The party, dubbed Project X, had been expected to draw at least 2,000 partygoers on Saturday night. The RCMP first got wind of the party when the children of several officers saw the Facebook invitation, said Cpl. Holly Marks, who speaks for Langley RCMP. Marks said that some of the extra per-

Come find your I’ll Have Another Two years ago, a yearling named I’ll Have Another sold for $11,000. This year, ridden by B.C.’s own Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the hearts of horse racing fans around the world. He won more than $2.7 million in prize money for his owner. And it all started at a sale just like the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Annual Yearling & Mixed Sale. I’ll Have Another is an enormous success story, but there have been many other less publicized stories. Hundreds of prize winning horses have come from the CTHS-BC sale throughout its 60-year history. Strait of Dover was purchased in the 2010 sale and the horse has since won $750,000, including this year’s Queen’s Plate, Canada’s most prestigious race. And prominent local horse owner Glen Todd purchased Taylor Said for $9,000 in the 2009 sale. It has earned $278,000, including a huge win in the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs in Seattle earlier this year. See the future of thoroughbred horse racing in B.C. Find your I’ll Have Another. Everyone is welcome to come down this Monday and Tuesday to see future prize-winning horses at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, B.C. Whether you simply want to see the powerful thoroughbreds and discover what it’s all about, or you’re looking to buy your first horse or fifteenth horse, everyone is encouraged to visit and spot the next big winner.
Metro Vancouver mayors are bracing for a new clash later this fall over whether to sacrifice planned transit expansions in Surrey and Langley in order to avoid a TransLink property tax increase set for next year. Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender said he would be “very, very surprised” if a nearly complete provincial audit of TransLink finds enough savings to plug all of the funding gaps facing the cash-strapped system. TransLink froze several projects in April, including a new Highway 1 rapid bus service from Langley over the new Port Mann Bridge and a new B-Line express bus down King George Boulevard in Surrey, after mayors voted to scrap a $30 million property tax hike for the next two years. But that vote wasn’t legally binding, so a new one would have to take place on a formal TransLink supplement this fall that could rescind the tax hike and potentially make further cuts. Only a huge raft of savings uncovered by auditors and TransLink’s internal belt-tightening efforts would allow the region to proceed with the express bus projects and avoid the higher tax. “We don’t have to find just $30 million,” Fassbender said. “We have to find close to $75 million. The reason is the gas tax is down significantly.” TransLink estimates its fuel tax take from the 15 cents per litre it collects within Metro Vancouver will bring in $120 million less over the next three years than it has counted on in its Moving Forward plan. It’s not clear why less fuel is being bought in the region, but out-of-region buying, possibly amplified by cross-border shopping, is thought to be one factor. Fassbender said he fears actual service cuts are a real possibility for TransLink if the property tax hike is repealed. He said he will vote against such a supplement and lobby other mayors to defeat the measure, proceed with the tax hike and hopefully launch the new bus routes. “Myself and other mayors south of the Fraser will be fighting hard to keep the property tax for the next two years, “ he said. The TransLink mayors’ council never intended that the tax hike go ahead when it was approved a year ago – it was merely to be a backup in case negotiations with the province on new funding sources, such as a vehicle levy, collapsed. But confidence of a new deal turned out misplaced as the province this spring refused to consider new sources until a full audit is complete. Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom has said he remains optimistic the Highway 1 express bus will be in place when the new Port Mann Bridge opens. “It would be ludicrous to suggest the millions of dollars that have been spent to provide the infrastructure for rapid buses wouldn’t be used,” Fassbender said.

Heavy steel door too much for would-be liquor store robbers Natasha JoNes Times Reporter
A heavy steel door may have been enough to thwart a break and enter at Berezan liquor store in Willoughby on Sunday morning, Aug. 26. The culprits left emptyhanded, but surveillance tape has given Langley RCMP images of the suspects, a man and a woman, and the Submitted photo white cube van they likely Langley RCMP are looking for the driver of this cube van, as part of an expected to use to haul away investigation into an attempted store break-in on Sunday in Willoughby. their loot.
The cube van bears a black crown logo on the side of the truck box. The break-in attempt occurred at about 6:30 a.m. Alerted by the security alarm, Langley RCMP officers went to the store in the 19900 block of 84 Avenue where they found damage to a steel door. It appeared that someone had tried to cut off the hinges, said Cpl. Holly Marks who speaks for Langley RCMP. “Fortunately the culprit was
not able to gain entry and nothing was taken,” Marks said, describing the damage to the door as “significant.” If you recognize the suspects or the cube van, RCMP would like you to contact them at 604-532-3200. The organizers of the Terry Fox Run in Langley City have unveiled a new street banner. The banner reminds the public about the Terry Fox Run which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16. Thanks to a community grant, the committee was able to buy the banner, which is 36 feet long. Incorporating some of the old and some new elements of the Terry Fox Run, the banner will be raised across Fraser Highway at 208 Street on Sept. 4. New graphics feature a bust of Terry Fox made up of inspirational words, the iconic photo of Terry Fox is there as well. “It’s one more component that we wanted to add to make the Run sustainable,” said Lilianne Fuller, who chairs the organizing committee in the City. “Last year we were fortunate to add a more permanent route and this year we have something to help us advertise the event year after year.” There is still much to do before the event, and Fuller praised Langley City staff. “They have been

Local businesses have been very supportive and they have stepped up tremendously to give us what we need to ensure a successful run,” she said. Terry Fox Runs all over the province are organized by committees of volunteers who must fundraise for every expense. This ensures that all the money raised on run day goes to the Terry Fox Foundation. “Eighty-four cents
of every dollar raised goes to fund cancer research — one of the highest rates of return of any charity and this is a statistic of which I am very proud,” Fuller said. The Terry Fox Run will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16 beginning and ending at Spirit Square in Douglas Park. As usual, participants will be given a choice of one, five or 10 kilometre runs. A family friendly event, there will be face-painting for the kids and the Langley
City firefighters will be in charge of the concession. Volunteers are still needed for a number of tasks on Run day, and the committee is especially looking for a volunteer with social media skills. The Langley City Run has a Facebook page that needs attention during the two weeks running up to the event. A general information meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. If you can help, call Fuller at 604 533-0638.

Another gravel truck was involved in a crash on 16 Avenue, this time near 200 Street, on Aug. 15 at noon. Two days earlier, there was a multivehicle pile-up on the busy road. On Aug. 7, a gravel truck flipped onto its side and into a ditch near 248 Street on 16 Avenue, causing major traffic delays for hours as it took some time to pull it out. The road is a direct route for gravel trucks bringing and taking loads from pits in Abbotsford, the main hub for soil and gravel in the Lower Mianland. This busy road is also a popular horse trailer route. Many residents are calling for safety changes on the busy road or more police enforcement of gravel trucks that speed. Some are suggesting roundabouts might improve things. This road became an alternative for many more vehicles once the Township installed speed humps on Zero Avenue. Langley RCMP say they are challenged to do speed
enforcement, by the design of the road. There is no shoulder along 16 Avenue so it’s very
unsafe for officers to do speed traps. There also isn’t anywhere to pull the trucks over. Even people’s driveways prove difficult, said police. But police recognize there needs to be something done

Marois’ musings
A price to pay for U.S. shopping
he Quebec election campaign, at about its halfway point, has brought out the xenophobic nature of at least some Quebeckers. The most prominent example is Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois. According to the polls, she has the best chance of becoming premier. She has some provocative ideas about Quebec and its future. Her musings during the campaign include the following: — Quebec should prohibit anyone from running for office at the local and provincial level, if they do not pass a French proficency test; — Citizens would be prevented from displaying religious symbols, other than the crucifix, which according to her is a cultural, not a religious symbol; — Young people from a Frenchspeaking background who have finished high school would not be allowed to attend English-language CEGEPs (community colleges); —- A charter of secularism would be put into place; and — A referendum on separating from Canada would be held if just 15 per cent of the population signed a petition calling for one. While she has backtracked on some of these statements, keep in mind she’s in the midst of an election campaign. Marois is trying mightily to inflame language fears among nationalist Quebeckers. She is trying to convince them that the French language is under immediate assault. Only by circling the wagons, and doing all government can to prevent people from speaking other languages, can it be preserved, or so she claims. Her concern for the future of French has some validity. Quebec is the only large French-speaking area in North America. However, given that millions of people there speak French as their first language, it is hardly at death’s door. Using religious and racial phobias to try and gather enough votes in an election is deeply disturbing. It is particularly insulting, coming from a party that claims to be open-minded and tolerant. It is a far cry from the days of PQ party icon Rene Levesque. If the PQ wins, its stated goal is to have a referendum on separation from Canada as soon as possible. That is understandable. Let Quebeckers choose to leave Canada if they wish. However, such xenophobic utterances do not bode well for Quebec’s future, as part of Canada or as an independent country.

anadian consumers are heading south for an overnight stay and shopping to take advantage of new cross-border allowances and the high dollar. Cross-border trips in June, the first month the higher exemptions took effect, were up to levels not seen since 1972. Way back then, the dollar was also above par, and gas prices were also low. Taking a trip to the U.S. was a breeze. It seems many are willing to spend the time in border line-ups and pay for the extra gas to save about 14 per cent on many items. They also want to have access to a wider variety in clothing and other consumables. The downside is that local retailers are taking a hit, and when they do, they cut back on new hires and those much-hated taxes (which pay for health, education and other important programs) take a hit, as well. Retailers in border communities like Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford are particularly hard-hit. Canadians are understandably looking for bargains. But there may come a time when the lure of cheaper U.S. products will come back and haunt them. A long-term decline in retail jobs and declining tax revenue can do some major damage to the B.C. economy. Tax shortfalls must be made up somewhere, so that means everyone (including cross-border shoppers) will pay more. With fewer jobs, it will be that much harder to pay those added taxes. More likely though, as the U.S. economy rebounds as housing sales are cautiously expected to do, the loonie will eventually drop in value. This will greatly diminish the advantage of shopping down south. —Tri-City News (Black Press)

Langley Times
Editor: One should be careful for what one wishes for. In reference to The Times editorial about ICBC (Aug. 21), I would like to point out how a little bit of research work by the writer would have helped ferret out the truth. The truth of the matter is that ICBC is in its third year of a $500 million transformation project to bring its 1972 computer platform into the 21st century. Of the 200-plus managers hired in the past four years, only 31 were actually there to do day-to-day management and the balance were hired specifically for the transformation project. Over the next one to three years, most of them would have been let go as their contributions to the project ended. I also have to question the writer’s opinion, as far as having true competition for
our auto insurance premiums. The editorial complains about all the dollars being siphoned off by the provincial government to pay for ongoing services provided in this province. Would the writer be far happier if those same dollars were siphoned off to pay the shareholders of those numerous private companies, and have the money dispersed around the world as dividends? As far as ICBC being non-competitive, one should look closely at the facts. Granted, we do not have the cheapest rates in the country, but have you looked at the price of real estate in Vancouver lately? In addition to all the road improvements that ICBC contributes to on an annual basis to reduce accidents (private companies certainly don’t), ICBC also offers one
of the only true tort systems in Canada for bodily injury claims. That might be the reason our basic rates are going up 11 per cent, not the lack of competition. Maybe the editorial writer would rather we have a system like Ontario, where there is a constant battle between the government and the companies over rate increases, with companies pulling out when they can’t make money. Don’t get me started on the billion dollars of fraud involved around their bodily injury system, or the 40,000 people waiting for arbitration on their bodily injury claims. ICBC may have its warts but one should be careful what one wishes for. Andrew Tablotney, president, IBABC (Insurance Brokers Association of BC)
Coleman shows potential for area farms
Editor: Over the past many years, I have been involved in promoting many events in the Langley area. Eighty per cent of Langley is in the Agricultural Land Reserve. Agriculture in the Fraser Valley has always been a struggle for many farmers. Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman is hosting a free appreciation barbecue for his supporters on one of Langley’s local farms. Coleman is clearly demonstrating how local farmers can improve their situation. Langley farms are very well located to
take advantage of the event hosting market. Langley sits as the hub of over two million people in the Lower Mainland. Langley farms can nicely provide a venue for public and private assembly use for business, political and family use, both public and private. This is a win-win for everyone. Today, many people live in small condos and in apartments, and the ability to have a day in the wide open country inviting many friends is a dream come true. It could be a picnic and barbecue with tents as Rich Coleman is doing, or a sports
team, a wedding, a business meeting, a show and shine — the list is endless. The positive connection between rural folk and city folk could not be more relevant than at this important time. I am sure that the City and Township will want to get behind this, as it means certain prosperity for the entire community. Thank you to Rich Coleman for his eadership. See you at the farm. Wally Martin, Murrayville
Editor: I would like to reassure Gordon Wakelyn (The Times, Aug. 21) who wrote about the “green bin” notices. When I received the first notice, I called the Township to explain that we composted all food and garden waste, except bones
and woody hedge clippings. The man I spoke to told me he would make a list of home composters, and took down my details. He also told me to wrap the bones in newspaper and put them with hedge clippings in the required bin.
I also put a large notice on my garbage can about my compost, to avoid any ticket under bylaw no. 4845.

Kitimat refinery idea makes a lot of sense Editor: Media mogul David Black has my full support for his proposal to build a $13 billion oil refinery near Kitimat to process heavy oil from the Enbridge pipeline. I’ve had the same idea myself. Why should we let the Asian countries buy our Canadian crude oil and refine it for their markets when we could add value by refining it here in B.C. and shipping them the finished product? This is a strategy that would create local jobs for our own citizens and address the environmental concerns around oil tankers travelling in B.C.’s coastal waters. The
I know for a fact that Alberta wants to do this because I worked on a project in East Edmonton (a stone’s throw from the refineries in Fort Saskatchewan) that would have seen it become a reality. And as long as Enbridge meets the conditions and standards set out by the premier, moving heavy oil from Alberta through a pipeline would be a heck of a lot better than shipping it by rail or truck. That’s why B.C. should be working with Alberta on exactly the kind of joint interprovincial venture Black is proposing,
a venture that would bring value-added tertiary oil refining to B.C., along with the heavy oil pipeline. Shipping gasoline, jet fuel and other refined oil products by tanker is just as practical as shipping crude oil, and a lot safer from an environmental standpoint. So let’s not waste this opportunity and the revenue and jobs it could bring to our province. There’s a lot we could do here in B.C. with a piece of the oil industry pie. Roop Virk, Chilliwack
Fill needs close by Editor: In a letter published on Thursday, Aug. 16 in The Times, reference was made to an employee of a local business referring the writer to a “local” bird store in South Surrey. There is a much closer store called Wild Birds Unlimited, which is located just 10 minutes away from the commercial core in Langley. We are at Happy Face Village — 8590 200 Street. We have solutions for all your backyard nature needs. Bruce Hutchison, owner, Wild Birds Unlimited of Langley
Dollar signs dance for Township Editor: Re: Blooms fading for Gibbs Nursery (The Times, Aug. 23). First off, there is no way the nursery has been there 60 years. I think it was built some time in the 1970s. Before that, the property housed a little Depression-era, three-room house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Achinghead, who were an old retired couple. Their last name always fascinated me. Anyway, I know it would be too much to ask that the Gibbs buildings be removed and all the trees left on site for a little walk-through park on that corner. I know the very first thing the Township will do on taking over the property is clear-cut the site. So how about just expanding the Langley Events Centre parking lot, to help prevent all the parking on 80 Avenue and 202A Street, when there are events at the LEC? But the dollar signs are already dancing in the Township’s mind. They are thinking a hotel, that I’ll bet will want a casino in it. Any takers? Brian Johnson, Willoughby

Arboretum backed by volunteers Bent Hansen
Times contributor
There are many groups of people who work in relative obscurity for the good of their community. We call them volunteers, because they work for the good of others, without expecting public recognition or financial recompense. One such group is very close to seeing some real results from many, many hours of work. It is a small group consisting of fewer than a dozen people, who over the course of the past couple of years have assisted the Township of Langley in planning and developing a public park. This is the Derek Doubleday Arboretum, which is located on the border between the City and the Township of Langley, along Fraser Highway, just west of the airport. Here are the highlights of their achievements thus far: — They took on the responsibility to work with the Township of Langley to develop the park; — They formed a society to which the public can belong; — They involved many members of the Rotary Club; — They were granted funds
from the two municipal governments to start developmental planning and design, as well as significant construction; — Through the efforts of two students, and many donations from the public, a walkway of remembrance has been almost completed, with a total of 158 trees to be planted. A gravelled walkway wends its way along the trees through the arboretum; — Many hours of volunteer labour has been contributed; — Thousands of bulbs, plants, trees and shrubs have been donated and planted; — Many donations of labour and materials have been received; — Public access from the highway and parking space for 80 cars has been completed; and — Two viewing platforms have been constructed. It is important that the public be aware of the efforts of this small and dedicated group. People need to know what has happened and what the future holds for this developing park. At present, the following is being planned: — A number of benches
will be ordered that will placed appropriately around the park; — A cenotaph will be completed this summer, partially funded by the federal government; — Public facilities are planned: — An education centre is planned: — Explanatory signage will be placed throughout the park; and — Additional walkways and plantings are planned. Over time, it is the intent that this park will serve as a place for citizens to relax, to learn if they wish about plants and trees, and to enjoy the colours and textures of different foliage throughout the year. Above all, it is meant to be a convenient place for people of all ages to enjoy. The volunteer efforts have been effective, and more volunteers who are interested in this project are always welcome. Firefighters focus on recycling New program makes it easier for staff to recycle at Township fire halls Saving lives? Yes. Protecting property? Check. Caring for the environment? Definitely. A program designed to reduce waste and encourage recycling has been implemented by Langley Township firefighters, who are doing their part to look after the world we live in. The Responsible Program is the Township’s corporate initiative to cut down on waste as an organization. Introduced at all seven fire halls, it’s intended to make it easier for staff to recycle at work. “When we’re not fighting fires and saving lives, we are recycling,” joked Captain Scott Brewer. Brewer worked in the garbage industry for 10 years and was eager to apply his knowledge of waste and recycling to all areas of his life, including his new job at the Murrayville fire hall. When he joined the fire department several years ago, he was adamant about recycling at work and put in a makeshift program for staff. In 2012, the program was expanded by the engineering division with

business profile
Peninsula runners – walk • jog • run • PLAY! Peninsula Runners is the Fraser Valley’s only independent running store. Unlike their competitors, Peninsula Runners is from the Fraser Valley and has been supporting the Langley community for 11 years through the events and clinics they put on or sponsor. By supporting a mom-and-pop-type store like them, you are supporting your neighbors and their family rather than a helping a big corporation’s CEO buy another vacation home or get a big bonus. Peninsula Runners would really like to thank those who have supported them over the years and hope to continue to be an important part of the community here in Langley. If you haven’t been to Peninsula Runners in Walnut Grove recently, you will be in for some surprises. The store has undergone a refit and has been completely updated. The square footage has been reduced but this has had no effect on the number and range of products available. “It's much sportier,” said owner Phil Ellis. “We’ve been here for more than 11 years so it was time to make some changes,” he said. Peninsula Runner's slogan “Walk, Jog , Run, Play” and their motto “We Fit Feet...” describes what they are about. Rather than

selling products they are selling running and physical activity as a lifestyle. Whether you walk, jog, run or play it is all about staying healthy and active. Peninsula Runners can help make sure you get the “fit” for your feet to allow you to continue in those activities. They pride themselves in taking time to find out what your needs are and looking at your feet to determine which shoes will work best for you. Peninsula Runners carries ALL the best brands such as Asics, New Balance, Nike, Brooks, Saucony, Mizuno and more. Not only do they have the best selection of athletic footwear and technical clothing, they also carry a wide assortment of sports accessories including Bodyglide, pedometers, speed and distance monitors, heart rate monitors and more. Peninsula Runners is race central with many current publications, pamphlets and lots of upcoming race information available. Phil Ellis, an avid runner, opened the second Peninsula Runners store in Walnut Grove in 2001. Ellis is joined by Kathie Schellenberg who is the manager and clinic leader. Ellis describes Kathie as a role model for his customers. She began running 12 years ago after having had four children. She says she began running to get healthy, get fit and
stay sane. “It’s a great day for a run,” is her motto. Peninsula Runners fall clinics are starting again on Wednesday Sept. 12. For those new to running or returning after time off, the 101 clinic should be the choice. Carol and Michelle continue to introduce you to this walk to jog program. It offers a safe, gradual introduction to running. For those who already run but would like to improve their speed and strength, the Running 201 clinic is for you. It incorporates different challenging workouts that can be fun and rewarding. New this fall will be a power walking clinic for those who prefer walking but still want a challenge. Finally, their very popular 301 clinic is in their final weeks of preparation for upcoming fall races. If you are an avid runner and want to enjoy all clinics offered by Peninsula Runners throughout the year, become a member of the PR Running Club. Additional perks for members include a 10 per cent discount of regular priced store merchandise and priority on special offers. Peninsula Runners also sponsors and organizes many community events,
including the recently-held ninth annual Fort Langley Half and 5 km. This popular annual event was the idea of Phil and Kathie who saw a need for a local half marathon in Langley, as their was no event like this 11 years ago. Upon doing some bike rides up the infamous Armstrong Hill (east of Fort Langley), Phil thought Peninsula Runners should do a race that goes up there... that is how the challenging but very scenic course for the Half Marathon came to be.
If you’ve just begun your fitness journey or if you’ve been a runner for most of your life come in and see what the friendly people at Peninsula Runners have to offer. Today’s kids are busier than ever before. Commitments in the classroom coupled with a full slate of extracurricular activities have ensured that many of today’s school-aged children don’t have a minute to spare. While it’s important for kids to embrace extracurricular activities, parents know it’s not always easy helping kids find the right activity that allows them to grow outside the classroom while still focusing on their responsibilities inside it. In addition, kids’ interests tend to change at the drop of a hat, so something they want to do today might bore them come tomorrow. To help kids choose and manage their extracurricular activities, consider the following tips. • Emphasize that schoolwork must come first. Kids get excited about extracurricular activities, especially ones involving sports where they get to spend time playing with their friends. But parents should emphasize that school still comes first and that, if schoolwork starts to suffer, participation in extracurricular activities will be put on hold until kids get their studies back on track. • Go over coursework at the start of the school year. Examine a child’s course load before choosing an extracurricular activity. It’s important to do this each year, as coursework gets more difficult as children get older. Just because a child could handle a couple of after-
school activities a week when he or she was in fifth grade does not mean such a schedule will be as manageable when the same child reaches high school. Go over coursework and requirements as early as possible, preferably before the school year starts, so you and your child can get a grip on what can and can’t be handled with regards to extracurricular activities. • Get a grasp of the commitment required of a given activity. Extracurricular activities require various levels of commitment.

Today’s kids busier than ever continued
Varsity sport participation, for example, typically requires daily commitment and often requires kids to participate on weekends or even the sport’s “off-season,”. However, volunteering with a local charity likely won’t require such a large commitment and such charities often allow volunteers to choose their own schedules. Parents and their children should consider the level of commitment an extracurricular requires and choose the activity they’re most comfortable with. • Don’t overlook the social benefits of extracurricular activities. When helping kids choose an extracurricular activity, it’s important to leave the ultimate decision in their hands. After all, kids won’t get much of the experience if they’re reluctant to participate. However, parents
should not overlook the social benefits of extracurricular activities. Consider those benefits when helping kids choose activities, especially if they’re likely to choose solitary activities like learning a musical instrument. It’s good to encourage such interests, but also try to encourage a balance between solitary activities and ones that encourage socialization with peers, such as a sports team, debate club or volunteering with other students at a local charity. • Don’t forget the fun factor. If kids aren’t having fun or showing any interest in a given extracurricular activity, then help them find another one. Kids need time to have fun away from school just like adults need time for fun away from the office. Weigh how enjoyable a given activity figures to be for your youngster before signing them up.

Q: What inspired you to become a dentist? A: I am very creative and love working with and helping people. In dentisry we often find people are in pain or are nervous about coming to see us. I love being able to use my creative side to design beautiful smiles and my compassionate people loving side to put people at ease and feel comfortable in my care. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I like creating. I am an artist at heart with painting being my passion. I enjoy spending time with my family. Q: What is most important to you about the services you provide? A: Many people have had traumatic dental experiences or just don’t like coming to the dentist in general. I am inspired when I have a nervous patient at the start of an appointment who leaves saying “That was great, are you accepting new patients?” To which my reply is “YES!”

Parents want their kids to be as healthy as possible. Whether tailoring kids’ diets to include healthier foods or encouraging their youngsters to be physically active, parents often go the extra mile with regards to the health of their children. Are there indicators that a child is nearsighted? Kids likely won’t tell their parents that they are struggling to see distant objects clearly, so it’s important for parents to look for indicators that a child might be struggling with myopia. Kids who are nearsighted might squint to see objects that are far away, including the television. One of the telltale indicators is how a child behaves in the classroom. Children who tell their teacher they need to move closer to the chalkboard should be taken to the eye doctor. Parents who suspect their child might be nearsighted can talk to their child’s teacher and ask if the teacher feels the child might be struggling with his or her vision. Such struggles can affect how a child performs in school.Children who get frequent headaches might also be suffering from nearsightedness. Doctors recommend that kids have their eyes examined at six months, three years of age and prior to entering the first grade. But even if kids have passed
previous eye examinations at each of those benchmarks, it’s best to take them for another exam the moment a vision problem is suspected. Children who appear to be struggling to see distant objects clearly should be taken for an eye exam. When a child is diagnosed as being nearsighted, the doctor will likely prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses. Poor hand-eye coordination could be the result of a vision impairment. Children who tilt their head to one side to improve vision might be suffering from a vision problem that makes it difficult for them to look directly down. Vision problems can negatively affect how a child performs in school as well as in social situations. Though such vision problems are not always preventable, parents who can identify them can greatly minimize their effects.

Artists banking on interest Public is invited to browse temporary gallery inside former Coast Capital building Brenda anderson Times Reporter
Tucked away in what was once most likely a bank manager’s office, Langley artist Sheila Patzke is quietly dabbing paint on a colorful, if somewhat abstract, landscape. She’s working with Yupo — a synthetic, water-proof paper — and it’s a technique that has taken a bit of getting used to, the artist admits as she applies water colour to the non-absorbant surface with a fine brush. At the same time, the ability to push the paint around on top of the paper creates some rather interesting effects, she notes. As one of about 20 artists in residence at the temporary gallery, which has been set up inside the the former Coast Capital Savings building on the Fraser Highway one-way, Patzke is taking advantage of a bit of quiet time between visitors to focus on her work. But the building is open to the public and visitors are not only welcome, but encouraged to wander in and look over the dozens of paintings hung on

The former bank building is being leased by the Langley Arts Council until Sept. 28. They, in turn, are renting out individual spaces to the artists. There are so many corners to peek into and pieces to examine that a person can’t hope to see everything in one visit, but something that would be dif-
ficult — neigh, impossible — to miss are the half dozen lifesized fibreglass horses standing around the lobby. Part of the Horsing Around Langley project, some of the pure white moulds will be moved to the studios of the artists who will design and paint the animals following themes of their choosing. Others will likely be painted on site. Standing apart from the larger horses is one foal.
Already, LAC president Rosemary Wallace and fellow artist Lalita Hamill have set to work on a design which strives to encompass all of the arts. Included in the design, is a series of piano keys which will run along the foal’s arched neck. Its hooves will be adorned with ballet slippers, the women reveal. Once they’ve finished the piece, representing as many of the arts council’s member
groups as possible, the women are planning to mount the colt on a small pull cart and take it to events as a means of advertising. Normally, the LAC is based out of Michaud House on 204 Street — and it still is, said Wallace — but since the Artist in Residence Gallery opened in early August it has temporarily shifted its centre of operations. It is open during the day, Monday to Friday, but Wallace is considering opening it on a Saturday to gauge response from people who aren’t able to come in during the work week. And it will definitely be open during the Langley Good Times Cruise In car show on Saturday, Sept. 8, she said. For the artists, it’s a chance to share ideas and draw inspiration from one another. “The artists love being with other artists,” said Wallace, “Everybody feeds off everybody. There are no egos in this building.” By late afternoon, clay artist Gail Simpson has tidied up her workspace for the day, but in the next cubicle over, painter Robin Bandenieks, continues to work on a portrait of Alva Myrdal — one of only 15 women who have been awarded a Nobel prize since the first ones were handed out in 1905. The artist is depicting each of them in a collection of small oil paintings. Bandenieks and Simpson say they are enjoying the opportunity to be around other artists. Response has been good, they say, but the women agree that in this case, at least, more is better. Like Hamill and Wallace, they’d be thrilled to see more visitors coming through. “There’s also room for a few more artists,” said Wallace, adding the gallery offers the perfect opportunity to introduce the LAC to potential members. “We’ll make room.”
Horseplay is encouraged Several life-sized fibreglass horse moulds still up for grabs On Thursday, Aug. 16, the Langley Arts Council held its grand opening and reception for the sponsors who purchased a life-sized horse sculpture as part of the “Horsing Around Langley” project. “The public art project is designed to foster community collaboration, bringing together the agricultural, art and cultural communities, as well as the corporate community and the public at large in a year-long venture that we anticipate will be exciting in each phase of the program,” said LAC president Rosemary Wallace. The grand opening provided an opportunity to show off the brand new spaces available to
local artist to create and display their artwork. Among those artists participating are Robin Bandenieks, Judy Vanderveen and Patricia Burnette. There are a few horses left in need of sponsorship. “We are looking for more sponsors but we also want to share this gallery with the community. Come in and have a look at the work of our artist in residence,” said Wallace. The Artist in Residence Gallery is located in the old Coast Capital building at 20550 Fraser Hwy. It is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. until Sept. 28.

In an age of reality TV and makeover programs where public opinion defines one’s identity, what hope is there for all of the conventionally untalented and unpopular creatures who seek fame? Fail, lose, die or change — those are the options for the contestants of Miss Cosmos: The 53rd Annual Intergalactic Space Bride Competition. Completely dependent on audience votes, these refugee aliens must decide between their true identities and their survival at this year’s Vancouver Fringe Festival (VFF). That’s where you come in — to help cast your vote for your favourite space bride in this Bright Young Theatre production. It’s the brainchild of North Delta’s Melanie Reich, a UBC Fine Arts in Acting graduate and cohorts Joanna Williams and Ashley Noyes of Langley, Christine Bortolin (Burnaby), and Jordan Krebs (Kirkland, Wash.) Bright Young Theatre created and produced the show as part of the VFF’s Onsite Mentoring Program. All ages are encouraged to participate in choosing their favourite cosmic bachelorette. The winner will earn the right to continue her existence on Earth, as an honorary 1:11 PM human being. The unfortunate losers will be jettisoned into space. hen one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” So said famed 19th century American naturalist, John Muir. When you tug on a plant, it is almost always attached to something. Yet most people don’t know what that thing is, or why it is critically important to our planet. Larry Peterson knows. He’s been studying these things since the 1960s at the University of Guelph. I had the privilege of meeting Larry and hearing him speak at the recent Botanical Society of America meeting I attended in Columbus, Ohio this July. Larry is a down-to-earth guy. In fact, as he started his address he said he’d spent his “whole life underground.” When we think about how the good, green earth works we often think about connections – about food chains. The thing that is attached to plants is virtually a food chain in itself. “How come I have never seen such a thing before?” you might ask. “Are they really that common?”

The gold was the first ever in Paralympic equestrian for Canada. “There are two different feelings to it this time,” Barwick said in an email to The Times from London last week, where she is preparing to represent Canada for a second time at the Paralympic Games. The Games begin Aug. 29 and run until Sept. 12. “First, there is lots of pressure now,” she said. “There are new expectations from the world since they know I am capable, so now I don’t want to let people down. “Before, I was still

There was no sick horse to deal with this time. Prior to the 2008 Paralympic Games, Langley’s Eleonore Elstone was faced with that problem when her horse became ill on the flight overseas to Hong Kong, site of the Games. “I felt quite challenged,” said Elstone in an email interview

Elstone departed with the rest of the Canadian para-dressage team nearly three weeks ago in preparation for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. “That experience taught me to plan better for possible scenarios,” she said. “But in the end, horses are not machines and anything can happen.”

The 60-year-old Elstone began riding ponies in her native Germany when she was seven. Within five years, she was riding competitively in all three Olympic disciplines — dressage, eventing and show jumping — in the German young rider championships. She emigrated to Canada in 1974 and continued pursuing her competitive riding dreams. But a riding accident five years
later left her with a compound fracture that destroyed her ankle. Following the accident, she shifted her focus entirely to dressage. Elstone, who eventually settled in Langley after first living in the Interior, began in para-dressage in 2006. She won each of her classes at that competition and represented

She credited the sponsorship she receives from Parelli, as well as support from Sport Canada, Athletes CAN and the Own the Podium program for allowing her to not work and just focus on training. Another change has been her horse. In 2008, she rode Maile to the podium, but in London, she will be aboard Off to Paris, a 2001 Chestnut Oldenburg mare owned by Equine Canada, and Ferdonia 1, a 1999 German Oldenburg mare Barwick owns. Barwick has loaned Maile to one of her fellow Team Canada riders, Ashley Gowanlock (see story page 27).

Gowanlock no longer a new kid on the block Gary ahuja Times Sports
While four years hardly makes someone a seasoned veteran, there is a different feel this time around for Ashley Gowanlock. “In Beijing, I was the new kid on the block,” she said in an email from London, where she is preparing for the Paralympic Games. “(In 2008), I was happy that I had made the team but I had no idea what I was coming up against or what to expect so I went into the Games wide-eyed and on sensory overload,” she explained. “This is my second Games and I have learned the ropes.” She is considered a medal contender this time around in the paradressage competition. “I have been to several more international competitions with good results and have become quite comfortable with the whole process of how a big horse show runs and have a much better understanding of what my role is on the team.” “Just having a Games under my belt makes the unknown a lot less stressful.” The 25-year-old from Langley has been competing internationally since 2007 but she has been riding horses
since she was two years old. At an age when most kids are learning to talk, Gowanlock, who was born with cerebral palsy, was riding horses for therapeutic purposes. Riding horses is beneficial for those with cerebral palsy as it helps the rider with their balance and core work as the horse’s movement mimics the rider’s natural movements. She has been competing internationally since 2007, when she earned top marks in the under21 and under-25 age categories and eighth place in the freestyle class at the world para-dressage championships in Great Britain. “I have been taught from the very beginning that there is nothing I cannot do,” she said.
