Many experts now believe that consuming vitamin supplements in liquid form is substantially more beneďŹ cial than relying on solid pills-a belief that is supported by research studies:“liquid supplements contain the nutrients in a more highly bioavailable form, are gentler to the stomach, and sometimes are more suitable than solid supplements, especially for children and elderly patients.â€? The liquid advantage A liquid multivitamin supplement offers a number of beneďŹ ts over solid forms for people of all ages, but especially for older adults or those with known digestive issues. Among the beneďŹ ts are the following: • Liquids are quickly and readily absorbed, as they do not ďŹ rst need to be broken down. • Liquids contain no ďŹ llers, binders or coatings that may interfere with proper dissolution. • Liquids are fully dissolved upon ingestion, and allow for absorption of key nutrients along the entire gastrointestinal tract. • Liquids are a welcome alternative for people who have trouble swallowing solid pills, particularly children, the elderly and those who are ill or convalescing. • Due to enhanced absorption of nutrients, liquids may allow for lower general dosing than with solid pills.

St. Mary’s Band opens new education centre Submitted

David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Kootenay-Columbia, on behalf of the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, announced today the opening of the ?aq’amnik Education Centre. This investment has been assisted

in part by measures under Economic Action Plan 2012. “The Harper Government is taking concrete steps to improve onreserve learning environments and, in turn, improve educational outcomes for First Nation students,” said Minister Duncan. “A good education is key to positioning First

Nation students to get jobs and achieve the success and prosperity they seek and Canada needs.” “Our Government is proud to have partnered with the St. Mary’s Band to help the next generation of First Nation students achieve their educational goals,” said Mr. Wilks. “We believe that good education and a growing economy go hand in hand and investing in schools on reserve will lead to healthier, more self-suf¿cient communities.” “?aq’amnik Elementary has been offering quality educational programming to the community for over 25 years. This new facility

will provide additional opportunities to expand our educational programming and services to better meet the needs of our community and to meet the goals and objectives set out in our long term strategic plan,” said St. Mary’s Band Chief Cheryl Casimer. The new elementary school will accommodate approximately 50 students from kindergarten to Grade 7 in a two-story building that includes several classrooms, of¿ce space, a meeting room, and a cafeteria. The new facility will better meet the needs of St. Mary’s Band students and enhance their educational experience by provid-

ing a modern and functional learning environment. The Harper Government invested over $1.8 million in the?aq’amnik Education Centre. The St. Mary’s Band contributed an additional $500,000 towards the $2.3 million facility. This project is part of the $175 million for new schools and major renovations included in the Government’s Economic Action Plan 2012 commitments to First Nation education. These measures build on the more than $1 billion a year the Harper Government spends on First Nation education and will contribute to creating the conditions required for Canada’s First Nations to participate more fully in Canada’s economy. The St. Mary’s Band is located east of Cranbrook, B.C., near the Rocky Mountains. The community has a total population of 365 people, of whom 191 live on reserve.

Tournament cancelled, support continues Submitted A dif¿cult decision by East Kootenay Foundation for Health and Kootenay Savings to cancel the 5th Annual Celebrating Health Care Golf Tournament has now turned into an exciting opportunity. The charity golf tournament was to support the ‘A Clear View ~ digital stereotactic mammography campaign’ for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Although golf is no longer an option, Kootenay Savings will continue to support the fundraising effort by moving their ¿nancial support ($15,000) to the return of the ‘Clearly… a Breast Friends’ Bash’, organized by Invermere’s Sheila Tutty - one of the Faces of the A Clear View campaign. Held in March of this year, the original ‘Clearly… a Breast Friends’ Bash’ raised just over $17,000 for the campaign spearheaded by East Koo-

tenay Foundation for Health. Kootenay Savings support for a fall celebration event and continued support of healthcare takes on extra special meaning this year, as a number of Kootenay Savings employees have fought, or are currently ¿ghting, breast cancer. “Seeing the commitment the East Kootenay Foundation for Health and the health care auxiliaries have to improving regional healthcare, as well as the integral role our passionate employees and directors in the East Kootenays played in fundraising for the Invermere Hospital, it was a natural ¿t for us to lend our support to the Clear View campaign and the upcoming celebration”, shared Kootenay Savings President & CEO, Brent Tremblay. Support from many sponsors who originally contributed to the golf tournament has been tremendous for both the Clearly… a Breast Friends’ Bash

and the A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign. The Saturday, October 27 event will once again take place at the wonderful Black Forest Restaurant and feature models, all of whom are breast cancer survivors, showcasing fashions from some of Invermere’s ¿nest retailers. The Windermere Health Care Auxiliary will also be on hand offering a 50/50 draw with proceeds going to the Invermere Hospital Palliative Care Unit. There will be door prizes, laughter, some speeches and the chance to join Kootenay Savings and other supporters in celebrating health care and the drive to bring the best in breast cancer imaging to the region. Doors open at 5:30 pm, 3-course dinner at 6:30 pm and the fashion show at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be ready in early September and available at the Invermere and Radium

branches of Kootenay Savings. Kootenay Savings, over the past four years of the Celebrating Health Care Golf Tournament, has helped raise over $88,000 towards the Invermere District Hospital emergency and pediatric departments! Now, working together with the ‘Clearly… a Breast Friends’ Bash’, they continue to take a regional approach to help bring leading-edge technology in breast cancer care to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. For more information about the ‘Clearly… a Breast Friends’ Bash’contact Sheila Tutty, event coordinator at 250- 342-9059; email sheilatutty@telus.net or call Donna Grainger, East Kootenay Foundation for Health toll-free at 1-877-489-6481.

BC Hydro donates to education society BC Hydro is again contributing $3,600 to Blue Lake Forest Education Society. The funding this year will assist Cranbrook and area youth to attend leadership summer camp and the Outdoor Youth Leadership School (OYLS) taking place this summer at the Blue Lake Centre located west of Canal Flats. The training objectives this year are leadership and teamwork skill development including a focus on environmental stewardship and social skills development. The programs also

encourage ecological awareness and foster social responsibility to the environment - and to one another. Participants will take part in a seven day outdoor leadership program. They will be exposed to new ideas and creative approaches on how to communicate effectively, risk manage, collaborate, problem solve & think critically, build self esteem and encourage others. BC Hydro supports the development of youth and education through its Donations & Sponsorships pro-

gram. Skills developed from valuable community programs such as OYLS and summer camp are instrumental in the development of future leaders in our communities. BC Hydro’s Community Investment programs provide support to community-based, non-pro¿t organizations, registered charities and First Nations who are active in one of our key funding areas: Environment Sustainability, Community Leadership, Youth and Lifestyle, and align with business objectives.

CFUW celebrates 30 years The Cranbrook Chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is proud to be celebrating its 30th anniversary on September 20th, with a special event. It will begin at 7 pm at the Manual Training School attached to the Cranbrook Public Library. Refreshments will be served and the event is open to the public. Guest speaker Ghada Alatrash (Janbey) will speak on “Think of Others”: Building Bridges between East and West. Like many clubs, the CFUW is a non-pro¿t organization. There are approximately 125 clubs across Canada working towards the goals of stimulating interest in cultural, social and political ¿elds, developing sound concepts of educational value, awarding scholarships and bursaries, establishing good relationships with other organizations and using our own education for the bene¿t of the community in which we serve. CFUW is af¿liated with the International Federation of University Women (IFUW), a global organization advocating for women’s rights, equality and empowerment through access to quality education and training up to the highest levels. In 1984 CFUW Cranbrook started an annual

Recipients of this award are very much admired and respected in the community and are often “unsung heroines”. Any woman in the East Kootenay region is eligible to receive the award based on the following criteria: her contributions to the education and/or advancement of women, and how she has inspired and enriched the lives around her by her endeavors. The recipients’ contributions and achievements may have taken place in the last year or over a period of

time. Her efforts may have been part of paid employment, voluntary, or a combination of both. “Education” does not necessarily carry an academic meaning, but can be more widely interpreted to mean supporting and encouraging learning. CFUW Cranbrook has a wonderful scrapbook which has pictures and news articles about each recipient. Each page is artfully decorated in the new scrapbook methods of the day. It will be on display at our 30th anniversary celebration, with many recipients in attendance.

One last summer fling before school The meaning behind some parts of our history tends to fade from our collective memory over time. This is certainly the case for Labour Day, a holiday that has taken on a whole new signi¿cance through the years. One thing remains the same, however: Canadians continue to welcome this long weekend with open arms! Nowadays, Labour Day signals the end of summer activities and the beginning of a new school year, and it is a time to relax before our busy fall schedules take precedence. Even though there is still a feeling of summer in the air, we become more aware that the days are getting shorter and we notice that the harvest season is around the corner, bringing fall scents like hay and wet fallen leaves. Labour Day is a time of change in many different ways, and it provides

exploring new areas of the country. Yet there is a great deal of meaning behind this special event, which we all celebrate on the ¿rst Monday of September. It should also be a time to remember the origins of Labour Day, to remember that, without the efforts and sacri¿ces of the labour movement

to improve working conditions during the 1880s and ‘90s, this holiday would not exist. That vast mobilization of the labour force, born in big cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, grew to encompass the entire Canadian working class and became the holiday that we know today.

Labour Day has been celebrated on the ¿rst Monday in September in Canada since the 1880s. The origins of Labour Day in Canada can be traced back to December 1872 when a parade was staged in support of the Toronto Typographical Union’s strike for a 58-hour work-week. The Toronto Trades Assembly (TTA) called its 27 unions to demonstrate in support of the Typographical Union who had been on strike since March 25. George Brown, Canadian politician and editor of the Toronto Globe hit back at his striking employees, pressing police to charge the Typographical Union with “conspiracy.” Although the laws criminalising union activity were outdated and had already been abolished in Great Britain, they were still on the books in Canada and police arrested 24 leaders of the Typographical Union. Labour leaders decided to call another similar demon-

stration on September 3 to protest the arrests. Seven unions marched in Ottawa, prompting a promise by Canadian Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald to repeal the “barbarous” antiunion laws. Parliament passed the Trade Union Act on June 14 the following year, and soon all unions were seeking a 54-hour work-week. The Toronto Trades and Labour Council (successor to the TTA) held similar celebrations every spring. American Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was asked to speak at a labour festival in Toronto, Canada on July 22, 1882. Returning to the United States, McGuire and the Knights of Labor organised a similar parade based on the Canadian event on September 5, 1882 in New York City, USA. On July 23, 1894, Canadian Prime Minister John Thompson and his government made Labour Day, to be held in September, an of¿cial holiday. In the United States, the New York

parade became an annual event that year, and in 1894 was adopted by American president Grover Cleveland to compete with International Workers’ Day (May Day). While Labour Day parades and picnics are organised by unions, many Canadians regard Labour Day as the Monday of the last long weekend of summer. Non-union celebrations include picnics, ¿reworks displays, water activities, and public art events. Since the new school year generally starts right after Labour Day, families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer. An old fashioned tradition in Canada and the United States bans the wearing of white after Labour Day. Explanations for this tradition vary; the most common is that white is a summer colour and Labour Day unof¿cially marks the end of summer. The rule may have been intended as a status symbol for new members of the upper and middle classes in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Labour Day Canadians have celebrated Labour Day for over 100 years, declared as a National holiday in 1894. The East Kootenay District Labour Council represents working people from all sectors of employment in the East Kootenay in all work sectors, who contribute to their communities every day of the year. We want to recognize all workers for their hard work & dedication to improving their workplaces & their communities for the betterment of everyone.

The East Kootenay District Labour Council is holding its

11th Annual Labour Day Picnic and invites everyone in the East Kootenay to join us on Labour Day, Mon., Sept. 3 at Rotary Park in downtown Cranbrook 11:00 am - 4:00 pm BCGEU Cross Component Committee and members volunteer at this picnic.

Investors Group honours employee who volunteers for community good Submitted Liz Desrosiers has been drawn to volunteer for causes close to her heart and close to the people she cares about. It is for her longstanding commitment to organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, along with local schools and sports teams in her community of Cranbrook that Liz has been recognized as Investors Group’s second quarter Employee Volunteer Award recipient for 2012. Desrosiers has been the region coordinator for the Kootenay region for the past 12 years, but her passion for volunteerism ignited at her previous job, when three people in her workplace were battling cancer at the same time. She organized a couple of teams from work to run in the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life back in 1998. This simple gesture led to greater involvement

the kids wouldn’t have opportunities to play and be safe.” When Desrosiers’ son Cole was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in 2003, she made it a personal commitment to support the work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). “I decided early that I would do everything in my power to help my son live the best life he could with T1D,” said Desrosiers. “I organized a support group for families living with the disease in 2004 and at that time found the JDRF organization online.” Desrosiers also became active in raising funds, ¿rst participating and encouraging others to take part in the foundation’s yearly walks which were held in another community about an hour away. In 2009, the East Kootenay Walk to Cure Diabetes was held in Cranbrook, and she became the walk coordinator. This developed into an annual regional event

with the relay, joining the organizing committee the following year and serving as the team volunteer chair for three years in addition to organizing an Investors Group team after she began with the Kootenay of¿ce. In 2000, when her children started elementary school, she felt it was important to be involved in their school and volunteered with the Highlands School Parent Advisory Committee by organizing family night pasta dinners and carnivals and handing out hot dogs on hot lunch days. When they started to play organized sports, she chaired local hockey tournaments, managed their hockey and cheerleading teams and volunteered at lacrosse tournaments. “I think it is important to give back to organizations like minor hockey and lacrosse or school sports like cheerleading or volleyball because they need help,” said Desrosiers. “Without volunteers,

for the Kootenay of¿ce, with a lot of support coming from members of the Kootenay team. As a result funds raised from the walks went from approximately $5,000 a year in 2005 to $29,000 in 2010 and $22,000 in 2011. “My work with the JDRF is important to me because I want to be able to look my son in the eyes every single day and know that I have done everything possible to help him live the best life he can with diabetes,” said Desrosiers. “But another reason is, it has been a wonderful way to show our East Kootenay communities what a giving and caring company Investors Group is.” Looking back on the years she has devoted to so many worthy causes, Desrosiers reÀects: “I couldn’t begin to count the number of hours I have spent with these organizations but I wouldn’t trade one minute. It has been extremely ful¿lling and I love doing it. I also feel it is important to model volunteering for my kids and they are always helping out at the walk or volunteering at school. I would like to thank Diane Babcock, my partner in the region of¿ce and Lois Kerr, my leader for nominating me,” she concludes. “I truly feel very fortunate to work with a company where volunteerism and community spirit are supported and so very important. I would not have been able to help out with these organizations if I wasn’t working in such a supportive atmosphere.” In recognition of her award, a $1,000 donation has been made to Desrosiers’ charity of choice, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She also received a plaque and gift card to commemorate the occasion.

Themed rooms for children

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Decorating your child’s room? Why not try a theme? Whether it’s for a baby or a big kid, choosing a theme for a child’s bedroom is not always easy. Some popular themes, such as trendy film characters, are short-lived while others become classics. For a little girl’s bedroom you can’t go wrong with Àowers, fairies, princesses, birds, butterÀies, hearts, and romantic roses, while classic boy themes include sports, cars, planes, outer space, knights, pirates, robots, and camouÀage. Neutral themes are also a possibility, such as Mother Nature, animals, especially cats and dogs, or a jungle with big, funny elephants and majestic giraffes. The age of the child should always be taken into consideration when choosing a theme. For example, gentle, classic bear and rabbit themes with light colours are

popular with very young girls and boys, but they won’t likely suit the tastes of older children. A newborn’s bedroom can be decorated with celestial themes: stars, birds, angels and clouds, which are airy and soothing for babies and tired parents. For older children, geographical themes based on a particular country or continent, such as Mexico or Asia, or topical themes, such as the environment or ecology, are also interesting options.

Whichever theme you choose, make sure that it can be easily changed. For example, you might display the theme only in fabrics and decorative accessories. Opt for white or natural wood furniture and choose a fairly neutral colour scheme for painting the walls; wallpaper will be more difficult to replace when your child’s tastes evolve. No matter the style and theme, try to avoid cluttering the room and mixing styles.

Freshen up the kitchen If your kitchen is looking a little shabby, maybe it’s time to freshen it up. The simplest way to do that is to give the walls a good paint job. Replacing the handles and knobs of cupboards and drawers will also rejuvenate your kitchen in a blink of the eye. These ornaments come in a huge variety of models and colours, so it is more than easy to ¿nd ones that will harmonize with any type of kitchen. Replacing the tap or sink will also amp up a kitchen’s look. Elaborate, retro, or modern designs, gleaming colours, and beautiful ¿nishes are all on offer in many different models that are resistant to wear and easy to maintain. If the look of cupboards and drawers needs to be freshened up, you can paint them, add moldings, reface

In Memoriam

Sept. 23,1938 to Aug. 2, 2011 Kenneth Ohlhausen "We often think of bygone days when we were all together. The family chain is broken now but memories live forever. To us he has not gone away nor has he travelled far. Just entered God's eternal home and left the gate ajar. A light from our family is gone a voice we loved is still. A place is vacant in our lives which never can be ¿lled. Your memory is our keepsake from which we will never part. God has you in his keeping, we have you in our hearts. Silently the angles took daddy into the mansion above. There shall he rest from earth's til safe in the arms of God's love." Lovingly remembered by Kimi, David & kids

Muscle under the hood but Roomy, powerful and built to take you and your family anywhere still a car for the family

Twin turbochargers and performance upgrades mean that the 2012 Taurus maintains its position as one of the most stylish and muscular family cars on the market. Overall: With a facelifted Taurus coming next year, other than a new paint hue, the company is leaving well enough alone for 2012. Drivetrain: Ubiquitous would describe the widely used 263-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 engine that drives the front wheels via a standard six-speed automatic transmission; the “raging bull” SHO adds twin turbochargers and other performance upgrades to the V6, causing 365 horses to enervate all four wheels. It’s amazing what a little sexy sheetmetal and some modern technology can do to a car. The Ford Taurus that rolled out in 2010 is based on the boring, forgettable, rental-Àeet fodder that occupied most of the last the decade in Five Hundred then Taurus form. The 2012 Taurus gets motivation from the familiar 263-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 found in a host of Ford prod-

ucts. Base models get the standard six-speed automatic transmission with a system that prevents the car from rolling backward on an incline. Mid-level and upscale editions are upgraded with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles and a rev-matching program for smoother downshifts while all-wheel-drive is as an option on the latter. However, all-wheel-drive is a standard part of the fullblooded SHO package. This raging bull is ¿tted with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 that generates 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The basic chassis architecture gets signi¿cant stiffening and retuning to improve driving precision and ride comfort. Other highlights include a unique grille, rear-deck spoiler, sport-tuned suspension, 19- or optional 20-inch wheels, leather-coated interior, 10-way adjustable
