RCMP give bogus bills warning The RCMP would like to advise the business communities throughout the Interior of the Province that several areas have recently experienced a spike in counterfeit money passing. Since 2012-07-26, RCMP have received twenty three (23) complaints where counterfeit currency was either passed or attempted to be passed in the communities of Oliver, Osoyoos, Okanagan Falls, Penticton, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Salmon Arm and Kamloops. These incidents involve Canadian Bank Notes in the $20, $50 and $100 denominations from the Canadian Journey Series (2001 – 2006). The public, merchants and businesses should always check the security features of the Bank Note before accepting. The security features to check are: - the watermark or Ghost image, - the security thread, - the overall print quality, - the metallic or holographic strip and, - the puzzle number or see through number. “The typical Modus Operandi is for the passer to make an inexpensive purchase and pay with a large denomination, in turn receiving a large percentage of change back in authentic currency, leaving the bogus bill in the till. Feel, look and Àip the bank note to check the security features.” stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk. The RCMP would like to raise awareness to the public, businesses and merchants of these recent incidents involving counterfeit currency. For more information on counterfeiting prevention go to the Bank of Canada website at http://www.bankofcanada.ca/banknotes/counterfeit-prevention.

The Kimberley Ladies Golf Club and one of the oldest and most beautiful golf courses (circa 1924) in the valley recently played host to the Glam Slam for the Mamm a fundraising event for East Kootenay Foundation for Health. Initiated by Barb Thompson and her organizing committee of Jeannette Lavoie, Sandy Peters, Sue Osterkampf, Bev McCormick and Flora McLean, the ladies invitational encouraged female golfers to put on their ¿nest glamorous golf out¿t (hopefully with a pink accent) all in support of the A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign. The idea and day did not disappoint as 67

golfers took to the links with varying attire including pink feather boas, sunglasses, bling bling bracelets, and tiaras all combined with a tireless passion for a campaign that is going to bring signi¿cant bene¿ts for individuals receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. The course was in stunning shape and welcomed a few fun games including the longest drive closest to the squiggly line, longest putt, closest to the pin and the opportunity to utilize the skills of Shawn Diacon (Assistant Pro) and three upcoming junior golfers Julia Dereniwsky, Russell duToit, or Zach Singer to make your drive on the ¿rst hole.

(From left) Tom Vold, Course Manager for the Kimberley Golf Course joins Donna Grainger (EKFH) and Barbara Thompson (Glam Slam for the Mamm Event Coordinator) to celebrate the gift of $5,040 for A Clear View. Thanks to spotters Terry Thompson and Jim Sirrs many of those tee shots

were quickly found and resulted in birdies on the scorecard.

The Kimberley Ladies Golf Club is also ecstatic to have received generous support from individuals and businesses who gave not only a ¿nancial gift but an array of wonderful items as prizes. The glam didn’t stop there as golfers were enticed to tables featuring leather goods, jewellery, scarves and purses all up for sale with proceeds going toward the mammography equipment. “It is just so rewarding to see the results of our fun little tournament,” shares Barb Thompson, Event Coordinator. “The biggest highlight was not just the individual support but when the Kimberley Golf Club Society decided to participate by donating one-half the revenue from the day’s green fees and golf carts boosting our grand total to $5040 it was very gratifying.” Thanks to early leadership gifts, public donations and events such as the Glam Slam for the Mamma the campaign has just surpassed the $855,000 mark. The A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign requires 100% public donations to make the goal a reality. Each and every corner of the East Kootenay is rising to the occasion. It is you… the public, which is the part of the picture to bring the best in diagnostic imaging equipment for breast cancer to the region. The ability to triumph is within reach, EKFH wishes to thank you for your continued support of this most worthwhile campaign. Japanese dignitaries visit sister city of Sparwood Submitted On August 9, the District of Sparwood welcomed dignitaries Consul General Hideki Ito and Consul for Cultural Affairs Tetsuya Isono from the Japanese Consulate in Vancouver, BC. Consul General Ito

commented “My recent focus has been on visiting cities in our area of service, namely British Columbia and Yukon, which have twin relations with Japanese cities. There are 34 cities in BC and 1 in Yukon with sister-city ties in Japan and I have been aware of the important

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A5 role that those relationships play in strengthening the bonds between Canada and Japan. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, my understanding of the value of these sister-city connections has been further conÂżrmed as I have witnessed the part they played in supporting the disaster struck region and I have been taking as much time as possible to visit those sister-cities and

meet with their mayors and sister-city committee members. “We are delighted to welcome Consul General Ito and Consul for Cultural Affairs Isono to our beautiful community, says Mayor Lois Halko. “Council is pleased to have an opportunity to meet and discuss ways to strengthen our relationship with our sister city Kamisunagawa says Halko.

Members of Council met with Consul General Ito and Consul for Cultural Affairs Isono at the District Of¿ce and ended their day with a tour of Lilac Terrace and Fire Hall #1. The return trip included a stop at St. Mary’s Band Of¿ce to meet with Chief Cheryl Casimer. PHOTO SUBMITTED

Academy takes young soccer players to the next level By Bob Hall Youth soccer players across the Kootenay will have an opportunity to take their game to the next level fostered through a partnership between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Nelson’s Soccer Quest. At the end of the month the Whitecaps FC Academy will kick

off with two evaluation camps to be held in Cranbrook on August 21 and 22 and Nelson on August 28 and 29. “We have recognized that over the past few years that it is very dif¿cult for certain regions to get exposure,” said Dan Lenarduzzi, director of youth development for the Whitecaps. “The academy

Its reach extends to both the East and West Kootenay, plus the Boundary. boys and girls regional program for 16 to 18 year old players. Those teams travelled to high performance tournaments throughout Western Canada and the Paci¿c Northwest. The program resulted in 11 post-secondary scholarship offers. The partnership with the Whitecaps is an extension of the work started by Spendlove. This will be the second academy set up outside the Lower Mainland, the ¿rst being in Vernon. “The Whitecaps are wanting to extend their brand and their development across Canada,” said Lenarduzzi. “To do that we are looking at setting up academy centres in different locations.” The Whitecaps feel the academy route is an opportunity try and even the pitch for young players living in rural BC. “There are great places to live all over BC and all over Canada,” said Lenarduzzi. “Unfortunately, sometimes where people live is a bit of a problem because they are not close enough to some of the larger opportunities. That is the case with our club for sure because obviously a lot of our activities are out of Vancouver. It’s a real good opportunity for us to reach more kids in areas that don’t normally get exposure.” The academy will include monthly coaching visits from Whitecaps staff, led by Whitecaps Okanagan regional head coach David Broadhurst. It will also include Soccer Quest coaches working with approved Whitecaps academy curriculum. Some of that curriculum includes technical development, strength training, nutrition and sport psychology. Starting the academy at a younger age is also an opportunity to im-

merse players into a soccer culture sooner. “In other countries they start even younger with high performance programs,” said Lenarduzzi. “We feel that if we are going to make a difference in the game we need to start getting kids into these environments sooner. Of course at those ages you have to make it fun and something they want to be going to, but if you can identify kids of like-mindedness together earlier then I think you have a better chance of developing that player to a higher level. It’s about growing the base and starting that pyramid a little bit earlier.” Both Lenarduzzi and Spendlove stress that the academy is a regional program. The hope is to gather together the best players from Invermere to Grand Forks. Both men realize this will take a commitment on behalf of families. “You have to pick a centre for everybody to get to,” said Lenarduzzi. “We can’t get to all those locations, so we have to pick a place and put the programming there. There is not many ways around it when you have the geography we have in BC.” Each age level will take 16 players for both male and female. And though the academy is looking for the best, they want to see as many hopefuls at the camps later this month. “Rather than saying elite, we are looking for the really motivated players,” said Lenarduzzi. “We want players who want to get to the next level. If you really want to get better and you have the physical ability, then we want to have those kids in the program. I think we can make those players better.” Registration for the evaluation camps can only be done online at whitecapsfc.com/ kootenay. For more information call Soccer Quest at 250-352-4625 (coach@soccerquest. ca) or the Whitecaps at 778-330-1354 (mbuchi@whitecapsfc. com).

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Changes to City Garbage Collection to Begin September 1

Starting on September 1, 2012, the City will only collect a maximum of three (3) garbage receptacles per week per household. City Council approved the amendment to the Solid Waste Collection bylaw at their regular meeting of August 13. The intent of the amendments to the bylaw is to further encourage recycling and composting thereby reducing the amount of garbage required to be disposed of each week. The Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw also limits the size of receptacles (either containers or bags) to 100 litres and receptacles cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms each. Garbage containers are to have a water tight cover and smooth rim, must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have fixed handles. Plastic bags are to be securely tied closed at the top and be strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting. For more information about solid waste pickup, your scheduled collection dates or to review the Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw, visit the City of Cranbrook website at www.cranbrook. ca, click on the ‘Residents’ tab, and click ‘Solid Waste Pickup’.

14th Avenue South Construction Work Expected for Six Weeks The City of Cranbrook wishes to advise the public using 14th Avenue South, from 10th Street South to 13th Street South, will experience short traffic disruptions beginning on Monday August 13, 2012. Once full construction starts, there will be road some closures in effect; primarily 14th Avenue South from 12th Street South to 13th Street South for approximately six weeks. Motorists are asked to please follow any detours in place as directed for the duration of the work. The City of Cranbrook apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates the patience of residents as these temporary traffic closures are in place.

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Evergreens Forever Looking around your yard and garden in the summer, chances are your eyes are caught by the brilliant colours of hanging baskets and the abundant splendor of planted flowerbeds. But their beauty is fleeting - some of them may fade as the cooler months are approaching, and this is when you will see the constant companions in your yard, such as evergreens, providing year-round interest. Evergreens have always been a traditional favorite and a focal point in the yard. They have a rugged beauty and their brilliant needles last year-round. Long after the leaves have fallen and blossoms have faded, you can count on these beauties to greet you day in and day out with their colors unchanged. Evergreens are available now in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes; you are sure to find a plant to fit every corner of your yard. Traditionally, evergreens are most commonly used to make formal and informal hedges. The Emerald Cedar is a popular hedging plant, due to its narrow, pyramidal shape. This cedar has attractive bright green foliage and is very tolerant of pruning and shaping, making it a great choice for creating topiaries and animal sculptures as well. Cedars, however, are known to be a favourite for deer as well and these unwanted four-legged visitors to your yard will try to do some shaping for you if the cedars are not protected. A great deer-resistant alternative is the Moonglow Juniper. This plant has a dense, compact branching habit and intense silvery-blue foliage. It will reflect bright moonlight, giving the juniper its name. But these plants don’t have to be banished to the edges of your property. Evergreen trees and shrubs also make great statements as single specimen plants in your lawn, as an accent plant in conjunction with other ground covers or providing a background for a mass planting. A great evergreen to provide the WOW factor for your yard is the Globe Blue Spruce. This spruce has an exceptional blue colour and grows into a dwarf, flattop globe. The low-graft specimen makes a great accent in a low shrub or perennial bed. Top-grafted onto a tall stem, this spruce has a “lollipop” look and makes a great conversation piece. The Globe Blue Spruce is a moderate grower and maintains its shape well on its own, although it can be sheared for a more uniform appearance. Whatever you are looking for to create more all-season interest in your yard, don’t count out the evergreens and you will be a fan forever. Till next time... happy gardening Submitted by Tara

Obituaries OBITUARY

Brady John William Dilts November 27, 1985-August 9, 2012 Brady John William Dilts also known as “Roo-ski” or “big Brady” was born in Cranbrook BC on November 27th, 1985. He left us tragically and suddenly on August 9th, 2012. Brady was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend known for his love for adventure and fun. His passion for hunting, fishing, being in nature, playing sports, being strong and physically fit were second only to his love for his family, friends and his dogs. Brady's exemplary work ethic led him to employment at various construction sites, but he got the most satisfaction from his positions as an Occupational First Aid Attendant in the northern oil fields. Brady's soft heart, compassion for others and care for the less fortunate will forever be remembered and missed. Memorial Service to be held at 10:30am on Saturday August 18th, 2012 at Cranbrook First Baptist Church. Graveside Service at 2:30pm at Baynes Lake Cemetery followed by a Celebration Luncheon at the Baynes Lake Hall. Donations can be made to the Cranbrook SPCA in memory of Brady's love of animals and years of volunteering.
