The German army was making moves to conscript the local men into battle. If they didn’t, the Soviet Union would, as soon as it managed to re-occupy the country. So Valdur and Alice made a choice. They had to escape Estonia. “It was strict, [the government] didn’t let us go,” recalled Alice. “We had to sneak out in the middle of the night. When the sun was coming up we were already on the sea.” They were among about 13 people on a small fishing boat and carried nothing but two small suitcases filled with photos, mementoes and some clothes. It was Dec. 26, 1943. To complicate matters, Alice was eight months pregnant. “It was very hard. I remember the sun was getting up and I was crying all the time. Seventeen days later, they were married. And so began 70 years of marriage that the Burnaby couple will be marking this week. OPINION NEWSLEADER’S VIEW:

PUBLISHED & PRINTED BY BLACK PRESS LTD. at 7438 Fraser Park Drive, Burnaby, B.C. V5J 5B9

ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Ask the voters Perhaps Premier Christy Clark sees a battle with Alberta – over revenue from allowing the Enbridge pipeline to use B.C. to link Alberta oil with tankers on the Pacific Ocean – as the last hope to rally voters in time for the spring 2013 election campaign. It stands to reason, since the B.C. NDP has staked the opposedto-pipeline position and the B.C. Conservatives have claimed the support-with-conditions spot. However, by demanding B.C. receive oil royalties from profits made from what flows through the pipeline, Clark is simply catering to those who already support the Enbridge proposal. Those opposed have said loud and clear it is not about money, but about inevitable environmental damage. Grand Chief Edward John of the First Nations Summit political executive summed it up in a scathing press release, when he said the B.C. Liberal government has missed the mark, stressing “B.C. First Nations’ traditional territories and pristine environment are not for sale.” John reminded Clark of the Supreme Court of Canada’s stance that there is a legal requirement for governments to “consult and accommodate” First Nations regarding any and all land and resource development initiatives in their respective territories. If First Nations cannot be convinced to allow a pipeline to be constructed through their territories the pipeline simply will not be. With Clark’s demand having been rejected by Alberta Premier Alison Redford, with First Nations still on the sidelines and with strong opposition among the public, perhaps it would be wise for Clark to add a non-binding referendum question to the May 14, 2013 general election ballot. A simple question – Are you in favour of the Enbridge pipeline proposal? – could produce results that tell the government of the day exactly which direction it should travel on this pipeline proposal. – Black Press

he timing was terrible and the substance of the complaints pretty thin. That’s my take on the furore over a Surrey Indo-Canadian soccer group excluding a team with more than four non-IndoCanadians from competing in tournaments. The soccer association has its rules, which it is following, and those pointing fingers at it are simply trying to make this into a racial issue— which it isn’t. The uproar relates to the B.C. Tigers, formerly the Punjab Tigers, which since 2009 have been trying to recruit players under 13 from a variety of ethnic backgrounds for its roster. This is a great idea, and in fact it’s what happens on many Lower Mainland soccer teams. When my son played soccer on teams in both Surrey United and Surrey Youth associations, there were always players of different ethnic backgrounds on his teams. The Indo-Canadian Summer Soccer Association (ISSA)

Frank Bucholtz editor@newwestnewsleader.com

operates a league for summer play. This is not a major competitive soccer league. The competitive leagues operate from September to April, which is the normal soccer season here. The summer teams offer players a chance to keep playing when the other leagues are shut down. A statement from president Sim Sumra noted the tournaments the league operates are sponsored by Sikh gurdwaras, and are designed to “bring Indo-Canadian youth together to promote sport, participation and culture within our community.” This is exactly what many other leagues in a wide variety of sports do all the time—bring together people of a certain background, occupation, race

or religion together for fun, competition and cultural growth. It seems the concerns about ISSA were raised by a Tigers’ parent, whose son is not an Indo-Canadian, after the Tigers were disqualified after reaching a tournament semifinal. While her concerns are understandable, the association is entirely within its rights (and even onside with the Human Rights Code) to restrict the number of “imports” (their word) on each team. The ISSA has been growing in popularity because of the growth of the Indo-Canadian population in the Metro Vancouver region. It started with two teams in 1982. There are now about 400 teams taking part in ISSA and the associated United Summer Soccer League (USSL), for players aged five to 11. USSL is open to players of all ethnic backgrounds. It sounds like both ISSA and USSL are trying hard to keep the doors open to people from other

backgrounds. However, the ISSA limits the numbers of non-IndoCanadians on each team. Is that really a major problem? All this controversy came just a little more than a week after a terrible shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, which has distressed Sikhs all over the world. Many gathered at special services in Surrey to mourn for the dead and injured. There have been several disrespectful references in the past week directed at IndoCanadians via social media and on at least one local radio station. Coming just after the shooting, this is highly offensive. It’s high time that all of us, no matter what our backgrounds, respected our neighbours who may have different skin colours or religious belief, but are our fellow Canadians. Dix’s ‘whims riddled with inconsistencies’ The balanced position Premier Christy Clark has taken on the Enbridge oil pipeline is not only commendably tough and wellconsidered, it also stands in sharp contrast to the opportunistically rash stance taken by NDP opposition leader Adrian Dix. Long before any formal evidence for judging the project’s pros and cons, and its risks and benefits, had even been presented, Mr. Dix saw fit to prejudge the entire project and give it the “Dix nix” heave ho. But why, then, has he been silent on the other major oil pipeline project proposed for B.C. by Kinder Morgan? He hasn’t given that project his “Dix nix” stamp of disapproval. On that project he’s adopted a wait-andsee approach, which is exactly what he criticized Christy Clark for on the Enbridge proposal. As with previous NDP leaders in this province, it seems Adrian Dix believes in rule by whim as opposed to thoughtful, consistent, responsible

A very sincere sounding teacher is running 22 marathons in 22 days, from Cranbrook to Vancouver (see story page A9). Twenty-two to remind us Bill 22 destroyed his ability to provide his students with adequate attention and service. There no longer is a restriction on the number of special needs students per class. Library hours are restricted. Teacher assistants are practically a thing of the past. The number of students per class is no longer limited past the Grade 4 level, etc., etc. I have not always been sympathetic to the hardships

expressed by teachers. I was also under the impression some of the items mentioned had been said prior to Bill 22. However, I did listen to the gentleman and hope he will return the favour. The provincial government has consistently informed us it has upped the amount of money made available to the education budget and every year the number of newly enlisted students has dropped. Inflation has been nowhere near to be of consequence. Does he then agree with me his plight is a result of mismanagement? Both the Liberals and the NDP have proven in the past they are unwilling (incapable?) to address any root causes, both in our school system and other portfolios. Is it not time for a fresh approach? The BC Conservative Party is now offering that choice! Ziggy Eckardt Burnaby

NDP aims to stop Enbridge Tom Fletcher Black Press

Dix and NDP environment critic Rob Fleming said the B.C. Liberal government’s decision to cede control over environmental assessment to Ottawa, and then present no evidence at the federal hearings, left the province out of the discussion. Premier Christy Clark and Environment Minister Terry Lake have announced preconditions of pipeline and tanker safety, and provincial officials are scheduled to crossexamine Enbridge before the federal review panel makes its recommendation to the federal cabinet next year. Dix emphasized that the B.C. cabinet can overrule its own environmental review, just as the federal cabinet can. A provincial review of technical issues would have to be carried out to justify refusing provincial permits, he said. Lawyer Murray Rankin

NDP leader Adrian Dix has found what he believes is a legal roadblock to the Enbridge Northern Gateway oil pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat. Dix announced Wednesday that if he becomes B.C. premier next spring, he will withdraw from the federal-provincial review of the pipeline that is currently underway, and launch a “made in B.C.” review of the pipeline. If that doesn’t result in rejection of the project the NDP opposes provincially and federally, Dix said the B.C. cabinet would have the final say. And if Prime Minister Stephen Harper tries to overrule the province, the battle would shift to individual provincial permits required for river crossings and wildlife corridors in B.C., he said.

was hired to advise the B.C. NDP. He said the joint review agreement with Ottawa allows B.C. to give 30 days notice and opt out, and the existence of the agreement shows that B.C. does have jurisdiction over whether the pipeline proceeds. Dix said he wants to return B.C. to separate federal and provincial reviews of major projects, like the Prosperity gold mine near Williams Lake, where the B.C. government issued a permit, but the federal review later rejected it and spurred a costly redesign. Dix said he met Tuesday with Black Press chairman David Black, who is backing a refinery at Kitimat to process oil sands crude for shipment by sea. Dix said the idea of refining crude domestically is worth pursuing, but the Kitimat proposal doesn’t change his opposition to the Enbridge plan.

They moved to Burnaby 25 years ago and still live here, although apart since Valdur had a stroke a year ago and moved into Willingdon Care Centre. “My life is kind of empty,” Alice said. “It’s my highlight to come here and visit him. Running 22 marathons in 22 days across B.C. is no easy feat, says North Vancouver teacher Ian Cunliffe, but every mile is worth it if he can bring more attention to Bill 22, the B.C. government’s Education Improvement Act. The bill’s name is misleading because it “slashes funding to the bone” rather than improving education, Cunliffe says, speaking to Black Press by phone at a pitstop on day two of his grueling 1,000-kilometre run. Steadily following Highway 3, he left Fernie that morning on his way to Jaffray, a village 47 kilometres east of Cranbrook. He’ll be going through Burnaby on Aug. 30 and 31. With just the second day of 20 completed, the Canyon Heights elementary teacher and librarian knows his muscles will start to give out close to the finish line in Vancouver. “I feel it’s my professional responsibility to tell people the devastating effects Bill 22 will have on our education system,” says Cunliffe as he winds down from his day spent running up and down steep hills in the Kootenay region. While running six hours each

day, often in scorching heat through rough terrain, will be challenging, Cunlifffe says it’s an easy price to pay for the kids he teaches. “Private schools have record numbers on their wait lists, and there’s a reason for this. We have a great public system; what we don’t have is funding. I hope people will realize the public education system needs more.” Cunliffe says his top worries about Bill 22 are that it erases limits on class size, doesn’t guarantee support for special needs students or set a number for how many special needs students are in a class. “[Special needs] students are really neat kids, they’re just great, but they have challenges and need support,” says Cunliffe, overwhelmed with emotion, adding that he has taught many unforgettable children with learning challenges. “Teaching them takes up a lot of my time, and really takes away from the other students.” Before Bill 22 was introduced, a maximum of three special needs students could be in a classroom at a time, says Cunliffe, and class size was reduced by one for each student. But, he adds, the Education Improvement Act does away with this, making

students suffer. Another part of Bill 22 — one of the biggest problems in the eyes of the North Van teacher — abolishes the limit placed on the number of students in a class, forcing teachers to handle more kids at one time. “It’s difficult to teach in a way i that’s manageable. Webcam view of the construction of the new Port Mann Bridge going on while traffic on the old structure continues.

Drivers to get early use of new Port Mann Bridge Some lanes open this fall to aid construction phasing Jeff Nagel Black Press

won’t experience the full travel time savings until the initial eight lanes of the new bridge are open and electronic tolling begins. It will take another year before all 10 lanes are in service, because the old bridge must be taken down before the last two lanes of the new span can be connected to Highway 1. Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom has said the planned $3 per crossing minimum toll may be lowered for the first year while only eight lanes are open. Tolling details are to be released in early September. Also slated to open in December is the northeastern leg of the South Fraser Perimeter Road, which promises a quick route to and from the Pattullo Bridge for drivers who want a free crossing, although critics predict heavy traffic on other roads in north Surrey, Delta, New Westminster and Burnaby. Still to be determined is how a promised Highway 1 rapid bus service over the new bridge will be launched by cash-strapped TransLink.

Motorists may be driving over part of the new Port Mann Bridge as early as September. Tolls won’t be charged until the bridge formally opens with eight out of 10 lanes operational in December. But Port Mann/Highway 1 Project spokesman Max Logan said some traffic will begin using at least a couple of lanes sometime this fall. Shifting some traffic onto the new bridge will help with construction staging as crews still have extensive work ahead of them in the months ahead, notably in completing new overpasses at the Cape Horn interchange on the Coquitlam side. “It could be as early as September,” he said. “It’s likely to be the eastbound lanes that are moved first. The details of that and the timing is still being worked out with the contractor.” Logan likens the early lane openings to the traffic pattern changes that have seen exits and on-ramps shift to accommodate work along the 37-kilometre construction corridor. “By shifting some lanes over to the bridge not only does that create some work space for us it also allows us to transition traffic gradually over to the new bridge.” He said the transportation ministry wants to avoid anything like California’s multiday freeway construction closures that have been Get instruction from registered professionals. dubbed Carmageddon. Cannons to hold fall ball camp The Vancouver Cannons Fall Baseball School opens next Tuesday (Aug. 28) for players 13 to 18 who live in Burnaby and Vancouver. It includes seven weeks of professional instruction and at least 20 games for both the senior and junior teams, plus two or three practices each week. The Cannons have just finished their fourth season in the Premier Baseball League. “We had the youngest team in the league this year,” said head coach Dave Empey in a press release, “and they just got better and better.” The Cannons say they emphasize player development. “When you include our league games and tournaments, like the one we had in Reno, Nevada,” says coach Empey, “plus our 15 spring training games in Phoenix, Arizona, players like Josh Gaudette, Max Wood and Ian Creamore got more than 350 at-bats this season. That’s the best way for them to grow and develop.” Empey has coached 17 professional players. Three of them reached the major leagues, including pitching ace Ryan Dempster, who signed a $52 million contract with the Chicago Cubs. Dempster was recently traded to the Texas Rangers to bolster their American League pennant drive. The Cannon assistant coaches include Jason Andrew, one of the best hitting instructors in the country, who has worked with Brett Lawrie of the Toronto Blue Jays. Devon Franklin, who will work with infielders, and sprint coach Lorne Berkun from Oakland, who adds speed to baserunners. A catching coach, a strength and conditioning expert, and several batting practice pitchers will also be on the staff. “All players are welcome,” says coach Empey. “We won’t cut anyone and the players will all receive seven weeks of professional instruction. It’s all about player development.” Check vancouvercannons.com for further information or contact Empey at 604 771-9736 or daveempey@shaw.ca.

ay good-bye to summer the old fashioned way: with a fall fair. Fall fairs have traditionally been a time for the community to gather, and to look forward to the harvest season. The Burnaby Village Museum’s annual Fall Fair on Monday, Sept. 3 offers family fun, featuring local crafts, demonstrations, and performances. Free carnival rides on the museum’s Lisa Codd century-old carousel are sponsored by CUPE Local 23 and the Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission. Live performances offer something for the entire family, from fiddlers to yo-yos. A visit from Cinemazoo is an annual highlight, featuring animals that perform in film. Vaudeville Varieties’ live performances feature villains to jeer and heroes to cheer. Everyone will want to get in on the fun by participating in heritage races in the meadow and a corn shucking contest at 3:30 p.m. A model train display courtesy of the Train Gang is featured in the carousel pavilion, and the Pacific Spirit Quilters guild will have several of their quilts on display. Local goods are available for sale on this last Market Monday of the season, featuring local crafts and food items for sale by local artisans. The market features everything from artichokes to jewelry, pottery, and gifts for babies. Sept. 3 is the end of the museum’s summer 3:44 PM season. It’s the last chance to see this summer’s displays that look back on the year 1912. The Forest to Suburb exhibit at Stride Studios presents the early history of North Burnaby, and

At the Love farmhouse, the Young Love display features 1912 fashion, courtesy of the Canadiana Costume Society. The museum’s annual Fall Fair is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 3 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission to the museum is free. For further information, call 604-297-4565, or visit www. burnabyvillagemuseum.ca Lisa Codd is the curator at the Burnaby Village Museum.

CARNEVALE AT THE FAIR Lauren Carnevale, of Burnaby, sings Titanium at the PNE Star Showdown on Monday. The showdown was a talent search that showcased the hottest performers from around the province. The fair runs daily through Labour Day, Sept. 3.

33 PEDERSON, Grace Ann On Friday, August 10, 2012, Grace peacefully passed away with her children at her side at the age of 73 at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). Grace was predeceased by her parents, Peter & Ingaborg, brothers Maurice and Palmer, daughter Phyllis and grandchildren Kenneth and Chris. Left to cherish her memory are her 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Pat (Ike), Geraldine (Peter), Linda, and Nancy (Joe), sons Ken (Gwen), and Abe. As well as sisters Clara, Joyce (John), Bernice and brothers Parnell (Marion), Ivan (Lorraine) and Lloyd (Marilyn),and numerous family members in BC and Manitoba. Grace was born September 19, 1938 in Vita Manitoba and moved to BC in 1965. Although she often stated that she was a BC girl, she returned to Manitoba regularly to visit her family, whom she cherished. She was a kind soul who loved to laugh and enjoy life. She always had a smile to give and a kind word to say. Strangers were immediately drawn to her because of her genuine warmth and friendliness. She loved her Harlequin Romance novels, traveling, dancing to good fiddling country music, taking pictures, watching Canucks games and spending time with family and friends. Grace enjoyed activities such as bowling, bingo, playing cards & slot machines. She used the latest Facebook & texting technology to connect with people. She truly loved people and life itself and was tenacious and fiercely independent. She was always game to try anything needing little encouragement. She had an amazing ability to live life one day at a time. Her children wish to thank the staff of the Palliative care Unit of VGH. Your love and kindness towards our Mom and the entire family will never be forgotten. Also, the staff at the Cardiac Clinic at the Royal Columbian Hospital were dear to mom’s heart, always taking the time to assist her and truly caring for her wellbeing. There will be 2 services to Celebrate our Beloved Mother’s life. In Burnaby, a memorial service will be held at her residence on August 26, 2012 at 1pm, and a private family service will be held in Piney, Manitoba on Sunday, Sept 16, 2012. “Plenty of Grace was in this place”

Rob & Miya, proud home owners at firma

MOVE IN TODAY

a new life together with a wedding on the horizon, Rob and Miya were struggling to find a new home that met their expectations. Upon their first visit at Firma, they immediately fell in love with the quality of the design and building materials. They saw craftsmanship. Unlike typical mass-produced condominiums, every detail has been thoughtfully considered in these homes.

New to the area, Rob and Miya have discovered all that The Heights has to offer - amazing green spaces, beautiful community amenities, and a diverse neighbourhood of shops united by civic pride. Welcome home Rob and Miya. We hope your new home is an exciting part of your new life together.
