Pas Ka Poo Park’s main museum was the target of burglars. They stole just under $2,000 in cash that had been left in the locked building between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m., July 29 to 30; waiting for the Monday morning deposit. “Normally we don’t have that amount of cash,” said park administrator Cheryl Jones. The money was the cash float, proceeds from admissions, donations given to the park and proceeds collected by volunteers at the park’s concession. The museum would have received a Spirit grant from the Alberta government, matching the amount of the donations. The grant won’t be given without a proof of deposit, says Jones. The culprits broke in through one of the museum’s heavy metal doors. Jones says they’re secured now but may have to be replaced. The door is the museum’s emergency exit. It was bent during the burglary and is now hard to open. “It’s for public safety,” said Jones. The museum’s vintage cash register was broken into and damaged. It cannot be replaced. “At least they didn’t damage any of the artifacts,” said Jones. ‘We’re very thankful for that.” Rimbey RCMP investigates with assistance from a forensic identification unit. “We’re examining all evidence and looking into all possible leads,” said Sgt. Mark Groves. Pas Ka Poo has been hit with small-time vandalism such as chairs in the pool, broken flags and alcohol paraphernalia left on the grounds. One month ago one of the park’s memorial trees was broken. “It’s disheartening,” said Jones. However, changes have been made to the museum. Cash is no longer left overnight, nightly deposits are made. “This is a small blemish,” said Jones. “We’ve taken steps.”

Aspiring writer working at Beatty House By Amelia Naismith It was built between the years 1924 and 1925 and since then the Beatty House hasn’t changed much, but every year fresh faces come to work in the house over the summer and teach its history to visitors. This year one of two employees of the house is Brianna Buist, who grew up in Rimbey. “I remember coming to the house when I was very young for something to do with a wedding, I remember teacups . . . and I remember it smelled old,” Buist said. Buist had just finished her first year at the University of Alberta and her mother, who saw the job posting in the newspaper, told Buist about it. Buist is majoring in English with a minor in creative writing, working toward her bachelor of arts degree. There’s a book with a pumpkin on the front Buist wrote when she was six. “Every time I take it out I remember my mom saying, ‘You should be a writer’.” But for now Buist is content at the Beatty House. She’d never been past the front room before this summer and the house had a mysterious quality that drew Buist to it. When she’s working, Buist regales visitors to the house with its history: how it was built for the Beatty family after their old residence and store burnt to the ground. Jack and Violet Beatty lived in the house for the remainder of their lives. Their nephew, Donny, stayed with them during the summers. The Beatty House has received close to 150 visitors this summer and, according to Buist, 20 to 30 per cent have been international guests from places such as India, Italy, Denmark, Holland and the United States. Talking with the international guests in one of Buist’s favorite parts of the job. “People always have something interesting to say.’ Buist also maintains the grounds around the house and helps with displays. Recently she worked on a antique toy display. “That was fun for me.” Recently the house received a box, from Donny’s wife, containing photos and a dress that was Violet Beatty’s. Violet lived in the house almost up until her death 1984. The society that runs the house is still cataloging the contents of the box.

Count down to holidays For every thing there is a season. And now, as summer flourishes and ripens into August, it seems everyone is getting their holiday passports stamped, “gone.” Yes, the holiday season has arrived. It seems everyone in Treena Mielke the world is either on holOn The Other Side idays, going on holidays or just getting back. I noticed on Facebook the other day several messages all related to holidays. Facebookers have poured their weary, workhardened hearts into messages such as, “I’m so ready. And, “If I don’t get to go on holidays soon, I will burst.” I smile, keep my head down and my eyes on the computer keyboard. I tell myself it’s the journey, not the destination that counts. And then, unbidden, the little thought creeps into my head, “Nine days, I have nine days left.” And so I continue doing my reporter-like stuff; writing stories, taking pictures, making phone calls. But, as much as news doesn’t stop, it seems it, too, wants to take a short hiatus or at least an afternoon nap. Sources, the ones whose phone numbers are tattooed on your brain, because they are usually so helpful and so available have turned into nothing more than a recording. “I’m sorry, I am out of the office from now until forever, so have a great day,” says the voice that used to be live. The message is not meant to be mocking, so I try not to take it personally, try not to slam the phone down, and try not to look at the calendar and think, “Eight days, now I have eight days left.” This year, preceding my holidays, I was shuffled over to another newspaper office. It’s all part of being a member of this big newspaper family called Black Press. Apparently, Black Press has lots of siblings and it is our duty to help each other out when one of us is gone on holidays. And so, there I was struggling to leave my office neat, clean and tidy and minus the four coffee cups and stack of old news press releases at The Rimbey Review and shuffle myself over to The Sylvan Lake News. The transition turned out to be fairly easy, except when I tried to identify myself on the phone. Of course, I know exactly who I am, most days anyway, but, no doubt, because of the shuffle I seemed to be a little confused as to whom I work for. “Hi, I’m Treena from The Rimbey Review, I mean The Sylvan Lake News, whatever, I have no idea where I’m from,” I stammer. Unfortunately by the time I get it figured out I will probably be back in Rimbey. Coming to Sylvan Lake, however, has been awesome. It’s kind of like coming home. For 11 years I was part of the news staff here and for part of that time, I was ‘the news staff’. It’s good to be back. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced that little black book I possessed so proudly years ago. It was my book of sources, my reporter’s bible. Names, telephone numbers and even, if my sources were benevolent enough, cellphone numbers. I think I lost it about four offices ago. Anyway, it’s good to be back, if only for a short holiday season. And then I, too, will be one of those people on holidays. Did I mention I only had nine days left? Or is it eight? Editor’s note: Treena now has only four days until her vacation. GAB, editor

The Lions 1 Park will get new swings and a slide from PlayQuest Recreation. Submitted image
Playgrounds updated for safety By Amelia Naismith Three parks in Rimbey are having their playground equipment updated. Some equipment at Lions parks 1 and 2 and at the BMX Park no longer meet safety inspections, according to recreation director Rick Kreklewich. They were inspected as a part of Rimbey’s replacement standards and were no longer compliant with the Canadian standards for playgrounds, says the owner of PlayQuest Recreation, Derek Giesbrecht. PlayQuest is the company contracted to install the new playgrounds. “They’re state of the art,” said Giesbrecht. The new equipment at the BMX Park will be wheelchair accessible as well as accessible for other disabilities such as limited mobility. The BMX Park is PlayQuest’s
largest project of the three parks. It’s being entirely redone. “Its lifetime had expired,” explained Giesbrecht. Kreklewich says the BMX Park equipment was installed in the 1980s. The BMX Park will be surfaced with an engineered wood fibre. The wood fibre is intended to allow wheelchairs to cross it easily but still has the safety of conventional surfaces, Giesbrecht explained. At the BMX Park a saucer swing and conventional swings are also being installed; at the Lions parks new slides and swing sets. Together, the cost of the three parks is $106,000 and they’re expected to be completed by the end of August, depending on the weather. “We just had to do some minor repairs,” said Kreklewich. Other equipment in town parks is fairly new.

Celtic band coming to Rimbey Music lovers in the area will have an opportunity to enjoy a delightful mix of Celtic music from Ireland, Scotland and the Maritimes when the traditional acoustic group Celtara comes to Rimbey Aug. 17. Celtara will present a concert of traditional and contemporary acoustic Celtic music at 7:30 p.m. at the Rimbey Community Centre, Upper Auditorium, 5109 – 54 Street. The band features Bonnie Gregory (fiddle, harp, vocals), Andreas Illig (guitar, Irish bouzouki), Tami Cooper (flute, whistle, vocals), Steven Bell (accordion, piano, vocals) and Mark Arnison (bodhran, world percussion). They’re deep-seated love of music, has proven to be infectious. Celtara has entertained large and small audiences since 2004. Their venues vary and include sold-out shows in soft-seat theatres, intimate settings of house concerts, a VIA train, and Edmonton’s Riverboat Queen. Enthusiastic and appreciative audiences have called their performances joyous, inspiring, toe-tapping and beautiful. The diversity of the group comes, no doubt, from a combination of talents. Gregory, originally a classical violinist, developed her talent for flawless jigs, reels and airs in the band Scona Brae. Guitarist Andy Illig is also from the band Scona Brae and is well known in the Alberta Celtic scene.
Tami Cooper has toured and recorded with David Wilkie’s Cowboy Celtic, and was a founding member of the long-lived Celtic quartet Sheela Na Gigh. Mark Arnison, who also played with Sheela Na Gigh, brings his wonderful percussion talent to the band with traditional, classical and world beat styles. And last, but certainly not least is Steven Bell, a composer/accordionist/pianist with an extensive classical, jazz and pop background. Celtara continues to leave a lasting mark in the Celtic music world and has recently released its second album, More Than One True Love. This album follows their debut recording Until the Morning Light, released in 2007. More Than One True Love placed seventh on CKUA’s top 30 chart the week it was released and Peter North, music journalist and CKUA host, said it is one of the best Celtic acts on the Prairies “It is evident Celtara has become a unit where the members breathe in unison and are on the same page when it comes to navigating the musical journey that is taking place.” Tickets for the Rimbey performance are available at Stationery, Stories and Sounds, 5007 50th Avenue. Phone 403-843-4392.
Traditional Celtic group Celtara is coming to play in Rimbey.

Once again, Penn West Exploration has stepped up for health care in Rimbey, demonstrating their continued commitment to a healthy community with a $25,000 donation in response to a proposal put forth by David Thompson Health Trust. Penn West’s gift has been made in support of the Continuing Care Resident Bus Campaign at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. The new bus will continue to provide opportunities for continuing care residents to stay active and remain connected to the community, ensuring an enhanced quality of life. “It is with deep and heartfelt gratitude that we can say thank you to Penn West for their generous donation to the resident bus campaign,” said Colleen Connolley, site manager of the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. “They recognized the need and responded to the opportunity to positively impact the residents in our continuing care centre. “This donation will assist tremendously with the purchase of the new resident bus that will enable the residents to remain connected to the community they lived in and loved. Their social wellbeing will be enhanced as a result,” Connolley, on behalf of the Rimbey Health Services Donation Committee that worked with David Thompson Health Trust to submit the proposal for this donation. This isn’t the first time Penn West has responded to a need at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. Just eight months ago the company donated $10,000 in support of a portable ultrasound machine for the emergency room; a piece of equipment that is now in operation at the hospital. “Penn West Exploration provides funding to organizations and initiatives that positively contribute to the health and well-being of individuals and communities in which we work,” explained Dean Norstrom, production foreman with Penn West.

Vial of Life saves lives By Amelia Naismith The Vila for Life program is designed to help EMS save lives. Associated Ambulance, Rimbey Value Drug Mart and Stationery Stories and Sounds are sponsoring the program. Vial for Life is an emergency information program that allows emergency personal to better assist people who are
unable to provide their own information in the case of an emergency. “I think it will provide information so we can help them medically,” said Andrea Henderson, operational supervisor for Rimbey. The program provides information sheets for every member of the family that can be filled out with details such as medical history, allergies, and cur-
rent medications and their locations in the home. The information sheets are to be kept in Vial for Life containers that are meant to be stored on the top shelf of a refrigerator door; to keep them in universal location says Henderson. Magnetic stickers are available with program kits that can be kept on a clear place on a refrigerator door.
EMS is trained to look for the stickers for when they need information a person can’t provide. The free program kits are available at Rimbey Drug Mart or by calling Associated Ambulance at 403-843-2998. There is no to pick up the kits because Vial for life is an ongoing program.

Young museum hostess enjoying move to Bentley By June Norvila The Bentley Museum summer hostess this year says likes Bentley for a number of reasons. She moved to Bentley just a year ago and has just completed her Grade 10 at the Bentley school. Kacey Maerz, 16, is halfway through her summer job and loving it. Coming from Edmonton, Kacey says, “I like the time the teachers have to give individual help to students, the people in Bentley are great, you get to know everyone, and there is more freedom (in the small town atmosphere).” She found out about the summer position through her step-mom, she applied, had an interview, and was selected for the position. The job started at the end of June and will run through the September long weekend when she returns to school going into Grade 11. Right now she is working on getting a float for the museum ready to be in the Aug. 9 parade, but has other duties at the museum as well including some lawn maintenance and meeting and greeting visiKacey Maerz, this summer’s Bentley Museum hostess, sits astride a “pony” that will be part of the museum’s parade tors. She has had someone from Arizona who had float she is working on getting together. It is easier to organize this year, what with the extra indoor space offered by family homestead in the Bentley area visit, and finds having the new spacious building. Beating outdoor blues Get Outside: The Kids Guide to Fun in the Great Outdoors by Jane Drake & Ann Love, illustrated by Heather Collins c.2012, Kids Can Press $16.95 / $17.95 Canada 76 pages, includes index Your Mom is awfully tired of you. She’s tired of you running up and down stairs, in and out doors, from kitchen to bedroom. She’s tired of your noise from video games, talky toys, TV shows, and electronics. Most of all, she’s very, very tired of you saying that you’re bored. But it’s true: you’re bored and nothing’s fun. So maybe it’s time to make your own fun, with help from your siblings and friends. Grab Get Outside by Jane Drake & Ann Love, illustrated by Heather Collins, and bring your imagination. Mom says that if you can’t find something to do today, she’ll give you something to do and you don’t want that! But you and your friends have already done everything you planned on doing Terri this summer and you’ve Schlichenmeyer run out of ideas, which is The Bookworm why you need this book. First of all, when was the last time you really looked around outside? What kind of cool creepy-crawlies live in your yard? What does the night sky look like where you live? What can you do with a single blade of grass? This book will tell you. Or let’s say you and your friends love to play games. With a few simple things you have around the house, you can make a hoop-and-arrow game, a goofy-golf course, or a fun hockey game in the grass. If you’re facing a rainy day, there are card games for you to learn in this book, as well as some magic tricks to try, some different kinds of hide-and-seek, and a new game called Crikinole that you can make and play. If you really like crafts, learn to make rock art either for your garden or lawn, or for your bedroom shelf. You can mix your love of creatures with art by making an ant farm. Or, if you love to dream on the stars, make a night sky dome. And for the kid who just wants to spend the summer with a good story, this book has those, too. There are myths and legends to read about, as well as tips on game-playing, wildlife-watching, and enough boredom-busters to last all year long! This summer, you’ve promised yourself that your kids will get three things: outside, fresh air, and from under your feet. But let me add another: this book. Authors Jane Drake & Ann Love give even the most outdoors-averse child something to do in Get Outside, and they appeal to all kinds of interests. What’s especially great about this book is that there are things to do for kids who have acres and acres to explore, as well as for apartmentdwellers without backyards. I also liked that the illustrations by Heather Collins make this an easy book for reluctant readers to enjoy. With adult help, I think a four- to six-year-old could find fun here but your seven- to 10-year-old is probably going to get more out of this book. If you need to battle boredom before it balloons, Get Outside is something your kids will never get tired of.
