Questions surround potential mill sale BRIAN KIERAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
where they attended to an injured motorcyclist.
Question marks are appearing beside the name of the Edmonton developer who has promised to buy the 400-acre Catalyst site, establish a new industrial park and create up to 600 jobs. Last week Harold Jahn, 42, owner of Pacifica Deep Sea Terminals, agreed to pay $8.6 million for the abandoned Elk Falls Mill site. The deal with Catalyst Paper is expected to close in one week. Now the Mirror has learned that at least two similar Alberta projects proposed by Jahn are not off the ground. And, one municipal official in the Athabasca region said: “It’s a good thing that your alarm bells are ringing.” On Monday Jahn countered, “It is frustrating working in the (Alberta) North…there’s a lot of gossip going around.” Catalyst CEO Kevin Clarke has praised Jahn as an experienced, job-creating developer, “with the capacity and an industrial concept that will fully utilize the site’s infrastructure.” In 2007, Athabasca County sold Jahn more than 30 acres that the developer promised to transform into a truck stop,

Trouble: Searchers help accident victim Continued from Page 1
The first call came in at 3:50 p.m. regarding two overdue hikers. They were hiking in the Crest Mountain area, planned to traverse two other mountains and then descend to the Elk River Main. When the two experienced hikers, both in their 20s, were 24 hours overdue, they were reported missing. “Our initial assess-
ment led us to believe they had not left enough time to complete the hike as well there were some very steep and rough terrain areas that could have slowed them down,” said search manager Grant Cromer in a news release. The first part of their journey was on a marked trail, but after that it degraded to a unmarked route with high ridges and then
descents and ascents of steep valleys. Search and rescue dispatched members by road to set up base at the trail head and also sent up a chopper. The helicopter team was able to land at the top of Big Den Mountain and found a log book buried in a rock cairn. It had an entry from the hikes that stated they had run into trouble finding a route to descend from
Big Den and had lost a day of travelling. They were forced to turn around and this caused them to lose a day of hiking. “We knew they were close in the area based on the log entry so we flew back along the route and found them in a meadow,” said Cromer. The two were transported by helicopter back to the trail head parking lot and then

departed the scene. Then, on the return road trip on Highway 28, the search teams were first on scene for a motorcycle accident near Echo Lake. A female rider lost control of her bike on a wide corner and went off the road. She was ejected from her bike and landed down a short embankment. The search volunteers administered first aid and assisted
ambulance paramedics in getting her out of the bush.
Caution urged Cromer also issued the following advisory to hikers: “The message we want to pass on is know the route you intend to travel and pack sufficient supplies: Food, shelter, adequate clothing, water. “The temperatures
this time of year can be down to the single digits in the mountains and even freezing near the peaks. In this case the terrain got the better of the (two hikers). They were experienced, but the route was very rough and it took an entire day of unsuccessfully scrambling around trying to find a safe route to descend, which led to the shortage of food for the return trip.”

Annual walk raises funds for education
SPCA resident needs support to get surgery The BC SPCA Campbell River Branch is seeking the public’s help to fund urgently needed surgery for Penny, a seven-month-old border collie mix. Penny requires canine cruciate ligament surgery for her left hind knee. If left untreated, Penny’s injury will likely cause crippling arthritic problems for her in the future. Campbell River branch manager, Kathleen Embree, says the surgery is absolutely essential for Penny’s well being. “At this young age, Penny has the potential to live a happy, healthy life if she receives the surgery. However, if left untreated, this type of condition only gets worse,” she says. Unfortunately, the cost of Penny’s surgery is $1,180. “This includes a significant discount already provided by the veterinarian but it is just beyond our ability to pay at this time given all the other animals in our care,” says Embree. Each year the Campbell River SPCA Branch rescues nearly 1,200 abused, neglect, injured and homeless animals. Embree says Penny was originally surrendered to the SPCA because her former guardian said she had become “too big,” but is otherwise a wonderful, happy puppy. “If Penny receives surgery, she will make an excellent companion for a loving guardian who has experience with high-energy dogs – and has plenty of energy themselves,” says Embree. “We really need the public’s support to help us care for Penny and so many other wonderful animals at our shelter.” If you can help, call 250-286-6131. Please visit the Campbell River SPCA shelter at 490 Merecroft Rd. or visit spca.bc.ca/support.
Seven-month-old Penny requires ligament surgery. The border collie mix currently resides at the SPCA shelter and needs help from the public to get her operation as well as a new home.
On Saturday, Sept. 8, join Campbell River business leaders and community members at the ninth annual Women For Women (W4W) Trail Mix Challenge and help single mothers pursue their educational dreams. Event proceeds support single mothers enrolling or continuing their education at North Island College’s Campbell River campus. Since its conception in 2004, event organizer and founder Shelagh Germyn has raised $20,000 in bursaries. Race participants can choose from the five- or 10 km trail, as well as a short fun run. It all happens at the Carihi field, starting at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 12 p.m. Registration is $35 and will open at 8 a.m. Contact Germyn at 250-9231788 or find them on Facebook at Women For Women 5k/10k Trail Mix Challenge and “Kids Run.”

convenience store and residential development. County Manager Gary Buchanan said the deal included conditions and timelines that Jahn failed to meet and the property was taken back in 2010. Jahn said the property is still in the name of one of his companies and there are still plans to develop it. Here in Campbell River, Jahn said he will bring some of his existing companies to the new industrial park including developer of algae based solar cells, a lithium battery
manufacturing facility, an ocean wave energy equipment fabrication and an electric vehicle assembly plant. “My intent (is) to create jobs in smaller communities,” Jahn told The Mirror. That’s exactly the same thing he told the Athabasca Advocate in 2010 when he was wooing the Village of Boyle in his role as the head of “Prosperity Industrial Park.” This project would involve the transformation of 135 acres into about 20 industrial lots. “The companies that will likely move into the area are a lot
of distribution, light manufacturing and energy services companies,” Jahn told the Advocate. “If we can attract some of the larger manufacturing companies that we’ve been working with, there could be 500-600 positions available,” Jahn said. “My focus has always been on smaller communities.” On Monday, Boyle’s Chief Administrative Officer Charlie Ashbey said the land is still in the name of the original owner and the concept “has not been realized.” “I’d love it if Jahn would show up and go
ahead with the project he planned here,” Ashbey said. The village official added, “The last time we talked, in 2011, Jahn said he was pretty busy with another development.” Jahn said he has a big financial commitment in the Athabasca region and is still “moving ahead” with his development plans for the property in a year. “People don’t see dirt moving and they think you’ve walked away,” he said during a phone interview Monday. Catalyst Paper was contacted but did not offer any comment.

has been identified as a contaminated site by the ministry and prior to redevelopment contamination would have to be assessed and addressed.” Jahn replied, “The current state of the site will be our liability. When we have gone through the sale closing process we will meet with the government’s environmental officials and with the (Catalyst’s) environmental consultant.” He said the “rejuvenation” process at the mill site will include water and sewer technologies that should help reduce the operating costs on the prop-
erty. H a n e m ay e r t o l d the Mirror, “We have received some investigation reports from Catalyst for the Elk Falls Mill. However, they have not been reviewed so we are not aware of the nature of contamination at the site.” In his memo Hanemayer stated: “Upon decommissioning of the mill, Catalyst Paper submitted a site profile to the ministry. Based on the information in the site profile we required a site investigation for the site. “This has the effect of freezing the abil-
ity of the local government (the City of Campbell River) from issuing demolition, subdivision rezoning, soil removal, development or development variance permits until the site has received an Approval in Principle for a remediation plan or a Certificate of Compliance of remediation completion. “Any new owner would have to adequately address site contamination prior to obtaining the local government permits,” Hanemayer wrote. City Manager Andy Laidlaw had no information about contaminates.

Kayakers get the pipeline message BRIAN KIERAN
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A group of Alaska kayakers bound for the most southern reaches of South America arrived in Oyster River this past week bearing a message for all British Columbians: Protect a precious way of life on your coast; keep the oil tankers at bay. In June, the group of 12 Juneau friends embarked on the experience of a lifetime, a 14,000 kilometre expedition modestly dubbed “A Trip South” that will take them to Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina, sometime in 2014. The adventurers, aboard ocean-going craft designed and built by Seaward Kayaks in Chemainus, have visited several remote settlements on their journey down the B.C. coast and through the Inside Passage. Expedition org anizer Chris Hinkley, a 23-year-old mechanical engineer, says when he left Juneau the proposed Enbridge pipeline and the threat of oil tanker traffic on the coast was “on the back burner of my brain.” Then, in nar row Grenville Channel, the

expedition bumped into a retired engineer touring coastal settlements by boat. It was Brian Gunn of Campbell River, president of the BC Wilderness Tourism Association. He raised the Enbridge alarm and that really got the attention of the kayakers. “ T h e u n d e rly i n g focus of our trip is documenting interesting communities and the rich connections between people and their places throughout the Pacific Coast,” Hinkley says. “We are not a group of environmentalists out to document the pipeline fight, but we encountered so much passion we want to share it.” When they reached Hartley Bay they realized something “special” was happening. In Hartley Bay, at the mouth of Douglas Channel about 80 kilometres southwest of Kitimat where a proposed shipping terminal will load Enbridge crude, the kayakers met Gitga’at councillor Cameron Hill. “All of a sudden we realized this is an issue we have to talk about. Cameron has such a deep connection with his history, but he is

also very knowledgeable about the modern world and understands how the whole pipeline issue came about and what the political game is all about. “Hartley Bay is a place where stories matter, where children know how to smoke fish and love the taste of oolichan oil. This is a place where roads are made from wooden planks and grocery stores do not exist. Whether time here is spent filleting fish or harvesting seaweed, an appreciation is born in the process. “I believe that somewhere deep in every human lies a craving to connect to the natural world. Hartley Bay embodies this connection. Its residents respect the resources that sustain their lives. “As we continue our journey south, Cameron’s final thoughts have continued to resonate with me,” Hin-
kley says. “He told us: ‘There is no other way to say it, if the pipeline goes through, our way of life is dead.’” Today, the kayakers are back on the water and headed for Chemainus where they will return their “borrowed” kayaks to Seaward Kayaks. Five of the original 12 adventurers will climb on bicycles for the trip through the U.S., Mexico and Central and South America. Roads per mitting, they plan to follow the Pacific Ocean as they head toward the southern hemisphere with the end goal being Tierra Del Fuego. “Our timeline and planned routes are very tentative because our focus is the adventure itself rather than the destination,” Hinkley says. “Maybe we’ll even get to Antarctica.” Follow the journey online at www.atripsouth.com

Our View
Taxpayers fund B.C.’s carbon trust On occasion government spin slips into a deceptive state and that is where B.C.’s much-lauded “carbon neutral” status resides today. In the annual report of the government-controlled Pacific Carbon Trust (PCT) we read this claim: “The most notable accomplishment of the last fiscal year...was the achievement of carbon neutrality for the provincial government.” In fact, our carbon neutral status is really a tax-shifting sleight of hand dispensing corporate welfare to less-thanneedy business barons. In 2007, the government called on its agencies to reduce carbon emissions to zero, but that would be an accounting exercise because you can’t operate hospitals and schools
without leaving a carbon footprint. So, the government created the Crown corporation to turn the magic of taxation mathematics into a greener B.C. PCT’s job is to find public and private money to buy carbon credits and reinvest the cash on greenhouse gas reduction projects. Jordan Bateman, B.C. director of the Canadian Tax Federation, says, “Only 12 private companies or individuals bought carbon credits last year for a measly $54,050. The rest of the Trust’s $14 million budget was funded exclusively by taxpayers.” On Vancouver Island those tax dollars included $870,000 from the Vancouver Island Health Authority and $58,000 from School District 72 here in Campbell River.
That’s our precious tax dollars that should have been earmarked for much needed upgrades to hospital and school infrastructure. Who got the cash last year? Canfor, Interfor and Lafarge for “switching fuels”; Timberwest for “improved forest management”; and, Encana for “state-of-the-art drilling.” Obviously, these corporate bottomline initiatives would have been undertaken regardless of PCT handouts. In fact, the vast majority of projects were underway before the Trust decided they were worthy of taxpayer support. This is just corporate welfare under the guise of green washing B.C. and it isn’t right.

Some ‘original’ idea After reading “Forest minister sees opportunity,” I felt compelled to write. I believe a sawmill in Campbell River would be a wonderful idea. Further to that I would suggest maybe to offer a company a Tree Farm License with a supply of trees to mill into lumber. There is one called TFL 47 that was given to CrownZellerbach in 1950 in exchange for jobs. This timber was to be processed at a pulp and paper mill to be built in Duncan Bay. In 1956, they added a sawmill to also produce lumber instead of turning all this fibre into pulp. This mill ran until 2008. The first plan was a revolutionary idea and created a lot of jobs. This was the core of the town of Campbell River for 50 plus years. Skip ahead to 2012...now a company called Timberwest (one of the largest raw log exporters in North America) owns the rights to this government timber (approximately 221,151 hectares). At the moment, they cut down the trees, roll them onto a ship and export them to our friends down south and in the east. This corporation does not even own a sawmill. How do you think this could have happened? That someone can cut and export our trees? I realize this must create about two jobs per tree, but perhaps we could get a little more value from our children’s land. Jim Erickson, Campbell River

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views
NDP leader Adrian Dix has announced that one of his first acts as premier would be to withdraw B.C. from the joint review of the Enbridge pipeline proposal from Alberta to Kitimat. The two-year federal-led review will be mostly done by next May, but Dix proposes to start a new provincial assessment to examine the B.C. portion. He doesn’t know how much it would cost, and under questioning he all but admitted the intention is to study the pipeline to death. Fresh from a summer tour of the pipeline route to reaffirm solidarity with its opponents, Dix is hardly in a position to consider anything but maximum resistance. As Premier Christy Clark did in
her showdown with Alberta over benefits, Dix hinted that provincial permits for river and wildlife crossings would be made as expensive as possible, if not refused. The same fate awaits the Kinder Morgan plan to twin the existing Trans-Mountain oil pipeline to Burnaby. Dix left the impression that he would undo the years of work that have gone into bringing some rational sense to environmental approvals that can be, and have been, dragged out for years. The B.C. hearings would provide another platform for opponents, and more complaints to justify refusal at the provincial level, to go along with court cases and direct-action protests.
Speaking of which, the frontal assault by agitators at the federal Enbridge hearings has mostly petered out. After 4,000-odd people were signed up to speak, most didn’t bother, and some hearings were cancelled. Apparently slacktivists such as “Jonathan L. Seagull” and “Cave Man” didn’t make it out of their Vancouver basement suites to tell the panel oil is bad. Professional environmentalists are now wringing their hands over Ottawa’s decision to leave smallerscale reviews to the province. This means, for example, that there won’t be a duplicate federal review of the urgently needed refit of the John Hart Dam on the Campbell River.
One reader suggested that environmental pioneer Roderick Haig-Brown is still spinning in his grave over the damming of this legendary salmon river. Perhaps, but that was in 1947. Does it make sense today to lard pointless bureaucracy onto a reconstruction that replaces wooden pipes and provides earthquake protection, without expanding river impact? NDP environment critic Rob Fleming hammered away at the B.C. Liberals about this in the spring, reminding them that Auditor General John Doyle had exposed a lack of resources in the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, even before Ottawa’s changes. Continued on Page 9

Taxpayers have a right to voice their opinions in spite of what others say Regarding the Aug. 16 article on Mike Gage’s comments about the spending of $240,000 on Simms Creek when, in his estimation, it is good for another five years. This begs the question, if we are hard up for money why has this been given the thumbs up? This gentleman with
25 years experience in road construction surely must know what he is talking about. As for the councillor taking exception to his comments about that and other decisions taken by city staff, this man is entitled to his opinion. Council may not like what they hear, but that goes with the territory.
Last time I checked we have the privilege of free speech in this country and for this councillor to say, “I take great exception to a member of the public coming to our city council and denigrating staff to the extent of calling them incompetent,” and then she rebukes Mayor Jakeway for not
better policing council meetings, just demonstrates that the taxpaying citizens are treated with contempt by this councillor. Are some councillors so full of their own importance that they forget why they are councillors? They are there to serve us, the public, and I think some who have been

in the job for too long have forgotten that. As soon as a councillor starts to believe we should “put up and shut up” needs to step down at the next election because as I have said before the tail is wagging the dog and that is not acceptable.

Fletcher: NDP is right on one thing Continued from Page 8
Fleming makes it sound like a huge new burden has been dumped on B.C. False. Provincial assessment already must be done with the participation of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Transport Canada, the
provincial ministries of natural resources and energy and mines, and of course aboriginal communities. This is why it’s so long and expensive. And don’t be fooled into believing that a federal review would go out and count the tadpoles and caribou
again. It’s only the desk jobs that have proliferated. There weren’t just two levels of duplicate review, but three. Earlier in their mandate, the B.C. Liberals exempted major projects such as mines and energy generation from local government
control, citing the “provincial interest” similar to the federal authority over projects that cross provincial borders. I agree with the NDP that B.C. environmental assessment needs more resources, in particular to do the follow-up on approved
projects, as called for by the auditor general. Forest management needs more money too. All the more reason not to waste resources on political gestures. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter for Black Press. E-mail tfletcher@ blackpress.ca

Tyee Club pulls for soldiers BRIAN KIERAN
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Seventeen Canadian Armed Forces personnel from all over Vancouver Island, ill or injured members of “Soldier On,” converged on Campbell River for a day of fishing in the world famous Tyee Pool. The Soldier On program, established in 2007 as a joint initiative of the Canadian Paralympic Committee and the Department of National Defence, uses sporting activity to improve the quality of life of current and former Canadian Forces members who have suffered major injuries. To say thanks to these Canadian heroes, the Tyee Club hosted the unique salmon fishing experience on Friday. Several members of the Tyee Club volunteered to row and everyone enjoyed a potluck dinner. Event organizer and school teacher Mark Lagos started planning this event many months ago after meeting a military veteran at Southgate School. “I wanted to make sure he knew how much we appreciated his continual sacrifices,” Lagos said. “He had been injured while performing peacekeeping duties in Afghanistan and it made me think that this guy, and others like him, are really deserving of our thanks. “We want to give a huge thanks to our local businesses and club membership who have helped out with this. The community support, including donations of accommodations and food, has been phenomenal,” Lagos said. Victoria-based Master Warrant Officer Brian Helpard, in charge of Soldier On in the Pacific Region, said the event was “fantastic” even though the big ones weren’t biting. “We have a tendency to withdraw inside ourselves. It’s just great to be engaged like this. And, any recognition from society is always a bonus.”

Who’s the top composter?
BRIAN KIERAN/THE MIRROR
Canadian veterans were treated to an afternoon of fishing the Tyee Pool on Friday, thanks to members of the Tyee Club.
The battle has been won. After clearing the hurdles and busting the myths around fruit flies, compost juice and rotting food, the six families in Campbell River’s Compost Challenge are ready to show the community how fun and easy composting really is. Between July 1 and Aug. 22, six families in Campbell River embarked on a 30-day compost jour ney, filming their trials and tribulations of the daily challenge in reality-TV style. Judges will review the compost and video footage this week and will score the families based on: who produced the healthiest compost, generated the least amount of garbage, and who captured the funniest and most creative moments of their journey on video. The families have composed composting songs, taken their
compost camping, and one family even found some dressedup vegetables having a party in their composter! The winner of the 30-day Video Compost Challenge will be announced today, Aug. 29, and the family will receive $500 in groceries (not to mention the fame of being Campbell River’s first-ever Compost Challenge winner). Footage from the Video Compost Challenge will become part of a professionally-produced film debuting in October 2012. The film will be featured on Shaw TV, the City’s You Tube channel, and shown in Campbell River schools and at 2013 community film festivals, including the Earth Week Film Festival. In the meantime, judge for yourself at 2012compostchallenge.blogspot.ca

Culvert work means detour from Galerno
Repair cost is more than $190,000
KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Drivers don’t have to worry about speed bumps on Galer no Road anymore. That’s because as of today the 30 kilometre an hour speed zone will be closed to traffic for nearly three weeks while the city works to repair a culvert under the road. The speed bumps, cement median, and slow speed zone were put in by the city last month to reduce the pressure on the Simms Creek culvert, which is deteriorating faster than expected. T he culver t was scheduled for rehabilitation next year, but an engineer found it’s breaking down to the point it can no longer carry the required

Springbok crosswalk The city will be conducting traffic counts on Springbok Road to determine if there’s a need for a crosswalk. Coun. Larry Samson last month asked city staff to look into putting in a crosswalk in the 1050 block to connect the sidewalk with the bike path connector. As part of the city’s sidewalk in-fill program, city hall has created pedestrian-friendly walkways but Samson says they don’t include safety measures. “I think as part of the sidewalk in-fill program there is the necessity or the need to have safe crossings for our families and safe crossings for our children,” he said. The city will
COUNCIL BEAT go ahead with pedestrian and vehicle traffic counting to see if the area meets the criteria for a crosswalk.
Library talk The city will talk with Vancouver Island Regional Library about developing a proposal for a new downtown library which will include potential costs and a timeline. Campbell River is currently fourth on regional library’s priority list, or four or five years away from a new library, but that could change. If the city is prepared to contribute property
or participate in capital cost financing, the city could speed up the process and bump itself up, according to Ross Blackwell, city land use manager. The city’s current library, built in 1970 with renovations in 1987 and 2003 is 9.68 square feet but should be 31,000 square feet based on the area it serves. Regional library staff made a presentation to council in May and acknowledged that libraries across the Island are too old, overcrowded, and in some cases inaccessible. Council identified the Campbell River library as a strategic priority at a council meeting Aug. 14 and directed staff to discuss a proposal with Vancouver Island Regional Library.
Know anyone in the community that is making a green difference? It’s time to celebrate outstanding environmental action with the city’s 11th annual Stewardship Awards. Nominate individuals, groups, developers, business, industry representatives and youth for outstanding environmental achievements by Sept. 10. This year’s award categories include: ■ Air quality...is there a wise wood burner near you? ■ Pesticide free... who’s using integrated pest management strategies, or gone organic? ■ Water/Energy Conservation...who’s making the most of our precious resources?
■ Habitat Protection/Creation...who’s protecting and enhancing natural spaces? ■ Waste Reduction... who’s a role model when it comes to reducing waste? ■ Other Areas of Environmental Excellence...your creative ideas go here! “So many people volunteer their time and energy to improve the health and beauty of Campbell River’s natural environment,” says Mayor Walter Jakeway. “It’s important to recognize the people who have a vision, a passion and then make the effort to care for the outdoors.”

“We’re looking forward to recognizing the efforts of people who promote the quality of life that makes Campbell River such a clean, green and spectacular place to live,” adds Councillor Larry Samson, one of the judges for the stewardship awards program. To nominate an awards candidate, download an application form from the “What’s New” section of the City’s website (www.campbellriver. ca). Paper copies are available at City Hall. For more information on these awards, call Terri Martin at (250) 286-5711 or e-mail

INFORMATION
It’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roderick (Roddy) Wade Jurreit at the age of 25 on August 22nd 2012. Roddy was born April 12th, 1987 to his parents Dwaine Jurreit and Sandra Hoekstra in Merritt, B.C. Roddy was a kind and gentle person who always loved to play pranks. As a small boy he loved building lego and playing video games. When he was outside he always liked exploring, hiking, and building traps and pretending to catch bears, he also loved karate and basketball. Roddy had a great love for animals and they loved him. As Roddy got older he loved hunting trips and quading with his family. He had a 1952 GMC pickup that was his dream truck and always wished to have it as a show truck as he was proud of his truck. He loved watching movies with his family and family gatherings. When he started his work career as a teenager he worked at a gas station then than went on to a ďŹ sh packing plant in Port Hardy, later on he worked alongside his dad at the family paving company. He enjoyed paving especially running bobcat. Roddy was predeceased by his grandfather Carl Jurreit and his uncle Steve Venuti. Roddy will be lovingly remembered by his dad Dwaine (Tammy) Jurreit and his mom Sandra Hoekstra (Dean, Brody) his siblings Tysen and Miranda Jurreit and sister Kaitlin Hoekstra and step dad Steve Hoekstra and step grandparents Nick and Rene Hoekstra and all the Hoekstra family. Grandparent Charlotte Jurreit, aunt Kim Jurreit, uncle Calvin (Barbra) Lana, Kaylea, Steven, DallasDallas and all and his relatives (Barbara)Jurreit, Jurreit, Lana, Kaylea, Steven, all his in MerrittinB.C. relatives Merritt B.C. Grandparents Don and Janet Marling, Uncle Wade (Holly) Marling, Alli, Colby and Rex, also his cousin Milan Venuti. What we will miss is counting on Roddy looking serious and then breaking into his famous smile. Roddy will be greatly missed by all; we loved Roddy deeply. A celebration honoring Roddy’s love of life will be held on Saturday, September 1st, 2012 at Comox Valley Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay, at 1:30pm.

Michael Nicholas (Nick) Golinski November 19, 1940 –August 20, 2012 Nick died peacefully at home after suffering from a pancoast cancer tumor for the past four months. He was born in Campbell River and always claimed that he wouldn’t live anywhere else as this was the most beautiful place in the world to be. He leaves behind his wife, Joy, daughter Karen (Josh Hamlett), son Michael (Courtney), and daughter Carmen (Dave Pringle). He was blessed with three grandchildren: Donavon and Max Hamlett and Grace Golinski. He will also be missed by his two sisters, Gail Kretz (Donald Engel) and Fia Goulet, as well as many other family members and friends. Nick worked at Elk Falls mill for 34 years until he retired in May of 1997. He was skilled at using his hands and spent his time building, working on his vintage car, taking care of the family home, and cooking superb meals. He enjoyed many quiet hours working on his extensive stamp collection. He loved books, especially about local history, and retained what he read. Although he and Joy travelled extensively, he was always glad to come home. Nick placed great emphasis on living his life as an honourable man. As his family and friends know, he definitely achieved this goal. An open house gathering for family and friends will be held at 3925 Appian Way on Sunday, September 2, 2012 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Swimming 101 with a flat hand. A hand directed outwards when entering the water leads to unhealthy internal rotation. ■ Maintain good posture. Hunched or rounded shoulders can lead to a wide arm recovery that causes shoulder injuries. ■ Incorporate bilateral breathing into your swim workout. Breathing only on one side will develop the muscles on that side more than the other. Stay safe when swimming outdoors, never dive head first into water unless the depth is known. And, when swimming in lakes or oceans be aware of any natural hazards such as tides and rapids, never swim alone and keep a close eye on children in or around the water.

Perfect weather and a successful calculation of the tides created the most successful Discovery Passage Passage in the past six years. The big canoe from the Campbell River Band skippered by James Quatel joined with the Brave Hearts Dragon Boat team and a trio of boats from Strathcona Park Lodge along with many others to make a flotilla of 117 paddlers.

Sprint points race comes down to final battle After a night of full throttle speed Saturday night involving the lightning quick non wing Sprint cars and the powerful IMCA Modifieds, this coming long weekend will see Saratoga Speedway transform into Vancouver Island’s biggest crash fest as the annual two day Canadian American Demolition derby invades the Black Creek oval. Saturday night’s racing, sponsored by Napa Auto parts, was raced under clear skies with a nip of fall in the air. It was the last visit of the season for the Island Dwarf cars, Speedway motorcycles and the Wilroc Lite Sprint cars, with the Saratoga Speedway season point championship up for grabs. Only four points separated the top two Sprint cars heading into the 30 lap main event. Victoria’s Matt Verhagen and fellow Victoria driver Jeff Bird went into the main event as the only two drivers that could walk away with the championship. Verhagen went into the race leading the point race, forcing Bird to place well in the nine-car race to have any chance at claiming the championship. The championship was decided

on the eleventh lap as Bird had chased down leader Duane Zeinstra and was attempting to pass the Black Creek driver on the inside coming through the dog-leg portion of the oval when his front right tire made contact with Zeinstra’s car which damaged Bird’s front end sending him into the pits leaving
the championship in Verhagen’s hands. Not content on winning the championship in that manner Verhagen also chased down the leader but couldn’t muster up enough of a challenge to overtake Zeinstra and settled for second and the 2012 point championship while Zeinstra would coast to the main event win.
CRYSA Development Program 3X4 3X4 FALL 2012
The Dwarf cars event saw Jim Pridge as the night’s big winner as he took wins in both heat races and the 15 lap main event while Campbell River’s Stewart Lee got behind the wheel of a Dwarf car for the first time and came away a winner in his first race after placing first in the four-lap trophy dash. The motorcycles also finished off their season with Joel Forth a double winner in the
trophy dash and heat race while the main event win would go to Anthony Grey. Both the IMCA Modifieds and Bomber cars ran their second to last race night of the 2012 season as they close out their season on September 8. In Modified racing, Tim Openshaw posted fast time with a quick 15.55 lap however, Cumberland’s Kevin Noble, the defending points champion, took the
win in the heat race and main event with Parksville’s Pat Brown taking the trophy dash win. The Bomber cars saw point leader Stewart Lee assure himself his second point championship in three years after he posted the fast time then ran away with the win in the 20-lap main event. The Larsen brothers matched each other for wins as Darren took the trophy dash win with Darrell

capturing the second heat win while Ryan Monks picked up his first win of the season with a impressive win in the first heat. Extra laps...With cars expected from all over the Island and the Lower Mainland, this weekend will be the biggest two-day race event of the season as along with the Can-Am’s a big field of Crash to Pass cars is expected along with a full field of Hornet cars, Figure 8 cars and Roadrunners. The CanAm cars are expected to have nine cars per team while the crashers will likely have the numbers bolstered by cars from Victoria and the Lower Mainland. The Can-Am’s will r un three novelty races Saturday night, a cat and mouse race, a backwards and cone race and a most laps win race which will see a couple cars from each team complete as many laps as possible while the remaining cars will stop at nothing to block each other in a outrageous hard hitting demolition race where anything goes. On Sunday night the two teams will face off in a last team moving demolition derby to determine the 2012 Can-Am champion. The two day event is a rain or shine show with gates open both nights at 5:30 p.m. and racing set for 7 p.m.

Grain followed that performance with a silver medal win in the 10-km road walk, which she completed in one hour, 18 minutes and 53 seconds.
