Greens naming local candidate

Luanne Armstrong is well known for her poetry and non-fiction but nearly half of her published books have been aimed at the young reader fiction market. In I’ll Be Home Soon, Armstrong chronicles the harrowing story of Regan, a 13-year-old who lives with her mom in Vancouver’s downtown eastside. When mom doesn’t return from a promised two- or three-day absence, Regan is left to fend for herself and, eventually to unravel the mystery of her disappearance. In the two opening paragraphs of I’ll Be Home Soon, Armstrong lures both young and adult readers into Regan’s gritty world: “Regan checked the street behind her to make sure no one was looking at her. She ran into the alley, stopped at the fallen gate, picked her way through a backyard littered with bags of trash, twisted pieces of bicycles, rusty grocery carts and broken glass. Blackberry vines and white-flowered morning glory were slowly eating it all up. “She climbed through a broken window into the abandoned house, picked her way past the lumps of human waste on the old wooden floor, up a broken staircase and out another window. Then she squatted on the roof the porch, in the shadows, just under the overhang of the roof to watch the street.”

Nelson-Creston constituents will learn who the next Green Party provincial election candidate is on Aug. 19 when the constituency association holds its annual general meeting in Nelson. Green Party organizers are banking on federal leader Elizabeth May’s strong showing in Ottawa will translate into party support at the provincial level when voters go to the polls in May 2013. “Greens finished third in this riding in the 2009 election, with 7.2 percent of the vote, and we hope our candidate can win over the many voters who did not vote in the last election when turnout fell to 60 per cent,” said riding executive member Mary Rathbone. ”Colleen McCrory was able to capture a record 21.5 per cent of the vote for the Greens in the 2001 election, when 75 per cent of registered voters came out to the polls.” The meeting will also feature speakers on two of the hottest environmental topics in the province — the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort.

teacher Ian Cunliffe won’t be taking any time off. On Aug. 8, Cunliffe will begin in Sparwood to run and walk over 1,100 kilometres across B.C., and will run from Yahk to the top of the Kootenay Pass on Aug. 12/13. An attempt of a marathon a day for 22 days will draw public attention to the decade of cuts to B.C. public education by the Liberal government. In his six years of teaching, Cunliffe has witnessed the erosion of funding to B.C. schools and the impact these cuts are having on students. With an education funding shortfall once more projected for 2013, he feels that he can no longer remain silent and has decided to take a stand. “For years now we have been asked to do more with less,” he

said. “We’ve reached the point where the average teacher is spending over $1,000 of their own takehome pay trying to bridge the funding shortfall in order to meet the needs of their students. “It’s time for people to demand that government commit to adequately funding our public school system to ensure every student has an equal opportunity to succeed.” Cunliffe is a primary school teacher and teacher-librarian with the North Vancouver school district. He is a parent of two young children and has completed several ultramarathons, including the world’s toughest race, the Marathon Des Sables (a 240-kilometre race across the Sahara Desert). Brewmaster keeps Kokanee, Bud, Keith’s on tap

Scott Stokes was on track to become a medical student at Thompson Rivers University when another line of work began brewing in his mind. The biology major had a summer co-op job at Columbia Brewery and began thinking that a career in brewing might not be a bad idea. “I began to wonder if I really wanted to go to school for another four years after I got my degree,” he says. He earned his science degree in 2002 and went to work for a microbrewery in Kamloops, only an hour’s drive from his hometown of Sorrento. “I learned a lot about brewing in that job,” Stokes says. “And also that making beer by hand is a lot of hard work. Shoveling hot mash on a hot summer day isn’t fun.” When a position to work under thenbrewmaster Graham Kendall at Columbia Brewing came up in 2004 he jumped at the opportunity and began working his way up the ranks. Three years later, he accepted a transfer to work as Kendall’s assistant in Halifax’s Alexander Keith’s brewery, one of six Labatt breweries in Canada. “We (he and his wife, Leanne) had sold our house and were 36 hours from flying to Halifax to look for a house when I was asked to become the brewmaster here,” he recalls. He and Leanne scrambled to find accommodation in what was then a hot housing market and were lucky to get a house on Scott Street that wasn’t listed. “Becoming a brewmaster was my goal, anyway, so I was happy to stay here,” he says. During his years in Creston, Stokes has earned a brewmaster’s diploma by taking

courses, many by correspondence, and on the job training. “It’s worked out pretty well,” he smiles. “Nobody ever told me when I was young that you could earn a good living making beer. But now, with craft breweries popping up all over, there are more and more people doing just that.” Stokes is part of a small community of brewmasters in large Canadian breweries, so it still isn’t seen as a viable career by many. “There aren’t a lot of technically skilled people available,” he reflects, “so there aren’t a lot of aspiring brewmasters in line for my job.” In a job that he describes as “50 per cent science and 50 per cent taste,” Stokes shoulders large responsibilities and is on call 24/7 if anything goes wrong in the brewing process. And, with Columbia Brewery producing 15 different kinds of beer (Kokanee, Kokanee Gold, Kokanee Light, Keith’s IPA, Keith’s Red Amber Ale, Bud Light, Busch, Lucky, Wildcat Strong, Winchester Draught, Labatt Blue, Labatt Lite, Labatt Genuine, Kootenay True Ale and Brava), there is plenty that can go wrong. Each of the beers has its own distinct recipe and each recipe has to be adjusted according to the size of batch that is being made. “There are about seventeen different batches going in the brewhouse, nine in fermenting tanks and as many as seventeen more in the filter room — there’s always something to tweak.”

While the recipe is key, it’s the manual tweaks — minor adjustments to ingredient measurements or a host of other variables — that keep each beer’s flavour consistent. Two years ago, Stokes took on a huge challenge when Creston was designated to be the first ever brewery outside of Halifax to brew Alexander Keith’s beer. Logistics — transporting ingredients and packaging, and shipping the finished product to market — are incredibly expensive in the brewing business and it’s much more cost-effective to have beer made in two or more breweries than to make it in a single location. “That was a really good learning experience for me,” he says. “It was challenging and we were under very high pressure to meet the standards — it has to taste exactly the same as the ones made in Halifax. And we had orders coming in before we were actually ready to go.” “I learned to question assumptions.” Malt and other ingredients can be slightly different than the ones used in Halifax and the difference in water and even elevation — “boiling at 600 metres compared to sea level makes a difference” — mean that the recipe can vary significantly in each location and matching the taste is largely a matter of trial and error for the first while. While Stokes and other managers and lab workers constantly monitor each brew for taste, the ultimate arbiter is a tasting panel in the Anheuser-Busch

brewery in St. Louis, which gets samples weekly. “I hate when we don’t get a good report,” he smiles. Stokes and the Columbia Brewery management team have been working recently to add yet another label to the mix. They are hoping to get approval from corporate headquarters to begin making the necessary capital improvements to produce Budweiser, one of the most popular beers in the U.S. Its recipe includes up to 30 per cent rice in addition to hops and barley malt and its brewing time is about four times longer than other Columbia Brewery products, so Stokes could soon have another steep learning curve ahead of him. Somehow, that planning has continued through the brewery’s busiest months. “We are stressed to the max from April through July,” he says. “We’re running full bore 24/7, trying to get every last can of beer out that we can. It’s always tough in the summertime; it feels like it’s never going to end. But that’s just the way it is.” With Labatt breweries being part of the giant Anheuser-Busch InBev global conglomerate, Creston’s operation is something of an anomaly, a small-town brewery in a big city business. But Columbia Brewery has a strong reputation for efficiency and good labour relations. It’s also extremely productive. At peak production, the brewery rolls out up to 1.5 million cans of beer a day, in addition to 225,000 bottles a shift, plus kegs. And it doesn’t happen by magic. “People at this brewery always find a way to make something happen. We always come together to find a way. This might not be a logical place to have a brewery, but it does what it does extremely well, so in that way it makes sense. And the water here is really good.” Stokes seems surprised when he realizes that with only eight-and-a-half years in Creston, he is one of the longest serving managers. “Now that I think about,” he says, shaking his head, “the time has gone by in a flash. I could count the days that have dragged by on one hand. Usually when I look at the clock and see it’s 5 p.m. I wonder where the time went. “There’s always something to keep you busy. With all this equipment there is trouble-shooting or maintenance or fullblown rebuilds. And we have a lot of equipment. … “We have a great team here, and that includes all of our 140 or so employees. It’s fun to come to work. And part of my job involves drinking beer. What more could you want?”

Creston RCMP responded to a year-high 137 calls from July 30-Aug. 5, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Tuesday. July 30 â&#x20AC;˘When patrolling police stopped a car on Canyon Street they found the driver, already subject to a court condition to abstain from alcohol, to be in possession of both alcohol and marijuana. He was arrested and held in custody pending a court date. â&#x20AC;˘A 36th Avenue North resident reported that the driver of a silver-grey minivan stopped to photograph the residence. The vehicle was gone when police arrived. â&#x20AC;˘A truck sustained more than $1,000 in damage in a collision with a bear on Highway 3. â&#x20AC;˘A Meadow Wood Road resident in Kitchener complained about the receipt of unwanted emails. â&#x20AC;˘When police responded to a complaint about a dog left in a car on Cook Street, the animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s owner said the dog was just fine. â&#x20AC;˘A female reported her purse was stolen from her vehicle on Canyon Street. She called a short time after to report that she had found the purse in a ditch nearby, missing a passport. â&#x20AC;˘Police were called to a 23rd Avenue South residence, where a male refused entry to his wife and her stepdaughter because they were intoxicated. The females were taken to police cells to sleep.

He was sitting in a car in Centennial Park. August 3 â&#x20AC;˘An intoxicated male found passed out on Alder Street was found to be in possession of marijuana. He was arrested and held overnight in police cells, the marijuana was confiscated and he left with a ticket for being drunk in public. â&#x20AC;˘A resident complained about a person sitting on a stump at the edge of Goat River. Shingles Shingles is the common name given to a viral rash caused by the varicella zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After causing the outbreak of chickenpox, the varicella virus becomes inactive and remains in certain nerves in the body. Shingles occurs after the virus becomes active again – often many years later. The reason that the virus reactivates is unclear but it is thought to be due in part to lowered immunity. Shingles can occur anywhere on the body, but it most often presents as a line of blisters wrapping around the body from the spine to the ribs. The appearance of the rash is often preceded by pain or burning. The eruption of ﬂuid ﬁlled blisters then occurs. These blisters may break open and crust over and often are accompanied by itching. Some sufferers also experience fever or chills, achiness, headache and fatigue. A person who has shingles can pass the virus on to individuals who have not had chickenpox (such as newborns). There are several factors that increase the chance of contracting shingles. Shingles occurs most

frequently in those over ﬁfty years old. The presence of other diseases such as HIV also increases the risk. Medications such as chemotherapy drugs and anti-rejection drugs also enhance the risk of developing shingles. There is no cure available for shingles. There are prescription antivirals which can both decrease the length of the attack and reduce complications. Painkillers such as codeine and other medications such as gabapentin may reduce pain and discomfort. Recently a vaccine (Zostavax) has been introduced to prevent shingles. Zostavax is most effective in people aged 60-69 and reduces the occurrence of shingles by half. The most common complication that is caused by shingles is post herpetic neuralgia (PHN). PHN is the result of damage to the nerves caused by the virus. This damage causes the nerves to send exaggerated message of pain to the brain. Shingles is a relatively common afﬂiction for which there is no cure. While there are medications to treat it, the use of a vaccine to prevent it supports the adage about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;A federal law enforcement official said investigators knew where at least two of the guns had been purchased, and suggested that they were bought recently, but would not say where or precisely when. Another law enforcement official said that information investigators had obtained about the purchase of the AR-15 rifle indicates that it was bought locally and apparently legally, as were the other guns, adding, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing nefarious there,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; from a New York Times article about the Batman movie killer. I posted that quote on my personal Facebook page a couple of weeks ago, adding the comment, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The dead and wounded will be relieved to know the guns were all purchased legally. He followed the rules to become a mass murderer exactly as they are laid out in American law.â&#x20AC;? On Monday, the day this column was written, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, an American organization, was quoted in the Huffington Post: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The gunman in Oak Creek, 40 year-old neo-Nazi Wade Michael Page, had much in common with other recent mass shooters. He used a semiautomatic firearm with highcapacity ammunition magazines. And he was able to purchase his guns and ammo legally despite a personal history replete with red flags. Page was an army veteran who had been discharged under less than honorable conditions. He had a criminal history. Most importantly, Page had been publicly involved in the White Power movement since 2000. He was known to both federal law enforcement authorities and also anti-hate watch groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center. And

this is just what we know after a few hours. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This country deserves a firearm policy that prevents military-style hardware from falling into the

It is easy to think of meditation and Zen training as just a mental exercise. Even on Facebook they advertise that you can meditate like a Zen monk in one minute and get a clear, sharp mind. But according to slogan 47, true spiritual practice engages our whole being: our body, our speech and our mind. The idea is to practice so that our whole being is thoroughly and completely permeated with our spiritual values, and not, in any way, separate from what we do, say and think in daily life. Wholehearted practice shows in the body. It shows in how you handle yourself physically and in how you relate to even the most ordinary objects in your life. A Zen teacher can see the depth of your practice in each movement. So working with the body is a very powerful way to sustain practice. Body practice is not about forcing your body into shape as if you were working out, doing yoga or going on a diet. No matter what condition your body is in, you

can still contact the world with gentleness, awareness and openness. When you practice wholeheartedly, it also shows in your speech and emotions. Instead of speaking impulsively,

we speak simply, directly and with the conscious intention of injecting loving-kindness and gentleness into every situation. In the phrase, â&#x20AC;&#x153;body, speech and mind,â&#x20AC;? speech refers not only to talking and expression, but to the world of emotions, as well. When hot emotions arise, meditation and Zen training help us find a small time and space when and where we can calm down before we speak or act. In this way, our actions, our words and our thoughts are not driven by

ingrained emotional habits. Whole-hearted Zen training also shows in your thinking patterns. Meditation and mindfulness training is nothing other than noticing from moment to moment exactly how your mind works. What do you do inside your head? What do you think about most often? Are you in the past a lot of the time? The future? Busy with problem solving? Or are you engaged in figuring out a way to add more sensual pleasure to your life? Each person has a different tendency. Meditation and mindfulness practice affords an opportunity to know our habits of mind and let them go. This is the secret of creativity. Applying the practices of meditation and mindfulness to the activities of mind will eventually reverse the habits of preoccupation and self-absorption that take up so much mental energy. Canadians must learn from history

To the Editor: Thank you, Pat Martin (“Canada Not Part of the U.S.A.”, July 19 Advance) and all the Canada Day protestors, for getting a message to MP David Willks about Bill C-38. On Canada Day, I had a chance to discuss Bill C-38 with him and express my opinion. Of course, Bill C-38 is about so much more than our sovereignty. By using allocations to limit debate, the Harper Conservatives again showed their contempt of Parliament. Bill C-38 eviscerates many of Canada’s historic environmental laws so that unrestrained economic development at the expense of environmental protection can take place. Some cabinet ministers have called anybody who stands up to protect the Earth and wants a livable future for our children “radicals” and “extremists”. The Harper Conservatives are at war with Canadians who want to protect our resources for future generations. It was very appropriate for Pat and the Canada Day protestors to carry a banner stating Albert Einstein’s wisdom, “The world is a dangerous place to live because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” Wilks spoke up against Bill C-38 but in the end did not have the courage to vote against it. Einstein was well aware of what would happen to his country, Germany, and also Europe and how dangerous it would become because of the people who didn’t do anything about it. Have we learned from history? We Canadians still have a chance to do something about it. Henry Dahle Creston

Science is a way to gain knowledge

To the Editor: The sole purpose of this letter — and there is no political agenda here — is simply to let those with the holierthan-thou view on life not get away with their inept thinking, or, more likely, their lack of it. After all, they do have all the answers. As a former science teacher for more than a few decades, I find the statements made by the person who wrote the letter “Scientific Knowledge not Needed” (July 26 Advance, page 7) totally reprehensible and ignorant to the core. I doubt that this person would be able to utter such tripe at his age, as without scientific endeavours, he would have been long dead. Human lifespans have almost tripled since the time of the Bible as a direct result of

scientific questioning. Unthinking acceptance of religious dogma and the like has allowed more suffering, death, abuse, misery and skullduggery than any other human endeavour (take a good look at the history of mankind). Without a fault, it has been the exploitation of fear and guilt to manipulate and control. It is largely responsible for our cavalier treatment of the Earth — after all, the Bible states that all the wild things were put here for our use and exploitation. I just find these sorts of statements so disappointing when they are accepted as truth. I know I garner the wrath of the denizens of the “Christian Valley”, but I am tired, time and again, of having to listen to this constant barrage of propaganda. There are many ways of looking at our world and gaining knowledge from it. Science is a very powerful way of doing so, but I have come to learn that there are many other ways of looking at the world and getting information from it. Real story of rescue at Goat River To the Editor: (Re: “Ontario man rescued from Goat River,” July 19 Advance, page 4) The last paragraph totally surprised me and made me chuckle because I think it refers to me: “The rescue was made more challenging when two males at the scene confronted police officers, challenging them to fight and refusing to leave the site when requested. The males did not want the rescuers on the property, Gollan said. The pair could face obstruction charges.” My father always said, “There are two sides to every coin,” when he read or watched a news item in the media. So I want to tell you the other side of the coin. I bet if we really had “confronted police, challenging them to fight”, I would be writing this response from behind bars. If having an RCMP officer screaming at you from such a considerable distance that we couldn’t tell who he was yelling at, as there were numerous parties around, some on the car bridge, the railroad bridge and the other side of the river, and using the F-bomb every second word, then I guess this can be construed as “refusing to leave the site when requested”. This was all taking place in my backyard, 30 yards from my back door. I had just come home to find RCMP vehicles had blocked off the Goat River bridge and the RCMP officers in my driveway. Is it out of line to ask someone in charge and expect to have an innocent question answered when in your own backyard? To be met by an excited pair of officers, one of which was threatening arrests and charges, totally blew us away.

Creston Search and Rescue has asked me personally to use my property at the riverbank to practice its rappelling skills and river rescue techniques for the last four years. It annually cleans out debris from the river below the bridges, where kids throw old bikes to TVs to a fridge, a commendable and awesome job to which they don’t get enough credit. A closer look at the art of imagination

I am a perfectionist. Much as it has benefits, it also has its drawbacks. I also have quite an imagination but not of the creative kind. I paint what I see, not what I imagine. This summer, I have been giving free demos and workshops during my days

It is the vision someone has of the future that pushes them to go beyond the limits of ordinary thinking; an idea that they can’t let go of — a dream they want to turn into reality. They imagine the possibilities and set about making it come into existence. I believe that is how we have arrived at the place we find ourselves now as a species. The telephone, the light bulb, indoor plumbing, space exploration, flight and art are all a by-product of someone’s imagination. When man first began making his mark on the world, he only recreated what he saw; our capacity for imagining what could be, had not been developed yet. We only thought about what was. As we began to be able to think “What if?”, we began to use the strength or power of imagination to create all manner of things for the advancement and enhancement of ourselves and our lives. The world around us has become what it is today because of the imagination that turned dreams, wishes and ideas into reality. Where would we be really without the imagina-

Sure, non-fiction can be interesting and exciting (as a student of anthropology and history, I can attest to that), but the imagination of some becomes the enjoyment and escapism of others. I love Ray Bradbury, Stephen King and Robert Ludlum, to name a few. Their imaginations have given me hours of enjoyment, changed the way I think about some things and made me sleep with the lights on (just last month). How dull life would be without imagination — all of us thinking the same, doing the same, being the same. In T.H. White’s The Once and Future King, we would be like the ants that Arthur spends some time with, just mindlessly going through the day, with no wants or desires as we’d have no imagination to fuel them. Maybe that’s what really separates us from “animals”. When I first started to paint with my granddaughter, Betty, we had endless arguments about what was being painted. I’d tell her, “You can’t use that colour!” and she would ask, “Why?” I’d tell her it wasn’t supposed to be that colour and she would ask, “Why?” To my surprise, I really had no answer for that question

Homeowner assistance is only available for a principal residence. Seasonal properties and secondary homes are not eligible. except, “That’s just the way it’s supposed to be.” Strangely enough, that did not satisfy her four-year-old mind and she began an endless litany of, “I can make it whatever I want.” Can you imagine that? I was telling this story to my son and he said, “Mom, she’s just using her imagination. What’s wrong with that?” I realized then that even as an artist (save the medium I paint on, which is stone) I was stuck in a box that limited me and suppressed my imagination. I have been struggling to change that ever since. The art of imagination is no small thing. It has become the focus for me personally in the hope that the more I’m willing to let go of what should be and consider what could be, the more I’ll be able to grow as an artist and as a person. Tomorrow, I’m giving a free workshop at the chamber of commerce from 1-2:30 p.m. on having fun with watercolours for kids as well as adults. There is room for 10 people, and all the materials are supplied. Albert Einstein once said, “Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions.” If that’s the case, I’m looking forward to the main feature. Lori Wikdahl is a Creston Valley artist.

Arguably, one of most important components of any society is a well functioning family: mom, dad, a couple of kids, decent morals, clear rules, communication, love, understand-

I was on both sides of the aisle and observed plenty of both throughout my life. What do you do if you are in a less-thanperfect situation? Start where you are. Dream, desire, change, work on it. No matter how young or old you are, whether you are a kid, mom, dad or grandpa/grandma, make it work. Remember, many of us make better grandparents than parents just because by the time we “arrived” as parents, our kids were on their own already. You cannot change the past but surely you can do something about the future. A last bit of an advice: Love no matter what, and be there for the others.
