Two Peninsula groups have joined forces to keep the Sidney Lions food bank stocked full of fresh fruit and vegetables this summer and fall. The Brentwood Divas, a group of women dedicated to sustainability and the environment, paired with the Farmlands Trust to start a program they dubbed Stop Fruit Drop. Sidney Lions food bank administrator Bev Elder said the service the two groups are providing to the food bank is invaluable. “Fresh produce, or fresh anything really, is something we don’t get enough of at the food bank,” she said. According to Elder the food bank serves 1,100 Peninsula-based clients a month, 39 per cent of whom are children under 16 and 12 per cent of whom are seniors 65 and older. “Fresh fruit and vegetable are obviously very nutritious and something a lot of our clients, being low income, can’t afford and therefore don’t get enough of. So they are benefitting hugely from this service,” she said. “I’d always admired the house when I’d drive by it, so when I saw it go on the market I knew we had to go at least look at it,” laughed Sheri Lynn, who’s worked and lived on the Peninsula with Mike and their children for the last 24 years. “As soon as I saw in the inside I was worried, but Mike kept going through room by room and envisioning what we could do with it and I became convinced.” The home, a familiar Resthaven Drive landmark, was built in 1912 by George Brethour for Richard Oldfield (no relation to the Oldfields of Central Saanich). According to information from the Sidney Museum Archives, Oldfield came to the Sidney area in 1912 and ran the Sidney office of the Western Development and Insurance Company. He only remained in the area until 1915 when he left for the March to Britain. When house was built, Resthaven Drive was known as Marine Drive. It is suspected the house, which is solidly built out of concrete block, was possibly built from pre-designed plans sold by Sears Roebuck. “It’s incredible. For being such an old house you’d think it would be drafty or creaky or maybe even have ghosts,” laughed Sheri Lynn. “I think we even asked the realtor if it had ghosts. But it turned out that it has a really comfortable feeling to it. I have slept better here than I’ve ever slept in any house before.” The Esos purchased the home from an older couple who had owned it for about 20 years. Before that, the home saw a handful of owners and, Mike suspects, a slew of renters. “Through the ’60s and ’70s I’m pretty sure it was a rental for many years. We always get people commenting or stopping by to say, ‘Oh, I went to a party at this house years ago,’ or ‘I used to know someone who lived there.’ It’s pretty funny.” To celebrate the house turning 100, the Esos hosted a garden party over the August long weekend. Their next plan as the house moves into being more than a century old is to continue to make improvements to it. “We always have something on the to do list for the house,” said Mike. “I work a lot on the landscaping outside, but now we’re at the point where we’re looking at stuff we did when we first moved in and thinking, well maybe it’s time to re-do that, so there’s always something to do.” reporter@peninsulanewsreview.com

Look waaaaaay up People watch the aerobatics at Victoria’s Largest Little Airshow at the Michell Airfield in Central Saanich. The two day event featured radio controlled planes and model airplanes on display, plus a barbecue, face painting and other family fun. Over the two days – Aug. 11 and 12 – the airshow raised $22,850 combined for CFAX Santas Anonymous and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. Organizer Mike Scholefield said he was very happy with the turnout and impressed by the amount of money raised for the two charities.

If you have normal vision, you should be able to see objects clearly whether they are near or far away. When your eye doctor examines your eyes he will measure your vision at long distance as well as close up. The measurement for distance vision is usually taken at 20 feet. A test for near vision is usually taken at the normal reading distance or about 16 inches. Near vision is used for reading, sewing, eating and any other activity in which the object you are looking at is within arms length. Intermediate vision includes computer screens, music on a stand, cards on a table etc. Distance vision is considered anything beyond that point. This would include looking at television or at people across the room, even though the distance is relatively short. You need to see clearly wherever you happen to be looking. Straining your eyes to try to see objects clearly can often cause headaches and other discomfort. If you think you may need glasses or contact lenses or a new lens correction, see your family optometrist for an examination.

chacker collapsed in the food court at approximately 5:20 a.m. First aid services were quickly notified and found Fleischacker unconscious and nonresponsive, but breathing. He was quickly transported to the medical centre on site and was later taken to Boundary Regional Hospital by B.C. Ambulance Service. Upon arrival to the hospital, attempts to stabilize Fleischacker failed and he suffered a fatal heart attack. “We would like to extend our gratitude to the medical staff and B.C. Ambulance for their quick response and efforts to save his life. We would also like to thank the RCMP for their high level of professionalism and sensitivity in helping us deal with this tragic incident. At this time our hearts and minds are with the family and friends of the deceased,” said one of the event organizers, Corrine Zawaduk, in a written statement. At press time, the Kootenay Boundary Regional RCMP detachment’s general investigation section was handling the case, which will be handed over to the B.C. Coroners Service to conduct an autopsy. “We’re leaving [the case] with the RCMP right now. They want to do a little more work on it before they hand it over to us,” said B.C. Coroners communication officer Barb McLintock. Shambhala Electronic Music Festival has been held at the Salmo River Ranch for the past 15 years. Pancakes help others get access to food Devon MacKenzie News staff

Sidney’s Flader Hale Hughesman chartered accounts are once again serving up pancakes for a good cause. This year’s breakfast will mark the company’s third pancake fundraiser and they have chosen to donate this year’s funds to the Sidney Lions food bank. “We’ve just been hearing time and time again how much they are in need,” said Elaine Hugesman, one of the event organizers. “When I went in and talked to [the staff] at the food bank, they said they’ve seen fewer donations and more use, so they are really in need right now.” The food bank currently feeds 1,100 people a month and is having trouble keeping up with such a high demand. The company hopes to raise enough money to boost the food bank’s stock so they can keep up with the need. “Organizations in the community like the food bank are what really make a difference and we want to help,” Hughesman said. Last year the company raised $6,000 through the pancake breakfast for Tristan Knapp-Fisher, a Parkland secondary student who has muscular dystrophy. Have a little bit of sympathy This past week, on the number 72 bus from Victoria to Sidney, a woman sat near the front with her stroller, in which her toddler screamed and yelled for a quarter hour or so. The mother ignored the tantrum as the bus trundled along East Saanich Road. Meanwhile, a few rows back, another woman’s eyes rolled in annoyance. “You never expect Rude comments to listen to that first in the morning,” don’t sit well with thing the woman said to those around you a neighbour on the bus. “Can you believe she’s just ignoring her kid screaming like that?” For the next 15 minutes, the woman complained about the noise, even stating the bus driver should kick the mother and crying child off the bus. Now, no one likes to hear screaming kids, but the woman’s behaviour and disrespect toward the mother was unnerving. To suggest a woman and her child should be ejected from a bus in rural Central Saanich in 30 degree weather is frankly rude and a bit unbelievable. As someone who doesn’t yet have children, this editor sympathizes with the mother on that bus. Teaching a child that tantrums earn attention isn’t the best parenting practice, and that practice needs to be exercised in public as much as in the home. To the woman who complained about the noise, it’s a small discomfort to endure. Even people without children understand that parenting is no easy task. We should go out of our way to make life a bit easier on people who are raising children in our community. Further, the Peninsula is known as a friendly place where people look out for each other. A bit of noise on a bus isn’t the end of the world. Take a breath and have some sympathy or empathy for others around you. It’s a small step that will help the Peninsula continue to be one of the best places in the world to live. What do you think? Another new regulation took effect this summer, creating a $525 fine for adults serving minors, on the job, at home or as a bootlegger. Parents who provide booze for their own under-age children are exempted. Previously, penalties applied only to licenced establishments. If the issue really is public safety and teen binge drinking, the key job for government is to regulate sales effectively. Once that is done, no justification remains for government liquor sales. Sidney North Saanich RCMP are warning Peninsula residents about a possible theft scam that involves two suspects. On Aug. 8, an elderly woman had just gotten into her car after grocery shopping at Safeway in Sidney when she was approached by a man asking for directions. The man produced a map and asked the woman to show him how to get to Nanaimo. He spread the map out on an adjacent vehicle which caused the woman to exit from her own vehicle and turn her back to her open driver’s side door. During this time it is believed another suspect entered the woman’s vehicle and stole her wallet from inside her purse. She did not see the second suspect. When the woman got back into her car she realized her bright orange wallet was missing. She chased the man, but he ran off and RCMP officers could not find him in the area. The suspect is described as Caucasian, 20 to 30 years old with a stocky build and approximately 5’10” inches tall. He was wearing a navy jacket and ball

cap with a red brim. He may speak with a foreign accent, however, it is not known whether this accent is real or fake. A similar incident was reported to Nanaimo RCMP on Aug. 6. Police would like to remind the public to ensure you keep watch of your valuables at all times when out in public. ■■■ Central Saanich police are warning seniors on the Peninsula to be extra vigilant after three situations occurred involving a man trying to scam money by telling elderly people faceto-face he was their long-lost nephew. The first incident occurred in Sidney Aug. 9 and involved a man who approached an older couple and began chatting with them. He walked with the couple for several blocks and although he did not ask the couple for cash, he gained a significant amount of information from them including where they lived. He then told the couple he would return to see them later. They later reported the incident to Sidney North Saanich RCMP. On Aug. 10, a report came from a seniors complex in the 7600 block of East Saanich Road that a man had entered a resi-

dent’s apartment claiming to be her long-lost nephew and asking for money. Fortunately the woman had no cash on her and the man left her apartment without incident. A few minutes later, a resident driving in the parking lot of the complex was approached by a man with the same story. She did not give the man cash either and reported the incident to the facility’s staff. “The suspect is very polite with them and there were no actual threats of violence,” said Cpl. Pat Bryant of Central Saanich police. “We’re just asking seniors to be extra cautious, to lock their doors and if they are approached by someone asking questions to not answer them.” The suspect is described as a Caucasian man, 5’6” tall with a medium build and short, receding dirty blond and grey hair. Witnesses say the man also has a distinguishable red complexion. There was also a similar case reported in Victoria last week. Peninsula based Royal LePage by the Sea recently sold their 200th oceanfront property since the company’s inception in 1996. The 200th property to sell, located on Tryon Road in North Saanich, went for a cool $2.65 million. Two other properties currently for sale on Tryon Road are listed at $1.58 million and $2.8 million. “In recent days we have seen a dramatic increase in activity associated with our high-end listings, [which gives] us much optimism as we move into the second half of [the year],” said Jean Dunn, owner and real estate agent of Royal LePage by the Sea, which specializes in high-end real estate but also carry an inventory of condos, townhouses and homes in the area. The Peninsula is home to some of the most expensive homes for sale in Greater Victoria. According to the Multiple Listing Service, there are currently 77 properties on the Saanich Peninsula for sale for more than $1 million. The most expensive property listed on the Peninsula is on West Saanich Road in North Saanich, overlooking Patricia Bay for $12.9 million. It wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen in time for the provincial election next spring, but the B.C. government is moving ahead with Premier Christy

Clarkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pledge to examine online voting at the local and provincial levels. Some municipalities have suggested modernizing elections to make voting more convenient to reverse the

recent trend to lower voter participation. Clark proposed the idea during last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s B.C. Liberal leadership campaign. Justice Minister Shirley Bond announced Thursday that she has

asked Chief Electoral Officer Keith Archer to set up an expert panel to make recommendations. Archer asked the government last year to give him authority to conduct pilot projects for electronic voting,

Horse carriages bound for Sidney? David Shishkoff of Friends of Animals and vegan advocate Sarah Kramer, far right, lead protesters in Victoria where horse drawn carriage stands are set up. The small group, which hopes to see the carriages banned in Victoria, was speaking out last week, after a horse was spooked and ran out of control. Black Beauty Line Ltd. made a request to Sidney council at Wednesday night’s meeting after the News Review’s deadline. It requested the town change its bylaw to allow its company, based in Central Saanich, to allow single-horse drawn carriages in the town on a trial basis, starting this fall. “This would permit tours to showcase many of the fine shops, artwork and other features of Sidney’s unique downtown,” Black Beauty Line wrote in its request. “The presence of such a unique service would certainly add to the overall ambiance and charm of the town.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has rejected suggestions his government is considering pushing through the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline across northern B.C. Hibiscus growing in the strangest place An interesting phenomenon is going on in the kitchen. On the counter, beside the sink, I have a hibiscus twig sitting in a small glass of water. It has produced a long root and now, to my amazement, it has a flower bud almost in bloom. I long to put

it in a pot of soil, but am afraid it will simply shrivel up and die if it gets taken out of that warm greenish water. However, I’m going to have to do something soon. My conscience bothers me every time I see it while getting a drink of water and I hate feeling guilty.

Cher came and picked me up yesterday, taking me to see her garden. The roses at the front of the house are spectacular and smell wonderful. The back garden is amazing, the tomatoes in her green house have stalks as thick as some trees and are,

of course, covered with fruit, as are the cucumber and zucchini vines. The outdoor veg garden is a wonderful blend of good things to eat, onions, giant pole beans (I’m still grieving the barren plants here). Some of those bean plants must be 15 feet high. She picks the

beans from the steps of a ladder. There is a big, handsome artichoke plant standing in a corner, lots of onions, green peas, carrots (which her dog used to pull up and eat) – everything you can think of, plus a forest of asparagus fern growing from the asparagus

I surely miss my old vegetable garden with its wonderful harvest all summer long and the blessed winter (THAT word again) squashes, which we loved. The ornamental orange tree sitting on the balcony is getting a sunburn. I don’t want to bring it inside yet, so may have to improvise some sort of screen for it. It, too, has come into bloom in spite of the heat. It was too hot for the sweet peas so they have signed off for the moment, although I still water them daily. The clematis has grudgingly produced
