Kyle Daniels murderer sentenced to seven years in jail

BRIAN MILLS Violet Abraham, mother of slain local Kyle Daniels says she and her family are disappointed with the sentencing hearing of the youth who took the her son's life. Kyle Daniels, was stabbed to death on Feb. 19, 2011 while visiting his father in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, by a 17 year old male (now 18) who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice act. The youth pled guilty to a charge of manslaughter on July 11, 2012. The defendant, who was sentenced to seven years in jail, will be housed in a juvenile facility until he turns 20 in January 2014. He will then be moved to an adult penitentiary to serve the remainder of his sentence. And then he will have, says Abraham, only be six years to serve with the possibility of release in just three years. "I was so mad because we were hoping he would have to serve at least 10 years but it's just six years now and only three years before he could get out, and our whole family is disappointed about that." The seven year sentence was agreed upon jointly by Crown prosecutor Will Collins and defense lawyer Douglas Andrews. The defendant has a significant criminal record and had been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder in 2009. He had stopped taking his medication two months before killing Daniels. But Abraham believes the circumstances call for a longer sentence. "After he did this [crime], he took off back to a house and partied again. Then he told a woman what he'd done to my son. He didn't stay at the scene or turn himself in, he just threw the knife into someone's back yard and went partying," she said. "I was hoping he'd get at least 25 years because of what he did to Kyle, how many times he stabbed him [19] and everything. I think it's [the sentence is] below normal, I think he should have got a longer sentence. Because I lost my baby. I lost my friend. He was supposed to be back the next day and he was killed that night. He

Final sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 28 2012, but Abraham does not hold out much hope that justice will be done. "They asked for a victim impact statement from all of us. From my kids, all them that are having a hard time, from my parents, and my brothers, they all gave an impact statement. We sent it two weeks ago. It seems like it didn't make any difference," she said. "My entire family and friends are disappointed in the way they handled it." Kyle Daniels body was brought back to Burns Lake and is interred here at home. His headstone feast will take place in September.

It’s an idea whose time has come The only downside is that it likely won’t be in place in time for next spring’s provincial election. What is it: The B.C. government has officially requested that the chief electoral officer convene an independent panel to examine the potential for using Internet voting in British Columbia. Justice Minister and Attorney General Shirley Bond has sent a letter to chief electoral officer Keith Archer ‘requesting’ that he appoint an independent panel to review the best practices for Internet voting from other jurisdictions - in both local and provincial contexts - and identify any possible technological or logistical barriers. The independent panel review will help to start a broader conversation about modernizing B.C.’s electoral process. Internet voting is a topic of interest for many British Columbians, as well as a number of B.C. municipalities. The Prince George Chamber of Commerce presented a motion, to the provincial chamber, calling for the province to examine internet voting. That motion was passed at the provincial body’s annual general meeting this spring. The idea of internet voting has also been supported at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. The B.C. government is committed to examining all necessary questions and concerns regarding security, safety, privacy

and anonymity before considering implementation, according to a press release on the matter. “Our province is widely recognized as being technologically progressive and a leader in open government initiatives,” said Bond. “If the independent panel determines we can maintain the utmost electoral integrity, I’m optimistic Internet voting could increase accessibility for British Columbians to participate in the democratic process.” With those who pay attention to politics continually bemoaning low voter turnouts, internet voting is a no-brainer as a mechanism to increase voter turnout. In addition, a higher voter turnout will likely mean people are apt to pay more attention to what their elected officials are doing. We are already seeing the impact social media can, and does, have on governments. We have debated, for decades, ways to get people more involved in elections and political processes. There is one simple way to accomplish that … ensure that individual voices matter. Voter apathy has little to do with not wanting to change the world and everything to do with a sense that voting doesn’t accomplish that change. The internet, and consequently, social media has brought about that empowerment. Internet voting is a step in the right direction towards accomplishing change that will interest and engage the voting public. Bill Phillips is the editor for the Prince George Free Press

Here’s a summer scene being played out all over North America. Family van pulls up to the corner store to stock up on a few camping essentials: pop, chips, hot dogs, a case of beer and a bottle of vodka. Not in B.C. you say? It happens every day at rural agency liquor stores around the province. As with many other issues, there is one reality for urban B.C. and another for the rest of us. Selling booze in grocery stores would presumably create anarchy in B.C cities and towns, but villagers and their visitors somehow manage it, just as everyone does across the line in Washington or Alaska. These rural agency stores are “flyspeck operators,” sniffs an acquaintance who spent his career as a union activist in government liquor stores. Picture dusty old bottles on a rickety shelf, greedy owners and poorly trained clerks more likely to sell to under-age drinkers. Similar generalizations can be heard about the hundreds of private liquor stores that have popped up around B.C. since they were legalized. And in fact there have been more violations in private stores, revealed in sting operations run by liquor inspectors. In the year ended March 31, 54 private stores were caught selling to a minor, for an 84 per cent compliance rate. Only four government stores were caught, a pass rate of 96 per cent. Five rural agency stores were tested, and one flunked. But here is the telling statistic. In 2010, the government allowed liquor inspectors to employ actual minors to test stores. Previously, they hired people who looked young but were old enough to buy alcohol, As late as 2009, two out of three stores (government or otherwise) sold to them. Problem is, that’s not an actual offence. Now liquor inspectors send in undercover teens, and relieve them of the evidence when they are allowed to buy booze. The watchdog now has teeth, and compliance has jumped. The government glossed over the poorer performance of private stores. But in fairness, three times as many private stores as government ones were targeted in the new inspections, and the gap is narrow. Government stores also have a huge built-in financial advantage in their wholesale rate, and are generally overstaffed by private sector standards. The B.C. Liberals also moved this spring to make rural agency stores easier to establish. Regulation changes brought the minimum population served from 300 down to 200, and eliminated a vague requirement for a “bona fide community” to exist around the store. Meanwhile, the big booze story this year is cabinet minister Rich Coleman’s plan to sell B.C.’s warehouse and distribution monopoly to a private contractor. The B.C. Government Employees’ Union has protested, despite assurances that their jobs will continue. B.C.’s burgeoning craft beer industry has looked to Alberta’s all-private model and predicts higher costs. The B.C. Liberal government has been on the defensive from the start, with the NDP pointing to the paper trail of lobbyists with an apparent inside track. It’s great politics, but it matters little to consumers in an increasingly competitive but heavily taxed business. Another new regulation took effect this summer, creating a $525 fine for adults serving minors, on the job, at home or as a bootlegger. Parents who provide booze for their own under-age children are exempted. Previously, penalties applied only to licensed establishments. If the issue really is public safety and teen binge drinking, the key job for government is to regulate sales effectively. Once that is done, no justification remains for government liquor sales. The RCMP is once again enforcing immediate roadside prohibition laws for impaired drivers, after changing the system last year to comply with a B.C. Supreme Court ruling. As reported in the Lakes District News edition of Dec. 5, 2011, Supreme Court Judge Justice Jon Sigurdson ruled that the province's newly instated impaired driving laws were unconstitutional, because they applied penalties without any appeal process. In the Nov. 30, 2011 ruling, Justice Sigurdson decided that under the new law, RCMP had unreasonable powers of search and seizure when it came to drunk drivers whose blood alcohol level is 0.08 per cent or higher. He said the new law results in criminal like consequences for the driver and it leaves them without an option to appeal the decision, which violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The squeaky wheel gets the sawmill
Editor: I hope Burns Lake realizes that their future is a political decision and recent history in the forest industry says your sawmill is not getting rebuilt. Sawmills in McBride, Prince George, Bear Lake are closed, just to name a few. The mishandling of the pine beetle epidemic has left lots of sawmills south of Prince George without fibre. If your sawmill gets rebuilt, which other community loses theirs? The decision will be based on who has the best chance of getting re-elected. Political decisions are based on who makes the most noise, and there is an election coming. People in Burns Lake you have telephones and Internet, which means you have the ability to make rebuilding your
sawmill a hot political issue. That's your best chance. Phone and e-mail every politician, media outlet, organization and friend you can think of. Make sure everybody on Facebook and Twitter knows what happened in Burns Lake. Ask what am I supposed to do now? Get personal. I guarantee that anybody that receives hundreds of calls or e-mails about the same issue from different people will respond. Your story will be told from coast to coast. A community banding together and fighting for its future is a good story. You will gain the respect and sympathy of the people, more questions will be asked, the story will become bigger and soon it will become clear to our gov-
ernment that the smart political decision would be to have the sawmill in Burns Lake rebuilt. It worked in Mackenzie. Pat Bell had to break is own rules to guarantee the pulp mill a fibre supply. Thanks to him and the McLeod Lake First Nation, the mill is up and running. I suggest you ask why the mill does not already have a fibre supply? I hate to say it but under the NDP all mills in B.C. had secure fibre supply. If you do nothing your future looks bleak, if you fight back you can shape your own future. Remember, one person can make a difference, hundreds of individuals working together can change the world. Good luck, Rick Berry Mackenzie

My first taxi was a Chevrolet; best car I ever had
On Friday afternoon there was a celebration of life for Edith Bond held at the United Church. There were many friends and of course her wonderful family. Before the main service there was a family service at the grave sight, this was in the early afternoon with just family present. Pastor Ed Peters conducted the service, giving an excellent address. Margaret Neave and Marie Hunter led the singing of Edith’s favourite songs; ‘How great thou art’ and ‘When Irish eyes are smiling.’ Grandson Nick Bond sang ‘Bridge over troubled waters.’ Alice Armstrong wrote such
a moving poet dedicated to her mother and Ken Bond gave his mother’s eulogy. Edith was such a wonderful mother and also a great friend. Her love of people and family has come down in this special family she has left behind. Although Edith leaves a big family behind there will always be a place proud to be a part of this very fine and loving family. Nice visit Last week Marie and Rick Hunter had Rick’s brother Ken and his wife Sharon from Kamloops drop in for a short visit. Ken and Sharon are very down to earth folks and I was also very fortunate to also visit them. Jo and I visited them many times some years ago when we visited Kamloops. It’s always nice to talk over old times with them. As they say time flies and it sure does. When our daughter Marie was in training in Kamloops, this is also many years ago, we met many nice folks and Jo
kept in contact but I am afraid I have slipped up. Back in 1947 I had a taxi trip to Kamloops for Mr. and Mrs. Sugden. They wanted to get to Mr. Sugden’s brothers funeral. I had less than 12 hours to make it but I just made it. Gravel and washboard roads and dust and rock. I had a bit of sleep turned about and drove home. I sure wouldn’t tackle a drive like that anymore. It was pretty rough on a vehicle with those roads and twice as hard on the driver. There was a little hang up on the way home going through Quesnel, I dropped a tie rod end left side. It was just about closing time so the G.M. garage took me in. They did not have a left hand tie rod end so he welded a right hand one to get me home with the promise I would change it when I got home as it was illegal to weld anything to do with the steering. The weld got me home and I never changed it
I guess I forgot. Anyway the weld held and it was there when 100,000 miles came up and I sold it. This was my first taxi and a Chev and the best car I think I ever had. It came from the G.M. garage in Smithers and we paid $700 for it. It had a new motor and new tires. It was second hand but sure did us well. This was in 1947. It always passed the inspection test right up to the time I let her go. The body was still good with no rust. They don’t make them like that today, but with all the miles I never put a scratch on it. We sold it to Mike and Mable Tetreau at Southbank, they drove it for some time and it did them well. They then sold the car to the Tommy Jack family, they took the body off and made a bennet buggy out of it. They used to go by our place with a team of horses on it. I often said there was a car that
really had a life. Cars had to be tough in those days as the rough gravel roads were a killer. Through all my years in the taxi business was flat tires especially if you were catching the ferry or the train or any emergency, hospital or otherwise. I did have one bad blowout on a rear tire that almost gave me a bad scare as it pulled me into the ditch and almost turned me over, only one like that. Old story I have at hand an old magazine dated July 1954, quite awhile ago, almost 60 years. A number of Burns Lake stores are listed in it but have long gone. Here are the names for interest sake; The Lake Hotel, Star Motor Sale, Star Planer Mills, Beck Hardware, Larry’s Service, V and A Builders, D. Ralph Fleming, Accountant, Babine Lumber, Bill’s Shoe Repair, Funnel’s Variety Store, McConnell Machine Shop, last but not least Decker Lake Auto Camp.
I wonder how many of your oldtimers will remember these places now gone. I almost forgot Burns Lake Hardware is still here and going strong as Home Hardware. It’s still serving the Lakes District well. This magazine is also very interesting with a story called Early Pioneers of Francois Lake written by Tommy Glen who at one time lived on the Brown Rd. Then also there is a picture of the first car in Hazelton Oct. 5, 1911. Times have changed, we take them for granted now as our way of living. If anyone would like to see some of these old magazines stop in as some of them are priceless now. Flower eating deer I had a mystery that’s been bugging me for quite sometime and it’s this. On the veranda of our home I have two large buckets with lovely flowers. The last week or so I have noticed something is
eating off all the flowers. This morning the mystery is solved. Two young deer (does) come up onto the veranda and are eating my flowers. They are just too tame but I guess they like a treat too. There is lots of nice green grass close by but my flowers taste better. They are so pretty who could hurt them. I was just checking on the number of years Francois Lake has had a post office. Since 1910, 100 years right to the nose. Of those 100 years the Neave family have been postmasters for 70 of them. Hard to realize. I will leave you with this blessing. May the trail rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warmly upon your face, may the snow fall softly on the hills around you, and till we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand. God will always love you and so do I.

Unemployment rate up in the Northwest
RBC DONATION Lyle Graham, vice president of the Lakes District Senior Citizens Housing Association accepted a $1,000 cheque from Royal Bank Of Canada, Burns Lake Branch's Leayra Donaldson recently. The donation will be used for facilities upgrades at Tweedsmuir House, Carroll Cottage and Heritage Manor.
New figures released SHAUN THOMAS Northwest BC has the highest unemployment rate in the province, according to stats released on Aug. 10 by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation, and it is the only region in BC in double digits. The unemployment rate for the North Coast and Nechako region, which covers just west of Vanderhoof to Haida Gwaii, was 11.9 per cent this July. That number was down slightly from the 12.2 per cent in June but is the third highest rate this year. When compared to last July's 7.7 per cent unemployment figure, the number is up 4.2 per cent. For the first six months of 2012 the average unemployment rate in the region was 11.9 per cent com-
pared to 8.2 per cent for the first six months of 2011. In terms of the number of people employed, that figure has fallen from 44,300 last July to 38,400, a loss of 5,900 employed people in the northwest. So far this year the number of people employed in the region is down 7.9 per cent while provincially the figure has risen 1.9 per cent. The next highest unemployment rate is in the Cariboo, which has an unemployment rate of 8.1 per cent, followed by the Kootenay region at 6.8 per cent. The lowest unemployment rate in the province was in the Northeast, with an unemployment rate of just 4.3 per cent, while the provincial number is 6.9 per cent.

Explosion rocks residents At approximately 6:37 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, police received a report of a loud explosion and smoke in the area of Walker Road near Francois Lake. Police immediately
testing in the warn range of between 0.06 and 0.08 per cent BAC. These drivers are imposed with a three day driving ban, a $200 administrative penalty and another $250 fee to have their driver's license reinstated. After the law was deemed unconstitutional, some drivers who were fined for impaired driving under the law filed lawsuits seeking reimbursement of the thousands of dollars in fees and fines, however in a July 12, 2012, ruling Justice Sigurdson ruled the B.C. govern-
ment will not have to pay back fines and fees to people convicted under the unconstitutional impaired driving law. Under the B.C. Supreme Court ruling, Justice Sigurdson said the government did not engage in any misconduct or bad faith actions when it enacted the law. He also ruled that anyone with outstanding fees and penalties will have to pay them. The immediate roadside prohibition law for drivers that exceed 0.08 was reinstated June 15, 2012, but with a change that requires RCMP to let all drivers that provide breath samples
above the warning level know about their right to a second breathalyzer test. The lower of the two readings will be taken into consideration. The immediate roadside prohibition law still results in an impaired driver losing their license for 90 days and paying a 30 day vehicle impound fee. They will also have to pay to install an interlock device in their vehicles that requires them to provide breath samples to start and operate the vehicle, plus a $500 fine, a $250 fee to reinstate their licence and $600 for an educa-

Minister of Justice Shirley Bond said, "We certainly believe that the amendments that were brought through the legislature and passed into law meet the concerns in that BC Supreme Court ruling, so in fact we've added new elements that improve the appeal process." She said that since the law was introduced, alcohol-related deaths on the road have dropped by 44 per cent compared to the previous five years.

Burns Lakers heading for senior games The BC Seniors Games is an annual, multi-sport event hosted by a different BC Community each year. They are one of the largest Games organized within BC with approximately 3,500 participants, aged 55 plus from all over the province. The B.C. Seniors Games is a great opportunity, says zone director Arnold Amonson. “Getting to know the people is good, the competition is good and you see people from all over the province.” The 2012 BC Seniors Games will be hosted by Burnaby from
Aug. 21 to 25, 2012. This year’s event will host 3,685 people and marks the 25 anniversary of the games, which are open to anyone 55 and older. The games include sports such as curling, bowling, bridge, golf, soccer, cribbage and track and field. Some events like track and field are also split into age groups, so different age ranges compete against others in their same range. To be involved people need the $15 membership.

A Statement from Enbridge
The Facts On Pipelines Enbridge operates the largest and most complex liquids pipeline system in the world. We’re proud of what we do—helping to provide reliable energy to many millions of people across North America every single day. Over the last decade alone, we’ve transported nearly 12 billion barrels of crude oil with a safe delivery record better than 99.999 per cent. That’s good but, for us, it’s not good enough. Any incident tells us that we must do even better. We will never stop striving for 100 per cent. Operating a complex pipeline system is by its nature a challenging business. This is not new. Enbridge employees have successfully met these challenges for over 60 years—by placing safety at the heart of our operations. We constantly strive to do better. Particularly when it comes to the integrity and viability of our pipelines—which is, and must always be, our number one concern. Pipeline safety has been much in the news lately, and so it’s important to give the issue some context— to look beyond the latest headline and recognize the outstanding long-term safety record of this important energy delivery system. In fact, decades of experience have shown that pipelines are by far the safest, most efficient method of transporting large volumes of oil. Historically, pipelines have had the least amount of releases of any mode of oil transportation. As a result of strenuous efforts within our industry, releases have actually decreased over the past decade—both in terms of the number of releases and the amount of product released. Our goal at Enbridge is—and will continue to be—the prevention of all spills. In 2011 alone we invested about $400 million to ensure the safety and integrity of our system, and that amount is set to increase substantially—to more than $800 million—in 2012. Over the past two years we have doubled the number of staff dedicated to leak detection and pipeline control systems, and substantially strengthened our focus on the tools, technologies and strategies to ensure the fitness of our pipelines. This is not new, but rather part of an ongoing effort to be the best in the business. In the past decade we’ve invested more than $3 billion in safety, integrity and new technology—and we’re planning more investment going forward. We continually evaluate the condition of our pipeline system to ensure long-term reliability and integrity. Enbridge is a Canadian success story, with a hard-earned reputation as a responsible corporate citizen. In a rapidly changing world we will continue to build on that foundation by continuing to adhere to a strong set of core values that reflect what is truly important to us as a company: the safe transportation of energy that millions of people rely on in their daily lives.

Southsider Mike Robertson enjoys writing songs and is looking forward to performing at the Lakes District Fall Fair and Music Festival again this year. "I first played the fall fair 30 some years ago," said Robertson, "the fall fair is a good venue and the audience is always really good as well." Robertson says he didn't start out writing songs. "I started writing poetry as a young boy and my brother was quite an accomplished guitar player. So I never could play my songs, I always sang them to him and he played them. And then finally I bought a guitar in my early twenties and spent the next 35 years trying to learn how to play it," he chuckled. The key to song writing in Robertson's experience is to go with the creative process whenever and wherever it hits. I'm always writing ideas for a song on the back of envelopes or scraps of paper and the secret is to either record the melody or write the words down because if you don't do it right away it's gone, “he said. Some of the venues have changed a little over the years since he first started playing at the fair but that's a good thing he recalls. "I remember in the old days at Tweedsmuir Downs

leaning toward country and folk.' He has played small and large venues both indoors and out, mainly here in the North but also in the U.S.A., including a university in Montana last fall. His claim to fame (he jokes) is that he met and sang with Reba McEntire down in Cheyenne, Wyoming before she became a star. "She was a barrel racer and one of the barrel racers got killed down there and she had a little benefit, so five or six of us sat on hay bales around the campfire and played. And a couple of years later Reba McEntire was all over the radio so I've always been able to say I played with her." He's made some demos and has had a song or two picked up by local artists. "I've had seven songs published so far, nothing top 10 or big names or anything. Mostly regional people have picked them up. I've done some demos in Prince George and Prince George artists have picked them up. I mainly do it just for the pleasure of the word and the song. I like creating stories that I can sing to people. I really do enjoy it." Robertson will be performing at the 69 annual Lakes District Fall Fair and Music Festival at the Eagle Creek Fair Grounds on the week end of Sept. 7 to 9, 2012.

“My Favourite Tragedy” is an Ontario band consisting of North Easton, John-Marc Desmarais and Phil Desmarais. They have a spare week before playing at the Robson Valley Music Festival, and North (nephew of the Littles) wants to perform in the Lakes District. If all 3 come here, it would be a band performance. If just North, a solo act.
Phone: 250-698-7677
Bio: No stranger to the big stage, North Easton has played with artists Great Big Sea, 54-40, I Mother Earth, Wide Mouth Mason, Watchmen, Tal Bachman to name a few and has made a number of TV performances throughout his career including Canada A.M., Breakfast Television, Rogers Daytime and The Mike Bullard Show. With intense vocal stylings comparable to Dave Matthews, Phil Collins and Cat Stevens and his dynamic acoustic flavor, listening and watching him perform is hypnotic and an experience not soon forgotten.

Legion on Friday night and an on going scavenger hunt called ‘Who Let the Pigs Out?’ involving over 20 local businesses and lots of prizes. On Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. the festival shifts to Spirit Square where there will be entertainment artists, vendors, concessions, a concert hosted by the Lakes District Arts Council called the Big Pig Gig, and rides for the kids on the miniature train. And the price is right says Shelley Wall. “There’s not going to be great expense at the park. Except for the dollar to ride the train and the concessions, it’s mostly free,” she said. “The magic show, the clowns, that’s all free, the stage show, just come on down, there’s no charge.” Appearing on stage will be a number of local artists and groups that include Jennifer Reynolds, Flaming Pie, the Tweedsmuir Fiddlers and the Southside Youth Fiddlers. Out-oftowners Carlie and Julie Kennedy will be headlining the stage show as well as appearing at Mulvaney’s Pub on Friday night. All this is in addition to the main draw, which is of course the bike races on Boer Mountain. The bike events begin on Friday night with the kids mini downhill and cross country races. Saturday morning starts with the “Full Boar” downhill race followed after lunch with the Jump Jam and the Rider Cross race. On Sunday spectators can expect to see ‘Dante’s Inferno’ a progressive cross country race that increases by 10 kilometers each year and is currently at a butt numbing 60 kilometers. To view the races and avoid parking hassles on the hill spectators can catch a free shuttle bus ride up to the bike park departing from the College of New Caledonia or from Spirit Square. And if you get a chance to fill out a survey card about the weekend it may be well worth your while, explains Shelly Coxen, sales and marketing executive, also of the

Apple v. Samsung
Riki Ott is coming to
Impassioned lawyers fighting over a $2.5 Billion copywrite infringement case as the fate of a major multinational electronics corporation hangs in the balance. Steve Jobs promised to spend his last dying breath and all of Apple’s money to destroy Google’s Android phone OS, which is used on many of Samsung’s products. Apple seemed determined to carry on Job’s dying wish when it took on Samsung in the courts on July 31,2012. So far Apple has gained an injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 as the company attempts to prove that Samsung intentionally set out to mimic the iPhone and later the iPad. Samsung on the other hand has fired back with a countersuit, and has attempted to prove that it was developing similar products even before the first iPhone was released. However the electronics giant has been dogged by problems that at one point caused Samsung’s lawyer to literally beg the judge to allow evidence that had not been submitted before a deadline, which Judge Lucy Koh denied. The ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung is expected to wrap up late next week, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if someone was already thinking about making this whole spat into a made for TV movie.

ERIC MICHELL
My dear son Eric, it’s been little over 2 years since you left us. It has been really hard for your 2 brothers, your mom and I since your sister Serena went before you. It was harder how I wish you two were home and we could be a complete family again. It’s a big wish that will not be granted but thinking things like that makes us feel better and we visit your and Serena’s graves often. Almost lost for words. Hope it’s better and longer next time. But for now I used to call you Amigo when you wore your big straw hat. So for now Adios Amigo. Love mom and dad Dave and Virginia Michell. Brothers Dave Jr., Darin and family. Nephew Reiley Michell

NELSON, Patricia M.A. It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of a cherished Wife, Mother, Sister and Friend. Pat fought courageously and succumbed to her illness as the sun rose on Aug 1, 2012. She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, John; children Janet, John (Bocar) and Jake; siblings Daphne, Janice and Don (Charlene); her mother-in-law Jean as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Pat had a heart with room in it for everyone. She had a zest for life and made friends wherever she went. Pat was all about community and had a wonderful creative are that was evident in all she did. We will all miss her caring, compassionate and kind spirit for years to come and she will forever be cherished by all who knew her. A Celebration of Pat’s life was held 2:00pm on Sunday August 12, 2012 at the East Delta Hall 10379 Ladner Trunk Road in Delta. In lieu of owers, donations in memory of Pat may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation or your local Food Bank.

William Wren Gilgan 7 July 1917 – 7 August 2012
Bill passed away peacefully on Tuesday at The Pines, with his wife Kay at his bedside, one month after his 95th birthday. He was born in Castor, Alberta, but moved with his family as an infant to homestead on Tchesinkut Lake. One of eleven children, he lived his whole life in the Burns Lake area, with just an absence to serve in the RCAF as a Flying OfďŹ cer Navigator in WWII, and to complete a degree in Forestry at UBC in the post war years. Bill’s employment included the forest industry for much of his adult life, and as planning director for the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako until his retirement in 1983. Post-retirement, he ran a trapline until his early 80’s, served as a Marriage Commissioner for several years and remained involved in local politics over four decades. He was the Burns Lake mayor for two stints totaling 23 years, was the ďŹ rst chairman of the RDBN. Bill was the last surviving charter member of the Burns Lake Rotary club, remaining active from the formation of the club in 1953 until his health began to decline when he reached his 90’s. He was always active in the community, contributing his time and skills to many organizations. He was an avid outdoorsman, life member of the Rod and Gun club, and an accomplished hunter and ďŹ sher, as well as his trapline. Bill was predeceased by parents John and Margaret, brothers Warcup and Tom, sisters Sadie Olson and Margaret Gair, and brothers-in-law Ken Olson, Louis Gair, George Axen, Sam Shaffer and Stewart Forsyth. He is survived by: wife Kathleen (Kay); brothers Patrick (Fluella) and Michael (Norma); sisters Janet Shaffer, Mary Axen, Ruby Forsyth, and Rosalie Hardie; sons Gordon (Corliss), Daniel (Sylvia), Robert (Des), Michael ( Judy), and Maxwell (Laurie); daughter Elizabeth Stewart (Cliff Finch), adopted daughter Terry Morris; stepsons Gene (Linda) Nickel, Arthur (Sandy) Nickel, Joe (Denise) Nickel, and Richard (Elizabeth) Nickel; stepdaughter Deborah Kawabata (Hidetaro); and many grandchildren and several greatgrandchildren. A service is planned at the Island Gospel Fellowship Hall for Saturday, August 18th at 1 PM. Interment to follow at the Burns Lake Cemetery. In lieu of owers, please consider donations to The Pines in Bill’s memory. The family would like to extend public thanks to The Pines for the wonderful care provided our loved one for the past year and half.
