Boat basin blockade planned

Debt pressure causing stress for students BY JENN M C GARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

Lease of downtown marina opposed by protestors BY CHRIS HAMLYN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Opponents to a proposed 30-year lease of the Nanaimo Boat Basin to Pacific Northwest Marine Group are taking their protest to the water. The Nanaimo Port Authority reached a deal with the Sidney-based company which proposes $9 million in upgrades to the 72-year-old marina. But marina users are concerned about privatization and a lack of public access to moorage. “The waterfront belongs to everyone, you just can’t gate it,” said Brunie Brunie, who is organizing a blockade of the Boat Basin Sept. 1. “We’ll be out there at the crack of dawn in our boats, anchored fore and aft and maybe put a line across.” The Protection Island ferry, fishing boats and small dinghies will be allowed to pass through the blockade, but the marina is off limits to larger, private vessels. Brunie plans to inform boat owners in the marina Aug. 31 of the pending blockade and allow them to leave. “We might inconvenience some people for a short time, but selling our harbour is a bigger inconvenience,” said Brunie, who is also hoping for an Occupy-type protest on shore as well. ◆ See ‘PORT’ /4

Debt is a growing concern for Rachel Dalton. By the time the 34-year-old Vancouver Island University student finishes her bachelor of business administration degree in December, she expects that between her and husband Andrew, who just finished his master’s degree in arts and history from the University of Alberta, they will have racked up about $150,000 in student loans. While doing well in school is a major concern for Dalton, the mother of three stresses out more about her financial situation and putting food on the table. “Am I going to be able to pay my mortgage?” she asked. “That comes before my grades. You need to worry about eating before you worry about studying time. Otherwise we wouldn’t have part-time jobs. I know some students who have had to drop out because they can’t afford [to pay for school].” She attends VIU full-time and also holds down a part-time job. Her husband always had at least two part-time jobs while he was completing his masters degree – he is now tending bar full time while he looks for a research position. A recent Bank of Montreal survey found that students are more stressed out about paying for school than achieving academic success. ◆ See ‘COST’ /5

THE NEWS BULLETIN

When a person can’t breathe on their own, they may not think about the cost of the hospital ventilator filling their lungs with air. Or someone having a heart attack might not know the defibrillator used to start a heart costs $16,000. Health-care professionals rely on these pieces of equipment during emergency situations, and for the past three years the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation has been working to ensure equipment is there when needed. Since September 2009, the foundation worked to raise $4 million to purchase equipment fo r t h e n ew e m e r g e n cy department being built at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. The foundation’s selfimposed fundraising deadline ends next year in June, but staff hope to reach the goal sooner. The generosity of service clubs, charitable organizations, individuals and corporate partners have allowed the foundation to raise $2.8 million in three years. “It is a tribute to the community in that they realize the importance of supporting health care in our community,” said Maeve O’Byrne, foundation president. “The more we can help the better the tools for the professionals when they need it.” The foundation is on the final push to raise the remaining $1.2 million. However, the ER isn’t the only funding priority the foundation has worked on during the past three years. It has also raised more than $540,000 for the new renal unit and money for palliative care and breast cancer diagnostic equipment.

CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Maeve O’Byrne, president of Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, stands in front of the new emergency ward nearing completion at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. The foundation is looking for more donations to support construction costs.

E m e r g e n cy d e p a r t m e n t construction is on schedule for completion next month with the official opening date still being finalized. The new 65,000 square-foot ER is triple the size of the existing department. The current ER was created to serve 15,000 patients, but served more than 54,000 in 2011. “It’s the busiest emergency department on Vancouver Island,” said Feron Walker, foundation director of communications. Anya Nimmon, a Vancouver I s l a n d H e a l t h Au t h o r i t y spokeswoman, said VIHA is grateful for the foundation’s $4-million commitment to purchase equipment.

“VIHA is proud to partner with the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation for this incredibly significant project,” said Nimmon in an e-mail. “The foundation, with the help of their donors, has made equipment available throughout the hospital and very soon the latest equipment will be saving lives in the new emergency department.” The ER’s cost of $36.9 million is shared among the provincial government, Vancouver Island Health Authority, the RDN and hospital foundation. The foundation has several fundraising events in the works, with opportunities for people to donate.

The annual Golf For Life fundraiser is Sept. 7 at Fairwinds Golf Club. Registration is $200 per golfer and includes 18 holes, a power cart rental, lunch and dinner and a participation gift. People can register online at www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com. The foundation will also start a household mailout campaign this fall, asking for donations. Telus is donating $25 to the hospital foundation for every new Nanaimo customer signing up for Optik TV or activating a smart phone. FR EE POOL ALL DAY EVERY DAY

Long-time arts editor Melissa Fryer was named the new editor of the Nanaimo News Bulletin Tuesday. Fryer started her career in the Comox Valley, after earning a degree in journalism from the University College of the Cariboo (now Thompson Rivers University) in 2002. Two years later, she joined the News Bulletin as a junior reporter, taking on the role as arts editor in 2006. Behind the scenes, Fryer took on some editing and layout duties, contributed to the paper’s editorial board and spearheaded the annual Pennies for Presents fundraiser. Fryer replaces Mitch Wright, who left the Bulletin earlier this month for a new role in communications at the University of Victoria. Although it’s a challenging time for the newspaper industry, FRYER with lower advertising revenues and readers migrating to online publications, Fryer said the goals of fair and balanced coverage remain the same no matter what the platform. Arts, sports and community news will still find a home alongside the harder news items, she said. Readers will probably notice little difference as Fryer takes the lead of an editorial team that won provincial and national awards for its reporting. Fryer, who was born and raised in the West Kootenay smelter town of Trail, said she loves the outdoor recreation opportunities like camping, hiking and kayaking that Vancouver Island offers. She also started a new hobby of adventure racing, participating in Warrior Dash earlier this year. Fryer can be reached at the News Bulletin by e-mail at editor @nanaimobulletin.com or by phone at 250-734-4621.

Cost concerns plague university students ◆ From /1 The survey found that 27 per cent are stressed about paying for school, 22 per cent were most worried about finding a job after graduation and 20 per cent were most anxious about achieving success academically. Steve Beasley, executive director of the VIU Students’ Union, said students who attend VIU tend to be disproportionately cost-sensitive compared with larger universities in big city centres. “A larger proportion of the population at VIU is sensitive to price and that drives their decision to study in their home community,” he said. The Canadian Federation of Students estimates the average student loan debt load when graduating from a post-secondary institution in B.C. is about $27,000. Money worries are top of the list for Rachel Dalton, with her 10-month-old son Max, and the reason why she has a part-time job while going to school full time and caring for her family. A new survey finds that the top concern for many students is their financial situation, not their grades.

that figure rises to $34,000. Beasley said academic success and financial burden are inherently tied – if a student does not have enough money to pay for university and living expenses, the student must work and the more time spent working, the less time is available for doing school work. Even when it appears someone has left school because of bad grades, he said financial woes are often the root problem.

Two Nanaimo families will be living in homes they can call their own, hopefully by Christmas. Jo-Anne Graham, a single working mom, with her son Raymond, 14, and Kerry Sawchyn, his wife Laura and their son Tyler, 2, were selected recently to be the future owners of a duplex being constructed by Habitat for Humanity MidVancouver Island at the corner of Hecate and Prideaux streets. The new home will be a place where Jo-Anne and Raymond can feel secure, compared to the housing complex they have resided in since 2007. “ W h e r e we l ive right now we’ve had some security issues,” Jo-Anne said. “There was an incident where some guy was loose in our complex with a handgun.” Jo-Anne and Raymond will not only feel safer in their new

Habitat for Humanity homes are designed to keep heat, cooling and other operating costs low for their owners by incorporating energy saving designs and technologies – the new duplex takes energy conservation a step further than previous builds. “This is our first built-green project, fully certified LEEDs gold-rated duplex that we’ve ever done,” said Teresa Pring, Habitat chief executive officer. More money is still needed to complete the duplex construction. Boat blockade over-dramatic It’s natural to be concerned when an outside entity takes over a local treasure, and Nanaimo’s Boat Basin is no exception. Recently, the Nanaimo Port Authority announced that Pacific Northwest Marina Group will take on a long-term lease and rejuvenation of the Boat Basin, and PNMG has said it will pump $9 million into much needed upgrades. Those upgrades will CALLS FOR include enhanced security, high quality floats, better protest services and improved need to be access for people with based on solid mobility issues – all of information, which are welcome. But what Nanaimoites not rumours. really need is the assurance the Boat Basin will remain accessible to all boaters, not just ones with the deepest pockets. Fishing vessels, especially, need to be given a prominent and permanent berth in our basin. Nanaimo’s harbour has been and always should be a working harbour, and the people and industries who laid down those roots should never be cast aside. There is fear growing that just that may happen, so some locals have decided to establish a blockade and deny visiting pleasure boats entry or exit from the Boat Basin. This may not be the best approach. A blockade will not only harm Nanaimo businesses that rely on boater traffic, but the city’s tourist reputation as well. Word carries quickly in the boating community, and the proposed one-day blockade could have much longer lasting consequences. Before circling the wagons, more information needs to be extracted from the port authority and PNMG. As it stands now, it has been stated that all are welcome in the Boat Basin. The day that changes is the day the Jolly Roger should be flown.

mental changes have been sweeping. Steve Thomson, minister of the newly amalgamated forests, lands and natural resource operations ministry, points to the urgent efforts to upgrade the government’s detailed picture of the state of the forests, so it can consider new cutting, planting and fertilizing efforts. But, there’s no denying that he came to the job in a crisis that will take more spending in the future, and he will have a hard time finding it as Finance Minister Kevin Falcon looks to balance the books for the 2013 election. If nothing else, the pine beetle epidemic has forced the B.C. government to consider some of the intensive forest management that we hear about in Scandinavia, one of those places that supplies B.C. with wood furniture. And it has prompted renewed interest in offering new forest tenures to aboriginal communities with unresolved resource claims. Under current law, the government can only award new forest tenures to aboriginal communities. So part of the committee’s proposed solution is to “expedite negotiations” with the Burns Lake First Nations to give them a chance to harvest some of the marginally economic forest areas that remain. ◆ Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Downtown less attractive

To the Editor, Re: A city’s vibe is its biggest attraction, Opinion, Aug. 18. Last February my family came out from Calgary to visit me. This was the first time they visited me since I moved to Nanaimo 16 years ago. My family stayed at a hotel downtown. They ate at almost all the downtown restaurants. They visited all places to see downtown, including the museum, the Boat Basin, Old City Quarter and the parks. They loved it. They especially enjoyed the food, but they also liked walking through the old streets finding interesting architecture, colourful shops and quirky little monuments.

I have to admit, my family’s wide-eyed enthusiasm reminded me of why I moved here. When I go downtown I see the colossal failure of the conference centre. I am still rankled by the loss of valuable historic buildings in Maffeo Sutton Park. I am bothered by the hideous residential towers. To my mind, downtown Nanaimo is an unfinished destination. A collection of foolish decisions, lost opportunity and unrealized potential. All of this my family, gleefully, overlooked. I feel frustrated because, since I got here, we have made downtown less attractive to ourselves. We visit downtown

less and less. Some people who have lived in this city all their lives visit downtown as often as my family. Some come downtown only when they have to. Some fear coming downtown. Some, like myself, just forgot to appreciate what is good about this place. The “vibe” of any city emanates from the heart of a city, and is created by its citizens. We are the “vibe,” and we are not in the heart of our city. Once we get our downtown to a point where we can all enjoy being here, you can be sure visitors are going to love this place even more. To the Editor, Re: City gauges scientific interest, Aug. 21. Seems like we are spending money when cutbacks are being required across all governments. And yet we come up with ideas that are great but will require funding and continual maintenance into the future. To spawn the idea that our youngsters require additional scientific learning tools outside of the school system may not be a beneficial idea. By union contract, a science centre may be another unrecognized teaching or extra curricular venue. If we were to build a science centre in Nanaimo it should require the endorsement of usage by both the teachers’ union and the school board. We already have two government-funded scientific operations in the city that could work with the community in the same manner without dotting the landscape with another building. The biological station and the university both currently have studies that could be shared with the community in regards to biology. Our money may be better spent on something we already have. And if they do

not have the room, then look at the many vacant buildings in the downtown core. There are absolutely dozens of vacant public and private spaces available including our glorious convention center. Alternatively, I can see a salmon hatchery (similar to Nile Creek) being promoted in Bowen Park and the returns on the investments would be positive. But before we do something like that we need to address the polluted upstream and downstream runoff drainage from both residential and commercial properties and streets. Our continual ignorance of accidents could kill our investment similar to what happened in Goldstream Park. Safeguards on our Bowen Park investment will require more than what an insurance company can provide on paper. Runoff filter systems are available and cheap. If not, we can make our own – it is not rocket science. Matt James Nanaimo

Credit card issue requires explanation To the Editor, Re: New CEO a ‘superstar’, Letters, Aug. 21.

If A.J. Hustins’s assessment is right about Sasha Angus, the new CEO of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, it sounds as if Angus will not need a ferry to get to downtown Vancouver – he should be able to just walk across. There is one glaring discrepancy in regards to the credit card affair with Angus and the Alberta government. The auditor general and the head of the Treasury Board are both quoted as saying the $30,000 credit card bill was not paid until at least six months after Angus left government, and then it took some ‘warnings’. The report in the News Bulletin quotes Angus as saying the debt was paid before he left government. Which statement is accurate? The credit card issue may be several years old, but the claim it was paid before leaving government was made within the past few days. It matters if the statement is true or not. Driver arrested for road rage Nanaimo RCMP hope the public can help with its investigation into a road rage incident on Brechin Road on the weekend. A 65-year-old man from Surrey, driving a 1998 blue Volvo, was trying to return to the Lower Mainland and allegedly got upset Sunday shortly after 4:30 p.m. when he learned there was a three-sailing wait to get on a ferry at the B.C. Ferries Departure Bay terminal. Police were called after B.C. Ferries traffic controllers asked the man to move his car and he refused. An officer explained to the driver he would have to leave and come back a few hours later as there was no more room for cars. The man then allegedly steered his car onto the sidewalk and drove off when the member asked him for his licence and registration. When the officer caught up with him on Stewart Avenue and tried to arrest him, he allegedly put the car in gear and tried to drive off again. Concerned for the public’s safety, the officer jumped into the car and put it in park as more officers arrived to help take the man into custody. Anyone who witnessed or happened to record the incident on video is ask to call Const. Tim Bedard at 250-7542345.

Man stabbed at Westwood Lake trailer park

I

VICTIM TAKEN to hospital for injuries.

One man has been taken to hospital with injuries following a stabbing

incident at a trailer park in Nanaimo. The incident happened at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, in the 2300 block of Arbot Road in the Westwood Lake area, when a witness called police saying he saw one

man was trying to stab another man when he went to investigate noises in the trailer park’s communal club house. Police arrived at the scene and arrested a 60-year-old man who is

a resident of the trailer park. A second man, also a resident of the trailer park, was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police have no further information about what led to the assault or about the relationship between the men involved, but said more details will be made available as the investigation continues. TELUS STORE OR AUTHORIZED DEALER

Climate change deniers almost extinct Most North Americans know humancaused global warming is real, even if political leaders don’t always reflect or act on that knowledge. According to a recent poll, only two per cent of Canadians reject the overwhelming scientific evidence that Earth is warming at alarming rates – a figure that may seem surprising given the volume of nonsense deniers (many of them funded by the fossil fuel industry) spread through letters to the editor, blogs, radio call-ins and website comments. Polling indicates more deniers live in the U.S., but they still make up just 15 per

not volcanoes. The most likely cause is humans spewing massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, mainly by burning fossil fuels. This isn’t news to most climate scientists. As evidence builds, deniers are starting to change their tune. They once said global warming isn’t happening, and some claimed the world is actually cooling. Now, heat records are being broken worldwide – this past decade was the hottest on record. Many scientists say the situation is even more severe than first thought, with temperatures increasing faster than predicted.

Faced with the evidence, many deniers have started to admit that global warming is real, but argue that humans have little or nothing to do with it. Muller’s study was just one of many to demolish that theory. Our climate has always changed, and natural variation is part of that. But scientists have long known carbon dioxide and other gases trap heat in the atmosphere. Recent warming is occurring at an unprecedented rate that corresponds to burning fossil fuels. According to NASA, global average temperatures have been rising significantly since the 1970s, “with the 20 warmest years having occurred since 1981 and with all 10 of the warmest years occurring in the past 12 years.” North America just experienced the hottest July on record, and the first seven months of 2012 were the warmest, on average, in more than 100 years.

This evidence has caused some deniers to change their tune again. Yes, the Earth is warming, they say, but whether it’s from natural or human causes, we can’t do anything about it, so we might as well continue with business as usual, maybe employing technological fixes to help us adapt. There’s also a subset of deniers who see some nefarious conspiracy in climate science and “Agenda 21” (a nonbinding UN agreement on sustainable development) to impose a world government or something, but their irrational arguments aren’t worth the time of day. The truth is, as most of us know, that global warming is real, and humans are major contributors mainly because we wastefully burn fossil fuels. We also know solutions lie in energy conservation, shifting to renewable sources, and changing our patterns of energy and fuel use, for example,

by improving public transit and moving away from personal vehicles. Scientists have been warning about global warming for decades. It’s too late to stop it now, but we can lessen its severity and impacts. The side benefits are numerous: less pollution and environmental destruction, better human health, stronger and more diversified economies, and a likely reduction in global conflicts fuelled by the rapacious drive to exploit finite resources. We can all work to reduce our individual impacts. But we must also convince our political and business leaders that it’s time to put people – especially our children, grandchildren and generations yet to come – before profits. ◆ Written with contributions from David Suzuki Foundation editorial and communications specialist Ian Hanington. www.davidsuzuki.org r

Traffic at the site will be reduced to single lane alternating flow for much of the day as the bridge is constructed. The public can watch the work being done in real time at www.nanaimo.ca by clicking on the ‘I want to ...’ tab and then the ‘learn about’ tab. Mongard said the project remains on schedule to meet its Oct. 31 deadline. Along with the bridge, an 800-metre stretch of Bowen Road is being converted to four lanes to better handle the estimated 16,000 vehicles that travel through the corridor daily. Turn lanes will also be installed so drivers can access nearby businesses safely. The project, which began in March 2011, is one of the most expensive road work projects in the city’s history. Work begins on the crux of the Bowen Road expansion project today (Aug. 23) as the Island’s largest construction crane moves into place to install the new Quarterway Bridge deck. The former 12-metre bridge, the trigger for the entire $11.1-million project, has been disassembled, paving the way for the new span, which will be 18 metres long and will have a profile 1.5 metres higher. Jan Mongard, project manager, said a 275-tonne crane will be lifting 12 bridge girders into place throughout the day to install the new deck. “It’s huge, but cranes this size are common in the industry now as opposed to 10 or 20 years ago,” he said. “Technology on bridges have developed and the efficiencies are the key. I

NANAIMO MAN featured on television show.

BY MELISSA FRYER THE NEWS BULLETIN

A Nanaimo man and his collection of antiques will be featured on a Canadian television show about modern-day treasure hunting. Rodney Pohl and the items he accumulated as part of his antique store came under the gaze of the hosts of Canadian Pickers. While they found a bunch of stuff to buy, they found even more that they liked, said Pohl. “They maybe saw about five per cent of what I have,” Pohl said. “They’re talking about coming back again.” Pohl’s collection stems from his antique store, Cabin Fever, that he closed after health problems cost him his leg. He suffered a broken leg, which required a bone graft, and a superbug infection set in, requiring amputation of his leg. His health is better now, but he still has a two-car garage and more filled with items from the former store. “I had a private collection and I just opened an antique store,” Pohl said. Pohl’s house guests called the show after they saw how much stuff he accumulated and producers were soon in contact. “I said I’ve got thou-

sands of items,” Pohl said. “They were there eight days later.” Canadian Pickers is a show about two men looking for treasure among the country’s junk. They go into basements, attics and storage facilities to find the gems, buy them and resell, hopefully for a profit. Some of the items were simply too valuable for the show. Pohl owns a large collection of First Nations art work, including a blanket with thousands of abalone shells, original drawings from a famous fashion designer, plus a cabinet made as a wedding gift for Queen Elizabeth. The company commissioned to make the furniture made two, so that if catastrophe struck the first, they had a backup. One is in the Queen’s possession in Britain while the other belongs to Pohl. The collection is sitting in storage and Pohl would like to sell it to pay bills and make a donation to charity, but he finds the size somewhat unmanageable. “I’d really like to find a way to be free of it all,” he said. “I’d really like to sell it all and move on with life.” Pohl’s episode of Canadian Pickers airs Monday (Aug. 27) at 8 p.m. on the History Channel. To contact Pohl about his collection, please call 250-754-8870 or e-mail rodneypohl1@gmail.com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

the kind that draws attention and elicits empathy for his story. That story is Fear Factor: Canine Edition, a beautiful monologue about the unconditional love he felt for his dog, Abby, – and the love and loyalty he received in return. Grady recounts their adventures in dog yoga and rehabilitation of sick and injured hospital patients and contrasts that with his human interaction and relationships.

Although Grady held nothing in his hands and his only costume was his impeccably tailored suit, his description through intonation and movement brought Abby to life. You could see the soft black fur and her inquisitive eyes. You could feel her happiness and her pain. Grady tells a lovely story that anyone with a heart will relate to. – Melissa Fryer ◆ See ‘NANAIMO’ /19

Nanaimo companies featured at fringe theatre festival ◆ From /15 The Cult of Brother XII Child of a Hoodlum Productions Based on Nanaimo’s favourite cult legend, the musical recounts the last days of Brother XII’s reign, using a fictional trio of reporters to help uncover the truth by going undercover. The Brother XII legend is nothing short of a storyteller’s dream, complete with religious fanaticism, fraud, infidelity and a mysterious woman with a whip. The original songs and dances were ably performed by the cast of local actors, who took their legendary characters over the top to make a memorable show. Major highlight: Bill Miner as Brother XII’s psychiatrist. It’s slightly gratuitous but most definitely hilarious. – Melissa Fryer Chaos and the Cosmos Dramarama Ross is awaiting the return of the inter-

dimensional Great Ones. His sister, Sharon, just thinks he’s crazy. The two share a typical sibling lovehate relationship. I couldn’t stop laughing at the brilliant quips between the two actors, with Sharon calling Ross an ‘idiot’ and Ross spouting off about the Great Ones’ love of elevator music and enchiladas. Yet, behind the joviality a deeper struggle lingers. Ross is content working at the gas station, after leaving his engineering job. He’s carefully planning for the return of the Great Ones while spreading word about them on his blog, when his life is impacted by his sister’s return home. Sharon harbours insecurities and is unhappy about how her life turned out. As Sharon continues to try and convince her brother the Great Ones are a delusion, she starts to realize more about her own inner turmoil.

The chemistry between the two actors was great and this is a play I’d see again just to leave the theatre high on laughs. – Rachel Stern Cardboard Robot Honestly Entertainment That was it? Cardboard Robot ended too early, but maybe that was the point. The play leaves it to the audience to form whatever conclusion their imaginations can create. Nick, a secluded scientist, builds a robot in his basement. His only other companion is a mail carrier, Bernadette, who delivers parts. The witty banter between Nick and his creation keeps the audience entertained. But between the light hearted laughs Bernadette bares her soul and shares the story of visiting her mother. Nick tackles the dilemma of deciding how much intelligence his robot will possess. He teaches his creation, Isaac

Nick’s wisdom of the world is exhausted and he must make a choice about Isaac’s existence. During the play I was slightly dis-

tracted by the near millisecond echo of the hidden actor doing Isaac’s voice, which was rebroadcast with computer enhancements.

But the minor diversion didn’t take too much away from the amusing conversations between Nick and Isaac. –Rachel Stern

Veterans set pace at training camp I JR. A HOCKEY veterans will be counted on.

V.I. Raiders use victory to improve BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

As the Nanaimo Clippers start setting their goals for the coming season, they know improvement has to come in a few different areas. One of those areas is from within – the returning veterans will be counted on to be leaders at this week’s training camp, and beyond. “I don’t think anybody earned a lifetime contract with the Clippers based on our results of last year,” said Mike Vandekamp, the team’s coach and general manager. “All of our returning players left here [last season] with a clear understanding of what their challenges were going to be through the off-season to be ready for this year.” At Monday’s fitness testing, 37 players went through eight different physical challenges, and the top five performers were all returnees – Trevor Fitzgerald, Jared Chinn, Kyle Kramer, Mason Blacklock and Brenden Forbes. Fitzgerald said he tried to be a leader that day, and again the next morning at the first skate, when everyone was still a bit sore from the previous day’s rigours.

All you can do is just lead by example.

“This practice [Tuesday] I was skating as hard as I could,” said the team captain. “That’s basically all you can do is just lead by example.”

He suggested that there are no “guaranteed spots” set aside for veterans. “So I’m trying to prove myself out there as much as anyone else, and show that I did put in my time over the summer and I worked hard and I’m ready to come back as a leader of this team,” Fitzgerald said. He said he liked the pace at the first practice, and said there

seems to be more size this year. “And we’ve got big guys that can skate, too, not just big slow guys,” he said. He said Vandekamp will demand high energy at the practices and at the series of evening scrimmages. “That’s what we’re looking for, is physical, fast-paced games and guys working hard,” Fitzgerald said.

The V.I. Raiders were winners on the weekend, and they enjoyed it. But they don’t always want to be in the position where they have to merely hang on for a one-point victory. Nanaimo’s Canadian Junior Football League team was immediately trying to take lessons out of Saturday’s thrilling 30-29 win over the Okanagan Sun at Caledonia Park. Matthew (Snoop) Blokker, Raiders coach, said one of the reasons why his team was successful was because it stuck together. Players supported their teammates and coaches coached rather than yelled, making for a positive sideline. “Our spirits are high, and the fact of it is now we can see the difference between sticking together and falling apart,” he said. Mike Schaper, Raiders receiver, said the win over the Sun creates momentum, but said his team needs to pay attention to both the positive and negative plays in that game. “We got the win, we played hard, we played like brothers, we came together,” he said. “But at the same time we had a lot of mistakes, obvious mistakes … There’s always room to improve.” Ashton Galloway, Raiders running back, said his team was rewarded for keeping hope and sticking together. ◆ See ‘TEAM’ /B2

TTeam on ‘right track’ ◆ From /B1 “It’s definitely going to put us on the right track and make us realize that we have a lot of work to do,” Ashton Galloway said. And the Raiders are willing to take the “long road,” said Rockenson Angrand, defensive back. “We’re going to let it come to us,” he said. “We’re just going to take it one game at a time, stay focused, stay consistent. It’s going to be a long journey but we accept that.” Matt Blokker said he expects his team to return to the practice field energized by last weekend’s thriller.

“We’re not afraid to work hard and I think right now you’re going to see the tempo of this team go up,” said the coach. “That’s how you start to build a swagger and that’s how you start to feel good about coming to practice and practice starts to become fun.” GAME ON … The Raiders (2-0-1) face the Kamloops Broncos (1-2) on Saturday (Aug. 25) at 7 p.m … Dom Abassi will call the game live via free webcast at www. viraiders.ca … The Raiders then have a bye before their next home game Sept. 8 versus the Chilliwack Huskers. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Buccaneers set goals, expectations at training camp

I

JUNIOR B HOCKEY team entering its inaugural season. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

David Osborne handles the puck during the last practice of Nanaimo Buccaneers junior B training camp Sunday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

The Nanaimo Buccaneers have a better idea, now, of how they might be able to navigate their inaugural junior B hockey season. The city’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League expansion team held its training camp this past weekend at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. “I thought the kids came to camp in pretty good shape which is important,” said Brad Knight, coach of the Buccaneers. “It gives them the best

opportunity and I’m not trying to decide if they’re good and talented but lazy, or good and talented.” With an expansion team, he expected to have a young group, but after seeing how the young players carried themselves this past weekend he believes many of them will be able to step right into the lineup and be contributors. In fact, he was already suggesting the Buccaneers can take a run at the North Island Division title. It’s a possibility because the coach thinks he’ll have a wellconditioned group with a willingness to compete hard. That competitive spirit, Knight said, will serve the Bucs well in tight hockey games. “We’re not here just to hang

out and participate,” the coach said. “We want to win this year, we want to win next year, we want to win the year after.” That message, he thinks, got through to the players during training camp. “We worked on work ethic and commitment and we talked about do’s and don’ts and I think we’ve established lines of respect and communication … and what it is we’re expecting,” said Knight. ICE CHIPS … Many players from Buccaneers training camp are now attending junior A and major junior camps to see where they’ll end up this season … Nanaimo’s first preseason game is Aug. 31 when it hosts the Oceanside Generals at 7 p.m. at the NIC. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Youth Sticking Together, the group trying to break the record for the world’s longest street hockey game, is hosting its car wash/bottle drive at University Village mall in Harewood. Proceeds benefit the B.C. Children’s Hospital, Kids Help Phone and the Nanaimo Curling Centre. The V.I. Raider Girls dance team is hosting its car wash/bottle drive at the Mid-Island Co-op gas station on Bowen Road. Both fundraisers go from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Former Mariner wins beach gold A former Vancouver Island University Mariners volleyball player is a national champion on sand. Maverick Hatch and his teammate Sam Schachter won gold at Volleyball Canada’s Beach Nationals last weekend in Vancouver. Hatch and Schachter beat a Toronto team in the final 19-21, 21-16, 18-16. Another former VIU Mariner, Jamie Broder, teamed with Kristina Valjas to win bronze in the women’s competition.

Redmen gain ground

Are all drunks alcoholic? Is total abstinence the only way to regain control of your life? If your drinking has become a problem, think about this. Alcohol is rarely the real problem; it is just the way we choose to cope with our real problems. Why not fix them instead? Misuse of alcohol does not make you an alcoholic. Only 3% of us are born alcoholics, and another 3% become alcoholics through years of practice. Many others go through problems with drinking, and go on to become social drinkers for the rest of their lives. I help many people do this in as little as three months. If you want discreet, private help with your problem behaviour, whatever it is, call me for a free, confidential assessment. Get the help you need to change your life – today.

The Nanaimo Redmen might be a bit inconsistent these days, but it’s only the pre-season, after all. This is the time of year when the team can work to develop that consistency it seeks. The city’s midget football team went winless in its exhibition jamboree Sunday at May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park, tying the Cowichan Bulldogs 6-6 and then falling 12-6 to the Coquitlam Falcons. “I’m not really happy that there wasn’t distinct improvement, which there should be,” said Sean Roden, Redmen coach. Nanaimo was better, he felt, in a pair of road exhibition games the previous weekend, a 33-26 win over the Chilliwack Giants and a 32-30 loss to the Meadow Ridge Knights. Those games might

To the Editor, How do you begin to thank everyone who made the 2012 National Dog Agility Championships one of the best events of this sort ever hosted in Canada? Competitors and volunteers came from California, Michigan, Washington, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Our Facebook page is full of competitor and volunteers comments praising this event and how much they enjoyed the Beban Park facility, their stay in Nanaimo, our volunteers and event organization. Comments such as “your volunteers are amazing” never ceased for the four days of the event. You could always find a volunteer in those neon-yellow

APPLAUSE shirts. They sat in competition rings, sat at security stations, were moving about on various errands, all in 30 C degree temperatures in order to help everyone and be everywhere. Most of the 220-plus volunteers came from Vancouver Island. We tried to take care of them, but they took even better care of us. Thank you so much, you all were phenomenal. We also want to thank all of our sponsors. Without them, we couldn’t have made this event the huge success it was. Our organizing committee is all volunteer and the event was non-profit. They went that extra mile for this event and we express our gratitude for it. Ilona Linterman nationals committee member

Three-in-one fundraiser supports children, youth A local youth group is hosting a three-inone fundraiser at University Village Mall in Harewood Saturday (Aug. 25). Youth Sticking Together’s barbecue/car wash/ bottle drive takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot near Shoppers Drug Mart. Proceeds benefit three charities – B.C. Children’s Hospital, Kid’s Help Phone and Nanaimo Curling Centre’s youth program. This is the first fundraiser planned in advance of the 2013 Longest Street Hockey Game Aug. 9-13. In June, the group attempted to beat the Guiness World Record for longest street hockey game by playing for 105 hours and 17 minutes non-stop, but organizers ended the game at the 50-hour mark due to a rash of injuries. Soon after, the board decided on a second attempt next year. On top of the world record attempt, the group managed to raise $6,000 through various fundraisers over the past year, which was divided between Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Vancouver Island, Crimson Coast Dance Society and the Harewood Youth Ball Hockey League. The group hopes to exceed that total leading up to the 2013 world record attempt. For more information about upcoming fundraisers, please go to www.youthstickingtogether. com.

A MASSIVE BOUQUET OF ROSES to two men in the city's public works department. We discovered a leak in our main water pipe, called the city and within an hour, Troy arrived to pinpoint the problem. We needed further explanation and later that day, Troy returned with Gord. Cora in the office was also helpful. A BEAUTIFUL BOUQUET OF RED ROSES to our friends Connie and David, who supported us when we discovered a leak in our main water pipe and assisted in a partial repair until the plumber came the next day. A HUGE BOUQUET to Tim Wait, who went above and beyond to make a weekend so special. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. A HUGE BOUQUET OF ROSES to Carol from Nanoose, who assisted three ladies after the Charley Pride concert at the Port Theatre. We would love to connect with you. E-mail us at arbie075@gmail.com. A HEARTFELT THANK YOU to the two kind gentlemen who assisted my mom when she fell at Brooks Landing. Also thank you to the lady from Nanaimo Insurance Brokers for offering your assistance. Mom is OK other than some scrapes and bruises. Your kindness and concern was appreciated.

Nanaimo News Bulletin Thursday, August 23, 2012

A LARGE BOUQUET to the many residents of Nanaimo and Lantzville who support the Friends of Pioneer Forest in its quest to save the land for everyone to enjoy in perpetuity. A BOUQUET OF THANKS to the Kiwanis Club of Nanaimo Sunrisers and Balloons and Bears Florist for all the smiley mug floral arrangements they sent to the residents of Dufferin Place. You brought smiles to a lot of faces. A GIANT BUNCH OF SUNFLOWERS to the many thoughtful drivers who stopped to offer assistance to the senior standing in the sun beside the car she locked herself out of, especially the young woman who contacted my daughter to bring a spare key.

A HUGE BOUQUET of thanks to Ross, Heather, Chris and especially Paula at Nanaimo Chrysler. I love my Beetle and the service is awesome. A HUGE BOUQUET OF ROSES to Econo Car Centre for getting us into a reliable van for less so my hubby can start work. We appreciate your kindness and will pay it forward.

A BIRTHDAY BOUQUET to Zikora for donating his birthday money to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. Children helping children – it doesn’t get any better.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR to the new medical clinic in Woodgrove Centre. It was nice to be greeted by such welcoming front end staff and have my medical needs properly dealt with by amazing doctors. I will definitely be returning.

A HUGE BRIDAL BOUQUET OF THANKS to Marsh & Son Jewelry Service for doing a superb job of re-stringing my pearls. I can now give this family heirloom, with pride, to my son's fiancĂŠe to wear on her wedding day.

A HUGE BOUQUET OF THANKS to Dover Bay Secondary School's prom committee 2012, which recently presented proceeds from its fundraising to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre.

BOUQUETS OF SHAMROCKS to Fibber McGee's and bartender Mike for such great hospitality during a coworker's going-away party. Slainte.

A BOUQUET to the planners of Nanaimo's trail system. It's worldclass

A HUGE BOUQUET to Gord Shoquist and his family for their assistance at Gord Bush’s celebration of life. It was most appreciated during a difficult time.

A BEAUTIFUL POST OF NATIVE FLOWERS to Anneke and Peter Van Kerkoelre, Country Grocer, 49th Parallel, Superette Foods, the Running Room and Bill and Donna Konsorado for providing the place, food, shelter and atmosphere for the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust’s 12th annual picnic. More flowers to all the volunteers who worked through the heat of the day to make this event happen. BOUQUETS to the new owner and staff at Speedy Auto Service on Terminal Avenue. Your service and honesty is fantastic. I will be back again and again. A HUGE, HAND-BLOWN GLASS BOUQUET to Broco Auto Glass for the great work on our SUV window and the above and beyond clean-up job. You guys rock. A HUGE BOUQUET to A&B Alternators and Starters in Cassidy. Thanks for your honesty and integrity. My “unrepairable starter works better than new.

A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER BOUQUET to Christine for helping me with my drapes. I am so grateful that you showed up when you did. A HUGE BOUQUET OF THANKS to Gerry for installing my new clothes line. Your kindness is appreciated. A GRATEFUL BOUQUET OF COLD WATER to all the Vanderleek Roofing employees who worked so hard under the hot sun to give my house a splendid new roof. A BOUQUET to those who beautify this world through art, music, poetry F to those who and literature. A BEEF contribute nothing but second-hand smoke and toots. A FURRY BEEF F to the wellmeaning but misguided lady who "saved" a baby seal. You are interfering with wildlife, which is a serious offence. It is sad, but that seal was abandoned because its mother could not feed it. A ROTTEN PEAR to the person who stole the pear tree, plum tree, wheelbarrow, shovel and soil from the community gardens at Beban Park. May you enjoy the fruits of someone else's labour. Please at least return the wheelbarrow and shovel.

A CAUTIONARY BEEF. Check out the Better Business Bureau rating of real estate companies before buying/selling a house or building. It just may save you a mountain of headaches. A BEEF F to the salesman who ordered the wrong vehicle for me and after it arrived – four weeks after the promised date – didn't even apologize for his mistake. A BEEF F to the bank teller who on numerous occasions has been rude to my elderly mother-in-law. You need to learn how to treat the elderly and you shouldn't be in the customer service field. A WANDERING BEEF F to the people who hold garage sales and don't take down their signs when they are done. You've frustrated the fun of my 10-year-old and are basically littering. A LEAFY BEEF F to the beefer ridiculing people who live in trees. There is nothing wrong with living in trees or bushes. They offer shade, shelter and food. Some people leave the comfort of their expensive houses to go and live in the trees. It's called camping. You should try it. A SWEATY BEEF F to the lady who left her dog in her car while she ate lunch with her daughters. She put a cone on the dog because he was barking out the window and trying to stay cool. Let's lock you in the car and throw away the keys. A BIG BEEF to the hospital that left the gauze in my friend. No wonder he was in pain. Shouldn't staff ensure that everything external is removed before stitching a patient up? A BEEF F to whoever is supposed to be taking care of the grass at Swya-lana Lagoon. People from all over the world come to enjoy the park and take pictures and all the grass is brown. A BEEF to having no beef or other food to eat. Welfare is making me choose between eating and my pain. There is no mechanism in place that exempts people from payment for medical marijuana.

This Week’s Winner ELIZABETH BYERS wins a bouquet from Turley’s Florist.

A BEEF F to Nanaimo transit. You should focus on cleaning bus shelters, you are wasting money by replacing the benches instead.
