Scooter driver dead A 36-year-old Surrey man is dead after a late-night accident while driving his motor scooter. Surrey RCMP said the man was eastbound on Fraser Highway at

176 Street when he lost control of the gas-powered moped at 2:18 a.m. Aug. 25. The man was laying motionless on the road when he was run over by an eastbound

minivan driven by a 28-year-old from Langley. The victim died of his injuries. Police say there’s no indication alcohol or dangerous driving was

a factor on the part of the minivan driver, but officers are still trying to determine why the victim lost control of the scooter. – Jeff Nagel, Black Press

Corn maze opens today The Bose Family Corn Maze in Cloverdale has opened – just in time for the Labour Day long weekend. A wet, cold spring meant a late start for planting the corn at the family owned and operated maze, located one block south of 64 Avenue on 156 Street. Always a popular attraction for families, teens and even corporate retreats, it’s open from Aug. 30 to Oct. 21, a little later in the season than is ordinarily the case. Spring rain and defective flood boxes delayed planting by almost a month, Novy Bose told the Reporter last week (“Bose corn maze opens soon,” Aug. 23). This year’s design honours B.C.’s turkey farmers – a nod to the Bose family’s turkey farm operations. The long-running maze attraction includes a campfire to gather around for roasting marshmallows, a sand box, hay jump, pumpkin patch, and slides, plus a country store selling locally-grown

vegetables. Over the holiday long weekend, the maze will be open from noon to 8 p.m. (time of last admission) Aug. 30, 31 and Sept.1, and from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 2 and 3. From Sept. 4 on, the maze is open Thursdays and Fridays from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m., Sundays and holiday Mondays from noon to 4 p.m. The maze is reserved for booked groups of 15 or more Mondays to Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $5.50 for kids aged 5 to 18, and it’s free for kids four and under and seniors aged 65 and over. tiring soon, so the pair plan on making plenty of trips to visit their daughter in the Sunshine State. “We’re both really sad because it’s a tight-knit family and she’s daddy’s little girl,” said Kathy. “We wish her well... but, she’s on the other side of the continent.”

Luckily for them, they won’t have to wait long. Candice, now 25, and Mike, 26, were legally married in a courtset ceremony in January, and their actual wedding is planned for September 29. “He’s a good guy and she’s happy,” said Kathy. “I’m thrilled.”

Taking one for the team? What do the loss of Delta farmland, the paving over of ancient aboriginal sites on the Fraser River and Enbridge’s planned Northern Gateway oil pipeline to Kitimat all have in common? All three are sacrifices B.C. is being asked to make so the rest of Canada can use B.C. ports to exploit rising trade with Asia. Agricultural land is being carved off in blocks big and small to convert into port-related development or highway improvements. The South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR) last year rolled over some of the province’s oldest First Nations archaeological sites near the Alex Fraser Bridge. That may have gone relatively unnoticed but most Lower Mainland motorists know their commutes are increasingly slowed by trucks clogging the roads and longer trains holding up traffic – more symptoms of the pressure to make Metro Vancouver Canada’s west coast super port. Now, after a rising tide of public opposition to the Northern Gateway pipeline, Premier Christy Clark has vowed to block it without world-leading environmental

protection and a big share of benefits for B.C. She has her eye on the $81-billion tax bonanza governments stand to reap from the pipeline. Should Ottawa attempt to force it through, the province threatens to bog Enbridge down in permit approvals and even deny the project electricity from BC Hydro. Standing up to Alberta and Ottawa might make good politics in the dying year of a possibly doomed government. But such posturing likely rings hollow for local environmental groups like the Burns Bog Conservation Society that have spent years fighting the SFPR over the threat it poses to the bog and wildlife habitat along the Fraser. The perimeter road is all about quickly shunting trucks between Deltaport and Highway 1, which is also expanding to 10 lanes through much of Metro Vancouver. For years, the B.C. government has been an ardent partner of Ottawa in its Asia-Pacific Gateway

strategy, expediting the port and road expansion. Victoria never lifted a finger to stop the resulting industrialization of farmland, and in fact pulled land out of the Agricultural Land Reserve to enable the port expansion envisioned in the Tsawwassen Treaty. Where, Metro Vancouver mayors might also ask, was Clark’s boldness to shake down Ottawa when they wanted to slap a tax on each container that moves through the port? Since container trucks beat up our roads and bridges, they suggested, why not charge a container toll that would go to TransLink and act as one new funding source that doesn’t come from the pockets of the region’s embattled taxpayers and motorists. But the container tax was shot down almost instantly by the BC Liberals. In fairness, this region has been on the receiving end of plenty of cash from Ottawa. The feds have pumped in hundreds of millions of dollars – not

just for obvious port-related projects like the SFPR and Roberts Bank Rail Corridor overpasses, but also big contributions to the construction of the Pitt River Bridge, the Canada Line and now the Evergreen Line to extend SkyTrain to Coquitlam. Port expansion also promises thousands of additional jobs in the Lower Mainland, which can’t pin its economic future on retail service wages alone. That doesn’t take away from the fact there are downsides to being Canada’s West Coast industrial park. Whether it’s the new Enbridge pipeline, the expanded Kinder Morgan pipeline proposal or simply more expansion of port terminals, all of this boils down to the same thing: an expectation B.C. suck it up and accept inconvenience, risk and environmental or other losses to benefit the rest of Canada. If we are being asked, over and over, to take one for Team Canada, maybe it is time to consider seeking a new deal.

Teen reading buddies required Enthusiastic about books and reading? Why not give the Cloverdale library a buzz? Teen volunteers are needed this fall for a program at the Cloverdale Library that helps young readers. The Coast Capital Reading Buddies program helps younger elementary school children improve their reading skills by pairing them up with a high school student. The little buddies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; children in Grades 2 to 4 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; practice reading in a safe, non-threatening environment, building their confidence through weekly sessions at the library. To qualify as a reading buddy volunteer, you must be fluent in English, enjoy working with children, have an interest and enthusiasm for books and reading, be 14 to 18 years old, and able

Fraser Downs driver debuts Surrey’s own Michael Munoz is the newest driver to qualify for racing at Fraser Downs. On Sunday, Aug. 26, the 26-year-old had his first official drive at the landmark Cloverdale raceway. He drove his own horse, Dirt Roads Scholar, in the eighth race at last Saturday’s harness races. He drew an outside post, so the odds weren’t in his favour for his debut. “Well, it was good to get my feet wet,” he was heard saying. “Finished seventh from the seven hole, but didn’t expect much different. I’ll tighten things up and am looking forward to better luck next week.” The same race went more successfully for a horse named Mmmmh, the standardbred featured in last week’s edition (“A-Mmmmhazing turnaround,” Aug. 23). He placed second. Opening weekend (Aug. 18-19), veteran driver Jim Marino won six races, including the first leg of the B.C. Breeders Stakes for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings, landing him in the winner’s circle with I Hear Voices. Marino was already leading with 61 wins and $417,698 in earnings when the first half of the 2012 racing season at Fraser Downs ended in mid-May. There’s live racing this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, with cards starting at 12:45 p.m.

Two years ago, a yearling named I’ll Have Another sold for $11,000. This year, ridden by B.C.’s own Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the hearts of horse racing fans around the world. He won more than $2.7 million in prize money for his owner. And it all started at a sale just like the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Annual Yearling & Mixed Sale. I’ll Have Another is an enormous success story, but there have been many other less publicized stories. Hundreds of prize winning horses have come from the CTHS-BC sale throughout its 60-year history. Recent retiree, Spaghetti Mouse, was purchased in the 2003 sale and the horse has since won

close to $1 million, all earned at Hastings Racecourse. And prominent local horse owner Glen Todd purchased Taylor Said for $9,000 in the 2009 sale. It has earned $278,000, including a huge win in the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs in Seattle earlier this year. See the future of thoroughbred horse racing in B.C. Find your I’ll Have Another. The Queen’s cabin is simple and feminine, while Prince Phillip’s adjoining cabin reflects his no-nonsense naval background. The only queen-sized bed onboard was ordered by Prince Charles for his honeymoon with Princess Diana. The formal dining room, where many the great and the good were hosted, is the main concession to grandeur. The ship is definitely worth visiting. Remember to make time for tea and scones on the upper deck. Earlier in the week, we had left central London and explored Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon Avon home flanked by gardens dotted with poppies, and spent a brilliantly sunny afternoon exploring The Shambles, a rabbit warren of shops in the shadow of York Cathedral. Here, the importance of noting the coach number, departure time, and location, was demonstrated when a fellow traveler vanished. Our worried tour director, John Brackenridge, delayed as long as possible before enlisting the aid of the local constabulary. During dinner at the Majestic (a rambling Victorian hotel with a delightfully informative local receptionist), our missing mate was, to John’s relief, returned none the worse for wear. I’d like to have explored more of North Yorkshire, but Durham with its UNESCO World Heritage cathedral and castle was next on our list. Well worth exploring, Durham is hilly, and rambling. Since 1832 the castle has housed Durham University. Gretna Green (less touristy when my parent’s

honeymooned there in 1940), was included in our swing through Scotland. After all-too-brief samples of Wales via Conwy and Carnarvon, we wheeled back south through the Lake District to Liverpool. Here I recommend investing £13 to join local tour guide and big time Beatles fan, Sylvia O’Malley, for a visit to the Cavern Club. Dashing through a downpour down an alley, the club lived up to its name. On stage a local entertainer told us all we needed was love. Beatles photos decorated the walls, and you can jive to your heart’s content. Fiftieth anniversary celebrations go on until the end of 2012. To my surprise, I’d liked to have spent longer exploring Liverpool, but settled for watching the ferry cross the Mersey from my hotel window. Stonehenge, plus a brief visit to the spa town of Bath, rounded out our tour. For me, this was a hasty introduction to coach travel. My experienced coach companions advised me to try a 10-day tour, but they were pleased with the highlights we had covered. Without exception, they were bound for either Europe or Ireland by coach when we returned to London.
