The next logical step for such a tight group was to ask Carole Cochran’s graphic designer daughter to create a logo. As a show of solidarity, eight of the women marched into Cloverdale’s Pro Pain Ink to have their “pair of bees” tattooed on their right feet (one could not get the tattoo for medical reasons). The woman met when their now adult children attended Cloverdale Elementary. They would help run the school’s hot dog lunches, and that connection has since led to rituals such as their annual Academy Awards party and weekly Monday coffee nights (yes, every week). When four of their sons turned 30, the women hosted a birthday fundraiser to raise money for the guys’ participation in

By Kristine Salzmann You’d be hard pressed to find a group of women as close-knit as the Parabees. For at least two decades the nine Cloverdale moms have supported each other through good times and bad: weddings, deaths, children’s milestones, and, not least of all, breast cancer. Two of the moms, Pat Dezall and Cathi Woodward, are breast cancer survivors. Dezall discovered she had cancer in 2000 after a routine mammogram, and Woodward was diagnosed four years later. It was supporting each other through cancer treatment that sparked the group name, one private joke among many.

Charity get thrifty Official opening of new thrift store in downtown Cloverdale this Saturday By Kristine Salzmann Organizers of a new charity thrift store in downtown Cloverdale are already experiencing the good will of the community. Alan and Judy Daser, founders of Eversafe Ranch and Doolittles Animal Rescue, opened the doors to the organization’s first thrift store on Tuesday (Aug. 21). On Monday, the shop was a flurry of activity and chatter as volunteers cleaned the floors and priced items in preparation for opening day. They had yet to ring up a sale, but Alan Daser said the group has had many people poke their heads in to express their excitement. A local artist walking by even offered to paint them a mural, free of charge. Greg Evans-Davies paid tribute to the animal rescue side of the organization with a wall painting of dogs and children playing in an expansive green field. In fact, the community’s generosity is what inspired the thrift store. Eversafe provides

furniture, housewares, clothing and often food to Surrey families in need. Judy Daser said they were receiving so many donations of household items that they were having to turn items away. Now, through the store, they can raise money for Eversafe and Doolittles as well as offer affordable furniture, clothes and children’s gear to the community.
“We recognized there were a number of families in this area that couldn’t afford to properly outfit their homes,” Alan Daser said in a media release. “We’re hoping this thrift store will fill that gap.” They accept “anything you can find in a house,” he added. The community is invited to an official opening of the Eversafe/ Doolittles Charity Thrift
Store (5666 176 St.) this Saturday, Aug. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The store’s regular hours are Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional volunteers to help run the store are always welcome, Daser said. Have your say on new electoral map The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for B.C. is set to hold public hearings throughout the province this September and October on its new federal electoral map. They raised money by sending out an annual plea for donations to friends and family via email, but last year the group decided to harness that Parabee energy and have some fun. They hosted a pub night at The Tudor Ale House that raised more than $5,000 toward a final team total of $9,311. “It was amazing, the support we got from the community,” Dezall says. Donations to their silent auction

The fundraiser on Friday, Sept. 7 will once again be at The Tudor Ale House (187 Hwy. 15) and feature a silent auction, raffle, door prizes, and live music. The Cloverdale Spurs Mosquito A baseball team brought home the gold after capturing the provincial championship title earlier this month. The Spurs competed against the top 10 qualifying teams from throughout the province at the BC Minor Baseball tournament hosted by Coquitlam on Aug. 5. The win capped off a successful season that included a record of 20-1, plus wins at the Boulanger Summer Ball Tournament in Cloverdale and Kelowna Valley of Champions tournament. The coaches and parents congratulate the Spurs on an outstanding season.
Olympian admitting his mistake inspiring The 2012 Summer Olympics are in the books, the cheers have wound down and the tears have dried up. More important, television schedules will be back to normal. It was a great diversion to watch the Winter Olympics on those cold, wet days and nights. The summer events however had to compete with picnics and barbecues, and often we felt guilty glued to the screen as a fine summer day drifted away on us. I’m sure most of us got some goose bumps watching Christine Sinclair’s beaming smile as she entered the stadium as our closing ceremonies flag bearer. Obviously that duty is an honour, and much deliberation goes into the selection. Sinclair certainly deserved the spot in her team sport role. We had one gold medal winner, we had members who have competed in multiple games and others who have been repeat medal winners. All would have been accepted as a great choice and their smile would have been just as big. I wonder if the selection com-

What about employees who deny wrongdoing, and chase the system through mediation or arbitration until the system buries their mistakes? What about judges who make mistakes? I think a replay of Connaughton’s admission should be replayed in our schools and sports arenas as often as the podium scenes are. His words remind the public that a first-class athlete doesn’t always end up with a trophy on his shelf or a medal around his neck. Life without rules or officials to enforce them would be pretty chaotic. At least that’s what McGregor says. Jim McGregor is an accomplished writer and poet who, until 2006, was also Langley City fire chief. He writes a weekly column, McGregor Says, for The Langley Times.

When Jane Kramer returned from holiday, there was a new feature to her store: a hole in the wall. Someone had driven a car into the north side of La Belle Vie in downtown Cloverdale. The incident happened last Thursday afternoon (Aug. 16). An employee was ringing through a customer’s purchase at the back of the shop when the vehicle crashed into the side of the building from the adjacent parking lot, Kramer said. Home decor merchandise such as lamps, mirrors and clocks crashed to the ground. Neighbouring businesses heard the bang, and the customer at the cash register thought an earthquake had struck. Kramer estimates there was thousands of dollars worth of damage. However, she’s keeping things in perspective. “Everything can be replaced,” she said in a phone interview. “I’m just happy no one was hurt. You think you’re safe with a parking lot on the other side. It would have been dangerous if someone had been up there [on that side of the store].” —Kristine Salzmann

Last year’s agricultural artwork recognized the 99th CFL Grey Cup hosted in Vancouver; this year’s design is a giant turkey complete with the B.C. While the design is clear from a view above, visitors weaving through the corn along dirt paths by foot could be a speck on the turkey’s head or wing and not know it. On a nice weekend hundreds of people from across the Lower Mainland traverse the maze - last year about 1,500 visitors came out on the final weekend of operation in October, Novy Bose said. Hundreds traverse the maze each weekend By Kristine Salzmann Waiting for The Bose Family Corn Maze to open this summer may have felt like watching corn grow: slow if you’re eagerly awaiting a gleeful tromp through the stalks, but then it’s here before you know it. Spring rain and defective flood boxes delayed planting by almost a month, which means one of Cloverdale’s must-do activities opens late this year at the end of August. The stalks are currently three to four feet high, said Novy Bose in an interview last week, but if the weather is right the corn can grow four inches a day and could be seven feet tall by opening day. “Corn is a desert plant, it likes the heat,” she said, adding some rainfall between now and then would help. The Bose family (Mike, Novy, Kevin and Matthew) has operated the maze for 13 years, and

Surrey Pioneer Eric Anderson (actor Ian Harmon) tells visitors at the Surrey Museum last Saturday of his arrival in Cloverdale as a pioneer in 1872. Anderson, a Swede and former whaler, built a homestead on Latimer Road (192 Street) after sailing across the Pacific. Anderson was joined on Aug. 18 at the museum by other historic figures, all part of the finale of this summer’s performances by the Frontier Tale Blazers. The actors’ group made visits to several Surrey festivals throughout July and August.

Of the seven horses she’s had since becoming an owner six years ago, he was also her biggest challenge. “He became even more of a challenge because so many people considered him dangerous. There were fears – actually, the first few times he was in a race people were leery of him,” Roberts recalls. She and another trainer decided to give Mmmmmh 30 days. They were patient, calm, and on day 28 they put him through a qualifying race. He passed, and starting racing last November. He paid for himself by making Roberts $9,200 that season – and more importantly, he did not act out in a single race. “For a horse that was considered dangerous and that people said would never make it, he’s proved that he’s got capability.” Four-year-old Mmmmmh raced last Sunday (Aug. 19) in the harness racing season’s opening weekend at Fraser Downs, but drew an outside post position and finished sixth of eight. The Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society hoisted its two interurban railcars by GWIL crane onto a flatbed truck at Sullivan Station last week on Aug. 15. The railcars were moved to their new home, a car barn in Cloverdale at 176 St. and Hwy. 10, late in the afternoon. IV nurses scrapped Regular nurses to be trained for tricky insertions By Jeff Nagel Fraser Health is eliminating specialized nurses who perform challenging intravenous needle insertions at the region’s largest hospitals. Surrey Memorial, Royal Columbian and Burnaby hospitals are the only ones in the region with IV nurse teams, but they’ll be disbanded in September in a move that will save $600,000 a year. Fraser Health officials say regular floor nurses will be trained to take over all injections. But some patients whose veins are difficult to locate fear the change will bring them much more pain through excessive needle pokes if regular nurses prove
less skilled than the teams. “When I heard about this I thought ‘Oh my God what am I going to do?’” said North Delta cancer survivor Barbara Smith, whose veins are scarred from chemotherapy and has preferred insertions by IV nurses who usually find the vein on the first try. Smith said she’s now somewhat reassured and hopeful the promise of broad training will mean all nurses end up more skilled in IV insertions. “A lot of people have a difficult IV start,” she said. “I’m skeptical just because there is a certain touch to this. There is an art to it.” Fraser Health spokesman Roy Thorpe-Dorward said the IV
nurse teams at the three hospitals were overloaded by demand, leading to long waits for patients to get insertions. The region would have had to invest more money in bigger teams in order to meet the demand and reduce waits, he said, adding the decision was instead to provide the specialized IV training to many registered nurses and harmonize with the method at smaller hospitals. “We’ll be investing in training for quite a significant number of nurses – several hundred,” said Thorpe-Dorward, adding all nurses won’t be trained but enough to achieve a critical mass. Ten specialized positions will be lost From page 7
Ten specialized IV nursing positions will be lost – five at Royal Columbian, four at Surrey Memorial and one at Burnaby – although it’s expected those nurses will bump into other positions based on seniority. B.C. Nurses Union vice-president Janice Buchanan said summer is a difficult time to launch a training program and doubted enough nurses would be ready by September because many
are on summer vacation. She noted the change means a net cut in nurses. “It does not make sense when you’ve got a workload issue where the volume is so high to eliminate the teams and download the work to the floor nurses,” Buchanan said. “I fail to see how they think this is in any way a solution.” Other big hospitals in the Vancouver Coastal region and Greater Victoria are keeping their IV nurse teams, she added.
