Richard Harding, director of parks, recreation and culture, checks out a fence that marked the boundary between Buttertubs Marsh and privately owned marshland. The fence will likely come down with the city’s purchase of the 25-hectare section of land that extends west from Buttertubs wetlands to the Nanaimo Parkway. CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN
Marsh protection grows City partners with Ducks Unlimited to buy 25 hectares of sensitive wetland known as the ‘west marsh’ BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
Sensitive wetland west of Nanaimo’s Buttertubs Marsh is now protected green space. The City of Nanaimo and Ducks Unlimited Canada co-purchased 25 hectares and
are creating a management plan to ensure ecosystems are protected for species at-risk and other animals that live in the area. The property is west of Buttertubs Marsh and east of the parkway, and is commonly referred to as the west marsh. The land was appraised at $1.1 million and was purchased from a private owner. The city contributed $430,000, Ducks Unlimited contributed $400,000 and the remaining $300,000 was secured through the federal government’s Ecological Gifts Program. It’s the first property co-managed by the city and Ducks Unlimited. “The main part is to maintain the ecological integrity but add into that public
use,” said Brad Arner, Ducks Unlimited’s manager of provincial operations. “It’s a great addition to the area and to have that side … it’s really a gem and bonus for the city.” Arner said amphibians will benefit the most from the protection. It will help species such as the western painted turtle and red-legged frogs, but will also benefit birds and is an off-stream habitat area for trout and salmon, in particular coho salmon. Richard Harding, City of Nanaimo director of parks, recreation and culture, said the partners will explore how to improve links with the Millstone River to provide more salmon-rearing ground. ◆ See ‘HABITAT’ /4

My wife and I wanted to give our money locally to a charity we know.
Philanthropist offers additional support for NALT BY MELISSA FRYER THE NEWS BULLETIN
One day David Stanley and Ria De Vos will be able to walk through a piece of land on Nanaimo River they helped preserve, thanks to a donation of more than $83,000 to Nanaimo and Area Land Trust. It’s De Vos and Stanley’s second donation to the organization, about double what they gave previously. The land trust’s executive director, Gail Adrienne, said she was stunned when the couple called with news of their intended donation. “We really didn’t expect to see more from them,” Adrienne said. The couple and the land trust decided to divide the money and put $50,000 toward the group’s operating expenditures and the remainder into a reserved account to kick start an acquisition campaign for property along the Nanaimo River. “My wife and I wanted to give our money locally to a charity we know,” Stanley said. “We want to see some results.” Stanley’s first donation – $55,000 in shares – helped the acquisition of Mount Benson property in 2007. ◆ See ‘RIVER’ /4

Former bank manager to face fraud, theft charges A former customer service manager with TD/Canada Trust has been charged with theft and fraud for alleged fraudulent banking transactions totaling nearly $60,000. Frederick Scott Deering, 48, a former TD/Canada Trust branch customer service manager in Nanaimo, was charged Aug. 2 with one count of fraud over $5,000 and one count of theft over $5,000. The charges stem from an investigation that started in September 2010 after it was alleged Deering misappropriated funds from dormant bank accounts. The discovery triggered a joint investigation involving the Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crime Unit and the TD Bank Group Corporate Investigations Division. While employed with TD/Canada Trust, Deering worked as a customer service manager in Nanaimo TD/Canada Trust branches at both Turner Road and Terminal Park Mall. Deering’s employment with the company was terminated in October 2010. Police said the investigation did not turn up any account holders from the Nanaimo area affected by the fraudulent transactions. Deering’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 25 at Nanaimo provincial court.

Sudden closure a surprise BY MELISSA FRYER THE NEWS BULLETIN
An iconic restaurant and major draw to Nanaimo’s downtown core is no longer in business. The Modern Café closed Thursday, with a bailiff notice posted to the Commercial Street restaurant’s door to advise staff and customers. Owner Scott Cooper, who won a Sterling Award in May for Business Leader of the Year, posted on the restaurant’s
Facebook page: “It is with great sadness today that I announce that the Modern Café is closed and has ceased operation under current ownership. I am so very sorry for the trouble and anguish that I have caused staff, customers, vendors, and the City of Nanaimo.” It’s the second restaurant to close suddenly downtown, with the Dancing Goat coffee shop and restaurant on Front Street closing last month. Corry Hostetter, general manager of the Downtown Nanaimo Business
Improvement Association, said the organization often hears about struggling businesses, but not this time – the closing of the Modern was a complete surprise. “We didn’t see the Dancing Goat happen either,” Hostetter said, adding the failure of the two restaurants isn’t indicative of the business climate. “From what I’m hearing from other businesses, business is good,” she said. arts@nanaimobulletin.com
A 47-year-old Nanaimo man was taken to hospital Wednesday with serious leg injuries after he was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on Estevan Road. The incident happened shortly after 6 p.m. when the victim was crossing on a marked crosswalk near Quadra Avenue. The vehicle that allegedly hit him, described as a dark colour SUV, was travelling northbound and did not stop. No licence plate number was obtained for the vehicle. The rider was knocked down and suffered serious leg injuries. He was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for treatment and was released later that night. Investigators were unable to turn up any witnesses when they canvassed the area of the accident scene. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-7542345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477 or online at www. nanaimocrimestoppers. com.
Province to explore online voting possibilities BY TOM FLETCHER BLACK PRESS
It won’t happen in time for the provincial election next spring, but the B.C. government is moving ahead with Premier Christy Clark’s pledge to examine online voting at the local and provincial level. Some municipalities have suggested modernizing elections to make voting more convenient, and reverse the recent trend to lower voter participation.
Clark proposed the idea during last year’s B.C. Liberal leadership campaign. Justice Minister Shirley Bond announced Thursday that she has asked Chief Electoral Officer Keith Archer to set up an expert panel to make recommendations. Archer asked the government last year to give him authority to conduct pilot projects for electronic voting, and to consider extending voter registration to 16and 17-year-olds, as has been done in Australia and some U.S. states.
During his leadership bid, Health Minister Mike de Jong proposed lowering the voting age from 18 to 16, to encourage younger people to get involved as part of their high school education. Nola Western, deputy chief electoral officer at Elections B.C., said the panel will likely need until 2014 to recommend changes to the Election Act that would permit online voting. Independent experts on Internet security and electoral administration will be asked to serve on
a committee chaired by Archer, with a first meeting expected by October. Elections B.C. already has online voter registration, as well as data sharing with the federal voters’ list, ICBC and the B.C. Vital Statistics Agency to keep the voters’ list up to date. Western said online voting has been used in Halifax and Markham, Ont., but has not yet been tried at the provincial or federal level in Canada. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Habitat enhancement goals met ◆ From /1 The city already co-manages the Buttertubs Marsh Conservation Area with the Nature Trust of British Columbia. That conservation area is 21.5 hectares and the majority was purchased in 1975. Buttertubs is owned by the Nature Trust of B.C., but is managed through agreements with the city, the province and public volunteer groups. Harding said with the city involved in the management of both properties it creates opportunities to enhance the wetland area as a whole.
“
This is valuable habitat and recreational land for the enjoyment of the city.
“The main objective is habitat enhancement,” said Harding, adding that public
access opportunities will also be available, but need further planning. Bill Merilees, chairman of the Buttertubs Marsh Liaison Committee, was overjoyed at the news. He said acquiring the west marsh was an ongoing process for many environmental groups, which worried the land would be developed. “This is valuable habitat and recreational land for the enjoyment of the city of Nanaimo and the people of B.C.,” said Merilees. “Now we have to roll up our sleeves and get to work.” The Nature Trust of B.C.
is looking forward to working with the city and Ducks Unlimited on conservation efforts for the entire marsh area, said Thomas Reid, Nature Trust’s Vancouver Island conservation land manager. “We’re really excited, actually quite thrilled to have that area [protected],” said Reid. “It protects the entire marsh ecosystem in perpetuity.” The draft management plan for the marsh area will be presented at the Monday (Aug. 13) Nanaimo council meeting.

River effort to benefit
◆ From /1 Stanley said the land trust does good work and wants to see it continue to preserve and protect the environment. The money went to the land trust in the form of Enbridge shares, an oil and gas transportation company currently trying to secure the Northern Gateway pipeline to carry Alberta petroleum through B.C. to port in Kitimat. The shares were sold and the money deposited. Thanks to tax law from 2006, people can transfer shares, stocks, bonds or real estate to a Canadian charity to be eligible for a tax receipt, to be applied to the donor’s income tax deductions. Stanley said he bought the shares more than
ALMANAC
20 years ago and they increased substantially in value. By donating to the land trust, he avoids capital gains taxes. “It’s much more efficient to give the shares to NALT,” he said. The money secures stability for the land trust through 2013 and gives a boost to the long-term strategy to preserve the Nanaimo River watershed. The land trust hosted a symposium last year to get direction and plot a strategy to preserve the area, some of which is up for sale through several logging companies. The land trust is still securing regular contributions from supporters. To donate, or for more infor mation, please visit www.nalt.bc.ca. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

â—† MID-ISLAND CO-OP hosts event Saturday (Aug. 11) including a Tour de Rock barbecue.
Tuesday’s lightning storm sparked wildfire concerns and fire officials are asking the public to keep an eye out for smoke or flames. Marg Drysdale, Coastal Fire Centre spokeswoman, said no fires were reported in the mid-Island area as of Wednesday morning, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t going to be any – lightning struck the ground in the Nanaimo area and it can sometimes take some time before a fire is reported and confirmed. Drysdale said some lightning fires can be what officials call holdover fires – subsurface fires that smoulder until the weather warms up and/or conditions are right. “An analogy would be like popcorn – it would simmer, simmer, simmer, then pop up, she said. “We may get

Small community fundraising events are making a difference in the fight against cancer. It’s the kid’s lemonade stands, backyard barbecues and community garage sales that are combining to raise the majority of money for the Tour de Rock every year, said Jennifer Sears, Tour de Rock community fundraising coordinator for mid-Vancouver Island. Some kids are even donating their birthday money to the cause. “They are really community events,â€? said Sears. Money donated to the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock supports pediatric cancer research and programs, as well as Camp Goodtimes for children, teens and young adults with cancer or are cancer survivors. Sears said the camp enables kids to forget about cancer while they are there and just have fun. “The camp is amazing ‌ it’s unbelievable,â€? said Sears. Sears said community fundraising events held every year also help raise awareness about Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, a twoweek bicycle ride across Vancouver Island that began in 1998. The team of police officers and invited riders cover 1,000 kilometres during the tour. Black Press is represented on the tour by Kyle Slavin, a reporter in Greater Victoria. People interested in creating a fundraising event can contact
Sears at 250-713-5880 or go to www. tourderock.ca for more information. Sears said Tour de Rock can help promote the event and other resources. Several fundraising events are already scheduled for Nanaimo. Mid-Island Co-op is hosting its International Year of the Co-operatives Celebration Saturday (Aug. 11) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bowen Road location. The event features a Tour de Rock fundraising hotdog barbecue and free entertainment for families. On Aug. 24, Tour De Roof at Port Place Mall at Thrifty Foods will feature Nanaimo riders Cpl. Norm Smith and reserve Const. Chris Fernandes trying to earn their way off the roof with donations. The event features entertainment and a barbecue. The Tour de Rock Red Serge community dinner is Sept. 30. Tickets are available at the Canadian Cancer Society office, Coast Capital Savings Credit Union on Aulds Road and the Inn on Long Lake. On Oct. 1, Tour de Rock riders roll into town on their way down the Island. People can meet the riders from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Diana Krall Plaza and enjoy entertainment. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Fairness vital in boundaries We like to think of political ridings as tight little pockets of community where people share values and ideas, and elect a representative who will carry those values and ideals to Ottawa. Reality, of course, is something far different. And you should think about that before you get too excited about a proposed federal electoral boundary that will lop the ‘Cowichan’ off the bottom of Nanaimo-Cowichan, and IF THE take all but a tiny sliver of NUMBERS the Nanaimo out of what is work, the now Nanaimo-Alberni. actual lines Federal electoral boundaren’t all that aries may attempt to take into account such things as important. geography and culture. But in reality they are purely political constructs built with the overriding factor of fair representation by population. For Nanaimo voters, it seems to make good sense to have city voters casting ballots together, rather than split down the middle by an arbitrary line that has neighbours represented by different members in Ottawa. But most of the noise you will hear will be political posturing. The fact of the matter is we are all Canadians and Vancouver Islanders, and we will all get one vote. That vote will influence what political party gets control of our country and what person will be your conduit to those corridors of powers. And, ultimately, that comes down to the candidates themselves. Whether your neighbours to the north or the south share in your selection ultimately won’t matter much at all. Certainly the ridings won’t become so sprawling the change will suddenly make your MP inaccessible. If the boundary shuffle results in a more equitable Parliamentary breakdown and fair representation, it gets our full support.

The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, 201 Selby St., Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 2R2. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org

While I’m leaving the industry full-time to hop the fence to communications, I expect I’ll continue to find my way into newspapering, whether it’s freelancing, or on contract or just writing letters to the editor with some of my many and varied and at-times outlandish opinions. Perhaps I’ll finally get around to doing some magazine writing also. Who knows? I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on the Bulletin – editors are often just like parents about the products they produce; even as we move on, we can’t help but check in and make sure things are going OK. It’s not without some trepidation that I leave the Bulletin, Black Press and newspapers, not to mention the dozens of great people with whom I’ve worked, all of which have been a safe haven. For now, it’s exciting to embark on this new challenge by heading back to university, even if it is to work, not attend classes. I’ll get to talk to incredibly intelligent people every day who have fascinating stories to share with the world, and I’ll get to do some of that sharing. Much like that Friday roughly 14 years ago, I leave the News Bulletin office not really knowing what lies ahead. I’ll find out soon enough. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Water conservation needed building a new dam, at a cost of $60 million. I have to wonder why water conservation never enters into the discussion. Within the City of Nanaimo, there are about 19,000 single-family homes. Nanaimo also is home for
To the Editor, Re: Another option eyed by city in attempts to expand water supply, Aug. 7. I’m a little surprised at the choices suggested in the article, which says the city is looking at either tapping into Harmac’s water supply or
a business, Idus Controls, which has developed a system that can cut water usage by up to 30 percent in a typical home. The math is pretty simple. If such a system could be retrofitted into each home for, say, $1,500, the total cost
would be less than half the expense of building a new dam with most of the money pumped into the economy. If Harmac has water to spare, it should be freed up for the fish. Norm Wagenaar Nanaimo

Ask for what you want in life
Readers respond: Feedback on news items To the Editor, Re: People have right to water concerns, Letters Aug. 7. Once again June Ross makes unsupported and misleading statements with regard to her disdain for the companies that sell bottled water. Ross claims taxpayers do not pay for the water itself. If that is the case, why does the nice man from the city read my water meter, and why does the city send me a bill based on my consumption? In Nanaimo the tap water is only treated with chlorine, whereas water taken from the municipal source in Vancouver is filtered four times and treated with UV, reverse osmosis and finally is ozonated. They are not, in fact, selling us the same quality of water that comes from the tap. Apparently, the Vancouver Island Health Authority would agree, as they have ordered Nanaimo to spend $72 million on a water filtration plant as our current water is not deemed to be safe in its present form. The claim that plastic bottles used to transport water now fill up huge portions of our oceans is once again unsupported opinion. I presume Ross has not been at the bottle depot lately – there are tractor trailers filled with empty plastic bottles daily. If Ross wishes to ban all plastic bottles, perhaps she would explain the
alternative. Glass bottles? Aluminum cans? The claim that these bottles are releasing dangerous toxins into the water is another unsupported opinion. What is the opinion of Health Canada? Are they knowingly putting Canadians’ health at risk? Again, is the intention to ban all plastic bottles? I am not a shill for the bottled water companies, and drink water from my tap, but I also would like the opportunity to buy a bottle of water if I find myself thirsty and have not brought along a bottle from home. City council, in a decision that was likely as much about pandering to CUPE, has decided to waste thousands of tax dollars making drinking water available at all civic facilities so they can justify not allowing the sale of bottled water from
vending machines. I hope they will also be banning all drinks that come in a plastic bottle. Jim Taylor Nanaimo
Bottled water issue primarily about cost To the Editor, Re: Cost of tap water paid by taxpayers, Letters, Aug. 2. The representative for Nestle Waters Canada, John B. Challinor II, appears to be rather confused about the issues surrounding the possible banning of bottled water from Regional District of Nanaimo properties. This is not a health but a cost issue. There is no reason for advocates for banning bottled water to be “against the Canadian beverage industry” other than being against the largely uneccesary environmental cost it creates. This is not a vendetta, but a sensible battle against a product that is already available at much lower cost to all Canadians. He is correct when he states that tap water is not free but is paid for by taxpayers, who also pay for the disposal of all those empty bottles. What he fails to clarify is that regardless of whether you pay the outrageous prices for bottled water – including its distribution, manufacturing and disposal of the waste bottles – you are doing so on top of what you have already paid for municipal water. Does this make any economic sense? Liz Fox Lantzville
Proposal for marina raises questions To the Editor, Re: Critics float marina worries, Aug. 7. A private company wants a 30-year lease (for an undisclosed amount) on our harbour. This company promises to spend millions of dollars on improving the wharves and the infrastructure and they plan to do so and still make a profit. Am I missing something here? How can this private company pay a lease, (which we don’t have to) make improvements and still make money? Do they have a magic bullet? Is this something that only they can do? Something that we, the owners of the harbour, can’t do? After all these years of making huge yearly profits through the Harbour Commission, are we going to just hand over everything to a private company and lose the control of our harbour along with the benefits and the profits that we as a community derive from it. Is the ‘Harbour City’ suddenly too lazy or too inept to husband our own jewel of a resource for our own benefit? Do I ask too many questions? As a taxpayer in this lovely Harbour City, I begin to wonder if our city fathers have begun to suffer from some form of dementia. Alan MacKinnon Nanaimo

TTeens with fireworks ignite stump blaze Firefighters managed to snuff out a fire in a tree stump before it got a chance to turn serious Tuesday. The fire was reported shortly before 6 p.m. in a heavily wooded city park in the 5900 block of Sunset Road in north Nanaimo. Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Res-
cue loss prevention officer, said the fire was triggered by three teens setting off Roman candles, who were spotted by a witness as they fled. “You can play that up any way you want because that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of doing on a dry weather day,” Mond said.

Canadian costs of living will change as profits from selling oil and biofuels and automobiles dwindle. Already, studies are beginning to show that farmers’ market prices for organic goods are often lower than those goods in supermarkets. And their prices will come down the more we buy, just as prices for TV sets and computers came down when people bought more and more. History shows that societies fail when the rich get too rich and the poor get too poor. While we in the 99 per cent still have some cash, I’d like to see it spent supporting alternative ways of living before the only alternative is chaos and revolutions. ◆ Marjorie Stewart is board chairwoman of the Nanaimo Foodshare Society. n a unique turn of events, a married couple will cruise Vancouver Island as part of the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. Const. Dorothy Junio, the Oak Bay police school resource officer, will tackle the Tour de Rock alongside husband Const. Jett Junio of Saanich police. They are the first married couple “You only get to to take part in the do it once and do it Canadian Cancer together ‌â€? Society fundraiser. “You only get to do – Const. Dorothy Junio it once and to do it together ‌,â€? Dorothy began. “It’s a unique opportunity for sure,â€? Jett finished. “We have the luxury of debriefing everything we do from work to riding because we’re on the same page.â€? They also share in fundraising responsibilities and aside from police work, in a local business as well. Jett returns to the Saanich police ranks in January after an 18-month leave to run Riders Cycles, a bicycle business on Cloverdale Avenue that the couple purchased a year ago. The Junios came to Victoria four years ago after long careers with the Edmonton Police Service. Cops for Cancer fundraisers were

rooted in Edmonton. The Island-wide ride, Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, developed from those events in the mid-1990s. “We knew the event (in Edmonton) was raising funds for kids with cancer, but the magnitude didn’t hit us until we got here, Jett said. “The fever we didn’t feel until we got to the Island, Dorothy added. “The whole Island embracing it is amazing. With their kids, Adam and Ethan hitting 16 and 17 this year, they felt an opportunity to make a commitment to the cause. Plus it’s a year of milestones for the pair; both turned 50, celebrated 25 years of policing and it’s the 15th year of the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. Then there’s the illness itself. Dorothy’s mom developed cancer (she’s faring well right now), and suddenly they saw it throughout their peers. “It became a big deal, Dorothy said. The biggest hurdles won’t be the kilometres-long hills or rainy days spent on a bike. “It’s going to be the emotions, Dorothy said. “You sometimes have to battle that along with the physical. As for the highs, just participating and seeing people dig deep to give is already providing those. “The ride itself is secondary, Jett said. “It’s a vehicle to reach out to people for a greater cause: the kids.

Chair exercises help build core strength I
progress from level one. “You can get an amazing core workout in a chair,” said McNeil, who previously taught a similar course as part of Vancouver Island Health Authority’s integrated health network plan. The class will also help people increase their strength, balance and flexibility. McNeil tailors exercises to people’s fitness levels and there are several variations of the routines for people to choose from depending on their health condition. McNeil teaches a total of 12 exercise classes for parks, recreation and culture this fall, including a number of full-figured fitness classes. McNeil knows what it’s like to struggle with losing weight. She’s lost more than 100 pounds and kept it off. McNeil said an important thing to remember is to be as fit as you can be for the shape a person is in. She said everyone has a different internal and external shape that can be improved with exercise. When not teaching for the city, she’s busy as a personal trainer and fitness instructor at her own business, The Shape You’re In. She combines a degree in psychology and aerobic and personal trainer certification from the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association to help people reach their fitness goals. People with questions about which class would be the best fit for them can e-mail McNeil at tara@theshapeyouarein. com. For more information on the fall fitness classes please call parks, recreation and culture at 250-756-5200 or go to www. nanaimo.ca.
FITNESS CLASS increases abilities of people with chronic health conditions. BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
A sore back can seem like a big hurdle to overcome when a person wants to exercise. Bad knees can affect the ability to bend and perform squats. People who have difficulty walking may ponder how to increase their activity levels without injuring themselves. Tara McNeil, a personal trainer and fitness instructor, says people often don’t know where to start to increase their physical activity. It can sometimes be intimidating to go into regular classes and exercise alongside people who may not suffer from chronic health conditions, she said. This fall, McNeil is instructing a parks, recreation and culture course – Learning to Exercise Again – for people with chronic health conditions who want to increase their activity levels, but need guidance to ensure they don’t injure themselves. McNeil said the key to her classes is making sure people have fun. “If you go to a class and it’s drudgery, you are never going to go back,” she said. The dynamics of a class are important and people also need to feel safe and comfortable while exercising, McNeil said, adding that she also likes to keep people motivated and help build their self-esteem. The course is offered in two levels. Level one requires a doctor’s note so McNeil knows how to tailor exercises to participants’ abilities. It consists of exercises where participants either sit in a chair or stand beside it. Level two involves similar exercises building on

Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. With age the greatest risk factor for dementia, that number is expected to grow. The latest census data shows that 19.2 percent of the Nanaimo population was 65 or older in 2011, which is why the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is offering its free workshop, Getting to Know Dementia, for area residents. The introductory workshop runs Thursday (Aug. 16) and Sept. 12. “Participants will receive basic information on dementia and the impact it has on the individual, their care partners, and their support network,” said Jane Hope, the society’s regional education and

Spending the winter in the sunny south sure beats contending with the ice and snow of our Canadian winters. To truly enjoy the fruits of the snowbird lifestyle experience, preparation before the travel season arrives is key. The most important consideration is health and that of your loved ones. Some people regard travel medical insurance as an added expense or luxury, but the Canadian Snowbird Association warns that even small, unexpected medical issues can lead to tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills. “Today, travelling without supplemental health insurance is akin to gambling with your life savings,” said Bob Slack, association president. “Provincial government healthinsurance plans do not cover full medical expenses outside of Canada and 85-95 per cent of any medical bills will usually be your responsibility.” Many people feel they are adequately covered through their credit card or an employer benefit plan but, often, these have restrictive limits and conditions and should not be depended upon without a careful reading of the actual insurance policy. The association urges all travelling Canadians to obtain travel medical insurance before leaving the country.
Baby boomers concerned about retirement finances Most baby boomers can’t wait to spend their time as they wish in retirement. But an RBC Retirement Myths and Realities Poll shows nearly 42 per cent of boomers still working expect managing cash flow in retirement to be difficult, and 37 per cent are worried they do not have enough money to do what they want.

Hot Yoga IT’S WORTH IT! www.bikramyogananaimo.com
Only 52 per cent of those expecting to retire within a year have a detailed budget as part of a financial plan. Further more, t h e s u r ve y fo u n d that retired boomers require a higher percentage of their annual pre-retirement income, up from 56 per cent in 2011 and 2010. Poll results show that only half of those within a year of retirement have created a detailed budget. That first step should coincide with working with a financial advisor to create a retirement income plan.

Day camps important CITY’S PROGRAMS offer places for children to mature, gain skills and develop relationships.
I
BY AMANDA DALY
Can you believe there is less than one month left of summer vacation? Soon enough children will be back at school and busy with after-class activities. They simply do not have as much down time to just play as in previous generations. By down time we don’t mean sitting quietly playing video games, we mean good old-fashioned fun, the kind that lets you be you without a care in the world. That’s where parks, recreation and culture day camps come in. They’re not just a place to spend the day while school is out, they are a valuable experience where campers mature, gain skills and develop important relationships. Day camp can be a child’s first independent experience away from mom and dad, a place where they can strengthen emerging skills, such as making new friends, taking care of their own belongings, trying new activities, and taking risks. Camp leaders help children build bonds
within the camp and gently push even the youngest campers outside of their comfort zone, challenging them to take risks and engage in independent decision making. Games such as hide and seek, ultimate Frisbee, and capture the flag, provide a set of rules that govern how to behave in certain situations and teach children social skills they need to know. Campers practise decision making skills by deciding how to have the most fun, how to be the most creative or how to be
the group with the most camp spirit. Leadership skills develop when campers organize new games, rally fellow campers and model appropriate behaviours for others. The opportunities to build problem-solving skills happen daily by learning to solve disagreements between fellow campers, working through conflicting ideas about group projects, or how best to use the talents of each camper in a group competition. There are a lot of camp choices from Camp Holidaze and Girls Get Active, to Adventure Ice Camp and other special interest camps. There is something every week for every

(Jack) August 21, 1930 - August 3, 2012 Jack quietly slipped away in the early morning of August 3, 2012. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters, Kellie (Dennis) and Terri; his adored granddaughter, Shaelyn; his brother, George (Loraine); sisters, Arletta (James), Beverley, and Nola (Peter) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his best friend and partner, Kay Rice and his parents John and Arletta Bready. Jack was born in Edmonton Alberta, the oldest of 5 children; he left home at 16 to make his way in the world. Jack was a hard worker and tried his hand at many things, from farming to surveying; he was a “Jack“ of all trades. He settled in Clearwater BC where he lived for over 35 years until his retirement from Slocan in 1993 as a Draftsman. Following his retirement, he moved to Nanaimo. Jack was an active member of the Lions Club, ďŹ rst in Clearwater and then in Nanaimo, and was presented with the Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowship Award in 2010 for his Outstanding Achievement and Contributions to Lionism. Jack was an avid curler and member of the Nanaimo Curling Centre’s Senior Men’s Division. Jack loved music and was often found playing his guitar and singing at home, around the Saturday campďŹ re or at family gatherings. nights in Clearwater you would usually ďŹ nd him on stage, behind his drums, playing with the Trophy Mountain Boys. Jack was always the optimist. His positive outlook on life and his sense of humour was his gift to those who had the honour of knowing him. Funeral Service, for Jack, will take place Monday, August 20th at 11:00 a.m., at Sands Funeral Chapel, Nanaimo, with a reception to follow. In lieu of owers, donations may be made to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Sands – Nanaimo (250)753-2032

Born July 16, 1941 - Passed August 04, 2012 (71 years young) George passed peacefully in his sleep at the Paliative Care Unit at Nanaimo General Regional Hospital surrounded by family after a courageous battle with Cancer. He will be greatly missed by his soul-mate, Georgina Doreen Dreger, his daughter, Corrina (Gavin ), his son, Ken (Amanda), and his grandchildren, Jason, Lucas and Nicholas. George became very close to Georgina’s siblings, Evelyn (Kelly), Joanne (Ron), Don, Mikeal, Sherri and Toni (Paul) along with their families, which includes many wonderful nieces and nephews. Although, he had survived his 14 brothers and 1 sister, he had many nephews and nieces who cared for him deeply. George worked for CNR in his early years but, eventually, spent many years in the forest industry as a Head Sawyer. He made many dear friends during those years at the Mill. George loved the camping and the ďŹ shing that went on during all of the family reunions. He had a great sense of humour and people looked to him many times for entertainment and laughter. He was always ready with a smile. We will be having a Celebration of his Life on Saturday, August 18th at the home he shared with Georgina at 2773 Marvelle Place (O Tamara Drive near Divers Lake). It will be an open-house for everyone to drop by at any time during the day to express their sympathies and to share their memories.

Whitecaps make fans in Nanaimo
Raiders expect a challenge in home opener BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
Young soccer players had a chance this week to learn some skills and drills, but mostly, to get inspired. The Vancouver Whitecaps FC soccer team held a series of events in Nanaimo Tuesday through Thursday as part of Kw’umut Lelum Child and Family Services’ KL Cares and Kicks program. Whitecaps players and Vancouver Island University’s soccer program led First Nations children through drills and games Wednesday at Merle Logan Field. Whitecaps player Darren Mattocks said he enjoys participating in the camps because he says he’s a big kid himself. “We were all young players once, so it’s really good to come out and see the youngsters,” said the 21-year-old striker from Jamaica. “I was once their age and hoping for big things and now I’m in this position, I would do anything for the kids and anything for the community because Vancouver and in general B.C. have been fantastic to the Vancouver Whitecaps.” The youths had a chance to practise and play with the ’Caps and get autographs and advice. With Vancouver’s Major League Soccer club having a strong season at 9-7-7, the Whitecaps are becoming a bigger deal. “Everyone loves winners and once you’re winning, everyone can jump on that bandwagon and that’s really fantastic,” Mattocks said. Whitecaps forward Camilo Sanvezzo said he thinks the sport is growing in B.C.

Jeremy White, left, vies for the ball against Vancouver Whitecaps FC striker Darren Mattocks during a scrimmage at the Kw’umut Lelum KL Cares and Kicks soccer camp Wednesday at Merle Logan Field.
“
You don’t need to play professional, soccer is good for life. “This is good for us because they’ve supported us. Every time B.C. Place is full, this is good,” said the 24-year-old Brazilian. “This season we’re doing well and even the support is getting bigger because we know we can win, we can play for playoffs.” And they tried to get the message across to the young players that they, too, can achieve their goals on the soccer pitch.

Mattocks, addressing a group of children in between drills on the new turf surface at Merle Logan, said kids in B.C. have better soccer facilities than he grew up with, so they have an opportunity to take advantage. “They can do it, just as we have done,” he said. “They could be where we are and even further.” Sanvezzo said he saw some good talent at the camp, but said it takes a lot of training and a lot of focus to be a professional soccer player. A few hours assisting on the pitch isn’t much time, but it’s enough to offer a bit of Whitecaps wisdom. “We try to say that soccer is good for everyone,” Sanvezzo said. “You don’t need to just play professional, it’s good for life.”
The V.I. Raiders only have one game under their belts this season, but that will have to be enough to prepare them. Because now the toughest opponent in the league awaits. The Raiders take on the Langley Rams this Saturday (Aug. 11) in Nanaimo’s home opener at Caledonia Park. Both teams kicked off the 2012 Canadian Junior Football League season with a win last weekend. The Raiders handled the Westshore Rebels 44-14, while the Rams pulled off something of an upset in a 42-14 road win against the Okanagan Sun. “It’s going to be a pretty tight game, least mistakes wins,” said Dustin Pedersen, V.I. receiver, at practice earlier this week. “So we’ve got a lot of work to do to prepare for them.” The Rams’ defence forced an eye-popping 10 turnovers in the win against the Sun, so the Raiders’ offence will have to take care of the ball. V.I.’s offence looked dangerous against Victoria, but now it will face a higher degree of difficulty. “There’s little stuff we’ve got to work on to sharpen up and make sure our offence is on point, and then we’ll be good from there,” said Ashton Galloway, Raiders tailback. “Just certain reads, reading the defence properly, making sure we all know our plays and just executing every single play to the best we can.” ◆ See ‘OPENER’ /27

V.I. Raiders tailback Ashton Galloway carries the ball last Saturday against the Westshore Rebels.
Opener may be close game ◆ From /26 Ashton Galloway said the team has been looking forward to its first game of 2012 at Caledonia Park, and has been trying to rally fan support at various community events during the offseason. The league’s top two teams right now could put on a good show. “They’re going to be a good challenge this
year,” Galloway said. “We’re just going to keep working in practice, get a lot of film on them, see what they’re doing and really prepare this week for them. And we’ll have a good game on Saturday.” GAME ON … The Raiders and Rams kick off at 5 p.m. at Caledonia Park. Tickets available at the gate. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The Nanaimo White Rapids, and swimmers from around the province, will all be trying for their fastest laps of the summer. The local club hosts the B.C. Summer Swimming Association Championships starting Monday (Aug. 13) at the
Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. “The atmosphere around the pool since Day 1 has been unreal, with the support from the board and the parents,” said Gareth Saunders, Rapids coach. “They’ve put a lot of time into organizing provincials and supporting
TOYOTA
us as coaches and supporting the swimmers.” Provincials begin with water polo all day Monday and games continue all day Tuesday and Wednesday until noon. Diving gets underway Tuesday at 8 p.m. and continues Wednesday
at noon and Thursday at 7 a.m. Synchronized swimming starts Wednesday from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and wraps up Thursday afternoon. The swimming races go all day Friday through Sunday. Look for more in the next two issues of the Bulletin.
