fter tackling controversy with a documentary about South Asian gangsters and following it up with a fictional film about the same subject, South Surrey filmmaker Mani Amar was ready for a change of pace. So the former Port Alberni resident shot a documentary about the drug addicts who live on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and posted it online. The Decrepit was made for less than $5,000, a fraction of the budget Amar had for his award-winning documentary A Warrior’s Religion or his follow-up fictional film Footsteps into Gangland. Going online, Amar says, allowed him to make a movie quickly, without the timeconsuming process of lining up funding, crews and performers. And he was irritated by the way drug addicts in Vancouver’s skid road neighbourhood are often portrayed and wanted to do something that would show the human face of addiction. Amar describes his first-ever Internet movie as a “complete passion project.” The 30-year-old shot The Decrepit last summer, but didn’t find the time to finish editing the raw footage until a few months ago. In the 23-minute micro-budget film – viewable at http:// vimeo.com/38814733 – addicts tell their stories to Amar, who acted as his own cinematographer

and can be heard offcamera asking the questions. The interviews take place in the alleys of the run-down area of downtown Vancouver, often described as Canada’s poorest neighbourhood. “I’m not bad, I’m just crazy,” one subject tells Amar. “You don’t want to be where am I am now,” another interviewee says. Amar views his Internet experiment as a success on a number of levels. For one thing, it is far easier to find funding for a $5,000 web documentary than a $75,000 independent film. For another, the feedback for The Decrepit has been almost universally

‘That is my proudest accomplishment, that I helped someone.’ – Manny Amar

positive, unlike the outrage generated in some quarters by his previous productions. “Probably because no specific community was at the forefront of the subject matter (this time),” Amar says. When A Warriors’ Religion first came out in 2009, there were even threats on his life and police warned Amar some South Asian gangsters had put a price on his

head. “It has come down, I heard,” Amar says. “It was $25,000, now it’s $10,000.” A Warrior’s Religion featured the first on-camera interview ever granted by notorious former gangster Bal Buttar. Buttar, a selfdescribed hit man, was left blind and unable to move from the neck down in 2001 after he was shot twice in the head. In the film, Amar confronts Buttar. “Have you killed people?” he demands. “Yes,” Buttar whispers. “And you’re OK with that?” “No, I’m not OK, now. But I was.” Among other plaudits, the completed film won Best Documentary honours at the Sikh

International Film Festival in New York. Amar based his follow-up film, a work of fiction, on his research for the documentary. Footsteps into Gangland also raised hackles among some over its portrayal of sexual abuse within a South Asian family. But the film has also inspired imitators, with other movie makers setting films in the South Asian underworld of B.C. There have been at least five in what amounts to a new genre of crime films since Footsteps came out. Amar is not a fan. He says the imitators are glossing over the uglier aspects of the gang lifestyle, effectively glamorizing it.

The Decrepit, Amar’s newest work, has succeeded in making a measurable difference to at least one person, the filmmaker says. One man was so shocked at seeing himself in the footage that he entered a recovery program, “Is this what I look like?” he said to Amar. The man has been clean for about a year and has developed an interest in the online media that played a part in his current sobriety. “That’s my proudest accomplishment, that I helped someone,” Amar says. Amar is now preparing for his next film project, a documentary about “the beauty of human movement.”

Film maker Manny Amar has probed South Asian Gang life and additions on Vancouver’s downtown Eastside and now he plans to examine edgy teen issues in small towns like Port Alberni. Amar’s project will probe alcohol, drugs, sex and teen pregnancy. He was inspired to do the project after watching the 1995 movie ‘Kids’, which chronicled a day in the life a group of teens in New York City and their unrestrained behavior towards sex and substance abuse. Similar issues exist in small towns but play out differently, Amar said. “I grew up in Port and can draw on my own personal experiences to put it into context,” he said. Amar knows he’ll have his critics about the project but says he’d rather be honest than wear blinders. “I’m not trying to glorify the negative side of small town teen life,” Amar said. “I’m being honest about portraying the reality of it.” Amar excelled in school and straddled the South Asian and white worlds, neither of which he slotted comfortably into. He sees few people today that he graduated from high school with. He sees one who exhibited vast potential, Amar said. “He lives in Surrey now and is addicted to crack.”

The last ride: family remembers Jamie Collins WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

Bob Collins distinctly remembers the day his son Jamie Collins was born. He’d been waiting all day for Jamie to arrive and when he didn’t his wife Anne told him to get some sleep so he did. Bob got a call that Jamie was coming but by the time he got to the hospital Jamie arrived. “He was doing things in a hurry right away,” Bob said. Jamie’s life was cut short in a cliff diving accident on Saturday, Aug. 18. He was 33. He is survived by his parents and his brother and sister. Bob remembers his son as a happy and curious boy who enjoyed the outdoors and loved all animals. Jamie was both a good son and a good brother, his sister remembered. “He had a lot of tough love for me,” Laura

Olsen said. “But he was sweet, kind and compassionate and I idolized him.” He was best friends with and an accomplice to his older brother as well. “They got into a lot of trouble together but it was collaborative,” Olsen said. Jamie was a good student and with nimble reflexes excelled in athletics. Popular, Jamie had a wide group of friends, but according to Bob friends Jared Mallory and Brandon Wells ran like a thread through his early and late life. “One was in business with him and the other was there the day he died.” Although he never graduated from high school he stayed busy on the family’s farm. He also stayed busy with a pastime he discovered in childhood too — skateboarding. “I remember him skateboarding inside the house as a kid.

Holes in the gyproc and all,” Bob said. The sport was considered a fringe activity practiced by people with sketchy backgrounds. Jamie saw it differently though. He helped teach summer skateboard clinics. And he hosted an annual skateboarding event at the family farm that brought skaters and local kids together. “They were like a tribe and they all respected Jamie,” Bob said. “He took kids under his wing and never wanted to see anyone excluded.” Jamie went to both Vancouver and the US to pursue a professional skateboarding career. Family came first though, and Collins un-begrudgingly returned to the farm when his father developed painful back problems. Jamie loved being home as much as he loved his family, Bob

said. “He felt a real connection to the River, the lake and to the farm,” Bob said. He lived in Tofino and worked at building houses since 2003. He never surfed though. “He didn’t have enough meat on his bones to keep him warm,” Olsen said. Jamie just finished building his own home, which Olsen recently toured. “There were a lot of things about it that were uniquely him,” she said. The last time Bob saw his son alive was two days before he died. “I can still see him. He walked down to the field and said “Hey dad. Can I help you with those pipes?” Bob said. “I see him in a thousand different places when I look out at the farm. He loved it here.” A celebration of life is planned at Arrowvale Farm on Sunday, Aug. 26 from 1-3 p.m. reporter@alberniavlleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews.com

www.albernivalleynews.com Gary Murton, president of the Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society, at the site of a dam at McLean Mill that requires extensive repair. The society will decide what its role will be in repairing the dam. JULIA CARANCI/ SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Dam clock ticks down JULIA CARANCI SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Time is running out to perform costly repairs to the McLean Mill National Historic site dam that suffered extensive water damage last year. Port Alberni city council has been working on the issue, but has not made a final decision on how to fix the dam and who will be involved in the $600,000 project. Now, a quick-fix will likely be necessary to preserve the site until the full repair can be done next year. Right now the dam and road are stable, but city engineer Guy Cicon said something must be done before winter. “The provincial dam inspector requires us to stabilize the situation. The main issue is dam safety,” he said.

“But I’m not expecting us to complete the full project this year. We’re going to stabilize the existing dam and work on detailed design through the winter.” Cicon could not provide a cost estimate of the temporary fix. Port Alberni city Coun. Jack McLeman has touted the Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society (IHS) as being able to play a key role in the repairs. McLeman is concerned because the city originally budgeted $285,000 to fix the dam. “I believe it could be done at a lot lower cost,” he said. A recent meeting regarding the proposed repairs involved a number of stakeholders, but no

decision was made. As for the IHS, the society is debating whether or not they will take part in the final repair project, and which of the two proposed fixes they support. The group was expected to release a public statement Aug. 22, following a meeting of their directors. IHS president Gary Murton stressed the city will make the final decision on which option is best. His group can only express an opinion. “We want to help but whether or not we can is the question,” Murton pointed out. “We are mainly retired men. We’re all getting older.” He added a number of members do have experience with work and machines that could mitigate the cost of the repair.

If the IHS decides to participate, the offer is good regardless of which option the city chooses, Murton said. “For us, this is about maintaining historical accuracy and access,” he added. City council is looking at two options for the permanent repair of the dam: to rebuild the existing dam and aging wooden fish ladder at an estimated cost of up to $605,000 or; to construct a diversion channel around the mill pond and dam with an estimated $552,000 budget. Cicon is recommending council choose option two. “It’s the best option for fish passage,” he said, adding it will also lower operating costs because the pond will not have to be dredged if a diversion is in place.

Ballot question right approach Time for investment in forests Perhaps Premier Christy Clark sees a battle with Alberta – over revenue from allowing the Enbridge pipeline to use B.C. to link Alberta oil with tankers on the Pacific Ocean – as the last hope to rally voters in time for the spring 2013 election campaign. It stands to reason, since the B.C. NDP has staked the opposed-to-pipeline position and the B.C. Conservatives have claimed the support-with-conditions spot. However, by demanding that B.C. receive oil royalties from profits made from what flows through the pipeline, Clark is simply catering to those who already support the Enbridge proposal. Those opposed have said it is not about money, but the environment. Grand Chief Edward John, of the First Nations Summit political executive, said the B.C. Liberal government has missed the mark, stressing “B.C. First Nations’ traditional territories and pristine environment are not for sale.” John reminded Clark of the Supreme Court of Canada’s stance that there is a legal requirement for governments to “consult and accommodate” First Nations regarding any and all land and resource development initiatives in their respective territories. If First Nations cannot be convinced to allow a pipeline to be constructed through their territories, the pipeline simply will not be. It would be wise for Clark to add a nonbinding referendum question to the May 14, 2013 general election ballot. A simple question – Are you in favour of the Enbridge pipeline proposal? – could produce results that tell the government of the day which direction it should travel on this pipeline proposal. — Victoria News

ictoria — The B.C. government’s emergency committee on timber supply has produced its report, but it leaves many of the big questions unanswered. Can the Burns Lake sawmill, destroyed by fire last winter, be given enough timber to rebuild? It’s likely, committee members concluded, if areas that are currently considered “marginally economic” are harvested. With nearly half the pine in that region dead from beetle infestation, and much of the better timber already cut, that means harvesting areas that would produce only about two thirds of the volume that is currently considered economical to log. Will eight more sawmills have to close once the beetle-killed timber becomes too degraded to

cut in the next few years? Committee members hold out hope that extending the cut to less economic timber stands can reduce this impact as well. But with the current cut far above historical levels to maximize beetle-kill harvest, some industry contraction seems inevitable. All this depends on adequate forest inventory and investment in replanting, fertilizing and provision of additional roads and power lines that would allow access to timber and potential bioenergy development. And that is where the political fight lies ahead. The timber supply committee delivered a unanimous report, despite the harsh divisions between the B.C. Liberal and NDP members who serve on it.

NDP forest critic Norm Macdonald, vice chair of the committee, agreed it did good work during the seven months it has toured affected areas of the B.C. Interior. But he said the roots of the problem go back a decade, to when the B.C. Liberals started reducing support for forest health just as the beetle epidemic was spreading. Ten years ago the government removed the obligation for the province to reforest areas affected by disease and fire. This was not only at the peak of the epidemic, it was also one year before devastating wildfires raced through the Interior in the summer of 2003. “In 2002, the government removed its obligation to replant those areas, and cut the budget by 90 per cent,” Macdonald told me. “The three-year budget

that’s in front of us is keeping on the downward slide, and it’s not what people in communities are saying is the answer. So that has to change.” The opposition, the auditor general and various forest experts have been blasting the government for the degraded state of the timber inventory, at a time when environmental changes have been sweeping. Steve Thomson, minister of the newly amalgamated forests, lands and natural resource operations ministry, points to the urgent efforts to upgrade the government’s detailed picture of the state of the forests. It us doing this so it can consider new cutting, planting and fertilizing efforts. But there’s no denying that he came to the job in a crisis that will take more spending in the future, and he will have a hard time finding it as Finance Minister Kevin Falcon looks to balance the books for the 2013 election. Kitimat Clean A pipe dream

Should the province clean up the former rubber tire recycling plant immediately?

This week’s question: Should the city do something ab?

Hasten forest tenure talks with B.C. first nation From/ 8 If nothing else, the pine beetle epidemic has forced the B.C. government to consider some of the intensive forest management in Scandinavia. And it has prompted interest in offering new forest tenures to aboriginal communities with unresolved resource claims. Under current law, the government can only direct

award new forest tenures to aboriginal communities. So part of the committee’s proposed solution is to “expedite negotiations” with the Burns Lake First Nations to give them a chance to harvest some of the marginally economic forest areas that remain. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

To the Editor, Re: David Black’s Oil Refinery David Black, owner of the Black Press Group, says he wants to build an oil refinery in Kitimat. He claims coastal pollution would be less harmful if a tanker carrying refined petroleum products, rather than diluted bitumen, has an accident. I’m befuddled. Why not build the refinery in Alberta and minimize the bitumen pollution that would result from a pipeline failure? The Alberta option would also eliminate the added expense of building a recycling pipeline for the toxic distillate used to thin that gooey heavy oil. I can think of two reasons: one, refining crude oil requires enormous quantities of water, and two. Enbridge intends to ship bitumen out of Kitimat come hell, high water or a refinery. When I heard the company spearheading the bitumen refinery proposal was called Kitimat Clean Ltd, I instantly thought of

George Orwell’s book ‘1984’. In that fictional tale about tyranny, the Ministry of War is called the Ministry of Peace and the Ministry of Propaganda is called the Ministry of Truth. Kitimat Clean sounds like a name dreamt up by a team of public relation consultants after they consumed too many martinis. Hopefully Mr. Black will not misuse the power of his newspapers (over 80 of them are here in BC) to limit criticism of the Northern Gateway project and thereby manipulate public information. As anyone can see, there is now the potential for a conflict of interest. Lloyd Atkins, Vernon, B.C.

Schooled about boarding school To the Editor, Re: letter to the editor, Aug. 16. After commenting that British gentry paid to send their children to private schools, a question was recently asked in the Aug.16, 2012 edition of the Alberni Valley News, if Canada is the first

to compensate First Nations for having attended residential schools. Like there’s some comparison? To answer the question, I would ask everyone to please read Mr. Basil Johnston’s bittersweet autobiography called ‘Indian School Days’. He describes everything from lonliness and deprivation to the soul-numbing routine of a genocidal government policy of assimilation that ripped native children from their parents with tragic results for many generations. At least British children made it home from their exclusive private schools, for as many as 50 per cent of Canadian Indian residential school children never even made it home from school. They died, away from their home and family. Further, the question is asked “Does society even care?” We’re talking about it, so I guess we — thankfully — do. And, if I have anything to do about it, society will increasingly care. So I live in hope. Liz Stonard, Port Alberni

Grin and Dave Barrett To the Editor, After defeating the Social Credit Party, WAC Bennett had one request. That was for Dave Barrett to build a three-lane span next to the Lions Gate bridge. He told Barrett that there was funding in treasury for the project. Barrett did not listen and went on to bankrupt the province. In 2012, the Lions Gate bridge is still only three lanes. Barrett will be remembered for his spending and quickly taking the government from surplus to debt. Barrett reformed the welfare system making it so popular as to say why work when NDP welfare benefits are fantastic. Barrett brought in ICBC. In 197576, B.C. taxpayers had to bail out their government run insurance company just two years after it begun operations. This money has never been repaid. At the same time, ICBC had been so mismanaged, with insurance being sold significantly underpriced, that the government was forced to increase

rates by at least 25 per cent. Did a major public sector expansion. Highest number of government employees in history for a provincial government. So preoccupied with a bankrupt government, Barrett did not even consult with his cabinet about calling a provincial election. Alex MacDonald, NDP former attorney general, watched the announcement on the TV news at home. Lost three provincial elections in a row to Bill Bennett of the Social Credit party. On Oct. 6, 1983, Barrett was removed from chamber for failing to abide by the speaker’s ruling. This was the first incident in the legislature history where security staff had to intervene and remove a member from chamber. When Barrett and the NDP formed government, it is believed they were in “minority party syndrome” and did not have the knowledge or expertise to operate as a government. Joe Sawchuk, Duncan, B.C.

We all need to have a sense of why we are here. To know we were created for a purpose gives us hope. We all need a vision for our lives and a strong sense of purpose. Finding fulfillment and happiness is never going to happen until we are doing that for which we were created. God has called us to be faithful in the small things, then later He will move us into the bigger things. He does have a good purpose for your life. Let this be your personal prayer. “Lord, Jesus, I pray that nothing will draw me away from fulfilling the plan You have for me. May I never stray from Your purpose for my life and what You have called me to be and do. I put who I am and my life into Your hands - lead me, guide me according to Your will. Amen”

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs have acquired the playing rights of Darian Henry from the Drumheller Dragons in exchange for the playing rights to Bulldogs forward Juston Morello.

The Alberni Valley Multiplex is quiet now but the Alberni Valley Bulldogs are busy off the ice. The Bulldogs announced they have acquired the playing rights to sixfoot-three 179 pound defenseman Darian Henry from the Drumheller Dragons in the Alberni Junior Hockey League in exchange for the playing rights of Bulldog Justin Morello. The Bulldog forward played 30 games and scored 28 points last season. Henry started the 2011/12 campaign with the Everett Silvertips in the WHL after being selected by the ‘Tips in the seventh round of the 2009 WHL bantam draft. Henry registered only one assist in 16 games in Everett before

being reassigned to Drumheller, where he notched one goal, two assists, and 62 penalty minutes in 16 games. “Given the opportunity to acquire Darian Henry, we knew that we had to give up some talent to get his talent,” said Bulldogs head coach Kevin Willison. Henry has Western Hockey League experience and is a stay-at-home defenseman, assets which make him a coveted find. “We are always looking to upgrade our defensive core, either immediately or for the near future.” Henry won’t be suiting up for the Bulldogs right away though. Instead, he will start the season with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League after the club recently acquired his rights from Everett.

Course management in Alberni Alberni JOAN THOMPSON

Pitch n’ Putt

A nice long drive does not always mean that your ball will end up on the fairway. A straight fairway shot does not mean it’s not in the bushes or ricochetting off the trees. Several of the ladies of the NineHole Division found parts of the course easy to par though.

Bea Stuyt and Nancy Clayton mastered hole No. 17. Marie Swain and Marta Williamson each handily parred hole No. 13. Swain came in with the Low net placing following LaDonna Knutson who placed first low gross. In the B Division, it was Pat Dahlquist with first low gross and June Parks taking the low net. There was no putting jar to scoop up today as the greens were being

aerated so putting out was not necessary. Last but not least, Louise Berlinski was the only member to record a chip-in that took care of her putts, who needs them. 18-Hole Division: Putting green aeration affected all divisions this morning. A limit of two putts per hole were imposed. Wow, what a difference that made to the scores. The back nine was played twice and the

ball sweep format was to total the score on No. 10, No. 11 and No. 12 the first time around then adding in the total of holes No. 14, No. 5 and No. 16 the second time around. Marie Randall took the first prize with 30 points and Carol Bouchard was in for the second place close behind with her 31. Bouchard was back in the clubhouse with her low gross placing of 83, nice game in

and her own course management skills. The Solheim Cup reported the following statistics in their on-going competitions. Morning Star are in the lead with 15 points. Eagle Crest is second with 14 points and Alberni is only two off the lead with 13 points. Alberni is hosting the final round on Sept. 14. Let’s hope Alberni uses “course management”.

spite of the tough putting surface. Our own Colleen McDonald recently attended the two day tournament in Courtenay at Sunnydale Golf Course. She got off to a poor start but ended up the two day competition taking the second low net placing. She attributes her successful games to the assistance of her new young caddy, River Barkhouse

Hollies Ladies Night brought another beautiful evening of golf with an awesome group of women. I am so pleased to see so many new faces this year becoming regulars. There were some new winners this week. LaDonna Knutson won the closest to the pin on the second shot. Jean Boyko won the longest putt of the night. Maryann McConnell won closest to the pin and Lindsay Sexton won the longest drive.

The winner for the “B” division was Lee Creighton, followed closely by Courtenay Witte. Winner of the “A” division was Maryann McConnell, followed by LaDonna Knutson. My predictions were right. Maryann McConnell did not take kindly to being in second spot on the Shoppers Drug Mart ringer board competition. She has caught up with Sue and both women are tied at two under par totals of 28. It is going to be a very tight race to see who is going to be the ultimate winner this year. Good luck to both of you.

I would also like to recognize our many sponsors of ladies night. Without your generous donations, we would not be able to host these ladies nights. Please remember to support our local businesses! When you golf with a group of women, you develop a comradeship with each other. They cheer for you when you have a good shot and are give you words of encouragement on those not so good shots. To the women that I golf with every week and to all of the women that I have golfed with, thank you for being so supportive.

Please note: that any requests for in kind use of City facilities, equipment or services or for financial contributions to community organizations or events for 2013 are directed through the Community Investment Program. In order to be eligible to apply for support under the CIP, the organization must have a member attend an Orientation Workshop. Alberni boy survives cougar attack WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON

Alberni Valley News

cougar,” he says softly. “My dad hit him with a rock and he’s gone now.” Schaffer pauses for a moment before reflecting on the day of the attack. The family of three pitched a camp at Taylor Flats at 6 p.m., just as they had several times before in the last two years. Kaylum enjoyed a wiener roast for supper and, after finishing, the family walked along a path to the river to wash their hands and utensils. Schaffer walked 10 feet behind Richard, while Kaylum walked 10 feet in front of him when he rounded a corner by a bush, she said. “That’s where the cat pounced on him. I didn’t see it but Richard did,” Schaffer said. “He screamed ‘Get off my kid — get off ’. Then he grabbed a rock and bashed it in the head.” Schaffer found there was no cellphone reception to call 911, so Richard scooped a profusely bleeding Kaylum in his arms

A seven-year-old Port Alberni boy and his family will remember a fivesecond attack by a cougar for the rest of their lives, Bobbi Schaffer said. Schaffer is the stepmother of Kaylum Doherty, 7, who was attacked by a cougar on Aug. 15. Kaylum’s father Richard wasn’t available for comment. On Aug. 15, Richard Doherty, 41, fought off a cougar that attacked Kaylum after a tent was pitched at the Taylor Flats section of Sproat Lake. The boy was rushed to West Coast General Hospital with puncture wounds to his head, back, and left arm. “It all happened so fast. I can’t believe we almost lost him,” Schaffer said. According to wildlife officials, a necropsy on the adult male cougar revealed

and made a run for their car. Inside, Schaffer applied First Aid

with a towel. “I kept thinking ‘towelpressure, towelpressure’ like I learned in a St. Johns Ambulance First Aid course,” she said. The family’s troubles compounded when their car stalled

by Sproat Lake Landing, where they finally managed to contact 911. “That was the scary part: the car was dying, there was no cellphone reception and Kaylum was bleeding,” Schaffer said.
