A former provincial heritage minister is irate after the Royal B.C. Museum backed out of an agreement to exhibit evidence that, if true, would upend B.C.’s history books. For the past three years, Sam Bawlf has been lobbying the government to digitize and display a Molyneux globe, a 415-year-old map created after Sir Francis Drake’s voyage around the world from 1577 to 1580. The Downtown Victoria Business Association is inviting professionals and amateurs alike to create a unique mosaic mural. As part of the association’s Art History
150 project, artist Steve Milroy designed a scaled version of the mural, Justice. He then split the art into 120 individual two-foot-by-two-foot panels, which will be presold for $50 and can be painted by the donor – or assigned to an artist – creating a unique mosaic. “This project is about working to create a sense of community while increasing the visual appeal of the downtown,” association general manager Ken Kelly said in a statement. Once complete, the mural will be installed at 533 Chatham St. “I’ve never done a mural mosaic, but it
probably won’t be my last,” said Milroy, who also runs Wonderworks. Donors who contribute to the project will be honoured by name on a bronze plaque affixed to the mural. All money collected goes toward the project’s production costs. Donation brochures are available at the DVBA office at 20 Centennial Sq., or at the artist space at 17 Market Square which people can visit on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in August. New approach at Fairfield United aims to bring community together
Hesjedal celebration includes parade The community is invited to a welcome home party today (Aug. 10) and celebration of competitive cyclist Ryder Hesjedal’s victory in the Giro D’Italia back in May. The Belmont secondary grad has been in Europe since scoring his big win and recently finished midpack in the Olympic road race and time trial events. The parade from the Victoria Marriott hotel starts at 3:30 p.m. and travels along Government Street to Centennial Square. Activities there include a red carpet arrival, conversation with Hesjedal, his family and coaches and a Q & A with the audience. The event runs until 6:30 p.m.

Fluttering in a light breeze coming up Moss Street from the Strait of Juan de Fuca, a collection of colourful ribbons attached to a net beside Fairfield United Church features a variety of personal messages. “Be the happiness you wish for your family, friends and enemies,” says one. “Save every animal in the whole wide world,” says another. A few strips over, “For all people suffering from mental illness.” Still another message has a simple, yet powerful phrase: “Peace on Earth.” While many have been written by members of the congregation, many have not. It’s part of the church’s extending a hand to the greater community, says student minister Beth Walker, who is nearing the end of a nine-week contract at Fairfield United. “We’ve been looking at ways of building bridges and reaching out into the community, and what it would be like to be the spiritual heart of Fairfield,” Walker says. Well aware of the problem of declining attendance at traditional churches, she wrote up a proposal for doing things differently. The United Church presbytery in Victoria liked her ideas and placed her in charge of ministering at Fairfield, whose pastor had served his requisite two and a half year term and moved on. “The idea was ‘being’ church instead of ‘doing’ church,” Walker says. “When you be, you open up to new possibilities.” That has meant embracing new ways of relating to people in the neighbourhood. The prayer net, installed last month – just before thousands of visitors trooped past for the TD Art Gallery Paint-In – was offered as a way for people to connect with the church, even if they weren’t regular attendees. “I would say it was the litmus test to the congregation of

We’re into peace. It’s the ultimate communication – if you want to look at it like Facebook, it’s saying ‘come down and see what people care about.’” Going hand in hand with this change of approach for the church is the Spirited Summer Series. Speakers from Victoria social service agencies PEERS, Our Place and Bridges for Women, and the Fairfield-Gonzales Community Association were recruited to talk during Sunday morning services about their organizations’ roles. “People are looking for a sense of community and they are craving community. That’s something the church can offer,” Walker says. “This church is seeming to want to lead a call to social justice. I think we’ve stopped talking and now we’re starting to listen, by bringing folks in and telling stories of what

they’re doing in the world.” Karen Aitken, chair of the church council at Fairfield United, says attendance usually dwindles in summer due to holidays and other activities. The opposite has been the case of late at the corner of Fairfield Road and Moss Street, however, with more people showing up for Sunday service. “That’s a big bonus for us,” she says. “I think people are still thinking about spirituality. (With the prayer net) we’re saying, ‘hey, we’re just like you guys. We all have wishes and prayers for the world.’” Whether the boost in attendance is due to the net or the adjusted summer schedule is uncertain, Aitken says, but it’s been a nice coincidence. “Doing something different usually draws people.” This Sunday’s service includes a talk from James Pratt with the community association. Aitken encourages visitors to bring their coffee mug, as the pot is on before and after the service.

Police are still looking for details around the movements of a woman found dead in Esquimalt last Friday. VicPD and the B.C. Coroners Service identified Nadine Janice Marshall, 48, of Victoria, as the person whose body was found at 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 3 in an area behind the Archie Browning Sports Centre. Detectives are looking to speak with anyone who may have had contact, or knew the whereabouts of Marshall from Thursday night, Aug. 2, to the early morning hours of Aug. 3. “There was no obvious signs of trauma,” said VicPD spokesman Mike Tucker, adding that police consider the death suspicious. “It wasn’t evident that this death occurred from natural causes.” The body was found in the lot behind the arena, towards Lyall Street. Despite suspicions about the cause of death, police say there appears to be no risk to the public. Third-generation Esquimalt resident Lorne Argyle has uncovered a miniature piece of the township’s history. For the past 35 years, the last of six complete miniature houses sat untouched in the workshop of his uncle, Gordon Hodgson. “Uncle Gordie was always dragging us down there, show-
ing us his latest project,” Argyle said. Hodgson, now deceased, and his wife, Kay, began creating miniature houses in the 1970s modelled on family and fictional homes. Four of those houses are permanently on display at Miniature World, while the fifth is in Kay’s hometown at the Metchosin Museum. Argyle and his aunt decided to commemorate the township’s centennial by dusting off the sixth relic and displaying it at the Esquimalt Regional Library until Sept. 15. Argyle estimates the model weighs at least 300 pounds. “All Auntie Kay would say is,
‘it’s heavy. Your uncle made it strong, he made everything strong,’” he said. Each intricate piece of furniture was whittled from oldgrowth cedar, while the house is made from a fir base. The cedar-shingled, composite house is based on a house at 1219 Carlisle St., built in 1906-07 by Samuel and Louise Hodgson, Gordon’s parents. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Suspected thief in bank robbery nabbed on Gorge A 58-year-old Victoria man was arrested Monday on suspicion of robbing the RBC bank at 1079 Douglas St. on Saturday. The suspect was arrested without incident at around 8:30 p.m. inside a Subway restaurant in the 400-block of Gorge Rd. E. Police also recovered evidence from the robbery. Just after 3 p.m. on Aug. 4, a robber entered the bank, demanded money from the teller, then fled on foot. Police used a detailed description to track down the suspect. If Drake was the first European to reach this part of North America, as Bawlf claims, it could fundamentally alter aboriginal land treaties throughout the coastal areas. Many First Nations claims rely on agreements made after Cook’s 1778 arrival. “When you move that date by 200 years, it’s very significant,� Bawlf said. He added it would be impossible for such accurate detail to be depicted on Molyneux’s globe without direct observation of the coastline by someone who was familiar with latitude and compass bearings. “For the RBCM to present the globe without this information would amount to deliberate suppression of the case for Drake’s explorations, presentation of which had been the whole purpose of the project from the outset,� he said. Bawlf’s theory has yet to gain a foothold in common history, but has been praised by several established geographical scholars. In response to Bawlf’s

But without RBCM support, the federal government has backed out of the agreement as well. “So now we have the money sitting there ... and we just
want to get on with it,� Bawlf said, adding the remaining $15,000 has been put up by a private business. In a statement, Chong’s office confirmed $15,000 had been issued and said the RBCM would “assist Mr. Bawlf in his project to digitize and to bring the globe to Victoria in the future.�
Bawlf wants the province to intervene and force the museum to present both the globe and his evidence, but the ministry did not indicate it would take further action. “The public have a right to know what happened to the project ... we’ve hit a wall,� Bawlf said. dpalmer@vicnews.com

A trio of celebrations and long-weekend festivities attracted thousands to Victoria for the B.C. Day holiday and helped keep Victoria police busy. With the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations happening alongside Symphony Splash and the Victoria Electronic Music Festival, police received 750 calls to their
911 communications centre between Friday and early Tuesday morning. “This was one of our busiest weekends on record and taxed our policing capabilities to the maximum,� said acting chief John Ducker. Victoria police estimate 50,000 people attended the Symphony Splash and upwards of 10,000 attended the two-day electronic music event at Centennial Square. On Saturday night, police
responded to many incidents in the square, making several arrests for public intoxication, fights, warrants and breaches. Paramedics and hospitals also dealt with multiple overdoses. “We are collecting reports and other information to examine our responses to the weekend, and also so that we can highlight to our police board our experiences with the effects of high-profile public events this summer,� Ducker said.
Pocket dials also took up officers time. On Aug. 4 there were 110 abandoned 911 calls in a 12-hour period. “That has to be one of the largest numbers we’ve seen in that period of time,â€? said Mike Tucker, VicPD communications co-ordinator. “It is something that’s tying up a lot of our resources for sure ‌ These are calls that have to be investigated and followed up on.â€? cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.com

Athletes’ legacy within community It’s been a tough year for a few of Victoria’s highprofile athletes. After winning the Giro D’Italia and solidifying his place as Canada’s premier cyclist, Ryder Hesjedal crashed out of the Tour de France, and middle-of-the pack outcomes in the Olympic road race and time trial, and no medals. Last Saturday, 22-year-old Paula Findlay showed grit, fighting injuries to finish the women’s triathlon in last place in a time of 2:12:09. That’s still a blistering pace. Consider that the female winner of the Victoria Subaru Olympic-distance triathlon came in at 2:28:07. Her performance and subsequent apology set off a firestorm of controversy. Fellow triathlete Simon Whitfield came to her defence, criticizing Triathlon Canada and Findlay’s coach for giving her poor guidance in recovering from a hip injury. Then on Tuesday, Whitfield, the pride of Victoria as Canada’s Olympic flag bearer, crashed early in his race, ending his Olympic career in a way he, and the nation, never imagined. But athletes like Hesjedal, Findlay and Whitfield – not to mention medal winners men’s eight rowing, track cyclist Gillian Carleton and swimmer Ryan Cochrane – will continue to be local heroes and continue to exemplify the Olympic spirit. The legacy of our local athletes doesn’t hinge on medals, but how they give back to the community. Whitfield has raised thousands for KidSport Victoria and mentors up-and-coming competitive triathletes. Hesjedal’s success spurred the Tour de Victoria and the Ryder’s Cycling Society of Canada to promote cycling locally and across the country. Athletes such as Findlay and Carleton and rowers Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee are mentoring the next generation of young women in their disciplines, and will continue to be superb athletes to be reckoned with on the world stage. Victoria is home, or the adopted home, of 32 athletes on this year’s Canadian Olympic team. With institutions like Commonwealth Place, the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence and the national team rowing facility at Elk Lake, these athletes will continue to train and inspire youth to stay fit and healthy, to push their limits and strive to be the best in the world. We can be proud of what our Olympians have achieved in London, but the Games come and go. The impact of local athletes will be felt in the Greater Victoria community for years to come. However, it’s another thing entirely to use your company’s profits to finance groups whose sole objective is to deny equal rights to a portion of the population that includes some of your employees and customers. That’s boycottworthy. I realistically don’t expect to change anyone’s stance on gay marriage with this column. Your views, like mine, are founded in each of our upbringings and our understandings of our social and political environments. But I, like many, should thank Cathy for coming out and publicly stating his position on such a divisive issue – even if it makes no sense for a businessman to wade into the discussion. Instead of wasting 99 per cent of this complex and useful non-renewable chemical mix, we could use more of it to make everything from bicycle tires and computer keyboards to heart valves and artificial limbs. And surely we can even find more efficient and less polluting ways to use it for fuel. A rational energy strategy – one that benefits Canadians more than multinational corporations and the repressive regime in China – would recognize the value of our limited resources not just for fuel and products but as a way to generate steady revenue to help us shift to renewable energy. What would such a strategy look like? It’s already too late to stop
global warming, but we can contribute to making it less severe. That means shifting away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible. Canada would have to reduce its emissions by 80 per cent from 1990 levels by 2050 to do its part to avoid dangerous warming over 2° C. Instead of doubling oil sands production, we need to reduce the energy we get from fossil fuels by more than 70 per cent. The target is possible if we transform our energy system over the next 40 years, according to the Trottier Energy Futures Project, a joint effort between the David Suzuki Foundation and the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Renewable energy use would have to double. Energy production from nonhydro renewables such as wind, solar, and biomass would have to increase 150 times from today’s levels. We would also have to make our country 50 per cent more energy efficient.
LETTERS Olympic pageantry is over-the-top On the eve of my eighth decade, I am contemplating the spectacular performances and events at the current Olympic Games. Fleetingly, my thoughts return to Games of long ago, when all were amateurs (e.g. Chariots of Fire) and the great names included Owens, Zatopek, Nuurmi, Haag, etc. Champions all. Today our world is in a chaotic state. Desperate human needs are being thwarted by a lack of funds, we are told (let them eat cake). Coincidentally, extravagant and garish opening and closing Olympic ceremonies – likely for
commercial profit – belie this sickening refrain. Public liability is the likely cost (remember Montreal in 1976?). It reminds one of Nero fiddling while Rome burned. What has all this showmanship to do with athletic excellence and prowess? Certainly, all praise to the athletes, and huge congratulations to medal winners, but please, cut the cost of the carnivals. Has greed and crass commercialism become the raison d’être, even at Olympic Games? Spoil sport? No, create simple, sensible priorities. Stephen Lamb Victoria

Although the 2007 plan Redford and her fellow leaders hope to build on mentions renewable energy and climate change, it doesn’t offer the bold vision needed to realize the many benefits – and the necessity – of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Pipeline won’t be imposed: Harper Tom Fletcher Black Press
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has rejected suggestions his government is considering pushing through the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline across northern B.C. Harper was asked about Enbridge Inc.’s pipeline project in Vancouver on Tuesday, and the accusation that he has already decided it is in the national interest for it to proceed. “I’ve been very clear that decisions on these kinds of projects are made through an independent evaluation conducted by scientists into the economic costs and risks that are associ-
ated with the project,” he said. “I think that’s the only way governments can handle controversial projects of this manner, to ensure that things are evaluated on an independent basis, scientifically, and not simply on political criteria.” Harper told reporters he has spoken with B.C. Premier Christy Clark and other premiers about pipelines, but those conversations are private. It’s his first public comment since a dispute erupted between Clark and Alberta Premier Alison Redford in July over Clark’s demand for more revenues. “I’m not going to get into an argument or discussion about how we divide hypothetical reve-
nues,” Harper said. He did emphasize that in general, it is important for Canada to diversify its trade and open up new markets in Asia. The federal government is planning “huge investments” to improve environmental protection for shipping resource material, but it won’t favour any individual project, he said. Kinder Morgan hopes to twin its existing oil pipeline from Alberta to port and refinery facilities in Burnaby, to transport more heavy oil from the Athabasca oil sands. Body found off Oak Bay is that of young canoeist The B.C. Coroners Service has confirmed the body found in the water off Oak Bay on Sunday is a young Saanich canoeist who went missing in July. The body of Iman Bulghani, 19, was found by kayakers on Aug. 6 floating near Tod Island, just south of where he was last seen exactly one month ago. A
police marine unit recovered his body. On July 6, a Bulghani went missing and was presumed drowned after he and a friend tried to canoe to Discovery Island in the late evening, and didn’t bring life jackets. Their canoe was swamped and it capsized near Ten Mile

Jailed teens share insider stories through graphic novel Book offers insights and warnings Natalie North News staff
Veterans of youth detention, teens who have lived on both sides of Victoria Youth Custody Centre’s walls, are sharing their wisdom in an effort to keep other young people out of jail. Six youth in custody contributed to a graphic novel based on personal experiences – their hopes, fears and challenges as they attempt to successfully transition back into society. “We took kids who were in the system quite a bit to share their insider knowledge to other youth who are new to the system,” said project co-ordinator Kate Creedon, a counsellor at the custody centre. “The ones who are in and out are experts in what to
do and what not to do because they’ve lived it for years.” Creedon was a graduate student researching youth transitioning out of custody through the University of Victoria’s Centre for Youth and Society during the creation of the graphic novel. In and Out follows ‘Corey’ as he violates his probation, re-enters the custody centre, builds a relationship on the outside and fights pressure to reoffend. The story is based on the experiences youth who were successful in transitioning out of custody – a process they agreed was reliant on establishing new, healthy relationships, connecting to school or training programs and finding employment. But with incarcerated youth in B.C. reading at an average Grade 4 level, job prospects are dim. The 76 per cent recidivism rate in the province is closely correlated to their literacy skills, Creedon said.

As Creedon helped the teens identify which ideas they wanted most to impart on new offenders, some would stop short of writing on the white board for fear of demonstrating weak language skills in front of their peers. “We just talked about (how) we were trying to educate people about literacy and take the shame out of it. They were willing to work through that together and be patient with each other and write as a team.” The words are paired with illustrations by Meghan Bell, a former employee of the Centre for Youth and Society, a research centre that promotes the health and well-being of youth. The centre regularly disseminates research through a variety of mediums, including visual art and video, with the aim of making knowledge accessible to those who will make decisions and act on it, said Tricia Roche, manager
of research and community partnerships for the centre. “(We) wouldn’t have been satisfied with the knowledge sitting on a shelf in the library,” Roche said. The youth who participated can’t be identified or contacted for interviews, but have submitted 100 per cent positive written feedback on the project. “It was cool because it was real kids talking about real stuff,” wrote one youth. “It was cool people trusted us to do this,” wrote another. For Creedon, the steps, from pitching the project to celebrating its completion with a group viewing of graphic novel-inspired film X-Men, didn’t come easily. “It was one of the hardest groups that I’ve done,” she said. “I was so proud of my kids for completing this and working through the challenges and being patient with the process and I’m thrilled that the community is so inter-

Von Hagen says her lengthy resumé of experience on stage has helped ease her mind from those first few shows in Victoria, Vancouver and Toronto. “I no longer have that fear that I’m going to die or it’s going to be a nightmare. I remember a time where I would be phoning in for spots and I would be upset if I
didn’t get a spot and I was horrified if I did, because I knew I would have to go do it,” she says. Stand-up comedy remains an “old boys’ club,” she says, though she doesn’t understand why that is. “There’s still a lot of people, men and women, who see a woman get on stage and get put off,” she says. “And periodically you hear, ‘there’s no funny women.’ That doesn’t make sense. You’ve never had a funny aunt or wife? Your girlfriend has never made you laugh? Richard Wong is an artist, and no one is more surprised by it than the artist himself. Now 58, he picked up a paint brush for the first time in early 2011. “My partner Jackie (Swan) asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said, ‘maybe a sketch pad.’ I don’t know why I even said that.” The water colour kit sat unopened for a while, then Wong registered for an art class at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre. “One of the first water colours I painted was a hut. Then when I painted behind it, I just touched the hut with the water and it disappeared. It was very frustrating. I almost quit,” he said. Instead, he signed up for Chinese brush lessons with Kileasa Wong, the foremost teacher of traditional Chinese painting in Victoria. At the end of his second session of classes the instructor told him his work was “good enough to sell.” “That just planted a seed in me,” he said. From there Wong, who has lived in Esquimalt for seven years, dove into the art world,

He’ll be among the artists at the arts festival in Esquimalt. expanding his horizons with Western brush technique and showing his work at the Victoria Look Show. “I was very apprehensive about it,” said Wong. “I was not quite sure I was ready.” During the show he was approached by Greater Victoria Community Arts Council president Bob Williams, who asked him to join the board. “I’m like: ‘say what?’ Those things don’t happen to me.” Wong joined the board in May. He was resident artist at Abkhazi Gardens and artist in residence at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites in July where he taught an introduction to Chinese Brush
Painting workshop. “It was fun. It was over capacity with people who wanted to take the class. I was taken by surprise. I thought, I’ve just started to learn and here I am standing in front of a crowd,” he said with awe in his voice. After a 25-year career in the ministry of environment, Wong retired in 2009. Up until his unusual request for a sketch pad he “didn’t have an artistic bone” in his body, but now gets great pleasure from creating his fusion of eastern and western methods. “As long as I’m painting and I continue to be enjoying it and satisfied, I’ll keep going,” said Wong. The public can meet Wong and see him work at the Esquimalt Arts Festival on Aug. 12. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the English Inn and Resort, 429 Lampson St. Painters, photographers, musicians, carvers and other local artists will be displaying and demonstrating their art. n a unique turn of events, a married couple will cruise Vancouver Island as part of the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. Const. Dorothy Junio, the Oak Bay police school resource officer, will tackle the Tour de Rock alongside husband Const. Jett Junio of Saanich police. They are the first married couple “You only get to to take part in the do it once and do it Canadian Cancer together …” Society fundraiser. “You only get to do – Const. Dorothy Junio it once and to do it together …,” Dorothy began. “It’s a unique opportunity for sure,” Jett finished. “We have the luxury of debriefing everything we do from work to riding because we’re on the same page.” They also share in fundraising responsibilities and aside from police work, in a local business as well. Jett returns to the Saanich police ranks in January after an 18-month leave to run Riders Cycles, a bicycle business on Cloverdale Avenue that the couple purchased a year ago. The Island-wide ride, Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, developed from those events in the mid-1990s. “We knew the event (in Edmonton) was raising funds for kids with cancer, but the magnitude didn’t hit us until we got here,” Jett said. “The fever we didn’t feel until we got to the Island,” Dorothy added. “The whole Island embracing it is amazing.” With their kids, Adam and Ethan hitting 16 and 17 this year, they felt an opportunity to make a commitment to the cause. Plus it’s a year of milestones for the pair; both turned 50, celebrated 25 years of policing and it’s the 15th year of the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. Then there’s the illness itself. Dorothy’s mom developed cancer (she’s faring well right now), and suddenly they saw it throughout their peers. “It became a big deal,” Dorothy said. The biggest hurdles won’t be the kilometres-long hills or rainy days spent on a bike. “It’s going to be the emotions,” Dorothy said. “You sometimes have to battle that along with the physical.” As for the highs, just participating and seeing people dig deep to give is already providing those. “The ride itself is secondary,” Jett said. “It’s a vehicle to reach out to people for a greater cause: the kids.”

Facebook connections are rebuilding a home for boy monks in Bhutan, thanks to a pair of Oak Bay women and a Victoria gaming company. In September 2011, 32 monks were left homeless after the 300-year-old Chetokha monastery was damaged in an earthquake. Relief started well before the shaker, though Chris Hoyer and Carla Funk, both of Oak Bay, didn’t know it at the time. They took a photographic journey to the remote Himalayan country in 2008 and had shot many of the young men who later

were left struggling without shelter. “We had a wonderful time and the people are so friendly,” Hoyer said. A member of the tour group, Vancouverbased photographer Jamie Kowal, set up a website to sell donated photos to raise money for the monastery. “This is a great example of how versatile online fundraising can be,” Funk said. “The contributing photographers live across Canada and the U.S., yet were able to upload their photos for sale to the website. We spread the word through our email and Facebook connections. We had orders from as far away as Switzerland.” Sonam Dema, of Bhutan, alerted Hoyer to the plight of the monks through a message on Facebook. “The monastery is in a remote area, close to where my family lives, and these five- to 12-year-old boys were left living in makeshift tents, with the Himalayan winter coming on. I sent out a message to all my contacts on Facebook and I have been astonished by the great response,” Dema said. “We were able to buy the boys warm jackets and blankets to help them through the worst of the winter.” Also via Facebook, the Oak Bay women connected with GameHouse Canada, which created an online game to raise funds for the monastery. “We run many different games throughout the year, and we create several especially to raise money for different charities,” explained Marc Dugas, producer at GameHouse Canada.

The boys should be properly housed this winter,

It took the entire junior B provincial lacrosse tournament, but the Saanich Tigers got their win and a bronze medal. The Kamloops Venom won gold, beating the Delta Islanders 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. Earlier on Sunday, the Tigers enjoyed its only win of the four-game, four-team tournament held at Bear Mountain Arena, with a 7-3 defeat of host Westshore Bears. Reborn as a franchise last year by coach Chris Jackson, the Tigers won the Pacific
Northwest Junior Lacrosse League playoffs in July in series wins over the Peninsula Warriors and Cowichan Valley Thunder. The Bears earned a bye as hosts while the Venom and Islanders entered as the respective champions of the Thompson Okanagan and West Coast junior leagues. Kamloops went undefeated and qualified for the Founders Cup national championship held in Six Nations, Ont. next week, Aug. 14 to 19. Leading the Tigers in scoring in the bronze-medal game on Sunday was Saanich captain Ethan Garland with three goals, two of them into an empty net at the end of the game. Clutch goals from Quinton Hamilton and Craig King kept the Tigers in it, while goalkeeper Jared Jackson was
named the Tigers’ MVP of the game with 33 saves. Nolan Ryan, Sam Chiasson and Kelly Schiarizza each scored once for the Bears. The Bears named Tristan Calve their MVP for his hustle. The Bears had defeated the Tigers 11-8 in the first game of the tournament on Friday morning.
B.C. doubles at nationals Thirteen-year-old Elle Hamilton of Langford was the only player on home soil as Team B.C. won the girls bantam lacrosse nationals at Bear Mountain Arena, July 29 to Aug. 3. B.C. defeated Ontario 4-3 in the gold medal final, a rematch of Ontario’s 4-3 overtime win in their round robin match.
Wipeout won’t keep Simon down: Olympic wrap News staff
Simon Whitfield’s early morning wipeout on Tuesday should go down as a minor blip in his glorious triathlon career. But for now, it’s drawing a lot of national attention. Perhaps too much. The 37-year-old Victoria resident, who already has a gold and silver from the 2000 and 2008 Games, crashed his bike immediately out of the first transition of the London 2012 men’s triathlon. The resulting injuries forced him to withdraw from the event. “Not how I envisioned this chapter ending,” Whitfield said through Triathlon Canada. “It’s been a remarkable Olympic journey, more than I could have ever imagined. I’ve had two incredible Olympics, one not really good (Athens 2004) and then this.” Fellow Victoria-based triathletes Kyle Jones (1:49:58) and Brent McMahon (1:50:03) finished 25th and 27th, while Great Britain’s Alistair Brownlee, who was the favourite, won gold in a time of one hour, 46 minutes and 25 seconds. Even with the crushing blow of dropping out, Whitfield’s outlook hasn’t strayed from a month ago, when he said medal or no medal, he’d be playing in a London park with his kids on Wednesday. “I’ve got some stitches, my knees are sore, my collar bone hurts, but all in all I’ll be out in the park.”

Prior to departing, Jennerich blogged a fiery statement, one which largely went unnoticed. “I feel that so many believe we are just some second choice (team) ... Well frankly, I’m sick of it and I’m done listening to those opinions.” Jennerich, 29, continued by standing up for Obee, 20, who she felt was deserving of greater respect going into the Games. Baart, a St. Michaels University School student, scored twice in the final on Sunday to push United past host Chilliwack FC in the Pacific Coast Soccer League’s Challenge Cup final, 3-1.

60th anniversary party is a time to look back on B.C.’s first Custom Car and Hot Rod Club One hundred current and former members of the British Columbia Custom Car Association celebrated with a dinner dance at Mission Raceway Park in July to mark ALYN EDWARDS the 60th anniversary CLASSIC of Vancouver’s first RIDES custom car club – once the largest club of its type in North America. In late 1951, Vancouver Sun pressman Bob Phinney was cruising his customized 1940 Mercury convertible to meet hot rod friends Ron Vaughn and Jim Giberson at the Aristocrat Drive-in Restaurant on Vancouver’s Kingsway at Fraser Street. It was a wild scene in the early days on Kingsway and other Vancouver streets with late night drag races involving stripped down cars with hopped engines and roaring exhaust. The talk among the three of forming a club dedicated to responsibility and safety resulted in a newspaper ad inviting hot ot rodders to a meeting to be held in an empty storee at 546 Kingsway on Jan. 24, 1952. That store would d soon become Cal-Van Hott Rod Parts. Ninety people showed up and it was decided to move forward with the club, initially called the Vancouver Customs Club to avoid the negative connotation

President Chuck Robinson, who worked at the downtown Bowell-Maclean Cadillac dealership, was driving a customized 1950 Ford convertible with a new Oldsmobile 98 engine. He led the club in promoting safe driving and the search for a place where speed enthusiasts could race their cars without endangering themselves or the public. Just six months after its founding, club was rocked by the drowning deaths of founding members Bob Phinney and Owen Sedman in a boating accident during a club picnic at Cuitus Lake. Continued on Pg. a hopped up GMC truck engine for his daily driver and weekend racing. Club members learned to put on drag races as they went with rolling starts, up to six cars abreast and timing done with stopwatches. In September 1953, Larry entered his car with those of other members in Vancouver’s first custom car show – the Pacific International Motorama – organized by BCCCA in Vancouver’s Kerrisdale Arena. The object was to raise money for timing equipment to be used at the Abbotsford drag strip. The show drew thousands of spectators. The 1955 Pacific International Motorama show would be moved to the Pacific International Exhibition and expanded every year attracting up to 35,000 spectators until the club sold the show to a private company in 1973. In 1954, the club received a donated 1942 Ford former BC Electric bus. Chuck Robinson painted it in a club member’s backyard and it went to work hauling the club’s drag strip timing equipment. The club continued to meet every two weeks and put out a newsletter called Clutch Chatter. A major blow to the club came in the fall of 1957 with the announcement that the Abbotsford Airport was to be reactivated and would no longer be available for drag racing. Long-time club member Keith Warren moved to Vancouver from Ontario with his parents in 1958 and was swept up in the Vancouver custom car scene. “I was amazed to see many of the cars that had been featured in magazines being driven daily on the streets,� he recalls of the exciting custom car culture. The young bank employee bought a 1940 Ford coupe for $200 and joined BCCCA in the summer of 1960. He and other club members turned their attention to buying up subdivision lots in Mission to get enough property to build the club’s own drag strip. Once they had purchased all the lots, they applied to have the roads removed from the plan and got that land for

free. The Mission Drag Strip opened Aug. 29, 1965 with 5,000 spectators and 130 cars. It would quickly become sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association, drawing some North America’s top drag racers. The drag strip set more records than any other track in North America. Keith Warren was the first flag starter for the drag races in the early days. Mission Raceway ran successfully for 18 years. But BCCCA gave up the drag strip in 1978 after agreeing to a land swap to allow the City of Mission to create and industrial park. It took years and provincial intervention to get Mission to make good on the promise to provide a new location which would become Mission Raceway Park, opening in 1992 as a multiple use facility owned and operated by the BC Custom Car Association. Keith Warren continues to be an active BCCCA member 52 years after joining. He drives a 1932 Ford roadster with a 1956 Chrysler Hemi engine. His hot rod could have been built in the 1950s and uses many parts and pieces Keith has collected over the past 50 years. Buick will make its IntelliLink in-car connectivity available on every 2013 model year vehicle. And the brand will help owners get acquainted with the advanced technology with real-time over-the-air help. Designed to be used with two hands on the wheel as often as possible, IntelliLink’s layout was created with an emphasis on minimizing distractions. New features for 2013 integrate more functionality into the system’s voice control commands. Owners of 2013 models can tune to a favourite station solely by voice command. Likewise, saying “More like this” while an iPod or other USB media device is playing generates a random music playlist based on the current song. The “More like this” feature uses Gracenote media database technology to identify artist and song titles. For 2013, Gracenote’s album cover art display capability expands to include genre and artist art. To speed the use of IntelliLink and keep the driver’s eyes on the road, a new “Quick Info” icon allows access to the most popular features, audio info and turn-by-turn navigation. An added “Transfer to Private” icon allows a Bluetooth-paired phone call to be moved off the vehicle’s speakerphone. In addition to upcoming in-car updates, Buick has created a support network for customers who need help familiarizing themselves with new IntelliLink technology. Based in Oshawa, Ontario the Customer Care Centre Infotainment Customer Support Team will provide one-on-one guidance for owners. Mercedes-Benz Canada has announced that for the third consecutive year, the MercedesBenz Sprinter continues to offer the lowest total cost of ownership in its class in Canada. In addition, the MercedesBenz Sprinter also captured three accolades in Vincentric’s inaugural Best Fleet Value in Canada Awards, winning every category in which it competed. The comprehensive total cost of ownership study conducted by Vincentric examined the competitive landscape and analyzed the lifecycle costs of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter compared to its four main competitors, including the latest vehicle that recently entered the segment.
The Lifecycle Cost Analysis methodology examined all ownership and operating costs, including: depreciation, fuel costs, insurance, maintenance, repairs, financing, fees and taxes and even opportunity cost, which is the loss of potential interest income as a result of owning and operating a vehicle. The extensive study calculated many different permutations for annual total distances travelled in Canada of 25,000, 30,000, 40,000, 50,000 and 60,000 kilometres per year for three, four, and five years. This resulted in 15 different combinations of annual driving distance and lifecycle terms, and measured 49 vehicle configurations from five models in both the three-quarter (2,500) and one-ton (3,500) full-size van segments.
