioen, Mike Poznikoff, Steven Poznikoff, Mike Ramaradhya and Milan Uremovic. This group had a powerful vision that brought an exceptional
opportunity to our community, which has resulted in racing successes in B.C. and in the U.S.A. PCSS graduate Katrina Tarrant, who has achieved a rowing scholarship to the University of Washington, must also be acknowledged. She was given the introduction and encouragement by former club coach Uremovic, and through her dedication and hard work made the grade. We are sure to hear of her in the future as her talent becomes widely known. For more information on the Creston Valley Ospreys Rowing Club, email creston valleyospreys@gmail.com.

Motorists must be more cautious, says cyclist BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Cycling isn’t supposed to be a contact sport, but according to one Creston cyclist, it often nearly is on local roads. In a recent four-day period, Rick Smith experienced two close calls, one caused by a driver’s lack of attention, the other when a driver “buzzed him — intentionally, it seemed, passed too close, despite having with plenty of room to share the road. In the former incident, a car was driven without even looking right in front of Smith and another cyclist. Smith anticipated that might happen and was prepared. “It was likely a momentary error in judgment or a simple moment of undue care and attention on the part of a motorist, said Smith. But the latter, which took place while he was southbound on Highway 3A, heading up a hill, didn’t seem so accidental. Smith spotted the pickup pulling a utility trailer in his rearview mirror, and was prepared for it to pass.
“There is no safe place to stop on that part of the road to get out of the way, there is no guard rail

to protect you from the rather steep cliff on the right and the very little shoulder that exists was
so full of debris that it was not possible to ride on it safely,â€? he said. “Hence, I was essentially riding on the white line as far over to the right as I could.â€? There was no oncoming traffic, but rather than giving Smith some extra room, “they flew up the hill past me with the wide trailer missing my shoulder by no more than 13 inches. The force of the air dam that he was pushing almost blew me off of the road and down the cliff. ‌ “I must admit that I am not that easily rattled on the bike, but that scared me and later made me quite angry. Over the years, I believe that I have developed a pretty good feel for the road and the attitudes of the motorists that do pass me while on the bike and I know when I’ve been ‘buzzed’. This is unforgivable in my eyes.â€? Although these incidents were the most recent, they were hardly the first Smith has witnessed. “Over the years, within the group of people that I have been riding with, we have experienced a number of what I will call ridiculous and unwarranted ‘attacks’, ranging from being cussed out or
buzzed at high speed to actually being slapped and having beer bottles thrown at us, he said. Smith said that people are often surprised to learn that he’s cycled along Highway 3A — for many, the potential dangers outweigh the potential enjoyment. As a result, many haven’t been on their bikes for a long time. “It saddens me to hear that but I fully understand and respect their decisions and points of view and would be fibbing if I were to say that these thoughts have not gone through my mind from time to time, as well, said Smith. Motorists aren’t the only ones who have to be more careful, though; cyclists have to take responsibility, too, by obeying the rules of the road. Cyclists are required to ride as far to the right as is deemed safe and ride in single file, as well as wear a helmet. Riders who ignore the law “give all of us a bad reputation and do nothing to establish any credibility or good relationships with the motorists that we share the road with, Smith said. He would also like to see local governments get in on making the roads safer for cyclists.

Narrow shoulders, rumble strips and potholes create hazards that push riders closer to automobile traffic. “I am not naĂŻve enough to expect that the purse strings will miraculously open up and all will be solved,â€? he said. “There are real challenges out there and prioritization is a reality. There will always be discourteous cyclists and motorists that will be in conflict. ‌ Education is obviously the key for all parties involved to keep these issues to a minimum.â€? A good start, Smith said, might be for drivers to give cycling a try. “I have always felt that I have been a conscientious and defensive driver, but since I have been on the bike and gone through a few less-than-pleasant experiences; I believe that I have become an even better and more aware driver,â€? he said. “They say that an artist who paints will never look at a tree the same way again, and I feel that a driver that spends some time in the saddle in the traffic will never look at a bike or a pedestrian on the road with a judgmental eye again.â€?
Owls
From page 13 In addition, commercial landowners have been notified of owl use on their properties and regional districts have used the spatial data from the project in their official community plans. Together with private landowners, habitat is being conserved for the western screech owl one territory at a time. The western screech owl telemetry project is funded by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, Columbia Basin Trust, FortisBC, Habitat Stewardship Program and the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation. Project biologists are still searching for owls to monitor by radio telemetry in 2012. Not only will this data be used in habitat conservation, but also for species recovery provincewide. Recordings of the western screech owl can be found at www.owlpages.com. This call, which will only be made when the bird is perching, can be heard at night and should not be confused with that of the common snipe. If you have heard this owl or you have any further questions please contact Doris Hausleitner at 250-5057768 or dorishaus@ shaw.ca.

DOGS IN CARS
Every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car even for “just a minute”—while they run an errand. Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs: • on a 25.5 ℃ day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 37.7 ℃ to 48.8 ℃ in just minutes. • on a 32.2℃ day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 71℃ in less than 10 minutes. • animals can suffer brain damage or death from heatstroke in just 15 minutes. WISE BUYERS READ THE LEGAL COPY: Vehicle(s) may be shown with optional equipment. Dealer may sell or lease for less. Limited time offers. Offers may be cancelled at any time without notice. Dealer order or transfer may be required as inventory may vary by dealer. See your Ford Dealer for complete details or call the Ford Customer Relationship Centre at 1-800-565-3673. ‡Ford Employee Pricing (“Employee Pricing”) is available from June 14, 2012 to August 31, 2012 (the “Program Period”), on the purchase or lease of most new 2012/2013 Ford vehicles (excluding all chassis cab and cutaway body models, F-150 Raptor, Medium Trucks, Mustang Boss 302, and 2013 Shelby GT500). Employee Pricing refers to A-Plan pricing ordinarily available to Ford of Canada employees (excluding any CAW-negotiated programs). The new vehicle must be delivered or factory-ordered during the Program Period from your participating Ford Dealer. This offer can be used in conjunction with most retail consumer offers made available by Ford at either the time of factory order or delivery, but not both. Employee Pricing is not combinable with CPA, GPC, CFIP, Daily Rental Allowance and A/X/Z/D/F-Plan programs. ‡‡No purchase necessary. For full contest rules, eligible vehicle criteria, and to enter as a Ford owner, visit www.ford.ca/shareourpridecontest (follow the entry path applicable to you, complete all mandatory fields and click on ‘submit’) or visit your local Ford Dealer for details. Open only to residents of Canada who have reached the age of majority, possess a valid graduated level provincially issued driver’s license, and are owners of Ford branded vehicles (excluding fleet customers and all Lincoln and Mercury models). Eligible vehicle criteria includes requirement that it be properly registered in Canada in the contest entrant’s name (matching vehicle ownership), and properly registered/plated and insured. Non-Ford owners can enter by mailing an original 100 word essay on “what they like about Ford”, with their full name, full mailing address, email, daytime phone number (with area code) to: Vanessa Richard, Pareto Corp., 1 Concorde Gate, Suite 200, Toronto, ON, M3C 4G4. Contest closes at 11:59pm (PST) on the last day of the 2012 Ford Employee Pricing campaign which will be no earlier than August 31, 2012. Limit of 1 entry per person. Up to 8 prizes available to be won in Canada in 3 possible prize categories, each worth up to CAD$50,000. Chances of winning are dependent on the total number of entries received up to each 10,000 interval of unit sales under the Employee Pricing campaign (“Draw Trigger”). Odds of winning decrease as the contest progresses, more entries are made into the contest, and opportunities for Draw Triggers lessen. Skill testing question required. Offer only valid from August 1, 2012 to August 31, 2012 (the “Program Period”) to Canadian resident customers who own or are currently leasing (during the Program Period) a Ford Ranger, Explorer Sport Trac, or F-150 to F-550 (each a “Qualifying Loyalty Model”), or any competitive pickup truck with a pickup bed (each a “Qualifying Conquest Model”) and purchase, lease, or factory order (during the Program Period) a new 2012/2013 Ford F-150 to F-550 (excluding Raptor) (each an “Eligible Vehicle”). Qualifying customers will receive CAD$1,000 (the “Incentive”) towards the purchase or lease of the Eligible Vehicle, which must be delivered and/or factory-ordered from your participating Ford dealer during the Program Period. Limit one (1) Incentive per Eligible Vehicle sale, up to a maximum of two (2) separate Eligible Vehicle sales, per Qualifying Conquest/Loyalty Model. Each customer will be required to provide proof of ownership/registration of the applicable Qualifying Conquest/Loyalty Model and the ownership/registration address must match the address on the new Buyer’s Agreement or Lease Agreement for the Eligible Vehicle sale. The offer is transferable only to persons living within the same household as the eligible customer. This offer can be used in conjunction with most retail consumer offers made available by Ford of Canada at the time of factory-order or delivery (but not both). This offer is not combinable with CPA, GPC, Daily Rental Allowances, or any other Targeted Loyalty Programs. Taxes payable before Incentive is deducted. Dealer may sell or lease for less. Gray Creek Store nearly a century old
From page 11 The signs declared Gray Creek a metric-free zone — due in part to mix-ups between imperial and metric measurements that caused headaches when building the new store — and touted the community as home to a huge gold boulder supposedly lost in Kootenay Lake. (Lymbery became part of the story when two would-be treasure hunters arrived in the late 1960s in hot pursuit. They left empty-handed, but he still has a sign with the company logo.) A voracious reader — he usually has three books on the go — Lymbery ensures the store is well stocked, especially with local history titles. “If I wanted a book, it was just as easy to buy several and sell the rest,” he says. A lifelong resident, save for a few years of high school in Vancouver, he’s often asked about Gray Creek’s past, and usually has the answers. He’s a past-vice-president of the BC Historical Federation, has been president of the Gray Creek Historical Society since its inception, and leads tours of local historic sites each summer. He and wife Sharon spend several months each year in Mexico, and on their most recent trip, he got a good start on an as-yet-untitled memoir, based on Tom’s Corner, his monthly column in the East Shore Mainstreet. (He also writes Tom Sez, a list of quotidian observations.) Lymbery, 83, sold his insurance business but never really retired. He stops by the store every day, although his son and others are now in charge. His grandchildren have become the fourth generation to work there. As its centennial nears, the store is planning a celebration — and eyeing further expansion.

Having just come home from Toronto’s North by Northeast Festivals and Conference, and playing a sold out 10,000-person festival on Vancouver Island in July (including appearances by k.d. lang, Emmylou Harris and Buffy SaintMarie) the band is hitting the road again for its third major tour this year, playing at Creston’s Snoring Sasquatch on Aug. 14. The Whistler-based
band combine harmonicas, guitars, and drum machines with turntables, sampling, and banjos to create a hiphop show unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Kicking off in Whistler for the start of this year’s Crankworx festival, the band will be travelling as a three-piece again as guitar player Jeff Waters is back from back surgery and on the road again. Animal Nation will also be travelling with Saskatoon band Sly Business, fronted
by guitar player/singer/ MC/amazing guy Mark Ejack. In September, the band is set to play two shows at the Western Canadian Music Awards in Regina (Breakout West Fest) to go with their WCMA nomination for best hip-hop album. Previous accolades include the 2010 Olympics, Pemberton Festival, multiple Telus ski and snowboard festivals, Parliament Hill on Canada Day. Animal Nation is Steige

“Tall Man Turner and Mike “Armadillo Slim Armitage and, it formed in 2004 after a heated argument between the two not-then members over the quality of another band’s performance. “The members of Animal Nation are hesitant to call their music ‘hip-hop’ because a lot of hip-hop sucks, said the band’s press information. “The members of Animal Nation think this is unfortunate because they really, really love good hip-hop, but
know that the general population thinks that hip-hop sucks as well. “Animal Nation is the greatest band you will ever hear. After listening to Animal Nation it will henceforth be impossible to appreciate any other sort of music that is not Animal Nation. Tickets from Animal Nation’s concert are $10 in advance at Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books, or $12 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show starts at 8.
