White Lake logging sparks concern By Cavelle Layes MARKET NEWS STAFF
A group of White Lake residents has come together to fight back after learning of plans to log the area around their community. The residents do not want to completely stop the proposed logging, but are angered by what they say is a lack of communication between British Columbia Timber Sales (BCTS) and the locals. More than 70 people attended an
information meeting at White Lake Community Hall on July 30, an event organized by residents who had hoped to spread the word on planned clear-cut logging. Resident Hal Dyke found out about the logging plans almost accidentally, he says, after questioning surveyors he found on his property. Dyke initially learned that timber from the 24.3 hectares was to be sold sometime in February 2013. That date has since been pushed ahead, he says, with the timber sale sched-
uled to take place in the fall of 2012 and logging to commence March 2013. Dyke says there has been little to no communication with any of the residents. Colin Johnston, BCTS project manager for the White Lake area, says the community has been given more than enough time and information, noting the area was originally proposed for logging back in 1996 and was approved in 1997. This has given the residents more than 10

years’ notification, he says. Jim Cooperman, president of the Shuswap Environmental Action Society (SEAS), attended the July 30 meeting and says he was shocked to find out that BCTS had made no effort to contact the community regarding the logging plans. “I think the commentary has been very sad,” said Cooperman. Johnston, however, says BCTS representatives have met with resiSee Company on page A2

Continued from front dents on many occasions, including two separate meetings with representatives of the White Lake residents. They have also provided a four-page question and answer sheet addressing the concerns that have been brought forward to them. Johnston says residents can call him any time with questions they might have and that BCTS will do what it can to address them. Residents in the area have already expressed a number of concerns. Brian Morris Sr., of Big Valley Consulting Service and a concerned resident, said at the community meeting that he is worried about the unstable, steep topography. He explained that previous clear cuts above those planned resulted in water erosion, flooding, debris and landslides. “Problems after logging remain and become someone else’s problem,” says Morris. Johnston says he does not think the cut-blocks will pose a threat. “The slopes in the area are fairly gentle,” he said, adding the climate in the area is dry. Dyke expressed his fear of surface wells becoming contaminated due to the logging on the slope, as well as how his property value may see a decline. In an information sheet provided by Jim Wright, BCTS Planning states: “We primarily manage water quality by establishing reserve and management zones along streams and specifying the minimum distance machinery must stay away from streams. In this area, we hired qualified professionals to review terrain stability and hydrological conditions and impacts of our proposed harvesting, then incorporated their recommendations into our plans.” Other concerns of residents include the impact on the rare flora and fauna in the area, including the painted
turtle and the rubber boa snake. Wright says BCTS is going to take steps to ensure the safety of the species, and has already conducted an evaluation of the animals and plants in the area. Some residents, as well as SEAS, worry that tourism in the area may be negatively impacted, as there are a number of resorts in the area. Phil McIntyrePaul, project manager with the Shuswap Trail Alliance, says the trails are some of the most popular in the area. Many of the residents acknowledge that the forest is categorized as a working forest and understand that some logging must occur. However, the communication issue has sparked a petition that residents hope will not completely stop, but delay logging. Johnston is aware of the petition but says BCTS will not approve a delay in logging simply for the sake of it. “There needs to be a reason,” says Johnston. Cooperman, however, says what he views as a lack of communication is reason enough for a delay. “Two meetings have been held with a few community residents and the BCTS which allowed concerns to be expressed. However, no effort has been made to alter the plan regarding these concerns. “Before any logging should be allowed to proceed, we believe that the BCTS needs to undertake a legitimate planning process with the community that will adequately address their concerns,” states Cooperman in a press release. “At the very least, there should be a delay of at least one year before any contracts are signed to allow time for proper consultation, to inform all the residents of White Lake, and to do impact studies to address the concerns of residents,” said Steve Corrie, chair of the White Lake Residents Association (WLRA). #Areas around White Lake are destined for logging. there could be an easy solution the would make everyone happy. When logging began in Blind Bay, it was very controversial, he says. “We went through and created an intensive local use plan, and it was very successful.” Johnston says this process was done years ago when the plans for logging the area were developed. BCTS listened to the concerns of the residents in the area, he said, and altered plans to address them. The company sat down with the Shuswap Trail Alliance and other groups to make the logging as painless as possible. Johnston says the consultation now is something they do not need to do, but are doing to see if there are any new concerns that have not been brought up in the past. “There have been some new things brought up,” says Johnston, “ but most of the concerns have remained the same. “BCTS has held open houses, field trips and participated in working groups and community meetings for over a decade to develop an understanding of the issues,” stated Wright in an information package. There was a logging plan established years ago, but this was recently changed, explains Cooperman. “They changed the plans without telling anyone. People weren’t even really aware about it to begin with, but no one knew about the changes,” he says. While the initial log-
ging plan has changed, McIntyre-Paul is not too worried about what may happen to the trails. “BCTS will sit down with us. We will discuss from the trail side of things and they will talk
about what their plans are and we will proceed from there.” He said he is looking forward to meeting with BCTS. “They are really great to work with.”

Storm strikes a hit Wednesday the remote Blueberry Creek Area. The storm came on the heels of a Monday evening storm that spawned many power outages. B.C. Hydro’s Dag Sharman said a total of 16 outages affected 5,580 Shuswap customers – some for as long as six hours. “An outage from
7:41 to 8:28 p.m. south of Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road that cut power to 2,900 more customers was the result of a bird touching two power lines simultaneously,” said Sharman, noting crews worked throughout the night to restore power. The Salmon Arm Fire Department responded to six calls
during the storm – several involving ringing alarms set off by power outages. Firefighters from Gleneden’s Hall #4 responded to a hydro pole fire just after 8 p.m. Shuswap Search and Rescue was called out to help, with situations being resolved before teams could get

OPINION Olympic match might spur soccer boom Unless you’ve been totally ignoring the Olympics, you know Canada’s women’s soccer team lost 4-3 in extra time – mere minutes away from going to penalty kicks – to its closest, fiercest rival, the United States. You know Canada was going up against the team ranked No. 1 in the world, a country that has won the last two Olympic women’s soccer gold medals, and hasn’t lost to Canada since 2001, a span of 43 games. It was a game Canada wasn’t supposed to keep close, let alone lead three times. Christine Sinclair – who is always compared as the Wayne Gretzky of Canadian women’s soccer – scored three times and Canada was 10 minutes away from surely it’s biggest win in national team history, and a spot in the gold medal match against the reigning World Cup holders, Japan. But a suspicious delay of game penalty called by the Norwegian referee against Canadian keeper Erin McLeod, followed by an even more suspicious hand ball call against defender Marie Eve Nault in the box on the ensuring free kick, led to the U.S. scoring the tying goal on a penalty kick. Canadians from Vernon to St. John’s, Nfld., were livid over the calls. The players were stunned. The coaches were shocked. The ref’s calls and the final result aside, Monday’s match will likely set off a boom for women’s soccer in this country. It was a classic game, one of the most entertaining matches of all time. And that boom could grow bigger if Canada wins the bronze medal Thursday. A result this inspiring, hard-working group of athletes so richly deserves. – Vernon Morning Star

Longing to be up at the cabin When I got home last night from work I noticed that there had been a power outage. It hadn’t dawned on me as I drove home because of the full moon. However, the clock beside my bed was flashing 12 o’clock, 12 o’clock, 12 o’clock. For a second I thought to myself, I don’t know what time it is – how am I going to get up in the morning? And then I thought, I don’t care what time it is – I don’t want to have to get up in the morning. It was at about this point that I realized a storm had passed through and I hadn’t really noticed because I’d been working indoors and concentrating too much on the computer. We spend way too much of our lives in front of the &@##!!&*! things. It made me long to be up at the cabin where I make a point of not knowing – or caring – what time of day it is. One of the first things I always do when I get up there is take my wristwatch off and put it in the glove compartment of my vehicle.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS James Murray From that point on there is only daytime and nighttime. One of the nice things about being up there is waking up to the chatter of squirrels and the squawking of grey jays outside my bedroom window. It only takes one single morning for me to come to the conclusion that the sounds of the great outdoors are one heck of a lot better than the sound of my alarm clock, which has awakened/ annoyed me every other morning, day in and day out, for the past 42 years. I must say that I have come to hate the sound of that alarm clock. Time is unimportant up at the cabin. Sometimes, after breakfast, and I use the word breakfast loosely, because
more often than not I don’t bother making something to eat until closer to noon when I come back from three or four hours of fishing. The same way I won’t bother making lunch until well after midday – just before lying down for my afternoon nap. Precise meal times aren’t all that important when your at the lake. On particularly warm, lazy afternoons, when technically speaking, I’m supposed to be on a fishing trip, I’ll spend the whole afternoon sitting on the front step reading. (Trout don’t usually come into the shallows to feed until the sun starts to go down.) I pretty much do whatever I feel like, when ever I feel like it. I do enjoy fishing in the soft, waning light of evening, though, not to mention casting a line by the light of a silvery moon. It’s peaceful out on the water at night. I fish more by sound than by sight. The best part of fishing in the evening hours and/ or at night, is that you are under absolutely no obligation whatsoever to get up too
early the next morning. Which brings me back to that &@##!!&*! alarm clock that sits beside my bed. Last night, I knew I had two clear choices. I could simply reset the clock and let life go on as it is, or I could not reset the clock and see what happened when I showed up late for work the next day. The thought even occurred to me that I could go onto the Internet and try to find an alarm clock that sounds like the chatter of squirrels and/or the squawking of grey jays. We really do spend way too much of our lives in front of the computer. Anyway, I thought about it long and hard, and in the end, decided to go to bed and trust in the fact that, if nothing else, I have, after 42 years of being wakened by an alarm clock, become not only a creature of habit, but conditioned to doing the same thing, at the same time. I drifted off to sleep still longing to be up at the cabin.

# Kids celebrate the opening of the new Sorrento Spray Park by using it as intended, keeping their cool on a very hot Shuswap day.
Kids enjoy spray-for-all It’s usually an occasion for speeches, but for the official opening of the Sorrento Blind Bay splash park Aug. 3, there were simply quick acknowledgements so everyone could get back to enjoying lunch and the splash park. Columbia Shuswap Regional District Electoral Area C alternate director Jack McInally gave the new facility his seal of approval. “This is a multiuse park and it’s a really great place for the kids, he said. “This spray park is a total plus for residents of Sorrento and the surrounding area.
CSRD Parks team leader Marcin Pachcinski says this latest addition to the popular park is a result of a lot of planning and effort. “I’d like to thank the Electoral Area C Advisory Parks Commission and staff for their dedicated work in completing this project, he said. “This is definitely a jewel among our parks, and it’s nice to see so many kids enjoying it already, especially in this heat. The spray park includes three connected zones, one for toddlers, one for children and one for youth, with
spray themes ranging from misty mountains and rain forests to frogs and tulips. “We’ve created a kids’ zone that includes the spray park and the shaded playground, says Pachcinski. “And that still leaves the majority of the park free for people who come here to enjoy it with their dogs. A number of local residents attended the official opening. “It’s a great place to bring our grandkids when they come to visit in the summer and I really like the addition of the water park, it’s awesome, says Mau-
reen Wiltzen. I also like the canopy over the playground. Margaret Stokes said she can’t wait to bring her granddaughters “Our daughter says they’ll never want to go home once we get them here, it’s just awesome.

MAIL BAG Standing up for food inspection bacterial contamination is an actual and significant health threat. When it comes to pesticide residues on food, recent data from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency shows that about 88 per cent of all fresh food items and 90 per cent of processed food items contain no traces of pesticides at all. And in instances where trace amounts of pesticides are found on food, they are at such low levels it is impossible to imagine a way to eat enough of it for there to be any harmful impact whatsoever. Consumers can be assured that pesticides receive a greater breadth of scrutiny than any other regulated product in Canada. Health Canada, which is one of the most respected regulatory agencies in the world, undertakes a thorough scientific review and risk assessment of every pesticide before registering it for use, to ensure it does not pose a health risk to farmers using the

A SERVICE CAN EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR TRANSMISSION* ervicing your car’s automatic transmission regularly can dramatically extend its life, saving you money in the long run. That’s because the oil — or ATF — does more than just lubricate: It also helps drive the transmission. Damage to the fluid, such as oxidation and shear, will reduce the holding power of the clutches. This allows the clutches to slip and overheat, and quickly causes them to fail. New fluid restores the holding power between the clutches, reducing slip and heat production. At the same time, flushing the old fluid washes away tiny particles of clutch material and metal shavings. Those particles clog passages and wedge between moving parts, causing wear throughout the transmission. Changing the fluid eliminates those particles and the wear they cause. The net result of changing the fluid is to provide better lubrication, improved the holding ability of the friction components, and reduced heat. So your transmission works better for years longer, which means you’re less likely to face a major transmission repair. A complete transmission service should include:

I agree with a recent column in the Shuswap Market News that whether the food you eat is grown conventionally or organically, the most important thing is that you get the daily intake that’s recommended by Health Canada. However, the column did contain some misinformation that I would like to correct. Canada has one of the most modern and stringent pesticide regulatory systems in the world. This means that whether the food you eat is grown conventionally or organically, it is among the safest food available anywhere. Both organic and conventionally grown foods use an array of pesticides that have all been approved by Health Canada to control threats to their crops. No matter how your food is grown, what you should be more concerned about is how your food was handled before you bought it –

been assaulted from all sides. Pipeline opponents seized on Clark’s suggestion that a major oil spill might be tolerable if there was enough money in it for B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix picked up the theme as he conducted his own belated tour of the proposed route to reiterate his opposition. There had been earlier hints from Alberta that B.C. might need further rewards for the risk. But when Clark made the “fair share” demand public, Redford was moved to channel Margaret Thatcher, declaring: “The Premier of Alberta is not going to blink on royalties.” The lady’s not for blinking, but neither is B.C.’s Iron Snowbird, as Preston Manning dubbed Clark this spring. All this political theatre doesn’t amount to much. I’ll stand by my January prediction that the Enbridge proposal

bridge, a heavy oil spill from Second Narrows to Stanley Park would be catastrophic to Vancouver’s environment and economy. Tankers have made that trip safely nearly 100 years, but the congested modern shipping lane offers more threat of collision, and clearing Burrard Inlet for near-daily tanker transits would disrupt the rest of B.C.’s shipping trade. An Angus Reid poll last week showed as many as half of respondents remain openminded about the costs and benefits of new oil pipelines across B.C. Unlike B.C. politicians, they seem interested in learning more before making up their minds. Dix and the NDP ran to the front of the anti-pipeline parade early, as they did with the carbon tax and other issues. Clark began the Northern Gateway discussion with a principled position to wait for the result of the federal review, but that’s apparently out the window with an election looming. is unlikely to proceed, mainly due to the tangled state of aboriginal claims. Wealthy U.S. foundations that view the B.C. North Coast as their 500-year ecoexperiment will be happy to help fund a decade of legal challenges, while continuing the media-spinning and protest support they are doing now. Even if some way can be found to levy a B.C. tax on revenues from the Northern Gateway pipeline, it’s no solution. For one thing, it would confer an advantage to the TransMountain pipeline that has been shipping Alberta oil to Burnaby and the U.S. for more than 60 years. The competing expansion proposal by Trans-Mountain’s current owner, Kinder Morgan, shows the inconsistency of opposition to pipelines. Does anyone really believe that a new pipeline built to the highest standards ever would be too dangerous, while a 60-yearold pipeline is acceptable? Protesters have an easy target in Kinder Morgan. The B.C. Liberal government is taking its new hard-line approach to federal environmental hearings on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal in September. Environment Minister Terry Lake has filed the B.C. government’s notice to crossexamine Enbridge, one of the world’s biggest pipeline operators. Lake outlined the “tough questions” B.C. representatives will ask about spill response capacity on land and sea, tanker escort tugboats, pipe wall thickness, and Enbridge’s sluggish response to a pipeline rupture in Michigan. That’s all fine, and to be expected after Premier Christy Clark’s high-profile confrontation with Alberta Premier Alison Redford going into the recent premiers’ meeting in Halifax. Clark’s demands for “world-leading” safety and spill response, as well as meeting the constitutional obligation to consult and accommodate aboriginal groups along the route, are mostly a statement of the obvious. Her call for a “fair share” of proceeds from exported oil to reflect B.C.’s risk has

Right time to take a hike The Routes and Blues outreach program is upon us. Remember, if you have visitors in your home this week, this program is an excellent way for you to showcase the Shuswap and wow the folks who thought this place was just all about water and sand. “We’ll be sure to seek out the water at the end of the hikes, though,” say Shuswap Trail Alliance officials. The STA is hosting a hike every day of the week prior to the Roots and Blues Festival, which runs Friday, Aug. 17 to Sunday, Aug. 19. The series launched Thursday with an epic hike of the Enderby Cliffs. Splatsin Coun. Randy Williams, joined the group to paint the First Nations history and stories into the journey. • Day 2 – today, Friday, Aug. 10 is an equally special day, with a walk around Rosemund Lake in Mara, accompanied again by Coun.
Randy Williams. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this special place, which has very restricted access. We give sincere thanks to the local landowners, Splatsin nation, and B.C. Rec, Sites and Trails for granting us permission to visit this unique place the Shuswap Nation have called home for centuries. • Day 3 – Saturday includes a free water taxi shuttle from Seymour Arm to the Albas Falls beach. Come take a hike you may not have done for years, and learn more about the local flora, fauna, and First Nations significance of the area, with archeologist Celia Nord. • Day 4 – Sunday will explore the ridge above Blind Bay, with naturalist guide Trish Wallensteen. Take the long version or the short version of this local favorite hike. Bring a friend and spend the day journeying through the forest and popping out at
lookouts along the way. Learn about the fascinating history of the area, how the first settlers made a home here, the logging and farming industries, and the impact of the railway on the hills and valleys surrounding it. Learn about the native plants of the area, and hopefully catch a glimpse of the rare rubber boa or other endangered animals who call this place home. • Day 5 – Monday takes us on a unique walk through the Adams River salmon habitat with the Adams River Salmon Society and interpreter Celia Nord. Learn about the salmon, their life cycle and their river home. Also learn about the First Nations connection to the salmon, how the cycle of the fish shaped the rhythm of their lives, and the significance of this area to the First people. • Day 6 – Tuesday takes us to the eastern part of the Shuswap, where we journey through a very different
forest ecosystem and, with Coun. Randy Williams again, explore another part of the Splatsin traditional territory. Also, buff up on your railroad history, as we consider the location of the Last Spike, and what completion of the CP Rail line meant to the inhabitants of this area. • Day 7 – Wednesday rounds off the week in Salmon Arm, with a self-guided nature tour of the foreshore. Explore the Bay’s ecosystem with volunteer guides from Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society (SABNES), who will be situated along the way, eager to share their knowledge and love of the area. Check out the website (routesandblues.ca) for more information on the hikes. Pre-registration assists organizers with managing the numbers and is appreciated. Contact Carmen Massey, hike co-ordinator, at 250-835-8766 for more information.

Chase residents are planning to take action in hopes of bringing consistent and quality health care back to the community. Val Donnelly is one of the local residents organizing a day of protest in Chase, set for Aug. 14, in an attempt to get the attention of government. Donnelly has a lengthy background in the healthcare field, including a career as a paramedic and an emergency medical dispatcher. She was responsible for the start-up of the first responders in the North Shuswap and helped out with the South Shuswap. Donnelly is chair of a committee set up to help find solutions to what she considers a crisis. The Chase resident says she believes the village needs to break away from the primary health-care system, and instead focus on creating incentives to keep doctors in the area. Donnelly invites residents of Chase and surrounding areas to come down to the Chase Medical Centre anytime between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. She hopes to make council aware of their concerns and would like to work with them to find creative incentives to keep doctors in the area.

His team, the Norfolk Admirals, took the championship in June versus the Toronto Marleys. Jackson will be bringing the AHL’s Calder Cup home to Salmon Arm on Monday, Aug. 13. He’ll be at the Shaw Centre from 1 to 3 p.m. and invites his hometown to come for a visit and see the cup.

CHASE Moss, sun combo starts fire By Cavelle Layes MARKET NEWS STAFF
www.saobserver.net
Moss in a flower pot was the culprit in a fire Saturday at the old bowling alley building in Chase. The Chase Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 734 First Ave., after calls came in around 4 p.m. reporting a structure fire. Fire crews were notified of flames and a puff of smoke coming from the roof. Crews were able to locate the fire and quickly extinguish it. Chase Fire Chief Brent Chamberlain, said the fire was caused by external combustion after the sun caused moss in a flower pot to catch on fire. Chamberlain says the only damage to the building was a small hole burned through the roof where the pot had been sitting. “The crew had to make the hole a little bigger to determine there were no longer any flames inside the roof but that is the extent of the damage,” said Chamberlain.

Petro-Can heist unsuccessful “Smash and run” thieves smashed and ran, but ran away empty handed. The Chase Petro-Canada Gas Station fell victim to an attempted theft in the early morning hours of Aug. 2. While the thieves were not able to get away with anything, they were able to cause an extensive amount of damage. Chase RCMP report that two males dressed in dark clothing and faces covered were caught on a surveillance camera. The feed shows the thieves using a stolen pickup to smash through the win-
dow of the gas station before attempting to steal the ATM inside by using a rope hooked up to a truck. The thieves attempted to use the truck to drag the ATM out of the gas station but were unsuccessful as it was cemented to the floor. They soon fled the scene empty handed, abandoning the stolen truck on VLA Road. RCMP have since seized the truck and it is being examined by the Kamloops Forensic Identification Section for evidence. This is the second breakin that has occurred at the

Suspects in Pritchard home invasion arrested
CAVELLE LAYES/MARKET NEWS
Sunwest Tours Ltd.
A 911 call led police to a home invasion in Pritchard. Chase RCMP report that the call came from a residence on Martin Creek Road in Pritchard about 1 a.m. on Aug. 1. Upon arrival, police saw a vehicle fleeing the scene. An ATV was also spotted attempting to leave, but police were able to stop the off-road vehicle being driven by a female. The police investigation revealed that two males and one female had forced their way into the residence while the male owner was at home. He had been sleeping when the suspects entered the house and they proceeded to
assault him before fleeing. During the assault, the victim managed to call 911. The female suspect was arrested at the scene and charged with breaking, entering and committing an assault causing bodily harm, impaired driving, and failing to provide a breath sample. Chase RCMP received information on Aug. 2 regarding the location of one of the male suspects, allowing officers to arrest the suspect without incident in his residence in the area. Just after midnight on Aug. 2, police were able to locate and arrest the second male suspect, again without incident.

Season sizzles in Seymour
The Heat may have discovered a new gold rush of talent in the large contingent of participants from the Cariboo. With legendary coach Brad Fox’s assurance, the hopefuls stayed on task from his opening remarks to the game by game events. A few unlucky individuals found out what happens when you stray from the rules. Months of preparation by Fox ensured that all necessary details were taken care of for those attending. So what’s next? The lucky “hot products” were invited back to pre-season just three weeks away. Final decisions will be made as to who fills out the 23player roster then. Lackadaisical veterans may find themselves on the outside looking in as the competition for the small number of jobs was fast and furious. The Heat has learned a lot from its first year in the KIJHL and that knowledge will bring players of ability and good character who want a tremendously worthwhile experience. Watch for more on upcoming Junior A and B exhibition games and a golf tournament. Summer has warmed up and so has the Heat.

The long weekend was hot and torrid inside the confines of the Art Holding Memorial Arena in Chase, as the community-based Heat Junior Hockey Club held their main camp. From the morning of Thursday, Aug. 2 to Sunday, Aug. 5, more than 90 hopefuls displayed their talents for watchful coaches, scouts and fans. The young athletes from throughout B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan, received a ton of ice time. Many family members tagged along with the hopefuls, the Shuswap being a magnet for summer fun. Sunburns were mixed with sweat and exhaustion. For those hesitant to send their young men off to Chase, the weather and hospitality convinced them it’s ‘the’ place to play Junior B hockey. City slickers were informed of the advantages of their sons playing in a small town with the abundant ice time, adoring fans and huge community spirit. Where else can you hit the ice, hit the water, play a round, attend a festival and be in a parade all in the same day? Happy campers stayed with friends, or in cabins, motels, rv’s and billets.

Of course the fine sandy beach is always an attraction at Seymour Arm, a destination for many houseboaters visiting the area. With high temperatures in the 30s, the weather was perfect for the fun filled weekend, deemed a big success, even though crowds seemed a little thin compared to previous years.

SYME, DAVID Dave Syme passed away peacefully at Hillside Village Salmon Arm the morning of July 31st, 2012 at the age of 93. Dave was born into the pioneer family of John and Elizabeth Syme in Kippen , Scotland May 9th, 1919. In 1926 Dave came with the family to homestead in the Mt. Ida district of Salmon Arm. There he grew up with brothers, Tom, Jock, Jim, Alan and sister Betty. Growing up on the farm produced a strong determined and multi talented young man. In the early years he worked on threshing crews and various other tasks. Dave also became an accomplished ball player and was known as the “hurler” on the team. Dave’s mechanical talents got him a job at Shiscan Motors and later a job with the Dept. of Highways as a heavy duty mechanic. He retired from the Dept. of Highways in 1980 after 25 years. Dave and Evelyn had a full retirement with golf at the Salmon Arm Golf Course becoming a huge part of their lives. They also bowled, gardened, curled and travelled. Their travels took them to Scotland and his birth place, along with Reno and Southern California. Dave continued to golf into his late 80’s. Evelyn’s declining health resulted in her admission to Hillside Village in 2008 followed by Dave’s admission in 2009 due to his declining health. Dave is survived by his wife of 58 years Evelyn, daughter Lorraine (Don), sons Brian and Doug (Andrea), grandchildren Leigh (Jill) Byrd, James Byrd, Danielle (Andrew) Rosenberger Edison Syme, Harlan Syme and great-grandaughters Brooklyn and Ciarra Rosenberger and Alaina Byrd, brother Alan (Marg) Syme, Brother-in-law Hans (Bonnie) Kusisto and numerous nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his sister Betty and brothers Tom, Jock, Jim and infant grandson Dustin. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Hillside Village especially Cottage 4. A memorial service will be held at the Mount Ida Hall on August 18th, 2012 at 2:00 pm. E-mail condolence can be sent through Dave’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com

ROETERS, HANK Gone Fishin! With broken hearts we said good-bye to Hank Roeters; we regret to announce his sudden passing at the age 57 in Revelstoke , BC on July 22, 2012. Hank was born July 14, 1955 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. His family immigrated to Kamloops in 1959 later moving to Silver Creek, Salmon Arm and then Sicamous. Left to cherish Hank’s memories are his loving spouse Barbara Birch, daughters: Jennifer (Megan), Rebecca (Jason) and son Oliver (Amanda) Roeters. Mother Corrie, Sister Lia and brothers: Al (Terry), James (Margret), Jack (Linda), John (Shawnde), Brian (JoAnn) Roeters. Hank was predeceased by his father Henry and brother Gerry Roeters. Hank leaves behind six grandchildren and one great grandson. Hank was a dedicated and hard working employee for Poncho Holding’s Revelstoke, Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club/Grooming Society Sicamous , L Turner , Tappen, Gary Collins Logging, Quesnel, Receiver Transport, Revelstoke and owner operator for J.O.B Enterprise, Cambie , BC. Hank was a “Jack of all trades”. If he couldn’t do it or fix it, you were in big trouble. He had passion for singing and playing the guitar, horses, hunting, gardening and most of all fishing on the Shuswap. Hank was a rough tough man however we would see the tender side playing with their puppy Angel. Hank wanted people to know he was “Real” and not a “Saint” when he died. His favorite passage was Proverbs 16:9. Times haven’t always been the easiest for his family. It was about sticking together and being there for each other. Being grateful, living in the moment and focusing on what is really important. He was a loving spouse, best father ever and no matter what life brings we were lucky to have his Strength, Wisdom and Love. A special “Thank you!” to all the people who attended his funeral and all the beautiful flowers and cards received. Also to Bowers Funeral Home and Crematorium for walking us through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Sicamous Bible Church or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Funeral Service was held at the Sicamous Bible Church on July 28, 2012. Email condolences may be sent through Hank’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com

Head Girl of her school, she obtained a scholarship to London University, graduating with an Honours degree in History. She came to Canada to study for a Master’s degree in History on scholarship at UBC. Aileen was very active with the theatre at UBC and worked as a professional actress for a year and wrote radio dramas for CBC, before marrying her soldier husband, Michael Gentles, in 1962. She lectured at the University of Calgary and Queen’s University in Canadian history. Aileen was a wonderful wife and a wonderful mother to her daughters Cynthia and Kate. Aileen relished the military postings all over Canada and Germany, and created beautiful gardens wherever she called home. Throughout her life she continued her work with theatre, writing, directing and acting and also singing in several choirs. She wrote four musicals, directing each. She wrote choral music, conducted choirs and wrote several plays for the theatre and outdoor theatre, all hugely successful. Aileen founded the renowned Monashee Chamber Choir in the Shuswap. Much admired and loved she will leave a gap in our hearts. Aileen weakened by cancer treatments and Parkinson’s Disease, passed away after a short illness of pneumonia on Monday the 30th of July. The funeral for Aileen was held at St. John’s Anglican Church, Salmon Arm at 1:30 pm on Tuesday the 7th of August. A reception at the Gentles’ house followed the funeral. Online condolences can be sent through Aileens’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice. com Funeral arrangements are in the care of Bowers Funeral Service, Salmon Arm, BC

Local food trend gains momentum The cachet of eating locally grown food hit home for me after a recent visit to New York City. Our son was working there and we had a chance to visit on his birthday which called for a special celebration. Of the myriad of fine restaurants he could have chosen, he chose Blue Hill in trendy Soho. It is a one-star Michelin restaurant, which means very high standards. Blue Hill is famous not only due to a recent visit specifically requested by President Barack Obama, but for sourcing most of its food seasonally and locally from their own farm in Connecticut. When experiencing fine dining, it is expected that the server brings the wine to the table and explains the virtues of that particular vintage. For Blue Hill, I was surprised when servers came out with whole parsnips attractively displayed on a platter to show guests the vegetables from the farm and eloquently explain the type of parsnip and how it was used in the cuisine. This continued throughout the meal with presentations of other local ingredients like eggs and cheese. I was delighted that local food had reached
LIVING WELL this level of attention but local food is much more than a trend – it benefits our environment, our economy, and has social/cultural and nutritional benefits as well. Most greenhouse gases produced in agriculture come from the inputs required to grow, process and transport food. On average, about seven per cent can be attributed to transportation. Buying local food in season and organically whenever possible creates less greenhouse gases. The economic benefits are even more compelling. More money stays in the community and support for local agriculture creates local jobs. More jobs in agriculture helps to make it a more attractive and sustainable profession and this, in turn, can reduce our reliance on imported food. The social and cultural benefits of local food are often not as easily recognized. Some of the fondest memories my children and I have are growing and harvesting our gar-
den. I will never forget the pride I saw as they held up a bunch of carrots or the excitement – equal to finding treasure – when they dug up potatoes. In addition, our First Nations traditional local foods are steeped in custom and culture. Finally, the longer fruit and vegetables can be kept in the field
and then picked at their peak, the better the nutritional content. Fresh fruits and vegetables at their peak taste better too – you can’t beat juicy warm tomatoes off the vine, or a fresh pod of raw peas. So enjoy and support local food whether you grow it yourself, buy it locally, or ask that local food be included at your favorite restaurant.
