Minister hints at lower Port Mann toll
Toddler dies in nine-storey plunge Two-and-a-halfyear-old girl falls from Whalley apartment balcony

by Tom Fletcher AS THE Port Mann bridge replacement nears completion,
Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom says he is “optimistic” that the toll can be lowered below $3 per crossing, at least for the first year. Lekstrom said in an interview this week that his discussions with the corporation set up to build the 10-lane bridge indicate it may be possible to reduce the toll rate by extending the debt repayment period. When the project was announced, a $3 toll was calculated to pay the bridge off over 40 years. Lekstrom said he has heard from many people who consider that toll too high, especially since the bridge will function with only eight lanes for the first year. The old bridge must be taken down before the last two lanes can be connected to Highway 1. Blair Lekstrom So would a toonie get you across during the first year? Lekstrom wouldn’t give specific number until the entire tolling framework is released, which is expected to be in early September. There will be a second round of ministry advertising at that time, to explain the rates and payment options that will take effect when the bridge opens in December.

death Thursday night after falling from the balcony of a ninth-floor apartment. Surrey RCMP received multiple 911 calls about 8 p.m. Aug. 16 when the girl fell, one from a woman who thought she saw someone jump or fall from the ninth floor of an apartment building at 13353 108 Ave. The little girl apparently left the room where she was watching TV, climbed on a chair on the balcony, and fell over the railing. Her mother, stepfather and brother were in a different room at the time. Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger called the incident “tragic” and noted with the hot weather, more people are keeping their Drew Grainger windows and patio doors open. “These (things) are completely preventable and they’re predictable,” said Grainger. “We see it every time this time of year, where children fall from heights,

The month began with cowboys and buckaroos ready to see their favourite toys come alive in Toy Story 3, with Little Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog being featured the following week in the always popular musical-comedy, The Muppets. Well before darkness began to descend, crowds of movie buffs laid out their blankets and savoured warm summer evening picnics. The early birds enjoyed the popular band, Drift Away, with parents singing along to their favourite tunes from the 70s and 80s.

Dean Atwal from JoyTV captured memorable moments from the second week’s events, including the trivia contest. Propera’s Bryan McIntosh challenged children with skill-testing questions and watched as their grins grew when they were rewarded with prizes. The excitement escalated as the prize draw approached, with everyone hoping to win one of the many prizes donated by local businesses. The eastern portion of the South Fraser Perimeter Road will open at the same time, giving drivers a faster route to the Pattullo Bridge as an alternative to the toll bridge. Lekstrom said he expects some people to try that, but soon recognize the time saving of the new Port Mann. “To divert from the Port Mann to the Pattullo and then get back onto your way, I think people might do it once or twice to say look, I’m opposed to tolling,” Lekstrom said. “But I couldn’t imagine going through that frustration to save a couple of dollars.” Lekstrom said he’s also confident that the promised rapid bus service will be in place from day one. Director of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. “Lower Mainland drivers already pay more than a billion dollars a year in gas taxes,” Bateman said. “We deserve to know that money is flowing into roads and bridges before we get dinged for tolls.” Lekstrom said he is also prepared for people to claim that a one-year discount on tolls is designed to ease the backlash against his unpopular government going into an election year. Critics say the same thing about paving highways and building schools and hospitals, he said.

Donor replaces disabled man’s stolen bike A DISABLED man is once again
able to meet friends and get to the gym, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. Last week, The Surrey-North Delta Leader first reported the story of Brayden Walterhouse, a deaf man with cerebral palsy who had his specialized electric bike stolen from outside the Guildford Recreation Centre on Aug. 14. The 20-year-old was distraught by the loss. “It was required to (me) due to my cerebral palsy,” Walterhouse said in text message interview with The Leader Thursday. “And also, I can’t afford to buy a new one. It was $1,000.” The reaction from the community was swift and generous. Calls came in from Burnaby offering Walterhouse a brand new electric bike, and several

We appreciate it so much as it would have been really difficult for Brayden financially to replace the bike himself.” An anonymous donor told his family to go to VELOcity Cycles in Langley to select a new bike. The donor would cover the cost. ICBC mishandled
T
he B.C. Liberals have completely mishandled ICBC, and the proof came last week, when a review showed that the company has been hiring boatloads of senior managers and paying them more each year – with the government apparently oblivious to this fact. There are 32 per cent more managers than in 2007, and they are paid (as a group) 70 per cent more than managers received in 2007. Fifty-four of them made in excess of $200,000 each in 2011. The Liberals, on taking office in 2001, insisted that ICBC didn’t need to be privatized, nor did there need to be complete competition in the auto insurance sector. They merged ICBC operations with the motor vehicle branch, and had ICBC contribute to policing initiatives, and thus thoroughly muddled it with legitimate government activities. This has made it very difficult to unwind ICBC, the insurance company, from ICBC, the public policy arm. The Liberals have also insisted, especially in recent years, that substantial dividends from ICBC go back to the shareholder – the government. This means all ICBC customers, and that’s everyone who owns a vehicle, are paying additional insurance premiums to boost government revenues. This is not a commercial transaction – it’s a tax grab. The government has now, very belatedly, said ICBC needs to cut its management costs and manager compensation. This comes just after ICBC has boosted insurance rates by 11.2 per cent. The simple fact is this: ICBC is being used by government for all sorts of purposes that are far afield from its ostensible role as a public car insurance company. This isn’t new – the NDP did this with ICBC back in its earliest days. But it certainly points out that the Liberals are just as good as the NDP at mismanaging Crown corporations and sticking taxpayers with extra costs. ICBC needs to be privatized. This of course won’t happen under a new NDP government, nor under a re-elected Liberal government. ICBC is a sacred cow. ICBC has been mismanaged by both the NDP and the Liberals. It should be sold off, but that won’t happen any time soon. Drivers will just keep paying more than they should for car insurance. – Black Press

he B.C. government’s emergency committee on timber supply has produced its report, but it leaves many of the big questions unanswered. Can the Burns Lake sawmill, destroyed by fire last winter, be given enough timber to rebuild? It’s likely, committee members concluded, if areas that are currently considered “marginally economic” are harvested. With nearly half the pine in that region dead from beetle infestation, and much of the better timber already cut, that means harvesting areas that would produce only about two thirds of the volume that is currently considered economical to log. Will eight more sawmills have to close once the beetle-killed timber becomes too degraded to cut in the next few years? Committee members hold out hope that extending the cut to less economic timber stands can reduce this impact as well. But with the current cut far above historical levels to maximize beetle-kill harvest, some industry contraction seems inevitable. All this depends on adequate forest inven-

a crisis that will take more spending in the future, and he will have a hard time finding it as Finance Minister Kevin Falcon looks to balance the books for the 2013 election. If nothing else, the pine beetle epidemic has forced the B.C. government to consider some of the intensive forest management that we hear about in Scandinavia, one of those places that supplies B.C. with wood furniture. And it has prompted renewed interest in offering new forest tenures to aboriginal communities with unresolved resource claims. Under current law, the government can only direct award new forest tenures to aboriginal communities. So part of the committee’s proposed solution is to “expedite negotiations” with the Burns Lake First Nations to give them a chance to harvest some of the marginally economic forest areas that remain. Take a sober second look at alcohol ads Goodbye
IT HAS come to my attention that SkyTrain is now carrying large advertisements for alcohol. What does this tell the youth that are riding the SkyTrain daily to school (my 17-year-old daughter is one of them)? We are being charged a considerable sum in taxes and fares to use public transit and I believe the public should be treated in a fair and responsible manner in return. Promoting alcohol usage to our youth does not seem socially responsible
and is in direct conflict with what society should be trying to discourage. Can we please get our government on board and stop sending conflicting messages that work against those of us that are trying to be responsible parents? So many times I have been on the SkyTrain and had to deal with public drunkenness and people obviously high on drugs. How many times my daughter has had to deal with the same makes me feel
very uncomfortable. I’m sure this is a real problem for TransLink and costs a lot of money for security. So why does TransLink then promote drinking on those very same SkyTrains? I know there are many more people that feel the same way (I’ve talked to a lot). I am just one of the few that take the time to write an email. Lisa Ebenal
Probing pros and cons of online voting
FOR SOME time now, we’ve been hearing from many British Columbians around the province, as well as from interested municipalities, that they want to know more about Internet voting. As a society, we’ve grown increasingly comfortable with the Internet as a tool. In fact, 93 per cent of British Columbians now have access to high-speed Internet, making us one of the most connected jurisdictions in the world. Many of us have grown accustomed to the convenience the Internet offers and we often rely on it for functions like online banking, shopping and booking travel plans. This shows the potential Internet voting has to increase accessibility and convenience and reinvigorate democracy in British Columbia. However, when it comes to something as integral to our democracy as our electoral process, it is imperative that the appropriate precautions are taken. That’s why I, as Attorney General, have requested that Elections BC convene an independent panel to examine the potential for Internet voting here in B.C. This is the first step in exploring whether or not Internet voting is a feasible option for our province. Specifically, Elections BC has been asked to look at best practices when it comes to Internet voting in other jurisdictions – both in Canada and around the globe. The panel will look at Internet voting in both local

and provincial contexts, as certain factors may be unique to each level of government. Most importantly, the panel will be examining all potential security and privacy concerns and how those may be addressed before we would even consider implementation. B.C.’s chief electoral officer Keith Archer will chair the panel, which will have members with expertise in
B.C.’s job plan is clearly working
IT SHOULD be obvious to practically everyone that, statistically speaking, one month’s job stats taken in isolation do not make for a trend. In order to spot a trend, one has to look at year-over-year stats. And when I look at the year-over-year job stats for B.C. I see 36,500 full-time positions gained in B.C. since September 2011. These full-time positions replaced 27,800 part-time positions over the same period. If one goes back a bit further to February of last year, more than 78,800 full-time positions have been gained in B.C. replacing 32,000 part-time positions. The job trend BC is therefore very obvious: Full-time positions are replacing part-time positions in significant numbers. in India.” This was the response of one man on CKNW to the Wisconsin Sikh killings. This is really irrelevant. Integration and assimilation happens gradually from one generation to the next. The majority of Sikhs do not even wear turbans or have beards but it is their right in this great country to do so if they wish. The state cannot start telling people how to dress and look. Most Canadian Sikhs integrate well and are good Canadian citizens. Just like there are orthodox/baptized Jewish, Muslim, or Christian people,
there are some Sikhs that wear turbans and have beards. What good would it be if all Canadians looked and dressed the same and walked around looking like a bunch of clones of each other? Diversity is an essential part of nature and a part of culture. We have seen what the Nazis tried to do with their ideals. They killed the Jews, gypsies, the disabled, gays, and everyone else who did not fit in. The silent majority has to be constantly vigilant to ensure we do not repeat the mistakes of history. Dog paddle to Vancouver Island RE: “SOME parks now off-limits for
dogs,” The Leader, Aug. 16. Sounds fair to me: punishing the many for the irresponsibility of the few. Hey dog people – Victoria is incredibly dog friendly, with progressive policies for sharing parks (time of day usage; waste bags provided) and most importantly, a friendly attitude in general towards dogs and their people. Check it out. Thanks for the reminder of one reason I recently left Surrey. R. Benoit Victoria
Surrey, so long
THREE YEARS ago we moved to a
new home in Fleetwood and were excited about the location with a view and the house, which was beautifully finished and reasonably priced for the Lower Mainland. The location seemed ideal: A quiet street adjacent to a cul-de-sac and near an elementary school. But three years later we were anxious to leave and recently sold to head back north of the Fraser. People have asked us why; the answer is straightforward. Surrey ignores its bylaws and the neighbourhood has been allowed to evolve into an industrial zone, a multi-family community of suites, and an RV parking lot. A walk down our street is like a tour through an RV sales lot as various moving homes of lengths well in excess of 20 feet fill many of the driveways and push out into the public space. The suites double the traffic and fill the streets with extra parked cars. And home-based businesses are flourishing unimpeded. Within sight of the anticipated serenity of our back deck we have maintenance business vehicles, landscaping service vehicles, and an automobile repair business (the later usually parking a tow truck with attached vehicle nearby on the street). Plus there is the in-home beauty service, a daycare business, and a tutoring business all within 500 feet of our home. What happened to the quiet residential neighbourhood we thought we were joining? We have tried the route of raising the issue with bylaw enforcement. The only aspect they were interested in acting on were the unauthorized suites to ensure that the suite fees were being collected. As for the industrial and other businesses – nothing could be done so long as the business vehicles that are parked on the street were moved at least every 72 hours. And I won’t even go into the noise bylaws that are flouted by power washing, leaf blowing, and mowing well past the designated hours, let alone the low-flying helicopters and late-night jets. Well, we have had it. When we told friends we were first moving to Surrey, eyebrows were raised. We now understand why. Surrey justifiably deserves its reputation and in our view is a place to avoid. We blame city hall and the soft bylaws and enforcement. Goodbye Surrey!

Dallas Smith and Lauren Sewell were killed in a plane crash near Kelowna last Monday.
2 dead in plane crash 2 survivors still in hospital by Dan Ferguson
A SECOND fatality in last week’s plane crash near Kelowna has been identified as 24-year-old Lauren Patricia Sewell, a Vancouver resident originally from South Surrey. B.C.’s chief coroner said Sewell died in hospital the day after a four-seat Piper Twin Commanche crashed 30 kilometres west of Kelowna on Monday afternoon. She was the girlfriend of 30-year-old Jayson Dallas Wesley Smith, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith was a Vancouver resident who grew up in the White Rock area. Two survivors of the crash reportedly remain in hospitals in Kamloops and Vancouver in critical condition. Their identities have not yet been released. According to an employee of the company listed as a registered owner of the airplane, Maplewood Landscaping in Delta, one of the survivors is a family member of one of the business owners. In her Thursday statement, chief coroner Lisa Lapointe said that with the consent of her family, Sewell became an organ donor. “The BC Coroners Service commends the family for the generosity of their decision in a time of immense grief,” Lapointe said. Friends of Smith and Sewell said the two became a couple after Smith returned from a nearly year-long trip around the world in 2011. Alexis Bennett, a long-time friend of Smith, described Sewell a “super-nice girl.” “She was a good fit for Dallas because she was so calm and centered.” When Smith turned 30 on June 30, Sewell bought him flying lessons as a birthday present. It isn’t clear whether the flight they were on was part of the package she purchased. Sewell attended Elgin Park Secondary school in South Surrey, while Smith went to Semiahmoo Secondary. The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria was first notified that the flight had gone down around 3 p.m. when an emergency beacon was triggered by the impact. The pilot had not placed a distress call. The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.

$13B oil refinery proposed for Kitimat Black Press owner David Black wants to build ‘world scale’ facility to reduce tanker spill risk
by Tom Fletcher
DAVID BLACK, chairman
and owner of Black Press, announced Friday he wants to build a world scale oil refinery at Kitimat, B.C. Black told a news conference in Vancouver Friday he is submitting an environmental assessment application to build a “world scale” oil refinery on behalf of Kitimat Clean Ltd., a company owned by Black. The application to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office is expected this fall. The proposed refinery would be big enough to process all the diluted bitumen carried by Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. Black said he has had extensive discussions with Enbridge and other players in the Canadian oil industry, but none has so far offered to back the project. Black said he will use his own money to finance the proposal through environmental assessment, which he expects to cost several million dollars. After that, he said investors would be needed to complete it, assuming both the refinery and the pipeline receive approval. He has had preliminary meetings with Kitimat and Terrace councils, as well as the Haisla and Kitselas First Nations in the region. The proposed site is a 3,000-hectare Crown industrial property between Terrace and Kitimat. Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan spoke by phone to the news conference, offering encouragement for the proposal. But Black acknowledged he does not yet have formal support from communities or investors. “I see myself as a catalyst to make this happen,” said Black, who first proposed the idea to the province and the industry seven years ago when he was chairman of the B.C. Progress Board. Black is working with Glenn McGinnis, a consulting engineer and former manager of the Ioco oil refinery in Port Moody. “We want it [the Kitimat refinery] to be the cleanest and greenest upgrading and refining site in the world,”
“I see myself as a catalyst to make this happen.” David Black McGinnis said. The refinery would produce 240,000 barrels per day of diesel, 100,000 barrels per day of gasoline and 50,000 barrels per day of kerosene or aviation fuel,
refined from heavy oil. Among those attending the news conference was Art Sterritt, executive director of the Coastal First Nations, a group in the Kitimat area that has strongly opposed the pipeline proposal. Sterritt disputed Black’s assertion that a B.C. refinery “solves half of the problem” with exported oil by shipping refined gasoline, jet fuel and diesel in tankers instead of heavy crude. Those products have their own risks, Sterritt said. Black pointed out that without marine shipments of those fuels, the remote coastal communities Sterritt represents would not be able to function. The lighter fuel products are still an environmental hazard, but they dissipate much more quickly and do not persist for many years like spilled heavy crude,
he said. NDP energy critic John Horgan was also skeptical. “At this point, it’s a proposal without business partners and without First Nations and local community support,” Horgan said. “It doesn’t change our position [opposing] the Enbridge Northern Gateway project.” Black said the refinery will mean nearly 6,000 construction jobs over a five-year period, 3,000 permanent jobs at the refinery and tax revenue for various levels of government. Meantime, a politician in Northern B.C. reacted with skepticism, calling Black’s refinery plan “ridiculous.” Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen says he would “be very, very surprised” to see plans by Black to construct an oil refinery in the
Kitimat-Terrace area come to fruition. “It’s another chapter in a story that is increasingly becoming more
and more ridiculous. This wasn’t in Enbridge’s plans, it’s not in China’s plans, it’s not in the Prime Minister’s plans
so I don’t know where it came from,” Cullen said. For more information, visit kitimatclean. ca

SURREY’S STREET TREES
Trees are thirsty too! Summer is here; the weather is warm; and the trees on your street and in your yard need water. Like us, trees need long refreshing drinks of water to stay healthy. Here’s what you can do to help your neighbourhood street trees and the trees in your yard this summer: 1. Water the trees twice a week. 2. Water thoroughly at the base of the trees for 15 minutes. 3. Water during the cooler parts of the day (early morning and dusk) and when it isn’t raining. 4. Water slowly so that the water has time to soak into the dry soil and reach the roots, instead of pooling on the surface. For more information about street trees, please call 604.501.5050 For more information about private trees, please call 604.591.4675

Traffic ranking is deceptive, says TransLink Metro rated worst after Los Angeles by Jeff Nagel METRO VANCOUVER is
Canada’s most congested urban area and second only to Los Angeles in North America, according to a report. The rankings by GPS maker TomTom – based on data gleaned from the traffic movements of its subscribers – found Vancouver drivers take on average 30 per cent longer to make a trip at congested times than when roads and highways are free flowing. Los Angeles was worst among North American cities – with a 33 per cent delay – while Miami, Seattle, Tampa and San Francisco ranked third through sixth at around 25 per cent. Toronto was ninth at 22 per cent. For Vancouver, TomTom estimated congestion translates into a 34-minute delay for each hour driven in peak periods, adding up to 83 hours over the course of a year for motorists with a 30-minute daily commute. But TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said the findings are deceptive. Metro Vancouver has fewer highways and therefore lower overall traffic speeds than Los Angeles, he said. That means a 10 km/h reduction in the speed of moving traffic is a bigger proportional delay here compared to U.S. cities
with more freeways, giving Vancouver a worse ranking. “We made the choice not to punch freeways through the centre of Vancouver and that’s made the region more livable,” Snider said. He said TransLink is working to expand transit – as well as cycling and pedestrian infrastructure – to offer alternatives to car use in more of the region. SFU City Program director Gordon Price said the rankings more accurately reflect the plight of drivers in areas where cars dominate, but not where transit is frequent and more viable. “Car congestion is not a measure of mobility,” he said. “So long as you have choices, you don’t have to be hung out in traffic.” Price said the region will soon see what a huge increase in highway capacity achieves when the new Port Mann
Bridge, expanded Highway 1 and South Fraser Perimeter Road all open. Highway congestion should be cut, at least initially, he said, although he forecasts it will spur more car use and new construction geared for drivers rather than transit, potentially undermining efforts to expand transit South of the Fraser. He also predicts the tolls on the Port Mann will increase congestion on arteries within Surrey as some drivers seek to avoid paying and more South of Fraser drivers try to stay on their side of the river. Price said the City of Vancouver’s decision to shun freeways has paid off because large numbers of car trips have shifted to transit, walking or cycling. “We’re down to 1965 levels of traffic coming in and out of downtown Vancouver.”

August Celebration! 2 for 1 es i h t o o Sm Y SIZE!
AT CENTRAL CITY
Summer is a good time to explore our cool forests
bythe bay
BRITISH Columbia has
long been renowned for the quality and size of its trees, and the Lower Mainland once had some of the greatest. The tallest conifer ever measured by a BC forester was a 1,100 year old Douglas-fir felled in 1881 near Hall’s Prairie. Its fallen trunk was 109.1 metres long and the stump was 3.5 metres across. Although the early days of logging soon cleared most of the upland forests, an old growth stump at Surrey Centre, measured in 1947, was three metres in diametre. Forests grow quickly in our moist, coastal climate, and even as second growth, the remaining cedars, hemlocks and Douglas firs are magnificent trees, enormously tall by global standards. They will need to be allowed to grow for a few hundred years more to approach the maturity and richness of the forest they replaced. Some beautiful trees can still be found locally, although many are still cut down to make way for developments. Summer is a good time to explore our cool, dark forests, and thanks to the efforts of early conservationists, many local parks have magnificent trees, including Elgin, Tynehead, Redwood, and Green Timbers
with the work of the Green Timbers Heritage Society. Besides native conifers, Surrey has a rich selection of heritage trees from around the world. A heritage tree can be defined as one that is old, large and/ or has important cultural significance. Redwood Park has the largest stand of Giant Sequoias north of the international border, as well as English Walnut, Sweet Chestnut, English Oak, Golden Elm and other unusual trees planted by the Brown Brothers from 1893 onwards. Darts Hill Garden is a designated Heritage Tree Site with fine specimens of many interesting trees, including Ant-
Anne Murray Park and Urban Forest. Efforts were made to protect Green Timbers as early as 1860, yet despite the fame of its giant trees and their attraction to tourists, the last virgin stand of timber was felled by 1930. How short-sighted that was. The park was replanted with native conifers and the work of restoration continues today
arctic Beech, Bigleaf Magnolia and White Mulberry. It is open to group tours, by arrangement. A great source of information on local heritage trees is “Our Sylvan Heritage ~ A Guide to the Magnificent Trees of the South Fraser”, by Susan Murray (no relation). Susan is a third generation horticulturist and founder of the Fraser Valley Heritage Tree Society.

White Rock tops Surrey in national championship game
Renegades stop Storm
by Rick Kupchuk
A YEAR after winning a national championship in the under-16 category, the White Rock Renegades ’95 have become Canada’s best softball team in the under-18 age group. The Renegades won an all-B.C. final at the Under-18 Women’s Fastpitch Canadian Championship in Montreal Sunday afternoon, defeating the Surrey Storm 2-0. White Rock pitcher Jocelyn Cater, a member of Canada’s national team, threw a two-hitter against the Storm, striking out six batters and walking seven. While the Renegades won the provincial championship last month in Victoria, it was the Surrey Storm looking as though it was B.C.’s best bet for the national title for much of the week in Montreal. The Storm, third place finishers in Victoria three weeks ago behind the Renegades and Victoria Devils, won its first seven round robin games before falling 1-0 to the Guelph Gators to earn the No. 2 seed for the double-knockout playoff. The Renegades ’95, meanwhile, lost their first game of the weeklong tournament and were just 3-2 (won-loss) midway through the round robin before winning three straight games to finish at 6-2 and in third place. White Rock proved the superior team in the playoff. They defeated the Storm 2-1 in a first-round game Friday night, with Cater throwing a complete-game two-hitter that included 12 strikeouts and just two walks. Even with Cater all but shutting down the Storm, White Rock needed a two-out, bases-loaded single by Cheyanne Head to score Sydney Brown for the win. Sara Groenewegen pitched Saturday night in a 3-1 win over Guelph, one of just two teams to defeat the Renegades in round robin play. Groenewegen had 10 strikeouts,

The Storm placed second, losing to the White Rock Renegades ‘95 in the championship game. limiting the Gators to three singles, five walks and an unearned run. She was also the top performer at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring the third on a pair of singles.
After their loss Friday night, the Storm took the long way back to Sunday’s final, winning twice Saturday and one more Sunday just two hours before the championship game.
They began with a 3-2 over the Brantford Bobcats. Dallas Tilley scored the winning run in the sixth inning, hitting a triple then going home when the Bobcats shortstop mishandled a ball hit by Alisha Welch. Surrey then stopped Victoria 4-0 Saturday night, with Lindsey Ogilvie going two-for-three at the plate with a triple, a run batted in (RBI) and two runs scored. Tori Belton threw a completegame shutout in a 1-0 win over Guelph Sunday morning. The Storm scored the only run of the game in the top of the seventh inning, on a single by Kylie Reubens which scored Chelsea Jenner from third base. But the win streak would stop at three games. The Renegades got the first run of the final in their first at-bat, after Brianna Loewen singled and moved to third on an error by a Storm outfielder. Two batters later, she scored on a base-hit from Sara Groenewegen. Sara Mason singled to score Sydney Brown in the fourth inning for a 2-0 White Rock lead. Down to their last out in the seventh inning, Surrey loaded the bases when Janessa Neufeld and Anna Battison drew walks, and Kendra Goodman singled. But Cater got the final out on a strikeout. FOUL TIPS: Cater won the tournament’s Best Pitcher award for her play in the round robin, posting a 0.28 earned run average Catcher Sara Mason, also of the Renegades ’95, was the all-star team catcher. All-stars from the Surrey Storm included Lindsey Ogilvie at first base, Alisha Welch at shortstop, and Chelsea Jenner in the outfield. The White Rock Renegades ’94 went 5-3 in round robin play to place sixth, and were eliminated 4-3 by the Brantford Bobcats in their first playoff game.

Preseason underway for Eagles by Black Press THE SURREY Eagles are back the
ice next week at the South Surrey Arena. Training camp began yesterday (Monday), the first of four days of twice-daily practices for prospective and returning players. The B.C. Hockey League team, which advanced to the Coastal Conference finals last year before being ousted by the Powell River Kings, will also scrimmage each evening until the camp closes Wednesday. Surrey will play its first preseason game Friday, Aug. 24 when they host the Langley Rivermen at South Surrey Arena. Puck drops at 7 p.m. The following day, the two teams will play a rematch at the Langley Sportsplex, also at 7 p.m. The Eagles will also play four more exhibition games, two each against the Coquitlam Express and Chilliwack Chiefs, before the regular season begins in September. Prior to camp opening, the Eagles dealt one of its top forwards back east, in exchange for a defenceman. On Thursday, the BC Hockey League club announced it had sent Sean McGovern, 18, and future considerations to the North York Rangers of the Ontario Provincial Jr. A Hockey League (OPJHL) in a swap for 18-year-old Brett Seldon. McGovern, an Ontario native, had 39 points in 59 games with Surrey last season, his first in the BCHL. Seldon, a six-foot-two, 200pound blue-liner from Thornhill, Ont., tallied one goal and 11 points in 43 games last season in the OPJHL. “We’re excited to add Brett to the roster,” said Eagles head coach and general manager Matt Erhart. “He’ll provide some more veteran leadership and size to our back end, and we’re thrilled to have him for the upcoming season.”

Olympic lifter thought she missed a medal by Nick Greenizan
WHEN CHRISTINE Girard was lifting for a chance at a silver medal, she thought she was lifting for bronze. So when she failed in her final clean-and-jerk attempt – in her mind, knocking her just off the podium for the second straight Summer Olympics – only to be told, moments later, that her performance was still good enough for a medal, she did something she hadn’t expected to do. She started to cry. “I was in a such a bubble when I was competing. Everyone else knew I had the bronze, but I didn’t,” she said Tuesday, a day after returning to White Rock with her husband, Walter Bailey. “When I missed, and thought I was fourth, for a few seconds I was destroyed, I was so sad. But that change from disappointment to ‘Oh my God, I did it’ was amazing. “I didn’t know how I would react. I just burst into tears, I was so happy.”
Girard’s bronze in the 63-kg division – Canada’s first-ever Olympic women’s weightlifting medal – came after she lifted 103 kg in the snatch, followed by 133 kg in the clean-and-jerk. Her score in the clean-and-jerk beat fourth-place finisher Sibel Simsek of Turkey by three kg. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Girard finished fourth, losing bronze by the same threekg difference. She insists, though, that her new Olympic medal is not necessarily vindication for four years ago, but instead the culmination of nearly two decades of hard work. “It’s not just the last four years, but really, I feel like I’ve reached a new level now. I’ve been doing this for 17 years, and finally I have my medal. It means a lot,” Girard said. The 27-year-old Quebec native, who has lived on the Peninsula for four years, left Wednesday for her home province, where she plans on spending the next 10 days visiting her family. And as has been the case since
she won her medal July 31, she expects to field many requests to show it off during her stay. “For now, I bring it almost everywhere with me because everyone wants to see it. I don’t know what I’ll do with it once people get bored of it,” she laughed. Girard admits she was surprised at the reception she and other B.C. Olympians – including South Surrey swimmer Richard Weinberger and members of the national women’s soccer team – received when they arrived at Vancouver International Airport Monday. Hundreds of fans showed up – many decked out in red and carrying Canadian flags – to pay tribute to the country’s local heroes. “It was really neat, but unexpected. I didn’t think it would be that much,” said Girard. “What was best was seeing all the kids there, and being able to chat with them and see their eyes shine because they were able to touch an Olympic medal.”

cancer the boot. More specifically, the former football player is hoping to kick 100,000 yards in field goals – 2,858 field goals of 35 yards apiece – in 48 hours in his quest to raise $100,000. The money would be used to help families take care of their loved one who are battling cancer. “I know first hand just how hard it is,” said Collins. Collins’ father Ron was diagnosed in August 2008 with lung cancer, despite never smoking a day in his life. Eight months later, he passed away. “He was my biggest supporter, my biggest fan,” Collins said about his father. “He was my sounding board, my guy I would go to for advice whether it was life or sport, he was the guy who would sit down with me . . . and taught me there are more things than sport and being super wealthy. “It was about helping people.”
