VOTES FOR WOMEN! — The Creston Museum hosted its annual Old-Fashioned Tea on Saturday, which featured an appearance by suffragette Dorothy Davis,
played by Gail Kitt (centre), on the centennial of her 1912 visit to the Creston Valley. Other members of Footlighters Theatre Society joined Kitt and the audience in a discussion of women’s suffrage, and members of Key of She sang songs appropriate to the topic. Nearly a week after a lightning strike started a wildfire on Mount Thompson, crews continue to battle a blaze that had grown to 56 hectares (138 acres) on Monday. The fire started during the Aug. 8 electrical storm and crews were on the scene by Wednesday. As many as six helicopters have supported a crew of 36, many of which are rappel specialists, trained to fight fires in steep, rocky terrain. The fire, located on the mountainside above the Bountiful community, is not considered a threat to any structures or infrastructures. Smoke has been visible throughout the Creston Valley and flames could be seen for miles around at night. “Today, crews will work to keep the fire from progressing to the south and west through the building of a fire guard,” BC Forest Service fire information officer Tim Neal said on Monday. “To strengthen the fire guard, they will be burning off un-burnt fuel within the fire perimeter. This may cause more smoke to be visible in the surrounding area.” B.C. is also experiencing a haze of smoke from forest fires in Russia. See FIRE, page 24

The John Bucyk Arena will see some intense action on Aug. 18, when members of the east and west Kootenay roller derby leagues take part in two exhibition bouts during A Black Eye Affair. They will be joined by members of Creston’s fledgling team, the Black Eyed Cherries, which was started after exhibition bouts played here in April. “It’s our goal to recruit more players after this event,” said Creston team member Amanda “Kerrazy” Kerr. With their arena time sponsored by local Regional District of Central Kootenay directors, the nine Cherries practice twice a week. Four of their players have been “benchmarked” — they meet the minimum skills for game play — and five others are well on their way. One more member is needed to create a full team to compete in the East Kootenay league next year, in a season that runs from March to September; the East Kootenay Roller derby League’s playoffs run Sept. 15 in Marysville. Without travelling, this is the last chance for local women to see what it’s all about. “You don’t have to be in the best shape of your life,” said Kerr, who also plays with Kimberley’s Bavarian Barba-

n Aug. 20, a few improvements will take effect in the Creston Transit System. To better serve Creston, BC Transit is introducing the new Route 1 town shuttle that will link some of the busiest destinations including the downtown core, the Creston Valley
Hospital, Creston Valley Mall, the Creston and District Public Library and businesses at the Highway 3/3A junction. Route 1 will also see the return of routing to Erickson with three trips a day. Flexible routing on the town shuttle will allow people with mobility issues to get closer to their destinations, especially those who live in the Centennial Park area where door-to-door service can be booked with 24-hour notice. Routes 2 and 3 will come to a close on Aug. 19, and resources from those under-performing routes will be redirected to the town shuttle, which will offer targeted service to these areas. Next generation takes over Pridham Studio
Who: Micah and Jeremiah Wassink What: Handbuilt, hand-painted pottery Where: Pridham Studio on 12th Avenue North, the Saturday Creston Valley Farmers’ Market When: Since summer 2011 Why: It gave them a chance to return to their hometown and start a family
BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
After 11 years in Victoria, Micah and Jeremiah Wassink had had enough of city life. They had got what they wanted out of it — education, careers, experience — but it wasn’t, well, let’s say, feeding their souls. Then, in 2011, they seriously began to explore an opportunity that had been on the table for a couple of years. Nancy and David Pridham, Micah’s parents, had fallen in love with Mexico’s Baja California, and their house and business were up for sale. Now, more than a year later, Micah and Jeremiah have settled back into their hometown and they couldn’t be happier. “I spent many years working at craft fairs with my mom and hanging out in the gallery,” Micah says. “When I was in high school I worked with her, doing clay work and pottery painting.” It was while attending Prince Charles Secondary School that Micah met Jeremiah Wassink. She was active in school and community theatre and, a few years later, the young couple headed for Vancouver Island so she could study theatre at the University of Victoria. “I loved it,” she says. Her original intention was to focus on acting, but within a month of starting classes, she knew her real passion was in design. After graduating, she worked in the film industry. “I worked in the costume

department when I got involved in the film scene,” she says. “On-set costume work kept me busy.” She also got involved with the Pacific Opera Victoria. “That was a great experience. I loved the people and the atmosphere.” While Micah was establishing herself in wardrobe and costume design, Jeremiah, who also had artistic interests, entered the welding trade. “My first really good job involved making ornamental gates and fencing, but it was a little different because we worked entirely in aluminum,” he recalls. Aluminum stands up to the damp, salty atmosphere of an ocean-side environment, but it’s a tricky and demanding metal to work with. “I really liked the hands-on aspect of welding.” But the artist in him eventually began pulling Jeremiah toward a more creative life. “I had always liked drawing. Originally I had planned on going into graphic design before my focus shifted to welding.” He was thinking about going back to school to study art when he and Micah began to talk about purchasing her mom and dad’s home and business. “We sat down and went over the numbers and began to see how we could make it work,” he says. “Then we went to the bank and figured out how to make it a reality.” Purchasing Pridham Studio offered Jeremiah and Micah the chance to come back home to Creston, perfect timing because they wanted to start a family and didn’t want to raise kids in the city. “We were ready to settle down and this

gave us that opportunity,” Jeremiah says. “I grew up in this house, so it was a little strange for a couple of months,” Micah smiles. “It was a bit interesting at first, wondering how it would be working with my mom as we began the transition to take over the business, but it quickly became apparent that it wouldn’t be an issue.” Jeremiah says learning a new trade was just what he was looking for. “As I got deeper into the welding trade I began to realize I didn’t want to go deeper into it. I got tired of working in an industrial setting.” When they returned to Creston last summer, they set to work learning a business that Nancy and David had built up into a successful enterprise. Micah naturally fell into painting the designs on the pottery that Jeremiah was soon turning out — mugs, plates, bowls and the like — useful and decorative items that have found a strong appeal among buyers throughout B.C., and in Alberta and Idaho, too. Nancy’s hand-painted designs, many created especially for a specific environment — black bears for the Banff area, for instance, or the orange bridge in Nelson — meant that Micah and Jeremiah had an established market to start out with. “People are expecting something and you have to produce,” Jeremiah says. “We were fortunate to have purchased such a well-established business. David and Nancy went through a lot of trial and error to get production up to a certain level and the losses are quite low.” Customers arriving at Pridham Studio, a converted garage attached to the house, are used to a quiet, reflective atmosphere as they wander among the pottery shelves and dis-
plays. Their visit often extends into the backyard, where the Wassinks have continued the Pridham tradition of gardening, growing much of their own food in the secluded space. “We’ve been eating out of it for months,” says Jeremiah. While Micah describes the business takeover as “quite seamless” — “All of our galleries are quite thrilled to get the same products they have always received” — it involved a lot of intense focus and training. A typical day starts at 6 a.m. to fire up the kilns and keeping the studio open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A motion sensor alerts the pair to arrival of customers when they are busy working in the adjacent studio. While Pridham Studio pottery can be found in galleries from Whistler to Banff and south into Sandpoint, the Kootenays are a large part of the business. Retail sales remain strong in Nelson, Kaslo, Invermere, Trail, Fernie, Golden, Rossland, Grand Forks and Christina Lake. “And we know there is room to grow, especially into Calgary and other Alberta markets, as well as the Okanagan.” Owning a business “definitely makes you want to push that much harder,” Jeremiah admits. They have become regulars at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market each Saturday and are just beginning to find time to put their own stamp on the business. Micah has created some new designs and Jeremiah has introduced some new shapes, like spoon rests and goblets. They recently teamed up with Brandy Dyer at Creative Fix to produce a line of pottery using designs Dyer originally created for Town of Creston street banners. “I love partnering with other businesses and Nancy helped me work on the banner designs, so this is a perfect match, working with Pridham Studio,” Dyer said when she introduced the new items into her store. Jeremiah is working on teapot designs these days, trying to find just the right balance between form and function. “A teapot has to look good, function properly and feel good in the hand,” he says. “There is a lot of experimentation involved and I love the challenge. And this winter we want to experiment with small runs of unique shapes — that should be fun!” Winter promises to be fun in other ways, too. Micah and Jeremiah are expecting their first child in January. It is such a momentous event that Nancy and David will make a midwinter journey back to Creston from their Galeria Bahia to be part of the occasion. “It’s exciting for us to be among a younger generation that is coming back to Creston,” Micah says. “We are part of a younger crowd with their families, people who want to enjoy what this valley has to offer,” Jeremiah echoes. “Creston is a beautiful place and we feel like we have a great future here.” “And we have no plans to go anywhere else,” Micah adds.

watercraft and activities BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Summer on the lake may bring to mind thoughts of motorboats and jet skis, but the Riondel Parks and Recreation Society is again preparing a summer event that keeps the fun and promotes non-motorized water activities — the second annual Riondel Milk Jug Regatta. The Aug. 25 event at Riondel’s north bay beach is comprised of two segments, a poker paddle in the morning and shallow water races in the afternoon. With the latter event, the catch is that the watercraft must be made of recyclable materials. “We wanted to sponsor something that got people thinking about the water in ways that didn’t involve gasoline,” said treasurer Fran O’Rourke. Sign-up for the poker paddle starts at 9 a.m. For a $10 entry fee — which goes toward the construction of a community kayak stand — adults can navigate their non-motorized craft along a predetermined route and collect five playing cards, with the best poker hand earning prizes. Following a hotdog lunch, the afternoon’s shallow water races include one using any flotation device, such as an air mattress or inner tube, and the highlight race, in which participants race watercraft made with any materials accepted in recycling bins. A $2 entry fee is donated to the community roof fund, and allows racers to have a lot of fun, if last year’s
race is any indication. One entry was a large cardboard box with a plastic bag wrapped around the bottom, and one boy filled a laundry basket with milk jugs, turned it upside down and sat on it. “He didn’t make it far, but he had fun,” said O’Rourke.

When moments add up to a day
On Sunday, my mind wandered back to the early days of this column. It would have been 1989 and if memory serves it was the second “This is the Life effort. If memory doesn’t serve, forgive me — 1,100 or so columns is probably a bit too much to remember accurately. Anyway, I digress. Not so long before that particular column I had watched a video featuring the great monologue performer Spalding Grey. He had described what he called a perfect moment and the idea burned itself into my thoughts. The stimulus for the perfect moment that became a column topic was a visit on a sunny summer day to chat with a gentlemen who sold antiques from his home near Armstrong Bay on Kootenay Lake. Reg and his wife were gracious hosts and I enjoyed the tour through the shop they called Mousehole Antiques, a room or two in their lovely home. Afterward, we sat and sipped tea, looking out over the lake and having an interesting and wideranging conversation. When I left their home to make the drive home, I was struck with how fortunate I was to have a job that allowed me the freedom to visit with such interesting people, and about how grateful I was that, 10 years earlier, we had chosen to make the Creston Valley our home. In the decade since relocating from Calgary, we had been blessed
its worst, it induces moments of jitters — those fortunately short periods of time spent staring at a computer screen, grasping at straws for inspiration. In either situation there is a common denominator — I rarely know exactly what direction a column will take until it’s underway. And I never know how it will end until I get there. This particular effort is a prime example. I knew Lorne Eckersley what I wanted to write about — a series of perfect moments that strung together to scrapped and it would be another form a perfect day — but I also four years before I moved away wanted to give the subject some from the business to spend a context. dozen years at other endeavours. Harper gov’t creates its own reality
To the Editor: Lorne Eckersley raised an important issue in his July 5 column, “Waving the Flag”: the simple-minded attempt at mind control in the latest propaganda package from MP David Wilks. David should be well versed in that, having recently recanted in his effort to voice an independent opinion. Can an ordinary MP have a chance of voicing thought when long respected institutions have been muzzled, such as the Science Council of Canada, environmental workers, fisheries critics and more? Recently, scientists held a march in Ottawa, a mock funeral procession with a coffin labelled “The Death of Evidence.” Under the Big Brother government, reality is no longer studied but created, a postmodernist concept imported from the George Bush government. The muzzling of all departments to speak freely to the public was followed by the elimination of the national science advisor position. This paranoia that the public might become aware of something contrary to Orwellian thought control has become so intense that Canada’s freedom of information ranking has now fallen to 51st out of 89 countries, falling behind such bastions of freedom as Angola, Columbia and Niger. When truth becomes self-evident through other sources, the Conservative spin doctors reveal their own “paid for” findings, thus chrysotile asbestos (in a Health Canada report) becomes actually harmless, and Tony Clement’s own panel declares safe injection sites are not useful (130 physicians and scientists au contraire). Although the majority of farmers wanted to retain the co-operative Canadian Wheat Board, it was sacrificed to serve the free enterprise agenda. Gun registration was cancelled over the objections of the Association of Police Chiefs. Canada’s Experimental Lakes Area, used for the study of 58 lakes, will be closed. Now we hear that the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory, which monitors the polar atmosphere testing climate models will be dismantled. The most indicative action of the lack of interest in studying reality was the cancellation of the long-form census, without which it is not possible to study thousands of aspects of our lives and plan for future life. Better to create your own realty rather than study what is and prepare for what will be. So distortion of reality is another arrow in the rogue government’s quiver. Couple this with economic terrorism replete with random firings replaced by private contractors and social service cutbacks with threats of more, and you will soon have a populace that is compliant, apathetic, servile and nihilistic. Recently, a special fund for broadcasters to assist in disseminating local news has been cancelled. Ignorance is bliss; the bland can then better lead the blind. Pierre Trudeau astutely observed, “We absent-mindedly bestow these absolute powers over our lives and welfare on a handful of men in elections dominated by fanaticism and gangsterism, generally without asking of them the smallest guarantee of intelligence or of elementary honesty. Should one of them happen to overstep

the bounds, we allow him to be made a judge, or a legislator for life in one of our upper houses. In fact, if we were to extend the powers of the state without having multiplied our means of controlling its policy and limiting its methods of acting, we would tend to increase our enslavement.” Fait accompli, and the fact that the puppet master is someone who believes in the “rapture” raises concern. Committee welcomes refugees
er, Alberta has sent $250 billion more to Ottawa more than it has received in return, for the benefit of every Canadian. How well would Norway do if it had a schoolyard bully taking it’s lunch money? Lastly, China has the power to get its oil regardless of what Canada does. Is burning oil laced with the blood of war more appealing? Everything we consume is created and transported using oil. We are fortunate in Canada to have abundant natural resources and all Canadians are fortunate to have B.C. and Alberta paying more then their fair share. Mike Somerville Wynndel

Variety of chickens offer rainbow of shells
Y
ou’ll never know what to expect when you open a carton of eggs from Shell’s Little Greenhouse — with shells of blue, Story and brown, pink photos by and green, Brian each carton offers a Lawrence colourful and welcome surprise. “Everyone who buys eggs smiles. It makes them happy,” said Shelley Lamb, who moved from White Rock to Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road in 2005. The rainbow of shells is a result of the variety of hens she keeps, many with origins around the world. Among Lamb’s hens are Brahmas (India), Araucanas (Chile) and Minorcas (Spain) — a “smart, quick” breed — as well as her favourite, the Polish top hats. “Polish top hats are a very soft, quiet, timid bird,” she said. “They’ll approach you if they’ve been raised by hand. They’ll let you pick them up and they’re quite content.” Six years ago, she started out with five hens, and now has about 30, which are mostly free-range in the summer. It was an easy decision for her to begin raising them, although she knew very little about doing so. “I’ve always thought they were kind of cool,” Lamb said. “I thought, if I’m living out here, why not?” She’s learned a lot in the last six years, and is still fascinated by her chickens’ interaction. “As a rule, chickens aren’t as dumb as people
think,” she said. “They work as a group and they’re very social. You couldn’t have just one chicken — they need another to survive.” Their family bond is strong, too, and just as evident as with other animals. “They are amazing mothers,” Lamb said. “They just hunt for food all day for those chicks. They have a little call they make when they find food and the chicks come over.” One hen is a brooding hen, and Lamb enjoys putting her to work, and the sometimes surprising results. “I select eggs, put them under her and see what comes out.” The rooster, a Polish top hat, also plays an important part in day-today coop life, besides crowing at the crack of dawn, something Lamb said she quickly became used to. “The rooster watches for danger all day long. ... He gives them food and nests. He loves them,” she said with a laugh, “some more than others.” Raising chickens isn’t a difficult task, and is one Lamb strongly recommends, particularly to people with children. “Kids love chickens,” she said. “They’re good for people who want to get back to the land.” And the “sweet little creatures” make excellent companions. “I enjoy coming out and just being with them,” said Lamb. “They’re very soothing.” For more information, call Shelly Lamb at 250-428-7274.

Time to oppose our reliance on oil
What are we to make to B.C. Premier Christy Clark’s tiff with Alberta Premier Alison Redford? The obvious answer is that Clark knows a gift when it comes on such an obviously golden platter. If our premier hadn’t jumped on the chance to bolster her standing in the polls, she would have taken a prize for stupidity instead.
The Voice of
Experience Peter Hepher
For a few months, at least, she can pose as the heroine of our province, the defender of our rights from the perceived assault by Enbridge, the Alberta oil industry and that province’s government. But how long can that halo crown her head? It depends in part on which comes first: the provincial election due next May or a decision by the National Energy Board, the environmental commission involved and the federal government to go ahead with the proposal to ship Athabasca oilsands crude across north-central B.C. If the Northern Gateway plan is
approved first, Clark will face a major challenge. It is not clear whether a provincial government has the constitutional power to block a project declared by Ottawa to be in the national interest. No doubt B.C. could — and probably would — appeal to the courts, and that might delay things and keep the halo in place for some months more. But the underlying problem for Clark is that it is a very shaky halo. Clark hasn’t said that she will oppose Northern Gateway, period, but only that she won’t allow it to cross B.C. unless certain conditions are met. Certainly those conditions are justifiable (although Clark hasn’t specified the share of revenue she wants) but even if she can negotiate a bargain that satisfies her she will still be far from out of the woods. Her fundamental problem is that a great many British Columbians — including, so far at least, many of the First Nations whose claimed territory the line would traverse — don’t want the pipeline built under any conditions. Perhaps enough of the First Nations can eventually be bribed into consenting, and perhaps the route can be jigged to circumvent the rest. But the project will remain at root an environmental issue rather than simply a political and economic one. And that, of course, is why it constitutes a challenge to all British Columbians.
Granted, the petroleum industry in general and the oilsands in particular have been and could continue to be of considerable economic benefit to Canada and, to a lesser degree, to B.C. But at some point we have to decide whether these benefits are worth paying the environmental price. I think the Northern Gateway project makes facing up to that question unavoidable now. There are, first of all, the risks involved, the possibility of a pipeline break or an oil-tanker spillage, either of which could do immense environmental damage. There is also the inevitability that the contemplated expansion of oilsands production would mean increased environmental hazards at that point. But behind those risks lies, writ larger than ever before in this country, this question: Is this not the time to take a stand against our reliance on oil as our major energy source? Should a resounding no to Northern Gateway be a declaration that it is time our governments and the relevant industries began researching into and developing alternative energy sources in earnest? My answer is an unequivocal yes. But it won’t happen unless a majority of my fellow citizens agree — and take whatever steps they can to voice that agreement loud and clear. Peter Hepher is a retired journalist living in Creston.
or there will be a shuttle service courtesy of BC Transit between the College of the Rockies and Prince Charles Secondary School to the complex. Watch for signs! The fall leisure guide has hit the printer, so watch for it at the complex or around town over the next week or two. It is a bigger guide this time as it is jam-packed with a plethora of programming and information. Don’t forget, we are headed toward our pool shutdown from Sept. 1-14, which is a regular feature of operating an aquatic facility. Basically, water gets drained out of all the pools and all deck, pool and changeroom tiles and grout joints are cleaned, checked and repaired if necessary, as well as all mechanical systems are given the once-over. The shutdown time is consistent with the slowest part of the year and is also timed after the ice has gone in and fieldwork has slowed down. Check out the guide for dryland programs that are designed to cover exercise needs of those aquafitters while we dry out. Now we start planning for your winter and spring programs — a bit frustrating since summer just started a month
ago and the days are getting shorter… Also on the “really cool stuff” agenda this weekend is A Black Eye Affair at the John Bucyk Arena at the community complex. This will be Creston’s own roller derby team, the Black Eyed Cherries, hosting their first Creston derby bout and the family friendly event will be a great way to spend an evening. Doors open Saturday at 5 p.m. and the first whistle is at 6 pm, with tickets available at Black Bear Books and the Chad Smoke Shop. Over the year, this core group of local derby girls has started small, set its sights high and is well on its way to achieving some pretty amazing goals in a short period of time with dedication and perseverance. It promises to be an evening rich with entertainment, plus you will be the first group to use the freshly painted arena and bleachers (but not so fresh that you take some home with you.) Keep your eyes on this group as it will be bringing roller derby to Creston in a big way! Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

free swim from noon-3 p.m. There will be lots of great activities and free stuff, which is why you should check it out — plus you get a chance to see a fairly big television production and crew for our little town. For those of you that have good memories, it will probably be like a mix of the Olympic torch relay and when George Stroumboulopoulos came to Yahk — either way, pretty exciting and lots to see. Parking will be restricted at the complex as that is where they are set up (as well as the baseball field), so you may have to park around the area and walk in

Seniors grateful for CKF funds
Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors members are enjoying the sunshine of summer and have managed several picnics and road trips over the past two months. One favorite was lunch at the museum along with investigating all the treasures housed there. This week we are visiting stone sculptor Stewart Steinhauer at his studio. These trips are exciting and fun and help us continue to be aware of all that our community has to offer. Thank you to the Creston-Kootenay Foundation for the funds we Terry Nowak received to support our errands program. It is already very successful. As people age, their ability to transport themselves greatly diminishes. Many give up their driver’s licences, some cannot use public transportation, some cannot afford taxis. They become dependent on friends who still drive or on family members to access many services. Dependence on others for transportation is not a positive situation. Seniors resist becoming a burden to family and friends and simply quit doing the things they once did. This leads to isolation and loneliness, reduced self-care because medical appointments are not made and frustration and confusion because other important tasks are not completed. Our errands program has solved many of these problems for our seniors. One lady now schedules and attends regular massages, something that was just a dream before this program was funded. The massages are contributing to better balance and improved mobility for her, both indicators of improved health. Other TAPS members are using the program to attend appointments with doctors and pickup prescriptions. Our drivers, Susan and Nellie, are making regular stops at the post office and mailboxes, banks, hairdressers and even the Greyhound depot. According to the World Health Organization, access to appropriate transportation is a determinant of health. This is because of the role it plays in independence and how it shapes an individual’s access to resources. The Creston-Kootenay Foundation has allowed our seniors to remain healthy and independent. In September, TAPS will be starting an education program that will include workshops in several areas of interest and benefit to seniors. The topics to be presented will contribute to the program’s focus for the next year, living well. We will be using this column to keep you informed about the workshops, as well as what else is happening at TAPS and how you can be involved. Enjoy the summer that remains and wave at our busses as they travel around the valley. Terry Nowak is an outreach worker with the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

Kootenays hosting Swimmers compete at Whitecaps camp meet in Kimberley BY BOB HALL Nelson Star
Youth soccer players across the Kootenays will have an opportunity to take their game to the next level fostered through a partnership between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Nelson’s Soccer Quest. At the end of the month, the Whitecaps FC Academy will kick off with two evaluation camps to be held in Cranbrook on Aug. 21 and 22 and Nelson on Aug. 28 and 29. “We have recognized that over the past few years that it is very difficult for certain regions to get exposure, said Dan Lenarduzzi, director of youth development for the Whitecaps. “The academy programs are meant to give players that are already with clubs supplemental training, but also for us to identify players in hopes of moving them up to our more professionalized programs. The academy will include four age groups for both girls and boys: U11/12, U13/14, U15/16 and U17/18. Its reach extends to both the east and west Kootenays, plus the Boundary. The program runs for seven months, starting in September and ending in April (there is a two-
month winter break in December and January). The training includes eight weekends at Nelson’s Soccer Quest indoor facility. Four travel events per age group will also be part of the academy. “It’s a major move for Soccer Quest and for the Kootenays, said Soccer Quest’s Dave Spendlove. Soccer Quest set up its indoor facility in Nelson five years ago. Two years ago, Spendlove started both a boys and girls regional program for 16- to 18-year-old players. Those teams travelled to high performance tournaments throughout Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. The program resulted in 11 post-secondary scholarship offers. The partnership with the Whitecaps is an extension of the work started by Spendlove. This will be the second academy set up outside the Lower Mainland, the first being in Vernon. “The Whitecaps are wanting to extend their brand and their development across Canada, said Lenarduzzi. “To do that we are looking at setting up academy centres in different locations. The Whitecaps feel the academy route is an opportunity to try and even the pitch for young players living in rural B.C. Rotary seeks pros for exchange ROTARY DISTRICT 5080
Rotary Clubs in District 5080, which includes southeastern British Columbia, northern Idaho and eastern Washington, are seeking four outstanding professionals to visit Brazil’s Rotary District 4510 from April 20-May 20, 2013, as part of the Group Study Exchange program of the Rotary Foundation. During the exchange, team members will share personal knowledge of their own country and vocations and experience the customs, vocations and lifestyles of Brazil. District 4510, described as an ecological paradise, is located in the mid-western region of Sao Paulo state. Metal industries, textile manufacturing and agriculture including coffee, sugar cane and oranges make this state the economic and industrial powerhouse of the Brazilian economy.
The purpose of the Group Study Exchange is to promote international understanding and goodwill through person-to-person contact. While abroad, team members stay in Rotarians’ homes and have the opportunity to meet their professional counterparts. They will also give presentations to Rotary clubs and other groups about their home country and respective vocations. The Rotary Foundation provides a round-trip air ticket, and local Rotarians in the host country provide meals, lodging and group travel in their district. Team members pay for personal and incidental expenses including immunizations and visas. People interested in applying should be employed full-time for at least two years in their vocation and be in the early stages of their careers. Young professionals within the age range of 25-40 at the time of the

From page 12 “There are great places to live all over B.C. and all over Canada,” said Lenarduzzi. “Unfortunately, sometimes where people live is a bit of a problem because they are not close enough to some of the larger opportunities. That is the case with our club for sure because obviously a lot of our activities are out of Vancouver. It’s a real good opportunity for us to reach more kids in areas that don’t normally get exposure.” The academy will include monthly coaching visits from Whitecaps staff, led by Whitecaps Okanagan regional head coach David Broadhurst. It will also include Soccer Quest coaches working with approved Whitecaps academy curriculum. Some of that curriculum includes technical development, strength training, nutrition and sport psychology. Starting the academy at a younger age is also an opportunity to immerse players into a soccer culture sooner. “In other countries they start even younger with high performance programs,” said Lenarduzzi. “We feel that if we are going to make a difference in the game we need to start getting kids into these environments sooner. Of course, at those ages you have to make it fun and something they want to be
going to, but if you can identify kids of like-mindedness together earlier then I think you have a better chance of developing that player to a higher level. It’s about growing the base and starting that pyramid a little bit earlier.” Both Lenarduzzi and Spendlove stress that the academy is a regional program. The hope is to gather together the best players from Invermere to Grand Forks. Both men realize this will take a commitment on behalf of families. “You have to pick a centre for everybody to get to,” said Lenarduzzi. “We can’t get to all those locations, so we have to pick a place and put the programming there. There is not many ways around it when you have the geography we have in B.C.” Each age level will take 16 players for both male and female. And though the academy is looking for the best, they want to see as many hopefuls at the camps later this month. “Rather than saying elite, we are looking for the really motivated players,” said Lenarduzzi. “We want players who want to get to the next level. If you really want to get better and you have the physical ability, then we want to have those kids in the program. I think we can make those players better.” Registration for the evaluation camps can only be done online at whitecapsfc.com/kootenay. For more information, call Soccer Quest at 250-3524625 (coach@soccerquest.ca) or the Whitecaps at 778-330-1354 (mbuchi@whitecapsfc.com).

No Island set to span genres and generations SUBMITTED
Vancouver’s No Island will bring their unique and original blend of West Coast indie and classic rock to Creston’s Snoring Sasquatch on Aug. 18 for the third stop on a three-week tour of Western Canada. The group, formed in 2009 by five students in Capilano University’s jazz studies program, has played frequently in the Lower Mainland to a loyal fan base, thrilling packed crowds with their energetic live show and tight musicianship. And while studying music full-time certainly hasn’t hurt either of those things, it has made any extensive touring pretty tough for the band, at least until the present. “I feel a great sense of freedom and excitement,” said lead guitarist and vocalist Keith Sinclair of No Island’s newfound liberation from the postsecondary world. “It’s nice to not have to worry about the
constraints of everybody’s school schedules.” The band’s keyboardist and other vocalist, Andy Rice, assured that concert-goers will be in for an energetic and highly entertaining mix of old and new this Saturday. “We kind of bend the rules of the present while tipping our hat to the past,” he said. And with five members including a saxophonist, No Island is clearly bending a few rules of instrumentation as well. “All of us raided our parents’ record collections when we were growing up and that certainly shows through in a lot of what we write and play,” he explained, “But we also really appreciate the music of today and our own music has quite a bit of that in it as well.” While Rice said that having an element of classic rock “sometimes means No Island gets left off the iPod of an indie purist at a first glance,” it does give the

music a timeless quality and fans “tend to love the band for that ingredient exactly. “At the end of the day, we play what makes us happy,” he said. “You have to remain true to
yourself as a musician. Not everyone in the club is necessarily going to like your music but every one of them will be able to see right away whether or not you’re playing it honestly.”
No Island released their debut album last year, a six-track record called Sign of the Times. A full-length album is in the writing stages and the band hopes to head into the studio after the current tour wraps up in September. For now, however, No Island’s focus is on the road and doing their best to put on a show that is quite literally the talk of the town, wherever they happen to be that particular night. “I really want every show on this tour to really impact whoever hears it,” said Sinclair. “We like to focus on our original material, but we have no problem throwing a really cool cover in here and there. We’ve really tried to make sure there’s a little something for everyone.” For more information, visit www.no-island.com/shows. Tickets are $10 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books and $12 at the doors, which opens at 7 p.m.; the concert begins at 8.

In Loving Memory Of
Jim Broadhurst August 20, 2002
We thought of you with love today But that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday And days before that, too.
So many times we needed you, A million times we cried. If love could have saved you, You never would have died.
We think of you in silence, We often speak your name. All we have are memories And a picture in a frame.
In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place No one can ever ďƒžll.
Your memory is our keepsake, With which we'll never part. God has you in His keeping, We have you in our hearts.
It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn't go alone. For part of us went with you The day God took you home.
August 19, 2007
Just five years ago today Since our sad sorrows fell, But in our hearts we mourn the loss Of her we loved so well. The world may change from year to year And our friends from day to day, But never shall the one we love From memory fade away.
Loved and missed by all your kids

Doors to their concert open at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8. Tickets are $10 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books and $12 at the door.
Advance Staff The Creston and District Public Library is presenting a free showing of the documentary Under African Skies in Millennium Park on Aug. 23. The film is part of the Movies That Make You Think series. Under African Skies was filmed on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Paul Simon’s groundbreaking album, Graceland. Invited to visit by South African musicians when the country was a hotbed of racial and political issues, Simon was pilloried in the press for breaking sanctions against entertainers visiting the country. Graceland eventually became one of the most popular albums in history and is widely regarded as one of the great musical works of the 20th century. Under African Skies shows Simon’s first visit back to South Africa and features interviews with South African musicians who comment on the album’s impact on their lives and their countries. The film will run at 8:30 p.m. Friends of the Cinema, a supportive organization to the Friends of the Library, kicks off its 2012-2013 season pass drive on Aug. 17. A booth will be set up during the TSN Kraft Celebration community party at the Creston and District Community Complex. Tentatively scheduled for the first part of the film season, which this year moves to Prince Charles Theatre, are We Have a Pope, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Lady and Salmon Fishing in Yemen.

Creston Fire Rescue puts out Crawford Hill wildfire
Thursday, August 16, 2012 Creston Valley Advance
Fire
BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Ten Creston Fire Rescue firefighters spent two hours putting out a suspicious wildfire near the Crawford Hill water reservoir on Aug. 4. “There are trails and tree forts in the area,” Deputy Chief Michael Moore said in a press release. “It appears that it is frequented by youth. Adults have to be vigilant in letting their children know a fire in the forests could have a dire impact to our community.” The fire, approximately 50 feet by 100 feet in size, was located just west of the Erickson water reservoir and about 600 feet from the closest residence. It started late in the afternoon, around 4:30, and the time and humidity made it easier to manage. “If the fire started earlier in the day, it might have been a little different story,” Moore said. “It won’t be very long before the fire hazard ratings move to high or extreme, so we ask people to be very careful when out in the forests.” Creston Valley residents are reminded that there are provincial fire bans in place restricting all open burning, except campfires, as well as the use of fireworks and burning barrels. More information on the provincial ban can be found at www.bcwildfire.bc.ca.

From page 1 The Sobrys first took an interest in the franchise, once known as Radio Shack, at an industry show early in 2010. “We even met the CEO (chief executive officer) before we signed an agreement — everyone we met seemed like decent guys.” The Sobrys paid $10,000 for the franchise rights, secured a five-year lease at 1011 Canyon Street and opened in September 2010. “I was really impressed with the customer service we saw at that trade show because customer service is a major part of any business,” he said.

“We have performed our end of the bargain as best as possible, right from our very first quarter, when we were second in sales of Bell (parent company of the Source) products in B.C. and the Yukon. In the first quarter of 2011 we were first in all of Canada. Throughout that year, third place was our lowest performance in sales of Bell cellphones and satellite TV systems. “Having performance like that, you would like to think that you could feel secure.” The agreement between the Source and its franchise holders allows either party to exit the contract without cause. Sobry said he learned by talking to other franchisees in B.C. and Alberta that the Source will open companyowned stores in the communities
From page 1 Helicopters were used to bucket water, dropping it directly on the affected area or filling portable pools they set in place on the mountaintop last week. Firefighters pump water from the pools to fight fires from the ground. Red fire retardant, visible in photographs, has been dropped to form a guard on the southern side of the fire. affected by franchise cancellations. While the Sobrys will remain in business, operating as Lectric Avenue Electronics, the challenge is to find sources for merchandise. “We purchased at least 98 per cent of the products we sold through the Source,” he said. “We only bought from elsewhere what we couldn’t get from the Source. “We intend to continue operating as an independent, locally owned and operated business that makes and spends our money in the same town we live in. We will continue to support our community, including organizations like the Creston Valley Thunder Cats.” He added that Lectric Avenue Electronics has already become a vendor for Telus Mobility cellphones and satellite TV systems.
