Already challenged by her own struggles with Multiple Sclerosis, Thomson tasked her husband Glen to do more research on the Internet. “I couldn’t bring myself to do it,” says Thomson. “It was just too hard. The National Energy Board (NEB) will begin public hearings into an application by Chevron Canada for priority access to capacity on Kinder Morgan Canada’s Trans Mountain Pipeline on Jan. 15, 2013 in Calgary. Chevron filed for approval of Priority Destination Designation in June. If granted the company would be second in priority to ensure an adequate supply of crude oil from Alberta to its Burnaby refinery. Shippers that contract for fixed volumes on the pipeline get first priority. Currently Chevron is in the third level of priority and must request the amount of volume they need to ship on the pipeline. If Kinder Morgan receives requests for more capacity than the pipeline can accommodate, the shipments are reduced equally for all shippers. Since that apportioning has been going on since 2010, Chevron has had its requests reduced by as much as 70 per cent, according to spokesman Ray Lord. Please see pRIORIty, A3

Tuning up for the Worlds Members of the Simon Fraser University Grade 1 Pipe Band have settled in at John Forty’s Court in Stirling, Scotland and spent their first few days tuning up for Saturday’s World Pipe Band Championship. Wasting no time, the real work toward the Worlds has begun with daily courtyard practices in a rare, blazing heat. It’s critical legwork, considering rival bands continue to improve. Both Scottish and Canadian pipe bands have been gaining momentum over the past few years, details not lost on Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee. “There’s no doubt this year will be as tough as ever,” said Lee. “The so-called gap between the top bands and the other

contenders is getting smaller all the time, giving more bands a reasonable chance to win.” SFU is one of 26 bands facing off in the elite Grade 1 category, one of seven Canadian bands to compete this year. In total there are 11 Scottish bands, five Irish, including reigning world champion Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band, one from France and two from the U.S. “If you look at the last 20 years a majority of wins have gone to SFU and Field Marshal Montgomery,” said Lee. “We are still two of the strong favorites to win. But in addition to them and us, there are a number of strong bands out there. The Scottish, with bands like Scottish Power,

have gotten stronger over these past few years and so has the Canadian contingent.” SFU’s junior bands—the Robert Malcolm Memorial

Grade 3 band and its juvenile Grade 4 band, also in Scotland to prepare for the Worlds—face tough competition and are practising daily.

As Megan transitioned to solid food, her parents had a new worry; PWS kids have a different sensitivity to food and its textures so they puréed everything to ensure she didn’t bite off more than she could safely chew and swallow. Children with Prader-Willi face other hurdles. Many are developmentally delayed, they have an abnormally high tolerance to pain so they’ll pick at their skin without realizing the damage they’re doing, and they have cognition and learning disabilities. Thomson monitors and measures everything Megan eats, as well as her activity levels. She’s on a strict 1,000-caloriea-day regime that she’ll have to maintain the rest of her life. The kitchen cupboards and

It’s

refrigerator are locked. They’ve heard the horror stories of PWS kids raiding the pantry in the middle of the night, eating everything they can reach while their parents slept. Even at family dinner time, Thomson has to take a hands-on role with Megan’s meals. “She never feels full. She’ll say ‘I’m hungry’ even though there’s food right in front of her,” says Thomson. “We have to remind her she’s got food in her tummy.” The challenge of controlling Megan’s food intake will be compounded when she starts attending pre-school, and then eventually regular school, independent of mom’s vigilance. “Some kids forage garbage, some steal food or lie to get food,” says Thomson. “You

world. This year walks are being held across Canada and the United States, Belgium, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, with the goal of raising $1 million. Thomson hopes Burnaby’s efforts will contribute $20,000. “It’s a fun day,” says Thomson as PWS families get to meet each other, share stories and educate others about what they’re going through. “They don’t feel so alone. There’s a lot more PWS people out there than we’re aware of.” • This year’s One SMALL Step walk for Prader-Willi Syndrome begins at 10 a.m., Aug. 26, at Fraser Foreshore Park. As a result, shippers have had to try different methods to ensure each gets an adequate supply of oil. Chevron has shipped crude to its Burnaby refinery by tanker truck and, said Lord, they could also use rail. If approved, the new priority designation would also apply to any future expansion of the pipeline. Chevron’s North Burnaby refinery produces 30 per cent of transportation fuels used in B.C., 25 per cent of the province’s diesel and 40 per cent of jet fuel used at YVR. Members of the public who wish to participate in the hearing can apply for intervenor status by Aug. 24 or file a letter of comment by Oct. 30. Lia McMillan is nearing the end of a three-week project painting the newest mural in Burnaby Heights. She says her depiction of colourful birds perched on a telephone wire is inspired by the utility poles and wires along the alley between Gilmore and MacDonald just north of Hastings where she is painting. “I’m just trying to bring some colour to the alley,” says McMillan of her first mural, which will take her three weeks to complete. The latest creation is the eighth mural commissioned by the Burnaby Heights Merchants Association for the neighbourhood and is funded by merchants, sponsors and a summer employment grant. The program is designed to reduce the opportunities for grafitti while beautifying the area.

Valuable violin recovered The owner of a 240 year-old violin worth $50,000 that was stolen in Burnaby last week is again able to play a happy tune. The violin has been recovered from a home on 19th Avenue by the Burnaby RCMP Strike Force, acting on information gathered during the investigation of the theft from the victim’s vehicle in the underground parkade at Metropolis at Metrotown on July 31. Burnaby RCMP said after purchasing two laptop computers at the Apple Store, the victim locked them in her 2002 green Chevy Venture, then returned to the mall to do more shopping. When she returned home she discovered the computers, a Louis Vuttton bag, an iPhone, the 1772 Joseph Nadotti Fecit violin and its accompanying $3,000 bow had been stolen. While the violin, its case, the bow and a songbook have been recovered and returned to the victim, the other items are still

missing. No charges have been laid, but Burnaby RCMP are still investigating.

HighGate shooting A 20-year-old man was shot near HighGate Village late Tuesday evening, according to Burnaby RCMP. The shooting was in the 7200 block of Salisbury Avenue near Kingsway. RCMP do not believe it was a random act, but they don’t believe it was gang related. The suspect is described as a man in his early 20s, about fivefoot-eight with an average build and wearing dark clothing. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-2947922.

The annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research will return to Swangard Stadium on Sept. 16.

NEWSLEADER FILE

Fox run set for Swangard photo@burnabynewsleader.com

Burnaby’s annual Terry Fox Run is near and dear to Anna Solnikova’s heart. It’s also a family affair. Solnikova has survived two battles with cancer herself. When she was 17 she was diagnosed with the same type of bone cancer in her leg that cost Fox his leg and eventually his life. But advances in research and treatment, some of them funded by the Terry Fox Foundation, allowed her to keep her leg as well as her life. “I wake up every morning and look at my leg and say, ‘thank God.’ So much of what I have is because of the foundation,” says Solnikova. Which is why she doesn’t blink twice taking on the task of organizing Burnaby’s annual contribution to the hundreds of annual runs that are across Canada and around the world on the second Sunday after Labour Day. Since it was founded in 1981, the Terry Fox Run has raised nearly $500 million. To share in her gratitude and the work load, Solnikova enlists family and friends as well as volunteers. Her husband is the co-organizer and is in charge of setting up Swangard Stadium on the day of the run, her brother-in-law sets up tents, her mom sets up the route through Central Park, her father handles the

water stations and her sister ensures kids are entertained. Friends also help with the merchandise table, registration and collecting donations. “We have many other wonderful volunteers who help us make this possible,” says Solnikova. Last year 277 participants ran, walked, rolled and cycled the two, five and 10 kilometre routes that

Fall/ Winter

wind through the park, raising $17,143.81. This year, Solnikova hopes 300 participants will be able to raise $20,000. “The weather is such a huge component of that,” says Solnikova, adding the guest speaker at September’s run will be Alison Ince, Terry’s nurse, who will share memories of her time with Fox and his family. “This is a true family event.”

This year’s Terry Fox Run will be held Sunday, Sept. 16 at Swangard Stadium. Registration begins at 9 a.m., ceremonies an hour later and the run commences at 10:20 a.m. Pre-registration isn’t required, nor is there any minimum donation. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Anna at 604-716-2693 or tfrbby@gmail.com.

ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

One off the top It’s mandatory to wear a bike helmet when you ride in B.C., but not in many parts of the world. People in such enlightened countries as Denmark and the Netherlands are not forced to don a nutshell, and yet here we fear the alternative. It makes sense: Who wouldn’t suddenly see the wisdom of some cushion when they’re flung over the bars? The issue arose recently with Vancouver’s decision to launch a bikeshare program next spring. The plan is to make 1,500 bikes available at about 125 stations in the downtown and the Broadway corridor between Main and Arbutus streets. The program will make it easier to leave the car at home. But promoting bike use is about removing barriers, and a bike helmet is a significant one. The City of Vancouver says it won’t ask Victoria for an exemption from the mandatory helmet law, and that may hinder its success. Only three bikeshare systems among the 300 or so worldwide have such a law. The two in Australia— Melbourne and Brisbane, where there is a helmet law—have failed miserably. On the road to encouraging more people to use bicycles to get around, it’s worth considering repealing the mandatory helmet law. At very least, an exemption for adults should be considered. Many will still wear their helmets. In Portland, where there is no helmet law, 80 per cent still do. And in B.C., despite the law requiring helmets, seven of the nine people killed on bikes in 2010 weren’t wearing one. In the end, the best route to a safer ride for cyclists is to have more bike paths and more people out on the street riding. The more bikes out there, the more it’s part of the landscape, and the more people in other vehicles are watching out.

Someone needs a holiday here Sometimes it seems like the whole world is on vacation. Don’t know about you, but I’m here in this box, at this terminal (double entendre?), the second week of August doing the same thing I was doing the first week of January. Don’t get me wrong (Hi Boss!), I love the job. Just feeling a bit cranky, and I kind of despise teenagers right about now. They’re easy to spot, all sunbleached hair and nut brown in tank tops and flip flops. Struggling with huge decisions like do I go to the beach or the mall? Or flake out at the park? What a drag. Then there are the teachers. Easy to spot—the ones feeling a little blue right about now because, you know, it’s August already? Just three or four weeks left of summer? A friend teaches college. We’re talking four months. Does hate the sin, love the sinner apply here? I’m going to stop myself now, because this pity party is not

Chris Bryan making me feel any better. On days like this, it seems the world is one big beach and all I see is a chained-link fence. The park across the street from my office is crazy with lawn chairs and bocce tournaments. My neighbours are packing up their SUVs for the Island, and for Okanagan sun. Right. The bright side… The drive into work is kind of nice. There’s no one on the road. And wow! There are parking spots galore once I get to work! Maybe those pleasures outweigh the aggravations of being on holiday. Those beaches can get busy. And don’t forget how hot it can be out in the sunshine between dips in the ocean.

Sunscreen is expensive! And drinking a beer or two out on the deck in the afternoon every day can put a few pounds on that waist line. Perhaps perspective is needed. Is anyone out there? Maybe I’m not the only one, sitting here, by myself, while all of you, you know… My brother lives in Denmark, and his Facebook page is full of updates from Mallorca, the cabin and great dinners with friends under the northern sky. In Scandinavia you don’t say you’re going on vacation. You tell folks when you’re going back to work. “Really?” “Yeah. Just for a couple weeks, then I’m off for another five.” “Oh.” Somewhere in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm there must be hidden factories where replicants do all the work. I was pleased to hear Stephen Harper is using Europe’s economic troubles as an opportunity to teach all those Continental layabouts a lesson,

and perhaps nudge them into reconsidering their awful socialist tendencies. Harper told them they’re on their own. There’d be no cash from us—Europe is rich. Instead of taking our money, they need to raise the retirement age like us, dammit, and stop having so much fun! Perhaps we’re all headed the way of Asia. Instead of mandatory vacations of four and five weeks (and more) like one finds in Europe, we will be more like Taiwan, where you get seven days, or Thailand’s six calendar days, or even China, where you get five. After 10 years it goes up to 10. Considering all that, maybe it’s time for me to shut my trap a little and count my blessings. And keep marking Xs on that calendar until the break arrives.

Let’s make jobs, not a mess Re: Time to get real about oil (Letters, NewsLeader, Aug. 3) Ziggy Eckardt has an interesting take on pipelines in B.C. and essentially says as long as there is a demand for oil there will be a need for pipelines. And, of course, he’s correct. Not only has he hit that nail on the head, he has also identified the underlying cause of the current pipeline debate: an oil-dependent society. As long as we refuse to seriously address our addiction to oil as a source of energy, we will need pipelines. I dare say most of us would like the energy corporations, led by governments with a broader vision, to develop other cleaner forms of energy in terms of both its extraction and its use—in

Mr. Eckardt’s words, “a responsible development of our resources.” And, finally, like him I too want my grandchildren to have jobs. I’d much prefer, however, that the job was not one of cleaning up after us. Bill Brassington Burnaby

COMSHARE A GREAT EXPERIENCE This summer I had the privilege of volunteering my time with the Comshare summer daycamp based out of Lochdale Community School. Comshare is staffed entirely by young people, most of them high school or university students who are left to care for elementary school children during the summer days. Each day I arrive for camp I’m amazed at the dedication and talent all the

volunteers and camp staff put into making sure the safety and enjoyment of the kids comes first. Camps like Comshare can make all the difference in the lives of the youth involved in the program. That extends to the volunteers and staff as well as the younger children, since all gain valuable life experiences and a fantastic opportunity to make new friends, build on old friendships and experience things that they may not have been able to be part of through the normal school year. It’s been a fun way to spend my summer, I hope that next year when it comes time to register and find something to do with the months off from school, parents and students seriously consider coming to Comshare. It was amazing for me as

a youth, and now again as a volunteer. Trevor Ritchie Burnaby

PIPELINES LOOK LIKE HIGH RISK, LOW RETURN VENTURES I remain very concerned about the proposed new oil pipelines. The default position in the making of land use decisions must always be negative. The proponent must prove that the environmental risk is acceptable, the disruption to people’s lives will not be unreasonable and the economic benefit to the community will be substantial. If it fails to do so the project should not proceed. I am not against progress and development but have a healthy skepticism when it comes to how those seeking

approval of mega-projects assess environmental risk. As things stand I believe that neither the Northern Gateway nor Kinder Morgan Canada’s TransMountain Pipeline should be built. The proponents will have to do a great deal more than they have so far to convince me that either project makes sense. Right now both look like high-risk low-return ventures, at least from the point of view of the general public. Garth Evans Burnaby

TIME TO CLEAN UP AROUND THE HOUSE I have some serious concerns about Burnaby City Hall. They keep saying they are the very best when they are anything but. Over

the years the grounds and surroundings of City Hall have been filled with tons of garbage and debris. I’ve picked up at least 2,000 bags of garbage in the area. I’ve been to other city halls and they have been very clean and tidy. With the city workers working about 40 hours a week, why can’t they put 38 into their regular routine and two into keeping the unsightly and forgotten sites cleaned up and maintained? Bacon to be tried separately Mobile Spa Services The spa that in Surrey Six case comes to you! Enjoy a relaxing spa experience where ever you are.

Kevin Diakiw Black Press

The trial of the Surrey Six case has been split into two, with Jamie Bacon being tried separately. Two separate indictments were filed in B.C. Supreme Court Thursday, allowing Bacon to be tried separately from Cody Rae Haevischer, Matthew James Johnston and Quang Vinh Thang (Michael) Le. All of them face charges in connection with the deaths of six people at the Balmoral Tower in Whalley on Oct. 19, 2007. Police believe four of the victims in the Surrey Six case were gang-related. Two others, 22-yearold Christopher Mohan, a neighbour, and 55-year-old Ed Schellenberg, who was repairing the fireplace, were innocent bystanders. “Separate trials will enable Mr. Bacon to bring applications in relation to issues involving only Mr. Bacon, including issues like solicitor client privilege, that were raised before the Honourable Mr. Justice McEwan in Mr. Bacon’s civil (habeas corpus) proceeding,” B.C. Criminal Justice Branch spokesman Neil MacKenzie said. Proceeding in this way, he said, will allow the trial of the other three accused to proceed without being affected by issues which only involve Bacon. MacKenzie said he could not elaborate on the case as it’s before the courts. The indictment against Bacon lists two counts including first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder of Corey Lal. The indictment against the others alleges they committed the murder of Lal, while Haevischer and Johnston murdered Ryan Bartolomeo, Michael Lal, Edward Narong, Schellenberg and Mohan. Both indictments also list convicted killers Dennis Karbovanec and Anton HooitesMeursing as co-conspirators. In 2009, Karbovanec pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder and one count of conspiracy. He is currently serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for 15 years.

The third annual Royal City Pride Society’s Pride Week is not just about the city’s “queer” community taking pride in itself but also in New Westminster, says the organization’s president. The festival runs next Thursday (Aug. 16) until Aug. 19 at various locations. “We have more people coming on board to volunteer, more businesses in the community are getting involved with us, the City of New Westminster has been really supportive, the community as a whole in New Westminster has been just tremendous,” said Shelly Reinhart. “Our mandate is to support the queer community, but also a much larger community base. Our people are moving out into New Westminster from Vancouver and elsewhere in the Lower Mainland. We are a visible group now. We have a lot of new businesses in New Westminster, but we’re trying to support not just queer businesses.

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO OUR ANNUAL

“We’re really creating relationships and partnering up with a lot of groups which is fun for us.” Reinhart said the society wants to grow with the city with all the changes that are happening in it. They want residents to see that just like them they are a family group of people living in the community with kids and dogs. She grew up in Coquitlam but has loved living here ever since moving to New West four years ago. “Watching it grow in the last four years has made me extremely happy to be involved with the building of our community and the community as a whole. It’s meant me finding a home, and being at home with an entire group of people,” said Reinhart. She wouldn’t be surprised to see attendance at this year’s festival double to more than 4,000. The festivities begin with a laugh—lots of laughs actually—on Thursday. Like last year, the Laff Riot Girls will open the festival

performing at the Columbia Theatre on Thursday starting at 8 p.m. Lesismore and the Stonewall Party will appear the next night, Aug. 17, starting at 7 p.m., at the Heritage Grill. The big day is Saturday when the society will hold its Pre-Pride Brunch at the Coming Home Cafe from 9 a.m. to noon followed by Hills and Heels. It’s a fundraiser for New Westminster’s Lookout Emergency Aid Society which will start from the Urban Gypsy, 614 Columbia St., at noon before going up Sixth Street to city hall for the Pride Proclamation. The Pride Festival in the Park will run from 1 to 5 p.m. in Tipperary Park. The Pride Dance starts at 7 p.m., at the Heritage Grill. The festival, which will raise funds to benefit New Westminster’s Lookout Emergency Aid Society, will conclude on Sunday with a brunch at The Boathouse, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For ticket information and more go to www. royalcitypridesociety.com.

Sinclair stars in semi loss

Thunder take 3-0 lead over Lakers

Burnaby native scores hat trick in big game at Olympics Burnaby’s Christine Sinclair was the star of the show but it wasn’t enough to propel the Canadian women’s soccer team into the gold medal game at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London on Monday. Three times Sinclair scored to give Canada the lead over the top-ranked American squad, but each time the United States responded and eventually prevailed 4-3 with a goal in the dying seconds of injury time in the 30-minute overtime. Instead of playing world champion Japan in the final, Sinclair and Canada will face France in the bronze medal game Thursday. Sinclair’s play drew praise from across the country and even from her opponents “Spare a thought for Canada and Christine Sinclair, who was brilliant for 120 minutes,” said a Twitter message from the United States women’s team. Some have called for her to be Canada’s flag bearer at the Olympics’ closing ceremonies on Sunday. What she did on Monday, said many, ranks right up there with many of Canada’s MIKE RIDEWOOD/COC best-ever Olympic performances even if it doesn’t Christine Sinclair goes against Carli Lloyd of the United States in the women’s result in a medal. soccer semifinal in Manchester at the 2012 London Olympics, on Monday. In the first half, Sinclair scored after taking a pass from Melissa Tancredi, doing a dribble “Obviously, we’re disappointed and upset. We felt that the around a defender and then sliding a shot past U.S. referee took it away from us, so yes we are disappointed. The noise the Langley Thunder made in Game 3 of its Western Lacrosse Association semifinal with the Burnaby Lakers on Tuesday night was almost as loud as Mother Nature was making. On a stormy night outside, the Thunder was downing the Lakers 10-6 inside at the Langley Events Centre to take a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. They had an opportunity to wrap it up back in Burnaby at Bill Copeland Arena on Thursday. Colton Clark had a pair of goals for the Lakers with singles going to Scott Tinning, Shaun Dhaliwal, Chase Williams and Carlton Schuss. Shayne Jackson had three goals for the Thunder with Athan Iannucci and Tor Reinholdt each scoring twice. The top point performance was by Lewis Ratcliff with a goal and four assists. In Game 2 at Copeland last Friday, the Thunder defeated the Lakers 9-6 getting the game’s first four goals. Dane Stevens scored twice and assisted on another with Trevor Moore, Justin Salt, Clark and Dhaliwal scoring the others. Scott Jones had four assists. Game 1 last Wednesday had the first-place Thunder edging the Lakers, who finished fourth, 9-8 in Langley. The hometown team got a power play goal from Ratcliff with 35 seconds left in regulation for the win. Officials had assessed Burnaby’s Peter McFetridge a high sticking penalty 68 seconds earlier. The Lakers had trailed 8-5 with a minute remaining in the second period, but got a goal with 50 seconds left. Most of the third period went scoreless until Burnaby managed to tie the game with two minutes remaining on goals 1:38 apart setting the stage for Ratcliff’s winner. Ratcliff ended the game with three goals and three assists while former Burnaby Jr. Laker Garrett Billings had a goal and five assists, including setting up Ratcliff’s winner. Jones and Clark scored twice for Burnaby with singles going to Moore, Stevens, Casey Jackson and Dhaliwal, who also had four assists while Jackson had three.

BCGEU offer withdrawn By Tom Fletcher Black Press

After targeting provincial ministry offices with their second one-day strike, the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union says the provincial government has followed through on its threat to withdraw its offered wage increase. BCGEU negotiators had rejected a raise of two per cent this year and 1.5 per cent next year when it was presented in late June. Citing a two-year wage freeze leading up to this year’s negotiations, the union wants 3.5 this year and a raise

equivalent to the cost of living increase for 2013. The latest one-day strike created a four-day long weekend for 180 employees in provincial ministry offices Tuesday. BCGEU members refused to work at three forest ministry offices, with 40 staff in Surrey, 50 in Campbell River and 60 combined at transportation and forest ministry offices in 100 Mile House. Another 30 union members in agriculture, health, environment and labour ministry jobs in Kelowna struck for the day. Union officials have not indicated when their next strike

action will be. The first was July 3 at liquor distribution warehouses in Kamloops, Vancouver and Victoria. After the first walkout, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said the wage offer could be withdrawn if strikes continued. “We hope we don’t have to repeat job action going forward,” BCGEU president Darryl Walker wrote on his blog Wednesday. “But that’s the likelihood if the government doesn’t make us a fair and reasonable offer soon. We are prepared to take job action to the next level if we have to.” newsroom@burnabynewsleader.com

Vancouver works with developers to create Downtown South

Revitalizing the Granville Loops The City of Vancouver has been working with developers such as Cressey Development to re-imagine the area around the Granville Street onramps into a thriving neighbourhood they call Downtown South. With plans for new roadways, biking and walking access to the Stanley Park SeaWall and False Creek waterfront and plenty of commercial space, the community will be the perfect place to purchase a home. “It’s all that Downtown South has to offer,” says Cressey Development Manager David Evans. “There’s entertainment, shopping, the beach, the Seawall ... It provides access to all the amenities.”

Cressey is proud to be a part of the area with Maddox, a 32-storey condominium tower located on Howe and Drake streets. The pedestrian-friendly aspect of the community is particularly important, Evans says. “One of its biggest strengths is access,” he says. With Granville Island, Yaletown and Robson Street within easy reach, buyers who purchase in the area will find everything they could possibly imagine close by. Future projects include a grocery store, the opportunity for vendors such as food carts and sidewalk extensions for outdoor cafes and restaurant patios.

evening at home, no matter what the weather is doing outside. The 10-foot ceilings in some homes add to the considerable sense of space that is inherent in the living areas, which offer plenty of room for entertaining. Lakewood prides itself on quality workmanship and attention to detail, and this is certainly apparent at One92.

There will be 69 homes in the project, ranging from 474 to 1,283 square feet. “There’s something for everybody,” says sales manager Rob Carlsen. “The response has been fantastic.” With features like nine or 10-foot ceilings (depending on where in the building your home is), a spacious walk-in shower in the ensuite and lush landscaping outside, Salix is a truly beautiful development. Many of the homes have views of Mount Baker or the surrounding Clayton Heights area. Building on the popularity of Woodbridge’s Willow Grand development, “we were able to listen to purchasers’ needs and wants,” says Carlsen. “It genuinely makes me excited that we covered a lot of the bases that purchasers were looking for.”

‘Something for everybody’

No trouble finding a home in Clayton Heights by Kerry Vital

Clayton Heights is a rapidly growing community on the border of Surrey and Langley. Due to its proximity to both cities as well as Cloverdale, it is perfectly situated to take advantage of every amenity that the Lower Mainland has to offer. Less than an hour from the Vancouver International Airport and less than half an hour from the U.S. border, Clayton Heights offers education, recreation, shopping and dining all within a few minutes. Woodbridge Homes’ La Rue La Rue is an intimate community of 49 two- to four-bedroom townhomes. With beautiful details like nine-foot ceilings on the main floor and stainlesssteel appliances, there is much to love at La Rue. With its tagline of “the street you want to live on”, La Rue is proving very popular with people of all demographics. “La Rue offers so many things,” says sales manager Andrea Castro. “I love this product.” The kitchens are particularly beautiful, with ceramic tile backsplashes and stone countertops that are perfectly complemented by the chic wood laminate flooring throughout the main living areas and entrances. Conveniently located close to several

schools, parks and recreation, Castro says that La Rue is great for young families. “Clayton offers so many things for families,” she says, adding “these are a different style of home. You’re close to everything, but you’re also quiet and away from all the busy-ness.” Lakewood’s One92 Lakewood has brought a collection of carriage homes, condominiums and townhomes to Clayton Heights, in a variety of floorplans. With 72 homes in the project, oversized windows, sleek laminate flooring and amazing open-plan kitchens are just some of the amazing features. A designer tile backsplash is complemented by the under-cabinet lighting and contemporary shaker-style cabinetry and gorgeous quartz countertops. A special feature of the homes is the electric fireplace with mood-adjustable accent lighting. It is perfect for curling up with a book or enjoying a romantic

Woodbridge Homes’ Salix Woodbridge continues with its mastery of the Clayton Heights area with Salix, a collection of one-, twoand three-bedroom condominiums. The open-plan layouts and three interior schemes (Craftsman Traditional, Casual Contemporary and Modern Chic) available at Salix make for a truly stunning mix of residences.

Clayton offers so many things for families,” says La Rue sales manager Andrea Castro.
