Accused killer of Laura Szendrei cannot be named

Court proceedings begin in Delta teen’s murder case by Jeff Nagel THE CROWN’S CASE against the

young man accused in the beating murder of North Delta teen Laura Szendrei is being laid out in a Surrey court room this week. The preliminary inquiry opened in Surrey Provincial Court Monday morning but the actual trial will come later, if a judge determines there’s sufficient evidence to proceed. The 18-year-old male who was arrested in February, 2011 cannot be named because he was 17 at the time of Szendrei’s death. Szendrei, a 15-year-old student at Burnsview Secondary, Laura Szendrei was found badly beaten in Delta’s Mackie Park on Sept. 25, 2010 and later died in hospital. The killing continues to send shockwaves through the community, according to Delta Mayor Lois Jackson. “Even though it’s been two years, it’s very alive in people’s memory,” she said. “Nothing of course will bring her back but we still have a major See SZENDREI / Page 5

Ron Graham, general manager of K-Bro Linen Systems in Burnaby, oversees the washing of some 3.5 million pounds of linen items each year from 18 area hospitals and long-term care centres. Each day, 10,000 pounds of linens to be washed are trucked in from Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) alone. In the last of a five-part special series on the ‘hidden’ side of health care at SMH, learn how the hospital gets is whites so white, and blues so blue, on Page 3.

As a load finishes its 32-minute wash through the tunnel, it’s squeezed-pressed into a hockey puck more than a metre wide before being sent via conveyer belt to one of seven dryers linked to each of the two washers. After drying, washes are sent to another section of the warehouse, where dozens of workers sort, inspect, iron, fold and wrap the linens for shipping. A few stubborn items are treated and re-washed. A separate, isolated room is used to carefully inspect cloths used in surgery for holes or tears. Even though it’s possible for one item to be processed from hospital to laundry and back in 48-72 hours, the entire laundry process will take seven days in a complex chain of pick-up, sorting, washing, more sorting, storage, shipping and distribution. One random washcloth sent from Surrey Memorial might end up in Vancouver General Hospital the following week, admits Graham. That’s because the company pools most linens – K-Bro actually owns virtually all the items they wash – and redistributes them as needed. It’s all part of a service contract with four regional health agencies that has several staff members at each hospital every day watching inventory and redistributing linens to the departments. At SMH, there are four K-Bro members (out of a staff of about 220) on at any one time, and on average, one tractor-trailer unit of laundry comes out each day; VGH fills three trucks per day. Graham admits that hospital laundry is something most people don’t think about. “They system would break down without us.”

SURREY’S STREET TREES

Trees are thirsty too! Summer is here; the weather is warm; and the trees on your street and in your yard need water. Like us, trees need long refreshing drinks of water to stay healthy. Here’s what you can do to help your neighbourhood street trees and the trees in your yard this summer: 1. Water the trees twice a week. 2. Water thoroughly at the base of the trees for 15 minutes. 3. Water during the cooler parts of the day (early morning and dusk) and when it isn’t raining. 4. Water slowly so that the water has time to soak into the dry soil and reach the roots, instead of pooling on the surface. For more information about street trees, please call 604.501.5050 For more information about private trees, please call 604.591.4675

A price to pay for U.S. shopping

RAESIDE

C

anadian consumers are heading south for an overnight stay and shopping to take advantage of new cross-border allowances and the high dollar. Cross-border trips in June, the first month the higher exemptions took effect, were up to levels not seen since 1972. Way back then, the dollar was also above par, and gas prices were also low. Taking a trip to the U.S. was a breeze. It seems many are willing to spend the time in border line-ups and pay for the extra gas to save about 14 per cent on many items. They also want to have access to a wider variety in clothing and other consumables. The downside is that local retailers are taking a hit, and when they do, they cut back on new hires and those much-hated taxes (which pay for health, education and other important programs) take a hit, as well. Retailers in border communities like Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford are particularly hard-hit. Canadians are understandably looking for bargains. But there may come a time when the lure of cheaper U.S. products will come back and haunt them. A long-term decline in retail jobs and declining tax revenue can do some major damage to the B.C. economy. Tax shortfalls must be made up somewhere, so that means everyone (including cross-border shoppers) will pay more. With fewer jobs, it will be that much harder to pay those added taxes. More likely though, as the U.S. economy rebounds as housing sales are cautiously expected to do, the loonie will eventually drop in value. This will greatly diminish the advantage of shopping down south. – Tri-City News

DP leader Adrian Dix has announced that one of his first acts as premier would be to withdraw B.C. from the joint review of the Enbridge pipeline proposal from Alberta to Kitimat. The two-year federal-led review will be mostly done by next May, but Dix proposes to start a new provincial assessment to examine at the B.C. portion. He doesn’t know how much it would cost, and under questioning he all but admitted the intention is to study the pipeline to death. Fresh from a summer tour of the pipeline route to reaffirm solidarity with its opponents, Dix is hardly in a position to consider anything but maximum resistance. As Premier Christy Clark did in her showdown with Alberta over benefits, Dix hinted that provincial permits for river and wildlife crossings would be made as expensive as possible, if not refused. The same fate awaits the Kinder Morgan plan to twin the existing Trans-Mountain oil pipeline to Burnaby. Dix left the impression that he would undo the years of work that

Canada, Transport Canada, the provincial ministries of natural resources and energy and mines, and of course aboriginal communities. This is why it’s so long and expensive. And don’t be fooled into believing that a federal review would go out and count the tadpoles and caribou again. It’s only the desk jobs that have proliferated. There weren’t just two levels of duplicate review, but three. Earlier in their mandate, the B.C. Liberals exempted major projects such as mines and energy generation from local government control, citing the “provincial interest” similar to the federal authority over projects that cross provincial borders. I agree with the NDP that B.C. environmental assessment needs more resources, in particular to do the follow-up on approved projects, as called for by the auditor general. Forest management needs more money too. All the more reason not to waste resources on political gestures. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

Good luck We need better planning and a little mercy finding serenity now WE ALL LOOK FORWARD to the completion of

RE: GOODBYE SURREY, so long,

Aug. 21 letters. J. Reichert’s letter trashing Surrey is unjust and offensive to the people who live here and call our city home. I moved here from Vancouver three years ago for the same reason he claims he’s leaving Surrey. In fact, the City of Vancouver was ranked as the second most densely populated city in North America, behind only Los Angeles. No matter where you move to in the Metro Vancouver area, you’re going to experience the same thing. It’s a part of urban living. Suites, parking issues and home businesses exist in all areas of the Lower Mainland. So good luck on the other side of the river. Surrey will be just fine without you.

the Highway 1 improvement project, including the new and improved Port Mann Bridge. What we need – to go along with this project – is some new and improved fairness. Contrary to the beliefs of some politicians, Surrey, Langley and beyond are actually part of the Lower Mainland. We are not a separate region. We breathe the same air and pay the same gas taxes. However, we are about to receive what may be the largest new tax levy in British Columbia history. The Port Mann tolls are on the way. This is not a new bridge to a new area, like the Golden Ears Bridge or like the Lion’s Gate Bridge

was many years ago. This is a bridge replacing a bridge that has been in use for nearly 50 years. We, living to the east of the bridge, have been elected to pay tolls. For many average families that commute to work and have many other involvements to the west of the bridge, these tolls will easily be over $2,000 per year. Where is the equitableness in all this? Think of all the other recent highway improvement projects in B.C., the wonderful Sea to Sky Highway for instance. Does anyone have a toll to pay to sample its delights? The bottom line is that $6 for a return trip is too much for those who live in close proximity to the bridge and use it daily.

We need a more equitable arrangement, perhaps an annual pass system. We need better planning and a little mercy from our government. It is not too late to reduce this onerous pending taxation. We need those representing us, to represent us. I am not hearing any support from the multiple BC Liberal and NDP MLAs whose ridings are east of the bridge. This is a major financial issue that needs be better planned and rethought to make this equitable.

City rules seem to be made to be broken NICE TO HEAR our city council

has passed yet another “optional” bylaw for people to ignore, e.g. lawn watering restrictions. It’s a fact, people water their lawn whenever they want (my neighbour right now is doing his at 1:30 in the afternoon). Go for a walk in the evening and count the sprinklers. Regarding dog licensing/ leashing/picking up after, I work where a lot of people come by with their pets. I bet 40 per cent aren’t licensed, 30 per cent are off-leash and many don’t have a collar on. Go for a walk in the evening, watch where you step, count the off-leash dogs. School yards are clearly posted as no pets, yet people use them as their own personal off-leash parks. Bike helmets – yet another optional bylaw. Everyone seems to have an excuse why the laws don’t apply to them.

Unreliable industry RE: TIME FOR INVESTMENTS in

forests, BC Views, Aug. 21. It’s time to obey our own provincial laws, let alone invest more into our forests. Our federal government has made it clear that it’s not going to accept as good enough one’s unrelenting efforts at finding paying forestry work when applying for EI. This, regardless of the fact that the BC Liberal government has – by its notoriously pathetic non-maintenance of B.C.’s forests – broken provincial laws stating that it must adequately maintain a healthy forestry sector. Sure, the B.C. government finds no problem when it comes to razing large swaths of trees for countless square kilometres, but everything else has gone to hell, including what once was reliable forestry work. I suppose I would be more prone to agreeing with the City of Surrey in restricting animals in parks with playing fields, if they would also restrict the players on those same fields from using the bushes and trees as their personal washrooms.

There will always be some risk – mitigate it THE NORTHERN Gateway Pipeline and shipping

can be done safely with minimum environmental risk. There will always be some risk, just as there is risk to everyone of being dead tomorrow. Canada needs this pipeline to contribute to our future pensions, medicare and social programs. The money has to come from resources; manufacturing will never be enough to pay for the future. Don’t count on software and science, as those sources are portable and move with manufacturing to the lowest cost source. Just look at movies, games and apps – give them a tax break, they are gone; zero loyalty. For the pipeline, government needs to put a Crown department in place to monitor all safety, condition, repair and other requirements on a daily basis. The oil industry has proven beyond a doubt it is not capable. The Crown agency would be responsible for

daily monitoring, testing and shutting down the pipe for any possible safety reason. Pay for it with a per-barrel fee, never cap the total fee and make all penalties without limit, not just to the pipeline operator but also its parent companies. Consultation with native groups to address their concerns needs to be thorough, but those groups are not able to just say no to all alternatives. The courts have been clear that consultation and due consideration take place but not blind denial of progress, nor can the companies just cite economic cost and bulldoze their way through. Enbridge needs to be smart and consider the issues and reduce risk. Shipping has been a major concern. Listening to some groups, you would think every sailing was the equivalent of the Exxon Valdez. Many, including NC NDP Leader Adrian Dix continue to refer to a non-existent moratorium on shipping oil on the coast; the only moratorium is on drill-

ing and development of underwater resources, not shipping. The current proposals don’t contain final details of ship construction. They do include: radar on the channel; tugs tethered to loaded ships; emergency tugs carrying response equipment accompanying outgoing ships; weather restrictions that prohibit sailing in high winds; and a new detailed chart of the channel being prepared to confirm all underwater conditions. When the reviews are completed revisions can be made to further enhance all safety requirements Can all the risks be eliminated? Probably not, but certainly the project can be safe and secure. We need to use the best engineering and construction skills to make it happen for all our benefit. Ross Blair Surrey

track, and then to kick at anyone who tried to get him going again. He would also “see ghosts” and get scared for no apparent reason. Mmmmmh had already gone through a few trainers before he came to Roberts, who finds it easier to call him “Mark.” Roberts began working at Fraser Downs 12 years ago as a groom, taking care of horses’ day-to-day needs. She now owns four harness racing horses and trains five, who can all be seen on the track this season: Mmmmmh, Fantasy Money, Camerlengo, B R Mystic Star and Red Star Chuckles, a friend’s horse. All her horses are “rescues” or “handme-downs,” she says. “They’re the horses that for various reasons others have given up on.” These horses would otherwise end up on the waitlist for Greener Pastures, a Standardbred horse adoption society in Langley, in the hope of eventually being taken into a new home. “Greener Pastures does a wonderful job of placing horses but they’re limited as to how many they can take at a time,” Roberts explains. She says she’s lucky her husband works outside the industry so she can afford to work with the horses for the love of it rather than as a moneymaking venture. And if a horse needs a few months rest, Roberts can keep them at her 10-acre property in Cloverdale. “A lot of them [owners] are in it as a business,” she says. “And it’s like any business – when a business doesn’t make money, you have to make changes. The horse might need to be turned out for two months just to rest, it might be slightly lame or it might have an illness, and they just can’t afford to put any more money into it... And I’m always right there to give it a shot.” This doesn’t mean all her rescues are financial losses. “Mark is a wonderful success story,” she says. Of the seven horses

Governance: Options examined Mayors quickly rejected that proposal. Walton said most mayors now appear to support a complete return to the previous TransLink model, where elected mayors and councillors were appointed by the Metro Vancouver board. But he said TransLink is pulling together research on possible alternatives.

From page 9 be looking at what new TransLink governance model they should support. The province offered a modest change to the existing board that would add two directors – the mayors’ council chair and vice-chair – but keep majority control with the remaining unelected directors.

Richard Walton “There may be some hybrid models that have been successful

that we can learn from.” It’s hoped the mayors can agree on a preferred option that they would then propose to whichever new government takes power after next May’s provincial election. Walton said he doesn’t see any chance of the province agreeing to more reform at TransLink before the election.

Come find your I’ll Have Another Two years ago, a yearling named I’ll Have Another sold for $11,000. This year, ridden by B.C.’s own Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the hearts of horse racing fans around the world. He won more than $2.7 million in prize money for his owner. And it all started at a sale just like the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Annual Yearling & Mixed Sale. I’ll Have Another is an enormous success story, but there have been many other less publicized stories. Hundreds of prize winning horses have come from the CTHS-BC sale throughout its 60-year history. Strait of Dover was purchased in the 2010 sale and the horse has since won $750,000, including this year’s Queen’s Plate, Canada’s most prestigious race. And prominent local horse owner Glen Todd purchased Taylor Said for $9,000 in the 2009 sale. It has earned $278,000, including a huge win in the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs in Seattle earlier this year. See the future of thoroughbred horse racing in B.C. Find your I’ll Have Another. Everyone is welcome to come down this Monday and Tuesday to see future prize-winning horses at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, B.C. Whether you simply want to see the powerful thoroughbreds and discover what it’s all about, or you’re looking to buy your first horse or fifteenth horse, everyone is encouraged to visit and spot the next big winner. The 85-acre Thunderbird Show Park is one of North America’s premier equestrian facilities and it’s located right in your backyard. Enjoy the afternoon with live music and a snack, and see where the journey begins for these magnificent animals. The CTHS Yearling Parade on September 10 and Annual Yearling & Mixed Sale on September 11 are two of the largest displays of horse racing talent in the country. Everyone who visits is eligible to win the grand prize draw of an all-expense-paid trip to California to watch the 2012 Breeders’ Cup, November 2-3, 2012, at Santa Anita Park in Los Angeles.

Rioter pens apology letter Surrey’s Emmanuel Alviar completes a month in jail

by Jeff Nagel

A STANLEY CUP rioter from Surrey is out of jail and has penned a court-ordered apology letter to the City of Vancouver. Emmanuel Alviar, 20, served his onemonth jail term this summer after being sentenced in June. “Dear Mayor Robertson, I am sorry for pushing the side of a car and throwing a piece of wood at a window during the Vancouver riot,” Alviar wrote in the brief letter. “I should never have done those things. My participation in the riot affected the community in a way by striking negative inspiration into all the hearts and minds of the community witnessing my crime spree.” Alviar turned himself in to police early in the investigation into the June 15, 2011 riot following the Vancouver Canucks playoff loss and pleaded guilty

FILE PHOTO

Emmanuel Alviar was captured on video pushing a car during the 2011 Stanley Cup riot. He spent a month in jail this summer. in March to participating in a riot. He had

been captured on video that was posted online.

Alviar said he succumbed to peer pressure because his life wasn’t heading in a purposeful direction, but has since found a better path. “I am proud to say I am accepted and planning on attending my local university this September to further build on my character and quality of life.” His conviction for participating in a riot also netted him 16 months probation and a requirement to perform 150 hours of community service work. It was the first jail term handed to a Stanley Cup rioter with no prior criminal record.

Gurjit Dhillon is charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death Black Press THE TRIAL of a man charged in the street racing death of a Surrey grandfather began last week. Gurjit Dhillon, 28, is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death. On Sept. 17, 2009, 83-year-old Pritam Benning was waiting for a bus at 128 Street and 72

Avenue. It’s alleged that Dhillon was racing his black Corvette against a yellow Corvette, when Dhillon lost control and hit another car. Police believe his vehicle then smashed into the bus stop where Benning was standing. Benning died in hospital five days later, but never regained consciousness long enough for his family to say goodbye. CBC News is reporting that police testified

Wednesday that Dhillon turned himself in immediately after the crash. The Benning family was there during the opening days of the trial. “There is a lot of anger,” the victim’s son, Manjit Benning told CBC. “It’s hard to lose a parent and it’s even harder to lose them like that.” The trial continues.

Aldergrove park plan advances

August Celebration! 2 for 1 es i h t o o Sm Y SIZE!

AT CENTRAL CITY

Metro staff considering various facility upgrades by Jeff Nagel

the regional parks department drained the popular swimming hole in 2011 to comply with more stringent public health regulations. Metro staff say they’re considering various trail and facility upgrades, providing more routes for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians. An open house is expected in late September and a draft management plan is to come

METRO VANCOUVER

will proceed with the development of plans to enhance Aldergrove Regional Park in southeast Langley. At least that’s what the region is calling the former Aldergrove Lake Regional Park for now, pending a final decision on a new name. The lake reference is being dropped since

back to the Metro board for approval this winter. Staff envision an expanded dog off-leash area, creation of a new wetland area for wildlife viewing and an active farm program. Youth activities at Aldergrove Bowl could include disc golf, tobogganing and adventure play. A water play area is also under consideration, but not the reopening of

a destination swimming area, as desired by many residents. It’s not yet clear where money will come from for any actual upgrades of the park that do make it into a final plan. A Metro report cautioned that proceeding with the management plan would “likely result in some public expectation of capital investment to implement the plan.”

Surrey, top investment city Businessreview.ca has joined a chorus of authorities saying Surrey is a good buy for real estate by Kevin Diakiw SURREY IS one of five

cities named as being home to the best real estate investments in Canada. The online publication businessreview.ca named Surrey – along with Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Red Deer, Alta., and Barrie, Ont. – as some of the best opportunities for real estate investment in the country. The report, which indicated it chose to look forward rather than back to determine investment possibilities, used factors such as

market stability, housing prices and future growth potential. “With its cultural diversity and interna-

and trails sprinkled throughout the city, Surrey offers residents an arrestingly beautiful landscape with all of the

tional flavor, Surrey is an emerging metropolis with a dynamic local economy,” the publication states. “With over 6,000 acres of parkland and green spaces, and an array of bike lanes

amenities of a bustling city.” It also notes the benefits of two border crossings with the U.S. and $15 billion a year in trade, making the area a good business location.

“As business opportunities in Surrey increase, and the population continues its steady climb, the city’s tremendous growth looks to continue for many years to come,” it states. In 2011, Western Investor Magazine named Surrey the best place in Western Canada to invest in real estate, and the Real Estate Investment Network has named Surrey the best place in B.C. to invest, and also ranked the city fourth on the list of top Canadian investment cities.

bronze medal game. He’s as versatile an offensive threat as you’ll find at the power forward spot, with a polished post game and the ability to knock down the three-pointer. Watching him play now, it’s incredible to note how far he’s come since he was a raw rookie. “He’s gotten there the old-fashioned way,” said Friesen, who worked closely with Grewal as an assistant coach for five years under Craddock. “The guy, he’s a worker. He really took the challenge of wanting to get better. “My first year here, for the first month or two, we never really dribbled or shot (at a hoop). We just did form shooting against the wall. He literally started right at the bare fundamentals of the game of basketball. He was humble enough to start there, and he built his game up. He didn’t skip any steps.” It’s been an interesting off-season for the Cascades. With all five starters set to return, it looked like they’d be the Canada West favourites this year. But then Craddock departed, and stars Joel Friesen and Jasper Moedt elected to follow him to the Golden Bears. “It sucks, right?” Grewal acknowledged. “But at the end of the day, it is what it is. We’ve got a bit of a chip on our shoulder now. “I think people around the country are like, ‘Oh, UFV might be done.’ But I honestly believe we’re stronger than last year. I’m a big fan of Adam. He’s going to put everything he has into it, and we’ve got some great recruits.” Indeed, new bench boss Friesen has acted quickly to fill the void left by the departed players. He’s added four newcomers, including three from the Toronto area – point guard Aaron McGowan, wing Kevon Parchment and post Hudson Simon. Andy Khaira, a centre from Surrey, is also on board, joining a trio of Craddock-recruited rookies from the B.C. high school ranks – Manny Dulay (Tamanawis), De’Sean Monsanto (Walnut Grove) and Luke Morris (Mission).

Playoff format expands Eight teams qualify Black Press THE B.C. Hockey Major

Midget League (MML) is creating two more playoff spots for the 2012-13 season. Eight of the 11 teams will make the playoffs next season, as opposed to six in past years. “The addition of two playoff spots will create a much more focused attention to the development of players and less on winning,” said Randy Henderson, BCMML chairman. “The league’s mandate is to develop all players to play at a higher level of hockey.” The Valley West Hawks would have benefitted from such a change in recent seasons. In a three-year span from 2007-08, the Hawks finished seventh in each season. Valley West, comprised of 15-17 year-old players from the Surrey, Semiahmoo, Cloverdale and Langley Minor Hockey Associations, finished sixth last season with a 20-17-3 (won-lost-tied) record. The new format will eliminate first round byes for the top two teams in regular season play, meaning all eight playoff teams will participate in the best-of-three quarterfinal round. The four first round winners will be reseeded for the semifinals, with the highest placing team hosting the lowest, and second-highest facing the third-highest. The semifinal and final rounds will also be a best-of-three, with the high seed in all postseason series hosting all three games.
