The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has shown it is still one of the top pipe bands in the world, placing third at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. And its junior bands shone, with its Grade 3 Robert Malcolm Memorial band taking first place in the Grade 3A category and its young Grade 4 band also placing third. The bands performed under sunny skies that drew a crowd of well over 35,000 spectators. The Grade 1 band hoped for better after playing strong. “This is the best we’ve played all year,” says Pipe Sgt. Jack Lee, calling the band’s sound as tight and polished as it has ever been. “We’re disappointed, we thought we played well, particularly in the medley and were hoping for better. The sentence handed down to former RCMP Cpl. Benjamin Monty Robinson is a disgrace. It leaves the justice system in ill repute. Everyone involved in this obstruction of justice case should do all they can to see the sentence is changed to more properly fit the crime, and the criminal. Robinson was the officer in charge of a four-man RCMP squad who Tasered Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski to death at the Vancouver Airport in October, 2007. One year later, in October, 2008, he was at a party in South Delta. He left and, while driving home, struck and killed a 21-year-old motorcyclist, Orion Hutchinson. Robinson had his children in the car and immediately left the scene of the crash with them. He went home, downed several shots of vodka, and then returned to the scene. He was charged and eventually convicted of obstruction of justice. On Friday, July 27, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Janice Dillon sentenced Robinson to a 12-month conditional sentence on the obstruction of justice charge. One month is to be served under house arrest. He received no jail time. Robinson did not resign from the RCMP until July 20, the day his sentencing hearing began. He will receive an RCMP pension, recognizing all his years in the force, including the past four years, where he has been paid while not working. Dillon’s sentence completely glossed over the fact Robinson was an RCMP officer. As such, any conviction on an obstruction of justice charge is far more serious than in other circumstances. She also said he deserved a lighter sentence because he is of native extraction, a statement that has drawn scorn from numerous aboriginal leaders. The sentence must be appealed. It cannot be allowed to stand, if we truly believe police must be held to a higher standard when they are convicted of breaking the law. – Black Press

Seven dinosaurs speak on reading The retired primary teachers of B.C. represent a great pool of experience and common sense. They have taught through the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and so on up to today. They have had ”a new focus on reading” (George Abbott, Minister of Education) four or five times in their careers. They took a lot of flak for being dinosaurs when IRA (the Independent Reading Alphabet) became popular in the ’60s, when Individualized Reading was the buzzword of the ’70s, when Whole Reading had its heyday, and when Guided Reading came into fashion. Dinosaurs took the best bits of those trends and incorporated them into practice in their classrooms. Dinosaurs say the early primary curriculum is too broad. The school day is still five hours long, the school year is still 190 days long, but the curriculum has tripled. I had four curriculum guides in 1971 when I started teaching: language arts, math, PE/fine arts, and themes (which meant social studies/ science). They were thin books. When I retired in 2009 I had 14

Grade 1s need to learn to read. They could learn global and cultural understanding and environmental stewardship, but they don’t need to. They don’t need information and communications technology or applied skills yet, and they don’t need 42 learning outcomes on fine arts. Dinosaurs remember when the school morning had few interruptions except fire drills. Reading instruction needs a dedicated block of time—at least 90 minutes, every day. There can be no interruptions for assemblies, visiting performances, fundraising projects, neighbourhood clean-ups, or PE

during this block of time. Dinosaurs don’t do free play, not for Grade 1. Many first-year classrooms have up to 45 minutes of free play—often it’s boys with cars and blocks, girls with dress-up clothes and felt pens. I know, I know, play is learning too. But dinosaurs want the play directly related to curriculum. They value learning activities that expand and practise what was taught in the morning, rather than the toys already encountered in daycare, pre-school, and kindergarten. Out of the mouths of dinosaurs, “I wish we had readers again.” Readers (the books) have accumulated vocabulary whereas anthologies and trade books do not. Readers build on the vocabulary of previous stories while anthologies have new vocabulary in each story, causing many students to struggle and fall behind. Success is the most important factor in teaching reading. Children must see their own progress, and teachers must show it to them by their choice of resources and strategies. and John, were nonsensical and often ridiculed, but they were fine with six year olds! Children love nonsense, and the joy of their success was motivating. Retired primary teachers want to restore librarians and resource teachers to pre-Christy (2001) levels. I don’t believe it will happen; the government has other fiscal priorities. Too bad: reading won’t improve much without them. Ambitious educators go for the latest popular trend. Phonics, spelling, and printing are necessary, but not sparkly. Sight words (learned by rote, not phonetic) are not flashy either, but you can’t read without them, “said, many, come.” Dinosaurs care more about student progress than their own career track. They hope the new focus on reading won’t impose methods and scheduling on teachers already teaching reading well. We must ensure racists don’t feel at home I am deeply saddened by the brutal loss of life and injury of members of the Sikh community in Wisconsin. I feel this senseless and racist attack at a place of worship is not the act of a madman nor is it a random act of violence—this attack was a well organized and targeted attack by a racist group who sought to target and attack the Sikh community in Wisconsin. Many people blame slack gun control laws but it is my belief that by controlling gun violence we will not be able to stop extreme racist groups from committing attacks against minority groups. I have lived too long, have seen similar attacks here in B.C. and have heard of other senseless acts of violence motivated by racism across the world. The seeds of ignorance are fertilized by hate and racism, these same seeds burn mosques, synagogues and temples, create gunmen to murder innocent kids in Norway, and now open fire on innocent worshippers in a gurdwara. The fruits of these seeds of ignorance are bitter, poisonous and deadly. Ignorant racists do not care about the differences in faith and practices or whether the victims of their crimes are women or children but rather actively seek vulnerable targets,

like Nirmal Singh Gill who was the victim of an act of racism in Surrey. Racists and white supremacists cause fear in the wider community to demonstrate their force and power. It would be naïve to think that groups like these do not congregate and meet in secret even locally. They wait in hiding and seek any opportunity to create hatred among people of all colours, religion, and ethnicity. Our communities should not live in fear but must unite to show racists that our communities are happy to live in harmony and have an intercultural understanding of one another. Education will not help racist groups—the only language they understand is strict law enforcement and appropriate consequences to deter them from criminal and racist acts. I would like to extend my sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of this tragic incident. I strongly denounce this racist act of violence and am determined to not watch our community live in fear. Rather we should unite and organize a defence through education and intercultural understanding against white supremacists to ensure no minority group will suffer from

Just look at his Twitter page and you’ll see just where his focus is. Over the past decade, Richard Lee has done anything but represent his constituents. Where has Richard Lee been when it comes to the proposed Kinder Morgan Canada pipeline twinning that Burnaby North residents are concerned about? He hasn’t mentioned one word. This is just one issue. Richard Lee and his BC Liberal government have increased our debt from $30 billion to more than $60 billion during the good economic times that the Liberals have had the fortune to be in power. And all the while they

have blamed and continue to blame the NDP for the tough times B.C. faced during the ’90s that were actually due to external economic factors in Asia and elsewhere. Worth a closer look My wife presented me with a toonie that fell out of my pocket. As I held it I noticed the rough edges. My fingers are more sensitive than my eyes. So I took a magnifiying glass for a closer look (A buddy had given me the magnifying glass so we could look at maps a little more accurately but that’s another story) To my delight I found a lot of very interesting and very small details on this coin. Now with the population of Canada aging, why does the Canadian Mint feel it’s necessary to incorporate such interesting details when the youth of today wouldn’t even notice? I’m not saying to make a five dollar coin the size of a hockey puck—I’d have to wear suspenders just to hold my pants up.

a Weighty argument Re: One off the top (Editorial, NewsLeader, Aug. 10) Those who oppose a law on mandatory bicycle helmets should be asked if they similarly oppose a law on driver seatbelts and helmets for construction crews and motorcyclists. More bikes does not equal more drivers watching out. Cars, trucks, and pedestrians are already numerous, yet are regularly hit by drivers. This proves that the small population of bicycles is not any reason why drivers routinely hit them. Greater numbers does not equal greater safety. Drivers hit cyclists (and pedestrians) mainly because drivers feel protected by their car’s greater weight vis-a-vis the weight of the bike, cyclist, or pedestrian. Needed is a serious, low weight limit on the auto industry so that (future) drivers are scared of being hurt and thus drive more carefully. Thang Vu Burnaby

Burnaby boys big help in capturing Canadian crown Hastings squad visit Blue Jays before going to Little League World Series Five Burnaby boys are off to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. The Hastings Community Little League all-star team defeated Lethbridge 11-1 in Edmonton on Saturday to capture the Canadian title. Cole Dalla-Zanna of Burnaby was the winning pitcher going four innings and Steven Morretto hit a three-run homer to lead Hastings. Dalla-Zanna also led the tournament in batting average at .579, while Morretto was tops in runs driven in with 13. Hastings went through the tourney undefeated in seven games outscoring their opposition 74-2. Noah Hanson-Stafford of Burnaby had a .438 average while Carson Ho was right behind him at .429. Kolby Buljevic had a .292 average with five RBI. One of the team’s assistant coaches is Morretto’s father, Rob, who is a former B.C. Lions defensive back. After the game, the team flew to Toronto where they attended the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees game. They got to meet several Blue Jays and were also introduced to the crowd. Their first game in Williamsport will be Friday at 10 a.m. PDT when they will take on Mexico. All of their games will be

broadcast live on either TSN or TSN2. Hastings also won the Canadian title in 2009 and lost 2-1 to Mexico in extra innings in their first game at the Little League World Series. The Hastings catchment covers parts of East Vancouver and Burnaby (north of the Lougheed Highway and east of Sperling). • The previous weekend, the Burnaby Braves won the provincial mosquito AA championship by downing Oceanside from the Parksville area of Vancouver Island 13-2 in the final. Burnaby pitcher Matthias Vaid struck out five and allowed just two hits and one run in three innings to be named game MVP in the final. After catching the first three innings, catcher Nicholas Macpherson took over the mound for the final three innings. Simon Bailie had a triple and a single in driving in three runs. The Braves downed Penticton 16-8 in the semifinal with Mathew Ponis hitting a home run and driving in three runs. Burnaby began the tournament by defeating Gibsons 13-2 before moving on to beat Oceanside 16-12 and Surrey 5-1 while losing to Vernon 13-10.

At the airport she was surrounded by not only reporters, photographers and videographers, but Canadian fans, particularly little girls and boys. She more than willingly obliged, posing for pictures, especially with the young ones. “I’m hoping what our soccer team has done for soccer and women’s sports in Canada, that will be better than the medal,” she told the throng at the airport Monday. That may just be Christine Sinclair’s greatest legacy or triumph: inspiring young Canadians. And that looks just as good on her as the bronze medal.

Thunder take out Lakers The Burnaby Lakers first appearance in the Western Lacrosse Association playoffs since 2008 didn’t last long. The Langley Thunder, first-place finishers during the regular season, defeated the Lakers 11-10 at Bill Copeland Arena on Thursday to sweep their best-ofseven semifinal in four games. The Thunder jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period with the visitors’ third goal coming with five seconds left by Athan Iannucci. But Burnaby bounced

back in the second with four consecutive goals and went to the third period holding a 7-6 lead. In the third, Iannucci scored twice to give Langley an 11-9 lead just past the midway point and then hung on from there with Burnaby only managing to score on a Matt Quinton penalty shot with 11 seconds left. It was Quinton’s third goal of the game. Scott Jones scored twice and had two assists. Dane Stevens had a goal and three

assists while Colton Clark had four helpers for Burnaby. Single goals went to Trevor Moore, Chase Williams, Scott Tinning and Peter McFetridge. Langley will face the winner of the Coquitlam-Victoria semifinal which was tied 2-2 heading into Game 5 Tuesday. • Burnaby bench boss Bob Johnson was named WLA coach of the year, while the team was named the most sportsmanlike. No Lakers made either the first or second all-star teams.

SFU gets final NCAA approval Simon Fraser University has officially been admitted as the first Canadian member of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). The final step in the process came Friday with the NCAA’s presidents council approving SFU. That means SFU’s varsity teams will be eligible to compete for NCAA championships, and gives the school voting privileges at future NCAA conventions.

The approval came after the NCAA passed a recommendation to allow Canadian schools in if they have been accepted as a candidate by a U.S. accrediting agency. In SFU’s case it has been accepted as a candidate by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and University and must continue through the accreditation process to remain a NCAA member. All of SFU’s sports teams will be in the midst of training camps within the next week.

B.C. to study online voting

It won’t happen in time for the provincial election next spring, but the B.C. government is moving ahead with Premier Christy Clark’s pledge to examine online voting at the local and provincial level. Some municipalities have suggested modernizing elections to make voting more convenient, and reverse the recent trend to lower voter turnout. Clark proposed the idea during last year’s B.C. Liberal leadership campaign. Justice Minister Shirley Bond announced Thursday that she has asked Chief Electoral Officer Keith Archer to set up an expert panel to make recommendations. Archer asked the government last year to give him authority to conduct pilot projects for electronic voting, and to consider extending voter registration to 16- and 17-year-olds, as has been done in Australia and some U.S. states. During his leadership bid, Health Minister Mike de Jong proposed lowering the voting age from 18 to 16, to encourage younger people to get involved as part of their high school education.
