perfect storm of high food prices, new drinking and driving laws and the harmonized sales tax are putting the squeeze on downtown restaurants and causing some to close, says Peter Ertsos, owner of Diners Rendezvous. The restaurant closed its doors two weeks ago, just a few days after the Modern Café and the Dancing Goat coffee shop closed, leaving a growing culinary void in Nanaimo’s downtown. Ertsos said both restaurants and retail owners he’s talked to are having a tough time. “The biggest challenge I see is oil prices,” he said. “It has affected not only food costs but everything we’re buying lately. Everything is outrageously priced and it’s all due to transportation costs.” Ertsos, who has been in the restaurant business for 30 years, said he grew tired of working 14-hour days, seven days a week with little or no profit. When the province introduced tough new drinking and driving laws, Ertsos said he went from placing a $4,000 liquor order monthly to just an $800 order. Prior to that, food costs increased exponentially. In 2005, a nine-kilogram box of tortilla chips cost $18.76. Today the same item costs $36.

Everything is outrageously priced and it’s all due to transportation costs.

Last August, he said he paid $16.95 for a 11-kg case of bell peppers. In the winter months, that increases to more than $100. Food shortages and an imbalance in distribution in North America have prompted imports from Europe and Asia, further increasing prices. “The salad is still $7,” he said. With restaurant margins at a razor thin three to five per cent per plate, too much is piling up on owners to make a go of it, said Ertsos. Corry Hostetter, general manager at the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association, said her interviews with downtown Nanaimo restaurant owners suggests a natural progression of change. ◆ See ‘OTHER’ /4

Development helps fill housing need

Nanaimo’s first privatelyfunded student housing complex officially opens its doors Wednesday (Aug. 29). Great West Student Residences on Wakesiah Avenue, across from Vancouver Island University, is a 25-unit, 37-bed student housing complex. The furnished one- and two-bedroom suites each feature a kitchenette with microwave, fridge and twoburner stove and a threepiece bathroom. The threestorey building also has indoor and outdoor common areas on each floor, free wireless Internet, a covered bike storage area in the basement, coin-operated laundry facility and secured premises, including cameras, key card entry and on-site management. Manjit Bal, owner of Great West Developments Ltd., said he got the idea for the residences in 2009 when he was in Nanaimo working on another project and had a conversation with some city officials about the shortage of student housing in the city. Because the project was a first for Nanaimo, a unique zoning had to be created for the project. “There was no legislation, no rules and regulations to follow,” said Maureen Pilcher, a land-use consultant representing Great West. “We basically had to reinvent the wheel. It’s not only dedicated to students, it’s covenanted so it can only be for students.” She said the complex is being marketed to international students because of its location next to the university and proximity to shopping, restaurants and other amenities and it only has about a dozen parking spaces in expectation that many residents will not have cars.

Pilcher describes the building as modern and edgy, with an exterior designed to compliment the industrial-like buildings across the street at VIU. Andrea Blakeman, manager of VIU’s homestay program, said there’s a great need for more off-campus housing options. The university has just under 400 dorm spaces on campus, yet 10,000-12,000 students attend VIU each year, including between 1,200 and 1,600 international students. They still need support, love, and guidance. Gary Noble, the city’s development approvals manager, said this is the first project of its kind in the city, but preliminary discussions are happening with two other developers regarding student housing on Third Street and in the Old City Quarter. He said the city is happy with the location and design of the new residences,

as Wakesiah Avenue is designated as a main corridor, so the city wants to encourage mixed-use development there. “The city is hoping to see more of these projects along there and create a sort of university precinct at some point,” said Noble. Bal said about 11 of the units are filled and he has more applications to look through. He is also looking for an on-site manager. Talal El Bakkar, owner of Aladdin’s Café on Victoria Crescent, said outside influences like government legislation don’t bother him. He’s opening a second location on Nicol Street, just a few blocks away from his current location. “We don’t really rely too much on alcohol,” he said. “When people come here they come here for the food. If they have a glass of wine, great, but we focus on food and atmosphere.” He also keeps his overhead low, doing most of the kitchen work himself while keeping one or two servers on at any given time in the 35-seat restaurant. El Bakkar does his own food prep and cooking among other proprietary duties, and he says he loves what he does. “When you open a

restaurant the thing is you can’t say I’m the owner and just go off somewhere on holidays. I have to be here from 10 in the morning to 11 at night non-stop. I do it because I enjoy it.” Ertsos, who’s owned Diners Rendezvous for two and a half years, said he’s simply had enough. “I’m done,” he said. “This was my 30th year in business and my final year. I’m never doing it again.” Before moving on to other opportunities, Ertsos predicts that in a decade’s time virtually every restaurant will be a franchise restaurant. “It’s just getting too difficult,” he said. “There are simply too few dining dollars and too many variables beyond our control out there for independents to make it.” reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

Oily rags ignite garage fire The garage of a home in north Nanaimo was damaged by smoke and fire on Saturday. Firefighters responded to the home in the 5500 block of Lost Lake Road shortly before 2 p.m. after rags used for refinishing furniture ignited. Smoke and minor fire damage was confined to the garage and no one was injured. Rick Kwasnecha, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said rags covered in oil can combust when kept in a confined space as heat builds up.

Veins of coal buried deep underground lured many residents to Lantzville to work in the mines. Lantzville pays homage to its mining history Sept. 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during its annual Minetown Day celebration. The event features a pancake breakfast, a parade, hay rides, a street market with local artisans, games and live entertainment. The annual Lantzville’s Got Talent showcase is back again this year, and people enjoy the performances of local artists. “The talent contest is quite popular,”

said Lantzville Coun. Denise Haime, who also serves on the Minetown Day committee. Haime said one of the best things about Minetown Days is it’s free. Admission, the rides and activities and the entertainment are all free. There is a fee for the pancake breakfast and food vendors. “You don’t have to come with a load of cash,” she said. “It really is a family

South end residents along Lavender Lane wanted change. They wanted to reclaim their neighbourhood and create a sense of belonging. It began with a conversation between a few residents. They started an initiative to clean up a derelict laneway between Needham and Watkins Street in Nanaimo’s South End. The lane ran behind their backyards and residents weren’t happy with the activities going on behind their homes. Madilynn Rotar, who lives along the laneway, said the area was overgrown and it was attracting undesirable people to the area. “We thought the only way to deal with that was to reclaim the property,” she said, adding the project allowed the neighbours to get to know each other. The first neighbourhood cleanup was held in late July, with neighbours completing the second phase of their project on Saturday.

“We had a derelict laneway, and derelict attracts derelict, and we decided that was enough,” said Angie Eyford, one of the neighbourhood project organizers. She said the project is creating a huge sense of belonging and a sense of accomplishment for the residents involved. “We’ve worked really hard on this,” she said. On Saturday, residents were busy tilling soil, planting lavender and other flowers and painting fences to revamp the lane. Neighbourhood children painted birdhouses all morning to place along the fences. “It’s all about building community and a sense of belonging,” said Eyford. Brent Rotar, who was hard at work tilling soil for most of the morning, said the project is about reaching out to your immediate community and bridging the gap of community involvement. “I think it is something that a lot of communities would like to do but they don’t have a method or tool for bridging the gap,” he said. He said the project has started a domino effect and there are other residents living along nearby laneways who also want to do similar initiatives.

An abandoned campfire triggered a bush fire in north Nanaimo on the weekend. The blaze broke out near Robin Hood Park Saturday morning shortly before 9:30 a.m. about 100 metres into the woods from the end of Sir Lancelot Place. Fire spread to an area covering approximately 40 square metres by the time firefighters were able to get on the scene. Rick Kwasnecha, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said crew’s efforts were hampered by the long lay of hoses – about 100 metres – through the woods to get water to the fire. “It was quite large,” Kwasnecha said. “It was human-caused, a campfire – possibly from young adults partying there – and left abandoned overnight.” He said the fire could have been much worse if it had become more established. Firefighters worked on the fire until about 12:30 p.m. and then returned again in the late afternoon to check for any remaining hotspots that might have been missed in the initial operation. Nanaimo Fire Rescue dealt with a second campfire in the bush near the 3400 block of Rock City Road at about 11 p.m. “That was teenagers with a bonfire,” Kwasnecha said. “They were there at the time. It was just and illegal campfire – same scenario, different outcome.”

homas Gemma has climbed back in the saddle to take his second run at the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. The coast-to-coast ride that starts from Vancouver Sept. 5 and ends 17 days later on Sept. 21 in Halifax is one of the worlds largest and longest cycling events raising money to battle childhood cancer. Gemma will cover some familiar ground. Over three days he will ride 500 kilometres of the 1,100-km leg from Vancouver to Calgary via Kamloops, Rogers Pass and Lake Louise. Riders cycle as two teams in a relay style, each team alternating one day of riding with one day of rest. Each rider averages about 165 km per day. Some participants of the ride cycle across Canada, while others, like Gemma, are referred to as “stage riders” who cover shorter sections of the journey. Gemma took on the challenge last year partly because he works for Sears and the opportunity was there. Plus he has been involved with other cancer fundraisers. “I’d been involved as a director with the breast cancer Run For the Cure,” Gemma said. “I sort of stopped doing it because it took so much time when my children were young. Now that they’re teenagers, I have some time again and found cycling as a fitness option. And then I thought, what a great opportunity to work with kids who have cancer and I feel fortunate that my kids don’t.” About 1,700 kids are diagnosed with cancer each year and there are currently more than 10,000 Canadian children fighting cancer or living with the consequences of cancer and its therapies. “Chemotherapy is a nasty cocktail of poisons,” Gemma said. “It actually affects kids’ development and kids end up with long term disabilities because of the chemo and so on.” One of the most moving things, Gemma said, is seeing and hearing

about how resilient children can be while dealing with cancer while at the same time supporting their parents struggling emotionally to come to terms with their children’s illness and treatment. Gemma has been a cyclist for about 15 years, but until last year he hadn’t ridden the distances he encounters on the cancer ride or experienced the level of training needed to prepare for it. He also had to train by himself without the benefit of having more experienced riders or a trainer. “I had no comparison in terms of what to expect with the other group,” he said. But the experienced riders were welcoming and helpful and quickly got Gemma up to speed on anything he missed in training. Gemma is entering this year’s ride more experienced and better prepared. He has already ridden about 2,000 km in the past several weeks of training at speeds averaging 29 km/h, which is the average speed that must be maintained to ride with the group. Training to maintain such a high average pace is hugely physically demanding and time consuming. Each rider must raise a minimum of $5,000 to participate. Last year Gemma raised $7,000 and hopes to surpass that figure this year. Last year’s ride raised a total of $5 million to fight childhood cancer and about $14 million since it started in 2008. The fundraising continues until the end of September. “I recognize that there is a ton of need for all sorts of different charities – from the food bank here, which needs our help, to every illness that you can imagine,” Gemma said. “You can’t afford to give money everywhere, but you need to decide where you can make an impact. Sailing revamp no big surprise Cuts to B.C. Ferries three major southern routes should come as a surprise to no one. The writing has been on the wall for years that with increasing costs and decreasing numbers of people sailing between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, the status quo could not continue. The quasi-private corporation needed a major adjustment in the way it did business, and that meant choosing between reduced service levels or increasing fares to pay to maintain the current service level. It chose the former and will be saving close to $1 million annually by cutting 98 sailings on the Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay, Duke Point-Tsawwassen and SwartzBay-Tsawwassen routes beginning in October. Departure-Bay-Horseshoe Bay will have 18 round trips reduced and Swartz-BayTsawwassen will have 32 trips scrapped. The biggest change comes at Duke Point-Tsawwassen with 48 round trips cut back over the fall and winter. Having that route’s last run on a Saturday at 3:15 p.m. will likely cause headaches for a number of travellers, but they can’t say they weren’t warned. Sailings on the route were often threequarters empty and there were times crew members outnumbered passengers. It’s no way to do business and changes would have been made long ago in the private sector. B.C. Ferries suggests anyone wanting to travel to, or leave the Island, use the Departure Bay or Swartz Bay terminals. Some will no doubt cry foul, arguing the ferries are a link in Canada’s transportation system and should be available anytime they choose to use it. But those same people are up in arms when ferry fares increase. It can’t go both ways. Transportation off the Island is still available, only now it takes additional planning on part of the public. While in Red Deer, we sat through the worst (or best depending on how amazed you are) storm I had ever seen. The lightning and thunder were instantaneous – directly over the house, shaking not only the windows but my wife (she is not a fan of storms) as well. As for things I didn’t like about Alberta, bugs would rank right up there at the top. We quickly found out that the family-friendly (“green”) mosquito repellent that works here on the coast, doesn’t cut it in Alberta. If it wasn’t for the hundreds of dragonflies feasting on the bugs, I don’t know what we would have done. But, by far the best thing about our trip to Alberta was finding out my stepdaughter, Krista, and her man, Peter, are going to be parents in February, making us grandparents for the second time. Nutritional evidence lacking Unions remain To the Editor, Re: Alternative to market food costly to health, Letters, Aug 25. The belief in the superiority of organic food is widespread. That does not make it true. The Food Standard Agency in the U.K. released its report on this subject in 2009. Organic food is no healthier and provides no significant nutritional benefit compared with conventionally-produced food, according to a new, independent study funded by the Food Standards Agency. Alan Dangour, who led the review by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said, “Most studies were based on the hypothesis that eating organic food is beneficial to health. Looking at all of the studies published in the last 50 years, we have concluded that there’s no good evidence that consumption of organic food is beneficial to health based on the nutrient content.” Organic food supporters also like to vilify food from genetically modified crops. Yet, there has never been a single documented case of harm from consuming food containing GM ingredients. Even the skeptical Europeans come to the conclusion that GM foods are safe. Walkway bylaw needs enforcing To the Editor, Middle-aged people and young children are biking, skateboarding and in-line skating on the waterfront walkway, even where the shops are. Overhearing one middle-aged mother telling her children that the ban on this was “stupid”, and more or less encouraging her children to continue riding (three abreast) was disturbing. Especially as the children seemed intelligent and quite willing and understanding of the importance of not riding their bikes there. Obviously, the only people who encourage this and continue to do it are the stupid ones. However, it is suggested that more prohibited signs are displayed and acutal fines are issued. As said, middle-aged people seem to be the big offenders, so one feels they can afford to fork out the cash. Refinery should be built in neighbouring province To the Editor, Re: Black Press owner proposes Kitimat oil refinery, Aug. 21. K David Black has a good idea for building an oil refinery in Kitimat, but the bitumen (which is the worst to clean up) would still be piped from Alberta through our wilderness to the refinery. This would not solve the impact of oil spills on our environment. The refinery needs to be built in

Alberta, not B.C., and then the product could also be shipped East where right now they are buying it elsewhere. Why can’t all Canadians benefit from our oil? As for thousands of jobs here as Enbridge has claimed, Alberta is always advertising for workers, so how many B.C. residents are already working in Alberta in the oil fields? Tax-free coupons for gas would encourage tourists To the Editor, In B.C., we have magnificent scenery, mountains and protected waters. In past summers, an armada of U.S.-flagged motor launches and yachts of all sizes sailed past Nanaimo on their exploration of the waters of the Salish Sea. Our hotels and resorts boomed, but fewer and fewer U.S. pleasure boats have appeared in recent years. I would estimate visits are down by about 90 per cent this year, and our tourist industry seems to be suffering as a result. Perhaps it is the high cost of gasoline that is putting visitors off. Perhaps it’s the excessively high prices of liquor or, perhaps, it is just the poor U.S. economy. Certainly things are way down compared with years past. It seems to me tourism should be encouraged, and I suggest ‘tax-free’ coupons for gasoline and alcoholic

beverages be issued to visitors at the border, depending on length of stay and means of transport. Coupons could only be redeemed at point of sale if a valid passport supported the name on the coupons. It would cost little and would benefit the entire B.C. tourist industry. A.J. Berry Nanaimo

Balanced position on oil missing from NDP leader To the Editor, The balanced position B.C. Premier Christy Clark has taken on the Enbridge oil pipeline is not only commendably tough and well-considered, it also stands in sharp contrast to the opportunistically rash stance taken by NDP opposition leader Adrian Dix. Long before any formal evidence for judging the project’s pros and cons, and its risks and benefits, had even been presented, Dix saw fit to prejudge the entire project and give it the “Dix nix” heave-ho. But why, then, has he been silent on the other major oil pipeline project proposed for B.C. by Kinder Morgan? He hasn’t given that project his “Dix nix” stamp of disapproval. On that project he’s adopted a wait and see approach, which is exactly what he criticized Christy Clark for on the Enbridge proposal. The origins of Labour Day in Canada trace back 140 years to 1872 and a parade held in support of a Toronto union’s strike for a 58-hour work week. Back then, union activity was illegal in Canada and 24 workers were jailed for their role in the strike. An outcry of support and rally on Sept. 3, 1873, led Prime Minister John A. MacDonald to commit to repealing the law banning union activity, helping to lay the groundwork for real progress for working people. Since 1894, when Prime Minister John Thompson declared Labour Day an official holiday, working people have celebrated the gains and honoured those who fought for the rights and privileges we enjoy today. Unfortunately, the last 30 years has seen a troubling growth in inequality in our society. From the Second World War through 1980, working people shared equally in the gains of productivity with shareholders and owners through higher wages and improved purchasing power. But, from 1980 forward, while productivity increased at an even greater rate, workers’ wages stagnated and all gains of productivity have gone to owners and senior executives. Today’s middle class family feels like it is having a harder time making ends meet, because it is. Meanwhile, the rich have never been so rich. On this Labour Day (Sept. 3), however, I look forward with optimism that we are turning a corner towards greater equality. Frontline workers in B.C.’s public service are negotiating for fair and reasonable wage increases. And despite the intransigence of Premier Christy Clark and Kevin Falcon, polling consistently shows women and men across the province support these workers in their simple demand to not fall further behind or lose rights they and their predecessors fought to secure. British Columbians want a fair and equitable society, and recognize the frontline workers in our

schools, hospitals and social and government services are an important part of that society. In the private sector, workers are once again negotiating agreements that see them share in the gains of the productivity and the value of their work. Recent agreements between workers and companies like Rio Tinto and Teck Resources have put more income in the pockets of workers, and boosted the fortunes of local communities. Tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy are too often invested in overseas companies or simply held as cash, creating no local economic activity. But when working people earn more, they tend to spend it in their own communities. Just ask business owners in Trail, where employees of Teck Resources, represented by the United Steelworkers, negotiated a $10,000 signing bonus earlier this year. Trail businesses in every sector, from auto sales, restaurants and retail immediately reported a significant increase in economic activity in the community. These agreements are setting a pattern for wage growth for all working people, whether in a union or not. This is good news for working and middle class families and it’s also good news for our economy. Viable communities are anchored in a strong middle class and it was unions that were responsible for the development of the middle class. This Labour Day, as investment bankers and CEOs fight to hold on to a greater and greater share of the wealth working people generate, unions remain as relevant as they were 140 years ago when our predecessors fought to reduce the work week to fewer than 60 hours. We continue to fight for better work and better lives for all Canadians, and I am hopeful we are turning a corner toward better times for us all. ◆ Jim Sinclair is president of the B.C. Harvest time celebrated Farmers are preparing to reap what they’ve sown this fall as harvest time approaches in the city. To celebrate the locally grown and wild foods harvested in the city, the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association is hosting its second annual Harvest Festival Sept. 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Old City Quarter. Admission is free. The festival includes a fresh food fair, live entertainment, educational displays and interactive presentations, a Top Chef and CanSculpt competition. The Top Chef competition pits nine downtown restaurant chefs against each other in a friendly cook-off, which requires them to use only local, natural ingredients. People can purchase $1

Jayden Holman, 16, entered the PNE Star Showdown contest in Vancouver with his guitar, his voice and no expectations and was blown away when he won the youth category on Aug. 18 and then came in top overall winner on Aug. 21. “I felt afterwards that I had just poured my heart out,” he said. “It’s kind of cool to have won it because [Bublé] won it.”

His first-place finish earned him $5,000 cash and a chance to represent the Fair at the PNE at the Canadian Youth Talent Competition during the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions National Conference this November in Winnipeg. The Grade 11 Wellington Secondary School student was selected to compete at the Showdown from more than 400 YouTube entries. Eleven competitors vied for the top three spots in each category – kids, youth and adults – and the nine finalists competed for title of overall winner. “It was huge, a big stage,” said Holman. “I was very nervous, but I’m pretty confident once I start singing.” While it was a big audience

for Holman, it is not the biggest he’s been in front of – he played Sunfest in Duncan earlier this summer, a large country music festival that features well-known musicians such as Dierks Bentley. Other events he’s performed at this summer include Canada Day in Maffeo Sutton Park, Parksville Beach Festival, Nanaimo Marine Festival, Ladysmith Days and the Vancouver Island Exhibition.

“This is my first season of being really busy and doing lots of stuff,” said Holman. He’s loved music since he can remember and even before that – his father took him to a David Gogo concert when he was three and the story goes that after seeing his interest, the drummer invited Holman up on stage to hammer out a beat on the drums. “I’ve always loved it,” he said. “All my uncles play and sing. In kindergarten and Grade 1, I would pretend I was a rock star.” Holman started putting the dream into action in Grade 6 when he learned to play the guitar and two years later, he took singing lessons. He plays everything from jazz to country.

“I’m all over the map,” said Holman. “If it sounds good, I usually play it.” Holman also writes his own songs, which he hopes to put together in an album sometime in the fall. He describes his own music as kind of pop-y but also sort of country at the same time. “It’s definitely its own thing,” said Holman. Gary Holman said his son has a natural aptitude for music that he’s combined with hours and hours of practise every week. “I’m so happy for him, to see all his hard work pay off,” he said. “He’ll play for $10, he’ll play for $100, he’ll play for free, he just wants to play.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Vocalist picks up another win during fair

MIKAILA TOMBE sang Respect by Aretha Franklin.

Mikaila Tombe earned respect for her singing ability after winning a local contest with Aretha Franklin’s hit song. Tombe, 15, won first prize in this year’s Vocal Challenge at the Vancouver Island Exhibition, which carried a prize of $500.

Participants were given the opportunity to perform their songs on the Community Festival stage as part of the opening ceremonies at the VIEX. All finalists chosen were invited to perform their songs on the mainstage on the last day of the fair at Beban Park. The contest was formerly called Songbird. Class registration open Headliners offers new classes in music and theatre this fall. Singing Essentials is a workshop led by Doug Dodd and Alexandria Maillot where participants sing with a live band. Class runs Tuesdays, 3:305:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 25. The theatre program will focus on The Little Mermaid for students age seven to 11 with a final performance on stage. Rehearsals run Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 20. Teens in the theatre program will tackle Legally Blonde, with rehearsals Thursdays 3:30-5:30 p.m., and Sunday 3-6 p.m., beginning Sept. 21. Audrey was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England on October 13th, 1934, only child to Arthur and Lillian Ellis. Audrey is survived by her three children and their spouses Caroline Klaver, Sharon & Bill Earthy, Graham & Nicole Johnson, seven fantastic grandchildren Giles, Derek, Malcolm, and Olivia Klaver, Walker Earthy, Hannah and Logan Johnson and Dr. J. Edward Johnson. Audrey always walked a spiritual path with interests in Catholic, Buddhist and Benedictine values and beliefs about humanity, healing and peace. She will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren and many people from all walks of life who fondly remember her compassion and kind spirit. There will be a Celebration of Life held Friday August 31st for 2pm to 4pm at Bethlehem Retreat Center, 2371 Arbot Road, Nanaimo BC. Paralympian races toward more gold Michelle Stilwell a favourite going into third Games

ichelle Stilwell is, without a doubt, the face of the Paralympic Games around these parts. It’s a face that’s invariably smiling, and if all goes to plan, she may soon have two more gold medals to smile about. The 37-year-old mother from Nanoose Bay is in London this month to compete in her third Paralympic Games. She won her first gold medal in Sydney in 2000 as part of Canada’s wheelchair basketball team. She had to give up hoops for health reasons, and has since excelled on the track, qualifying for the 2008 Games in Beijing and winning gold in both the 100-metre and 200m races. So she’s a triple gold medallist. She holds world records in all her events. She’s a hall of famer and indisputably a fan favourite. And yet she won’t ease off. Just the opposite, in fact. “I just love a challenge, so every time I can shave a few hundredths of a second off the time, it

For the first pre-season game, the Nanaimo Clippers couldn’t have hoped for a much better result. The city’s B.C. Hockey League team beat the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 8-2 on Sunday night at Frank Crane Arena. “It was a pre-season game so there was sloppiness and mistakes made by both teams,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “We still have a lot to learn but it was nice for our confidence to get a win early like this and hopefully we can build on it.” Nanaimo struck for three unanswered firstperiod goals and never relinquished control. “We got some point shots through and they found their way in the net,” said Vandekamp. “Obviously that gave us some momentum and some confidence early in the game.” Reid Sturos scored the goal of the night, winning a race to create a breakaway, then deking the Bulldogs goalie. The V.I. Raiders played a complete game and they completely dominated. Nanaimo’s Canadian Junior Football League team defeated the Kamloops Broncos 59-17 on Saturday in the Interior. “We needed a game like that,” said Matthew (Snoop) Blokker, V.I. coach. “We needed a good old-fashioned Raidersstyle win.” If Saturday’s win was old-fashioned, then call it a vintage performace from quarterback Jordan Yantz. The Raiders’ passer reached a personal milestone of 100 career touchdown throws, and he did it in masterful style, going 21-for-27 for 398 yards and six TDs. “I’m really proud of Jordan Yantz,” said Blokker. “To be the first quarterback to throw for 100 touchdowns in CJFL history, I think is absolutely

Stilwell bringing a plan to Paralympic start line

somewhat flexible for the unexpected. You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t totally let the unexpected throw you off your game.â&#x20AC;? Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty familiar with the field of competitors she will see in London in her T52 division, and goes in as the favourite. Maybe sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll win double gold again. Maybe sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll win double gold again, and be even better. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I push myself hard enough, I know t h e r e â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s r o o m f o r improvement.
