Don’t invite Kristy Mattiazzo to a pillow fight. She has a seemingly endless supply of ammunition. Dozens of pillows in every colour of the rainbow, and some that defy it, fill floor-to-ceiling shelves in a corner of her Burnaby warehouse. Plain pillows and frilly ones, square and round, big and small. They share space with scores of bedding sets, towels, floor and table lamps, dining chairs, easy chairs, couches, end tables, candles, vases and even paintings.

Mattiazzo isn’t a hoarder run amok. She’s a property stager for Private Property Staging, filling vacant homes with stylish furniture to make them more alluring to potential buyers. As a realtor herself, Mattiazzo knows the importance of good presentation of a property as a marketing tool. Empty houses take a lot longer to sell, she says, especially in a market where there are more sellers than buyers, as has been the trend in Metro Vancouver this summer. In a

hot market, a staged home can sell for more. But staging a property is more involved than just plopping furniture and accessories into empty rooms to make them look occupied, says Mattiazzo, who was recently named the 2012 Real Estate Staging Association’s North American rookie stager of the year among other accolades. “You have to create an emotional attachment.” She does that by choosing furniture that appeals to the demographic that might be attracted
to a property. For instance, an urban condo will likely attract buyers who do some work from home, so a room will be staged as an office. A five-bedroom home for a family will have a bedroom furnished for kids, complete with an assortment of toys and a giant teddy bear. How that furniture is placed and accessorized is also important, says Mattiazzo, who staged her first property using items from her own home, and opened her warehouse in March. A Burnaby man has been identified as Vancouver’s sixth homicide victim of 2012. Ronald William March, 57, was found stabbed in the lane behind the 3400 block of Renfrew Street around 9 p.m. on Aug. 8. About seven hours later Vancouver police found a “person of interest” driving near Boundary Road and Lougheed Highway and followed him into Vancouver on East Broadway to Nanaimo where they tried to pull him over. The man refused to stop and after a short pursuit collided with a police vehicle at Broadway and Slocan. The driver, a 47-year-old Burnaby man, was arrested for dangerous driving, driving while prohibited and obstruction. There was also an outstanding Burnaby warrant for assault. Since then, Lance Wraye Standberg, has been charged with flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of a vehicle. However, no charges in the homicide have been laid and Vancouver police say the investigation is continuing.

Since 1999, Habitat for Humanity Vancouver has been building a 27-unit townhouse complex on Government Street to provide safe, affordable housing to families who might not otherwise be able to afford a home of their own. Most of the work is done by volunteers from the community, service organizations and businesses. Owners must also contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity.” Recently, crews erected the walls for the complex’s last six units, which are scheduled to be completed and ready for their new owners by December. Clockwise from top left: a volunteer checks the progress of construction; Colm Foley-Wong and Gail Clark cut a piece of wood as the walls are put up on the last phase of the Habitat For Humanity housing project in Burnaby; Workers help lift a section of wall into place, the first time pre-fabricated walls are being used at the complex; A volunteer pauses during construction; DJ Devries secures a section of wall.

Chase ends at Metrotown A motorcyclist who drove dangerously through several communities last Thursday was finally nabbed near Metrotown
after a 90-minute chase. Burnaby RCMP said around 5:30 p.m., the Air One helicopter spotted a motorcycle being driven in a dangerous manner over the Pitt River Bridge. Air One followed the motorcycle as it went in speeds of more than 150 km/h on Lougheed Highway and later exceeded 200 km/h on the freeway. Police tried to stop the motorcycle several times but the driver kept speeding off. Police vehicles backed off but Air One kept visual contact as it went through Coquitlam, Burnaby, New West, Richmond and Vancouver. Just before 7 p.m., it was spotted pulling into an underground parking lot at Metropolis at Metrotown. Police moved in and saw the driver attempt to flee in an SUV being operated by a woman. It was pulled over by Vancouver Police a few minutes later at Kingsway and Olive Avenue, which is in Burnaby just a block east of Central Park. A 2012 black Ducati motorcycle was seized from the parking lot and a 2006 Range Rover SUV was towed following the arrest. Charges of dangerous driving and criminal flight from police are being recommended for a 29-yearold Port Coquitlam man. The SUV driver is not facing charges. newsroom@burnabynewsleader.com

Facing a couch a certain way can draw attention to a feature a realtor wants to show off, like a fireplace or view. Splashes of colour from pillows and paintings can divert attention from undesirable elements like ugly floors. “You control where people are looking,” says Mattiazzo. “There’s an absolute science to it.” Staging also invites potential buyers to linger, envision themselves living in the space, maybe sit in the living room and discuss making an offer. Sometimes they even buy the furniture along with the property. Mattiazzo says staging is more common in the U.S., but is becoming more popular here as realtors seek new marketing tools. Real estate shows on cable TV are also having an impact, creating expectations for how buyers want to see and experience a property. “Price reductions aren’t working because there’s no emotion to it,” says Mattiazzo. While the cost of staging is borne by the homeowner, it can pay off with a quicker sale or a better offer. When Mattiazzo’s firm is contracted, her crew of six organizes and boxes the furniture and accessories the night before and moves it in the next day. “Every day is moving day for us.” Once the staging is in place, everything is polished and dusted so the home will look its best for the photographer and videographer shooting marketing materials as well as potential buyers. Most staged properties sell within 19 days, says Mattiazzo. And while that’s up from the average of 12 days in a hotter market, it’s still better than letting a property languish unsold for months.

Daryl Simpson, the senior vice-president of Bosa Properties, demonstrates one of the builder’s new “Bosa Volt” charging stations they will be installing in their new residential developments.
Getting a charge at new Bosa buildings Mario Bartel

On a glorious summer morning, the view from Bosa Properties’ 18th floor offices in Metrotown is breathtaking. Behind the rise of Burnaby Mountain, the green North Shore mountains from Lighthouse Point to Golden Ears stretch across the boardroom windows. Until the smog, much of it car and truck pollution, settles in. Now Bosa is trying to do something about reducing that haze by installing Phase Two charging stations for electric vehicles in all its new residential developments. Not to protect their executive view, but “we think we ought to be doing this,” says senior vice-president Daryl Simpson.
Take a walk in the park Beneath the tranquil waters of Burnaby Lake, fish live in abundance. You can get to know five species that call the lake home at a free guided walk on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10:30-11 a.m. No registration is required, just meet at the Burnaby Lake Nature House on Piper Avenue. For more information, go to the events calendar at www.metrovancouver. org.
With the increasing availability of electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf, many prospective owners who happen to live in condos are running into a block on their road to zero-emmission transportation. There’s no place in the underground parkades to plug in their car and it’s difficult and expensive to retrofit existing buildings. So beginning with the Sovereign in Burnaby and the Viceroy in New Westminster, as well as other Bosa and BlueSky projects in Coquitlam, Vancouver and Victoria, up to a dozen “Bosa Volt” stations that will charge a car in six to eight hours will be installed in parking stalls near the buildings’ transformer rooms. Each station will have a dedicated meter so the owners
pay the cost of hydro, rather than the strata. It’s an idea whose time has come, says Simpson. “The ability to charge electric vehicles is a huge step in facilitating a greener city and doing our part to support sustainability strategies that are being promoted by Canadian cities. By building these charging stations within our projects, we hope to finally make it easier for people to make the green choice and invest in green alternatives.” And while Simpson concedes making the stations available is a marketing tool like any other feature or amenity in a new development, he says he hopes other builders will follow suit. “Our hope is everyone will jump onto this.” twitter.com/newsleaderfotog

ADRIAN RAESIDE:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Pipeline a big risk Alberta Premier Alison Redford doesn’t seem to understand what the fuss is about. She has been feuding with B.C. Premier Christy Clark over the Northern Gateway pipeline, ever since Clark suggested that B.C. does not get enough benefits from a pipeline which would be operated by a company with a spotty safety record in recent years. In addition, the pipeline would traverse many environmentally sensitive areas and would supply tankers which would travel along B.C.’s northern coast — which means additional risks to B.C. Redford was in Vancouver on Tuesday and reiterated that she doesn’t plan to share any of Alberta’s oil wealth with B.C. Redford’s position on sharing energy royalties isn’t unreasonable. B.C. doesn’t share resource revenues with Alberta, or any other province for that matter. But Redford doesn’t seem to fully comprehend that B.C. is taking the major portion of the risk that this pipeline will bring, with little to show for it. Yes, it would be good to have additional markets for oil. At the same time, Canadians (including Albertans) need to ask what value there is, in the long term, in shipping vast quantities of raw materials overseas. Redford and her fellow oil barons need to understand a few facts about B.C. First and foremost, almost all First Nations along the proposed route oppose this pipeline. They have sufficient legal rights to tie up this project indefinitely in court, if not stop it entirely. Second, B.C. residents do not oppose exports. Ports provide many good jobs here. But they, like most Canadians, also value the environment. B.C.’s environment is a major attraction to many of us, and a big oil spill would be completely unacceptable. – Black Press

B.C. liquor laws finally effective VICTORIA – Here’s a summer scene being played out all over North America. Family van pulls up to the corner store to stock up on a few camping essentials: pop, chips, hot dogs, a case of beer and a bottle of vodka. Not in B.C. you say? It happens every day at rural agency liquor stores around the province. As with many other issues, there is one reality for urban B.C. and another for the rest of us. Selling booze in grocery stores would presumably create anarchy in B.C cities and towns, but villagers and their visitors somehow manage it, just as everyone does across the line in Washington or Alaska. These rural agency stores are “flyspeck operators,” sniffs an acquaintance who spent his career as a union activist in government liquor stores. Picture dusty old bottles on a rickety shelf, greedy owners and poorly trained clerks more likely to sell to under-age drinkers. Similar generalizations can be heard about the hundreds of private liquor stores that have popped up around B.C. since
Tom Fletcher tfletcher@blackpress.ca
they were legalized. And in fact there have been more violations in private stores, revealed in sting operations run by liquor inspectors. In the year ended March 31, 54 private stores were caught selling to a minor, for an 84 per cent compliance rate. Only four government stores were caught, a pass rate of 96 per cent. Five rural agency stores were tested, and one flunked. But here is the telling statistic. In 2010, the government allowed liquor inspectors to employ actual minors to test stores. Previously, they hired people who looked young but were old enough to buy alcohol, As late as 2009, two out of three stores (government or otherwise) sold to them. Problem is, that’s not an actual offence. Now liquor inspectors send

in undercover teens, and relieve them of the evidence when they are allowed to buy booze. The watchdog now has teeth, and compliance has jumped. The government glossed over the poorer performance of private stores. But in fairness, three times as many private stores as government ones were targeted in the new inspections, and the gap is narrow. Government stores also have a huge built-in financial advantage in their wholesale rate, and are generally overstaffed by private sector standards. The B.C. Liberals also moved this spring to make rural agency stores easier to establish. Regulation changes brought the minimum population served from 300 down to 200, and eliminated a vague requirement for a “bona fide community” to exist around the store. Meanwhile, the big booze story this year is cabinet minister Rich Coleman’s plan to sell B.C.’s warehouse and distribution monopoly to a private contractor. The B.C. Government Employees’ Union has protested,

despite assurances that their jobs will continue. B.C.’s burgeoning craft beer industry has looked to Alberta’s all-private model and predicts higher costs. The B.C. Liberal government has been on the defensive from the start, with the NDP pointing to the paper trail of lobbyists with an apparent inside track. It’s great politics, but it matters little to consumers in an increasingly competitive but heavily taxed business. Another new regulation took effect this summer, creating a $525 fine for adults serving minors, on the job, at home or as a bootlegger. Parents who provide booze for their own under-age children are exempted. Previously, penalties applied only to licensed establishments. If the issue really is public safety and teen binge drinking, the job of government is to regulate sales effectively. Once that’s done, no justification remains for government liquor sales. Hold all politicians to the same standard Every so often we still seem to hold politicians’ feet to the fire regarding their spending habits. And, so we should! Besides $16 glasses of orange juice or bills from an oyster bar, we should continue to question the cost of fighter jets and $3 million websites. But why stop at checking up on MPs and MLAs or politicians at city hall? I would like to see the same standards applied to First Nations. Is it just a lack of public interest that the investigative reporters do not find out a bit more about our 80 chiefs who earn more than the Prime Minister? What are his/her duties to justify such outlays? I am also interested in where monies originate, how many members there are in each community, the average family income of those employed and average income of all concerned. Let’s also hear what percentage of employable people are actually
employed and how these figures compare to those of non-Native residents in their vicinity,if applicable. What is accomplished when chiefs or their deputies travel? Are they involved in trying to upgrade life for band members, or do they use taxpayer money to participate in unproductive activities? In other words, apply all standards as if the money came out of our own pockets. Most of it probably does. At the same time I congratulate those individuals who manage to earn income outside of band activities, such as the the enterprises set up by Chief Robert Louie in Westbank. Capitalist ventures are what made this continent shine and attracted others to come from far away to join those willing to roll up their sleeves. Ziggy Eckardt Burnaby
Time for a change For years, the BC Liberals have been talking about how they’re
the only party that can protect the B.C. economy. Let’s have a look at the real record, instead of spin from a flailing government desperate to keep its hold on power. GDP growth during the NDP governments was a above three per cent per year, on average, including the dot com burst. BC Liberal average GDP growth was three per cent a year, even when discounting the 2008 economic downturn. For the 11 years of BC Liberal governance, the province has had the highest overall poverty rate in Canada, surpassing even the territories in people per capita that were below the LICO (Low Income Cut-offs) poverty line. For children, the BC Liberals have given B.C. the highest poverty rate for the past eight years, entirely within the decade in which they were in power. Thanks to a stall in the minimum wage, overall average wages remained stagnant under the BC Liberals, while wages grew under the BC NDP.
Income tax rates have been lowered by the BC Liberals, but the number of user fees for public services has increased dramatically, creating additional tax burdens on the middle class, and creating entirely new tax burdens on those who were otherwise not required to pay income taxes in previous administrations. Under the BC Liberals, resource extraction has paradoxically become more important, but less valued. The BC NDP left office with a longterm plan to preserve the forestry sector for decades, a plan that the Liberals decimated and replaced with market solutions that have now created a medium-term forestry crisis. Resource extraction increases have not led to increases in jobs in those sectors, as the BC Liberals have focused on exporting raw resources outside of the province, rather than creating value-added jobs in B.C. processing B.C. timber and minerals. Instead, corporations have successfully
lobbied the BC Liberals into exporting our natural wealth to overseas plants, only to have individuals buy back the finished product at higher prices than if they were manufactured in Canada. Beyond the cuts in income tax that predominantly affected the upper classes of society, BC Liberal taxation policy has created a more regressive system, causing greater burdens on those making less than $100,000 per year. In particular, the cost of flat taxes such as the carbon tax and the HST have been more significant than the rebate cheques given out by the province, and are less likely to be usable when lower income individuals need the money. It’s time for a change; the choice should be clear on which party stands for British Columbians in need, and which one stands with the CEOs that simply do not care about your well being. As the Port Mann bridge replacement nears completion, Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom says he is “optimistic” that the toll can be lowered below $3 per crossing, at least for the first year. Lekstrom said in an interview this week that his discussions with the corporation set up to build the 10-lane bridge indicate it may be possible to reduce the toll rate by extending the debt repayment period. When the project was announced, a $3 toll was calculated to pay the bridge off over 40 years. Lekstrom said he has heard from many people who consider that toll too high, especially since the bridge will function

with only eight lanes for the first year. The old bridge must be taken down before the last two lanes can be connected to Highway 1. So would a toonie get you across during the first year? Lekstrom wouldn’t give specific number until the entire tolling framework is released, which is expected to be in early September. There will be a second round of ministry advertising at that time, to explain the rates and payment options that will take effect when the bridge opens in December. The eastern portion of the South Fraser Perimeter Road will open at the same time, giving drivers a faster route to the Pattullo Bridge as an

alternative to the toll bridge. Lekstrom said he expects some people to try that, but soon recognize the time saving of the new Port Mann. “To divert from the Port Mann to the Pattullo and then get back onto your way, I think people might do it once or twice to say look, I’m opposed to tolling,” Lekstrom said. “But I couldn’t imagine going through that frustration to save a couple of dollars.” Lekstrom said he’s also confident that the promised rapid bus service will be in place from day one. If TransLink’s $30 million funding shortfall isn’t covered by savings from an ongoing audit of the regional transit group, he said he’s committed to work with communities to find the money. The prospect of a lower toll didn’t impress Jordan Bateman, B.C. Director of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. “Lower Mainland drivers already pay more than a billion dollars a year in gas taxes,” Bateman said. “We deserve to know that money is flowing into roads and bridges before we get dinged for tolls.” Lekstrom said he is also prepared for people to claim that a one-year discount on tolls is designed to ease the backlash against his unpopular government going into an election year. Critics say the same thing about paving Photo: Tim Matheson highways and building schools and hospitals, he said.

Burnaby RCMP gearing up for Tour de Coast
NEW
!
Five members of the Burnaby RCMP are gearing up to ride in this September’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast bike tour. Constables Michel Ling, Sebastien Simard, Iain Thomson and Tammy Anonson, along with Sergeant Stephan Brossard will pedal 900 kilometers beginning Sept. 19-27 to raise money for research into childhood cancers and to send kids affected by the disease to Camp Goodtimes. Besides training for the grueling ride that will take the cyclists throughout the Lower Mainland and up to the Sunshine Coast, the officers are also holding fundraising events, like a recent chili lunch at the Burnaby RCMP detachment. “It’s a fun way to bring the detachment and city employees together to support a great cause,” said Ling. “This is one of several fundraisers we hold every year.” To learn more, and support the Burnaby riders, go to www. copsforcancerbc.ca

Sparks up for big field upgrade
ROYAL SWIPE
MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADER
Burnaby Buzzards second baseman Jack Allen misses the tag on Burnaby Royals baserunner Phil Gallie as he steals the bag in their Lower Mainland Baseball Association 45+ game, Saturday at Robert Burnaby Park. The Royals won the game 10-7.
The Burnaby Girls Sparks under-12 soccer team is one of 15 finalists for a national contest that will see the winner get $125,000 for a facility upgrade. The public can vote for its favourite team in the BMO Team of the Week national championships up until Aug. 27. Last year’s winner received more than 74,000 votes. The top prize not only includes a field upgrade, but a $5,000 donation toward a charity as well as a trip to either a Major League Soccer game in Canada, or a Canadian national team home match. Last year, the Sparks raised $1,000 for The Salvation Army’s Adopt-a-Family program. For more information go to www.burnabygirlssoccerclub. com and click on BMO Team of the Week at the top which also provides links to voting. The winner will be announced Sept. 5 on Canada AM.
SPORTS BRIEFS
Little Lions pounce in pre-season The Burnaby Lions peewee team won both of its games at a pre-season minor football tournament in South Delta last weekend. The Lions didn’t allow a first down in defeating the South Delta Rams 13-0. Quarterback B.J. Clarke rushed for a touchdown and threw another to Zachery Northgraves. In the second game, the Lions, who were 0-12 last season, blanked the Cloverdale Links 6-0 with Clarke ripping off two runs of more than 60 yards.
Thunder sign Finn The Lower Mainland Ringette League Thunder, which plays many of its games in Burnaby, has signed Finnish import Tiina Mononen for the 2012-13 season. She joins fellow Finn Salla Kyhala, who was
named the National Ringette League’s most valuable player in 2011-12 as well as being the league’s leading scorer. “Tiina is an exceptional ringette player. Her speed and skill put her in a group with the top players in the world,” said Thunder head coach Chris Wakefield in a press release. “Having a player of Tiina’s stature choosing to join the LMRL Thunder demonstrates that our program is one of the best in the world.” Monomen’s team won the Finnish Elite League championship and the world club championship in 2011-12. She was also on Team Finland’s world championship squads in 2007 and 2010.
