He plans to move the building and sell the southern area as an acreage or possibly as a rental property. The request was approved by council. Councillors also approved a request from J.W. Rodenburg to rezone 15-acres to country residential hobby farm from agricultural. Located on Secondary Highway 795 and Township Road 432, the application states the land is not suitable for farming as 50 per cent is wet swamp. The last request was from Don and Althea Lewis to split an acreage into two parcels on Range Road 243 north of Highway 53. They want to change it to country residential from agricultural as there are two buildings on the one property. Cutforth said the change would not affect any farmland as it is already with two buildings. The request was approved. Land use bylaw request A request from Alvin Brockhoff returned to council as it was tabled July 17 to give the applicants time to discuss
parcel size options. A quarter section of land on Township Road 452 and Range Road 25 was requested by Brockhoff to be split equally among three brothers who had inherited the land. Brockhoff, speaking on behalf of the brothers, said most of the land is tree covered and they agreed each brother should take an equal share. The proposal is to split each parcel north and south so as to have access from the east/west road, which Dave Brockhoff feels is safer as it is less travelled than Range Road 25. The request was approved. Summer Village of Parkland Beach Council was asked to send a letter to the Summer Village of Parkland Beach, which is working on improving its beach area, stating the county’s support of its application to expand its beachfront. With recent development in the area, Cutforth feels it is something the village needs. “They’re just looking for a letter of endorsement for their application to (Alberta) Environment of Sustainable Resource Development,” he explained. Council approved the request.

For those fortunate enough to travel to Europe this summer, or even some of North America’s older cities, take a good look at the train stations. They reveal much about architecture and cities, but also provide a clue to hisMark Milke toric regional economies Troy Media and the preferences of past travellers. On a purely visual level, some stations are works of art. For those familiar with New York City, consider Grand Central Station, built in the golden age of rail travel and decorated with Tiffany glass and French sculptures. Toronto’s Union Station, with its classical beauxarts style, is a beautiful place to connect. When it was opened in 1927 by the Prince of Wales, the future British King commented that “You build your stations like we build our cathedrals.” Such train stations were constructed before buses and airplanes replaced trains as the default choice for mass transit, and long before the car further hastened that trend. You can dislike that development — I prefer dense, packed cities and used trains extensively when I lived in Japan — but one cannot un-invent automobiles, buses and airplanes. Nor can you get around the plain fact of how much sense the automobiles make for much intercity travel in much of Canada, especially for families. Still, some would attempt to use massive taxpayer subsidies to try and restore rail’s golden age. Thus the occasional suggestion that taxpayers finance high-speed rail between Calgary and Edmonton or in southern Ontario. Even if you like trains, that would be a substantial misallocation of resources and run against the grain of traveller preferences. To understand why, consider a 2008 report prepared for the Alberta government on high-speed train options for the Edmonton-Calgary corridor. The authors, TEMS/Oliver Wyman, noted 10 million passenger trips took place annually between Edmonton and Calgary, with 91 per cent made by automobile, six per cent by air and three per cent by bus. The TEMS report forecast that even with the fastest high-speed train option used — and at a cost of $20-billion — only seven per cent of all passenger traffic on
the corridor would use passenger rail. That’s 700,000 people annually. That’s a fraction of the passenger flows at Calgary and Edmonton airports, which annually serve 13.1 million and 6.5 million passengers respectively. Of course, those airports serve more than just the Edmonton-Calgary corridor. But that’s the point: airline service long ago eclipsed trains (and also passenger ships) as the preferred, cheaper and faster way to travel on most medium to long-haul trips. It’s not that rail isn’t desirable in densely packed locales, such as in Japan, elsewhere in Asia, or in parts of Europe. But, contrary to the claims of high-speed rail proponents, these things are not net contributors to the economy. They are also not net contributors to the tax base — quite the opposite. In 2009, the director of High-Speed Rail at the International Union of Railways said, with the exception of two routes (Paris-Lyon and Tokyo-Osaka), all highspeed rail systems are subsidized. In 2010, the World Bank noted how governments should contemplate “the near certainty of copious and continuing budget support for the (high-speed rail) debt.” A study just released in June by the University of California, Los Angeles, and which looked at Japan, found even there, “high-speed rail simply moves jobs around the geography without creating significant new employment or economic activity.” Even conventional rail is costly. In the case of VIA Rail, a Crown corporation, since 1996 the federal government has provided it with $4 billion in operating and
capital subsidies. It is thus fanciful to expect high-speed rail could be built and operated without large taxpayer subsidies, be it in southern Ontario or in central Alberta. In contrast, airports in Canada, most of which have been based on a user-pay model since the 1990s, are no longer a drain on governments. Airports instead directly contribute to the public treasury through rents paid to the federal government, which owns the land. (That would also be a useful model for any improvements to train service and station upgrades, as toll roads are for highway improvements, at least where gas taxes don’t cover highway costs.) Which brings up another summer observation: In some cities, airports are the “new” train stations, reflective of many people’s preferences, and as a destination for money and ambitious architects. Perhaps the best Canadian example is Vancouver International Airport, which is spacious, well-designed, and has an international terminal that is visually stunning with eye-catching “candy,” from totem poles to waterfalls. To be sure, even that airport doesn’t rise to the architectural magnificence of Grand Central Station or Union Station. But it and other airports do provide a clue about the priorities of today’s travellers and travelrelated commerce. there are basically two scenarios that could play out when it comes to the loonie’s future value: Scenario #1: Sunny skies. Europe somehow manages to get its act together and avoids a major banking meltdown. The euro currency holds together. Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal are in for a difficult decade of slow growth and recession, but they manage to hang with the euro currency. The U.S. and China avoid major downturns and demand for commodities hold up. Investors lose some interest in the traditional safe havens like the U.S. dollar and gold. Under this scenario, the riskier currencies such as the loonie do well and appreciate against the U.S. greenback. Canada’s relatively good fiscal position attracts investment dollars. Given this, the Canadian dollar would rise back above par and trade in the $US1.02 to 1.07 range. Scenario #2: Stormy weather. Europe can’t squirm its way out of its mess and Greece and Spain default. The euro currency loses members and banks collapse. The U.S. dollar soars as the only remaining safe haven for investors. Recession grips Europe and
the U.S. and China are dragged down. Interest rates remain at rock bottom, including in Canada. A global recession pounds commodity prices. Oil hits $US50/barrel. Base metals, potash and gold are also smacked down. Under this scenario, the Canadian dollar gets sideswiped in the wake of a strong “flight to safety” in the U.S. dollar. The loonie is volatile and falls to the range of $US0.85 to 0.95 — possibly lower if it appears the global economy is headed for a prolonged recession. So what is it going to be? Sunny skies or stormy weather? Scenario #3: It’s probably a bit of both. This means we’ll see the Canadian dollar stumble around its current range for a while longer, but chances are it will hover close to par this fall and will trade slightly above par in 2013. Teacher indulges her hobby at Beatty House By Amelia Naismith Rimbey’s prominent historic site, the Beatty House, is being looked after in part by a teacher and selfproclaimed history enthusiast this summer. Melissa Hambly works for the town and shares the house and information booth duties with the house’s other employee, Brianna Buist. Hambly is at the house two days a week. When she isn’t at the house, Hambly works at the town office. “I just help out with clerical work.” Hambly is a teacher and in the fall will look for a position. “I’m on the sub list,” she said. Driving by the house, Hambly always had an urge to go inside, but until she started working there she’d never had the opportunity. Once she started work Hambly fell in love with the house’s ornate diamond windows and its fireplace. “The fireplace is petrified wood, not stone, which is pretty rare for that time because that (petrified wood) wasn’t manufactured. Somebody
had to go out and get that.” The Beatty House was built between the years 1924 and 1925. “People see the house as an information booth,” said Hambly. “They’re surprised the house is a historic house that’s provincially protected.” Hambly uses people surprise of the house’s history to give them tours, her favorite aspect of the job. “History is kind of a hobby of mine.” “There’s still a lot of questions we don’t know, not so much about the house but about the family,” sad Hambly. Jack Beatty, who lived in it with his wife, Violet, until he died built the Beatty House. Even with giving tours for up to 15 people a day Hambly says the house can get lonely. She says many people don’t realize the grounds of the house are open to the public for thing such as picnics. The grounds can be used on whim without contacting the house first. Hambly says if people decide to use the grounds, just to make sure they use the trash cans too.

It is hard riding and straight shooting that counts. The fastest competitor with the fewest penalties and missed targets (balloons) wins. Cowboy mounted shooting is growing in popularity. It is a fastpaced equine sport involving horsemanship and shooting skills. “It is expensive to get into. Everyone needs the proper equipment (including horse and gear and equipment), and their restricted firearms license and transport permit, as well as a membership in a mounted shooting club,” says Gail Cook from Bentley, “but the sport really is growing.” The sport has only been in Canada for about six years but in some areas of the United States since the Nineties. This is the second year for the newest club in Alberta, the Wildrose Mounted Shooting Society (WMSS). At the shootout Aug. 11 at the Bentley Fair & Rodeo, there were 14 contestants who ran three stages (rounds) each, up some in numbers from last year. The overall winner and winner of division 1 was Lee Stuckey from
Bentley, John Townsend from Breton was second. In division 2 Gene Stuckey from Stettler captured first, and Kendra Sinclair from High River second. Twyla Stuckey from Stettler won division 3, and Ken Wick from Crossfield took second. After completion of two stages of Shotgun Shootout, Cam Fleury from High River was top, and Kyle Townsend from Breton second. Contestants also came from Magrath and Rimbey. Harry Foley helped out as the announcer at the last minute when the regular announcer was called away. The Bentley Ag Society donated toward prize money and Velocity Hydrovac donated toward the Blindman Valley 4-H who were the balloon runners putting out the balloons on the course for each contestant and picking up the pieces afterward. The range master, who had made sure all the rules were followed, was Gail Cook from Bentley. On Sept. 1 and 2 at the Rimbey shootout, members will get their last chance to try to qualify to go on to the finals Sept. 28 to 30 in Nampa, Idaho.

Busy at horseshoe courts By June Norvila One of the biggest horseshoe tournaments in the province was hosted by the Bentley Horseshoe Club on the fair and rodeo August weekend with more than 40 different competitors from all around Alberta and some from Saskatchewan competing over the two days of competition with weather perfect for play. The special Allan Boettger Memorial VIP Award, an annual presentation started last year, went to David Kilbourn from Red Deer, for his total involvement in the sport, his volunteerism, sportsmanship and promotion, and caliber of play. There were nine different classes in singles play on Saturday, more classes than there has been for a number of years. Winning placings follow: Men’s A - Ray Madu from Leduc, second Fred Lochner. Men’s B - Wade Katzmarzyk from Sylvan Lake, second Erv Callin. Men’s C - Cliff Miller from Red Deer, second Kyle Berlino.

There were around 55 entries and they included six juniors who entered exhibits. The judge this year was Gail Booth from Rimbey. Four drunk drivers arrested by RCMP in five days Last week the Rimbey RCMP responded to more than 45 calls for service. The highlights — or lowlights — include impaired driving and the theft of copper wire. Thefts from town, county and business RCMP have received complaints of thefts from both town and rural areas, including bikes stolen from a yard in town, as well thefts from unlocked vehicles. RCMP are also investigating an internal theft from a business in Rimbey. Four suspected drunk drivers arrested Impaired drivers were targeted last week with four arrests. On Aug. 10, a 67-yearold male from Rocky Mountain house was found impaired well driving. He was also on conditions not to consume alcohol and was suspended from driving as a result of a previous impaired driving conviction. He is
facing several charges and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. On Aug. 12, a 30-year-old male from Bentley was arrested for impaired driving and provided samples of his breath that were over three times the legal limit. He was charged and had his licence suspended immediately until the matter is resolved in court. His vehicle was also impounded for three days. A 25-year-old Hinton man was found to be stunting his vehicle at a local campground on Aug. 13, and the investigating officer found the man was intoxicated and arrested him. He provided samples over twice the legal limit, he too had his vehicle impounded, licence suspended and is facing a court date. On Aug. 14 a 46-year-old Lacombe woman was extremely fortunate, as she had
passed out behind the wheel and came to rest on the boulevard of the oncoming lane, without colliding with anything, or more importantly, anybody. When the investigating officer arrived the woman was still passed out. She was charged with impaired driving and refusing to provide a sample of her breath. Her vehicle was impounded and licence immediately suspended. All four of these people have had previous impaired driving related incidents. Elder abuse alleged Rimbey RCMP also are investigating several family disputes, including one where a son has threatened to come and kill his father. The father has alleged that the son is causing him to be the victim of elder abuse. The son, upset over this allegation, felt the only thing to do was to prove his dad right
RCMP focus on impaired driving in August Throughout the month of August, RCMP and other law enforcement agencies from across Alberta, continue with their patrols in a continuous effort to ensure our roadways are safe from impaired driving. Impaired driving continues to be one of the leading preventable causes of death. Drivers who choose to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol not only put themselves at great risk, but also threaten the safety of everyone else on the road. “If you knew of a proven, effective way to save lives and prevent injuries, would you subscribe to it, would you pay attention to and follow all the messages, would you change your behaviour and adhere to it?”
Shootout shorted in newspaper coverage Dear Editor: I find it very confusing that two events going on in the town at the same time — the 200foot shootout and the rodeo — can receive such very different coverage in the paper. The parade and rodeo were covered on 21/2 pages in colour, while the 200-foot shootout had one lonely black and white picture on the second to last page. While the town would argue that the 200-foot shootout was not a town event, I would bet that the town benefited from the people that attended. And the Rimbey Review is a community newspaper and covers surrounding area news, so I would have thought they would have covered an event on the town’s doorstep. The turnout at the 200-foot shootout was phenomenal. Too bad the paper didn’t report that. Way to go Central Alberta Raceway. Aaron Schaff

During August motorists will continue to see increased police presence on our roadways including several impaired driving Check Stops to enforce the new drinking and driving legislation, as well as to educate motorists. “RCMP, like all Albertans, want our communities and roadways to be safe for everyone and we are doing whatever we can to save lives,” LeMay added. If you’re planning a night out, getting home safely must be part of that plan. If you suspect an impaired driver, do the right thing, pull over and call 9-1-1.

Mounties get their copper wire thief Rimbey and Breton RCMP have stepped up patrols in rural areas around Iola Road and out toward Highway 22 after numerous copper wire thefts. As result of these patrols, RCMP apprehended a suspect as he was stealing copper wire. Murlin Becker, 29, of Buck Lake, was charged with theft over $5,000, mischief over $5,000 and failing to comply with conditions. The investigation of copper wire thefts is ongoing and more offenders are being sought. Residents are reminded to be vigilant of vehicles coming and going from lease sites and to report any suspicious vehicles. Golfers support seniors with annual FCSS tourney By Amelia Naismith Golfers teed up to support Rimbey’s seniors. Rimbey’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) second annual Charity Golf Tournament generated approximately $15,000 in proceeds. Profits will be donated to the seniors’ programs of the FCSS. Executive director Peggy Makofka says with the baby boomer generation aging, seniors’ programs
are going to be more important than ever. The FCSS board believes while programs are available through the government, the research process to find the right program for their needs can be difficult to navigate. “There’s a lot FCSS can do . . . but there’s so much we can do with a little amount of money,” said Makofka. The tournament was held at the Spruce Haven Golf Resort in Bluff-
ton. After a power breakfast of bacon, pancakes, French toast, orange juice and champagne, among other things, the golfers teed off for their 18-hole game of pasture golf. “It was really picturesque,” said Makofka. The golf course had been set up with flowers and open barbecue tents for supper and some of the themed holes. One hole featured celebrities, as Makofka called them. They were actually employees of Buist Motors who would take the shot instead of the golfer, for a small fee. There was also an insurance hole, where golf-
ers could pay to carry their ball across the water, and a shrimp and caesar hole. Golfers could sample shrimp and buy a caesar to go with it. This hole was set up in partnership with the Rimbey Kinsmen Club. “Everybody loved the shrimp, it was really good,” said Makofka. The evening wound down with a loonie auction, live entertainment by Trish Matthews and Terri Boyce, and door prizes. “I think most everybody got a little prize of some sort,” said Makofka.

Western quilting retreat offers camaraderie, tips By Amelia Naismith Ponoka’s annual quilting retreat attracted 63 women, ranging from beginners to master sewers, from across British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan for four days of quilting. “Some of them are new, some have never been to a retreat before,” said host Kathleen Mennell. The retreat started at 7:30 a.m. each morning from Aug. 13 to 16 and the sewers would work on individual projects until 10:30 at night at the Ponoka Legion. There were two show and tell nights where the sewers were able to show up to three projects and tell their stories. “You get everything form very basic sewing to very elaborate quilts,” said Mennell. “There’s a real diversity of project ideas and it becomes your family after a while.” Home economist Veronica Longmuir, who’s also the owner of Veronica’s Sewing Supplies, travelled from Kindersley, Sask. to show her wares. Longmuir has been running her store for 33 years and it’s the longest running single proprietor store in Canada. She was one of four vendors and according to her and Mennell, it’s an achievement to have all four at the retreat in Ponoka. ‘This is a huge retreat. The food is excellent. I really like Ponoka people,” said Longmuir. Before she had her store, Longmuir was a home ec teacher. “I had a great home ec teacher, she inspired me.” When she retired she needed something new. “And then I thought it’d be great to have a store.” Some sewers at the retreat have been sewing and quilting most of their lives, such as Lois Nysetvold, while others, like Darlene Pfahl started much later. Nysetvold stared sewing when she was 11 years old. She once took her sewing machine in to be serviced and saw an embroidery machine. Form there her love of embroidery grew. “I embroider. I quilt because I love to embroider.” Nysetvold has two sons whose shirts she embroidered over and over again. She eventually needed something else to do. “I’m not typical of the people here.” Nysetvold lives near Lloydminster and a mutual friend helped introduce her to Mennell. It normally takes Nysetvold three months to finish a project but more elaborate ones can take up to a year. “It’s not like a job. I do it for fun.”
Pfahl took sewing in school until Grade 12 but it wasn’t until she retired from her Grade 2 teaching job that she got into quilting. “I had some home ec friends and I said I’ve always wanted to quilt.” They helped Pfahl cut the pieces and she did the sewing. Without their help, Pfahl says she wouldn’t have been able to do it. “But then I was hooked.” Pfahl likes making lap quilts better than the fullsized ones, like her first quilt. “It’s smaller and knowing myself I’d get it done.” Pfahl likes quilting because it can be a social hobby. Mennell believes it can also be a charitable one. Mennell created a wall hanging for the Slave Lake Fire Department. Despite the social aspects and tips and greetings flying across the room, the retreat can be hard on the sewers’ bodies. Many wore supports to save their shoulders and backs, and a registered massage therapist was on site to give half-hour massages. Quilting and sewing can also be hard on the wallet. Four women who attended the retreat each had a machine that cost $1,000. One also brought 600 spools of thread with her.

Submitted Meghan Cameron and the girls Alberta peewee baseball team won gold at the Western Canada championships. Cameron hit a grand slam in the second inning, propelling team Alberta to a 6-1 lead — and they never looked back. She had tried out for team Alberta in July and made the cut out of 50 girls. Cameron plays with Rimbey Minor Ball during the season but has been asked to play in the fall league in Edmonton. Her dad and mom, Dean and Janice Cameron, are proud of her dedication to the sport she loves. Baseball is their family passion. In addition to her great experience, Cameron was the bat girl for team Venezuela at the Women’s World Cup of Baseball in Edmonton. She was excited to be chosen to represent Canada at Telus Field during the tournament. She practiced with the team, went to games, was in the dugout and attended extra off-field dinners and functions with them. The language barrier was interesting but they used a lot of hand signals to talk to each other. ‘The Venezuelan team is very nice and friendly, and loud on the field. They’re very vocal when they play baseball, a lot louder than in Canada, which makes it interesting as well to listen to them,” Cameron said.

Tyson at Summer Send Off Canadian country music icon Ian Tyson joins CCMA award winner Gord Bamford and Joe Diffie as they are added to the final line up of performers for the second annual Summer Send Off Music Festival, Aug. 31 to Sept. 2 at the Ponoka Stampede Grounds. “In his duel life style as an international singer/ song-writer and working rancher, Ian has dedicated his life to a strict regimen of dedication to both careers,” said Tyson’s manager, Paul A. Mascioli, president of Mascioli Entertainment in Orlando, Fla. “He loves Alberta more than any other place in the world and has demonstrated this time and again in his songs. His music has allowed Ian to be a successful rancher and his ranching and beloved horses have inspired him to become a musical historian of the west.” Gord Bamford, who was also added to the final roster of singers, says he’s honoured to be able to share the stage with Tyson at the festival. “I have always held him in high regard, and it’s a really special moment to secure him to play at the festival. I know that the Summer Send Off offers the perfect venue for him to connect with many Albertans who love him and his music.” The Festival begins with a Kick-Off Party on

Student players learn SWAT volleyball skills By Amelia Naismith Volleyball players for the Rimbey area got the chance to learn in-depth skills from University of Calgary Dinos players and alumni in a new volleyball program; South Western Technical Volleyball clinic (SWAT).
One of the coaches, Sammy Fraser, says the goal of the program is to reach out to smaller communities. “Its not always economically feasible for some of these kids to go to bigger cities such as Edmonton or Calgary,” said Fraser.
With SWAT, Fraser says higher levels of coaching are introduced to the players instead. “It’s on of our flaws as a national program, the kids don’t have educated coaches always.” She’s noticed in tournaments smaller communities sometimes have trouble keeping up with the level that bigger city teams play at. Fraser and coaches, Jace Richards, a Dinos alumnus, and Graham Vigrass; a graduate of the University of Calgary who now plays for the men’s national team, have also been working with Lisa Shukin, Rimbey’s high school volleyball coach. Teaming up with Shukin is something Fraser
has really enjoyed. “She’s really willing to learn.” With the junior high students the coaches have broken the game down to its basic components. “We do lots and lots and lots of reps,” said Fraser. The coaching is more advanced with the older students, with more systems lessons and game plays instead of basic drills. “I’m trying to get them to understand the game at a higher level.” Fraser says all the players are willing to learn new techniques and interest has already been generated for a SWAT camp next year.

Kitz 4 Kidz sales more than doubled By Amelia Naismith The Value Drug Mart Kitz 4 Kidz campaign has already surpassed last year’s kit purchases total in half the time. Front store manager Leanne Coleman says last year 75 kits were purchased and 185 have been bought for far this year. “The community has really jumped in and been really awesome,” said Coleman. The Kitz 4 Kidz campaign is a program Value Drug Mart has been involved with for the last eight years. This year, along with partners Stationery, Stories and Sound and the FCSS, people can buy the kits for $5 or make donations, resulting in a
charitable receipt, at the FCSS or the drug mart. Stationery, Stories and Sound is also accepting donations for the program. “The kits are donated to families in the community that are less fortunate who may not be able to afford school supplies for their children,” said Coleman. The kits stay solely within the community, which Coleman thinks is a nice bonus for the community. Kits sell to the end of August. Value Drug Mart is also holding a contest in relation to the program. Those who buy and donate a kit have their name entered in a draw and are eligible to win a $500 Value Drug Mart gift card.

HUMMEL William Charles (Bill) Sept. 5, 1953 - Aug. 7, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother, uncle and best friend. Bill passed away at his home near Cow Lake on August 7, 2012. Bill was born on September 5, 1953 to William and Gladys Hummel. His birthplace was Calgary, AB, where he spent his early years. His parents bought a farm and moved west of Rimbey, where he attended school. He started working early in his life, with construction on the Rimbey School, body shop work, oil patch and pipelining. Later Bill worked at the Bonny Glen Plant and the Rimbey Gas Plant. When Bill’s health declined, he was forced to an early retirement. Bill lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He had a green thumb. His gardens, yard and flowers thrived, and he was very proud of this. He loved his horses, pets and most of all his faithful dog, Teddy. Teddy was Bill’s constant companion for the last eleven years. Bill was a great cook and baker, and always had something prepared for company. His big smile and big hugs also greeted friends and family. Bill is survived by his siblings, Larry (Fern) Gillespie of Oyen, AB, Frank (Alison) Hummel of Rimbey, Valerie (Vern) Browne of Rimbey, David Hummel, of Red Deer, Margaret Hummel of Bentley, Jack (Sharlene) Hummel, of Rimbey and best friends, Randy and Karen Cross, of Rimbey. Bill also leaves to mourn numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces. Bill was predeceased by his brother, Tommy Hummel in 1978; his father, Bill Hummel Sr. in 2003; and his mother, Gladys Hummel in 2005. Friends and family feel they were blessed to have had Bill in their lives. We will cherish the memories we have of Bill. Forever in our thoughts and hearts. A graveside service was held August 11, 2012 at the West Haven Cemetery. If wished, memorial donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

August 8, 2012 at the age of 69 years, after a long battle with cancer. Bert was born on September 23, 1942 to Erastus and Lily Hankins at Bentley, Alberta. He lived his entire life doing what he loved best ... farming.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Rita Irwin at the age of 91. She will be sadly missed by her five children Roderick (Joey), Denise (Frank) Dyck; Susan (Lawrence) Hrycan; Stephen (Valerie); and Eileen (Gary) Key; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Gladys Outhwaite; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband George, daughter Christine, and siblings John, Eileen, Christine and Colin. A celebration of Rita’s life will be held on Saturday, September 22nd, 2012 at 2:00pm at the Rutherford Heights Retirement Residence located at 949 Rutherford Road SW, Edmonton. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation or St. Joseph’s Palliative Care Edmonton.
