When Lake Country horseshoe pitcher Andy Danyleyko lets loose with a horseshoe, more often than not the shoe ends up right on target. Danyleyko is considered an A level horseshoe player, meaning the Winfield Horseshoe Club member nails a ringer more than half the time. To be considered an A player, one must throw a ringer over 50 per cent of the time. Danyleyko’s average sits at 56 per cent. Never mind the game he tossed 80 per cent ringers. He’s just that good. “There are days when you feel better when you are playing and there are days when you are a little luckier,” said Danyleyko, whose latest accomplishment was a tournament win in Salmon Arm. More than winning, Danyleyko says it’s about having fun with friends and getting out and participating in a past-time. “I’ve always enjoyed it,” he said. “I think it’s good exercise. You go out there and forget about the rest of the world. It gives you a break from everything that is going on.” Danyleyko has been a member of the Winfield Horseshoe Club since he and his wife moved to Winfield in 1990. Prior to that they hadn’t belonged to a club and had taken part mostly in backyard contests. “I was glad they had a club here because I liked
the game,” he said. “It’s a really nice club.” Winfield Horseshoe Club founding member Doris Wilton says Danyleyko’s skills are clear to anyone who

watches him. “We’re still amazed that he is hanging in their and pitching so well,” said Wilton. “Usually people around his age give up.” The Winfield Horseshoe Club dates back to 1981 when Wilton and her husband moved to Winfield from Alberta and first approached Rutland about building a horseshoe club. When the approval never came, Wilton turned to Lake Country and the Winfield Horseshoe Club was born. It was built by the members and still sits on the same site, next to the curling club and Winfield Arena. But membership numbers have been dropping. “It’s still going good but our members have dropped quite a bit because they are getting older,” she said. Danyleyko says the

Best fishing for years in Wood Lake
A
fter a down season of fishing last year on Wood Lake things appear to be turning around for anglers who like to get out and go for some kokanee. According to fishing guide Mat Hanson at Love 2 Fish Charters, anglers have been pulling out some of the best sized kokanee in recent years this season with the average around two pounds and the odd one even reaching close to four or five pounds. “Last year the fishing was terrible on Wood Lake due to a die-off related to an algae bloom sucking all the oxygen out of the lake,” said Hanson, who added the cause of the algae bloom is still unknown, according to fisheries managers. This year however is going much better. “The fishing was slow in April and May but
Kevin Parnell No Boundaries really picked up in late June and July,” said Hanson. “I have been having anywhere from a dozen to two dozen bites a morning.” Hanson says despite last year’s die-off the size of the kokanee in the lake has been excellent. “Obviously the low survival rate over the last two years means lower numbers of kokanee in the lake which means more feed for the ones that survived and thus the increase in size,” said
Hanson, who ran his theory past fisheries biologists who agreed that could be the cause. Hanson also reports the kokanee are healthy and robust and put up a great fight, especially if you are using light gear to better feel the fish. Regardless of the theory, it’s good to hear a solid fishing report for what is one of the best kokanee fisheries anywhere in the province. ••• So welcome to my first ever column for the Lake Country Calendar. I’m not new to the area, having written for the Kelowna Capital News since 2003, and I have written plenty about Lake Country over the years in the Kelowna paper. I’ve also spent time on the aformentioned Wood Lake, both cruising around in friends’ boats and trolling in my
aluminum. I never thought much of kokanee fishing. That is until I hooked a couple on my fly rod. Like Hanson said, they are tremendous fighters and love to dive deep and go on great runs. I’ve also spent my fair share of time in the Winfield Arena as a member of the over-35 Winfield men’s rec hockey league. That means I’ve been pretty close to the Winfield Horseshoe Club, where Andy Danyleyko spends his time throwing ringers. You can read more about Andy on page A1. As your new reporter I’d like to welcome news tips, photos, feedback from what you read in the paper. I will need your help to properly cover the Lake Country scene. You can e-mail your tips to newsroom@lakecountrynews.net.

Some extra dollars to improve McKinley Landing Road RCMP warns merchants to be aware of counterfeit currency circulating KATHY MICHAELS
A few last minute tweaks to the plan to realign a portion of notoriously dangerous McKinley Landing Road will boost its anticipated cost by around two-thirds. Kelowna city council agreed last week to spend an extra $182,000 to smooth out a sharp corner of McKinley Landing Road. That amount will be tacked on to the original city contribution of $300,000 and $55,000 from ICBC, amounting to a project total of
$537,000. “We believe that this request to council will be enough to satisfy the requirements to complete the project in its entirely,” said Peter Truch, Kelowna’s transport and mobility manager. Among other things the extra dollars, which will come from Kelowna’s rural road reserve, will be used to create a more comprehensive environmental monitoring plan for drinking water quality in the Glenmore Ellison Improvement District’s McKinley Reservoir.
“With the environmental monitoring, one of the things that arose, that wasn’t envisioned, was that the rock we’re blasting away and filling the reservoir with has to be washed,” explained Truch. Also there was an additional concrete barrier that wasn’t envisioned in the preliminary planning stage, but during a safety audit a need for it became clear. Finally, things like the HST and a rising cost for construction also put upward pressure on the total.
Improvements to McKinley Road were requested after Kamloops’ woman died as a result of driving her car into the McKinley Reservoir last December. There have been three accidents on the road since 2008, including one last December where a young woman drowned after her car left the road and ended up in the water. Initially the call for change it elicited wasn’t well received by city staff. They noted that there hadn’t been any incidents where vehicles left the
road and ended up in the water between 1996 and 2008. With some political pressure, however, staff started to look at ways to improve the road. The $537,000 plan includes blasting rock to fill up a portion of the reservoir. It will support a less windy realignment of the road and some concrete barriers barriers. The tendering process will get underway this month, and Truch said he expects construction will take place in the fall, when the water level is lowest.

Shane Philip brings his music to Lake Country orchard An ancient tribal instrument from northern Australia, the didgeridoo is considered the oldest wind instrument that exists today. This Friday, Aug. 17, Shane Philip brings this and many more instruments to Gatzke Orchards in Lake Country. The hypnotic, haunting sound the didgeridoo produces can induce lis-
teners into a trance-like state and is even thought to have a special healing power. Philip harnesses this power to produce an irresistible fusion of reggae and funk-influenced rhythm and song in his live concerts. While the front of the Gatzke farm displays the bounty from its orchard, the area be-
hind the market provides an opportunity for guests to experience a musical performance in the agricultural setting of Oyama, the “jewel of the Okanagan.” Self-described as a singer/songwriter “first and foremost,” Philip uses an arsenal of didgeridoos, guitars and drums to bring his songs to life and the effect is so cut-
ting edge that some mistake it for electronic looping. “I just play what comes from my heart and soul,” Philip said. “That’s the ultimate compliment for me,” he said. “I know people who like electronic music and hear a little bit of that when I get the kick drum and high hat going, and the ‘didge,’ but that’s as close as I get.”
“I’m doing it live off the floor so it’s completely 100 per cent organic,” he said. The Gatzke Orchards are on Hwy 97 N in Oyama. For more about the farm visit www.gatzkefarmmarkets.com This all-ages welcome concert starts at 5 p.m. on Aug. 17. Ticket are $10, $15 at the door on the night.
The RCMP is advising businesses throughout the Interior of the B.C. that several areas have recently experienced a spike in counterfeit money passing. Since the last week of July, RCMP have received numerous complaints where counterfeit currency was either passed or attempted to be passed in the communities of Oliver, Osoyoos, Okanagan Falls, Penticton, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Salmon Arm and Kamloops. These incidents involve Canadian bank notes in the $20, $50 and $100 denominations from the Canadian Journey Series, dated between 2001 and 2006. The public, merchants and businesses should always check the security features of bank notes before accepting them.
The security features to check are: • the watermark or ghost image • the security thread • the overall print quality • the metallic or holographic strip and • the puzzle number or see-through number. “The typical modus operandi is for the passer to make an inexpensive purchase and pay with a large denomination, in turn receiving a large percentage of change back in authentic currency, leaving the bogus bill in the till. Feel, look and flip the bank note to check the security features.” said Corp. Dan Moskaluk. For more information on counterfeiting prevention go to the Bank of Canada website at http://www.bankofcanada.ca/banknotes/ counterfeit-prevention/.

In this deluge of instant wireless communication with everyone everywhere, I find it hard to remember that even land lines are a relatively recent innovation. My parents never had a phone of any kind until 1947. In the 1970s, I visited Prairie homes that still connected to their neighbours using the ubiquitous barbed wire fences. B.C. liquor laws are finally more effective H ere’s a summer scene being played out all over North America. Family van pulls up to the corner store to stock up on a few camping essentials—pop, chips, hot dogs, a case of beer and a bottle of vodka. Not in B.C. you say? It happens every day at rural agency liquor stores around the province. As with many other issues, there is one reality for urban B.C. and another for the rest of us. Selling booze in grocery stores would presumably create anarchy in B.C cities and towns, but villagers and their visitors somehow manage it, just as everyone does across the line in Washington or Alaska. These rural agency stores are “flyspeck operators,” sniffs an acquaintance who spent his career as a union activist in government liquor stores. Picture dusty old bottles on a rickety shelf, greedy owners and poor-

Tom Fletcher ly trained clerks more likely to sell to under-age drinkers. Similar generalizations can be heard about the hundreds of private liquor stores that have popped up around B.C. since they were legalized. And in fact there have been more violations in private stores, revealed in sting operations run by liquor inspectors. In the year ended March 31, 54 private stores were caught selling to a minor, for an 84 per cent compliance rate. Only four government stores were caught, a pass rate
of 96 per cent. Five rural agency stores were tested, and one flunked. But here is the telling statistic. In 2010, the government allowed liquor inspectors to employ actual minors to test stores. Previously, they hired people who looked young but were old enough to buy alcohol. As late as 2009, two out of three stores (government or otherwise) sold to them. Problem is, that’s not an actual offence. Now liquor inspectors send in undercover teens, and relieve them of the evidence when they are allowed to buy booze. The watchdog now has teeth, and compliance has jumped. The government glossed over the poorer performance of private stores. But in fairness, three times as many private stores as government ones were targeted in the new inspections, and the gap is narrow. Government stores
also have a huge builtin financial advantage in their wholesale rate, and are generally overstaffed by private sector standards. The B.C. Liberals also moved this spring to make rural agency stores easier to establish. Regulation changes brought the minimum population served from 300 down to 200, and eliminated a vague requirement for a “bona fide community” to exist around the store. Meanwhile, the big booze story this year is cabinet minister Rich Coleman’s plan to sell B.C.’s warehouse and distribution monopoly to a private contractor. The B.C. Government Employees’ Union has protested, despite assurances that their jobs will continue. B.C.’s burgeoning craft beer industry has looked to Alberta’s allprivate model and predicts higher costs. The B.C. Liberal government has been on the
defensive from the start, with the NDP pointing to the paper trail of lobbyists with an apparent inside track. It’s great politics, but it matters little to consumers in an increasingly competitive but heavily taxed business. Another new regulation took effect this summer, creating a $525 fine for adults serving minors, on the job, at home or as a bootlegger. Parents who provide booze for their own under-age children are exempted. Previously, penalties applied only to licensed establishments. If the issue really is public safety and teen binge drinking, the key job for government is to regulate sales effectively. Once that is done, no justification remains for government liquor sales. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Morse code could also be sent by flashing lanterns. Or beating drums. Or flapping flags. We used flags for semaphore, a system of visual spelling. Think carefully before you let anyone borrow your car Compassionate care
M
y father moved last month to live down the street from me. We hadn’t lived in the same city since I left Regina to go to the University of Victoria for law school in 1991. Having been born in 1935, he was 56 in 1991. He is now 77. When he retired, he and his wife moved to live in Brazil, where my father had served as a Catholic monk as a much younger man. We got to see him and his wife for a week or two each year during their annual trips back to Canada. They would rent a car and drive extensively during their annual pilgrimage, visiting family. The last several years, they borrowed my car. Not having a car gave me more of an excuse to license my motorcycle. Yes, I own a motorcycle. And, no, it wasn’t the product of a mid-life crisis.
Paul Hergott Achieving Justice There was a curious coincidence of my wife surprising me with a Harley along with a dramatic increase in my life insurance. Since moving here, we have been sharing my car while my father and his wife get settled in before getting around to car shopping. Between my father and his wife, my father has always been the driver. Of course. That’s the way of the world. The man drives. My father collapsed as he was walking home from my house last week. He has no recollection of
going down. He found himself laying on the sidewalk, his glasses in pieces. He picked himself up and made it the last bit to his house. I doubt I would have learned of the event if he hadn’t ended up with a big goose-egg on his right cheekbone. He must have landed on his face. There was that and our wonderful neighbours, who called us immediately after witnessing the aftermath. When asking him about it, my father filled me in that he has been having dizzy spells from time to time, sometimes to the point of falling. He somewhat reluctantly agreed to go to a doctor the next day and now has an appointment booked with a cardiologist. My father’s wife had been away—she was in Saskatchewan for a memorial. She flew back into town yesterday. My wife and I, and the kids, are away camp-

HOW DID HE AND I BOTH MISS THE BOAT THAT HE SHOULDN’T BE DRIVING AT ALL UNTIL THE CAUSE OF HIS DIZZY SPELLS HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED AND EFFECTIVELY TREATED?
What the hell was I thinking? His last dizzy spell, coming on as he was walking down the sidewalk, hurt only his face and his glasses. What if he had been driving my car? Yes, the dizzy spells were few and far between, and the odds that a dizzy spell would occur while he was driving were very small, but even a small probability is too high a probability, right? I am reminded of retired farmer Mr. Poole. At age 88, he had continued to drive after being prohibited from doing so because of his extremely poor vision. He was caring for his
disabled wife; without his help, she would be in a care facility. He minimized risk by driving extremely carefully, never exceeding 30 kilometres per hour. His level of care and low speed didn’t save the flag-person he killed. Thankfully, my father made it to the airport safely. I am also thankful that my father is less of a moron than I am. He emailed to say that he insisted that his wife drive home from the airport. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, though. We are both morons. My father recognized that his wife should be driving. How did he and I both miss the boat that he shouldn’t be driving at all until the cause of his dizzy spells has been diagnosed and effectively treated? Had a dizzy spell caused a crash, I would have been as responsible as him, certainly legally and, I strongly suggest, morally as well. He does know the commands of “Sit” and “Lay Down”, but his new owners will have to continue with his training. He has been exposed to older children but not smaller sized ones. We would advise you to use caution if he is around older children, just because of his excitability and size. We feel that Copper has the potential to be a loving and loyal pet for the right family. His companionship would definitely be worth it. If you are interested in Copper, please ask the Dog Kennel Staff to meet him in our backyard and in our Quiet Room.

Dealing with psychotic incidents is more common than we may think
W
hen we see news stories involving very bizarre or inexplicable behaviour, it is common to pause and think, ‘that person is psychotic. I hear this comment frequently from people when talking about strange or unsettling behaviour. The statement may indeed be correct, but there are a lot of misconceptions out there about what constitutes psychosis and what it means for someone to be psychotic. Psychosis is actually a symptom rather than an illness in itself. Psychotic
Paul Latimer
Healing Minds episodes are experienced in several psychiatric disorders as well as some general medical conditions and as a result of substance use. So what does psychosis entail? It is derived
from the Greek words “psyche for mind and “osis for abnormal condition—and that is truly what it is—an abnormal condition of the mind. It is used in connection with a disconnection with reality as with hallucinations and delusions. When people are hearing or seeing things that others around them cannot hear or see, we say they are hallucinating and are psychotic. Hallucinations involve perceiving things that are not there or are unreal. Hearing voices is one of the more commonly portrayed types of hal-

lucinations, especially in schizophrenia. There are also olfactory hallucinations when a person smells something that is not there or tactile hallucinations when someone, feels something that is not there such as insects or parasites crawling in their skin. These may involve the belief that another person or organization is conspiring against one.

in a person’s life or as a recurring symptom. Since psychosis is by definition an abnormal brain state involving a disconnection with reality, they can be dangerous. People sometimes act on their false beliefs and/ or perceptions to the detriment of themselves and those around them. Treatment for psychosis depends to some degree on what is causing the symptom. Often, hospital admission is necessary in the midst of a psychotic episode for the safety of the patient and others. There are a number
of antipsychotic medications such as quetiapine, risperidone, olanzapine, and aripiprazole to name a few. These will provide symptomatic relief in most situations. Psychosis is a serious symptom and a physician should always be consulted as quickly as possible if the cause and appropriate treatment are unknown.

As mentioned above psychosis can occur as a symptom in schizophrenia. It can also occur in bipolar disorder, severe depression, post partum depression, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and some other medical conditions. Some prescription medications can also cause psychotic side effects and psychotic symptoms can also occur from the use of street drugs. Psychosis is more common than you might think, affecting more than one in every 100 people. A psychotic episode can occur only once

It is quiet and humid, the 33 C heat mitigated somewhat by the dense forest. Then, Nathan, my very helpful and reassuring guide, calls out: “5,4,3,2,1! And, my stomach speeds up into my throat and plummets back down, past my lungs, across my ribs, through my hips, along my legs and into the tips of my toes. The giant swing crashes down and for-
ward at an insane speed, the momentum not unlike that experienced on the most-ferocious of carnival rides. The first two passes on the swing induce delirium on my senses, the very type of pleasure and pain that has me thrilled and frightened simultaneously, The freefalling object I am riding is the Sky Swing, one of the many remarkable experiences at SkyTrek Adventure Park near Revelstoke. The adventure park is among a string of fantastic attractions for those who crave a few days away from home, but wish to stay close to home. Just east of the adven-
ture park sits the impressive Three Valley Gap Lake Chateau, with its adjacent ghost town and railway museum. Just west of the adventure park is Beardale Castle and its miniature world. And, back, at the adventure park, nestled among the trees below the ropes and swings and A zip lines, stands the Enchanted Forest, a scaleddown world of its own especially geared toward younger kids. But, first, I must sur- w vive the Sky Swing and an assortment of other adventures in this adrenaline-packed park. SEE TRAVEL A11

news ▼ DEALING WITH PAIN
Study shows the pain relief benefits of taking vitamin D T ‘‘ IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE PAIN EXPERIENCED DURING DYSMENORRHEA IS TRIGGERED BY EXCESSIVE PRODUCTION OF PROSTAGLANDINS MADE FROM OMEGA 6 FATTY ACIDS.
Markus Thiel
Ask Dr. Thiel His findings were most interesting. He found that the vitamin D group reported a 41per dent reduction in their pain while the placebo group reported no
reduction in pain whatsoever. Interestingly enough, the vitamin D group did
not report taking any pain medication during their menstrual cycle. The placebo group reported taking their nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories at least once. It is important to point out that this large dose of vitamin D was given once and not to be taken daily. Too much of a good thing can be bad for you. The literature reports the daily use of this sort of dosage can produce a state called hypercalcemia, among other things. It is my opinion that
vitamin D is being underutilized especially by those of us in northern climates where exposure to sun is reduced. It is estimated that 75 per cent of North Americans are vitamin D deficient. In fact, vitamin D deficiencies will lead to a significant increase in frequency of colds and flus, cardiovascular disease in conjunction with inflammatory diseases and cancer. Is it any wonder that the highest incidence of colds and flus are where we have the least amount of sunlight? There is a significant
body of research that proves that vitamin D supplementation to optimum levels profoundly decreased the incidence of cancer and cardiovascular disease in addition to osteoporosis. Deficiencies in this most important vitamin will also lead to increases in blood pressure, muscle weakness and pain, depression and lethargy. When one studies the human genome, 10 per cent of the entire genome relies on vitamin D for its proper manufacturing. There is no other

he Archives of Internal Medicine produced a research paper in February that may be helpful in assisting women who suffer from dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation. Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common gynaecologic complaints in young women. It is estimated that it affects approximately 40 to 70 per cent of women of reproductive age. Ten per cent of women describe their pain as disabling and severe. Dr. Antonio Lasko, of the department of Internal Medicine at the University of Messina, Italy, found that single high doses of vitamin D greatly reduce the amount of menstrual pain experienced and reduce the need for pain medication for up to two months. It is believed that the pain experienced during dysmenorrhea is triggered by excessive production of prostaglandins made from omega 6 fatty acids. Unfortunately, omega 6 fatty acids are abundant in our North American diet. It is believed that vitamin D acts as a potent anti-inflammatory and may reduce the production of arachadonic acid which will then produce excess prostaglandins causing inflammation, and therefore pain. Essentially, vitamin D will stop the formation of excessive prostaglandins. The sample study included 40 women between the ages of 18 and 40 years of age who had experienced painful menstruation four times in the previous six months and had a low serum level of vitamin D. They were allowed to use nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs but they had to record how much and whether or not they used them during menstruation. The study group was broken into two groups, one receiving 300,000 IUs of vitamin D and the other half receiving a placebo. The vitamin D was given five days prior to the time that they expected menstruation to commence.

Politics of who, not what, often at play in OttawaN
O
ne of the questions I am often asked during my summer listening tour, and in particular when meeting with local government representatives, is about the differences between serving on Penticton council compared to being a Member of Parliament. Although there are many differences, one area that stands out is in the terms of disagreement. On city council it was common that individual council members would disagree on some issues, but we could often find agreement on others. By contrast, in Ottawa disagreement for the sake of being disagreeable is almost the status quo. As an example, I have noticed that on almost every occasion when the government has changed a policy from that of the former Liberal government, the howls of outrage and condemnation from Liberal MPs and supporters suggests that there was only one possible way of doing things–the Liberal way. I don’t mean to sound political but on city council, we would often at least consider different policies and ideas and were far less concerned over who authored whatever policy we were contemplating changing.
‘‘
IN OTTAWA DISAGREEMENT FOR THE SAKE OF BEING DISAGREEABLE IS ALMOST THE STATUS QUO.
Dan Albas Our goal was to always find a better or more efficient way to get things done, not unlike the objective for the federal government in Ottawa. I will provide an example of this to further illustrate. During last year’s 2011 federal budget bill introduced by the government, we honored an election commitment to eliminate direct taxpayer subsidies for political parties. At the time, the outrage from Liberals that the government would dare to change a policy created by a Liberal government headed by Jean Chretien were heard across the nation. The claims from critics even went so far as to suggest that without direct taxpayer handouts for political parties, our very Canadian democratic system was under attack. Over-the-top claims and selective misinformation are becoming a
common occurrence. Now, one year later, I believe it is important to revisit this policy created by the government to observe firsthand what has really occurred. Are major political parties floundering for survival without your tax dollars as many critics suggested they would be? The removal of the taxpayers subsidies is being done over a four year

time frame and this is the first year where parties will receive less of your money that was based on a per vote subsidy. Last week, the second quarter political party fundraising returns were released publicly and the results are indeed very surprising. For the Liberals, the party who, when in government, created the policy arguing that political parties could not survive without your tax dollars— and in spite of currently being the number three party in Canada—has actually raised more money than the NDP in the second quarter with more than $1.8 million raised in just the past three months alone. For the NDP, who raised more than $1.7million in the second quarter, the total now stands at $3.74 million year-to-date. That is the amount of money the NDP would normally raise in an entire non-election year when the per vote subsidies were in place. The Green Party also had an increase in donations in the second quarter of the year over the first and the only federal party to show a decline was the Bloc Quebecois. The Conservative second quarter donations reached $3.7 mil-

lion from close to 29,000 T donors. The Liberals currento ly posted over 22,000 donors and the NDP is e close to 18,500 donors. t Clearly, when taxpayera subsidies are taken away t and political parties are s required to raise funds w from their own support- a ers they are proving re- w markably capable of do- s t ing so. In other words, hand- c ing over your hard earned tax dollars to pol- t itical parties was com- ( pletely unnecessary, and K more so when it should a be noted that there are t already generous tax C breaks for those who make political donations. w Once the taxpayer subsidies for political parties are completely phased out taxpayer’s will be saving over $ 27 million each and every year. These savings are significant. For example the government’s newly announced loan forgiveness program that helps encourage doctors and other medical professionals to practice in under-serviced rural communities has a budget of $9 million. In spite of critic’s false claims to the contrary, ending handouts to political parties is the right thing to do so your tax dollars can be better spent helping Canadians instead of playing partisan politics.

your beach front, please consider the impact to the inherent aquatic habitat along the foreshore. Before any alterations are made a Natural Environment Development Permit must be obtained from the District of Lake Country in consultation with the provincial Riparian Areas Regulations, and the federal Fisheries Act. The bottom line is that the fine sand affects spawning habitat – spawning fish need the gravel substrate. Come in to municipal hall and have a staff member help you balance the tourism and environmental interests on your property.
Short term vacation rentals: Lake Country is a prime destination for visitors, and short term vacation rentals must comply with zoning bylaws. Residential rentals must be no less than one month in duration. Bylaw Enforcement will be responding to complaints with tickets issued to violators. If you would like to register a complaint please call 250-766-6673 or visit www.lakecountry.bc.ca and click on “How do I?” in the blue left margin and follow the link to “Make a Service Request/File a complaint.” Please note: All complainants must supply their name and contact information although the name and contact information of complainants is kept confidential and only used for internal purposes as per the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Boaters – Use the water safely: Boaters are asked to be cautious and be mindful of the effect of wake from personal water craft and boats. Conservation Officers will be actively enforcing the 10 km/hr speed restriction within 30 meters of shore on interior lakes.
Smart Meters: BC Hydro is in the midst of updating and upgrading the province’s electricity system to ensure that it can meet the needs of customers all over the province. Smart meter exchanges in Lake Country began in June 2012 and are scheduled to be completed by November 2012.
