Discovery of elk carcass shocks couple on walk
www.countryclubcentre.com
Boarders see Canada on wheels
BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
Conservation officers are on the lookout for whoever shot a Roosevelt elk close to South Forks Road last week. Nanaimo resident Bob Read came across the carcass while out for a walk with his wife Thursday evening along the gravel road next to the power lines. The pair had only gone about 200 metres along the gravel road when they came upon the adult cow, shot once in the chest and once in the head, but otherwise completely intact. “It was as big as a horse,” said Read. “They’re beautiful animals.” What bothered him, other than that admiring elk in the wild is a highlight of his walks, was how close the shooting took place to a busy road and the fact it appears someone shot the animal for the sake of killing it alone, as no attempt had been made to remove the meat. “The memory of that elk will stay with us,” said Read. “These people aren’t poaching, they’re merely shooting.” Stuart Bates, a provincial conservation officer, believes the animal, a fully grown female, was shot early Thursday morning. ◆ See ‘SIX’ /4

Kelsey Crozier, left, Nick Jean and Jeremy Banting of Switchback Longboards team are following their inclination to meet customers face to face across Canada.
A local skate shop is hitting the road with members of its racing team for a cross-Canada tour at the end of August. The Switchback Longboard team bus is making the journey from Nanaimo to Moncton, N.B., and back with 10 skateboard racers from B.C. and Ontario. The plan is to stop in communities along the way to skate with the locals, as well as attend two high-profile downhill races – the world championships in Calgary and a massive gathering of skateboarders in the Toronto area called the Board Meeting. “It sucks being an online company, because you never get any face time with people,” said Kelsey Crozier, owner of Switchback Longboards. “I thought it would be a good way to meet all the customers.” The Kissing Hands and Shaking Babies tour starts Aug. 27 with a skate event in Vancouver. Other cities the tour will stop in include: Kelowna, Vernon, Kamloops, Edmonton, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Toronto, Picton, Montreal, Quebec City, Fredericton, Halifax and Moncton. Jeremy Banting, 27, of Nanaimo, said the trip is the longest the group has ever done – until now the team has mainly attended races around B.C. ◆ See ‘CREW’ /4

New manager communicates city’s issues to taxpayers
New leader takes over Island forest company

APPLICATIONS SENT in from across Canada.
The city will add to its management team after selecting its first communications manager. The hiring committee chose Philip Cooper for the position. Cooper has been the director of communication with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo since 2006, where he was credited with turning around the negative media coverage of the city by spearheading projects like Big Spirit and Faces of Fort McMurray, both designed to highlight positive aspects of the community. Cooper holds an honours bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Western Ontario and a master’s in applied communications from Royal Roads. He supplemented his degrees with a graduate certificate in project management and a post diploma in corporate communication. Doug Holmes, Nanaimo’s assistant city manager, said the city received local applications for the position as well as applications from across B.C. and five provinces and territories. Cooper is expected to begin his new duties in early September.

Health authority aims to reduce carbon use BY DANIEL PALMER BLACK PRESS
The Vancouver Island Health Authority spent more than $880,000 last year to pay for carbon offsets, something the organization attributes to colder weather in 2011 and the expansion of its hospitals. The 35,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide produced by the authority is still six per cent lower than 2007 levels, when the province began requiring public bodies to purchase offsets through crown corporation Pacific Carbon Trust. VIHA hopes to reduce its carbon footprint by 33 per cent below 2007 levels by 2020. “Heat recovery from chilled water systems has huge potential and is being implemented at Victoria General and Nanaimo Regional General hospitals,” said spokeswoman Shannon Marshall, adding that VIHA is also exploring neighbourhood energy systems with the City of Victoria and Capital Regional District. Pacific Carbon Trust buys carbon credits from energy-efficient companies in the private sector, and then sells them to school districts, health authorities and other gov-

ernment bodies to offset carbon output. Last year, the trust sold $14 million in credits to public institutions. The system is meant to create an across-the-board neutral carbon footprint throughout the province. “It’s basically corporate welfare,” said Jordan Bateman, B.C. Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “The bottom line for me is $14 million in tax money. If it was being handed out in any other kind of grant, people would be up in arms about it.” The carbon-trading program has led to B.C. becoming the third-largest carbon offset economy in North America. It is intended to fund green innovations and encourage reductions in energy consumption. The program has, however, failed to blossom into an international exchange and has not attracted private industry. Only $54,080, or 0.3 per cent, of carbon offset purchases last year came from the private sector. “It’s a free-market failure,” Bateman said. “If it were any other business, we’d shut it down and move on.” editor@nanaimobulletin.com
The Island’s largest forestry company has a new leader with Nanaimo roots. Western Forest Products recently announced the appointment of Don Demens as president. He takes over this role from Dominic Gammiero, who remains CEO and board chairman of the company. Originally hired in 2009, Demens was later appointed senior vicepresident of sales and manufacturing and in 2011, assumed the role of chief operating officer. Demens grew up in Nanaimo and is the third generation of his family in the coastal forestry business – his father managed sawmills, including WFP’s Duke Point mill when it was owned by another company, and his grandfather managed a sawmill in the Port Alberni area. Demens has worked in the forestry business for 27 years, including a 4.5year stint in a lumber sales office in Japan. “Don has been instrumental in the turnaround of Western,” said Gammiero in a press release. “Under his leadership, we have seen a change in business culture with a strong focus on margin. This appointment positions Western with a strong succession framework to build the future of the company.” Demens said downsizing and restructuring contributed to the company’s survival of

the industry downturn, which started in 2008. The company just reported its 11th consecutive quarter of positive financial results, he added. “The most important thing from my perspective is the people on the Island worked hard generating the results we’ve generated,” said Demens. “It’s certainly positive for our employees and our team that the board has seen fit that we go forward with our strategic capital plan. Our objective is to be seen as globally competitive and sustainable.” Western will invest $200 million in its sawmill and timberland operations over the next three years. Demens said the company has announced $23 million in improvements so far, affecting its mills in Port Alberni and Saltair, with more announcements to come. He said it is too soon to say whether any announcements will impact Western’s two Nanaimo sawmill operations. Rick Jeffery, president of Coast Forest Products, of which Western is a member with representation on the board of directors, said the association is happy with the appointment. “Western is turning itself around,” he said. “Don has been a critical part of that, in moving the company forward.” Jeffery said Western is a good example of what is happening on the coast – companies are working hard to improve competitiveness and focused on expanding into highervalue products and markets. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Crew blogs experience ◆ From /1 “The group of people going are all pretty good friends,” said Banting. “It will just be like every other crazy trip we go on. I’m looking forward to meeting a lot of people and skateboarding a lot of new spots.” Crozier plans to start a Facebook event page for each city and get the local skaters involved in planning the events. The International Gravity Sports Association hosts the Downhill Skateboarding World Championship Aug. 31-Sept. 2 on the access road that follows the 1988 Olympic bobsled track. Banting hopes to do well – he’s raced the course twice before and placed in the top 20 of more than 200 competitors.
“It’s a lot of people going down the hill at the same time, a lot of corners,” he said. “You have to be careful where you pass.” A week later, hundreds of skaters are expected to take over Yonge Street during the Board Meeting in Toronto Sept. 8. And on Sept. 15 and 16, the Switchback racers will participate in the Prince Edward County Gravity Festival in Picton, Ont. The Switchback tour crew, which includes riders from Nanaimo, Vancouver, Courtenay, Parksville and Ontario, plans to take the company’s 10-seater 1989 bus across the country, towing a U-Haul trailer outfitted with bunks. ◆ From /1 Bates said not only was the elk shot close to a heavily travelled road – if the elk was standing upright, motorists could have seen it from the road – but also efforts are being made to increase the herd, as while not on the endangered species list, the elk are also not overly abundant here. Limited entry hunting regulations stipulate that only four elk can be shot in the Nanaimo Lakes region each year. The adult cow may have had a calf with her and if so, the shooting has also reduced the calf ’s chances of survival, Bates added. He said officers have found at least six elk shot illegally in the past year, but all the rest have been much further in the bush, up by the Nanaimo Lakes and some had the meat removed. “This is the first elk I’ve seen shot in August,” he said. “It’s usually done in the wintertime.” Anyone who saw anything suspicious in that area last week is asked to call the B.C. Conservation Officer Service’s toll-free hotline at 1-877952-7277. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Partners breathe life back into creek BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN
At first glance, there doesn’t appear to be much life in Departure Creek near Woodstream Park. Look a little closer – maybe under some rocks, along the shore under some branches or near some submerged logs – and you’ll find crayfish, good-sized cutthroat trout, coho fry and many other aquatic creatures working hard to survive. Last year, a run of about 150 pink salmon returned to the river to spawn for the first time in recent memory. It hasn’t always been this way. For decades, Departure Creek was devoid of most aquatic life due to development, pollution and a general misunderstanding of the ecosystem. A small dam, detrimental to fish movement in the stream, was removed last year as a first step to improving the stream. A partnership of the Pacific Salmon Foundation, Harbour City River Stewards, of Department Fisheries and Oceans, and the city is working to ensure the stream

once again is home to a thriving ecosystem for generations to come. “The stream is still under stress,” said Jean Michel Hanssens, spokesman for the Harbour City River Stewards and project manager. “Our goal isn’t to necessarily attract any specific type of fish. It’s to restore the habitat overall and provide a
healthy environment for all species here, including the vegetation along the shoreline and other animals.” Recently, an otter was spotted along the creek, as well as two barred owls. “They’re signs it’s getting healthier. We’re here to help that along,” said Hanssens. On Thursday afternoon, work began to

But Hanssens said it is the beginning of a three-year process that will see Departure Creek rehabilitated as far upstream as possible. “One of the reasons why many of us live here is because of resources like this,” he said. “It’s amazing we have places like this right in the middle of an urban centre, there aren’t many places that do. Car-sharing growth spurs investment
Firefighters kept busy Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded to multiple small bark mulch and bush fires over the weekend, all except one triggered by cigarette butts tossed out of vehicles. “It’s just carelessness,” said Rick Kwanescha, fire prevention officer. “They just toss their butts out the window when they’re driving around and don’t even think about it.” Because it is difficult to assess the severity of a fire until crews arrive, multiple firefighting units are sent to each alarm on a preparefor-the-worst basis and then units not needed to handle minor fires are stood down. The procedure is costly, but necessary.

Departure Bay wall, park to get upgrades Nanaimo city council will seek federal money to improve the seawall and spray park at Departure Bay. If approved, the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund would supply 50 per cent of the project’s cost, with the city picking up the balance through development cost charge reserves. The total cost of the project is expected to be $600,000 and would make the seawall more accessible for people with mobility challenges. The spray park is 20 years old and already slated for upgrades. Other options that also fit federal grant criteria include work at Harewood Centennial Park and the Caledonia Field grandstands. Western Economic Diversification Canada will administer the money and will have about $46 million to allocate.

Nanaimo CarShare Cooperative has doubled the size of its fleet, adding a second vehicle and location to its cost-effective, environmentally friendly service. Steady growth in membership – nearly 40 individual and business drivers are in the non-profit Co-op – spurred the investment in a second car, said Kurt Fischer, a director with the group. A $9,000 grant from The Co-operators helped finance the purchase of a 2009 Pontiac Vibe. Its arrival allows the association to expand its coverage area. The car is stationed at the south end of Port Place Mall downtown, a short walk from the Gabriola and Protection Island ferry terminals. The association’s first vehicle, a Nissan Versa hatchback, now makes its home at the city-owned parking lot just south of the Prideaux Transit Exchange, near the intersection of Prideaux and Fitzwilliam streets. “In addition to serving the neighbourhood population and downtown residents and employers, the Prideaux Exchange location means easy access to the car from much of Nanaimo via a single bus trip,” said Fischer. Nanaimo CarShare members make easy, selfservice bookings for trips as short as an hour or as long as a day. They pay usage fees based on the hours reserved and kilometres travelled. The co-op pays for insurance, maintenance, repairs, BCAA roadside assistance, and gas. “Our members are enjoying freedom from the huge fixed expense and hassles of car ownership, yet have easy access to a car when they want one,” Fischer said. “If members don’t drive during a month, their cost is $0.” The support of the city in providing a reserved parking stall, and the help of bylaw services supervisor Tim Davidson, were key. Dallas Orr, used car manager at Nanaimo Toyota, found a car that fit Nanaimo CarShare’s needs, and “he worked overtime after the sale to help the Co-op’s fleet manager customize the Vibe to fit well with our operations,” Fischer said. The Co-op also counts business owners and employers among its membership, drawn by the many benefits it offers, such as meeting peak demand and cutting costs. “For many trips, carsharing costs less than reimbursing employees,” he says. Firms joining the co-op have one monthly invoice to process – a cheque made out to Nanaimo CarShare – instead of a travel reimbursement cheque to each employee. Employees can choose to leave their cars at home and commute by transit, on foot, by bike, or by carpool, to eliminate parking fees. And less commuting by car means cleaner air and safer streets. VIEX 2012 peeks at past, future I
FAIR PROMISES fun experience along with education. BY BETH HENDRY-YIM THE NEWS BULLETIN
A
tantalizing taste of the past, an exciting glimpse of the future and a whole lot of fun in between will be offered at the Vancouver Island Exhibition this weekend (Aug. 17-19). With three days of events at Beban Park that include: clowns, mainstage entertainment, sheepdog trials, pie eating contest, livestock show and home arts display, there’s something for every family member to enjoy. “A family could easily spend the whole day at the fair,” said Lynn Haley, president of the VIEX board. “There’s something happening throughout the day and the evening entertainment is fantastic.” As well as past favourites like the Kidzone, Mooternity ward and calf-naming contest, the fair will host a historical display of past exhibitions. “The Nanaimo museum provided some relics from the past. We have newspaper clippings and from old farmsteads in Cedar we have items like ribbons from the 1920s. We even received artifacts from Merv Wilkinson’s place,” said Haley. The peek into the past is part of the theme of this year’s fair: Pioneer Ways to Present Days. It’s the start of promotion for the 120th anniversary in two years and will also showcase a drawing of the new agriculture education centre planned to replace four existing barns. There will also be a Remote Control Rally with racetrack, jumps and displays, a husband and wife magic act called Que Bola and for the adventurous, there are the Crazy Balls. “A huge beach ball is in a 40-foot pool. ball and move around the water,” said Haley. “It’s like being a hamster in one of those rolling balls.” The entertainment lineup presents a variety of performers opening with Order of Canada inductee, Valdy, and including best new Canadian country artist of the year nominee, Dallas Smith. “There’s a real flow to this years entertainment,” said Don Boyd, main stage director. “We’ve got a lot of up and com-

ing new artists like 17-year-old Hope King, Braeden Marshall and The Royal Canadians and then we wrap up the entertainment on Sunday afternoon with a tribute to Etta James.” The fair wouldn’t be complete without the Midway and owner Brenda Mediera of Shooting Star Amusements said for the adventurous, there’s a new ride in town. The Kamikaze is a 19-metre spinning, scissoring, hangingupside-down-adrenaline rush with sound effects, speed and jaw-dropping acceleration. It fits 32 people and swings like a pendulum moving backward and forward and then turning a full circle. “It begins in silence and then as you speed up, it starts this eerie whirring. It’s really scary,” said Mediera. Over the years, the fair has seen many changes in entertainment from wartime military displays to lemon-slicing contests and the musical ride, but what’s stayed the same is the reason people come to the fair. “People want a taste of the country,” said Haley. “It’s a chance for kids to reconnect with where their food comes from as well as enjoy an inexpensive day out with family or friends.” Whether it’s for the exhibits, entertainment or gravity-defying rides, fair organizers are hoping to top last year’s attendance of 27,000. In 2009, the event was evaluated as Top Fair in B.C. with attendance over 20,000. The goal is to keep that number growing. Admission is $11; $8/youth 13-18; $4/7-12; and children under six are free. Seniors 65 and older and special needs people get to see the fair for $4 with caregivers getting in for free. A three-day pass purchased on Friday is $22. For a full entertainment line up and contest schedule, please go to www.viex.ca.
A unique delivery that is testing Nanaimo’s port operations is nearing completion and officials say the project is a success so far. Since June, the Nanaimo port has received 55 massive wind turbines destined for the Island’s first wind farm off of Cape Scott. The turbines are comprised of three sections weighing between 35 and 50 tonnes, and when built will stand 80 metres high with each fan blade extending 50 metres. Six deep sea vessels were already successfully unloaded, with one more expected in two weeks and the final vessel expected in September. Doug Peterson, Nanaimo Port Authority’s manager of marketing and sales, said the project is an opportunity for the port to showcase its potential and attract other non-traditional business to the facility. “It’s been a very fluid operation and we’re very optimistic,” said Peterson. “This is an excellent opportunity for the port to show what it can do as far as heavy cargo goes here on the Island.” The port put the contract together with Vestas, manufacturer of the turbine. International Power Canada is building the wind farm and investing about $300 million while creating 150 jobs. Once complete, the wind farm is expected to generate enough energy to power 30,000 homes. The turbine parts will be trucked by specialized equipment at a later date closer to their installation site. The new business ties into the port’s Path 2025 strategy, developed to broaden it services to the shipping industry.

Power outage is a warningg There’s a lesson to be learned in India’s three days of blackouts. The massive power outage in the heavily populated country led to various blame games and left up to 600 million people with a cruel reminder of just how reliant we are on the power-grid system. Trains were left stationary on tracks, factories were brought to a standstill and the sweltering heat became all the more sweltering for those with no RELIANCE electricity. National Geographic ON today’s covers the possibility that computer intense solar storms on technology the sun could impact much could spell on Earth that relies on future trouble. computerization. From GPS systems to the power grid, the article (and similar documentaries on PBS and elsewhere) warned that, if Earth experiences what it did during a solar event in the 1800s, we could be sent back to a literal dark age. And, imagining just how fast that genial neighbour can turn into a raving, violent survivalist is a frightening read. If nothing else, the blackouts in India, like earthquakes closer to home, should offer all of us a reminder to be prepared for that day when our phones don’t work, our ovens won’t turn on, our furnace won’t fire up and the food in our fridges will start to spoil. Do you have an emergency kit in your home? If the power went out right now, do you have enough food and water and supplies to last you a week? A month? Probably not. And with the demand for power continuing to grow alongside technology, we’re not likely to be cutting back on electrical use anytime soon despite all the warning to do so. Which is why we should all use the India blackouts as a reminder to take a few hours to prepare for the worst instead of ignoring it

Pipeline foes neither gullible nor ill-informed To the Editor, Re: Many B.C. residents buy into campaign against pipelines, Guest Comment, Aug. 7. Don Olsen makes some interesting arguments in trying to spin the pipeline proposals into a nationalist issue – that opponents are either uneducated or antiCanadian. His assertion that Aboriginal Canadians and environmentalists do not possess the knowledge of pipelines or have access to the resources to fund an opposition campaign are especially troubling. Is Olsen privy to the finances of either entity? How can he make a blanket statement on what First Nations know about pipelines? I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks that suggesting that one’s heritage makes you simply unqualified to speak on a matter is at best offensive, at worst some form of bigotry. I guess I am supposed to feel some sympathy for Alberta-based oil companies and their overworked/underpaid executives when Olsen goes on to describe how ‘discounted’ Alberta oil is. I wasn’t aware that Alberta was suffering from this crisis at all. That’s a pretty compelling reason to stop selling oil to America and sell to the Chinese. I wonder what would happen to the U.S. economy if it was made to be even more dependent on Middle East oil. And by extension, our economy as its linked to America’s economy. Interesting scenarios come to mind. Olsen would have readers believe that we’re all gullible and being swayed by black-ops work of the CIA and other agencies. Maybe we just don’t want pipelines from the most destructive environmental catastrophe sending oil across our landscape – and no amount of political theatrics from Christy Clark (or others) can change that. And there’s another issue. When are we going to realize that the future of energy isn’t oil at all? The power of the sun gives to the Earth in one hour more energy than all of Earth requires in a year. The fact that we have not yet discovered the technology to harness that energy doesn’t mean that it can’t be done – it means we have failed to see past the ends of our noses when it comes to energy policy. We spend billions of dollars on oilenergy sector subsidies while paying lip service to the new energy sources. In case Olsen or anyone else wasn’t watching, Greenland is melting. This is a product of the climate change through human activity that so many in the Big Oil group-think choose to ignore. Ignore all you want, but the effects of having one quarter of the world’s freshwater supply suddenly melted and released into the oceans will kill millions. Rising sea levels and altered weather patterns will put us into uncharted territory. Yet Olsen is fixated on pipelines. No, B.C. residents aren’t opposed to the pipeline proposals because they’re gullible or stupid, they are opposed because they are informed – and know the difference between right and wrong. Marina proposal comes at heavy cost
To the Editor, Re: Critics float marina worries, Aug. 7. Nanaimo’s harbour, according to Nanaimo Port Authority’s website, is the “heart and soul” of the city and a place where the “community keeps beat with the rhythm of the sea.” The harbour Boat Basin is an especially vital and lively place where real life contrasts, from fishing boats to luxury yachts, ferries to runabout dinghies, Snuneymuxw canoes to Chinese dragon boats, seaplanes to sailboats, make this harbour one of the most unique and picturesque on the West Coast. Encircled by Nanaimo’s equally vital downtown and overlooked by the Bastion, Pioneer Square, and shops along the seawall, the harbour really is the heart of this ‘Harbour City.’
NEWS BULLETIN FILE
A company’s plan to spend $9 million on the Boat Basin if it gets a 30-year lease on the site is a bad deal for the city, writer says.
Now, as if appearing out of nowhere, a private company, Pacific Northwest Marina Group, has come forward and offered $9 million to ‘revitalize’ the boat basin in
exchange for an exclusive 30-year lease. Their plans, presented in public meetings and on their website, propose a shiny new marina where “recreational
boaters will enjoy an easy, stress-free, hotel-like experience” and the public will be allowed to stroll along new wheelchair accessible ramps and walkways. Meanwhile, the fishing boats and all vestiges of a real working and diverse harbour will be eradicated. PNMG’s proposal, like a gift from the gods, comes with enticing benefits for a Port Authority that argues the public marina is in need of extensive and expensive revitalization. But at what real cost? With the gift comes a heavy price – the loss of the unique and defining character of the harbour. Is the NPA and the city really so bedazzled by the glitter that they are prepared to sell the soul of Nanaimo? Marie Leduc Nanaimo
Readers respond: Feedback on news items Railway walk photo sends poor message To the Editor, The photograph used on the front page of the July 28 News Bulletin concerning the “water walk” is irresponsible and an invitation to disaster. Never, ever walk on railway tracks and especially balanced on the rail. I worked many years for CN Rail and can tell you first-hand many people are killed and seriously injured by walking the tracks and rails. I will guarantee you have never seen an ankle bone destroyed by slipping off a rail – steel is very unforgiving and all it takes is one slip and the victim will never walk the same again. How many unfortunate people have died right here on Vancouver Island by walking along the track, wearing ‘earbuds’ and oblivious to approaching trains? Railway tracks are
dangerous and to have a banner photograph of a person sauntering along the track, on the front page of this newspaper, is unforgivable. i For goodness sake, a little common sense please – it may save a life. Walk the E&N Trail by all means, but stay off the tracks. Richard Leadbetter Nanaimo

Marina proposal requires rethinking To the Editor, Re: Proposal for marina raises questions, Letters, Aug. 11. Alan MacKinnon was right on in asking the question, “is the Harbour City suddenly too lazy or too inept to husband our own jewel of a resource for our own benefit?” Hopefully our city fathers will regroup and readjust their thinking and not hand over everything to a private company. Since when are we too dumb to do our own planning? City voters take note, it is time to question the madness of such a proposal. Eleanor Miller Nanaimo
City’s focus on growth without ‘Plan B’ troubling To the Editor, I’m troubled by Nanaimo fiscal objectives – emphasis is growth and development. Are there any safeguards (Plan B)? For example, Kingsway Group of Companies grossed $630 million in 2005-06 and committed themselves to even bigger projects. The economy changed. In 2008 Kingsway was out of business. It ‘speculated’, gambled and lost. At the same time, Nanaimo
built a conference centre. It cost millions to build. It continues to cost millions. Same result? Not at all, there’s a captivated crowd that coughs up every year. The legacy of miscalculations is borne into a distant future. Instead of learning from this, even bigger megabuck projects are underway. Does this mean even more borrowing? Everything is promotional: NEDCorp, positive
performance survey claims, communications officer, growth, expansion, etc. A friend who works for a moving company says for every one inbound call, there are 10 outbound calls. Recent news articles report 40 per cent of homeowners are in arrears with taxes. Another article highlights budget deficits. Does this mean more taxes? With another year of drought inflation on the horizon, and with other
economic time-bombs, here, everywhere, isn’t Nanaimo increasingly more vulnerable? Budget deficits, legacy debts, are indicators of patterns. Am I the only Nanamoite cringing any time there’s talk of a hotel, water purification plant, fire hall? Kingsway’s owner paid the ultimate price. Who pays when Plan A fails? Victor Blazevic Nanaimo

Hairstylist claims major honour A Nanimo hairstylist can honestly say his work is a cut above. Edwin Johnston of Cutting Room Creative was awarded the North American Hairstyling Award Master Stylist of the Year July 22 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. It is Johnston’s first NAHA win. The awards are the most prestigious photographic beauty competition in North America and celebrate the skill and professional salon artistry of today’s leading stylists across several categories of excellence. The association is part of PBA
Beauty Week, hosted annually by Cosmoprof North America. The Master Hairstylist of the Year award is the most exclusive award. Finalists must be invited by PBA to compete and must submit a five-image, cohesive collection that shows mastery in styling. Water safety steps encouraged Recent pool-related toddler fatalities are a sobering reminder that with the warm weather, the risks around pools in public places and backyards increases. The B.C. Coroners Service strongly urges everyone to be extra-vigilant in keeping children safe around water. Coroners’ statistics show that close to 30 per cent of pool-related fatalities involved preschool-aged children (ages 1-4 years). All preschooler pool deaths occurred in residential pools (backyard or townhouse/ apartment complexes). Pool drowning among young children is preventable. Here are

Run for Life committee co-chairmen Jason Nelson, left, and Greg Scott, congratulate Mai Pham, top pledge earner. She won a two-night stay at the Old House Village Hotel and Spa in Courtenay and a gift certificate from Frontrunners for raising $1,800 in support of the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital emergency department. The event raised $21,500 for the cause.
Runners help ER reno Mai Pham knows first hand the importance of the emergency department at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Having seen her father treated in the hospital and knowing how busy the ER can be, Pham was inspired to pledge her support for the new emergancy department under construction through the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation’s annual Run for Life. And those efforts made her the top pledge earner, raising $1,800 for the cause. “It is important for everyone in town to do a little bit for our hospital,” she said. The 2012 fun run/walk celebrated its ninth year at the end of May, with more than 160 participants raising $21,500. Run committee co-chairman Greg Scott said pledges to the cause were double of past years. “This increased awareness of the emergency department’s needs simply because more conversations took place,” he said. All proceeds benefit the foundation’s effort
to supply lifesaving equipment for the new ER. The foundation is nearly 75 per cent toward completing its $4 million pledge for equipment purchases. The emergency department is scheduled to open this fall. For more information, please go to www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com.
tips to help reduce the risk. Actively supervise – Active supervision means staying within reach or sight of a child at all times. Closely supervise children when swimming, bathing or playing around water – even those who can swim. Create barriers – If you have a backyard pool, ensure it is fenced on all four sides with a selfclosing, self-latching gate. When not using your pool, clear all toys out of the water and away from the edge, so they cannot tempt children to the water’s edge. Get trained – Get trained through swimming and water safety lessons. Contact your local community centre for child and adult swimming lessons.

arts Solo set
Two lead singers of successful Canadian bands take the stage as solo artists at Vancouver Island Exhibition
A
lan Frew and Dallas Smith set up a one-two punch as headline performers at this year’s Vancouver Island Exhibition. Smith, who spent a decade at the front of the popular rock band Default, changes gears and turns his solo efforts to country music. To Smith, country music has always been about the special combination of voice and song and he travelled to Nashville to work with some of the best in country music for his first solo album Jumped Right In. His performance caps off a Friday lineup on the mainstage that begins in the morning at 11 a.m. with folk legend Valdy, who won two Juno Awards, recorded 13 albums and had his songs recorded by artists in all types of music genres. At 1 p.m., Que Bola Magic adds a bit of unreality to the show with a series of illusions. Hope King, 17-year-old from the Cowichan Valley, performs her mix of old and new country at 3 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., Damian Marshall performs music from his album Built to Last. The Jardines,
a roots, country and pop mother-daughter duo, perform at 7:30 p.m. Smith wraps up the countrythemed night at 9:30 p.m. Audiences get to do it all over again on Saturday, beginning with Que Bola Magic at 11 a.m. and followed by The Steady at 1 p.m., a Nanaimo-based quartet who write simple, clear rock songs. The music continues with The Royal Canadians at 3 p.m., a group of teens making waves since recording their first album. At 5:30 p.m., pop-rock group Afterglow performs, followed by father-son rock trio Braeden Marshall at 7 p.m. The night wraps up with Alan Frew at 9 p.m., more commonly known as the lead singer for Glass Tiger. The Juno Award-winner and Grammy nominee has two albums out under his solo banner. He also wrote the theme song I Believe for the 2010 Winter Olympics, which became a number 1 hit in record-breaking time. He also wrote the new theme for the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team called Free to Be (This is Canada’s Song). On Sunday, an afternoon
of music starts with the annual VIEX Vocal Challenge at 10:30 a.m., followed by another performance by Que Bola Magic at 12:15 p.m. Twins Carli and Julie Kennedy pick up the fiddle and the guitar to perform original country music, beginning at 1:45 p.m. The day wraps up with a tribute to Etta James, sung by Jona Kristinsson at 3:15 p.m. That’s not it for entertainment, though – a community festival stage runs Thursday to Sunday (Aug. 16-19) and features performances by music groups, square dancers, jazz quartets, bellydancers, children’s entertainer Rick Scott, clowns, Taekwondo demonstrations and a pieeating contest. More performances and demonstration groups take place throughout the fair. The fair opens Thursday, with opening ceremonies set for 6:30 p.m. Admission for opening night is a nonperishable donation to the food bank. For the rest of the weekend, admission ranges from $4-$11. For more information, please visit www.viex.ca.

Alan Frew, top, and Dallas Smith headline separate nights at this weekend’s Vancouver Island Exhibition. Three days of music and entertainment is scheduled for the annual agricultural fair.

DEVON JOINER earns master’s degree in music from prestigious school.
Pianist Devon Joiner returns to Nanaimo for a concert filled with emotional, dramatic and charming music. The program will take the audience through the classics of Beethoven and Mozart to virtuosic Liszt and the jazzy style of George Gershwin. “I’m really looking forward to the intimate setting of The Port Theatre lobby,” Joiner said. “It allows me to interact more closely with the audience and for them to become more involved in
the experience.” Joiner, who recently graduated with his master’s degree in from the Juilliard School in New York, also recently returned from a fiveweek adventure in Africa teaching arts empowerment workshops and performing throughout Tanzania. Joiner volunteered with eight other Juilliard-trained teaching artists at four schools with students ages 3-25 to help students build important skills including confidence, teamwork, expression and individuality through the arts. Author discusses nutrition ideas
The author of a book that says people are barking up the wrong tree when it comes to dealing with digestive problems discusses his new book at Harbourfront library Wednesday (Aug. 15). Van Clayton Powel wrote You Are Not What You Eat after researching his own digestive health issues. “We’ve become obsessed with what to eat,” he said. “Or lately, what not to eat. Yet digestion problems in the West are at an all-time high.” Powel said people ignore an important part of the equation when it comes to digestive health – how we eat. “Many of our common eating habits can wreak havoc on digestion,” Powel said. “If your digestion isn’t working properly, it’s impossible to be healthy, no matter how nutritious your food is.” One of his examples which he discusses in the book is eating between meals. He argues that your stomach would much prefer to deal with one meal at a time, pointing to a study of 7,000 people that found eating between meals was one of seven major factors that could shorten life. In the book, he offers seven steps to enhance digestion. “In my case they took me from a severely restricted diet – no wheat or gluten, no dairy, no chocolate – to today when I can eat anything I want again.” Powel is a former registered psychiatric nurse, specializing in addictions treatment and emergency psychiatric assessments. He spent years in Asia training in traditional medical systems, martial arts and yoga. Powel’s presentation starts at 6:30 p.m. For information, please visit www.youarenotwhat youeat.com.

sports Raiders get tied up by Rams Inbrief I
sports
JUNIOR FOOTBALL team’s home opener ends in 31-31 draw.
Junior Pirates end off season
The Nanaimo Palladian Pirates went on an impressive run to qualify for provincials, but once there, they didn’t have another win streak in them. The city’s B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League team went winless at the provincial championships in Whalley this past weekend. The Pirates fell 6-0 to the Langley Blaze on Thursday, lost 4-0 to the Victoria Mariners the next day and then lost 7-3 to the Vancouver Cannons on Saturday. In the first game, Aiden Goodall and Thomas Negrin had two hits apiece. The second game, offence was harder to come by as Shawn Arabsky had Nanaimo’s only hit. The finale saw Goodall go 4-for-4 at the plate.

The V.I. Raiders and the Langley Rams were an even match in Week 2. The challenge now for the B.C. Football Conference’s two first-placed teams will be to distinguish themselves as the season continues. The Raiders and Rams tied 31-31 on Saturday at Nanaimo’s Caledonia Park. “It was a good offensive game,” said Matthew (Snoop) Blokker, Raiders coach. “Both defences struggled to stop the scoring and both offences kept the pressure on for most of the game.” V.I.’s home opener was a backand-forth game, as the visitors led 8-0 but the home team got up 14-8 by halftime. The Raiders extended the lead to 31-23 in the fourth quarter, but the Rams answered with a touchdown and a two-point convert. Each team had one more possession to try to break the tie, but the Rams’ 47-yard field goal attempt with no time left was unsuccessful. “The game ended and to us, we really felt like it was a loss and to them, it really felt like it was a win…” Blokker said. “I understand coming back and tying a game, how that would make you feel more of a positive than being in the lead and then losing it to get a tie.” Raiders quarterback Jordan Yantz threw for 416 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions on 22-for-31 passing. His primary target was Dustin Rodriguez, who caught a touchdown and four other balls for 133 yards total. Matt Sawyer had two TD grabs, Whitman Tomusiak had five catches for a TD and 91 yards and Mike Schaper had 74 receiving yards. Blokker said Yantz had a strong game but suggested the quarterback will be thinking more about

the final, fruitless drive, than the four passing TDs. “We had a good opportunity and decent field position to drive down and get some points and it didn’t happen…” said the coach. “When we have the ball and a chance to go out and win the game, we’ve got to put a drive together.” The Raiders only had 63 rush yards, 44 of those from the QB. Blokker said the team was having success with a five-receiver
set, so it was just a matter of sticking with what was working offensively. “It got us 31 points and at the end of the day, 31 points should be enough to win a game,” he said. Defensively, Jon Jones had eight tackles and a fumble recovevery and shared a sack with Ash Gayat, who had five tackles and a forced fumble. Dylan Chapdelaine and James Riley made eight tackles apiece.
GAME ON … The Raiders (1-0-1) play the Okanagan Sun (1-1) on Saturday (Aug. 18) at 5 p.m. at Caledonia Park … Mark Mueller’s field goal and four converts against the Rams give him 366 career points and move him past former Raiders kicker Scott Dixon (361) into second place all-time in B.C. Football Conference scoring. Raiders alumnus Andrew Harris holds the record (504). sports@nanaimobulletin.com
Basketball Mariners take on NCAA’s Northwestern State Demons Basketball season tips off in style this summer. T h e Va n c o u v e r Island University Mariners men’s b-ball team plays host tonight (Aug. 14) to the Nor thwester n State Demons of the NCAA’s Div. 1.
VIU has been training infor mally for much of the off-season, but hasn’t had a chance to have all its guys together for anything like game action. So tonight they’ll just go out and play. “These guys have all played at a high level
and they know how to play the game,” said Matt Kuzminski, Mariners coach. “It won’t be completely structured but it shouldn’t be too bad.” He’s interested to see how the M’s fare against a live opponent instead of scrim-
maging amongst themselves. “They’re probably getting tired of playing against each other all summer, for one,” he said. “And a lot of the guys have made some significant improvements as far as their strength and
conditioning so it will be good to see where we’re at with that, especially against a team that might be a little bigger, faster and stronger than us.” Kuzminski said he hopes the game creates excitement for the coming season.
“It’ll be fun basketball and for local fans, it’s a chance to see some high-level basketball in the summer. We don’t always get an opportunity for that.” GAME ON … Tipoff tonight is 6 p.m. at the VIU gym. Admission is $2-5.
A Nanaimo golfer is among the very best in the country. Mark Valliere placed fourth at the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s junior boys’ championships July 31-Aug. 3 in Bridgewater, N.S. Valliere shot rounds of 76, 74, 68 and 68 to finish two strokes over par, three strokes behind winner Adam Svensson of Surrey.
Beach v-ball players golden Two Nanaimo volleyball duos were the best on the beach. Robbie Calvin and Wes Richardson and Victoria Behie and Brooke Shouldice won their respective U16 titles at the Volleyball B.C. beach provincials at Vancouver’s Spanish Banks over the August long weekend. Calvin and Richardson prevailed out of 16 teams in their division, winning their final 21-18, 21-18. Behie and Shouldice captured their division with a 21-19, 21-15, 15-12 win.

Nanaimo White Rapids water polo player Josh Todd takes a shot on net during team practice last Wednesday at Bowen Park’s Kin Pool. B.C. Summer Swimming Association water polo provincials got underway Monday at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre.
Congratulations to the PeeWee AA Pirates on a great season!
Some sports fans might have the wrong impression of water polo, says the White Rapids team captain. They might think the players are passing the ball around and shooting lackadaisically. “It’s not even close to that…” said Jackson James. “It’s very, very tough. Water polo’s very underrated.” Swim clubs from across the province have all sent their best under-18 teams to Vancouver Island this week for the B.C. Summer Swimming Association championships at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. Gareth Saunders, who coaches the team along with Brad Cioban, Philip Bourgeois and Ian Mattock, said water polo is sort of a cross between soccer and basketball. Water polo is played seven-a-side, and three of the seven players in the pool must be females. Games consist of four eight-min-
ute quarters. The goals are shaped like smaller soccer nets but the strategy is more like basketball. Teams tend to try to get the ball inside to the ‘hole’ player, sort of like a centre in basketball, who will then look for a shot on goal or try to distribute the ball to an open teammate. “It’s very tough in there,” said James, of playing the hole position. “You’ve just got to have a lot of tolerance in there and make sure not to overreact [to rough play]. You just play the game.” The White Rapids will try to play a fast-breaking style this week at provincials, hoping their speed can help them compete with some bigger teams. The Rapids’ water polo program was revived this year mostly for the purpose of competing at provincials. “We haven’t got a lot of game experience, but we have lots of good swimmers which transfers over well to water polo,” Saunders said. James said he’s interested to see how the team fares. “We’d like to compete and maybe win a couple games and see what we can do.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com
