A vocal salute Students visiting from Nelson’s sister city of Izu-Shi, Japan, took part in a formal farewell ceremony in Cottonwood Park on Saturday. The ceremony involved the mayor of Izu-Shi coming to Nelson to dedicate a plaque to recognize 25 years of the sister city agreement. The Grade 8 exchange students were in the area for a week and will now visit their other sister city, Hope, BC, before flying home. Sam Van Schie photo

Salmo RCMP, along with West Kootenay Traffic Services Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU), have released their report for the recent Shambhala Festival, which took place Aug. 6-14 on a 200+ acre private property site near Salmo. “The Shambhala Event Security group again this year has played an important role in dealing with attendees,” said staff sergeant Dan Seibel of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment of the RCMP. “This includes traffic control from Highway 3 into the site, inspecting vehicles entering the festival and resolving problems throughout the weekend. As in past years, the Security staff continue to be extremely helpful and professional throughout the event.” The Village of Salmo population is approximately 1,200 people and the Salmo RCMP has a regular staff of four officers. As with any significant special event, there’s a large number of out of town citizens arriving in Salmo to attend this festival. Attendance at Shambhala is limited to 10,000 people and there were over 1,000 volunteers, staff, entertainers and employees associated to the various music bands and commercial vendors and booths at the site. Most attendees travel to the festival via motor vehicle resulting in a considerable increase in traffic for area residents. “In an effort to keep area roadways safe, Police maintain a strong presence on the highways prior to, during and immediately following Shambhala,” said Seibel. “Numerous Traffic Road Checks, as

well as enforcement and patrols, were conducted within the Village of Salmo, as well as the surrounding roadways within the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment area, such as Highway 3, Highway 3A and Highway 6.” Shambhala 2012 was also marred by the first death in the 15 year history of the event. On Sunday, Aug. 19, 23 year-old Mitchell Fleischacker of Sidney, BC, died of an apparent overdose at the festival.

Curves has a formula for success

Business/Health

JIM SINCLAIR WKA Editor

The word “curves,” as related to the female form, says a lot. The name “Curves, in identifying what is described by the company as “The fastest growing franchise in history,” and “The world’s largest franchise,” says a lot more.

“Our membership ranges in age from 15 to 77.” Annette Cameron, Castlegar Curves manager

But talk to anyone who has reached a personal fitness goal through a program like the successful one at Curves, and you’ll hear the important story - that for someone willing to commit, the program can deliver results. Through the doors at the downtown Castlegar Curves location (1125 4th St.) is an island of positivity and support where clients can feel comfortable and encouraged. The local branch has been a fixture in Castlegar for more than 10 years. The current owner is Candace Stuckert and the location is managed by Annette Cameron, who became familiar with the place as a client. Cameron told the Castlegar News she’s sold on the environment at Curves. She

Annette has a long-time interest in numerous healthrelated pursuits, and saw Curves as a worthwhile outfit to get involved with. “Our membership ranges in age from 15 to 77,” she said, adding that there is a number

of women who have been around awhile at the local centre, nearing the 1,700 workout milestone. “Curves has provided me a comfortable, supportive environment in which I work to keep my body strong and my heart healthy,” says member Linda Henniger. “But, it’s also a place where I have forged friendships. For the first time in the history of the Silver City one of its own will be representing the province in the B.C Ambassador program. Carley Henniger, the Trail Princess from 2009, was dubbed royalty at the 2012 version of the show at the Merritt Civic Centre on Saturday. After a week-long competition the B.C. Ambassador program (BCAP) crowned three girls to represent the province, including Castlegar’s Mariah Morris and Kamloops’ Acacia Schmietenknop along with Henniger. “It was really stressful,” the 20-year-old Henniger said in Gyro Park on Monday. “All of the girls were really talented, and I was so surprised that I won.” But the win didn’t come easily. Henniger said the week was one of the hardest in her life, and it began on Aug. 17 with a speaking competition and talent showcase. That was followed by a three-hour knowledge test about the government, ma-

jor exports and sports teams, national parks as well as the geography of the province. On Aug. 18, all 14 candidates participated in personal interviews with the judges, modeled their gowns and participated in an impromptu questionnaire. “I was really worried for the threehour knowledge test because I don’t usually test well,” said Henniger. “But my grade was actually in the top

five.” In fact, Henniger placed in the top five for every category except for the talent show. “But that’s okay,” she said, while praising her competitors. “All of the girls worked so hard and I’m so glad I got to know all of them.” The aim of the BCAP is to nurture provincial leaders of the future, promote and assist with the expenses of post-

secondary education and to forge links of understanding and friendship throughout B.C. communities. Henniger is halfway through a double-major degree in political science and international studies at University of Northern B.C. (UNBC), which tied perfectly into the mandate of the program. Her efforts have not been ignored: Henniger will receive a scholarship at the end

of the year. “That’s why I want my reign and my title to represent all of the candidates and the past ambassadors. I want it to represent their commitment and all of their hard work as well. They’re my motivation for this year.” Henniger plans to return to the UNBC this fall, continue volunteer work in both Greater Trail and Prince George and she plans to attend more than 20 pageants to raise awareness about the BCAP over the next year, starting on Friday. “Prince George doesn’t have a program yet,” she said. “So I’d like to raise awareness about it up north and I’m going to help coach some of the girls in Trail while I’m back.” Henniger was pleased about the support she received from the community and expected to see the program flourish in the area. The BCAP is an annual event open to anyone between the ages of 17 and 23 who have previously held an ambassador title within the province.

Various acts are

scheduled for the Friday, Sept. 7 “Evening of Entertainment Extravaganza,” as well as for the Saturday Sour Dough Alley Stage entertainment. The show is expected to include many talented local singers, dancers, musicians, and a comedian will be announced at a later date. After attending the Kidney Walk for the last two years, Karen Fontaine will be able to participate in the walking portion for the first time. Over the course of the last two years that Fontaine participated, she was recovering from health problems ranging from kidney and pancreas failure to Riddle Diabetes to creating a Fistula and even Ielets. As a result, she could only fundraise money for the cause. On Sunday, August 26, the Trail Kidney Walk will take place in Gyro Park between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. The scope of problems that she suffered drained her so much that she doesn’t actually remember a lot of the last ten years. “I spent more time in the hospital than at home, she said. “But the pancreas transplant changed my life.

Walking routes for the Trail Kidney Walk 2012:

Fontaine received a call less than one year after her kidneys failed indicating that she could come into the hospital for the pancreas, but that the staff didn’t know if the organ donor’s kidneys could be used. “When I woke up, I was told that I got both, she said excitedly. “But I never had kidney disease very long. Some people have it for several years before they get a transplant. As a result, she spends a little more time at home. During kidney dialysis,

It is more symbolic -- it’s about getting together for a common cause re: kidney disease & organ donation awareness. she spent three days a week in the hospital for four hours each day so that her blood could be removed and cleaned. “By the time you start feeling better, you’re ready to start your next treatment, she explained. People living with kidney disease often have to spend as much as 15 hours each week on dialysis. It is difficult for people with kidney disease and their families. Route 2: From Gyro Concession to Bingay Bay Park - Sunningdale - then along Hazelwood Drive and loop around Marianna Crescent, down Hillside Drive and back to Bingay Bay and the Gyro Concession Stand. Facts: According to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, you can control your blood sugar with a few simple lifestyle changes. 1. Eat three meals each day, no more than six hours apart. 2. Try to eat at regular times, even if you have diayalsis. If you can’t stomach a meal, have a couple of light snacks available. 3. Avoid sweets, including sugar, soft drinks, deserts, jam and honey. 4. Do some physical activity each day. 5. Maintain your blood sugar wit advise from your doctor. 6. Consider adjusting your anti-rejection medications after a kidney transplant.

Salsa made with fresh, locally grown ingredients is so much tastier than the store bought variety and it can be a nutritious snack. Tomatoes are low

in sugar and calories and are a good source of vitamin C, potassium and fibre. They are also a great source of the antioxidant called lycopene, which is thought to help prevent prostate cancer. Lycopene is more readily absorbed from cooked tomatoes so cooking and canning salsa is a good way to preserve tomatoes for the winter months. The one nutrition downfall to salsa is that it can be high in sodium, but if you’re making your own you can control the amount of salt you use. Fresh herbs and spicy peppers pro-

vide so much flavour that excess salt is unnecessary. Here is a fresh salsa recipe that makes a great appetizer or can be served on fish or chicken.

Fresh roma tomatos make the difference.

2 cups fresh roma tomatoes, diced 1 red pepper, roasted and diced 1 cup black beans (optional) 1/2 cup red onion, diced 1/3 cup cilantro, chopped 2 limes, juiced ½-1 jalapeùo, seeds removed (use jalapenos as per your heat preference) 1 tsp cumin Salt to taste Roast the red pep-

per by placing under the broiler. Allow the skin to blacken and crack, using tongs to turn frequently. You want to blacken the skin but not burn the flesh. When the pepper is black on all sides remove from the oven and place in a paper bag or a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Allow the pepper to sit for at least five minutes before peeling off the blackened skin and removing the core and seeds. Chop the cooled pepper and the rest of the ingredients and combine with cumin and salt to your taste. Author: Simone Jennings is a Registered Dietitian with Interior Health.

Encouraging signs along the road to gender equality SUBMITTED

Statement by FCM President Karen Leibovici on closing the gap in women’s representation in municipal politics. Ottawa – The following statement was released Monday by FCM President Karen Leibovici on the recent successes and continued efforts to recruit more women to municipal councils: “FCM’s efforts to bridge the gender gap in municipal governments are achieving real results, one election at a time. British Columbia and New Brunswick recently reached the United Nations’ goal of 30 per cent as the minimal percentage of elected women required for government to reflect women’s concerns. They join the

Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut who reached this milestone on their way to parity. While women make up over 52 per cent of the Canadian population, only 25 per cent of the country’s elected municipal representatives are female. Canada ranks 42nd out of 189 countries for the number of women in politics. To close the gap between the reality in Canada and the UN target, 100 more women need to be elected each year from now until 2026. We have seen the next generation of women in politics. They are there and they are getting ready to run. It is our goal to provide them with the tools and long-term support they need to win.

This year promises to be even more exciting as municipal elections are held in no fewer than six provinces and territories: Yukon, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Prince Edward Island.

Canada ranks 42nd out of 189 countries in terms of the number of women in politics With support from Status of Women Canada, FCM has implemented a number of initiatives to recruit and train women to run in municipal elections.

A series of campaign workshops and campaign webinars, supported by a campaign manual, have been held across Canada with encouraging results: almost 40 per cent of the workshop participants have been elected. In British Columbia, where FCM offered five workshops, women now make up a historic 32 per cent of municipal councils. In New Brunswick, 44 per cent of women who participated in the New Brunswick workshops ran for municipal election, and of those, 74 per cent won. With this recent achievement, women now make up 30 per cent of municipal councils in the province. Later this year, a workshop will be held in Weyburn, Sask., and another in Iqaluit.

Our Protégée pilot program also connects young women interested in gaining the experience they need to run for municipal office with excellent mentors, such as Helen Hughes, this year’s recipient of FCM’s Ann MacLean Award for Outstanding Service by a Woman in Municipal Politics. The importance of engaging younger women in local issues cannot be underestimated. FCM´s Canadian Women in Municipal Government Scholarship program supports secondary school students who are taking their first steps on their school’s leadership team or student council. Whether we are addressing this important democratic deficit or the municipal

Back-to-school means back to morning crunch time SUBMITTED

New survey says breakfast a priority, skipped by majority While teary bedtimes or family dinners can make afternoons and evenings taxing for parents, it’s mornings that Canadian parents have declared the hardest. Six out of 10 Canadian moms and dads say morning is the most stressful period of the day, according to the results of a new poll conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Breakfast Cereals Canada. Morning time “thrival” “As a mom and a dietitian, I know how crazy and chaotic the morning can be,” says Andrea Holwegner, a registered dietitian and mother of one. “It’s important not to skip breakfast.

Eating well in the morning is easier – and faster – than many parents think.” A breakfast that’s high in nutrition doesn’t need to be high in stress. “Many breakfast cereals are an important source of whole grains and help kids meet their daily fibre recommendations – which otherwise isn’t so easy to do,” says Holwegner. The “me time” connection Not taking enough time to take care of their own needs also ups the stress factor for many parents. Among those who reported spending lower amounts of their time on themselves, 71 per cent say it’s the most stressful part of the day “Breakfast cereal is a delicious, convenient, nutritious

and economical option for busy Canadian families,” says Kathryn Fitzwilliam, Executive Director at Breakfast Cereals Canada. “It’s our hope that by understanding what’s causing parents stress in the morning and by providing some simple solutions to get the family involved in preparing a healthy breakfast, we can help them smooth out crunch time.” Think outside the box If you are looking for a change from cereal with milk, try one of these equally quick morning options, as featured in the Morning Crunch Time Thrival Guide at morningcrunchtime.ca: · Combine fruit, yogurt and cereal in a parfait glass. Spread nut butter on

a banana and roll it in your favourite cereal · Add bran cereal to a fruit smoothie to boost fibre content · freeze a batch of muffins or cereal bars using bran or whole grain cereal · Sprinkle high fibre cereal and fruit atop frozen pancakes or waffles · Make trail mix by combining cereal, nuts and dried fruit in a portable container · If you do need to dash and dine, bring a bag of cereal and a portable cup of milk. Cereal Facts An important source of whole grains. For many breakfast cereals, a 30 gram portion counts as one serving of Grain Products from Canada’s Food Guide.

And we’re off It takes Canadian parents an average of 77 minutes from the time they wake in the morning until they get out the door. · The great Canadian morning race: British Columbians spend the most time in the mornings getting ready (84 minutes); Quebecers spend the least (62 minutes). · Morning time isn’t “me” time: On average, parents spend less than half the amount of time on themselves than they spend on their kids in the morning. · Romance is dead (in the morning, anyway): Couple time gets the short shift in the mornings, with only 18 per cent of time being devoted to spouses or partners. -Breakfast Cereals Canada

infrastructure deficit, we know that our best results come when the federal government and Canada’s municipalities work together. Through our con-

tinued efforts and partnership with Status of Women Canada and Minister Ambrose, we can help municipalities reach not only the 30 per cent target, but equal representation for all citizens.”

After slow start forest fire season rolling 1,200 hectares, burning within a park. Near the Yukon border, 20 firefighters worked on the west and south flanks of a 3,500-hectare fire north of Dease Lake. In addition to the two large fires, the Northwest Fire Centre had seven new fire starts Sunday, sparked by lightning strikes, and reports of 12 abandoned campfires over the weekend. With hot weather through most of August producing high fire risk, campfires were banned last week in the Kamloops region. Other areas still allowed campfires as of Monday, but brush and stubble burning

B.C. forest fire crews are enlisting help from neighbouring provinces to battle a lateseason surge of fires. Most of the major fires are in the sparsely populated northeast corner of B.C., restricting the booming natural gas industry in the region. Yukon sent 79 of its firefighters to B.C. on the weekend, joining 20 from Saskatchewan and and 35 from Ontario. Another emerging hotspot is northwestern B.C., where communities were warned Monday of visible smoke along Highway 16. A fire near Morice Lake was estimated at

and other open fires are banned in most areas of the province. In the Kootenay region, the Brewer Creek fire south of Invermere was estimated at 30 hectares Monday. Started by lightning, the fire had 22 firefighters, three helicopters and four pieces of heavy equipment assigned to contain it. A 56-hectare fire on Skimmer Horn Mountain near the U.S. border was reported contained by Monday. The fire danger rating is high across most of the province with pockets of extremely dry conditions across the north, the western Interior and the Okanagan-Similkameen regions.

“Put on the coffee SUBMITTED

This September, if someone you care about is living with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, show your support by taking part in a Coffee Break event in your community. Coffee Break is the largest annual nation-wide fundraising campaign of the Alzheimer Society that raises money for local programs and services. Kicking off in B.C. on Sept. 21, this do-it-yourself fundraiser is fun and easy. It can be as simple as hosting a coffee party at home, in the office or at a public venue. Prospective Coffee Break Hosts will receive a host kit to help with their event. Supporters can also purchase coffee cup cut-outs from this

year’s sponsor, Bulk Barn, at various locations in Kamloops, Kelowna, Vernon and Cranbrook. The Bulk Barn head office and the store where the cut-out was sold will match every donation made on Sept. 21. The target goal for this year’s fundraising campaign is $1.5 million dollars across the country. “Increased funding for services is essential to meet the needs of the growing numbers of Canadians living with dementia, says Jean Blake, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “Having access to services can make all the difference in the way families live with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. To register and plan your Coffee Break event, visit www.coffeebreakbc.

Sculpture Talk

Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

‘Seedling III’ (painted steel) A tenured associate professor at Northwest Missouri State University for the past seven years, Glenn Williams specializes in teaching various classes relating to the sculpting process but is adept in others – Art Appreciation, 3-D Design and Sculpture as Public Art are other courses he has instructed. He is also an accomplished sculptor in his own right, with works on display in various locations across the midwestern United States. Williams’ sculptures tend towards abstraction, as evidenced by his entry in this year’s Sculpturewalk, ‘Seedling III’. Dramatically dark and elevated, a stylized seedling with juxtaposed projections - rising in graceful flourishes - is offset by counterpoints such as the angled circle below the centre of the work. “My intent always is to invite the viewer, as an observant participant, into a visual dialogue about perception,” says Williams. “With this and other works I aim to create a dialogue between forms and shapes – natural versus artificial, dynamic versus static – and capture the interaction or formal relationship.” ‘Seedling III’ is part of an ongoing series that includes a similarly styled installation in Columbia, Missouri. That piece graces the front of a local fire hall and was erected in May 2010. The city’s Percent for Art program chair praised Williams involvement with the immediate community, his technical prowess and the depth of meaning he conveys in the sculpture. It holds true for his entry here; what at first glance is deceptively simple takes on greater import and depth of meaning the longer it is appreciated from every angle.

“In my work I explore various elements of the human condition, particularly those aspects that impact our sense of identity and self awareness,” Williams notes. “I draw inspiration from personal experience and a variety of political, social, historical and literary influences to do so.” William’s stylistic range is impressive. Radically different from the Seedling series but created with the same intent is ‘Home Sweet Home’. Three windowless plywood houses sit in white-legged boxes, their uniformity ruptured

by a startling black intrusion: a set of wheels dangles from the roof of one, a ladder pierces another. It is currently exhibited at Franconia Sculpture Park, a public community undertaking located northeast of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. Always contemporary, Williams’ sculpture is both dramatic and subtle at once. ‘Seedling III’ will please the eye of the viewer while their brain contemplates the intent and decodes their personal interpretation of this engaging, thoughtful work of art. Horoscope Michael O’Connor

ffor th the

Week

August A u 24, 2012

Tip of the Week: Virgo is the sign mostly closely associated with health. Woven into this is the rhythms and patterns of one’s lifestyle. Genetic inheritance, environmental factors including our immediate living space, the social climate, and the air water and food quality are other factors contributing to our health or lack of it. Astrology is able to look even deeper and peer into karmic factors which mean conditions ‘inherited’ from past lives. Virgo is also linked to holistic health and healing. In its fullest scope ‘holistic’ implies a weave of the spiritual (karma) mental, emotional and physical. It has long been asserted that the physical body (earth) is where we see or detect issues, but these emerge from the more abstract realms of the spiritual (ďŹ re), metal (air) and emotional (water). So fundamental is the desire for health that the entire economy is signiďŹ cantly linked to it. This is partially why beliefs, facts and even laws are created and asserted to protect the interests linked to the business of health which of course includes medicine. When closely examined, most religions are fundamentally about a whole spectrum of beliefs, attitudes and practices linked to health and Virgo is the main zodiacal archetype linked to it.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

Balancing work and play is the call now. Creating beauty and harmony close to home is a central theme. You may notice you are moved to cover a lot of ground these days. Expect this trend to continue. The time is right to bring projects to completion as much as you can, especially over the next several weeks.

A busy and potentially prosperous cycle continues. This is activating you’re creative leadership talents. Communications are a central focus. Making connections with some signiďŹ cant power players is featured. If you are willing to do the work to expand, the time is probably right. Yet, you may need extra support to manage the growing demand.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

The focus is shifting to the home front. Security remains a central theme but you may not be sure what it means anymore. Questions about where you ďŹ t in the world may be lingering. You are willing to take some creative risks, but what are they? You may feel increasingly less patient. An important learning curve is approaching.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

A busy social cycle is yielding to a more relaxed pace. This shift will occur gradually over the next week or two. Taking a more selective approach with invites and initiatives will prove ideal, perhaps even necessary. Now is the time to recharge your energy levels before the next season begins. At least attending to things behind the scenes will match your mood.

A new sense of individuality is rising. Yet some old habits die hard and the most tenacious, perhaps with the deepest roots, may require extra attention over the next several weeks. You may have to be extra deliberate if you want to break through. The key is awareness of what these are. Decipher what ‘moving towards the future’ for you’re best advantage means to you.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

The seeds have been sown for your next great adventure. As with all true adventures, this includes entering the unknown. Words like trip, vacation or holiday are not apt synonyms, but ‘grand journey’ might sufďŹ ce. You are in the enthusiasm stage; hopefully you feel this way. By this time next month the tone will be more sober.

The focus of creating a more secure base shifts this week to work and health. Having too much or too little to do both represent imbalances and can be a source of stress. Either way, worry can be a consequence. Acknowledging worry is the ďŹ rst step to dismissing. Replace this reaction with a plan of action. Either remove items from your daily ‘to do’ list or add some.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

Taking stock of your talents, assets and resources is an emerging theme. These may include key contacts as well as what you your self have. Either way, deciphering where you have leverage is a ďŹ rst step to solution directed action. This may include clearing anything that is in the way. Above all, increase the scope and quality of you’re connections.

You will feel inspired to take new initiatives this week. These will include behind the scenes activity. Deciphering the direction(s) most worthy of your time will require some sorting. Yet, you should feel your energy levels raise noticeably. These spurred by ambitions or the spurs of a rising determination. Be willing to take risks to increase your inuence and/or afuence.

Entertaining deeper considerations of what you do and not want and need at this point is in focus. How to best give to yourself and others is woven into the plot. A rich if dramatic exchange of thoughts and ideas will take on added depth. Taking some key initiatives to place more emphasis on fun and play meanwhile will help to balance the scales.

Nurturing a more creative rhythm continues. Sharing ideas and cooperating more closely with signiďŹ cant others towards this end is an emerging theme. Since good health is its own reward, yet also boosts conďŹ dence levels, it is a very worthwhile focus. Healthy relations are another feature of this theme and the time is right to attend to your key contacts.
