Aug. 25 will be a day of partying and promoting the concept of a new arts and culture centre on Canyon Street and 15th Avenue. “We have all sorts of events planned,” Friends of the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre Society president Simon Lazarchuk said on Wednesday. “We will have live
music, including Fat Charlie, food (including a ‘humongous’ barbecue) and plenty of other entertainment.” Public awareness and support is needed to push renovations to the building being purchased from the Ingham family. Lazarchuk said that applications for grants have been sent out and that support from regional directors and the Town of Creston has been strong. See PUBLIC, page 3

Eyes on screen, hand on mouse I am looking at a Monster. Why does It take pleasure in Harming, humiliating, hating me Yet I am glued to Its ugly face. It barks orders and threats, It pushes me to the ground, Then I retaliate. I say mean things about others. Fear and hate chase me in a maze I cannot flee. I am bound to the works I say and to my insecurities, Then the Monster forces me onto an edge. I teeter and waver back and forth, It nudges me closer every day, with everything It says, Convincing me that I am worthless. My self-assurance disappears, My balance is lost, and The Monster laughs.

Footlighters holding auditions for fairy tale-themed plays FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY
With one 18th season production finished, Footlighters Theatre Society is preparing to cast the next, Fractured Fairy Tales, an evening of two one-act plays. Big Bad and The Quest for Quasi will run Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at the Prince Charles Theatre, and require 24 cast members, who can audition at 7 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Snoring Sasquatch. In Big Bad, the Big Bad Wolf the defendant in a class-action lawsuit by the characters he has wronged, with the Enchanted Forest’s greatest legal minds — the Evil Stepmother and Fairy Godmother — clashing in a televised trial. Little Red Riding
Hood, her Grandmother, the Three Little Pigs and the Shepherd in charge of the Boy Who Cried Wolf testify, but the Big Bad Wolf presents a good case. “In the end, the verdict is left in the hands of the audience,” said Big Bad director Jon Smith. “That adds a great twist that will be a lot of fun for the audience and the actors.” Brian Lawrence will direct The Quest for Quasi, in which Red Riding Hood falls in love with Quasimodo, but can’t be with him until she collects a few objects — including Captain Hook’s hook — for the Wicked Witch of the West. Along the way, she encounters the Big Bad Wolf, Cinderella,
Aladdin and Pinocchio — just some of the 20 roles designed in a way that a cast of 10 can play them. “This gives some of the performers a great opportunity to expand their abilities by playing two or three completely different roles,” said Lawrence. “It’s not something that has been possible in many of our recent productions.” Auditions for Big Bad and The Quest for Quasi will be by cold readings from selected portions of the scripts. Creston hit the national airwaves in a live TSN broadcast on Friday afternoon — part of winning the Kraft Celebration Tour — and the organizers couldn’t be happier. “I’m so excited not only for Creston and the Creston Valley, but the Kootenays,” said Myrna Johnson, the driving force behind the campaign to see Creston host the tour and SportsCentre broadcast. “All of Canada gets to see what we get to see every day, and they can see our pride and support.” Johnson had entered Creston in several national contests before, including the 2011 Kraft Celebration Tour, but this was the first win, which saw the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program (TRP) win $25,000. In a co-ordinated 24-hour effort, Creston voters beat the Kimberley Nordic Club by more than 30,000 online votes, with more than 171,000 being cast. A large crowd enjoyed free
samples of Kraft products on the field at the Creston and District Community Complex (CDCC), then headed up to the parking lot, where a portable TSN stage was set up to air SportsCentre , which featured a segment on five-year-old TRP rider Alexis Folk, with hosts Darren Dutchyshen and Kate Beirness from 3-4 p.m. The afternoon went off without a hitch, thanks to the efforts of about 125 volunteers. “If it wasn’t for volunteers, this wouldn’t happen,” said Johnson, shrugging off credit for the event. “You can be a driving force, but if there aren’t people there to support you, it’s not going to work.” “The scariest thing was when I showed up at the volunteer orientation meeting yesterday and the room was packed,” said TRP co-ordinator Michelle Whiteaway. The TSN team arrived in Creston on Thursday, giving the hosts and crew a chance to tour the area — in Dutchyshen and Beirness’s case, from a helicopter in their first-ever helicopter ride. The live broadcast of the
sports news show included a segment on the TRP, giving the country a good look at the Creston program, one of only a few like it in the Kootenays. Since winning the contest a few weeks ago, Whiteaway said the publicity has greatly increased local awareness of the program that runs at 849 Erickson Rd. “They come up and say, ‘Oh, I didn’t know you guys were down there,’ ” she said. In addition to the many volunteers, Whiteaway specifically acknowledged the contributions of Creston Mayor Ron Toyota, CDCC manager Randy Fediuk and recreation supervisor Neil Ostafichuk, Kathy Tompkins at the College of the Rockies, Overwaitea Foods and, of course, Johnson. “They pulled everything out for this, absolutely everything,” she said. Johnson is proud of the community’s effort to make the event a success, and hopes it will have a great impact in the future. “I think a lot of positive things are going to come out of this for everybody,” she said.

Swimmers earn medals in regional championships CRESTON WAVE SWIM CLUB
After preparation all summer, on Aug. 4 and 5 the Creston Wave Swim Club attended regional championships in Colville, Wash. Swimmers needed to place in the top three in the region or obtain a provincial qualifying time (PQT) in order to qualify for provincial championships. Six swimmers represented the club at regionals and all six qualified for provincials in Nanaimo from Aug. 16-19. Div. 6 girl Anita Bjarnason got five personal bests and obtained a silver medal in the 50-metre freestyle, 100m breaststroke, and 100m freestyle. Carter Pelly got a best time in her 100m freestyle and got a PQT in the Div. 2 girls 50m free-

Emily Simpson swam hard, getting five best times and obtaining a PQT in the Div. 5 girls 100m breaststroke. Emily also took home silver in the 100m breaststroke, and bronze in the 100m and 50m freestyle. Kieran Simpson went some season bests in his races and obtained a silver medal in the Div. 6 boys 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:21.08, and bronze in the 200m individual medley (IM). Sierra Simpson took off time in seven out of eight of her races and brought home two bronze medals in the Div. 2 girls 50m breaststroke and 100m IM.
Coach Kevin Woykin also had season best times in most of his races, taking home silver in the Div. 8 men’s 200m IM and 100m backstroke, and bronze in 100m freestyle. The div. 6 girls relay consisting of Bjarnason, Emily, Pelly and Sierra also qualified for provincials, placing second in the region in both the medley and freestyle relays.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Ahlefeld, on August 17, 2012.
Mary was born in Saskatchewan where she received her education and married her husband Hugo. They later moved to Alberta and then to Wynndel, BC. Mary was predeceased by her husband Hugo; parents John and Barbara Decker; sister Felica (Bill) Manz; brother Ed (Lilly) Decker; daughter-in-law Sheila Ahlefeld; grandson Keith Ahlefeld and son Gary Ahlefeld. She is survived by her two sons Ben (Donna) and Fred (Betty); daughter-in-law Joan; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A Funeral Service was held Wednesday August 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Tom Kakkaniyil ofciating. Amy Grace Brown July 26, 1921 ~ August 12, 2012 Amy Grace was born at Saskalta, AB on July 26, 1921. She was the youngest of seven children born to Frank and Amy Coates who had a homestead in the district in 1909, coming from Peterborough, ON. Amy is predeceased by her husband David Henderson Brown; sisters Enilda, Audrey and Thelma; brothers Cecil, Earl and Orville. Amy Grace Brown was the last of a wonderful pioneer family. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Eldon and spouse Diane; grandson David Nathan Johnson; granddaughter Jennifer, spouse Walter Felytsyn, and great-grandsons Evan and Olexa Felytsyn. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews of the Coates Clan that have always visited and kept in touch over the years; Mervin and Jeanette, Lloyd and Jo, Ray and Adele, Audrey and Ross Jamieson, Laverne and Marta, Claire and Carroll, Guy and Amber, Lorraine and Denise and Marlin Pezderic. A Private Family Graveside Service was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC.

From the garage to the big screen, a local band or artist could end up on the soundtrack for The Movie Out Here. If they think they have what it takes, they can submit a song online on at www.themovieouthere.ca. Until Sept. 3, local artists and bands can upload a video or mp3 of their song. Bands are encouraged to upload cover art or an image of their band to stand out from their competition. “Every movie needs a great soundtrack,” said Kokanee brand manager Amy Rawlinson. “Kokanee is encouraging western Canadians with musical talent to submit their song for the chance to be featured in The Movie Out Here. We are leaving it open in terms of what we are looking for. “The Movie Out Here is a buddy comedy featuring Kokanee’s colour-
ful cast of characters — including Sasq, the Glacier Girls, Glacier and Fresh and more — so we want something fun, energetic and creative that will help bring the movie to life.” Once a band has uploaded its song, it’s up to its members to rally their fans to vote. In order to qualify for the movie, the band will need a minimum of 75 votes. Once bands have qualified, the Kokanee team will select the track that best fits with the story. The Movie Out Here pays tribute to all things western Canadian — the mountains, local communities and residents. The buddy comedy features a group of guys that reunite in a ski town and encounter an adventure of mountainous proportions. The movie will film in Western Canada during August and September. Disaster was narrowly averted on Sunday evening when a vehicle went over the bank on Highway 3 and into a campsite near Canyon-Lister Road. “Fortunately, the campers weren’t in their tent,” Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. “They were sitting around the campfire.” The male driver and a female occupant in the vehicle both were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The driver told police he was tired and simply failed to negotiate the tight curve above the campsite. Police Beat Creston RCMP responded to 106 calls for service from Aug. 13-19, Gollan said. August 13 •A 26-year-old female was charged after police investigated a complaint of uttering threats over a cellphone. •When police investigated a 911 emergency call made from a resort near Moyie Lake, they were told that a group of youths had been seen playing with a pay phone nearby. The youths were not identified. •A white trailer marked Skimmerhorn Renovations (in green) and tools were stolen from a 48th Avenue residence. Anyone with knowledge of the theft is asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers. •A complaint about harassing behavior was made by a Dogwood Street resident. •A collision occurred on Northwest Boulevard when a white pickup truck cut off a vehicle in an intersection. No injuries were reported. •A thief didn’t need to roll up the rim to win when he spotted a truck with General Grabber tires and polished aluminum rims parked on Hawkins Creek Forest Service Road near Yahk. The owner returned to find the rims and tires, including the spare, missing from his truck. •Police mediated a heated argument between a male and female on Vancouver Street. •A complaint about threats made by email was made from Erickson Road. •A diesel truck towing a boat was reported to be passing unsafely on Canyon Street. •A police patrol pulled up to a vehicle on Haskins Road just as the four male occupants, ages 21 to 37, were about to light up their joints. About six grams of marijuana was seized. •Police attended a Dogwood Street residence to keep the peace while one of the occupants moved out. •After a driver on Canyon Street nearly hit another vehicle head-on, he was issued a ticket for driving without due consideration. •A 20-year-old visitor from Sherbrooke, Que., was injured when he fell while attempting to jump onto a moving train near Canyon Street. •A female faces charges following a domestic assault on Ninth Avenue North.

August 14 •Police are investigating a complaint that a driver who was filling his vehicle at a Highway 3/95 service station refused to pay and drove off after the pump indicated he had put 69 litres of gas into what is supposed to be a 60-litre tank. •A well-being check on a Lower Wynndel Road resident revealed the female was okay. •No injuries resulted in a minor rearender on Highway 3. •A male found sleeping on a bench on 11th Avenue North reported he was just waiting for his appointment at the nearby employment agency. •A complaint was received about vagrants near the library. Travelling fruit pickers typically congregate near the library to get free Wi-Fi for their computers or cellphones. •An intoxicated male was arrested and held overnight in police cells after causing a disturbance in a 33rd Avenue orchard. August 15 •An untraceable 911 call made from a cellphone was one of a half-dozen such occurrences this week. •Ammunition was brought in for destruction from an Okell Road residence. •A cherry-throwing battle between pickers was broken up at a Highway 3 orchard. •RCMP Const. Littlejohn led a short TSN-Kraft parade through Northwest Boulevard and Canyon Street. •An orchardist on 32nd Avenue was warned that his tractor needs lights if he drives on roads in use. •A street address sign on 25th Avenue South was knocked over by an unknown vehicle. •A small amount of what is believed to be cocaine was found at a Highway 3 service station lot, apparently having fallen out of its owner’s pocket as he got out of a vehicle. “If the owner would like to claim the package at the police station, we would be more than happy to talk to you,” Gollan said. •An ongoing problem about loud parties on Seventh Avenue North was referred to the Town of Creston bylaw department. •An elderly female on Fox Tree Hill was helped to relocate to a motel when she discovered bats in her residence. •An intoxicated male on 16th Avenue South was taken into custody and held until sober. August 16 •A Highway 3 resident reported losing a wallet somewhere between Vancouver and Creston. •A found wallet was returned to a grateful fruit picker. •When patrolling police spotted a vehicle running a red light on Northwest Boulevard, they stopped the driver and found he had been drinking. He failed a roadside screening test and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition. His vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

August 17 •Patrols were stepped up in the area after reports of excessive speeding on 20th Avenue South. •A driver reported to be tailgating another vehicle on Goat River Road apologized for his behavior. •A handicapped person who was found inside a locked vehicle on Cory Road was rescued by police, who broke a window to get him out of the hot vehicle. He was given first aid on the scene and pronounced to be OK. •A motorcyclist who attempted to take a Highway 3A curve too fast lost control of his vehicle and was taken to hospital in Creston for treatment of minor injuries. •Police were unable to locate an erratic motorcycle reported on West Creston Road. •A female driver was issued a verbal warning, though she denied driving erratically on Clement Avenue. •Police are investigating a dispute between neighbours on McDonald Street. August 18 •A female who complained about a child custody situation was found to be intoxicated and was transported to her residence. •A migrant worker was found to be intoxicated at the Creston and District Community Complex and was given a ride back to his campsite. •Police are investigating a complaint that a stucco surface of a residence on Highway 3A was damaged. •A male on 38th Avenue complained about receiving unwanted text messages from an ex-girlfriend. He was advised to turn off his phone. •Police agreed with a complainant on 11th Avenue South that the smell of burnt rubber was in the air, but they could not locate a source. August 19 •A wallet, apparently belonging to a seven-year-old named Trent Utah, was found and turned into the police station. It can be claimed by the owner. •RCMP members say they are very grateful to the local residents who came to their aid when they were confronted by a group of intoxicated and aggressive males at the community complex. Two of the males were arrested for being drunk in public and were held overnight in police cells. •A business’s window was smashed in the 1000 block of Canyon Street. •Police prevented a planned fight between two males, ages 16 and 18, on 16th Avenue South. •When police responded to a report of a dog in distress in a hot vehicle in a Cook Street parking lot, they found the dog was being tended to by the owner, who received a warning about the care of animals. •A vehicle blocking a driveway on 19th Avenue South was towed. •An intoxicated female was reported to be sending unwanted text messages to a 38th Avenue resident. •A foster child on Eighth Avenue South was reported to the appropriate provincial agency as a chronic runaway.

RDCK emergency plans outlined for town council BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Regional District of Central Kootenay emergency co-ordinator Alanna Garrett appeared before Creston town council at Tuesday’s regular meeting to outline procedures the Town of Creston is expected to follow in the event of an emergency. Garrett and Iain Bell, town engineering and public works director, explained to council that it would normally be responsible as a group for declaring a state of emergency, but that the mayor can act alone, on the advice of staff, if the situation warrants. “The number of emergencies (over 10) the RDCK has declared this summer is unprecedented in my 11 years in this position,” Garrett said. Emergency declarations are the first step in a series that must be taken so that local governments can apply for provincial emergency funds to offset costs. Most of the emergencies signed by RDCK chair John Kettle this summer were provoked by water-related events, including the mudslides at Johnson’s Landing on Kootenay Lake, which claimed four lives. Garrett said that states of emergency can include evacuation alerts and orders. An alert, she said, involves warning residents that they should prepare for the possibility that they should leave home. An evacuation order serves as a strong recommendation that all residents leave an area. Adults, she said, cannot be forced to leave unless they are impeding emergency personnel. Council Briefs •Chief building official Ross Beddoes told council that no permits for new residential construction have been issued in 2012, making this the longest period of inactivity in his decade at Creston Town

The report will be presented quarterly in the future. •Council voted to spend $150 for a local piece of art to donate to the annual Ducks Unlimited Canada fundraising dinner and auction on Oct. 13. •A public process will be initiated to invite comment on a proposal to revamp lots 1403, 1407 and 1409 Hillside Street into two lots and also to allow construction of a two-unit townhouse on one of the properties. •A request from the Friends of the Library to show a documentary film in Millennium Park on Aug. 23 was approved. •A request from a family to build a private columbarium to hold the remains of family members at Forest Lawn Cemetery has been referred to staff for a report. •The June report on downtown area parking compliance and usage once again indicates that there is no shortage of parking and that there is a low level of abuse of free twohour parking privileges. •The noise control bylaw is in the process of being amended to allow registered snow-clearing contractors to operate in the night when weather conditions make it necessary. •The council procedures bylaw is being amended to allow participation by telephone of up to two councillors at any one meeting. •The Friends of the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre Society received approval to close 15th Avenue between Canyon Street and Cook Street for a public street party and informational fair on Aug. 25.
CVWMA reopens Duck Lake dikes Advance Staff
Access to the southeast end of Duck Lake has been reopened, the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA) announced on Aug. 15. “After some maintenance today to remove excess vegetation that has grown up, it was determined that the dike had dried sufficiently and is stable enough to allow vehicle access at this time,” said an email sent by the CVWMA to interested parties. Parts of the wildlife area were closed in late June due to high water levels. The Summit Creek/ Leach Lake area and the trails

around the Wildlife Interpretation Centre were reopened to foot traffic earlier this month. The Duck Lake dike took a bit longer to dry out sufficiently, and while the CVWMA expects it to remain open, a close eye will be kept on it. “Please note that, as usual, there will continue to be ongoing inspections to ensure that the dike remains stable and safe for public access,” the email continued. “This spring was definitely an exception to the norm due to the extremely high water levels we’ve experienced; however, we’re cautiously optimistic that we’ve passed the crisis period.”

Rosacea Rosacea (also known as acne rosacea) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the skin, characterized by facial redness which may be persistent or recurrent in nature. Affecting an estimated 4% of the North American population, rosacea primarily affects Caucasians between the ages of 30 and 60 years. Most common symptoms include flushing of the face, especially around the eyes, nose and forehead. This can be accompanied by localized pain and throbbing. Some patients will also experience the appearance of small blood vessels near the skin’s surface, particularly on the nose, and the development of facial acne. Very rarely rosacea can affect the eyes, causing infection around the eyelids. There have been many possible triggers identified, which include emotional stress, exposure to sudden temperature

changes, the use of topical vitamin A creams, and the intake of alcohol and caffeinecontaining beverages. Spicy foods have also been shown to cause flushing in people with rosacea. Treatment of rosacea is usually limited to the use of the topical antibiotic metronidazole, or oral forms of tetracycline. These medications can be expected to produce a temporary remission of the symptoms, however they do not cure the condition. Laser treatment, which is used to eliminate the visible blood vessels near the surface of the skin, may be appropriate in some cases of rosacea. While the cause of rosacea is unknown, and there is currently no cure, it is a condition which can be effectively managed with medication, and avoidance of triggers, in order to minimize its effects on daily life.

Opinion Line Last week, I led into this column by talking about perfect moments â&#x20AC;&#x201D; those precious seconds or minutes that leave one smiling and wishing they could be quick-frozen and stored for future use. On a recent Sunday, a number of perfect moments stretched out and merged to last an entire day. The result was a restless night, sleep taking second priority to a mind swirling with gratitude. We awoke to the company of our oldest son and his wife, the sixth round of guests weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve hosted this summer, all of which we have thoroughly enjoyed. Evan and Kate are what I describe as low-maintenance people â&#x20AC;&#x201D; they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to be entertained and are the sort of folks who view holidays as a time for relaxation. And, like our younger son and his wife who visited the week before, they are comfortable in the kitchen and took pleasure in planning meals so their working mom and dad came home to wonderful aromas and a chance to sit and chat before dinner. We had reservations for lunch at Skimmerhornâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bistro at the Vineyards and, after a leisurely coffee, headed out to see if the new Wynnwood Winery in Wynndel was open. Unfortunately, we chose a rare time when the shop wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t open, so we took a quick look around, then decided to turn our disappointment into opportunity by visiting Galvanized Gallery, where artist Sandy Kunze shows her remarkable work to the public. Sandyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband, Dirk, left his long-time employer earlier this summer, so I have had concerns about whether two of my favourite people would be remaining in the Creston Valley. I was relieved to learn during a pleasant conversation with Dirk that he has landed an exciting job that will allow him to remain based in Wynndel. We wandered around the gallery for a while and Evan and Kate left with a beautiful pottery vase in

hand. Next stop: lunch. We started with a tasting, something I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t often do, because I drink the wines at home and at restaurants. But as we worked our way through the Skimmerhorn lineup I
lisher Karen Johnston, who came through in spades. Our seats afforded great views and excellent sound. Not having seen Dylan live I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really know what to expect. He has a reputation for being unpredictable, so we entered the arena open to just about anything, grateful that the opportunity had arisen for us to see the poet laureate of our generation only an hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drive from home. I started smiling during the first number and my pleasure only increased with each passing song. How does a music legend stay relevant and interested after 50 years of performing? In Dylanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s case, he hires exceptional young musicians and works with them to reinvent his songs. Many werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t immediately recognizable, the changes were so dramatic. He was clearly enjoying himself and I very much enjoyed the lack of patter â&#x20AC;&#x201D; there were no introductions to the songs, no anecdotes, no â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hello, Cranbrook!â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just two solid hours of fantastic, once-in-alifetime music. Could we understand all the lyrics? Of course not. Dylan is the master of mumble, not blessed with a clear, pitch-perfect voice. But I chose to hear the voice as another instrument and I loved every second of the performance. The Band, the Robbie Robertson-led group that backed Dylan in his early venture into rock music, would have been proud of this band, I commented. We drove home at a leisurely pace, tucking in behind a semi and happy to use the time to digest the experience of seeing a musical legend performing at such a high level. When we got home, I tried, between sips of a very nice whiskey, to explain to Evan and Kate what we had just witnessed. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know that I was very successful, but it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really matter. Being able to debrief in the company of family has enough. It was a Sunday that I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have traded for anything. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.
The perfect day This is the Life
Lorne Eckersley was impressed at how much more complex the wines have become over the years, the result of maturing vines and the winemakersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; comfort level with what sort of wines they want to make. Since it opened several years ago, Skimmerhornâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bistro has been a treat. Good food, good wine, good people and a spectacular view from the deck. This year, though, new chef Andy has kicked things up a notch, presenting dishes that are tasty enough to be memorable. I found myself unable to resist ordering the beef carpaccio appetizer and the seared tuna entrĂŠe, a combination I had been thinking about since my last visit. We sat on the deck, in the welcome shade of a tree on that hot August day, sipped our glasses of Pinot Noir and gaped in awe at the beauty of the Creston Valley. We would have been remiss had the view not served as a reminder of how much we have come to love this area since moving here 33 years ago. A few hours of relaxation back at home and Angela and I were off on our own for the evening, headed east to Cranbrook for our first ever Bob Dylan concert. As soon as the announcement was made that Dylan would be playing at the Rec Plex, I offloaded my quest for (paid) tickets onto Cranbrook Daily Townsman pub-
Train wholeheartedly without bias
Two weeks ago, the Lojong slogan was about including all aspects of yourself in your spiritual training: your body, your speech and your mind. This slogan expands upon that to include all aspects of your life as a family and community member. In Zen training, spiritual practice has two components: formal Zen training, which happens at the Creston Zendo and includes meditation and study of the Zen teachings, and mindfulness practice, which means working to realize spiritual principles in everyday life. Meditation is done alone; study is done in a group of Zen students. Mindfulness takes place in all our interactions with events and people. This slogan is based on seeing every aspect of your life as spiritual practice. It is about letting go of dividing your life into parts and of considering some parts spiritual practice and the rest time off. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about doing everything with the heart of spiritual intent. If you view spirituality as only something that happens at your place of training or worship, you are missing the point completely. Formal practice is great and it is important, but it is only a small portion of your life; the
rest is mindfulness, where you work with what happens after you leave the zendo or church and have to deal with the nitty-gritty of life, and with other people. That is where your spir-

ituality is put to the test. If you are biased and have fixed views about what one must do to have a spiritual life, it is easy to come up with all sorts of excuses as to why it is so difficult to practice an open spirituality that includes all people, objects and events. You can complain about all the obstacles you face, about how others who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have your own ideas about what spirituality is make it hard to live out the values of your spiritual training. If you approach your spiritual life in this way, circumstances for training outside formal practice are never quite right. Being without bias means that
there are no excuses. You do not declare any areas off limits, but you relate to your life as a single whole, a back-and-forth rhythm of meditation and mindfulness. When you are without bias, instead of waiting for the right occasion, you apply your spiritual principles on the spot, no matter what is going on, or who is present at the time. In that way your spiritual practice becomes more than a hobby or accessory â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it is a way of life. Practice Suggestion: The best way to develop a more wholehearted spiritual practice is by 1) spending time meditating and intentionally practicing mindfulness, and 2) memorizing a meaningful section of your spiritual teachings. In the next two weeks, focus on some aspect of your spiritual teachings that particularly strikes you. Write it out and put it on your mirror and then, bring to intentionally remember this teaching throughout the day. Notice when it comes up on its own. This column is a long series of short essays exploring the meaning of the Lojong Slogans. It is inspired by the work of Judy Lief. West Creston resident will mow anyway
To the Editor: (Re: “Neighbours too noisy”, Aug. 2 Advance, page 7) After the negative spin you put on your neighbourhood, Mr. Wuzinski, you may have trouble selling your property. Who would want to move into such a terrible area? I simply cannot imagine anyone being so rude as to mow his or her lawn on Mother’s Day. I take it that you are also opposed to people taking families to beaches or on fishing trips, where motorboats are being used for recreation. I am one of those who takes pride in keeping the weeds down and the grounds on our small acreage well groomed. Yes, and, if I must, I will mow my lawn on Mother’s Day, or any other day, for that matter! I will also water my lawn to keep it green. I don’t really care what you think or say! Until you sell your well advertised piece of property and move on, I wish you well. I do hope that you continue to enjoy the view. Oh, and by the way, enjoy your walk as you go to pick up your groceries or your mail or to see your doctor, if you must. After all, we can’t have motorized vehicles such as automobiles or buses adding to your discomfort, can we? George Esch West Creston

To the Editor: There have been several letters to the editor regarding the time zone in the Creston Valley. None of them have mentioned the fact that when we are on Mountain Time during the winter, the TV times are one hour later. I do not like that fact. I believe the Creston Valley should be on Pacific time year-round. I think that most people will agree with me. Who are the authorities who do not deal with the problem? Something wrong with med system
To the Editor: We live in a country whose medical system is envied. Recently, my experiences have left me wondering. At an emergency visit, I was asked to list my symptoms. Four hours later, I saw a doctor for approximately three minutes. He made the diagnosis from the symptoms I listed and told me that I did not need medication. A sign posted in the waiting room says an uninsured person pays almost $300 for an emergency visit. That makes the time I

saw this doctor worth $6,000 per hour. I stopped seeing “my” doctor at the clinic because I had had four appointments (each trip to the clinic is at least 110 kilometres return) for the results of X-rays. I was not told the results. The clinic staff told me that because I quit my doctor, I could no longer come to the clinic. A couple of years before this doctor, I had met a new doctor who told me to phone the clinic and get on the list for when the office opened. I had no doctor at the time I phoned three times in two weeks. The first two times the clinic staff said that they were not taking names. The third time, the clinic staff said that that doctor’s quota was filled. There is something very wrong with the delivery of our medical services. Whatever happened to the second opinion? DUC, are you willing to work with the valley? Do you plan to shut down Duck Lake like the CVWMA is telling people? I know you have a plan to get kids off the computer and out fishing. Bob Gollan might have been the only student in his Shellbrook, Sask., high school graduating class who didn’t think he was going to become a cop. “I always wanted to be a teacher, for as long as I can remember. When I attended my 25th high school reunion, all my classmates said they knew I’d become a police officer,” he laughs. “I said I always wanted to be a teacher, but they said they thought I’d be a policeman because I was always the one to break up fights. Of course that probably came from being sixfoot-four!” Born in Edmonton, Gollan “moved lots” as a child as his dad, a boilermaker, relocated often to find work to support his family. Moving established a pattern that would serve him well in a career that has caused him to uproot his family at least a dozen times. “I was attending university in Saskatchewan, preparing for a career in teaching, when I decided to join the RCMP for a few years and make some money so I could pay for the rest of my education,” he recalls. “I never did go back, obviously.” That was in 1982 and, 30 years later, his postings roll off his tongue as though each was just yesterday. “Stony Plain, Alberta. Gleichen, Alberta. Creston, well, you know where.” Kosovo? In May, 2009, Gollan went to work for the European Union (EU) Rule of Law Mission (EULEX), the largest civilian mission ever launched by the EU. Its central aim is to assist and support the Kosovo authorities in the rule of law, specifically in the police, judiciary and customs areas. “I got to train more than 260 police officers in European best policing practices and project management,” he says. “I was able to apply strategies based on my own experiences.” Kosovo was a dangerous area and for the first time his wife, Mary, wasn’t able to make the transfer with him. She was, however, allowed to meet with him in Europe during Bob’s year in the war-torn area.
“It was a great experience, and being able to take a bit of time and travel south to Rome and Athens made it even better,” he says. Throughout his career, Gollan says, he has set goals he’s wanted to achieve in each of the communities he has lived in. Once he sees his goals beginning to affect change, he starts looking for new challenges. “That’s my saving grace — I like taking on something new.” When asked to name some of his best experiences, he insists each posting has left a positive memory. “Stony Plain was great because it was a small community but close to Edmonton, which had everything anyone could want. Two Hills had a strong Ukrainian culture and I enjoyed learning about that. Yellowknife was a good-sized city in the north with close access to wilderness. Lutsel K’e offered fantastic hunting and fishing on Great Slave Lake. In Gleichen, with its population of Blackfoot Indians, I had a huge opportunity to learn more about

First Nations people and the issues that affect them. Here in Creston, my time spent on investigating marijuana grow-ops is a big learning curve, and we are enjoying the beautiful countryside, the lake and hiking opportunities so close by. And the people here are very positive and supportive.” Moving so often is a mixed blessing for families, Gollan admits. “My kids (son Stephen and daughter Chrissie) each attended five different schools. It made both very outgoing and very gifted in making friends and meeting new people. They still are in touch with friends they made in all three provinces and the Northwest Territories. “It’s been hardest on my wife, Mary, though. She has had to give up some very good jobs and career opportunities to follow me in transfers. It’s funny, though. For many years Mary was known as ‘Bob’s wife’. Then she started working for the Royal Bank, where everybody gets to meet her, and I’ve now become known as ‘Mary’s husband.’ ” Gollan gets involved in whichever community is living. In Creston, he’s become a member of the Creston Rotary Club, taken on the presidency of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats and is set to start coaching the Prince Charles Secondary School senior girls’ volleyball team next month. When asked if his Métis heritage has affected his career, Gollan said that for the most part it was a positive factor as it allowed him to work with the RCMP Aboriginal Advisory groups in Alberta and Saskatchewan and to help train other Aboriginal Members to effect positive change in their communities. This heritage is viewed with pride by Gollan as he has come to understand how important the First Nation communities were and are in shaping what is Canada today and what it will be in the future. Clearly, he has an affinity for First Nations people. Recently, he was at a local coffee shop when a man he had known in Siksika (just east of Calgary) entered the shop, immediately sat down and started talking to Bob as if he had just seen him the day before. “Would you ever consider coming back to Siksika?” the man
asked after their chat. “We miss you.” His office in the RCMP detachment, where he commands a dozen officers, reflects a passion for his First Nations connections. Scattered around the room, along with plaques commemorating his many postings, are a painted ceremonial drum, leather rifle scabbard, paintings with aboriginal designs, painted plates and a small replica buffalo, complete with fur blanket with the word Siksika painted on it, all gifts from communities he has worked in. Gollan is a man who clearly enjoys his work, but he admits that he’s seen a lot of changes in his 30 years on the job. “The court system has unquestionably changed over the years. It has become increasingly difficult to prove a case in court. It used to be that we could make four or five impaired driving arrests and charges in a single shift, including all of the paperwork. Now, if an officer has an impaired driving case, it takes an entire shift to complete the necessary paperwork. “Respect for authority of any kind has changed, too. Early in my career a police officer’s decision was rarely questioned. Now it happens all the time. Not that it’s necessarily a bad thing, but it is different.” He says small towns offer more positive responses from citizens than cities. “In a small community, I can still make a phone call to a parent whose kid has got into some trouble and hear, ‘We’ll take it from here,’ and know that they will take the appropriate action.” And it’s much easier to have a presence in schools than it was in his early years. When he first opened a school resource office in Stony Plain, the kids were a bit apprehensive having a police officer in the school, whereas now when he walks into a school the kids feel comfortable joking and talking to him when he is in uniform. Gollan says he has no interest in retiring before he has 35 years in. “This has been a fantastic career,” he says. “I’m almost scared to think about retirement because I enjoy my work so much.”
