Region THE ROYAL Trail relatively well-served, THEATRE PRESENTS legally speaking Trail News Briefs

A projected shortage of rural lawyers is expected to plague the province, but the Greater Trail region may buck the trend. According to the B.C. branch of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), roughly 10,400 lawyers are practicing in British Columbia. Of those, approximately 80 per cent practice in urban counties like Victoria, Vancouver and New Westminster. That disparity isn’t apparent in the Silver City with a younger contingent of lawyers. “There are currently 13 lawyers with Trail addresses and the average age is in the mid 40s, said Michael Jakeman, regional legal careers officer from the Rural Education and Access to Lawyers (REAL) program. “This is somewhat of a surprise for me and an anomaly for rural areas in the province. The average age

of lawyers in B.C. is approximately 50-years-old, with a slightly higher average age, 52, in small and rural communities. But some are exceeding the age of 60. Statistics from the Law Society of B.C. indicate that the average age of lawyers in the Kootenays is 53, Kamloops and the Okanagan see an average age of 50 years-old, while the numbers in the Cariboo and Prince Rupert are primarily over 50. The average ages of lawyers in Vancouver and New Westminster are among the lowest provincewide, coming in at 47 and 48, respectively. Sad ending to search for Fruitvale resident A Fruitvale man who was reported missing early on Wednesday morning was found dead two days later by search and rescue members. Craig Reichmuth, 64, left his home ear-

ly on Aug. 14 and did not return. It didn’t take long for word of his disappearance to spread as friends and family began searching for Craig on Wednesday, Aug. 15. But the group had no success and finally contacted the Trail RCMP at 1 p.m. to file a missing person’s report. Reichmuth’s family told police that he touched base frequently and they were concerned by his absence, considering he may have had an existing medical condition. After the report was made a group of 24 responders from the South Columbia Search and Rescue (SCSR) team combed every road from Creston to Christina Lake over a two-day period, with some re-tracing the steps the family had taken initially. Ron Medland, SCSR president said 15 civilians registered to aid the search for Reichmuth, but saw about 40 people helping instead.

We go on bike rides and walks together and he loves the exercise and so do I. He wakes me up in the morning by jumping on my bed and tapping my shoulder. One evening, when I was feeling especially sad, he came over to me and put his little face on my lap and just stared at me as if to say, “Don’t be sad, I am here for you.” So, this is Keefer, a one of a kind dog and friend. A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our BEST OF THE WEST Kootenay/Boundary PET CONTEST. The judging of these photos was probably one of the hardest tasks we’ve had to do. The response was overwhelming, and who knew there would be so many adorable pets in the region. Because the majority of the entries were of dogs, we chose 5 winners in that category (and that was tough), 3 for cats, and 2 for “other”, but every pet is a winner. Someone once said “A house full of animals is a house full of love”, so there must be a lot of happy homes out there. All of the pets on the first page of this special feature will be receiving prizes and the “parents” will receive an email over the next couple of days with instructions on where to pick them up. Some of the stories that accompanied the photos touched our hearts, so we’ve shared a few with you here on the last page. Thanks again for sharing your special cuties with all of our readers. - The staff of the West Kootenay Advertiser

Community reminders Would you like to sing in a non-auditioned, mixed community choir? The Trail and District Harmony Choir, celebrating 25+ years of music, is starting the 2012-13 season, bringing together residents of Castlegar, Warfield, Rossland, Trail, Montrose, Fruitvale, and Salmo

to sing and perform a wide range of music. Directed by Audrey Bisset and accompanied by Maureen Lewis, the choir starts Wed. September 5, 2012 and will meet each Wednesday until April, 2013 from 7:30 to 9:30 at Trail`s J. Lloyd Crowe Secondary School in the music room. The choir performs several times throughout the year and strives to create

an atmosphere of fun and friendship as well as focus on choral singing. Join us this September. For more information go to: www. harmony.kics.bc.ca. If you have questions contact Liz at 5128021. Latest in an ongoing look at eBay auctions concerning local history. How much would you pay for a 1952 postmark from Beaver Falls? How about $103.50 Cdn? That’s what one sold for last week. The high price was a result of its scarcity; the post office opened there in 1949, but was renamed Montrose four years later (although the two are adjacent but separate places).

This obscure postmark generated $103.50. Submitted photos

The Deer Park was around from 1897 to 1967, until the impending completion of the Arrow high dam flooded the community out It was one of six cancellations from defunct West Kootenay post offices offered by a Victoria seller, and by far the most highly sought after. The next-highest price paid was $21 for a 1960 cancel from Brouse, just south of Nakusp. The post office there operated from 1910-17 and 1932-64. Postmarks from Blewett (1953) and Appledale (1950) each went for $11.50. The Blewett office operated from 192358, with namesake postmaster William J. Blewett in charge for all but the last seven years. The Appledale post office was open from 1914-59. The last two postmarks sold for the bargain price of $2.50 each: Bonnington Falls (1953) and Deer Park (1963). The former operated from 1911-64. The last postmaster was the

late Dawn Penniket, a well-known Nelson old-timer who died three years ago. The Deer Park office was around for 70 years — from 1897 to 1967, until the impending completion of the High Arrow Dam flooded the community out. • Overlooked in this column’s recent round-up of noteworthy Phoenix items was a syringe attributed to a World War I nurse. Manufactured by Sharp and Smith of Chicago in the 1890s, it reportedly belonged to Miss Rose Wall, who taught in Phoenix, circa 1908, and later nursed in the No. 3 Canadian General Hospital in France. It sold for $20 US. • A trade token from Nelson’s KV Dairy sold for $60

US. It’s of comparatively recent vintage, dating to about 1960 according to Leslie Hill’s British Columbia Numismatica. The aluminum token, with a scalloped edge, reads “Good for 10c with empty bottle” on the back. Between 11 and 20 were known to exist when Hill wrote his book in 1980, but it’s the first to appear on eBay in the last decade. Palm Dairies eventually took over KV. • Two more semicommon Rossland tokens, described in this column a few weeks ago, fetched sizable sums: one from tobacconist S.B. Shaw went for $103.50 US, and another for Crow and Morris $48. See more of the mentioned items at nelsonstar.com.

On Saturday afternoon the Rosemont Bike Park came alive with a jumping competition that featured some impressive new heights for young riders. Bob Hall photo

On Monday the Three Flags Classic 2012 Tour will bring 220 motorcyclists and their passengers to Nelson. The local organizer of the event needs your help to welcome them. A total of 220 riders will take part in the 3,152 kilometre ride from El Paso, Texas to Nelson in what is considered one of the premier long distance motorcycle rides in North America. The tour was started in 1974 by the Southern California Motorcycle Association. The intent was to give those who enjoy long rides on twowheels an outlet. This year’s event will be the 37th such ride. With Hondas, Harleys and everything in between, this tour brings together a di-

verse group from all over the world. The riders and registered passengers will pull out of El Paso at 3 a.m. on Friday and must finish the race no later than 9 p.m. on Monday at Nelson’s Prestige Lakeside Resort. Along the way the riders will visit three checkpoints to have their passports stamped. If they complete the ride in the allotted time they receive a limited edition belt buckle and other paraphernalia. Jim Partridge is still looking for volunteers to help check the riders in and is hoping local motorcycle lovers will come down to chat with the participants next Monday and Tuesday. If you want to help out or want more information, contact Partridge at 250-3679548 or loe-jimpartridge@shaw.ca.

Region Invitation to those who can conserve, restore SUBMITTED

Waneta Expansion Project accepting applications for environmental conservation and restoration Projects. CASTLEGAR, B.C. – Partners in the Waneta Expansion Project - Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust, through the Waneta Terrestrial Compensation Program (WTCP), have provided funding to five local projects and are now accepting applications for 2013. This program provides up to $50,000 annually to projects in the Waneta area that promote conservation and restoration through research, physical works, and other on-the-ground or applied projects. “The Waneta Expansion Project is focused on a high standard of environmental protection,” said Audrey Repin, spokesperson for the project. ”The Waneta Terrestrial Compensation Program provides an opportunity for organizations to undertake projects which benefit our natural environment.” As one of the five recipients of funding from the WTCP in

2012, Seepanee Ecological Consulting is providing cuttingedge nighthawk monitoring research in the Fort Shepherd area, across the Columbia River from the Waneta Expansion Project. These agile insectivores, are active mostly at dusk and dawn, and are highly cryptic, making monitoring very difficult. With the help of

funding through this program, Seepanee is hoping to build on existing data regarding these birds regionally and publish their findings scientifically in the future. “These birds have been assessed federally as a species of special concern,” said Doris Hausleitner of Seepanee Ecological Consulting. “Yet, to our knowledge, there

is no data out there describing the habitat needs for these birds during nesting. We hope to change that with this research.” Eligible projects include research, habitat creation (restoration, rehabilitation), habitat protection, species inventories, educational program, development of management plans, weed control, and land ac-

quisition. Applications are now being accepted for next year’s Waneta Terrestrial Compensation Program. The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2013. Visit www. columbiapower.org/ wanetaexpansion for more information. Interested in learning more about the construction of the Waneta Expansion Project? Planning is underway for a public community day celebration at the construction site in 2013. The Waneta Expansion Project is a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation, and Columbia Basin Trust. For more information please visit: www.columbiapower. org/wanet aexpansion.

Week

August A u 31, 2012

Tip of the Week: How and why Astrology works is a mystery. This is especially so in light of what is understood as the Standard Model in physics. This is the model that looks to origins and which supports the Big Bang Theory. This model recently achieved a hallmark goal when the Higgs boson, dubbed the “God Particleâ€?, was ďŹ nally ofďŹ cially discovered on July 4th. After 5 decades of dedicated research and billions of invested dollars from a united European collaboration, which funded the building of particle colliders, of which CERN is the largest and best known, the existence of a very minute subatomic particle was proven to exist. This discovery proves that there is a continuous web that pervades the entire universe and ‘holds it together’. This offers proof of what humanity has long known: that there is a unifying principle in nature called the Etheric Web. That modern science has ‘proven its existence’ is noteworthy and may have profound implications for physics and metaphysics. The Standard Model cannot, however, encompass the deeper implications of why the universe works with such perfect, purposeful and intelligent symmetry. Yet there is another model that does appreciate this and it is called Holism. Briey, Holism points to inner dimensions ‘beyond’ all matter and recognizes these to be the source of outer reality. A core feature of these inner dimensions is archetypes or the ‘blueprint’ or ‘intelligent design’ of the outer, manifest realm. It is within the context holism that Astrology works.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

Your mood is becoming noticeably more sober now. At best you are ready to get down to work again or at least feel good about it. This will be especially true this week but summer is not over yet and you will likely want to get in some more play time. Get things in order this week and make way for some ďŹ nal perks before the season ofďŹ cially ends.

Taking some time out or at least working the angles from behind the scenes continues. Obtaining new tools or supplies is likely. With your ambitions steadily on the rise, this is a good time to do the background work. Travel remains a distinct possibility and this trend will continue for quite a while. Weave adventure into your plans.

A creative curve continues. You may feel a little stretched or at least the need to reach beyond your usual comfort zone. For the sake of realizing some of your more practical goals it is necessary. Working the angles on more than one front is likely and ideal. Yours is the sign of ‘multiple streams of income’. Proceed with that in mind!

Seeking clear answers to some important lingering questions remains a central theme. The good news is that as your direct your mind to ask these questions and then trust that you will get answers, you will. The main focus is linked to feeling secure. Part of the answer is overcoming a reactive tendency to worry. Take creative action to be here now.

The pace is suddenly quickening. You have more errands, projects, places to go and people to see. Feeling conďŹ dent within the ow these days stands to be more difďŹ cult than it used to be, but this is just a cycle and it too will pass; yet not for a good while so work with it to create inner strength. There is no going back so move forward towards the future.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

Making improvements and reďŹ nements to existing structures and rhythms of activity is the focus now. Casting a constructively critical eye verses getting lost in worthless criticism is ideal. The pace may feel slow and/or your comfort zone remains large and this may continue this week. To be productive, make a list with intentions to take more deliberate action next week.

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

An assertive cycle has begun. Hopefully you were able to recharge your energy levels in August. Now it is time to get going again. Opportunities to experience positive growth in your career and/or public life are available. To succeed however, you are wise to take some calculated risks. Pay close attention to the details especially in all communications.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

Our values and priorities, goals and objectives can shift and swing and this may be the case now. Above all what you yearn for is to feel secure. Part of the answer lies in balancing work and play and overcoming tendencies to get lost in the future. With your ambitions running high, however, feeling productive is important.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

A good deal of activity is stirring in your relationships and connections with others. Your willingness to give, perhaps more than usual, to people and situations is important now. Yet, make efforts to clarify your intentions and actions. The more you can feel like you are ‘on the same page’ with others the better and this will instil mutual conďŹ dence.

Sometimes our advantage lies is what we know and sometimes it is who. This is more of a ‘who’ cycle than a ‘what’. Knowing yourself better is likely as well. The accent now is upon acknowledging and reďŹ ning a sense of individuality and independence balanced with collectivity and collaboration. Share the spotlight!

Jacob Tolmie

‘Don’t Look… Listen’ (steel, reclaimed doors) Initially, Nelson sculptor Jacob Tolmie was going to exhibit one of his “cave sculptures”, a metal rendition of an antelope styled after ancient cave paintings from his Talisman/Shaman series. Equipment issues didn’t permit that piece to be entered, so he’s switched gears completely. ‘Don’t Look…Listen’ is diametrically opposite in style from ‘Antelope’ but still showcases his creativity and artistic flexibility in a dramatic manner. Post-Modern in style, the sculpture is an arresting foursided tower that stands 20 feet tall. It is made of a steel support structure and 12 reclaimed, refurbished doors. In alternating red, blue, green and yellow, they provide vibrancy with their brightness, uniformity and clean lines. The height and fluid lines of the pillar are unbroken except at the top where one of the red doors is slightly ajar. The effect is somewhat disconcerting as Tolmie intends, but there is ambiguity too: “I like straight lines. When they tell the eye Where I want it to go.” “I dislike straight lines. Unless, they are used to exemplify Unstraight lines”. Tolmie considers himself an emerging artist but the extent of his studies and body of work suggests modesty or

simple understatement. There is ample talent and versatility on display. Prior to moving to Nelson to take metal working classes at the Kootenay School of the Arts, he studied at Victoria College of Art. Additional education included Fine Arts studies at Concordia University in Montreal and Engineering at Queen’s University in Kingston. He has effectively utilized the disparity of his chosen fields of study to fashion this compelling work. With a touch of the iconoclast, Tolmie has deliberately eschewed an Artist’s Statement to accompany his sculpture. From his viewpoint, “It isn’t necessary. Like a manifesto, it can be a powerful tool to focus a will, or a decadent noose which restricts an idea, containing it, cutting off the creative flow.” He elaborates further on the desired impact of ‘Don’t

Look…Listen’. “I want it to speak to the people viewing it, to evoke thoughts, to stir up emotions, and memories. Ideally, the viewer will look inside, deep inside themselves.” Focused on and committed to his art, Tolmie’s passion is apparent. His entry is reflective of its creator - bold and unequivocal, intent on speaking to all.

CASTLEGAR SCULPTUREWALK 2013 CALL TO ARTISTS Castlegar Sculpturewalk is now accepting applicants from sculptors to take part in our 2013 event. Now in its third successful year, Sculpturewalk is a year-long outdoor exhibit of original sculpture by local and international artists. The sculptures are owned by the artists and loaned to the exhibit, where they are available for purchase, lease, and are open for public voting. The winner of the coveted People’s Choice Award will be purchased by The City of Castlegar for permanent display, in addition to a cash prize of $3000. Sculptures will also be judged and awarded on Artistic Merit, with prizes in that category totaling $5000.

The application deadline is October 31, 2012. Entry guidelines and the entry form are available online at http://www.sculpturewalkcastlegar.com/2013-application/
