ou can call Port Alberni’s Dyan Lover brassy, a redneck, a Creeker, or a gearhead and she’ll likely respond by smiling, then whipping you on the race track. The Alberni Valley’s first lady of drag racing is one of 280 drivers competing in Thunder in the Valley 2012, which is being held at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport on Aug. 11-12. Dyan isn’t the only member of the Lover family competing in the venerable race. Her partner Ron York is competing, as well as her brother John and sister Sharon. Her brother-in-law John West (married to sister Wendy) is also racing and her brother Ray competes in 4x4 racing. “It’s in the blood. I influenced my brothers to race when we were younger. What can I say?” she said. Thunder has a special significance for another reason. “I introduced my sister Sharon to Brent Harris at Thunder in the Valley two years ago and they’re married now,” she said. Harris competes in Thunder and is racing again this year. Dyan made it to the semi-finals in the pro class in 2011 before being beat by Port Alberni racer Gerald Levasseur and his 1968 Camaro Z28. Dyan worked as a volunteer with Thunder in the Valley since the race’s inception. She spent seven years with a

broom tending to the burnout box – the dirtiest job in the event but it has to be done. “I did it to be close to the cars,” she said. “I thought ‘this is what I was meant to do’. Cars are my drug of choice.” Being outdoors and involved with cars comes naturally to Lover, and she chalks it up to her roots, which she’s proud of. “I’m a Creeker. I love being outside and I

can’t stand being in the house,” she said. Two things stand out as important to Lover after listening to her: family and racing. The racing die was cast long before there was a Thunder in the Valley. The mother of one son (Lance) was born the second eldest of six children and was raised in Beaver Creek. Lover attended

Gill School, Beaver Creek Elementary and AW Neill before graduating from ADSS in 1978. She wanted to be a mechanic in school and was the first female to take mainstream auto tech courses in Grades 11-12. Her first race experience, she says, was at age 14. “The police chased John West and I down Beaver Creek Road

because John had his headers off,” she said. The pair were caught but not charged as they stopped in time to re-attach the headers. She realized her ambition of becoming a mechanic and worked on cars for a time but later gave it up. “I realized that I wouldn’t be working on race cars all the time so I lost interest.”

She managed a camera store and worked in a beer and wine store before becoming a school bus driver five years ago. Lover used to race off-track as well, finding an outlet for her restless spirit. She considered herself fearless to a fault, she says, feeling that if you have a car with speed then that’s what you use it for. An experience two years ago, however, made her think. She momentarily lost control of her car at another race and saw a wall fast approaching in her headlights. “I had a fire suit on but that moment scared the crap out of me,” she said. The experience tempered Lover and gave her a new mindset.

“It’s maturity. I don’t want to lose a pile of points off my license and I have a responsibility with my job now,” she says. Lover is one of a handful of women who compete as racers in a male-dominated world. “I hear chauvinistic remarks from men and I expect it — it’s their world,” she says. “But I’m also able to help promote the sport because as a woman I get more attention.” Woman or not, Lover says she can hold her own. “I’ve got an opinion and I’m not afraid of voicing it. I don’t keep my mouth shut,” she said. Lover drives a 1969 Camaro Z28 that is powered by a 540-cubic-inch Merlin engine. The parts have something akin to a best-before date and she has to change them out every two years. She estimates she’s invested $130,000 in the car and plans on modifying it later this year to compete in the more powerful door slammer racing class. In addition to racing in Thunder, Lover also races in NHRA events in Mission along with several other racers from Port Alberni, as well as in Ashcroft. She’s also been to events in Edmonton, Las Vegas, Bakersfield, Cal., and New Jersey. “Thunder doesn’t have the resources that other events do, but they put on a good event and no one works harder than the volunteers,” she said. “Racing is my passion. It keeps me smiling.”

Smouldering embers in the dust collection system at Somass Mill prompted two mutual aid fire department callouts in three days. Friday morning crews from Port Alberni, Beaver Creek and Sproat Lake responded to a 911 call from the Western Forest Productsowned mill. “Mill staff told us there were embers in the system that is located around what they call the head rig,” fire Chief Tim Pley said. Pley described the apparatus as a pipe that runs through the

It was a busy B.C. Day holiday weekend for Port Alberni RCMP. Police answered a total of 91 calls over the weekend, RCMP Sgt. Dave Paddock said. Police responded to 27 calls on Friday and to 32 calls on Saturday. They responded to 22 calls on Sunday. “Most of the calls were for disturbances and two were for MVAs,” Paddock said. One MVA on Aug. 4 involved a car that flipped on the Bamfield Main Road and resulted in only minor injuries. On Aug. 3, police responded to calls of a car stopped in the middle of the grey bridge on River Road. Police found the car and driver a short distance away. “The driver showed signs of impairment and blew a warning sign on the breathalyzer,” Paddock said. “The car was impounded and license was subsequently suspended for three days. In another matter, police responded to an accident involving a car and motorcycle on the evening of Aug. 2. The motorcyclist was injured in the accident and was taken to hospital with no life threatening injuries. “The investigation is ongoing and we’re looking into whether or not alcohol was involved,” Paddock said. “You could definitely say that it was a pretty steady weekend.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Vandals put waterbomber at risk WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON

Alberni Valley News

An act of vandalism on the Hawaii Mars water bomber had near tragic consequences after a flight crew took off without noticing the damage on the weekend. According to Coulson Group of Companies owner Wayne Coulson, the incident happened late Saturday night as the aircraft was moored in front of the flying tanker base at Sproat Lake. The vandalism caused $25,000 worth of damage. “Some people climbed up on the fuselage and walked along the wing then tried to walk to the tail,” Coulson said. “They got onto the rear horizontal stabilizer and their foot went through the skin fabric.” A neighbour who lives near the base reported the incident to Coulson personnel who rushed to the base, but the people had already left. The base is equipped with a security camera but it was too dark to make

pulled their foot back through the hole the skin was pulled back into place,” Coulson said. The tanker flew enroute to Bowen but were stood down after the fire was brought under control. The crew noticed the

The incident involving someone climbing onto the tanker is the second in six weeks, something that disappoints Coulson. “We’ve brought it all over the US and to Mexico and it’s never been vandalized.” The base now has round-theclock security and

If the flight had gone longer or the tanker scooped its payload of 27,200 litres of water the incident could have been tragic, Coulson said. “They (pilots) would have lost control of the plane and if they had water then it would have been really bad,” he said. “The torque per square inch when it has a load is incredible.” It wasn’t just the plane’s crew that was put at risk. The aircraft was grounded on the hottest day of summer and could not respond if a local fire broke out, Coulson

Party for Port to be proud of Pipeline posturing doesn’t help issue Well done, Port Alberni. After nearly two years of planning, Port Alberni’s centennial homecoming celebration had the city buzzing for four days, and the full streets and sidewalks hearkening back to more prosperous times. While the heat kept some away from Bob Dailey Stadium on Sunday, it wasn’t enough to deter people from honouring our city’s 100 years of history. Kudos must go out to the centennial committee and its legion of volunteers for pulling off such an ambitious event: with activities spread from Harbour Quay and South Port to the visitors’ centre, the stadium to McLean Mill. And all the while keeping the heritage aspect at the forefront while finding relevant activities for all. Whether the festivities made money or not is irrelevant: our community cast off the doom-and-gloom attitude and showed its pride. While homecoming is put to bed and centennial celebrations take a bit of a breather before gearing up to Alberni’s centennial in January, we get a chance to party all over again this weekend. Thunder in the Valley promises to draw thousands of drag racing and car enthusiasts to our region for the twoday event at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport. Harbour Quay will once again play host to the Valley Street Rods’ car show on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. We have yet another chance to showcase our community to visitors and residents alike, and prove to them what we are truly capable of.

ICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal government is taking its new hardline approach to federal environmental hearings on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal in September. Environment Minister Terry Lake has filed the B.C. government’s notice to cross-examine Enbridge, one of the world’s biggest pipeline operators. Lake outlined the “tough questions” B.C. representatives will ask about spill response capacity on land and sea, tanker escort tugboats, pipe wall thickness, and Enbridge’s sluggish response to a pipeline rupture in Michigan. That’s all fine, and to be expected after Premier Christy Clark’s highprofile confrontation with Alberta Premier Alison Redford going into the recent premiers’ meeting

in Halifax. Clark’s demands for “world-leading” safety and spill response, as well as meeting the constitutional obligation to consult and accommodate aboriginal groups along the route, are mostly a statement of the obvious. Her call for a “fair share” of proceeds from exported oil to reflect B.C.’s risk has been assaulted from all sides. Pipeline opponents seized on Clark’s suggestion that a major oil spill might be tolerable if there was enough money in it for B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix picked up the theme as he conducted his own belated tour of the proposed route to reiterate his opposition. There had been earlier hints from Alberta that B.C. might need further rewards for the risk. But when Clark made the “fair share” demand public, Redford was moved to channel Margaret

Thatcher, declaring: “The Premier of Alberta is not going to blink on royalties.” The lady’s not for blinking, but neither is B.C.’s Iron Snowbird, as Preston Manning dubbed Clark this spring. All this political theatre doesn’t amount to much. I’ll stand by my January prediction that the Enbridge proposal is unlikely to proceed, mainly due to the tangled state of aboriginal claims. Wealthy U.S. foundations that view the B.C. North Coast as their 500-year eco-experiment will be happy to help fund a decade of legal challenges, while continuing the media-spinning and protest support they are doing now. Even if some way can be found to levy a B.C. tax on revenues from the Northern Gateway pipeline, it’s no solution. For one thing, it would confer an advantage to the

Trans-Mountain pipeline that has been shipping Alberta oil to Burnaby and the U.S. for more than 60 years. The competing expansion proposal by Trans-Mountain’s current owner, Kinder Morgan, shows the inconsistency of opposition to pipelines. Does anyone really believe that a new pipeline built to the highest standards ever would be too dangerous, while a 60-year-old pipeline is acceptable? Protesters have an easy target in Kinder Morgan. With a tenfold increase to 25 tankers a month proposed to sail under the Lions Gate bridge, a heavy oil spill from Second Narrows to Stanley Park would be catastrophic to Vancouver’s environment and economy. Tankers have made that trip safely nearly 100 years, but the congested modern shipping lane offers more threat of collision, and clearing Burrard Inlet for neardaily tanker transits would disrupt the rest of B.C.’s shipping trade. Public, politicians differ on pipeline

From / 8 An Angus Reid poll last week showed as many as half of respondents remain open-minded about the costs and benefits of new oil pipelines across B.C. Unlike B.C. politicians, they seem interested in learning more before making up their minds. Dix and the NDP ran to the front of the anti-pipeline parade early, as they did with

the carbon tax and other issues. Clark began the Northern Gateway discussion with a principled position to wait for the result of the federal review, but that’s apparently out the window with an election looming. To the Editor, Re: Waterbomber vandalized; Coulson offers $5,000 reward, www. albernivalleynews. com. The people who damaged the Hawaii Mars not only vandalized an irreplaceable piece of aviation history, they also put the lives of others at risk. Those who depend upon the waterbomber to protect their property and their lives, were temporarily left defenceless. Port Alberni is a small town, therefore word will quickly spread as to who did the damage. The culprits are obviously not smart enough to refrain from bragging about their exploits, so someone will know what they did and will report them to the police. They will be caught and they will pay for their stupidity. George Clarke, Maple Ridge

To the Editor, The reddish glow emanating from Mars has excited our imaginations ever since man first gazed thoughtfully up at the night sky. The people at NASA have performed another mind-boggling task: landing a complex package of scientific instruments on a distant planet. Just imagine if some benevolently intelligent extraterrestrial witnessed Curiosity, the aptly named mobile laboratory, landing on Mars. What lofty expectations the

If Justin Bieber received the same kind of whitewashed education about Canada’s First Nations Peoples like my generation did growing up in Canada during the 1950s and ’60s, then perhaps he’s to be forgiven for recently mis-speaking about Canadian aboriginal heritage providing privileged access to free gas. When I hear tripe such as “we’d all be better off if they (First Nations) all stayed on-reserve” and the equally as ignorant “they should just get over it like all the conquered

tribes of Europe did,” however, I believe such dark smallmindedness just needs the enlightenment of a little education. So I’d like to strongly encourage every Canadian, including ‘the Beebs’, to view the four-part CBC documentary series called Eighth Fire: Aboriginal Peoples, Canada and the Way Forward. T’would be nice to see it shown in schools across the land. At the very least, it educates the viewer about all the taxes First Nations do pay and puts to rest uninformed prejudices about exemptions. Mostly, as its promo suggests, the series “explores ways to repair the relationship between Canadians and First Nations and offers us all a way forward and a second chance at getting the relationship right”. EI changes good for people To the Editor, Re: EI reform bad labour strategy, Letters, June 14. I announced improvements to the Employment

Insurance Program (EI) to ensure that it remains fair, flexible and supports Canadians as they look for work. These changes are reasonable, commonsense efforts to help Canadians get back to work faster. Following much fear-mongering from the Opposition, however, let me be frank. These changes are not about forcing people to move. Nor are they about attacking certain industries or regions of the country. We will not require that Canadians take jobs for which they are not suited or which are unreasonable based on their personal circumstances. We will, however, help Canadians become more aware of the job opportunities that may exist in their local area, and increase the support that we offer to help them get back to work faster. EI is a temporary income support, and the legal requirements already exist for people to actively look for work while on claim. Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources & Skills Development

QUESTION of the week

www.albernivalleynews.com

They came so early – filing past in one long stream – different people all with one purpose to make it to the place they had heard about. Was this the edge of the Sea of Galilee we read of in Matthew 14 where the crowds had followed Jesus? Were these the people who came to be healed and see for themselves this man they had heard about? This crowd that came last Sunday to the park on the shore, came to worship that same man – all denominations singing and praying in the intense Vancouver Island heat. What a joy – Jesus is always wherever people join together and always where one person speaks his name.

Alberni Valley News

It’s official: Port Alberni is Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Town. And now we have a sign to prove it. The 20 foot high and 14 foot wide red cedar sign was placed at the intersection of Victoria Quay and Johnston Road last Thursday. “I feel so excited — like a mother expecting a baby,” said Carolyn Jasken,

the Alberni Valley’s Ultimate Fishing Town coordinator. The sign is made out of 12 separate pieces and fits together like a puzzle. It is laminated and reinforced with steel to insulate it from the West Coast’s elements. The piece was carved by Ucluelet artist Terry McKinnon, 67. “This was really Carolyn’s vision and words and I put it to wood,” he said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

being held on Stirling Arm at Sproat Lake. Approximately 40 competitors are from Port Alberni, said event spokesperson Mike Doughty. The event starts on Saturday and the finals go on Sunday. Start time on both days is 9 a.m. Admission to the event is free. The event was last held here in 2010.

Wrestlers Euro tour makes stop in alps It was fun and competition for wrestlers from Port Alberni as their European tour made a stop in the Austrian alps. The athletes stayed in the town of Innsbruck. The stay wasn’t all sightseeing as Alberni faced off against athletes from the Wrestling Club of Inzing — a small village outside of

Innsbruck. Athletes were matched according to size and skill and Alberni availed itself well. Strong performances were put in by Jonathan Spencer, Michael Cappus, Cole Walton, Connor McDonald, Katie Taylor and Johannes Kulich. Next up is Liechenstein, Zurich, Paris and London.

Nuu-chah-nulth people are having their own version of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England right here in Port Alberni. Organizers have geared up to host the 2012 Tlu-piich Games in Port Alberni from Aug. 7-12. The games kicked off with canoe races on Tuesday and an opening ceremony at Maht Mahs gym. A grand entrance plus track and field events were held on Wednesday. Participation at the games peaked at 1,000 people in 2011 and this year is expected to increase. “Since the revival of the games in 2009 the participation has increased by 500 each year, this year we are expecting around 1,500,” games coordinator Richard Samuel said. The games are about more than sports and more than medals, said outgoing Nuuchah-Nulth Tribal Council vice president Priscilla SabbasWatts. “The Tlu-piich Games are something that Nuu-chah-nulth of all ages look forward to and hold cherished memories of,” Sabbas-Watts said. The games will feature staple events such as track and field, basketball, volleyball, fast pitch, slow pitch and as well as a cultural events such as Lahal, or bone games. Swimming starts at Echo Pool on Thursday afternoon and softball — both slo and fast pitch — start on Saturday. The games conclude on Sunday after the softball finals.

Hickory hack attack Hollies raises charity cash [more-online

Hollies Golf

The first ever Port Alberni “Hickory Hackers” event came and went with little fanfare probably due more to the extreme heat more than anything else. We were entertained by players who came from all around Vancouver Island

dressed in the times of the hickory shafted golf club. There were long skirts, bow ties, plus fours, mustaches, and even an 89-year-old Howie Meeker, who I am pleased to say, walked the course. While disappointed in our Port Alberni response, the Hollies, never the less

were very grateful to Larry Gavelin and Ralph Bouwman, the former for his enthusiasm, and the latter for spirit. You guys propped up the image of Port Alberni. Preban Rasmussen did not need a wooden shafted club of any sort to take the Jim’s Clothes Closet low gross of the week’s men’s night, recording a one over par 31. That score was two better than his Denis Debolt.

Hollies Ladies Golf

It is so hard to believe that the summer is more than half over. Why it that what happened yesterday seems to be so long ago, but the months go by so quickly? But fortunately there are still lots of golf games left before the summer is over. Maryann McConnell and

Sue Steinhaeur are both tied at the top of the ringer board. Their low scores are virtually unreachable now by the rest of us, but that doesn’t stop us from trying. Lee Anne VanLent won the longest putt of the night, sponsored by Tim Horton’s. KP, sponsored

by Safeway, was won by Marion Dick. Closest to the pin on the second shot, sponsored by Port Pizza, was won by Jean Boyko. A Step Above sponsored the Longest Drive and was won by Geri Shields, who also was the low gross winner in the “B” division. “A” Division low gross winner was Sue Steinhaeur. Ladies night has raised $335 so far towards Ty Watson.

Ladies jockey in division championship playdown championship. The first round was played Tuesday, and the second round will be played on Thursday and will determine the placing for the third round which will be held next Tuesday. The monthly medal was in hot pursuit by players today with Sandra Simpson leading the pack with her low net placing

JOAN THOMPSON

Pitch n’ Putt

18 Hole Division: Well, not really going for gold... but certainly for a prestigious title. Lady golfers of the 18 Hole Division are in the midst of playdowns to determine their division

week. Low gross was shot by Janice Cross who notched up an 84 on her scorecard. Special mention of low gross goes out to Pat Nicklin carding an 87. Nicklin also came in with the low net and the player for low handicaps who had the least amount of putts. Simpson took home a new ball for her efforts of least putts for the high

of 69. Simpson will go on to play in a shootout next July to determine the overall winner for 2012. Gayle Rhodes finally gave up the challenge pin to Marie Randall after hanging on to it for several good game weeks. Due to the division playdowns which are ongoing, it’ll be a “no contest” for the challenge pin next

handicappers. If you are competing in the 18 Hole Division Championship remember to enter your score on the computer as a “T”(tournament) score. On the other hand, if you are entering a game from playing on the “B” or “C” team play your score will not be a “T”(tournament) entry. Sound

confusing?..it is.. so keep your wits about you when you enter those scores. Recently, our teams hosted a competition against Pheasant Glen. Our score of 35 1/2 was one point shy of Pheasant Glen who tallied up 36 1/2 points. Sharon Haggard had an outstanding game on her own,

holding off two of the competition and taking 7 1/2 points as a singleton. Now that’s almost like “going for gold” “C” team will be playing against Arrowsmith on Aug. 24...see Kathy White to get your name into that competition. Coming up very quickly is the Solheim Cup which we will host on Aug. 17.

Life’s a beach with a camera NORMAN SILVERSTONE

Digi-pixels

I

t was so sunny and hot here in town that we couldn’t take it anymore. “Let’s go to the beach,” I said. At that moment I realized that to get to any sandy beach on salt water we would have to travel a distance. Should I use a quarter of a tank or one half tank of gas to get to the beach and return, I thought. Gas is always an issue now. Decision made, off we went to Miracle Beach Provincial Park, somewhere past Courtenay. The walk from the parking lot to the beach was like a shot back in time; we walked through lush vegetation and giant trees, their tops ablaze with the hot sun. If you squinted you could just imagine the area unspoiled, precontact. I was sporting my

Nikon D300s with a Sigma 10-20mm fisheye lens, all ready to be amazed by that incredible lens. As backup for different angles of view I had my 18-70mm lens as well as a 2x teleconverter. I started shooting almost right away, holding onto the dog leash with one hand and the camera with the other so that I could compose the image through the viewfinder. I have to take off my glasses to see through the viewfinder. I have a diopter knob beside my eyepiece that lets me adjust the viewfinder to the strength of my glasses. Les came back from the pit-toilets and took the dog leash so that I could shoot. We walked out of the woods to a view of miles of beach. We were on the very rocky dog beach. Right beside us in plain view is the human beach that is sandy from the grass

to the water. That didn’t stop me; I find photographs everywhere. Checking out the driftwood and logs through the viewfinder, I got sucked right in to the entire image, with seemingly unending depth of field. I wanted to see the depth for myself so I pressed the depth of field button on my camera and closed the lens down until I had everything sharp from the front edge of the image to infinity. This is the combination that I used for the log shot: • File format–RAW • Size of image–20.6 MB • ISO–250 • 10–20mm zoom lens set at 10mm • Aperture–f20 • Shutter speed– 1/160 of a second. Walking through the minefield of stones, rocks, and pebbles we came to the water’s edge and looked in. Nope, no sand. We looked over at the human beach with its sand, kids making

sandcastles and people frolicking in the water. C’est la vie. I got bored with the limitations of the fisheye lens and switched to the 18-70mm lens. Not an easy feat switching lens at any time, especially at a windy, sandy beach. Of course I was very careful to protect the camera and lens in my jacket. Then I took the new lens and placed it on the log bayonet side up, took off the lens cap, pointed my camera to the ground, took off the old lens and quickly snapped the new lens on. After switching lenses I did shoot one incredible shot. Any questions? E-mail me at nsilverstone@ telus.net or see me online at www. silverstonephotos. com.
