B.C. premier Christy Clark stopped in at the Revelstoke Golf Club on July 31, addressing a mostly female audience in what was originally billed as a women-only event. Clark’s address to the audience of business community reps, Liberal supporters and local movers ‘n’ shakers started off on a family-values theme. She fielded localinterest questions on small business concerns and the condition of the Trans-Canada Highway through Revelstoke.
Clark brushed aside an audience member’s suggestion for a toll booth to pay for improvements on the treacherous stretch from Kamloops to the Alberta border, saying it would unfairly impact locals. “Maybe we could toll just people from other provinces,” she joked – quickly emphasizing it was in jest. It was, of course, an allusion to her Northern Gateway gambit, which has propelled her into the

It was one of the most obvious signs of the changes in Revelstoke. On a partly-cloudy day early in June, the streets in Revelstoke were lined with vintage cars – a hobby that comes from a love of automobiles, spare time for upkeep and money to invest. Early that afternoon, the new Revelstoke came out for a bike scavenger hunt. Close to 100 people gathered at Grizzly Plaza for their clues, then scattered about the city on their bikes for some fun and games. The contrast couldn’t help but be noted. Cycling has taken off in Revelstoke over the last few years. It’s not anything new – people have been bik-
ing the old trails around Revelstoke for decades and bike commuting is nothing, but as many long-time residents have noted, there are more and more mountain bikers hitting the trails and more and more townies zipping around town. This weekend, this trend will be celebrated with Bike Fest Revelstoke, three days of rides, races and more in and around town. The event will include a poker ride Friday night, group trail rides on Saturday and Sunday, a town criterium Saturday evening, and bike polo Sunday evening. “I think it will draw people to Revelstoke, show them we have a lot of cycling to offer whether its road riding north and south of town, mountain biking,” said Brent Strand, one of the organizers of Bike Fest, along with
Mike Gravelle of Skookum Cycle. “Lots of people seem to cycle and it would be nice to get everyone together and celebrate cycling.” There aren’t many statistics to go with that demonstrate the rise of cycling in Revelstoke. You could look at the clutter of townies at the farmers’ market on Saturday mornings, or the steady stream of road cyclists pedalling down Airport Way or north and south on Highway 23; or the full parking lots at Mt. Macpherson. Statistically, there’s little to go on. The number of people taking part in Bike to Work Week at the start of summer has risen consistently over the events four years. Revelstoke Museum to create major exhibit Land of Thundering Snow Museum team to lead collaboration on history of avalanches and snow science to culminate in national virtual exhibition with the Canadian Heritage Information Network’s Virtual Museum AARON ORLANDO editor@revelstoketimesreview.com
The Revelstoke Museum & Archives is embarking on a two-year project to create a virtual exhibit on the history of Canadian snow research and avalanche safety. The exhibit, to be named Land of Thundering Snow, will be launched on the Canadian Heritage Information Network’s Virtual Museum website in the summer of 2014. “Our immediate goal will be to present this history in a dynamic website,” said Revelstoke Museum curator Cathy English. “In the longer term, we want to ensure that Canada’s professional avalanche heritage is preserved and presented to Canadians and the world.” Project manager Hayley Johnson confirmed that project has received $237,000 in funding from the Canadian Heritage Information Network, and will be a significant undertaking for the Revelstoke Museum. “It’s fantastic,” Johnson said. “It’s a pretty extensive project.” “A virtual exhibit is an exhibit that people can access via the Internet,” English said in a statement. “Like all museum exhibits it is based on real objects – such as photographs, diaries, newspaper clippings, sound recordings, objects – that have stories to tell.” In a statement, the Revelstoke Museum explained that the virtual exhibit, “will be

a unique, comprehensive resource giving the user unprecedented ‘behind the scenes’ access to material not generally accessible to the public. It will feature the latest information on avalanche science and safety; avalanche control; the anatomy of an avalanche; staying safe in avalanche country; and the ecology of avalanches.” In order to tell their story, the Revelstoke Museum needs your help. They’re asking anyone with stories, photographs, journals or important objects such as avalanche research or safety equipment to contact the museum. Although there will of course be a local focus due to Revelstoke’s unique geographic location at the centre of avalanche science history and ongoing research, the exhibit “will be vast in terms of time and space.” “For example, very few people realize that serious avalanche studies started in Canada as early as 1885 with the construction the Canadian Pacific Railway through Rogers Pass, or that there are records of a snow avalanche destroying a First Nations village near Nain, Newfoundland in 1782,” the Revelstoke Museum said in a statement. The exhibit will contain educational components for both teachers and students. Major partners in the Land of Thundering Snow project include the Canadian Avalanche Centre, the Revelstoke Railway Museum, Okanagan College, and Parks Canada. Several team leaders have been selected. Hayley Johnson is the project manager. John Woods will serve as lead researcher and writer. Tomo Fujimura will be researcher. Premier talks Northern Gateway in Revelstoke from page 1 national spotlight over the past week. The B.C. government outlined its five conditions for the controversial Enbridge pipeline a week ago. This was followed by a war of words between Clark and Alberta premier Alison Redford over B.C.’s demand for more fiscal and economic benefits from the project, culminating in Clark’s walkout on the Council of Federation meeting in Halifax, where she vowed to boycott any national energy strategy until the B.C. government’s Northern Gateway issues are addressed. Clark said B.C. will benefit to some extent during the construction of the Northern Gateway pipeline, but the minimal benefits would dwindle once it is completed. “For the first five years, we’ll get some benefit,” Clark said. “For the next 25, really not very much, so we’ve got to improve that.” Clark outlined figures supporting her position. She said Alberta and the federal government will take the lion’s share of $81 billion in tax benefits. She added Alberta will earn 100 per cent of the estimated $103 billion in royalties generated by sale of the oil to Asian customers. “In addition to that, there are the billions of dollars in incremental new profits that the companies are going to take, and here we are in British Columbia taking all the risk for this and getting eight per cent of the benefits and very, very few jobs.” She estimated the pipeline could generate fewer than 100 long-term jobs over the next 30 years. continue her war of words with the Alberta premier, regaling the audience with tales of her tough talk last week. “What I said to Alison Redford is, I said, ‘Look Alison, you have a much stronger interest in this than we do, frankly. It’s going to benefit your province way more than it’s going to benefit mine. So, if you want this pipeline to go ahead, you need to sit down at the table and start having a conversation about how we’re going to make sure
British Columbia workers, British Columbia’s economy sees some benefit from it. Otherwise, we’re not going to have it. It’s just not going to happen.’” Clark also indicated her willingness to play a waiting game, saying the B.C. government is prioritizing natural gas resource development in the north, including the development of five natural gas pipelines from the Northeast to north coast refineries for shipment to Asia.
“We’re going to have a trillion-and-a-half dollar industry starting up in British Columbia. That’s my economic priority, frankly, because it’s going to benefit everybody in our province,” Clark said. “So I said to Alison, ‘Look, I know you want this pipeline, but I got five – and we’re busy.’” Clark said her stance on improving marine oil spill response capabilities on the B.C. coast would have an added benefit, improving B.C.’s capability for non-tanker oil spills. “We don’t have adequate spill response for that now,” she said. “We have to have nothing less than the world’s best spill response protection. So, let’s go look at Norway and Scandinavia where they’ve been moving a lot of oil for a long time down a very difficult coastline, and they’ve done a great job of it. Let’s look at them and see how we can meet or beat their standards.” She reiterated calls for the same worldleading standards for terrestrial spills. Clark was on a road tour through the region. On July 30, she appeared in Sicamous, a popular summer lake retreat for Albertans that was heavily impacted by flooding in late June. Clark promised a B.C. government advertising campaign in Alberta to send the message that Sicamous is back open for business. The usual steady summer flow of Alberta pickups full of oil patch workers hauling jet boats has ebbed since the flooding. On the evening of July 31 she travelled to the NDP stronghold of Golden, B.C. While there, she attended the acclamation ceremony of Columbia River–Revelstoke BC Liberal candidate Doug Clovechok. He will contest the riding held by popular incumbent NDP forest critic Norm Macdonald.

A bureaucratic shake-up of the way private B.C. waterpower applications are administered by the province will bring proposed independent power producers to the fore in the coming weeks. The change is designed to ensure proponents who’ve staked a claim on a particular river are actually moving forward with that application, including new requirements that proponents conduct ongoing development work, such as surveying,
geotechnical studies, archaeological exploration and biological studies, for example. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations spokesperson Thomas Winterhoff told the Times Review that the province switched over to a new “investigative licence” system in 2010, but older claims were grandfathered in. Now, they’re being required to comply with the more stringent new system. He said the system also seeks to balance IPP projects with other potential land uses so that water power applica-

tions, “are not used for the sole purpose of staking a claim or excluding other investment opportunities on Crown land.” One new requirement is public advertising. Proponents in the Kootenay region (including Revelstoke) are now required to advertise their claims in local newspapers, bringing the proposed projects to public eye at an early stage. The advertisements draw public attention to the proposed projects, many of which have been filed away for years and years with little public knowledge.
Winterhoff said the new requirements are already shaking up the system. There are about 650 Land Act waterpower applications in the province, including about 60 applications in the Kootenay–Boundary region administered from a ministry office in Cranbrook. Provincially, an estimated 80 per cent of the pre-2010 applications are expected to receive an investigative licence. Another 15 per cent have been abandoned and another five per cent are expected to be disallowed by the government. In the Kootenay-Boundary region, seven
applications have been withdrawn, while another three have been disallowed. “Applications that are being disallowed typically have not submitted an investigative plan or the investigative plan has not included sufficient information to make a determination on the issuance of an investigative licence,” Winterhoff said in a statement. “The requirements for the investigative plan are outlined in the letter that the ministry sent to each proponent.”

A Lumby man was sentenced to two weeks in jail for driving drunk while on his way from Alberta to an alcohol treatment centre in the Okanagan. Jesse Isaac Wightman was stopped at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 23 North after he was observed swerving all over the road on Mar. 28, 2012 at around 5 p.m. It didn’t take long for police to find him, and when they pulled him over, he swerved off the road into the ditch, Crown prosecutor Mariane Armstrong told the court at the Aug. 1 monthly sitting. Wightman showed visible signs of impairment and gave breath samples of 0.22 and 0.23 – nearly three times the legal limit. The court heard Wightman
drank seven beers since leaving Okotoks, Alta., on his way to BCTeen Challenge, a faith-based residential program for youth 19 and older that are dealing with substance abuse problems. Armstrong proposed a high fine and a one-year driving prohibition, citing the fact Wightman was undergoing treatment as a sign he was taking steps to cure his alcoholism. Wightman’s lawyer Melissa Klages asked for the minimum sentence – a $1,000 fine and one year driving prohibition. “I think given the fact he is enrolled in such a lengthy and intensive program, the minimum is suitable,” she said. Wightman then stood up and addressed the court. He thanked his father for forgiving him and giving him one more chance to turn his life around. He apologized for his actions and for
endangering lives on the road. Justice Mayland McKimm hesitated before handing down his sentence. “This young man has a serious struggle with alcohol and I have nothing but compassion for people struggling with alcoholism,” he said. However, while mulling over the circumstances, McKimm abruptly called for the morning break so he could have more time to make a decision. When court resumed, McKimm blasted Wightman for his actions, saying he “endangered the public in such a horrific way.” “In my view a fine is grossly disproportionate to the seriousness of the offence,” said McKimm. He sentenced Wightman to 14 days in jail and a year-long driving prohibition.

VICTORIA – The B.C. legislature’s internal finances are being dragged into the 21st century in response to a damning report from Auditor General John Doyle. MLAs will start releasing detailed expense reports and conducting Legislative Assembly Management Committee meetings in public starting this month, Speaker Bill Barisoff announced after a hastily arranged meeting to respond to the audit. Two new financial staff positions are being added to address what Doyle called “pervasive deficiencies” in basic financial accountability. The audit found that MLA credit card bills were being paid without receipts, and the legislative assembly hasn’t produced financial statements despite a 2007 recommendation from the
previous auditor general. Legislature bank records didn’t correspond with actual bank balances, and records for the gift shop and dining room don’t allow for efficient management. Doyle said a future audit will look at the $119,000 annual allowance for MLA constituency offices, which Barisoff had asked to be exempted from the current examination. Transfer amounts and salary expenditures were verified, but other expense claims were not. Barisoff and Clerk of the Legislative Assembly Craig James emphasized that the audit did not find any misappropriation of funds. Doyle said he was unable to rule out fraud because the records aren’t complete enough to do so. Senior MLAs for both parties sit on the management committee, which administers an annual budget of $62 million to run the
legislature chamber, law clerks, library, security and other departments. They include B.C. Liberal house leader Rich Coleman and caucus chair Gordon Hogg, as well as NDP house leader John Horgan and caucus chair Shane Simpson. Simpson said the problems go back many years, and he wants to make changes rather than point fingers, which sparked a furious response from B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins. “B.C. Liberal and NDP MLAs are clearly circling the wagons, resisting calls for accountability with regards to their skyrocketing expenditures,” he said. Cummins called for Barisoff to resign for failing to get the management committee to intervene sooner, a suggestion Barisoff dismissed as a product of the summer “silly season” where trivial items make the news.

Residents of the rural area around Revelstoke will get a chance to comment on proposed new zoning bylaw at open houses in Trout Lake and Revelstoke on Thursday, Aug. 9. The new zoning bylaw replaces the current zoning bylaw for rural Revelstoke and expands it to include the entirety of Area B of the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District, which stretches from Mica in the north to Trout Lake in the south. The zoning bylaw creates a regulatory regime that sets into law ideas expressed in the Area B Official Community Plan, which was adopted in 2008. “Zoning puts the OCP into effect and helps ensure the long-term vision for the community is respected
because zoning regulates the use and development of a site or parcel of land,� said Jan Thingsted, a planner with the regional district. The zoning bylaw will regulate everything from lot sizes and uses to set backs and building heights. Residents of the regional district will get a chance to give their feedback at two open houses on Aug. 9. The first will be at the Trout Lake Community Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the second will be at the Revelstoke community centre from 6:30-9 p.m. Thingsted will give a brief presentation at each open house and residents will be able to view zoning maps, ask questions and make comments. “We had a good turnout for the OCP open houses and I am hoping people will come out for these ones,� said Loni Parker, the director for Area B. “We really do
want the best product possible and that happens when we have public feedback.� The bylaw has been in the work for several years and required the regional district to go out and map out all existing land uses for incorporation in the new bylaw. The bylaw passed first reading by the CSRD’s board of directors at their July meeting. Once public input is incorporated, it will be sent off to a number of referral agencies for comment before going back before the CSRD board for second reading. “It’s always exciting to see a project of this significance come to fruition,� said Parker. “At the end of the day, I hope people will be very pleased with this.� Those unable to attend the open houses can submit comments online at www. csrd.bc.ca.

Premier Christy Clark visited the riding of Columbia River–Revelstoke on July 31 to throw her support behind Doug Clovechok who will run for the BC Liberals in next year’s provincial election. “I am here to help nominate a candidate in a riding that is held by the New Democrats and has been since 2005. The reason I am here is because I believe we can win this riding back,� Clark said. Clark called Clovechok “the best possible candidate to win this riding for the BC Liberals. “What Doug is going to be facing in this next election is a candidate on the other side who does not believe in resource development,� she said. “A candidate who does not fundamentally believe in the power of the private

sector. Adrian Dix says that resource development is a disease. I fundamen-
tally disagree with that. That is what has built our province. It’s what has built the Kootenays. It is what is going to build our future for our children and families no matter where they live.� Clovechok said Columbia River–Revelstoke had traditionally been right-leaning. “This has historically been a Social Credit riding, and was a BC Liberal riding. And we should never have lost it,� Clovechok said. He said the Trans-Canada would be a priority for him. “Christy had the opportunity today to come through the Rogers Pass and she knows what our highway is like there. You can’t shut communities down for 18 days from the rest of Canada. We have to do something about that.� He also spoke about “a group of people that are trying to limit our access to our back countries.� “They want to shut down our back
countries and shut down our waterways so that you and I and our kids don’t have the birthright that we have in British Columbia to use those systems,� he said. “It has got to stop and I am going to fight with you to do that.� Clovechok added that he thinks people have to respect the environment, but did not see the need to be preservationist. “We do not want the extinction of human beings from this land. We want to use them,� he said. “Today what I will do is give you a promise. I promise you that I will represent this riding to Victoria ... I am not fun in the corners. My elbows are up and I tell you what, Norm Macdonald get your hockey helmet on, because it is game on,� Clovechok said. “No disrespect to Norm Macdonald because he is a nice guy, but I am more than a nice guy. I can out nice him and I can
out work him.� In order to wrest the riding back from the NDP, Clovechok will also face vote splitting from a revived BC Conservative Party, who are also vowing grassroots representation in Victoria. Premier: LNG development to spur IPPs from page 3 The Integrated Land Management Bureau (ILMB) maintains an online database of land tenure applications, including applications for things like new floating docks, cell towers, power lines, gravel pits, heli-skiing tenures and so on. Typically, the database is lightly peppered with a few waterpower project applications a year. Over the past month, it’s been flooded with new projects, mostly from the Kootenay region. Speaking on background, a Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations staff member explained that the Kootenay office is just ahead of other regional offices on the paperwork, and applications across the province will be listed on the ILMB website shortly. David Keiss is the vice-president of project development with Syntaris Power, which has just issued several waterpower investigative licence applications for pre2010 projects. They include several projects near Revelstoke first proposed in about 2008 by Atla Energy, which Syntaris recently acquired. Keiss said he got relatively short notice about the changes and has been working to bring his projects into compliance. “They’re trying to bring the process in alignment with other resource extraction processes and get all of the projects up and moving,” Keiss told the Times Review. “It was a straight up ‘either or’ questionnaire. Either you’re going to go forward with these types of investigations or you’re going to abandon the application.” Keiss said he understood the province’s motivations. “They’re obviously trying to clear up the tire kickers and people that are hanging onto applications who really don’t have any intention of doing any further work,” he said.
At the local level, Keiss said the new requirements are good employment news for biologists, archaeologists, geotechnicians and other contractors involved in developing IPP applications. “All of these are good stimulus for the economy,” he said. Meanwhile, the lynch pin for larger projects is attaining an ‘energy purchase agreement’ from BC Hydro. There is a standing offer for much smaller IPP projects under 15 megawatts, but only nine of those licences have been issued by BC

BC Hydro community relations manager Jerry Muir explained that BC Hydro’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2012 (which is still in draft form) calls for the purchase of 2,000 gigawatt hours of electricity from clean energy producers, which includes private IPP waterpower projects. If the IRP moves forward as is, it is anticipated that BC Hydro could issue another ‘Call For Power’ in late 2013. This process leads to bankable ‘Energy Purchase Agreements’ with BC Hydro, key to securing financing for the projects. Hydro is targeting a 2016–2018 timeframe to bring these projects online. Critics, however, have questioned the economic viability of the IPP projects. They were spurred on in the just over
five years ago when changes to provincial energy ‘self-sufficiency’ regulations under former premier Gordon Campbell created a climate favourable to the private projects. However, in an effort to spur natural gas development in the north, current B.C. premier Christy Clark revised those requirements in early 2012. The change prompted some IPP critics, such as the Wilderness Committee, to predict the demise of proposed IPP projects. No so, says Clark. In a July 31 interview with the Times Review, the B.C. premier predicted an electricity-hungry B.C. gung ho on developing all kinds of generating capacity on top of the proposed Site C Dam on the Peace River. Her vision is for five or “perhaps more” liquid natural gas (LNG) processing plants on the north coast. The plants use copious amounts of electricity to covert gaseous natural gas into a more compact liquid that can then be shipped to Asian customers. “They will be principally powered by renewables ... we are going to be creating a huge new demand for electricity. Site C, for example, – the entire power supply of Site C could be used by phase two of just one of the [LNG] projects,” Clark said. “There’s going to be a huge new demand for renewable electricity, so that means that independent power producers are going to be busy around the province,” Clark added. Much of the future of proposed regional IPP projects, however, lays beyond the 2013 provincial elections. Clark is trailing badly in the polls and faces vote-splitting from a resurgent BC Conservative Party. The BC NDP have been vocal critics of the way the current government has handled independent power projects – including criticism of the ‘staking’ process – and have vowed a shake-up of their own if elected.

Most of the new measures should be in place before school starts in the fall. The two schools closed at the end of the 2012 school year. ENGINEERING EXPRESSION OF INTEREST TO ADMINISTER A SANI DUMP FACILITY The City of Revelstoke has an existing sani dump facility on the road adjacent the Super 8 Motel. It functions to receive sewage waste from recreational vehicles. The sani dump facility consists of a concrete trough directing flows to a sewer pipe which is connected to a City owned and operated sanitary sewer. There are also 2 water connections, one to clean the aforementioned drain and one to clean out the recreational vehicles sewage tank. The City has funded the operation and maintenance of this facility since the mid 1990’s as a tool to assist in attracting visitors to the City. However to encourage local area development, the City seeks to move this facility to another location and is seeking Expressions of Interest from parties who may wish to integrate this facility into their operations. The Expressions of Interest should include a description indicating how and where the facility would be developed and a timeline for development of the facility. The City would prefer proposed locations nearby existing City sanitary sewer and water mains to be used to serve the facility; however, the City will consider other options. The City will be responsible for abandoning the existing facility on the road adjacent the Super 8 Motel and is open to suggestions on City input to the new facility, for example using City land or City forces to assist with construction and/or maintenance activities. Revelstoke’s latest public art project was installed in front of the community centre Wednesday afternoon. The Sternwheeler Pavilion, designed by artist Rob Buchanan and built by Darryl Ross, Rudy Magirena and Robert Maraun, pays tribute to the SS Revelstoke steamboat that paddled up and down the Columbia River until it was decommissioned. The pavilion is modelled to look like one of the wheels of the steamboat. It contains nine upright posts, with six benches and three open
walkways in between them. The pavilion will be accompanied by an already-existing interpretive panel about the history of the sternwheelers on the Upper Columbia River. It is made from local cedar that was harvested by Downie Timber and the Revelstoke Forestry Corporation. The wood was then milled by a combination of Kozek Sawmill, Take It to Heart Contracting and Lortap. “The piece showcase the heritage story of the paddlewheelers but it also showcases the work of the local timber industry,” said Buchanan. Funding for the pavilion is from the hotel tax.

James Lebuke’s and Cynthia Pfeiffer’s stack of broken records this season grew a little higher this past weekend as they and 46 other Revelstoke Aquaducks competed at the Okanagan Regional Swimming Championships. Cynthia set a new regional record in the girls Division 7 100m Backstroke while James broke records in both 50m and 100m Freestyle in Boys Division 2. About 250 swimmers representing nine Okanagan and
Thompson area swim clubs swam at the eight-lane outdoor Brockelhurst pool in Kamloops. The top three competitors in each event as well as the top two relay teams earn an opportunity to race at the provincial championships in Naniamo from August 17–19. This year, 24 Aquaducks made the cut individually, with another nine as relay team members. “I am very proud of our swimmers – there were a lot of great performances this weekend,” said head coach Jeff Beatty. Revelstoke placed third in the team standings, close behind
Kelowna Ogopogos but a fair ways back from meet champions Salmon Arm Sockeyes. “We have our work cut out for us now,” Beatty of the Provincial Championships. In regards to their training in these final two weeks of the season, the Beatty said the Naniamobound Aquaducks will be, “honing their speed, while trying to stay super fit at the same.” About 800 swimmers from all reaches of the province will attend the threeday meet which includes diving, synchronized swimming and water polo in addition to speed swimming.

Revelstoke musician Bob Rogers plays Grizzly Plaza The Revelstoke educator’s session musician career is still paying off to the tune of “a few cases of beer� for work on Aerosmith’s hit Dude Looks Like a Lady ALEX COOPER reporter@revelstoketimesreview.com
Odds are you’ve heard Bob Rogers play music. You might have caught one his gigs around town but most likely you’ve heard the trombonist/elementary school teacher play as part of the blaring horn section on Aerosmith’s classic hit Dude Looks Like a Lady. “When I was a kid I listened to Aerosmith,� Rogers told me as he sipped a lemonade at the Modern. “To get to play on that and meet them was pretty cool.� Rogers has been a teacher in Revelstoke for nearly 20 years, first as the high school band instructor and lately as an elementary school teacher. Before that, he was a working musician in Vancouver, playing trombone with the likes of The Temptations, Natalie Cole, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Opera and more. Despite giving up the musician’s life, he still keeps playing and will be performing this Friday and Saturday as part of the summer music series in Grizzly Plaza. Rogers grew up in Vancouver the son of two piano instructors. He started playing that instrument when he was five but when he was old enough to join the school band he decided to follow his own path and take up horn playing. He wanted to play trumpet but the store the school rented instruments from was out, so he ended up on the trombone. He could have switched, but he found that he enjoyed playing the instrument so he kept it up. He cited one teacher, Sharman King, as inspiring him to keep playing.
“He took me to some recording sessions when I was in high school,� said Rogers. “I thought, ‘These guys are getting paid to do this? That sounds like fun.’� Rogers decided in grade 12 to pursue a musical career. He attended the Humber College music school in Toronto and then transferred to the University of British Columbia. “I think it was more playing music that I enjoyed. I was fairly successful at playing the trombone,� he said. “I think I probably would have enjoyed playing another instrument just as much. It was what I played and I just kept at it. I think you have to like the sound of what you’re playing. “And it’s challenging to play too.� After university Rogers started freelancing around Vancouver. He played in a band called the Wildroot Orchestra, in jazz groups, brass bands, and as a session musician. He did a week of shows with legendary soul group The Temptations, and a gig as part of Natalie Cole’s band. He also played with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra and was a sub for the Vancouver Opera. “I freelanced with as many different groups as I could,� he said. “It’s a tough way to make a living.� The Aerosmith gig came about because he was friends with the man who wrote out the horn lines. Rogers was an Aerosmith fan growing up, but this was during the band’s low-period, when it had fallen out of the spotlight. The album he played on marked Aerosmith’s comeback and the two songs Rogers played on – Rag Doll and Dude Looks Like a Lady, both charted. He still gets royalty cheques for

that work. “It works out to a few cases of beer,� Rogers said. After years of eking out a living as a freelance musician, Rogers did the math and decided it would be more lucrative – and more stable – to go into teaching. He spent a year in Pitt Meadows, B.C., before moving to Revelstoke to be the band teacher at RSS. While here he met up with bassist Shannon Sternloff and drummer Travor Wallach and they started playing together.
“We had fun doing that so I kept playing with Shannon and Trevor pretty well from when I was first here,� Rogers said. “They’re great guys. They’re both great musicians. We have fun playing music together, which is the most important thing. If it wasn’t fun, we wouldn’t be doing it.� For the upcoming gig in Grizzly Plaza, the trio will be joined by Salmon Arm saxophone player Sandy Cameron. Rogers said the show will consist of jazz standards as well as his own original compo-
sitions. “Jazz standards are fun to play but they’ve been played so well by so many people,� he said. “I’m hoping I can keep writing original stuff so at gigs like this plaza gig I can do as much original material as possible.� The Bob Rogers Quartet plays in Grizzly Plaza as part of the Summer Music Fest on Friday, Aug. 10, and Saturday, Aug. 11, from 6:309:30 p.m. each evening.

Revelstoke is in for a special treat when the Shuffle Demons bring their hot jazz-funk-fusion to Grizzly Plaza for a free show on Aug. 14. The legend of the Shuffle Demons is well known to Canadians. For more than 25 years, the Canadian jazz-funk-fusion band has been entertaining fans around the world. The band’s high energy, out-of-the-ordinary live show bills them as folk, jazz and world music festival mainstays, and has taken them on 15 cross-Canada and European tours, as well as through Asia, India and Australia. The familiar scrape of metal on ice will return to the Revelstoke Forum when the Grizzlies kick off their main camp next Friday. Dozens of hopefuls will take to the ice at the camp in the hopes of making an impression on rookie head coach and general manager Kevin Kraus. “I’m bringing in kids to hopefully have a more challenging camp then we had last year,” said Kraus. “I’m looking to have things more intense this year, make the kids work a little harder and hold them more accountable.” Kraus, 22, was an assistant coach with the Grizzlies last year; this his first year in charge of a team. He is the Grizzlies fifth head coach in five years. The camp is the first phase in putting together a team for the regular season. After the camp Kraus will be off to Junior A camps to try and recruit players who don’t make that league. The top players at main camp will get invited to join other recruits in the pre-season in September. The number of returning players is still up in the air and depends on who makes it to Junior A this year. The Grizzlies iced a young, skilled team last year and many players are expected to move up a league or two. “It’s tough to say who’s coming back from Junior A or not, but I’m going to guess about eight [returning players],” said Kraus. “Probably five forwards and three defenceman.”

While the paucity of returning players makes it more difficult to recruit a team, it also helps in that it provides the Grizzlies with a reputation for developing players for higher levels of hockey. Tyler Reay, who was acquired midway through last year, is expected to return as one of the team’s four 20-year-olds. Locals Kent Hendrickson and Riley Creighton are also expected to be back. “The good thing is we do have a pretty good group of core players coming back that know who I am,” he said. “I feel they can translate what I want to the new kids coming in. I’m not all about finding the most skilled players with bad attitude. I’d rather have a good player with a good attitude.” The Grizzlies kick off the regular season at home against the Chase Heat on Friday, Sept. 14. The following night it takes on Sicamous, the team’s first chance to get revenge for its first round loss last season. The exhibition schedule has not been announced yet. Team owner Lew Hendrickson said an advertising blitz is planned and the team will also be making a big push to sell season tickets in the lead up to the season. He mentioned several new promotions to sell tickets and he’s optimistic fans will return, even after the debacle that was the aborted move to 100 Mile House in April. “The good news is the management from the last two years is gone and we’re starting out with a clean slate,” he said.

Trail crews revive Mt. Mac Challenge course Old Revelstoke Cycling Association trails at Mount Mackenzie were damaged during ski hill expansion, but will be repaired for final race BART JARMULA Revelstoke Cycling Association
The Arrow Helicopters Wednesday Night XC race series is winding down for the season, with only one more remaining. The final race takes place at the old Mt. Mac Challenge course, which is being revamped for the race. At the fifth of six races on Aug. 1, 24 racers challenged themselves on a course that included a large section of Flowdown, as well as sections of Dusty Beaver and Berm Donor.
Unfortunately, it seemed like a lot of the usual suspects that hang out at the front of the field were missing in action and subsequently Brendan Macintosh comfortably led the way to his third win of the season. Jeff Ferguson made his first appearance on the podium this season finishing second while Tim Auger put in a hard effort for third. This course featured a race within the race as the downhill section of Flowdown was timed. Despite starting the race 10 minutes late, Dominic Unterberger clawed his way back to 7th, had
the fastest lap time and won the gravity enduro section with a time of 7:25. Callum McLeary was second by just one second. He may have had the sanest approach of any racer as he took his time on the ascents and railed the timed descent. Female riders accounted for almost half the racers. Mel Bernier again led from start to finish (with the fastest gravity enduro time as well) to win her sixth race of the season. Annie Gornall pulled away from Sarah Newton on the second lap to finish in front of her for third.
With only one race left in the series the overall standings are quite tight. On the men’s side Kellen Viznaugh and Dominic Unterberger are tied in first place. Dominic does have on race in hand but Kellen is still in line for bonus points for taking part in every race so the last race will be decisive. Brendan Macintosh and Don Roberston also have a race in hand and could also conceivably take over the lead should the two leaders falter. Mel Bernier is leading the women’s standings. Though Atsuko Knight is only six points behind her passing Mel will be almost impossible if Mel shows up for the last race. Liz Kozak has snuck into third place but
Sarah Newton still has a chance to pass her. The last race of the season will be held at Revelstoke Mountain Resort on Aug. 15. The RCA built trails up there many years ago for the original local XC mountain bike race called the Mount Mac Challenge. During the ski hill expansion the trails suffered some damage but thanks to the efforts of the RMR trail crew they have been brought back into riding shape again. Details of the race will be posted shortly but make sure you circle your calendar and save the date. Even if you don’t plan to race join us on the Rockford patio afterwards for the series awards.

Beyond that, it’s hard to guage, except via anectodal evidence from people who have been biking here for years. “Anecdotally, every time you go out now there’s people in all the parking lots, including the new ones we’re building,” said Keith McNab, the president of the Revelstoke Cycling Association, who has been biking here since the early-90s. “Every time you go out there’s more people on the trails.” The RCA has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the surge in mountain biking. It has undergone a renaissance in recent years, with membership jumping from 112 last year to 178 so far this year. Along with that has come a number of new trails around Revelstoke. At Mt. Macpherson, the popular Flowdown trail was finished last fall and proved a hit from the start. When the snow melted this year, it felt like everyone was riding it. The renaissance also led to a revival and legalization of the Boulder Mountain downhill trails. Once illegal, they were devastated by logging and since rebuilt and brought into the fold. Nowhere is the rise of mountain biking in Revelstoke more prominent than on the spectacular Frisby Ridge trail, which in the year since it was finished has become a destination ride in the province. Trail counters are being installed to monitor how many people are riding the trail. In the meantime, the fact two overflow parking lots were built this year is a sure sign of the trail’s success. This year the RCA is building another trail in the Begbie Bluffs area, expanding the parking lot at Griffith Creek on Mt. Macpherson, and, if funding permits, building several new link trails on Mt.
Macpherson. Meghan Tabor, the co-ordinator for Revelstoke Tourism, said more people are asking about biking at the visitor centre. No specific numbers were tracked for biking but she noted that promoting mountain bike tourism was a new thing. “I think it’s going to keep taking off,” she said. Brent Strand grew up in Revelstoke and as the organizer of the weekly pedal and pint rides, he knows the trails around here as well as anyone. He moved to Fort MacMurray for a time, but moved back to Revelstoke seven years ago. He has noted more and more people biking. “There just seems to be a lot of cycling in general – everyone’s riding around town on their cruisers,’ he said. Bike Fest will combine all aspects of cycling. The poker ride on Friday will be a cruise around town. Saturday there will be a group ride on Frisby Ridge. Sunday will feature a group ride to Keystone. Both rides will leave from the community centre parking lot at 9 a.m. “We’re going to highlight the alpine trails of Revelstoke,” said Strand. Later Saturday there will be a criterium, a short race through downtown. The plan is to have one race for serious road bikers, another for everyone else, and potentially a kids race, said Strand. Sunday, after riders return from Keystone, there will be a bike polo demonstration. The sport is similar to regular polo, but on bikes instead of horses. Strand hopes Bike Fest will turn into a week-long event in Revelstoke “I know Revelstoke is starting to get on the map a little for its spectacular cross-country rides. There sure are lots of people on the trails now. Ten years ago you’d go out and not see anybody, now you’re guaranteed to see people every time you go out
