It won’t happen in time for the provincial election next spring, but the B.C. Liberal government is moving ahead with Premier Christy Clark’s pledge to examine online voting at the local and provincial level. Some municipalities have suggested modernizing elections to make voting more convenient, and reverse the recent trend to lower voter participation. Clark proposed the idea during last year’s B.C. Liberal leadership campaign. On Aug. 12, Justice Minister Shirley Bond said she has asked Chief Electoral Officer Keith Archer to set up an expert panel to make recommendations. Archer asked the government last year to give him authority to conduct pilot projects for electronic voting, and to consider extending voter registration to 16- and 17-year-olds, as has been done in Australia and some American states. During his leadership bid, Health Minister Mike de Jong proposed lowering the voting age from 18 to 16, to encourage younger people to get involved as part of their secondary school education. Nola Western, deputy chief electoral officer at Elections BC, said the panel will likely need until 2014 to recommend changes to the Election Act that would permit online voting. Independent experts on Internet security and electoral administration will be asked to serve on a committee chaired by Archer, with a first meeting expected by October. Elections BC already has online voter registration, as well as data sharing with the federal voters’ list, ICBC and the B.C. Vital Statistics Agency to keep the voters’ list up to date. Western said online voting has been used in Halifax and Markham in Ontario, but has not yet been tried at the provincial or federal level in Canada.

This will help our treasury balance. She adds Sunrise Ford is a terrific community supporter with all the programs it assists with. The Drive One 4UR Community is a great opportunity for area residents to participate in a fundraiser. Ford Canada pays $20 for every fiveminute drive someone takes in a car, truck or SUV, and all the earn-
ings are donated to CrimeStoppers. There is no cost to the drivers, just the time to come out and take a vehicle for a spin. Ford Canada and Sunrise Ford will give up to $6,000 to

Fire departments pleased with fishing derby results By Diana Forster Thankfully, a light breeze made the 30C temperature bearable for our local firefighters’ annual August fishing derbies at Deka and Sulphurous/ Hathaway lakes. Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department sold 425 tickets, which included 67 children, for their Aug. 4-5 derby. Fishers brought in 97 fish. Of 52 lake trout reeled in, the largest at 14 lbs. 8 oz was brought in by Deka’s Bob Grotke who won first prize and the Don and Marion Traill Trophy. Lauren Zink took second for her 8 1b. 10 oz catch and Dave Sowles was third at 7 1b. 5 oz. Tw e n t y - s e v e n kokanee were weighed. First prize went to eight-year-old Marrisa Ramsay of Williams Lake for her 1 lb. 8 oz. specimen. Nilo Toiovanen and 88-year-old Emil Parker tied for second place with 1 lb. 4 oz. catches. Jeff Potratz brought in the largest of 18 rainbow trout, with his three-pound catch. Trevor McGowan’s fish weighed 2 1b. 3 oz.,
Shaw, l lb. Twelve kokanee were caught, including Jim Scott’s winner at 2 lb. 1 5 oz. It was followed by Wayne Lush, 2 lb. l3 oz.; Barry Ott, l lb. l4 oz.; and Eric Haen, l lb. l oz. In the children’s pikeminnow category, Jack and Johnny
Drescher tied with 15 each. Catching 10 each were Cassandra May, Chelsea and Tyler Humphreys, and Krystal and Kaitlynn Brooker. The patio fire-pit door prize went to Kevin Marshall. “It was slow pickings,” said statistician
Bryan Austerberry, “but lots of fun.” Both fire departments are extremely grateful to their generous prize donors, their many “helping hands,” especially Ed and Lavonne Frey at Sulphurous Lake, and the public for its terrific support.

Steve Colbert’s 1 lb. 2 oz. kokanee brought him the prize for the first fish caught at the Deka and Sulphurous/Hathaway lakes annual August fishing derby. and Cassidy Frechette, 8, of Penticton took third prize for her 2 1b. 2 oz. rainbow trout. Steve Colbert’s 1 lb. 2 oz. kokanee was the first fish caught. The prize for youngest fisher present went to 22-day-old Shakoda Grotke, daughter of Todd and Meaka Grotke, and granddaughter of Bob and Pat Grotke. The oldest fisherperson present was Emil Parker but, since he had already won a fish prize, the prize for oldest went to his wife, 84-year-old Bernice Parker. Children enjoyed
the afternoon by running through the sprinkler, having their faces painted by Sherry Cha, Gerry Mailhot and Penny Szach, and eating melons galore. Deka Lake & District Ratepayers’ Association (DLDRA) did their usual magnificent job of catering breakfasts both days and supper on the Sunday. Given DLDRA’s shortage of directors, a vote of thanks must go to the many members and community volunteers who stepped in to help. The Sulphurous Lake District
Volunteer Firefighters’ Association’s Aug. 5 derby at Hathaway and Sulphurous lakes garnered slightly less than 500 tickets. Eighteen fish were caught, including a two-pound burbot caught by Mike Smith. Five rainbows were caught: John Vernon, 2 lb. l3 oz.; Ardele Stockton, 2 lb. 2 oz.; Brian Pituskin and Mason Galon, l lb. 9 oz. each; and John

The Psalm 23 Million Dollar Charity Hole-In-One Contest, Aug. 10-19 at the 108 Golf Resort, is nearing its end but there’s still time to qualify for a chance to win some big cash and great prizes. Until Aug. 18, on each day of the contest, the top 7 golfers shooting closest to the pin and three random draws are entered into the quarter-final slated for Aug. 19. They will each be given three shots on hole No.10 for a hole-in-one prize of up to $10,000 and the chance to qualify as one of the top 10 golfers who will move on to semifinals that same day. In the semi, each qualified golfer gets one shot to sink a hole-in-one on hole No. 10 at a distance of approximately 160 yards and if successful, could win up to $100,000. The top 3 closest to the pin from that round advance to the $1,000,000 final where they will each get one shot from approximately 170 yards. Psalm 23 executive director Marvin Declare says there have been a couple of hole-in-ones sunk during the quarterfinal qualifiers and during last year ’s qualifiers, there were about six. “It’s an act of chance and regardless of levels of talent, golfers are making a difference for people.” Proceeds from the contest go to Psalm

Golfers invited to scramble for literacy by Diana Badke Come join the fun at the Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy annual golf tournament on Saturday, Aug. 18 at Marmot Ridge. It looks like it will be a beautiful day so slap on some sunscreen and join us for a fun filled day! Many dedicated volunteers have been working hard to make sure that this year’s scramble for literacy tournament is a great success. Remember that whether you decide to play a round of golf, sponsor a hole in one, bid on the silent auction or contribute in any way you will be supporting literacy programs in our community. The day will start off with registrations at 11 a.m. We will have a shot-gun start at noon. Both Central GM and Ford have sponsored a $10,000 dollar hole-in-one prize. After the golf game we will head up to the Legion for some refreshments and our annual scramble game. Make sure your team collects 16 scrabble tiles at four holes during the golf game. You will have a chance to win a prize if your team can spell the winning word. After the scrabble game we will have a delicious steak dinner that Mel Torgerson and Ken Mills will be barbecuing on the deck. While we are finishing up dinner we will have the highlight of our event! A local young woman will be recognized for her significant progress made over the last few years. Keep the change for Women's Centre shelter program Monika Paterson Free Press
The 100 Mile House & District Women’s Centre Society’s shelter program will be the recipient of $700.55. Many generous people made for a busy and very successful garage sale fundraiser put on by Royal LePage 100 Mile Realty in front of its office during the Aug. 10 South Cariboo Farmers’ Market. Realtor and fundraiser co-ordinator Ron Kelly says a lot of people were not accepting their change.
“One lady bought something worth $10 and gave me $20, and when I tried to give her the change, she said ‘no, no, it’s for charity’.” The biggest example of the generosity was a man who overpaid significantly, he adds. “Two men saw a Humminbird fish finder, and asked the young lady who brought it in how much she thought it was worth. She said ‘how about $20?’ The first man walked away, and the other said ‘that’s not enough, here’s $50’. “It makes you feel good.”

CrimeStoppers and Sunrise FORD are pleased to announce another HUGE opportunity for the community. DRIVE ONE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY is an amazing NON-fundraiser FUNDRAISER brought to you exclusively by Sunrise FORD and CrimeStoppers! FORD pays you to drive a car, truck or SUV for 5 minutes and you donate all “earnings” to CrimeStoppers. That is correct! A fundraiser that does NOT cost you any funds! How easy can that be? This event will give us up to $6000 if YOU show up to test drive a new market-changing FORD vehicle. NO ONE WILL SELL YOU and NO ONE WILL CALL YOU LATER. This is about getting money for CrimeStoppers and we need your help as one of the 300 drivers that will help earn the $20 for each 5 minute test drive necessary to earn the total available $6000 that FORD of Canada and Sunrise FORD are trying to give away! ON SEPT. 8TH show up between 9:30am to 4:30pm at the SAVE-ON-FOODS parking lot and give us the few minutes it takes to make this great community fundraiser successful.

BUY A GARAGE SALE PACKAGE AT THE 100 MILE FREE PRESS AND WE’LL HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT SALE! 10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this!
