Back on his blades Peninsula Panther Brett Sjerven takes to the ice for a practice with the team last week. Sjerven suffered a collapsed lung earlier this summer and after surgery to correct it, he’s working on getting his stride back with hopes of play with the junior B team later this fall. s the sun went down on the Peninsula on Monday, Aug. 6, a large search was underway for Riley on both land and water. The 10-year-old black labradorborder collie cross was spending an average evening on Island

View Beach with his owner Christal Hazard, her friend Keri Ward and their children. That is, until he went missing. But Riley hadn’t just gotten lost. Instead, he wound up nearly two kilometres away after a swim uncharacteristic of a canine of his age. His disappearance was the subject of a large and
panicked search involving Good Samaritans, firefighters, police and Saanich Marine Rescue volunteers. As midnight came and passed and the search was called off, Hazard returned home feeling hopeless and defeated. “At that point I figured we were basically going to be searching for his body [the next day],” she
said. The night at Island View began normally with Hazard’s children and the dog playing nearby, something they do often. “The kids were playing in the grassy area and there were some other people down on the beach as well, including some people who were shooting off a potato gun. Popular North Saanich farm, market, garden tour event returns Kyle Slavin News staff
Talk of the importance of locally grown food has become more widespread of late, but North Saanich has been walking the talk for years now. Mayor Alice Finall says this weekend’s Flavour Trail event Aug. 24-26, now in its sixth year, is proof of that. And it’s a great way for locals to learn about the agriculture and farming industries taking place in their own backyard. “There are so many varieties of agricultural activities going on here, but I think a lot of people don’t really recognize that,” Finall said. “It’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s interesting, it’s educational and it’s something that people will not only learn from, but also really enjoy.” Flavour Trail offers a weekend full of free tours of farms, gardens, markets and more, giving residents a chance to chat with the growers, farmers and agricultural experts in the district. There are 15 participating businesses and organizations, plus activities at parks, heritage bike tours, seaside strolls and more. “I think the curiosity factor is really impor-
tant. People increasingly are becoming interested in local food and how it’s grown. And they taste it and realize how great it is,” Finall said. There are even fruit dehydration and cheese-making demonstrations. And it’s not just about the food. Come out and chat with experts on the natural flora and about how to plant your own garden – from berry plants and hedgerows, to olives and lemons. New this year is a Friday night kickoff at Muse Winery, featuring music and readings, along with local wine and food. Wain Park at 870 Wain Rd. will host free family fun throughout the day Saturday, including a country flea market, put on by the Parkland secondary grads, which is also new this year. The park will also feature family friendly games (potato sack races, egg on a spoon race, tug-of-war) with prizes, the mayor’s country hoe-down and a movie under the stars. Finall says the free event gets better with each passing year. And thanks to new venues coming on board all the time, visitors have something different to see every year. “It has been successful and it continues to be successful because of the interest by the community,” she said. “If you don’t keep doing it and make it a regular event, it loses its import and impact, and it loses its momentum. I think it’s extremely important for us to show the farmers and the venues

Sidney exclaims ‘nay’ to Shakespeare in Beacon Park Devon MacKenzie News staff
A proposal by the Rotary Club of Sidney to run an open-air Shakespeare production at Beacon Park was turned down by the town at their Aug. 13 council meeting. The Sidney Rotary Club had hoped to sell tickets to the production, which the actors had agreed
to do gratis, as a fundraiser. But the town’s policies on holding ticketed events in the public park proved to be a stumbling block. “We still have the possibility of doing it next year,” said Steve Duck from the Tides Group, one of the event organizers. The current use of the public parks policy states “no applicant shall sell or charge, or permit to
be charged, an admission/entry fee for an event.” The group that agreed to perform the Shakespeare production is Victoria’s Shakespeare by the Sea, the same group currently performing A Midsummer’s Night Dream in Holland Point Park on Dallas Road. “We were excited about doing the production [in Sidney],” said

This spring, the Saanich school district finished a complete overhaul of its computer networks – one that has drastically reduced its energy consumption and saved cash after years of budget cuts. School District 63 replaced every computer in every school with diskless, or thin clients. Each workstation in each school is now connected to a central server, allowing computers to run on less energy, start up and shut off at set times and receive simultaneous updates. The changeover reduced the school computers’ energy consumption by about 75 per cent. The model will also afford students access to more upto-date technology since whenever possible, open source software has been installed on the server in lieu of commercial products. “Often times schools are left with using used computers and then using very old software,” said Gregg Ferrie, director of information technology. “The technology is old and dated. The computers are end-of-life, but [school districts] simply cannot afford to do very much because they don’t have a lot of capital dollars.” The savings from replacing more than 2,500 aging Microsoft Windows-based workstations total more than one gigawatt hour per year, or roughly $80,000 on the district’s B.C. Hydro bill. The energy savings from desktop computers alone are enough to power two middle schools for a year. “It’s a whole new approach at looking at technology,” Ferrie said. A typical school like Stelly’s secondary has about 300 computers connected to the server. The IT department isn’t burdened with updating each one individually when it comes time, rather dealing with the single server alone. Computers are also turned on and off each day via the server, reducing the energy consumption even further. While there are pros and cons related to the

single point of failure, Ferrie said, there is redundancy built into the servers, which are also centrally backed up. “Let’s say one server did have a catastrophic failure and couldn’t come up and none of the work stations worked, we can replace that server very rapidly,” he said. The district is also developing Open Student, a student information program based on the same technology. Ferrie hopes Open Student, now being tested at Saanichton elementary school, would replace the current program, BCeSIS. “It was a bad scenario because it was putting old technology in students’ hands. If we wanted to put new computers on every student’s desk it would cost millions of dollars because they have a relatively short life span. Districts just don’t have the money to do that.” nnorth@saanichnews.com

OUR VIEW
Do voters want a pipeline? Perhaps Premier Christy Clark sees a battle with Alberta over revenue from allowing the Enbridge pipeline to use B.C. to link Alberta oil with tankers on the Pacific Ocean as the last hope to rally voters in time for the spring 2013 election campaign. It stands to reason, since the B.C. NDP has staked the opposed-to-pipeline position and the B.C. Conservatives have claimed the supportwith-conditions spot. However, by Put the Enbridge demanding that B.C. receive oil royalties proposal to from profits made from a referendum what flows through the pipeline, Clark is simply catering to those who already support the Enbridge proposal. Those opposed have said loud and clear it is not about money, but about inevitable environmental damage. Grand Chief Edward John of the First Nations Summit political executive summed it up in a scathing press release when he said the Clark Liberal government has missed the mark, stressing “B.C. First Nations’ traditional territories and pristine environment are not for sale.” John reminded Clark of the Supreme Court of Canada’s stance that there is a legal requirement for governments to “consult and accommodate” First Nations regarding any and all land and resource development initiatives in their respective territories. If First Nations cannot be convinced to allow a pipeline to be constructed through their territories the pipeline simply will not be. With Clark’s demand having been rejected by Alberta Premier Alison Redford, with First Nations still on the sidelines and with strong opposition among the public, perhaps it would be wise for Clark to add a non-binding referendum question to the May 14, 2013 general election ballot. A simple question – Are you in favour of the Enbridge pipeline proposal? – could produce results that tell the government of the day exactly which direction it should travel on this pipeline proposal. But there’s no denying that he came to the job in a crisis that will take more spending in the future and he will have a hard time finding it as Finance Minister Kevin Falcon looks to balance the books for the 2013 election. If nothing else, the pine beetle epidemic has forced the B.C. government to consider some of the intensive forest management that we hear about in Scandinavia, one of those places that supplies B.C. with wood furniture. And it has prompted renewed interest in offering new forest tenures to aboriginal communities with unresolved resource claims. Under current law, the government can only award new forest tenures to aboriginal communities. So part of the committee’s proposed solution is to “expedite negotiations” with the Burns Lake First Nations to give them a chance to harvest some of the marginally economic forest areas that remain. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

PENINSULA NEWS REVIEW - Wednesday, August 22, 2012
LETTERS Reactions to Woodwynn comment I find it extremely frustrating to hear Kathleen Busch, director of community development at Woodwynn Farms, talking down about Central Saanich and the people who choose to live here because of the official community plan and the Agricultural Land Reserve. I’m tired of hearing those involved with Woodwynn Farms who live outside of our community criticize the regulations and bylaws that have kept the Peninsula one of the best places to live. I’m a mother of young children and know many young families just starting out who own property in the area. Both my husband and I are working professionals and we found Central Saanich one of the most affordable places to live. We also love how our children can grow up around livestock and see where
our food comes from. We especially like being able to walk down the road to buy eggs from those “honesty stands” on large acreages. Critiquing those who have done well for doing something that is mutually beneficial for them and the community is absurd. I’m sure Kathleen doesn’t enjoy paying taxes herself. Central Saanich denies development plans that are not supportive of the ALR and OCP and I’m happy they do. Wanting to build worker housing is one thing – if it’s done within reason. Wanting to build a movie theatre, grocery store and whatever other plans Woodwynn is trying to pass off as farming is disrespectful to all citizens of Central Saanich who choose to live here for the lifestyle it provides. Woodwynn executives knew the bylaws
Readers respond: One side of NS council responsible for discord Re: The impassable chasm widens (News, July 20) It is my opinion that the primary responsibility for the current state of affairs in North Saanich lies with the new Team North Saanich, councillors Dunstan Browne, Craig Mearns and Conny McBride, as well as Ted Daly. I served three terms as an elected councillor and am a regular attendee at council meetings. I cannot recall such a lack of respect for established rules of procedure and conduct, as well as for the statutory rules of the mayor, council and chief administrative officer. Much of the confrontation arises from the desire of the majority to fast-track high density development. For example, they wanted council to approve in principle the East Saanich Road development before a formal application had been submitted, let alone any public consultation. When Mayor Alice Finall and councillors Elsie McMurphy and Celia Stock attempt to inject a
rational process, they and staff are met with accusations of stonewalling and obstructionism. The majority press for immediate action on these developments, however I find it ironic that when it came to the Sandown proposal, they required months of further investigation and reports, then abandoned the initiative for reasons that remain unclear to me. The impassable chasm is compounded by the fact the majority refuse to support the mayor in upholding and enforcing points of order and the code of conduct. Dee Bailin North Saanich
Grant funds went to fun and to streams Re: Grant to streams protectors gains negative attention (Letters, Aug. 17) I would like to respond to Sheila Irving’s letter in Friday’s paper. ■■■ It is interesting to note in the comment, or rant, from Kathleen Busch of Woodwynn Farms, she chooses to overlook the agricultural work of Dan’s Farm, Oldfield Orchard and Skylark Farm on Oldfield Road, Gobind Farms and the Jack Mar farm on Veyaness Road (with other fields) in her listing of those helping to serve and supply in the Land of Plenty. only do so much. For many years, Peninsula Streams Society has received the full amount or close to their full request. They have also been paid to do work for our District of North Saanich, for which they received tens of thousands of dollars. The cut in grant funds was not to undervalue their contribution to the various communities they serve, but to encourage further fundraising from other areas. They are a well-established society and certainly could do this very thing. Peninsula Celebrations Society did not get all the funding they requested and in fact a very small amount was given to them, much less than half of what Peninsula Streams received. Peninsula Celebrations arranged the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Dominion Brook park, the Canada Day parade and fun days, the Summer Sounds at the bandstand, the Christmas parade, the volunteer appreciation lunch and many other events, all while collecting funds and supplies for the food bank. Local racketlon players crowned world champions Devon MacKenzie News staff
A couple of local racket sport enthusiasts were crowned world champions in July. Racketlon players Peter and Damaris Brix from Brentwood Bay, travelled to Sofia, Bulgaria for the World Racketlon Championships that ran July 22 to 24 and won the 45 mixed doubles category. They beat out teams from 24 other countries to take the victory. “We were really excited, said Peter. “We were the first Canadians to win the championships so it meant a lot. We went up against the No. 1 ranked players in the world in doubles and singles. The two began playing racket sports separately as kids and met when they were teens. Their love for the sport blossomed even more after they met and the two have played together ever since. “We’ve played together for years so it was amazing to play at the worlds with my wife. It’s something we can remember forever, said Peter. Racketlon is a sport that encompasses four racket events (tennis, table tennis, squash and badminton) into one tournament. As the winners of the racketlon world championships, the two won’t have to qualify for next year’s worlds which they plan to attend. They will take place July 2013 in Holland. Upcoming competitions for the Brixes include the Pacific Rim Open Racketlon tournament Sept. 21 to 23 at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre and the Vancouver Island Racketlon competition to be held spring 2013 at Panorama Recreation Centre. sports@peninsulanewsreview.com

COMMUNITY NEWS IN BRIEF
Central Saanich man still missing Central Saanich police are still seeking the public’s assistance to locate a man who has been missing for two months. Bruce Sheppard, a 58-year-old Brentwood Bay resident, was last heard from on Friday, June 22. He is described as a white man, 5’10”, weighing 160 pounds with brown eyes and short brown hair. Police say Sheppard may have been driving his white 1998 Jeep YJ bearing B.C. licence plate 196 ALN when he was last seen. They also say there is a possibility that Sheppard may have been camping in a remote area. The lengthy absence is out of character for Sheppard. If you have seen or heard from Sheppard or have seen his vehicle, contact Central Saanich police at 250-652-4441.
Sidney business group reaches out The newly formed Sidney Business Development Group announced the launch of their new website earlier this month. The SBDG, a society of about 25 business members formed as an offshoot of the Sidney Merchants’ Co-op, was created to establish a new and effective community marketing strategy, said member Steve Duck from the Tides Group. The website, www.sidneybiz.com, is dedicated to sharing information about the growth and development of business in Sidney, Duck said. The website also features a survey about doing business in Sidney that can be completed by local business owners. / RE
North Saanich Flavour Trail kicks off this year on August 24, 7:00 p.m. at the Muse Winery, with wine and cheese, music, literary readings and an art show on the nature and farming themes by artists Jo Hadfield, Catherine McAvity and Judy McLaren. Saturday and Sunday are two Food, Farm and Culturally packed days, August 25th and 26th, in beautiful rural North Saanich. Come out for the weekend and enjoy the North Saanich Country Market, guided hedgerow and beach strolls, heritage bike rides, farm tours, First Nations crafts, country flea market with children’s country games, corn boil and hoedown and movies under the stars. Learn how to grow a copious amount of food on a small plot, how to grow berries, make cheese. Learn about growing cut flowers, relax with a homemade mint tea in an artist’s garden, smell freshly made lavender soap and taste lavender shortbread. Visit baby piglets and a team of Clydesdales, explore historic Dominion Brook Park then go next door to the Federal Centre of Plant Health and learn about plant DNS viruses. Take time to have tea at our heritage Holy Trinity Church and take a guided cemetery tour to learn about the Peninsula. Visit organic farms, taste bread made from locally grown grains, and learn how to grow lemons.
Hungry for more?! Join us for the weekend! Full details at www.northsaanich.ca or contact Dawn Gould at dgould@northsaanich.ca or 250-655-5459

Rescue volunteers, members from the Central Saanich fire department were also looking for the missing dog, at times even using an infrared heat detector to try to find the canine. But as the sky grew darker and the tide got higher, Hazard began to lose hope that they would find Riley. The last time Riley had been spotted by someone on the beach with binoculars they estimated he was just shy of James Island swimming back and forth. Hazard didn’t have much hope he would be found. “The search was finally called off around midnight and I went home around 12:30,” Hazard said. “It was a terrible feeling [not knowing where he was],” she said. As the sun rose the next day, Hazard was already awake. “I was already up, I hadn’t slept well and I was kind of anticipating what our next move was going to be to find [his body],” she said. Around 6 a.m. Hazard’s cellphone rang. She answered it, discovering it was Jason Thrupp, the general manager of James Island. Thrupp had been involved in the search the night before and Hazard feared what he might be calling to tell her. Thankfully, he had good news. Continued on next page

Hazard said the group had only been there about 15 minutes when she noticed Riley was once again missing. “I called for him again, but this time he didn’t come running,” she said. “As I walked down I met a few people who said they had just seen him go by so I continued down looking for him. The next people I met down the beach said they had seen a dog in the water, but I didn’t think much of it because Riley has never been much of a swimmer, he usually only goes in up to his chest.” Hazard and a friend spent the next hour or so looking for him and after a few more comments from people on the beach about seeing Riley in the water, she realized the witnesses might have been right. “When I finally realized that he must have taken off into the water I just didn’t even know what to do. One couple who saw him told me they thought he was a seal because they saw him way out and all they could see was “I was already his head bobbing in up, I hadn’t slept the water. When they saw him they well and I was kind last said he was [just off] of anticipating what James Island,” Hazard explained. our next move was Island View Beach going to be to find and James Island sit about two kilometres [his body].” apart, separated by – Christal Hazard, Cordova Channel which has a strong current Riley’s owner and can be very choppy depending on the weather. Hazard and her friend drummed up up any help they could get to find the missing dog. “I didn’t have a clue who to call, I mean who do you call in that situation? I called the police and I called the Coast Guard and finally we were able to get some people from James Island to go out and tour around the island on their boats,” Hazard said. “There were a lot of people looking for Riley.” Along with the police and the Saanich Marine

Healthy Eyes. Doctor Delivered.
2x6.5
Self treatment of tired eyes If your eyes get tired or inflamed occasionally, taking eye drops to make them feel better may actually increase the risk of future problems. Your eyes are very precious and delicate. They should never be treated without the advice of your eye care professional. Valuable time may be lost in detecting vision problems if you decide to treat tired or inflamed eyes yourself. It could be that the eye drops feel soothing or you believe washing out your eyes with a home remedy is all you need to relieve a minor eye problem. True, not all inflamed eyes are a sign of something serious, and perhaps the condition will soon alleviate itself. However, any persistent eye problem, even a minor one, should have professional care, as it could be a symptom of something more serious. You should have your eyes examined regularly, even if you’ve never had a problem in seeing clearly. You should have them examined to ensure they remain healthy and function properly.

prevent the dreaded blossom-end rot, that horrible dark brown scar that sometimes appears on the blossom-end of the fruit. If you haven’t already done it, this is probably a good time to thin your carrots, being careful to press the soil back around the remaining plants. I hope you are keeping the beans picked and stopping the upward growth of tomatoes now, encouraging the swelling of those lovely red orbs. This reminds me that I have two large tomatoes very nearly ready to eat, but their shoulders are still pretty green. so it will be a few days yet before the ceremonial picking. I’m sorely tempted, but still have two California-grown ones in the fridge so I’d better eat them first. If I start eating the home-grown ones – ones you’ve just picked – there is no turning back to the almost tasteless store-bought ones. Back on ice
A Panther is working his way toward health again
Devon MacKenzie News staff
Although the Peninsula Panthers’ season is ramping up and the young team is prepping for regular season games, one player is simply hoping to be able to lace up his skates and take a few laps around the ice. In May, 18-year-old Brett Sjerven, a Parkland graduate and Peninsula Minor Hockey veteran, began feeling a strange sensation in his chest. “I had this weird feeling in my chest and it hurt, but I didn’t think too much of it,” said Sjerven. “I waited a month before going to see the doctor and he referred me to get an X-ray. When I had it done, they got back to me right away saying they found a pneumothorax.” Sjerven was diagnosed with a pneumothorax, or a collapsed lung, and had air collecting in his chest cavity around his left lung. The pneumothorax was caused by a hole that had spontaneously formed in Sjerven’s lung. “I went in for tests the day after the X-ray and the next day the hole was even bigger,” Sjerven said. “The doctor put a tube in my chest that was supposed to suck the air out from around my lung, but instead the hole just got worse.” Sjerven spent the next few days in and out of the hospital

Each day I was allowed to try a little bit more, but I would get so winded just doing small distances. It was so crazy because before I could just go out and run 10 kilometres no problem. Now I can barely run to the end of my street without being com-
pletely winded.” Sjerven is on the path to recovery, working hard on getting his endurance up. “I can run for a minute now without stopping,” he said. “I’m taking power skating which is really helping and I’m trying to get out on the ice with [the Panthers] just to skate around a bit, but it’s going to be a long recovery. “Hopefully I’ll see some ice time and some playing time this season, but I know I’ll have to work hard and earn it,” he said. The Panthers play their home opener Sept. 7 against the Westshore Wolves. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at Panorama Recreation Centre. reporter@peninsulanewsreview.com
