David Black changes Northern Gateway debate Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier Black Press Media Group owner and chair David Black announced plans to construct a $13 billion oil refinery near Kitimat, B.C.. The announcement is debatechanging for the proposed Northern Gateway Project Black Press Photo because it directly impacts the environ- Media mogul David Black mental impacts of announces plans to build a offshore tankers and refinery in Kitimat, B.C. greatly increases the profit share to B.C. and Canada as a whole from the tar sands resource. Black’s proposal for the “greenest and cleanest” refinery would potentially create 6,000 direct jobs during construction of the project and 3,000 direct jobs during operation of the refinery. Black said his motivation for the proposal has to do with the next generation, and creating jobs for the future, for young workers and to replace jobs being lost in the contracting forest industry. “I think this is the right thing to do for the province, I think it’s nation-building,” said Black. While the generation previous to his left a legacy of opportunity and good jobs for his generation, Black said he was not sure his generation had done the same for the next generation, with huge government deficits, a lack of job opportunities, and depleted fisheries and forest sectors. “It’s time we looked after the next generation a little bit,” he said. But Black was also quick to clarify he does not want to see Northern Gateway go ahead at all costs so his project can move forward. “If we can’t assure ourselves that any leaks would be immaterial … then we shouldn’t proceed,” he said, saying it has been “unnerving” to see the devastation in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where a spill seriously impacted the river. However, he said the motivation for Enbridge to do better is twofold, both ethical and financial.

“Nobody can afford to have another Kalamazoo,” said Black, who has met with Enbridge officials and believes they are sincerely embarrassed by the incidents in Kalamazoo, the leak north of Edmonton and the most recent spill in Wisconsin. “I think we can trust them to do the best job possible,” he said. The refinery he has proposed would be the first high end one in North Amer-
ica in about 35 years and would use technology he thinks could make it the cleanest one for decades to come. The proposal would reduce tanker traffic by one third and maintain lower fuel prices for Canadians instead of having them buy back refined oil from China. The proposal has already been met with stiff criticism, as some economists
doubt the project is feasible, however, Black said he had contracted two independent consultants to establish the economic viability of a refinery in Canada. “The industry doesn’t want to do it because it’s not the most profitable end of their business,” he said, but this doesn’t mean it is not at all profitable. Steve Nevidon, Forestry Supervisor, CANFOR and Kathie LaForge, Community Manager, New Gold Inc. have worked with the Transportation Safety Department at the BCFSC. New Gold is an intermediate gold mining company. The company has a portfolio of four producing assets and two development projects, including the Blackwater Project in British Columbia. Kathie LaForge said, “New Gold has, as one of its corporate responsibility objectives, to ensure the health and

If the signs and Guides are effective the Council hopes to build more partnerships with road users in other areas and erect more kiosks; reaching more tourists and public road users. Currently there are two kiosks (one at Kluskus Forest Service Road, one on the Holy Cross Forest Service Road) and 2 more planned for Kamloops and Adams Lake areas. Our mission is to eliminate all fatalities and serious injuries in the forest sector of British Columbia.

Rick Walters said, “The target audience of this sign and Guide is not typical industrial road users, but instead members of the public - tourists, fishers, backpackers - who might not be familiar with travelling on resource roads. The goal of the Guide is to educate “New Road Users” by explaining what traffic types, road conditions and hazards they should expect to encounter, and by recommending the practical steps they can take to ensure their own safe travels, as well as contribute to safety of other road users. This partnership allows for all of us to share resources when working toward the same result.” BCFSC has formed a partnership with Ca-

Cholesterol and the good and bad types of fat (HDL & LDL) We’ve heard lots about cholesterol and it has a pretty bad rep as a bad guy, but really our body needs cholesterol for things like helping with Vitamin D absorption, however, too much can lead to complications and have health risks. First of all - cholesterol can’t dissolve in the blood, it is carried by lipoproteins throughout the body and there are two main types LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is the ‘bad’ type, and HDL (high density lipoprotein) is the ‘good’ type. LDL –is usually deposited in the bloodstream and often causes problems when it builds up in the arteries, accumulated build up forms plaque (layers upon layers of tiny pieces of cholesterol) which narrows the arteries and makes them less flexible which can put a strain on the pumping action of your cardiovascular system. Lots of plaque can result in the narrowing on blood vessels, plaque can also break apart and larger pieces can then travel through the blood stream and may block smaller vessels or narrowed arteries which can result in a heart attack or stroke. HDL - high levels seem to protect against heart attack as it is thought to carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver where it is passed from the body. Because it does a god job in removing cholesterol it is also thought to remove some of the excess cholesterol which has been deposited by the LDL and in turn the HDL helps to clear out narrowed arteries and lower LDL levels. It’s nearly impossible to avoid LDL so the key health factor is maintaining healthy levels and increasing your HDL. So what else can you do about your levels? Weight- more weight tends to raise cholesterol, managing and losing excess weight can only serve to benefit your body as well your cholesterol levels. Physical activity can help raise HDL and decrease LDL, walking 30 minutes each day can work wonders. Diet- foods high in saturated fat and carbohydrates increases LDL: some foods that can help lower LDL and/or raise HDL: Walnuts, garlic, foods rich in Omega 3 (fish, flax seeds, dark leafy greens). In moderation red wine increases HDL to protect the body from heart disease and artery damage (key word being- moderation) Cholesterol serves a role, but too much can cause problems, lower your LDL to a normal range, increase you’re HDL and your on your way to body & cardiovascular health! BRIEFLY Passing lane for Hwy 27 Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier A new passing lane has been announced for Highway 27. Southbound, near Dog Creek, Highway 27 will be getting a passing lane around 3.8 km long, with work planned to start this fall. Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad said he had a conversation with the Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom earlier this year, but there was no money for his proposals at the time. When it was decided there was some room for additional projects, Rustad was very pleased to learn Lekstrom remembered their conversation and decided to approve the passing lane. “It’s great to be able to see these projects moving forward,” he said. This project is not part of the $14 million in work announced in the spring by the government for the region.

Proposal seen as still a “pipe dream” From front While the question was immediately asked at the press conference why if he is concerned about the next generations he does not invest $13 billion in renewable energy, Black said he would like to see that eventually, but doesn’t think we’re ready to “turn off the tap” just yet. Environmental opponents still say they do not want to see bitumen piped across B.C.’s remote and often pristine wilderness, putting watersheds, wildlife and fisheries jobs at risk. So far, the announcement only marks the beginning of the lengthy environmental assessment process, but this is the first step in any such process and Black said he wanted to present the proposal publicly to help change the discussion. Black said he will be personally funding the environmental assess-
ment of the proposal and will then be looking for financing and working on negotiating with First Nations and other communities as the process continues. The proposed refinery would process up to 550,000 barrels of crude a day, producing 240,000 barrels of diesel fuel, 100,000 of gasoline and 50,000 of kerosene a day. Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan was on the phone during the announcement and said she fully supports the project. “This is a very great day in our history,” she said. “I feel that this project will probably change the face of the northwest.” So far, critics do not seem to be taking the proposal seriously, dismissing the announcement as being unsupported. So far, no agreements are in place with oil companies, En-
bridge, First Nations or potential customers. Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad called the project a “$13 billion pipe dream” but said he would welcome the idea of an oil refinery for Canada to gain more of the economic benefit of the resource. However, he also said there is still a long way to go on dealing with the pipeline and whether or not it will go ahead. “I seem to remember debating the NDP in the legislature this past spring where they were saying we needed to add value to the pipeline products and I challenged each and everyone of them; I said: So which one of you is willing to stand up and support the idea of an oil refinery going into your riding, and they were all silent.” While Rustad said it may satisfy
some people, he does not see the possible refinery eliminating Northern Gateway pipeline opposition. “I suspect for many people living along the pipeline that are concerned about a potential spill, I don’t think anything will really change that particular perspective.” “I have always been pro development but I’m concerned about environmental issues,” he said. But he does think Enbridge is putting together a good project with high standards, and the final decision is a federal one, but he is concerned about the way opposition is influencing the process. “Not just for Enbridge but for any project, if we’re going to start making political decisions rather than base things on science then I think we’re going down a very dangerous road,” he said.

Season of plenty Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier As the summer winds down and the nights cool off, it is easy once again to reflect on just how much we have. As I write this, I am looking out my window at a beautiful Stuart Lake, shining under a cloudless sky, slight breeze to lessen the heat. The hot summer has yielded a fantastic garden in my community garden plot, also handily located on the scenic shores of the lake. I will once again have more carrots, beets and potatoes then I know what to do with. Eating delicious salad from the garden day after day does not seem to get old, as other foods sometimes can. The freshness and variety of vegetables and seemingly endless combinations keep palate boredom in check -not to mention it’s so easy to make a quick salad for one person, no pot required. I have seen the bright white sails of the summer sailing camp dot the horizon for a week this month, and classic cars park to watch the sunset from Cottonwood Park. I was lucky enough to get a large number of days out on the lake itself, fishing, swimming, eating and socializing on the water, earning myself one of the best tans I have sported in years. I even had the chance to enjoy someone’s sailboat when he was generous enough to take myself and a friend out for an afternoon sail. The afternoon and part of an evening disappeared like the keel through the water as we all took pleasure in conversation and some interesting company. I helped coordinate some locals to participate in great rock climb-
ing training on Mt. Pope, on incredible rock faces only minutes from town, a climber’s dream for sure, and one most climbers travel hours or more to partake in. There have been beach parties, sunsets and motorbike rides with friends, and the opening of the amazing new culinary and coffee hot spot, The Soup Wallah. There is so much in this little community of Fort St. James to offer, so many fun things to do right on our doorstep, it’s hard to take advantage of them all. I have not once taken my mountain bike out of the shed this year, instead opting for motorbike and road bike rides. It’s impossible to have time for everything. Yet I made it to a couple of days of Arts Wells, the festival of all things art in my campervan with a friend, a great weekend of music and art always worth the trip. With the summer winding down, there is still so much more exciting stuff to come: Music on the Mountain -our very own music festival in our backyard, the all-terrain Poker Ride, more beach sunsets and harvest pot lucks with friends. It is always sad to see the end of summer, to know the lake will be too cold for all but the bravest of souls soon, but then again, it’s also exciting to think about what is to come. While it is so easy to become caught up in the concerns of the daily grind, the beauty of this community full of great people and opportunities for adventure, also make it refreshingly easy to sit back and just enjoy where you are at. Here’s to hoping you were lucky enough to take some of it in yourself.

Ontario bids farewell Christina Millington Omineca Express Where to begin... Goodbyes were never my thing, especially when having to say goodbye so soon. I have made the decision to move back home to Ontario after long hard consideration that has had me back and forth quite a bit over the past month or so. So much as changed in my life that has left me to reflect and prioritize a few personal matters. Family has grown quite significantly since I left home back in April that has left me feeling disconnected. My family has done an exceptional job with chronicling photos upon photos of my evolving family, which has left me wondering at the end of the day if this chapter in my ever-changing career and personal life is worth missing those precious moments. As I’m sure you have all gathered from previous editorials, I am very close to my family. Having said that, I’m sure you’re wondering why I chose to separate myself from them miles away. I truly believe it takes experiencing life in all its aspects to learn life lessons, and I feel not many people can look back and reflect that they have experienced life as they envisioned when they were a young teen-
ager whom aspired to be a astronaut at some point during that self discovery period - you know who you are! I suppose what I am trying to say is, it’s okay to venture off track once in a while. It’s those misguided steps that encourage us to reach outside of our comfort zone and live life according to you and only you. I must say, for some time now I have lived my life according to a plan that I thought I couldn’t afford to alter. I went to journalism college to become a reporter. I graduated, therefore I was required to find a job in my field and the rest would be history. No one ever prepares you for that “aha moment” when you suddenly realize it may have been one of those “misguided” steps. Thankfully for me, the support that I have had throughout this self discovery process has been an encouraging, yet emotional experience. Encouraging in the sense that we don’t have to live life according to a plan, rather live it to look forward to those moments when you can venture off track and experience the unfamiliar - that’s what life is all about, or so it should be. My time here in Vanderhoof has been an unbelievable adventure. I have met so many wonderful people during my time here that has left me joyful in knowing that I will be taking away many cherished friendships for this experience. Here’s to living life to the fullest and not being afraid to explore the unfamiliar. Heck, it will make for a good story someday.

COMMUNITY
Council in review: Fate of Hobson Museum weighs heavy on council Christina Millington Omineca Express Wayne Deorksen, owner and operator of the Hobson Museum in Vanderhoof spoke before council members on Aug. 8 to bring light to the significance of the historical landmark in the heart of downtown Vanderhoof. “We need to save and keep the Hobson collection together,” said Deorksen.
Deorksen was given the responsibility to bring the history of the Hobson family to the community of Vanderhoof by Cathy Hobson. “It’s an ever-growing collection of old Vanderhoof,” said Deorksen as he laid out his efforts and accomplishments regarding the museum to council members in hopes to gain the necessary support and funding to continue in the years to come with showcasing the fine artifacts that the Hobson family had so

graciously gifted to the community. Mayor Gerry Thiessen expressed his interests to see the museum flourish. “We want to be involved as a community,” he said. Claire Neilsen of Vanderhoof has taken the time to tour the museum, and as a community member she couldn’t be prouder to have such a collection right here in Vanderhoof. “It’s an amazing jewel,” said Neilsen.

The Hooterville Express train kept busy all weekend long with a line-up of kids wanting a thrilling ride.
The outdoor arena was always busy with horse events all weekend.
Showing pigs is always a challenge but this 4-H participant has it handled.
There were horses of every size at the fair and all looking freshly groomed.
These pooches were learning some obedience training. There were lots of dogs at the fair from working dogs at the stock dog demonstrations to the ones that liked to dress up.
Photos by Christina Millington The 2012 Nechako Valley Exhibition brought out many participants and community members to spend a weekend amongst talented young participants, cowboys and cowgirls as the musical talents of local bands echoed throughout the crowded grounds. Ish Da Fish did a terrific job of entertaining the young and the old, everyone sang along and also learnt how to sculpture balloons.

Rediscover Vanderhoof BarterNow.ca BarterNow is a local, Vanderhoof based, online barter network. The idea for BarterNow came when Vanderhoof resident Jutta Schoenhardt needed help with the accounting software she was using for her business. She came across a wonderful woman who taught her how to use the accounting software, and Jutta was thinking of a way to pay her back. That’s when the idea came to her; why couldn’t there be a network where people could trade products and services for other products and services, without the exchange of money. Jutta did some research, and discovered that there are incredibly successful barter networks like this all over North America, including a number of networks in Canada. Seeing how well these communities work, and how much the users beneďŹ t from the service, Jutta decided that Vanderhoof could beneďŹ t from a barter network. BarterNow was started by bartering! Jutta enlisted the help of her talented sons, Pascal and Marcel, to help build the website and do the design work! BarterNow was ofďŹ cially launched in the summer of 2011, and the network is slowly growing, as word spreads about the beneďŹ ts of being part of this community. BarterNow membership is currently available to residents in Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, and Fraser Lake. Members list their goods or services on BartnerNow.ca at market value. Other members within the network can purchase these goods or services with barter dollars, which are transferred to the sellers account for his/her to spend on another good/service. For example, Jutta often sells her “Saddle Bar Lodgeâ€? bread at 7 loaves for 12 barter dollars. Another barter member then buys the bread from Jutta. 12 barter dollars are then transferred from
the user’s account to Jutta’s, which Jutta can then spend on more accounting software lessons! Barter Now is a way for local residents to support their local community. The artisan community, and we are all artists in one way or another, can sell their products without hav-
ing to have a store and large overhead. A business can ďŹ ll slow times with barter, move inventory that is about to expire, or sell off out of season products. Jutta’s vision for this network is a community of like minded people that know and support each other and the local businesses.
Human beings are community people, and we thrive in a community. Plus a great barter transaction is a very satisfying experience. Jutta would love to see every artist in the community, whether they bake, pickle, quilt, or paint, to take advantage of this platform to sell their pieces, or to try new things. Think outside the box, list something you absolutely love to do and see how other people like it. You may just discover your new career this way! There is an annual membership fee of $99+tax per account, which gives the user 100 barter dollars immediately. If you are one of the ďŹ rst 100 members, you can take advantage of the Double Dollar Deal, and receive an extra 100 barter dollars! Now all you need to think about is what you have to offer on the network, because when you barter, you buy smarter! For more information, please contact Jutta at 250-567-3993.

WISE BUYERS READ THE LEGAL COPY: Vehicle(s) may be shown with optional equipment. Dealer may sell or lease for less. Limited time offers. Offers may be cancelled at any time without notice. Dealer order or transfer may be required as inventory may vary by dealer. See your Ford Dealer for complete details or call the Ford Customer Relationship Centre at 1-800-565-3673. ‡Ford Employee Pricing (“Employee Pricing”) is available from June 14, 2012 to August 31, 2012 (the “Program Period”), on the purchase or lease of most new 2012/2013 Ford vehicles (excluding all chassis cab and cutaway body models, F-150 Raptor, Medium Trucks, Mustang Boss 302, and 2013 Shelby GT500). Employee Pricing refers to A-Plan pricing ordinarily available to Ford of Canada employees (excluding any CAW-negotiated programs). The new vehicle must be delivered or factory-ordered during the Program Period from your participating Ford Dealer. This offer can be used in conjunction with most retail consumer offers made available by Ford at either the time of factory order or delivery, but not both. Employee Pricing is not combinable with CPA, GPC, CFIP, Daily Rental Allowance and A/X/Z/D/F-Plan programs. ‡‡No purchase necessary. For full contest rules, eligible vehicle criteria, and to enter as a Ford owner, visit www.ford.ca/shareourpridecontest (follow the entry path applicable to you, complete all mandatory fields and click on ‘submit’) or visit your local Ford Dealer for details. Open only to residents of Canada who have reached the age of majority, possess a valid graduated level provincially issued driver’s license, and are owners of Ford branded vehicles (excluding fleet customers and all Lincoln and Mercury models). Eligible vehicle criteria includes requirement that it be properly registered in Canada in the contest entrant’s name (matching vehicle ownership), and properly registered/plated and insured. Non-Ford owners can enter by mailing an original 100 word essay on “what they like about Ford”, with their full name, full mailing address, email, daytime phone number (with area code) to: Vanessa Richard, Pareto Corp., 1 Concorde Gate, Suite 200, Toronto, ON, M3C 4G4. Contest closes at 11:59pm (PST) on the last day of the 2012 Ford Employee Pricing campaign which will be no earlier than August 31, 2012. Limit of 1 entry per person. Up to 8 prizes available to be won in Canada in 3 possible prize categories, each worth up to CAD$50,000. Chances of winning are dependent on the total number of entries received up to each 10,000 interval of unit sales under the Employee Pricing campaign (“Draw Trigger”). Odds of winning decrease as the contest progresses, more entries are made into the contest, and opportunities for Draw Triggers lessen. Skill testing question required. ▲Offer only valid from August 1, 2012 to August 31, 2012 (the “Program Period”) to Canadian resident customers who own or are currently leasing (during the Program Period) a Ford Ranger, Explorer Sport Trac, or F-150 to F-550 (each a “Qualifying Loyalty Model”), or any competitive pickup truck with a pickup bed (each a “Qualifying Conquest Model”) and purchase, lease, or factory order (during the Program Period) a new 2012/2013 Ford F-150 to F-550 (excluding Raptor) (each an “Eligible Vehicle”). Qualifying customers will receive CAD$1,000 (the “Incentive”) towards the purchase or lease of the Eligible Vehicle, which must be delivered and/or factory-ordered from your participating Ford dealer during the Program Period. Limit one (1) Incentive per Eligible Vehicle sale, up to a maximum of two (2) separate Eligible Vehicle sales, per Qualifying Conquest/Loyalty Model. Each customer will be required to provide proof of ownership/registration of the applicable Qualifying Conquest/Loyalty Model and the ownership/registration address must match the address on the new Buyer’s Agreement or Lease Agreement for the Eligible Vehicle sale. Smith: Douglas Reid January 12, 1927 - July 21, 2012 The family of Douglas Smith is deeply saddened to announce his passing at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 62 years and one son in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by his oldest son Dwayne in 1979. Doug is also survived by 24 nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives. Doug was a loving husband and father and very committed to helping others. No matter where the family lived Doug always found a place to volunteer. A memorial service was held at West Edmonton Christian Assembly with Pastor Paul Armfield officiating. It’s such a comfort to know Doug is now pain free and with the Lord and his son Dwayne. Doug will be greatly missed by family and friends and never forgotten.
IN LOVING MEMORY we tearfully regret to announce the passing of Doris Kathleen Porterfield, at the age of 94. On August 12, 2012 in the St. John Hospital in Vanderhoof B.C. Doris’s passing was predeceased by her husband Albert, and an infant daughter. She also leaves behind 2 sibling sisters, 3 sons and 5 daughters and their spouses. Her grand children, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, always brought great joy to her. As a longtime resident of Engen and Vanderhoof, Doris touched the hearts of a great many friends and neighbours. For such a small lady she had a very big heart. Her milk cows and family were her greatest joys. We (her family)would like to take a moment to express how thankful we all are of the fantastic care that she received from the staff at St. John Hospital. As per her wishes, a graveside service was held on August 15 for only her immediate family. In lieu of flowers she has asked that donations be made to St. John Hospital, Vanderhoof B.C. Her sense of humor and compassion will be greatly missed. In memory of Doris Porterfield her family would like to invite friends and neighbours to an informal tea. To be held at the Stuart Nechako Manor (located just above St. John Hospital) in Vanderhoof, on August 24 at 3 p.m.

Native to Spruce Grove, Alberta, constable Randy Stenger of the Vanderhoof RCMP detachment has been calling Vanderhoof home since July 18. With an opportunity to transfer, Stenger had his sights set on the Vanderhoof detachment as he had the opportunity to work alongside Sergeant Jason Keays in Dawson Creek over the course of 2 years. “I had the chance to transfer,” said Stenger. “I’ve heard really great things about the Vanderhoof community.” Stenger couldn’t be happier to continue his role as a general duties officer under the supervision of Sgt. Keays in a community that denotes a good “community spirit.” “A big part of wanting to come here was to work with Sgt. Keays again,” he said. Dawson Creek was Const. Stenger’s first post that had him and his family enjoying the northern climate for the last 4 years. Many new recruits are required to move around as an RCMP officer to gain varietal experience. “This is a stepping-stone in my career,” said Stenger. “I hope to move up in the detachment and taking on more responsibilities.” The major crimes section has been a “passion” of Const. Stenger’s, one that he hopes to fulfill as his career progresses. “I would like to work in a section that is specfic to major crimes,” said Stenger. “It’s an opportunity to
work off each others (officers) strengths in the detachment.” Const. Stenger started out with an interest to work in emergency services and it wasn’t until he moved to a small town that becoming an RCMP officer peaked his interests. “It has always been in the back of my mind to be an RCMP officer,” said Stenger. Like any other recruit, Stenger was required to go through the 6 month DEPOT
training in Regina. “It was hard to be away from my family,” said Stenger. “I had the support from my family which helped.” Having the opportunity to be working at a small town detachment Stenger is looking forward to having the chance to raise his family in Vanderhoof. “I’ve heard great things about the schools and the community here from friends back in Dawson Creek,” Stenger said. “It a good place for family and
