Let the races begin Fall harness racing season at Fraser Downs kicked off with family-friendly open house By Kristine Salzmann For Doug McCallum, countless children awestruck by the horses at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino last Saturday (Aug. 11) were a welcome sight. The CEO of Harness Racing BC was hoping to attract more families to the track’s second annual open house which signaled the start of the standardbred harness racing season. The long lineups for everything from barn tours to jogging cart rides around the track proved that goal was achieved. “We have said we need to promote Fraser Downs a lot more to families and that’s why we started the open house last year. And this year it was even more popular with the kids,” McCallum said. “Their eyes just light up when they see the horses.” The event also featured demonstrations, such as how to care for horses, and a craft area for kids where they painted horseshoes. McCallum encourages families to come out for opening day this Saturday. The fall harness racing season officially kicks off this weekend, with races Aug. 18 and 19 starting at 12:45 p.m. Fraser Downs is back to a 10 month season (82 days of racing) after seeing a controversial shortened season last year, one that may have threatened thousands of jobs in the Fraser Valley and beyond had the change stuck. “They only wanted to give us six months on, six months off. The six that we’re off,

Heritage rail cars in new home Plans for passengers to climb aboard restored electric car by next spring By Kristine Salzmann Heritage rail enthusiasts and lucky bystanders at Clover Square Village caught a historic sight yesterday as they looked skyward. On Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 15), after The Cloverdale Reporter’s deadline, two interurban electric rail cars were hoisted by crane
into their new home, a car barn recently built by the Fraser Valley Heritage Rail Society on 176 St. south of Hwy. 10. The 70,000 lb. cars were relocated from Sullivan Station, and the move marks the start of a new phase in the society’s project that hopes to see people in the community and beyond enjoy a work-
ing rail car next spring. The society plans to complete a replica station in Cloverdale by May 2013 in time for the Cloverdale Rodeo so passengers can climb aboard one of the two cars for a leisurely seven mile ride to the replica Sullivan Station. BC Electric Railway Car 1225 was built in St. Louis in 1913 and

track owner Southern Railway of B.C. and the City of Surrey. “That makes us very unique.” Over time the tour will be extended westward through Surrey. The second car, BC Electric Railway Car 1304, was built in New Westminster in 1911 and is also known as the Royal Car because it carried the Duke of Connaught and his family on a tour of the Fraser Valley the following year. It is still being restored. Aubert said the idea for the entire project began with the Surrey Heritage Advisory Committee back in 1996 and that it took four years of research to track down the two cars in U.S. museums. The society is currently raising $1.5 million for the replica Cloverdale Station (which will be based on the original design and built as close as possible to its original location), a replica baggage car, and the rehabilitation of Car 1304. A $50 contribution will get donors a complimentary ticket for next spring. Excitement for the project is growing, said Aubert, as evidenced by the 151 tickets already handed out. They are also looking for volunteers to take on a range of jobs, including conductors, operators, ticket-takers and station masters. Training starts this fall (contact Myrna at 604-597-9704). In fact, there will be plenty of opportunities for people to get involved, such as participating in the construction of the replica station in the later stages.

Time, tech right for electronic voting If you ask me, a futurist is often little more than a fortune teller with a library card. Their opinions aren’t necessarily any more valid than anyone else’s, but the media tends to gravitate toward them because of the value we place on experience and education. But often, their words are little more than wind. So it was this morning, on my drive into work, when my jaw hit the floor as I was listening to the Bill Good Show on CKNW, where an “expert” was saying that introducing online voting won’t improve the voter turnout. Really? Hmmm. After analyzing his argument for about 0.5 seconds, I came up with very familiar examples of why he couldn’t be more wrong. My rebuttal argument would centre around two points: people are inherently lazy and timing is everything for technology. Firstly, people are really, really lazy (that includes me). Make it more convenient for them to do even the simplest of tasks,
and that’s a winning idea. Case in point: car technology. Yes, inserting your key into the ignition and turning is easy enough for starting a car, but that didn’t stop the introduction of the now commonplace push-
Martin van den Hemel
button style, keyless car starter. And yes, closing your trunk takes little more than a flick of the wrist, but now people are buying the push-the-buttonand-the-trunk-lid-will-closeall-by-itself option. So it stands to reason that if you can build a secure electronic system, where voters are veri-
The Cloverdale
fied for their identities, and it’s easier than driving to the local school, parking, walking up to the voting room, getting in line to check your identification, going to the voting booth, and making your selection... then it stands a chance of being a winner. Now this expert argued there are examples were electronic voting has been introduced elsewhere in the world, and hasn’t shown to increase voting. And that’s where timing is everything for technology. And the timing has never been more right for online voting. Long before the iPad became the computer tablet of choice for 60 million people—registering more than $40 billion in sales for tech-giant Apple in the last couple of years—another computer company introduced something very similar. Yes, Microsoft introduced the Tablet PC in 2000. You aren’t alone if you didn’t know that; that iteration failed miserably. I’d say that with the current proliferation of smart phones, from iPhones to Blackberries to Android devices, and on-the-
horizon technology that will replace all your bulky credit cards, and a smart phone application for nearly every task conceivable, the necessary infrastructure for electronic voting already exists. Those tasked with creating the online voting option need to capitalize on this existing technological infrastructure. Imagine our children, watching us as we vote simply by powering up our iPhone, opening the Voting app, using our FaceTime to verify our identities with our registered B.C. Driver’s Licence photo, and then making a few selections. Making it simple and part of our routine will change the way the next generation views voting. Today, it’s more a chore than a right. Making voting mandatory would be a natural next step. If everyone must vote, and nearly everyone has a smart phone... well, do I really need to connect the dots? Surrey native mentors group in Akute, Nigeria phanage have also been exchanging letters with pen pals in Canada. The batch sent from Canada was written in the Cloverdale Amphitheatre on Canada Day. “Working at an orphanage, you see life from a very different perspective,” said Harish Raisinghani, one of the members who has volunteered his August for the build in Akute. Now, he says, it’s hard to imagine returning to Surrey. A “reverse culture shock,” he predicted. “We’ve spent a week here... a lot of our luxuries don’t really exist here,” he said. “I think it puts a lot of our personal issues in perspective.” The team said it was a huge shock when they arrived in Lagos. For one, the traffic is immense, and it can take them anywhere from 90 minutes to three hours to get from their lodging on Victoria Island to the orphanage. They also described their arrival as “chaotic.” They were escorted through Lagos to Victoria Island by police armed with AK-47s. One car in front, another behind. Armed robberies are common over there, after all. Clive D’Souza, another team member, said their daily commute has been their unofficial tour of the area, and of the country. Traffic is lined by market places, taxis, folks bartering on the streets, and children running around. “This whole culture is extremely addictive,” he says. “Every day, we’re learning new things, we’re coming across

By Kolby Solinsky Monty Raisinghani has lived in Nigeria for two years and, needless to say, it’s a little different from Canada. “There’s a lot of poverty out here, and education in African countries is very limited,” the Surrey native and UBC grad says, adding that he lived a “pampered lifestyle” in British Columbia. “To be in Canada and to be in that situation... they don’t realize that many people (in Nigeria) live off one Starbucks coffee salary in two, three days.” Raisinghani is a leader and mentor with the ELITE4Africa program and, on Friday, Aug. 4, he had four team members – none of whom had ever been to Africa – join him in Akute, Nigeria, a small town near Lagos. Together, they’ll build an educational facility at an orphanage as part of a global mentorship program. It’s all for the children of the orphanage, and Monty says he wants them to know what it feels like to be helped, and to have hope. It’s hard work, and he hopes the long-term effects of this project extend beyond this summer alone. “How do you help these people, how do you go out there and change something that’s been the norm out here?” he says of the preparation that went into the project. “We want to provide a place within the orphanage that makes them feel like they’re outside the orphanage.” The 63 children who are living at the or-

first day, we all didn’t really know what to expect, and we’re passing through the gates of the orphanage, and they put on a little reception for us... they’re surrounding our car dancing, taking pictures. “All they wanted to do was be given some attention and be loved and hugged.” Harpreet said that it was “heartbreaking” to know these kids had been abandoned by their parents, but he knows they’re grateful for the work being done by the Elite4Africa team. “You can just see it in their eyes,” she says. “I remember sitting at the swings, one girl came up to me and just held my hand. The kids would be coming and giving us hugs. You can feel it.” Culturally, the Surrey team has gone through quite an experience. They’ve been introduced to Nigerian dances and music, and they’ve been in awe of the country, the continent, and the African lifestyle.
However, there’s work to be done. “In terms of the build, I think we’re on a very strict timeline,” said Monty. “There’s been a lot of preparation and we need to hit our target dates and deadlines, so we can have a good

where he earned a degree in Petroleum Geophysics. Quickly after graduating, Daulat decided that labouring in Alberta oil fields was not the career he envisioned. “In 1968, I started an apprenticeship program for film,” he says. “My first placement was at the New West Drive-In and, in 1969, I started working there.” Since then, film has been a constant focal point of Daulat’s life – a central cog in his daily routine. That is, until recently, when he made the difficult decision to switch from film prints to digital. “It has been a slow, gradual conversion to digital,” says Daulat, who refuses to learn anything about the new technology. “There is no personal touch. I need something tangible, something to feel. Film keeps me busy.” Since the switch, Daulat has passed the torch on to his sons, who are now responsible for ensuring the films run smoothly. The projection room now sits untouched, a sad thought Daulat says. With the new digital technology, hands on work is not required and the system operates by remote control. With new movies featured every Friday, the Drive-In proves to be the perfect combination of old traditions mixed with the latest entertainment to intrigued an audience of all ages. Upcoming movies include Disney and Pixar’s Brave, The Expendables 2 and Ice Age 4. More than just a business venture, the Twilight Drive-In has become a home to Daulat and he says he is “happy the way [everything] is going.” However, his ambition may not be limited to his current plot of land. “If I ever found another piece of land, I would build another [Drive-In],” he says.

Outdoor Drive-In mixes nostalgic experience with new technology By Kelly Rumley Long days, late nights and little sleep have become a daily occurrence for Jay Daulat, the owner of the Twilight Drive-In in Aldergrove. He and his family opened the Twilight Drive-In in September, 2005, two years after the Hillcrest DriveIn in Surrey was closed in 2003. Operating one of the two Drive-In theatres left in B.C., Daulat is a “firm believer in the business,” and has no regrets or reservations about his line of work. “There used to be lots of Drive-Ins in the Lower Mainland but unfortunately most were forced to close, not because of attendance but because the land became too valuable to the owners,” says Daulat with a sigh. Finding land and long term leases is not an easy task, says Daulat, but with a little effort, anything is possible. Having built the Twilight Drive-In from scratch, running the theatre has become more than a family affair. With the help of his wife, Camla, and two sons, Vesham (28) and Vijay (24), the Drive-In season begins mid-February and the theatre stays open until midNovember. Athough, with dreary Vancouver weather, it’s not uncommon for that timeline to shift. May-to-September continues to be their busiest period, “primarily because that is when the summer blockbusters are released,” says Daulat. With a passion as evident as Daulat’s, it may surprise many that the film industry was not his first dream, though he says the work was a hobby he developed as a young child. Leaving Trindad in 1956 to study in Canada, Daulat attended the University of Manitoba and then went on to UBC

How do I support my child’s transition back to school in September? Even with 3 weeks until the first day of school, now is the time for parents to start thinking about supporting their child’s transition back to school. To keep to simple, let’s use the 3 R’s: 1. Routines: Summertime is a break from structure, with plenty of free time for children. Slowly beginning to get back to routines, especially those related to morning readiness and bedtime, will support a child and parent being prepared. 2. Reconnecting: Reconnecting your child with school friends is an excellent way to renew relationships. For many children these friendships assist feeling comfortable about returning to school. 3. Reducing Anxiety: A new school year brings change and some level of anxiety. Communicating with your child about the year head is a first step to better understand and reduce anxiety. Strategies that may also support your child feeling secure would be to visit the school prior to the first day, arrange to check out their classroom or meet their new teacher. Plan for and have a great first day of school!

Q A
Why should I advertise in a newspaper? According to research by the Readership Institute at Northwestern University, advertising is one of the top five drivers of newspaper readership. That’s because consumers seek out the newspaper to make product buying decisions. Consider these findings from a recent shopping study by MORI Research: • 52 percent of consumers say newspapers are where they go to check out advertisements—five more than any other medium. • 46 percent say newspapers are their “preferred’ medium to receive ad information; TV comes in fourth at 10 percent. • 52 percent see newspaper ads as “valuable” in planning shopping; the Internet and direct mail are second at 13 percent each. • When asked where they would like to see advertising eliminated, only 10 percent said newspapers, compared to 34 percent for TV and 38 percent for the Internet.

Q A
Should I spend the money to have a home inspection? Absolutely. Many home purchasers, either in the desire to save the $250 to $600 that a good inspection costs, or due to simple ignorance, have spent enormous sums of money repairing items that any good home inspector would have pointed out. Any offer to purchase you make should be contingent upon (subject to) a whole house inspection with a satisfactory report. Do not let anyone — not your family or friends, and especially not the seller — dissuade you from having the property thoroughly inspected! Not only will you sleep much sounder after you have moved into the house, a professional inspection can give you an escape hatch from a contract on a defective house. If the contract is written contingent on an acceptable inspection, any defects in the home must be either repaired or monetarily compensated for. If you are not satisfied, you have the option to cancel the contract. give us a
