activities, there often comes an increase in the noise level in your neighbourhood. Residents are reminded that there is a City bylaw in place that is designed to afford all residents quiet enjoyment of their own property, while being considerate of others in the neighbourhood. “Noise is interpreted as any unreasonable disturbance not normally expected at any given time of the day or night,” says City Bylaw Services Of¿cer Naomi Humenny. “You are running your lawnmower at 10 a.m. that is considered reasonable; running your mower at 10 p.m., not so much.” A common complaint ¿elded by the City By-
law Enforcement department is barking or howling dogs left unattended in yards all day with the owners often away at work. Under the bylaw – “no person shall own, keep or harbor any animal or bird which by its cries unduly disturbs the peace, quiet, rest or tranquility of the surrounding neighbourhood or the public at large”. Other common complaints include home and building construction and in some cases noisy parties. In the case of noisy parties, concerned residents should contact the RCMP detachment, as parties tend to occur after hours. In regard to construction, no person in the City shall undertake any type of con-
struction work before 7 a.m. or after 10 p.m. No construction for pro¿t or gain can be undertaken on a Sunday, without explicit written approval by the City Engineer. “Residents can carry on their normal outdoor routines during the summer months, with yard work and construction projects,” says Humenny. “We simply ask that you consider your neighbours by keeping the noise to an acceptable level at the acceptable times.” To review a copy of the City of Cranbrook Bylaw #2612, please visit our website at www.cranbrook.ca.

A ¿re was reported Aug 1, on the west side of Lake Koocanusa, near the Strauss Road area. Fuelled by wind, the ¿re quickly grew to 5.5 hectares. Air tankers and ¿re¿ghting personnel responded. The ¿re is currently under investigation and occurred in a rural area. No communities or structures were threatened. Recent thunderstorms across the Southeast Fire Centre have led to a few small ¿res, but none large enough to be of note. Initial Attack crews continue to respond to the small
lightning ¿res. As well, a surge in the number of abandoned camp¿res, combined with high temperatures throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, has ¿re of¿cials urging recreationalists to be extremely careful with camp¿res. Fire wardens responded to 34 abandoned camp¿res over the B.C. Day long weekend, raising the number of abandoned camp¿res to 133 this season. Abandoned camp¿res can start wild¿res. This season, nine camp¿res have escaped and caused wild¿res. With lightning in the forecast and hot and dry conditions antici-

The Canadian Federation of University Wo m e n - C r a n b r o o k Club pleased to announce they have a large number of new local Artisans who have committed to the 27th Annual Bazaar to be held Saturday, November 3rd at the Cranbrook Golf Course. “We are thrilled with the overwhelming response from new contactsâ€?, said Cathryn Henley, Chair of the Bazaar Committee 2012. “We do have room for more without crowding, and we are taking registrations until early Octoberâ€?, Henley added. However, if it Âżlls up before then, we will have to close registrations as we do not want to overcrowd the Clubhouse. People like to shop with easeâ€?, said Henley. Proceeds from the Bazaar go to our many ongoing projects, with the bulk of it to the scholarship and bursary programs at the College of the Rockies and Mount Baker Secondary School. “Our intention is to pay off our scholarship commitment at the College this yearâ€?, stated Henley, so that monies will be there long after we are dead and gone. It is our legacy to the women students of the East Kootenay. We will still have fund raising events for Mount Baker Secondary School and hope to increase the monies we give to the recipients of our awards. “It is a special year for our clubâ€?, stated Henley. “We have been active in Cranbrook for 30 years nowâ€?. The club is celebrating their 30th Anniversary at the Manual Training Centre on Thursday, September 20th. We have a lineup of speakers with Ghada Al Atrash being our guest speaker. The evening starts promptly at 7pm and everyone is invited to attend this enlightening and special event. Cake and beverages will be served at the close. Our small club of 12 members are busy with Bazaar preparations as well as with this 30th Anniversary Party. Anyone wishing to join this active club is welcome to research us at www.cfuw-cranbrook.com.

Have you been taking a look around your yard this summer and realized that there is something missing in your planting? Do you need a background plant that adds substance or a focal point in a mass planting? Consider adding a Burning Bush to your collection. The Burning Bush gets its name from the vibrant, scarlet foliage it sports in the fall, but the shrub has year-round interest in the yard. The leaves are dark green through the summer and sit on branches adorned with unusual, corky “wingsâ€?. The bare branches provide some great winter interest. But it is in the fall that this shrub pulls out all the stops. The leaves turn a brilliant red and they remain that colour until they drop. Small, red-orange fruit further add to the spectacular effect. The Burning Bush is a relatively maintenancefree shrub. It grows in full sun to part shade and is not too particular about soil requirements – it can tolerate a lot of conditions with the exception of extremely wet areas. A Burning Bush can be left unpruned, however, for a tidy and neat appearance or if there are space issues in the yard, it can be sheared annually. The best time to prune is late fall when the bush is dormant. This shrub also transplants very well. There are many uses for a Burning Bush, from background plant to accent in a mass planting or even as a formal or informal hedge. This moderate grower also comes in several varieties. There are the Fireball and Winged Burning Bush and even a much more compact Dwarf Burning Bush. This plant gets to be about ďŹ ve feet high and six feet wide. The Burning Bush needs regular watering, so it is important to water an established plant weekly or more often in extreme heat. Especially in the ďŹ rst growing season, it is important to follow a regular watering schedule to establish a deep, extensive root system. All newly planted trees and shrubs should be watered at the base, ensuring the root ball is saturated. This means watering every other day or even daily on hot days in the ďŹ rst growing season. Up to two years after planting, young trees and shrubs still need to be watered at least twice a week. You should always water at the drip line – indicated by how far the branches spread out at their widest part. Be sure to water thoroughly, deep down to the roots and then allow the soil to dry out. Apply water slowly, so it sinks deeply into the soil. This “deep wateringâ€? is the key for your entire garden. It is better to let a soaker hose run for an hour than to have a sprinkler going full blast the same amount of time. The reason behind this is that the roots will go where the water is. So if the water is only near the surface that is where the roots will be as well. This can become a problem in times of drought. The ďŹ rst place to dry up and heat up is the top few inches of soil. If this is where your plant’s roots are located as well, they will heat up and dry out as well. On the other hand, send the water deep and the roots will follow, staying cool and damp even on hot summer days. Another tip about watering: to minimize water waste, water in the morning before the heat of the day to allow more water to penetrate to the roots and minimize evaporation at the same time. Till next time‌ happy gardening, Submitted by Tara

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to ¿ll all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Free Transit Rides to Cranbrook Farmer’s Market This Summer
Enjoy the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market with free transit rides every Saturday morning from June 23 to October 6, 2012. The free ride comes with a catch: each passenger must be carrying a reusable or recycled bag, be traveling to and from downtown Cranbrook and indicate to their transit driver that they are attending the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market. The City of Cranbrook is funding the free rides for all 16 Saturday markets. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs 9 am to 1 pm, but the free bus rides are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. That gives early birds and last minute shoppers’ equal access to transit time. Trips to and from the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market via BC Transit are for non-transferable passes only. This innovative partnership between BC Transit and the City of Cranbrook also achieves five specific goals identified in the community’s long term sustainability plan – “Connecting to our Future.” For more information please visit – www.bctransit.com.

JobFest concert-style career fair coming to city Submitted An innovative, engaging travelling exhibition for youth is refuelling and heading back on the road for another round of connecting with young people and their families, educating them on labour market trends and the multitude of career opportunities in B.C. JobFest is a rockconcert themed mobile event that is designed to get youth and young adults excited about their futures, while teaching them about the various tools and resources government has developed to support them in their quest to ¿nd their perfect career. During its tour of Northern B.C., more than 3,700 people in rural and remote com-
munities came out to see what the buzz was all about. “There is a wealth of career opportunities right here in B.C. for young people, along with a wide number of training paths to consider - and this is only going to grow as our economy continues to grow and our population ages,” said Pat Bell, minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation. “JobFest is helping youth educate themselves on their options, and learn more about careers that might interest them - whether it’s a career in the trades or becoming an entrepreneur. It’s a fun, engaging way for them to start thinking about their future.” The exhibit will come to Cranbrook on September 8 and features

There will be over 350,000 new jobs expected, and growth in the demand for workers will exceed the growth in available supply by 61,500 by 2020. * The BC Jobs Plan will ensure the over $500 million provided annually for labour market and training programs is targeted to meeting regional and industry labour market needs. RCMP warn of new email fraud scam The Cranbrook RCMP have been noti¿ed of what appears to be another email fraud scam. This most recent email was received by a Cranbrook resident on their e-mail. The fraud is rather long-winded but at the end of the email there is a request for speci¿c personal information. Within the e-mail text are instructions on how to shop for this person who advises that a cheque will be forwarded to pay for the purchases. The Cranbrook RCMP would like to remind people that in previous e-mail and mail scams of this type, there was a request to purchase items on behalf of the fraudster and as promised, a cheque was forwarded

to pay the bills. These cheques were typically good enough to be deposited into the victims personal bank account, which increased the account balance for a few days until the cheque was determined to be counterfeit or fraudulent at which time it was declined or “bounced.” By this time the money would have been withdrawn with amounts sent or wired back to the fraudster, These cheques were typically made out for more than what was needed, with the fraudster claiming to have made a mistake and asking for the remaining money to be sent back to them. Once the cheque is deposited and money withdrawn, if that cheque is later declined by the bank, it is the person who cashed the cheque that is responsible for repaying money to the bank. The Cranbrook RCMP would like to remind people that no matter the circumstances, do not agree to deposit a cheque from a stranger and wire money back to them. If the cheque bounces, you will owe the bank any money that you withdrew. A good motto to remember is “if it looks too good to be true, it probably isn’t true.” The Government of Canada maintains a ‘anti-fraud’ website: w w w. p h o n e b u s t e r s . com which lists the many different frauds in Canada and is a good resource to consult. If anyone has any additional information about this or any other crime they can call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or East Kooteney Crimestoppers (1-800-222-TIPS). You can also “Google” Cranbrook Crimestoppers and leave a webtip.

WISE BUYERS READ THE LEGAL COPY: Vehicle(s) may be shown with optional equipment. Dealer may sell or lease for less. Limited time offers. Offers may be cancelled at any time without notice. Dealer order or transfer may be required as inventory may vary by dealer. See your Ford Dealer for complete details or call the Ford Customer Relationship Centre at 1-800-565-3673. ‡Ford Employee Pricing (“Employee Pricing”) is available from June 14, 2012 to August 31, 2012 (the “Program Period”), on the purchase or lease of most new 2012/2013 Ford vehicles (excluding all chassis cab and cutaway body models, F-150 Raptor, Medium Trucks, Mustang Boss 302, and 2013 Shelby GT500). Employee Pricing refers to A-Plan pricing ordinarily available to Ford of Canada employees (excluding any CAW-negotiated programs). The new vehicle must be delivered or factory-ordered during the Program Period from your participating Ford Dealer. This offer can be used in conjunction with most retail consumer offers made available by Ford at either the time of factory order or delivery, but not both. Employee Pricing is not combinable with CPA, GPC, CFIP, Daily Rental Allowance and A/X/Z/D/F-Plan programs. ‡‡No purchase necessary. For full contest rules, eligible vehicle criteria, and to enter as a Ford owner, visit www.ford.ca/shareourpridecontest (follow the entry path applicable to you, complete all mandatory fields and click on ‘submit’) or visit your local Ford Dealer for details. Open only to residents of Canada who have reached the age of majority, possess a valid graduated level provincially issued driver’s license, and are owners of Ford branded vehicles (excluding fleet customers and all Lincoln and Mercury models). Eligible vehicle criteria includes requirement that it be properly registered in Canada in the contest entrant’s name (matching vehicle ownership), and properly registered/plated and insured. Contest closes at 11:59pm (PST) on the last day of the 2012 Ford Employee Pricing campaign which will be no earlier than August 31, 2012. Limit of 1 entry per person. Up to 8 prizes available to be won in Canada in 3 possible prize categories, each worth up to CAD$50,000. Chances of winning are dependent on the total number of entries received up to each 10,000 interval of unit sales under the Employee Pricing campaign (“Draw Trigger”). Odds of winning decrease as the contest progresses, more entries are made into the contest, and opportunities for Draw Triggers lessen. Skill testing question required. ▲Offer only valid from August 1, 2012 to August 31, 2012 (the “Program Period”) to Canadian resident customers who own or are currently leasing (during the Program Period) a Ford Ranger, Explorer Sport Trac, or F-150 to F-550 (each a “Qualifying Loyalty Model”), or any competitive pickup truck with a pickup bed (each a “Qualifying Conquest Model”) and purchase, lease, or factory order (during the Program Period) a new 2012/2013 Ford F-150 to F-550 (excluding Raptor) (each an “Eligible Vehicle”). Qualifying customers will receive CAD$1,000 (the “Incentive”) towards the purchase or lease of the Eligible Vehicle, which must be delivered and/or factory-ordered from your participating Ford dealer during the Program Period. Limit one (1) Incentive per Eligible Vehicle sale, up to a maximum of two (2) separate Eligible Vehicle sales, per Qualifying Conquest/Loyalty Model. Each customer will be required to provide proof of ownership/registration of the applicable Qualifying Conquest/Loyalty Model and the ownership/registration address must match the address on the new Buyer’s Agreement or Lease Agreement for the Eligible Vehicle sale.
