Forest fire season has slow start Tom Fletcher Black Press After one of the slowest starts in recent years, B.C. forest fire crews are enlisting help from neighbouring provinces to battle a late-season surge of fires. Most of the major fires are in the sparsely populated northeast corner of B.C., restricting the booming natural gas industry in the region. Yukon sent 21 of its firefighters to B.C. on the weekend, joining 20 from Saskatchewan and

and 35 from Ontario. Another emerging hotspot is northwestern B.C., where communities were warned Monday of visible smoke along Highway 16. A fire near Morice Lake was estimated at 1,200 hectares, burning within a park. Near the Yukon border, 20 firefighters worked on the west and south flanks of a 3,500-hectare fire north of Dease Lake. In addition to the two large fires, the Northwest Fire Centre had seven new fire starts Sunday,

sparked by lightning strikes, and reports of 12 abandoned campfires over the weekend. With hot weather through most of August producing high fire risk, campfires were banned last week in the Kamloops region. Other areas still allowed campfires as of Monday, but brush and stubble burning and other open fires are banned in most areas of the province. In the Kootenay region, the Brewer Creek fire south of Invermere was estimated at 30

hectares Monday. Started by lightning, the fire had 22 firefighters, three helicopters and four pieces of heavy equipment assigned to contain it. A 56-hectare fire on Skimmer Horn Mountain near the U.S. border was reported contained by Monday. The fire danger rating is high across most of the province with pockets of extremely dry conditions across the north, the western Interior and the OkanaganSimilkameen regions.

The evacuation order for a raging wildfire 40 kilometres west of Clinton has been lifted. Almost 50 people are now allowed to return to their homes after having been asked to evacuate on Aug. 21. The forest fire in the Big Bar Creek area was estimated at 400 hectares (988 acres) in size as of 11 a.m. Aug. 22 and was zero per cent contained and displaying moderately vigorous fire behaviour. The wildfire has nevertheless grown significantly in size, from 50 ha the day before, and any further expansion is still uncontrolled. Thompson Nicola Regional District chair Randy Murray declared a state of emergency at 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 for Electoral Area ‚E (Bonaparte Plateau).

CRD, city to negotiate fire protection Negotiations will commence immediately in order to allow the CRD sufficient time to obtain the elector approval for taxation for continued fire protection services. City council currently provides fire protection services to a number of properties on the city’s fringe under three separate fire protection agreements. The first agreement is with the province under the Local Services Act and covers a large number of properties on the immediate fringe of the city. The other two agreements are with the CRD and include areas beyond the provincial agreement including Fox Mountain, Esler, and upper Dog Creek Road. The CRD has expressed an interest in pursuing an agreement with the city to continue providing fire protection services to the rural residents covered under the existing agreements.

NDP aims to stop Enbridge pipeline Tom Fletcher Black Press NDP leader Adrian Dix has found what he believes is a legal roadblock to the Enbridge Northern Gateway oil pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat. Dix announced Wednesday that if he becomes B.C. premier next spring, he will withdraw from the federalprovincial review of the pipeline that is currently underway, and launch a “made in B.C.” review of the pipeline. If that doesn’t result in

no evidence at the federal hearings, left the province out of the discussion. Premier Christy Clark and Environment Minister Terry Lake have announced pre-conditions of pipeline and tanker safety, and provincial officials are scheduled to cross-examine Enbridge before the federal review panel makes its recommendation to the federal cabinet next year. Dix emphasized that the B.C. cabinet can overrule its own environmental review, just as the federal cabinet can.

A provincial review of technical issues would have to be carried out to justify refusing provincial permits, he said. Lawyer Murray Rankin was hired to advise the B.C. NDP. He said the joint review agreement with Ottawa allows B.C. to give 30 days notice and opt out, and the existence of the agreement shows that B.C. does have jurisdiction over whether the pipeline proceeds. Dix said he wants to return B.C. to separate federal and provincial reviews of major projects,

Even one or two doses of this drug can result in long-term sleep problems. Over 70% of users report having disturbed sleep because the drug, being a stimulant, resets the body’s clock which often resets at the wrong time. Mood disorders can also occur. Many of the drugs we use today originated from nature. like the New Prosperity gold mine near Williams Lake, where the B.C. government issued a permit, but the federal review later rejected it and spurred a costly redesign. Dix said he met Tuesday with Black Press chairman David Black, who is backing a refinery at Kitimat to process oil sands crude for shipment by sea. Dix said the idea of refining crude domestically is worth pursuing, but the Kitimat proposal doesn’t change his opposition to the Enbridge plan.

City council has appointed a committee of councillors to negotiate with the Cariboo Regional District on fire protection services. At its Aug. 21 meeting, city council appointed a committee comprised of councillors Laurie Walters, Geoff Bourdon, and Sue Zacharias with support from chief administrative officer Brian Carruthers and director of finance pat Higgins. According to a news release from the city, the B.C. government advised the City of Williams Lake in July that the current provincial fire protection covering some areas on the fringe outside the city would be discontinued as of Dec. 31, 2012, and that alternate arrangements will be required to provide fire protection to those properties. A growing obsession

his summer I took three days away from gardening and used them to go on three garden tours. Good grief, hey? You know you’ve let yourself become a tad consumed when you use your only days away from gardening to look at gardens! Another clue was the afternoon I came in from the garden, plopped down beside Darcy on the couch and started watching a Blue Jays game. Instead of getting caught up in the strikes and runs, I started thinking about how much time they spend playing ball. Unlike hockey, ball season starts at seeding time and continues right through to harvest. The more I thought about it the more unsettled I became until finally I blurted out, “It must suck to be a ball player. How do they find time to garden?” Darcy just stared at me in that way he has that always makes me worry about myself. I realized I have entered a dangerous obsession zone where I think everyone is either do-

SLICE OF LIFE SHANNON McKINNON

ing what I am doing or wants to. My only excuse is gardening not only gives me exercise and stress release, but it provides us with most of our vegetables and berries for the year and it is the subject I use to make part of my living writing for garden magazines. It is both my work and my play. I do believe everyone benefits from a walk in a park or a stroll through a botanical garden. The simple act of taking off your shoes and feeling sand or grass on your bare feet can lift your mood faster than a year’s worth of planting your butt on a therapist’s chair. But while we all need nature in our lives, we all don’t need to control it. And like it or not, that’s what gar-

dening is. Controlling a piece of earth all the while knowing our little Eden is only borrowed, never bought. It’s kind of like building sand castles. You race around packing water, shaping the sand, creating grand designs and you are incredibly happy; but in the end the tide reclaims your castle — turrets, moats and all. The whole east side of my garden is edged with forest. While I’m racing about with my wheelbarrow, buckets of water, pots of plants, packets of seeds and a head filled with plans, I imagine nature watching my activity with amusement. It sends runner roots of willows and poplars into the perennial beds. It blows seeds in on the wind, while others are woken from decades of slumber by my spade. On summer nights I fall into bed exhausted beyond belief, but pumped with the euphoria of watching my plans slowly come together. Of course, in the end it’s all for nothing. If I walked away from my garden within a month the vegetable

garden would be lost to weeds. In a year grass would have a stranglehold on the perennials. In five years only the rugosa roses, peonies and monkshood would remain as evidence a gardener once passed through. This doesn’t make me sad. I am glad nature wins in the end. When I want something for a difficult spot I try to use material that comes in on its own from the woods; a patch of wild roses or a clump of white yarrow have been granted space in my garden while a robust patch of fireweed and goldenrod lurk along the southern edge. I eye them uneasily as they bubble with energy, no doubt discussing their conquest strategies long into the night. One corner has been completely taken over by bluebells. Every summer I consider ripping them out, but in the spring they are prettier than any of my pampered spring bloomers. So I suppose the takeover has already begun in a sort of Trojan horse kind of way. Nature is beguiling me with

beauty while hiding its robust reclaiming roots from view. No matter. If my whole flower garden turned wild, I wouldn’t mind. I might even prefer it. The vegetable patch, however, is another matter. No matter how gorgeous they might be, if they venture through those gates it’s off with their heads! As for the three garden tours, I was blown away by the green thumbs quietly working their magic in pockets of the Peace. Despite being in Zone 2b and having one of the hottest, driest, summers on record the gardens were amazing. I didn’t walk away from a single one without a new idea. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing pictures from all 20 gardens at www. peacecountrygardens. com. So come on by, kick off your shoes and treat yourself to some botanical eye candy; no weeding required. Shannon McKinnon is a humour columnist from Northern BC. Recently Andrew, a friend of mine, posed this problem to me: Three men rented a hotel room. Assuming the price was $300 total, each chipped in $100 and gave it to the bellhop, who passed it on to the manager. The manager told the bellhop the room cost was only $250 and gave him $50 to return to the three men. Well, it is not easy to split $50 three ways so the men decided to take $10 each and give the remaining $20 to the bellhop as a tip. The problem is that now each man paid $90, totalling $270. They gave $20 to the bellhop, which brings the total to $290. They started off paying $300, so what happened to the remaining $10? An interesting puzzle, isn’t it? I wrestled with it for some time, finally realizing that this was a classic case of misdirection. By focusing on the $300 I was being mislead. This became clear to me when I tried the same scenario with exaggerated figures of $360 for the room ($120 each), the room still only $250 and the bellhop returning $110. The men each took $30 and gave the remaining $20 to the bell boy leaving a $70 difference. Obviously the reality was that I

PARSONS PEN

BY GERRIT APPERLOO was focused on trying to solve the wrong total – I was being mislead in some way. That is often how it is with life and life issues, isn’t it? Misdirection of focus. Have you heard (or used) the excuse: “I don’t go to church (or believe in God) because the church is made up of hypocrites. Or “If God is truly a loving God, why is there so much pain in the world – the Bible must be lying about who God is. But these are misdirections. The focus is on the wrong thing. Yes, there are many hypocrites in

the church. But the real question should not focus on who is there and how they relate to God, but what is YOUR relationship with God? And yes, there is a lot of pain in the world, a lot of suffering. But who causes it and what part are you playing in the bringing of this pain and suffering? Are you missing out because you are being misdirected to focus on the pain caused by sin rather than God’s love? Satan started this all in the Garden of Eden when he misdirected Eve’s (and Adam’s) attention by asking her to focus on what he led her to believe was missing from her life. He took her attention away from what true life she had and suggested she was being shortchanged in some way by God. It continues to this day! But the truth of life is that God is good, loving, merciful, kind. Sin brings suffering and pain, God brings life, healing, and joy – available through accepting the work of Jesus on the cross as full payment for all sin. Look beyond the subtle misdirection and misleading and see the Truth!

he B.C. government’s emergency committee on timber supply has produced its report, but it leaves many of the big questions unanswered. Can the Burns Lake sawmill, destroyed by fire last winter, be given enough timber to rebuild? It’s likely, committee members concluded, if areas that are currently considered “marginally economic” are harvested. With nearly half the pine in that region dead from beetle infestation, and much of the better timber already cut, that means harvesting areas that would produce only about two thirds of the volume that is currently considered economical to log. Will eight more sawmills have to close once the beetle-killed timber becomes too degraded to cut in the next few years? Committee members hold out hope that extending the cut to less economic timber stands can reduce this impact as well. But with the current cut far above historical levels to maximize beetle-kill harvest, some industry contraction seems inevitable. All this depends on adequate forest inventory and investment in replanting, fertilizing and provision of additional roads and power lines that would allow access to timber and potential bioenergy development. And that is where the politi-

B.C. VIEWS TOM FLETCHER

cal fight lies ahead. The timber supply committee delivered a unanimous report, despite the harsh divisions between the B.C. Liberal and NDP members who serve on it. NDP forest critic Norm Macdonald, vice chair of the committee, agreed it did good work during the seven months it has toured affected areas of the B.C. Interior. But he said the roots of the problem go back a decade, to when the B.C. Liberals started reducing support for forest health just as the beetle epidemic was spreading. Ten years ago the government removed the obligation for the province to reforest areas affected by disease and fire. This was not only at the peak of the epidemic, it was one year before devastating wildfires raced through the Interior in the summer of 2003. “In 2002, the government removed its obligation to replant those areas, and cut the budget by 90 per cent,”

Macdonald told me. “The three-year budget that’s in front of us is keeping on the downward slide, and it’s not what people in communities are saying is the answer. So that has to change.” The opposition, the auditor general and various forest experts have been blasting the government for the degraded state of the timber inventory, at a time when environmental changes have been sweeping. Steve Thomson, minister

of the newly amalgamated forests, lands and natural resource operations ministry, points to the urgent efforts to upgrade the government’s detailed picture of the state of the forests, so it can consider new cutting, planting and fertilizing efforts. But there’s no denying that he came to the job in a crisis that will take more spending in the future, and he will have a hard time finding it as Finance Minister Kevin Falcon looks to balance the

books for the 2013 election. If nothing else, the pine beetle epidemic has forced the B.C. government to consider some of the intensive forest management that we hear about in Scandinavia, one of those places that supplies B.C. with wood furniture. And it has prompted renewed interest in offering new forest tenures to aboriginal communities with unresolved resource claims. Under current law, the

government can only direct award new forest tenures to aboriginal communities. So part of the committee’s proposed solution is to “expedite negotiations” with the Burns Lake First Nations to give them a chance to harvest some of the marginally economic forest areas that remain. N It’ To ot s S Re To till gi La Excellence in Christian Education st te er I Wondered If I Would See The Day

ARIBOO

Christian Education is a special gift many parents give their children. These parents make sacrifices to give this gift, because they believe not only in its importance, but also in its value. The following letter is by a parent who made those sacrifices to have her child complete his education at Cariboo Adventist Academy.

“Today was a day I had often wondered if I would ever see. Not because Gregorson isn’t smart. I personally think he is brilliant, but because starting early in his Kindergarten year he decided he hated school. By the time Grade 3 rolled around he was a master at getting suspended. Grade 4, I home schooled. Grade 5 and 6 were his first years in Williams Lake, back in the public school system, and things were not improving. By Grade 7 I knew I had to find something else for Gregorson. In talking to a friend I heard about a small private school called Cariboo Adventist Academy. Although he did still manage to get suspended a couple of times in his early years, CAA was the answer we needed. It is a very special place full of amazing teachers and people. It not only got Gregorson through to graduation, it got each of us through our separate battles with cancer, and a very scary infection following his surgery. For their patience, commitment and love towards my son, I will forever by grateful.” Karen Mahon

Quality Faith-Based Education for the Cariboo and Online Throughout British Columbia Cariboo Adventist Academy and West Coast Adventist School is committed to developing tomorrow’s leaders one child at a time. For fifty years CAA has offered the opportunity for a Christian Education in the Cariboo. “Our mission,” says Principal Lee Richards, “is to have a total program designed to guide the student in developing a meaningful, personal relationship with

God, church, country, community, family, and self, while harmoniously developing their physical, mental, social and spiritual abilities as lifelong learners. CAA is a fully accredited Category 1 Independent School in British Columbia. If you are considering an Adventist Christian Education for your child do come and see us and explore the opportunities.

Considering An Adventist Christian Education To talk to someone or for more info about CAA or West Coast Adventist School contact Mr. Richards at 250-392-4741. West Coast Adventist School is a truly unique school providing Christian Education anywhere

True Christian Education reaches out and touches lives in meaningful and personal ways. It not only impacts the student, but also the immediate family, and touches the lives of all who come in contact with them.

Grieving Grad Gives Tearful Tribute to Parents This year at the joint West Coast Adventist School and Cariboo Adventist Academy Graduation Ceremonies held in Williams Lake, parents were emotionally moved as a tearful Rita Bryant, of Terrace, BC, paid tribute to the parents of the students of this year’s graduating class.

DVENTIST 5 Major Benefits Of Christian Education Why would parents opt to pay tuition to send their children to a Christian school when they can receive an excellent public school education for free? Here are 5 great reasons. 1. Academic excellence, values and life skills from a Christian perspective 2. Reduced risk of use of drugs and alcohol 3. Teaching science in a faith-based context 4. Support for parents in reinforcing faith-based values and beliefs 5. Teaching from a Christ-centered Biblical worldview in a Christ-centered Environment The staff of Cariboo Adventist Academy believes Christian education is an investment well worth the cost with an educational process in which students are exposed to staff and faculty who are chosen based not only on their ability to teach but also their personal Christian values.

CADEMY

A Night at the Museum

Earlier in the month, the graduating classes of the two schools had selected Rita to deliver this year’s tribute to parents. With the help of her father, Peter, she drafted the speech, the contents of which were kept as a secret surprise for her mother, to be delivered on the Friday night of Graduation Weekend. She began attending online classes when she entered Grade 9, and continued to attend as her family moved a couple of times around the province. Over those years she developed friendships with her online classmates, and came to know them better when she visited the school for Face-2-Face Weeks. These are times when online students come to attend classes at Cariboo Adventist Academy to enhance their academic experience.

During the last week of school, Grades 7 and 8 students at Cariboo Adventist Academy brought a special treat to the community by putting on what they called “A Night at the Museum” Under the direction of their teacher, Ms. Meryl Carey, students chose and researched individuals who lived during the Renaissance period of history. The students then used this information to write their own scripts describing who these people were, the influence they had during this period, their accomplishments and any other “interesting” facts they could find out about these people.

On the morning of Friday, June 1, one week before graduation, tragedy struck the family when Peter Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash just outside of Terrace. It was not known if Rita would be able to attend Graduation, let alone give the speech she and her father had worked on together. By the beginning of the following week it was apparent that Rita would be attending, and she was still determined to deliver that speech. Bailey Helicopters, Peter Bryant’s employer, arranged for two of their employees, both personal friends of Rita’s father, to join the family for the weekend in Williams Lake, and to “stand in” for her father. On the Friday night of Graduation, Rita approached the microphone and began delivering the tribute to the parents. In the second row, Rita’s mom, Vi, could be seen watching her daughter. At the beginning, Rita faltered a bit, and one of her classmates came and stood by to hold her hand. With great determination she continued on saying “I want to break this down into two parts, since there is a mom and a dad.” When she concluded speaking about the support given by their mothers to the grads, it looked like Rita might not be able to continue as she transitioned to speaking about fathers. When her classmates saw she was beginning to become overwhelmed with emotion, her entire grad class came and gathered close around her to lend their support to her. As Rita completed her tribute to parents, surrounded by her fellow classmates, the entire auditorium stood to their feet in ovation to this young girl’s courage and determination.

in BC through online education but with direct contact with teachers daily. For info on the only Half-Day Kindergarten in Williams Lake talk to Mrs. Brucks.

The students donned period costumes and created models of the technology or props that would be associated with them. Around the gymnasium there was Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, DaVinci with a model of his flying machine, Galileo and his telescope, a banker from Florence, Guttenberg and his printing press, mystics, other painters and inventors, as well as some figures from the aristocracy.

Help ensure kids get a healthy start for school MargaretiNg Special to the Tribune The first day of school will come up faster than you know it, especially when racing around gathering up all of the required school supplies, outfits, and the like. But during all of the hustle and bustle, don’t forget to think about how to keep them healthy and alert as they sit through all of their classes. Pack healthy lunches: Parents strive to give their children the nutrition they need. However, how do you make sure your kids actually eat it, rather than trashing or trading it? You need to make the food appealing. For example: • Keep it petite: Little people enjoy little portions so they can snack through the day. Consider substituting the double-

decker hero sandwich for several smaller items. • Add fun with finger foods: Experiment with nutritious dips and spreads for veggies and crackers. Alternatively, boil an egg they can peel themselves. • Consult your kid: There is no better way to ensure they eat their lunch than by getting their buyin. Find out what their favourite snacks are and shop accordingly. Start a “walkingâ€? school bus: More than half of Canadian children aren’t as active as they need to be to ensure healthy development. Walking is a great way to promote physical activity in kids. To make it fun, start a walking group supervised by an adult (usually a parent) that collects neighbourhood students at prearranged stops and times.

Look for head lice: When kids are clustered together in classrooms, it’s a prime time for parasites to go body hopping. Head lice cause itching and a sensation that something is moving on the scalp. To manage this check your child’s hair weekly for signs of lice or nits and don’t allow your child to share a brush, comb or hair accessories with friends. Anticipate back-toschool stress: There are many sources of back-toschool stress, including adjusting to new teachers and classmates. Pacific Blue Cross’s My Good Health Portal contains a

number of clues that your child may be stressed — ranging from bedwetting to headaches. Sometimes stress has a more serious cause, such as bullying or a school-related phobia. Look out for signs of stress such as clinginess, crying, irritability, sudden bedwetting or sleep disturbances. If your child is stressed, talk to them about coping techniques or solutions. If appropriate, involve a teacher in problem solving and check in with your family doctor if the stress seems unmanageable. Margaret Ng is a health and wellness manager for the Pacific Blue Cross.

Frederick Elmer Plowe Frederick “Fred” E. Plowe passed away August 14th, 2012 in Kelowna, BC at 88 years of age. Fred was born in Calgary, AB on September 16th, 1923 and for the last eight years has resided in Armstrong, BC. He is survived by his wife Mary-Lou, son Edward “Ted” (Bonnie) Rivershore of Kamloops, daughter Marilynn (Gerry) Goetjen of Prince George, son Bruce (Connie) Blair of Kamloops, son Bryan “Hoss” Blair of Armstrong, daughter Pam (Martni) Randell of Armstrong, daughter-in-law Mik Tobiano of Kamloops, nine grandchildren, and he was looking forward to the arrival of the family’s 17th greatgrandchild. Fred was predeceased by his eldest son Frederick “Butch” Plowe in 2002. Fred was a WWII Veteran, in the Normandy Campaign in the first days of the invasion, “North Nova Scotia Highlanders” infantry Div III. The theatres of war were France, Belgium, and Holland. Fred spent many years in business in Williams Lake and retired to Vernon in 1976. He moved around alot including Vernon, Nanoose Bay, Williams Lake, Chase, and finally Armstrong. Fred was always up for an adventure and meeting new people, making long lasting friendships along the way. For many years, Fred enjoyed the family cabin on Horsefly Lake where many good times, memories and friends were made. When it was time to sell the Horsefly cabin, he realized his dream of having a boat on the ocean, that was where he was truly the happiest. Fred enjoyed boating up and down the Sunshine Coast for over thirty-three years. A family home on Sevilla Island in Lund, BC was where he and Mary-Lou spent many summers. This was his Shangri-La. Teaching the kids and grandkids all about the ocean was just the best! Fred also enjoyed many good times around Bella Coola on his various boats with family. Skiing was also Fred’s passion for many years, often travelling from Williams Lake on weekends to ski Silver Star Mountain. He also enjoyed Banff, Jasper, Mount Washington, Lake Tahoe, and Squaw Valley Idaho. In his later years, Fred joined a group of folks out of Chase, they skied three times a week at Sun Peaks Mountain, those were great years! Fred loved to travel, Hawaii was one of his favourite spots, but travels also included Barbados, Grand Cayman Island, Arizona, California, Mexico, and a cruise through the Panama Canal just last September. We will miss you Fred, more than we can express and we are so blessed that we have shared a life with you. God speed to you on your journey Fred! In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donation be made to “The Legion Foundation” in support of veteran’s housing (#152, 5489 Byrne Road, Burnaby, BC V5J 3J1). There will be a Celebration of Fred’s life at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 25th, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Hall (3335 Patterson Street, Armstrong, BC). Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www.MyAlternatives.ca. Arrangements entrusted to ALTERNATIVES FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES® Armstrong 250-546-7237 & Vernon 250-558-0866
