Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson has announced regulatory changes will provide access to logging slash and wood-waste fibre needed by bioenergy producers and manufacturers of wood pellets and other bio-products. Amendments to regulations under the Forest Act, the Forest and Range Practices Act, and the Wildfire Act will bring into effect a residual forestry licence to cut, as well as a fibre supply licence to cut, for wood biomass. These licences will enable

smaller operators to acquire wood fibre and logging debris unwanted by primary harvesters. This includes the smaller trees, branches, limbs and tops of trees that are piled roadside or on logging landing sites as the by-product of a typical timber-harvesting operation. The new tenures do not grant rights to harvest standing timber. “These tenures will increase opportunities to turn slash piles and unwanted fibre into energy, wood pellets and other bio-products,” says Thomson.

Barkerville gold-panning championships Aug. 11-12 Elaine Edgington, the great-greatgranddaughter of Barkerville namesake William “Billy” Barker, will be Barkerville’s guest of honour at the 2012 Canadian National Gold Panning Championships on Aug. 11-12, and will speak at a special Discovery Day ceremony planned for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Discovery Day, which caps off a weekend of sesquicentennial celebrations at Barkerville, is the official commemoration of Billy Barker’s astonishing placer gold strike in August 1862. Barker and his partners discovered a 30-foot layer of rich gold-bearing gravel 52 feet below the surface of lower Williams Creek that averaged 100 ounces of gold a day. Discovery Day events will include musical performances throughout the town, a brand new Billy Barker historical interpretation, a visit from “The Spirit of Cariboo Cameron,” and a 100plus pound “Happy Birthday Barkerville” cake. The 2012 Canadian National Gold Panning Championships will be hosted by Barkerville’s own five-time World

Invitational Gold Panning Champion Scott Rea. The championships are a two-day extravaganza that is sure to appeal to gold enthusiasts of all ages. Competition categories include child, adult, seniors, professionals, teams, dash for the dentist (a children’s candyhunt), scavenger pile (an adult freefor-all), grudge match, and King of the Creek (the ultimate contest for bragging rights and a $1,000 cash prize). Each category has cash prizes and sponsored gifts for the winners (including a $1,500 high bank sluice for the adults and a Razor

electric scooter for the children). Anyone can participate, provided they register 10 minutes prior to each event.

The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. If you weren’t able to benefit from a relaxing and enriching vacation this summer, you’ll at least plan on taking a break that will allow you to socialize and recharge your batteries.

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.

BUY A GARAGE SALE PACKAGE AT THE 100 MILE FREE PRESS AND WE’LL HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT SALE! 10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this! Stolen purse recovered RCMP… from page 11

RCMP Detachment at 250-395-2456 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Purse theft On Aug. 2 at 11:41 a.m., 100 Mile House RCMP received the complaint of a theft from a vehicle parked in the 900 Block of Alder Ave. A purse and contents were taken from the vehicle. Police located and arrested the suspect. Charges of theft under $5,000 are being recommended against the 34-yearold 100 Mile House woman. Motorcycle hits the ditch On July 31 at 4:59 p.m., 100 Mile House RCMP, 100 Mile House Traffic Services and Clinton RCMP received several 9-1-1 calls of a motorcycle collision near 83 Mile on Highway 97. Both detachments responded and located a single male rider who was thrown from

his motorcycle near 81 Mile. Investigation revealed the rider had missed the corner and struck the ditch and was ejected from his motorcycle. He suffered a broken hand, broken foot and broken ribs due to the collision. The

48-year-old Kelowna man was also investigated for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. He refused to provide samples and was charged with refusing to provide a sample. Investigation into the matter is ongoing.
