Berry cannons drawing fire

Would-be robbers caught in the act Natasha JoNes Times Reporter

Neighbours complain blueberry cannons are keeping them up at night Natasha JoNes Times Reporter

Blueberry cannons shooting thundering, booming rounds that sound like shotgun blasts have created an agricultural war zone in the heart of Langley’s horse country. When horses are frightened they take flight and property owners are warning that it’s only a matter of time before a rider, thrown off a horse spooked by a cannon, is killed or seriously injured. There has already been a near miss. A south Langley farmer, who asked not to be named, told The Times that he was almost killed when a horse, spooked by a cannon, bolted. “I was at the horse’s side grooming and it just took off. If I had been in front of it, I would have been killed.” Police have also become involved. “A farmer who is two kilometres away from me left his cannon on automatic at night, and this cannon must have been hindering hundreds of people in the Otter area,” the south Langley man said. “At midnight my whole family was awake because of the banging every five minutes, so I got dressed and drove around until I found the property with the cannon on it. I called the RCMP who were very happy to hear from me as they had had many complaints but did not have time to waste wandering around Langley at midnight trying to locate noise sources. “I waited for the officer to arrive and he was very thankful I had taken the time to find and report this incident. continued, PAGE 10

Two Abbotsford men are in trouble with the law, after they were caught red-handed loading items from an outbuilding they were robbing. Their apprehension, said Langley RCMP spokesman Cpl. Holly Marks, is due to police work and sharp-eyed residents who reported the crime. It occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, when the two residents witnessed a break and enter in progress, watching as two men broke into a shop (a detached shed) on rural property in the 2300 block of 272 Street. The men were seen carrying items from the shop to a vehicle, returning several times for more items from the building. The first officer dispatched to the scene noticed one of the suspects running away. The officer gave chase, and caught the man. The second suspect also fled, but was found hiding in bushes nearby. As the officers took the two suspects into custody, they were advised of a recent report of a vehicle that had been stolen in Abbotsford. It turned out to be the same vehicle the culprits were using for the break and enter on 272 Street, Marks said. Police will recommend charges against the two men, aged 41 and 42, who are both from Abbotsford. Inspector Stephan Drolet of Langley RCMP said he was encouraged that the two residents helped in the apprehension of the suspects. That the stolen property was returned and nobody was hurt “demonstrates the benefits of us all working together to keep our community safe,” Drolet said. Police have not revealed what the outbuilding contained.

Langley’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University campus will welcome 600 full-time students and 70 faculty members into the program this fall Monique TaMMinga Times Reporter

The Kwantlen Polytechnic University Langley campus is going to be a whole lot busier come the start of the fall semester. More than 600 full-time nursing and health study students and 70 faculty have moved from the Surrey campus to Langley, bringing the entire community and health studies department together under one roof. Prior to the transformation, only three programs were being offered at the Langley campus. Now all 10 are, including a registered nursing degree and psychiatric nursing degree. “We are really excited to be here all together under one roof,” said Tru Freeman, dean of the CAHS. “I think we will add a lot of life to this campus.” Five years ago, Kwantlen’s trades department moved to the new Cloverdale campus leaving a large section of the Langley campus empty. Since then, a major renovation has taken place, transforming the garagelike building, adding a second floor and creating essentially a hospital setting Monique TAMMINGA/Langley Times for health care students to get hands-on experience, using life-like mannequins Tru Freeman, Kwantlen Polytchenic University dean of community and health studies takes the pulse of a mannequin in hospital beds, along with med carts, used in the nursing simulation classrooms. A man known as the “Big Bear” whose remains were found in Aldergrove last year, has been identified. He is Barry Steven MaslankaEwing. He would have been 58 this year. Langley RCMP spokesman Cpl. Holly Marks said that even though there is no evidence of foul play in Maslanka-Ewing’s death, police want to know where he was living between 2002 and 2005. They would like to hear from anyone who knew him during those years. The cause of death could not be determined, Marks said.

They will study to see how that is working out. There is also a lounging area for students to study and hang out in the foyer of the department.

Search for suspect in Lynden abduction attempt expanded into Lower Mainland Natasha JoNes Times Reporter

Police in Lynden, Washington, are asking for the public’s help to locate a man they say is responsible for attempting to abduct a 10-year-old girl in Lynden. “He’s a predator and he’s dangerous,” said Chief Jack Foster of the Lynden Police Department. “People will be watching for someone like this because he created his own opportunity.” Foster said that the

attempted abduction occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, near the intersection of 4th Street and Liberty. The girl escaped, but suffered a minor injury. The suspect who police are hunting is a white man in his late 20s or early 30s. He was wearing a black T-shirt and white, brown and black plaid shorts. The vehicle he was driving is described as a white, possibly mid-size extended cab pickup with a tool box in the bed.

Answers sought from PAGE 4

After approximately six weeks, he left and may have become homeless, she said. The area of the DoD property was once used as married quarters, and although most buildings were dismantled years ago, homeless people were known to set up shelters there in derelict buildings. Marks said that Maslanka-Ewing had never been on the RCMP’s radar, and police have no idea what he was doing the day he died, or how he came to be on the Aldergrove DoD land. Anyone with information that might help police with the final pieces of the mystery is asked to call Langley RCMP at 604 532-3200.

The girl told police that the tool box could possibly be chrome diamond plated; a witness claimed it is coloured ‘smokey brown.’ The pickup had a distinct gold coloured cross on the left side of the tailgate. A witness claimed the licence plate on the vehicle is a plain white background with raised blue lettering. She also said the plate had blue trim around the outside and some sort of symbol separating the letters and numbers.

Foster said that his department has received some tips from Lower Mainland residents, but the information was “nothing that we could possibly follow up on. Assault on its way

It’s just greenwash

T

axpayers of Langley Township and Langley City, prepare yourselves for another assault on your wallets. The first contract between a Lower Mainland city and the Canadian Union of Public Employees has been signed. As per usual union tactics, it has been negotiated in a city where union-friendly members have been elected to council, and where labour donations play a key role in municipal campaigns. The City of New Westminster and CUPE local 387 have concluded a fouryear agreement with a total of 6.75 per cent in wage increases over that period. While that sounds reasonable, keep in mind that CUPE locals across B.C. had much higher-than-average settlements in each year up to 2011, when the last contract expired. As a result, municipal workers’ wages are significantly higher than most private-sector workers doing similar work. In addition, they enjoy much better pension plans and a number of other benefits that are absent from most other private-sector contracts. Municipal taxes have been rising at significant rates since the worldwide recession hit in 2008, and the major factor has been the generous wage increases given to CUPE members. In most municipalities, managers automatically get similar wage increases as well. Labour costs are a significant factor in all municipal budgets. Both Langley City and Langley Township have yet to conclude contracts with their CUPE locals, but expect wage increases on a similar scale. The standard practice is for CUPE to go to other municipalities and, making use of the domino effect, get similar contracts. Thus taxes will go up by almost seven per cent in the coming three years (the contract began on Jan. 1). The tax boost will simply pay added labour costs. It will be very hard for either municipality to keep tax increases below four per cent annually, given many other priorities that each has. No one begrudges decent wages for working people. However, there is something wrong when most private-sector workers settle for wage freezes year after year, and their public-sector counterparts enjoy steady raises. Given the growing pension inequalities between the two sectors, this latest wage increase simply adds insult to injury. And it also means taxes will go up.

n occasion, government spin slips into a deceptive state and that is where B.C.’s much-lauded “carbon neutral” status resides today. In the annual report of the government-controlled Pacific Carbon Trust (PCT), we read this claim: “The most notable accomplishment of the last fiscal year...was the achievement of carbon neutrality for the provincial government.” In fact, our carbon neutral status is really a tax-shifting sleight of hand dispensing corporate welfare to lessthan-needy business barons. In 2007, the government called on its agencies to reduce carbon emissions to zero, but that would be an accounting exercise because you can’t operate hospitals and schools without leaving a carbon footprint. So, the government created the Crown corporation to turn the magic of taxation mathematics into a greener B.C. PCT’s job is to find public and private money to buy carbon credits and reinvest the cash on greenhouse gas reduction projects. Jordan Bateman, B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, says, “Only 12 private companies or individuals bought carbon credits last year for a measly $54,050. The rest of the Trust’s $14 million budget was funded exclusively by taxpayers.” On Vancouver Island those tax dollars included $870,000 from the Vancouver Island Health Authority and $58,000 from School District 72 here in Campbell River. That’s our precious tax dollars that should have been earmarked for much needed upgrades to hospital and school infrastructure. Who got the cash last year? Canfor, Interfor and Lafarge for “switching fuels;” Timberwest for “improved forest management;” and Encana for “state-of-the-art drilling.” Obviously, these corporate bottom line initiatives would have been undertaken regardless of PCT handouts.support. This is just corporate welfare under the guise of green washing B.C. and it isn’t right. —Campbell River Mirror The Langley Times is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. labour day reflections

Unions led to the middle class Editor: The origins of Labour Day in Canada go back 140 years to 1872 and a parade held in support of a Toronto union’s strike for a 58-hour work week. Back then, union activity was illegal in Canada and 24 workers were jailed for their role in the strike. An outcry of support and rally on Sept. 3, 1873 led Prime Minister John A. MacDonald to commit to repealing the law banning union activity, helping to lay the groundwork for real progress for working people. Since 1894, when Prime Minister John Thompson declared Labour Day an official holiday, working people have celebrated our gains and honoured those who fought for the rights and privileges we enjoy today. Unfortunately, the last 30 years has seen a troubling growth in inequality in our society. From the Second World War through 1980, working people shared equally in the gains of productivity with shareholders and owners through higher wages and improved purchasing power. But from 1980 forward, while productivity increased at an

even greater rate, workers’ wages stagnated and all gains of productivity have gone to owners and senior executives. Today’s middle class family feels like they are having a harder time making ends meet, because they are. Meanwhile, the rich have never been so rich. On this Labour Day, however, I look forward with optimism that we are turning a corner towards greater equality. Front-line workers in B.C.’s public service are negotiating for fair and reasonable wage increases. British Columbians want a fair and equitable society, and they recognize that the front-line workers in our schools, hospitals, and social and government services are an important part of that society. In the private sector, workers are once again negotiating agreements that see them share in the gains of their productivity and the value of their work. Recent agreements between workers and companies like Rio Tinto and Teck Resources have put more income in the pockets of workers, and boosted the fortunes of local communities. Tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy

are too often invested in overseas companies or simply held as cash, creating no local economic activity. But when working people earn more, they tend to spend it in their own communities. These agreements are setting a pattern for wage growth for all working people, whether in a union or not. This is good news for working and middle class families and it’s also good news for our economy. Liveable communities are anchored in a strong middle class and it was unions who were responsible for the development of the middle class. This Labour Day, as investment bankers and CEOs fight to hold on to a greater and greater share of the wealth working people generate, unions remain as relevant as they were 140 years ago, when our predecessors fought to reduce the work week to fewer than 60 hours. We continue to fight for better work and better lives for all Canadians, and I am hopeful that we are turning a corner towards better times for us all. Jim Sinclair, president, B.C. Federation of Labour

Private car insurance had many drawbacks Editor: Re: The editorial about privatizing ICBC (The Times, Aug. 21). I take issue with the statement “there is no real need to have government operate a car insurance company that forces all drivers to buy basic car insurance.” If the writer of that sentence had his car smashed into by a driver without insurance, he or she would yell his head off. One of several reasons ICBC was instituted was that, under private insurance, there were people driving around without insurance. How would you like to be put into a wheelchair for life by someone with no insurance? As to whether “most good drivers would see their premiums reduced if there was true competition in all aspects of car insurance,” that is a very debatable point. Even if true, the lesser cost would not be enough to nullify all the bad points of private car insurance.

Why should insurance companies be able to give only “some” good drivers better rates? Why not all of them? Unlike ICBC, private companies do not just look at a driver’s record. They look at a raft of other things, A driver can have an excellent record and still pay plenty for private insurance. Because of competition, private insurers have to put drivers into statistical risk categories. In addition to all the information they require from people, they can cancel your insurance without giving you the reason. ICBC can’t cancel it as long as you have your driver’s licence. Once insurance is cancelled, you can be in big trouble. If you are buying a car on a conditional sales agreement, when the insurance is cancelled, the finance company will want full payment of the balance owing. If you can’t pay, they will repossess your car.

In the bad old days of private insurance, there were many repos on car lots. When there was private insurance, you had additional problems when involved in a collision. There was no convenient claims centre. You had to go around to several body shops, get estimates, and then take them back to your agent. If you didn’t like the work done by the body shop, but the adjuster thought it was good enough, you had to argue with the body shop. ICBC made all body shops come up to a standard. Then there were legal hassles in court, Lawyers of one company were fighting the other, with you in between. I readily agree that some executives of ICBC are overpaid. But that is no reason to go back to private car insurance. G. Simpson, Richmond

Significant savings Editor: I would like to thank Times reporter Natasha Jones for her report (The Times. Aug. 23) on fire safety and the financial savings to the community. I called my insurance agent, BCAA, and it in turn contacted the Fire Underwriters (fireunderwriters.ca). They confirmed my home is now in the new tanker-served area. They promptly reduced my insurance premium by $1,100 per year, sent me a pro-rated refund and gave me a free coverage upgrade that was not available to me previously. I expect there are probably hundreds of rural residents that do not know they are paying 30 per cent more in premiums for not having hydrant service. I would also like to thank Assistant Fire Chief Pat Walker for all the hard work that has gone into upgrading fire safety in our area. J. Beauman, Langley

Club Thanked

Editor: I would like to send out a big thank you to the Langley BMX Club for hosting a great national tournament earlier in August. The board members opted to provide the younger riders five and under under with large trophies, many of which were taller than the racers. This made for some very happy kids, great memories and an introduction into a fantastic sport. The entire team of volunteers pulled off a great family event. What a great sporting community to be involved in. Thank you all. Lindsay McIntyre, Langley

Hockey dirty play and brutality need to be dealt with swiftly Editor: The majority of fans may be greatly disappointed if the NHL and its players can’t come to a satisfactory agreement regarding salaries paid, and the upcoming season is cancelled.

Not being an ardent hockey fan, I won’t be greatly affected. As I watch hockey, I am aware of the vast discrepancies in refereeing as compared to other sports that I prefer, football and

soccer, for instance. In these sports, dirty play and brutality are reason for instant discipline, and often dismissal from further play. I believe that a better game could be

had if hockey adopted the same regulations. Mike Harvey, Langley

municipalities do not have jurisdiction, Township council will be asked to debate a motion from Councillor Kim Richter that supports a ban on propane cannons on the grounds that they are “disruptive to area residents and animals (and) are an excessive, intrusive, and inhumane way to control a pest problem.” Abbotsford Councillor Jim Smith is looking for tighter controls for cannons, suggesting a later start in the morning, and a 7:30 p.m. deadline at the end of the day. He called the cannons “intolerable.” The blueberry market generates $150 million in annual sales in the Lower Mainland, and even more from packing and processing. One large flock of starlings can seriously harm a blueberry farm, consuming 10 per cent of a crop. “Birds are a serious problem. Farmers need the tools to protect their crop,” said Ministry of Agriculture berry specialist Mark Sweeney. Given right to farm legislation, the blueberry producers appear to trump residents’ right to live in peace. And that, says one south Langley horse farmer, may well lead to tragedy. continued, PAGE 11

John Reidl has been running a hobby farm with a riding arena in south Langley for 30 years. There is a berry farm two parcels away. Blueberry plants take two to three years to begin producing, and then are harvested all summer long for up to 25 years. And as long as there are blueberries to pick, farmers fire of the cannons. And, he notes, the blueberry season coincides with the show time in the horse industry. The impact on property values is also a huge concern. “We couldn’t sell our place as a horse facility,” Reidl said. “Who in their right mind would buy between two blueberry farms? We are stuck with what we have.” Precarious property values, and rides and lessons that

are limited to the times that farmers cannot fire cannons are bad enough, Reidl says. But he is far more concerned about the safety of riders should a horse bolt after being spooked by a cannon. It was once common to see people riding horses but now, with the fear that horses might bolt, a horse and rider on a leisurely canter in the country has become a rare sight, he said. Imagine, Reidl says, a girl with her feet in the stirrups when her horse bolts and, anchored to the horse, is dragged along until the horse stops. That can only end tragically, he predicts. “It’s not a case of ‘if’ it’s going to happen. It’s a matter of ‘when’ it’s going to happen.” In June, Kevin Mitchell told

Fleming makes it sound like a huge new burden has been dumped on B.C. False. Provincial assessment already must be done with the participation of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Transport Canada, the provincial ministries of natural resources and energy and mines, and of course aboriginal communities. This is why it’s so long and expensive. And don’t be fooled into believing that a federal review would go out and count the tadpoles and caribou again. Only desk jobs have proliferated. There weren’t just two levels of duplicate review, but three. Earlier in their mandate, the B.C. Liberals exempted major projects such as mines and energy generation from local government control, citing the “provincial interest” similar to the federal authority over projects that cross provincial borders. I agree with the NDP that B.C. environmental assessment needs more resources, in particular to do the follow-up on approved projects, as called for by the auditor general. Forest management needs more money too. All the more reason not to waste resources on political gestures.

Days are growing shorter, the air is getting cooler, and summer is coming to an end. It is back to school time and as children return to class, drivers and pedestrians need to be alert for everyone’s safety. “Drivers throughout the community need to slow down and use their road sense,” said the Township’s transportation engineer Richard Welfing. “Children are excited and may not think to put safety first, so it is important that drivers are cautious and obey traffic rules around schools.” Residents in the Yorkson area of Willoughby will have to get used to a new school – and school zone – in their neighbourhood. Lynn Fripps Elementary is opening at 21020 - 83 Ave., and starting on Sept. 4, motorists must look out for youngsters in the area and obey to the new 30 km/h speed limit. Parents dropping off and picking up their children also need to be attentive. “Back to school is a hectic time and parents are often in a rush,” said Welfing, “but you need to focus not just on your child but on all the children and other drivers around you.”

Throughout September, Township bylaw enforcement officers and the Langley RCMP will ensure traffic rules are followed in school zones. “We will conduct enforcement operations to target and educate the public and students about the risk of speeding,” said Staff Sgt. Alex Bodden of the Langley RCMP’s community policing division. He said that police have had problems with pedestrian safety in some areas and will be taking action against those who jaywalk or violate crosswalk signs. “We have been fortunate over the last few years that there have been no significant injuries in school zones — and our goal is to keep it that way,” he said. “A lot of harm can be prevented by simply slowing down and paying attention.” “We encourage parents to remind their children about the rules of the road and go over their route to school with them,” added local ICBC road safety coordinator Leanne Cassap. Older children need to be reminded about road safety, too, and drivers should expect busier Enrol in our T roads at this time of year and therefore allow extra time, shecomprehensiv added.

Celebrate the economic and social contribution of workers For many British Columbians, Labour Day may simply mean the last extended weekend of the summer. It is important to remember it is a day to celebrate working people and the contribution they make to our province and the quality of life we enjoy.

important legislature to impact workers in the following century. Union pioneers petitioned their employers for a reduction in the number of hours worked - asking that their workweek be reduced to six, 9-hour days. They formed an organization dubbed the Nine Hours Movement and argued that reducing working hours would benefit both workers and society as more time would be spent with family and community. Employers scoffed at their claims and rejected their demands. At the time it was a crime to be member of a union in Canada yet in a

The rights that workers have today such as a 40hour work week, minimum wage, parental leave and paid holidays were hard fought for in times when labourers had few benefits, no voice and worked in perilous conditions. Many of the protections and rights that today’s employees have exist because of unions. Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday of every September and this year on September 3 it will be in a show of solidarity for working people across the country and beyond. The origins of this national holiday are rooted in the history of the Canadian labour movement that began in the time of Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald. From a bold stand by a group of Ontario printers in May of 1872 grew the most

courageous act of defiance, the Toronto Typographical Union went on strike to secure the nine-hour workday. A parade was held which drew some 10,000 spectators. The workers went on strike. Many lost their job and were forced to relocate. Their employers brought in replacement workers and used this so called ‘conspiracy’ to have 24 members of the movement arrested and jailed. SEPT 3 On June 14, 1872 Macdonald passed the Trade Union Act that legalized union activity, freed the workers and endeared him to the working class. The Toronto printers strike paved the way for unions across North America to demand a 54hour workweek. Canadian trade unionists have ever since, celebrated this day that has been set aside to honor ‘those who labour.’ The first Labour Day parade was held in Winnipeg in 1894, and was two miles long. Today approximately 30 percent of BC’s workforce is covered by a collective agreement. As Labour Day has evolved it remains a day of celebration, solidarity, speeches and recreation. The issues facing workers have also evolved. Today’s labour unions negotiate on behalf of a changing workforce in an ever-evolving workplace. British Columbians have different challenges to deal with, whether it is record-high housing prices, increasing levels of debt and living longer. Minimum wage, overtime, working conditions for farmworkers, health and safety and access to affordable daycare are all important labour issues. This Labour Day, take a moment to reflect on the history and significance of the day.

Labour Day! 2012

The Langley Times • Thursday, August 30, 2012 • 19

Labour Day message by Jim Sinclair PRESIDENT, B.C. FEDERATION OF LABOUR The origins of Labour Day in Canada trace back 140 years to 1872 and a parade held in support of a Toronto union’s strike for a 58-hour work week. Back then, union activity was illegal in Canada and 24 workers were jailed for their role in the strike. An outcry of support and rally on September 3 of 1873 led Prime Minister John A. MacDonald to commit to repealing the law banning union activity, helping to lay the groundwork for real progress for working people. Since 1894, when Prime Minister John Thompson declared Labour Day an official holiday, working people have celebrated our gains and honored those who fought for the rights and privileges we enjoy today. Unfortunately, the last 30 years has seen a troubling growth in inequality in our society. From World War II through 1980, working people shared equally in the gains of productivity with shareholders and owners through higher wages and improved purchasing power. But from 1980 forward, while productivity increased at an even greater rate, workers’ wages stagnated and all gains of productivity have gone to owners and senior executives. Today’s middle class family feels like they are having a harder time making ends meet, because they are. Meanwhile, the rich have never been so rich. On this Labour Day, however, I look forward with optimism that we are turning a corner towards

greater equality. Front-line workers in BC’s public service are negotiating for fair and reasonable wage increases. And despite the intransigence of Christy Clark and Kevin Falcon, polling consistently shows that women and men across British Columbia support these workers in their simple demand to not fall further behind or lose rights they and their predecessors fought to secure. Tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy are too often

invested in overseas companies or simply held as cash, creating no local economic activity. But when working people earn more, they tend to spend it in their own communities. Just ask business owners in Trail, where employees of Teck Resources, represented by the United Steelworkers, negotiated a $10,000 signing bonus earlier this year. Trail businesses in every sector, from auto sales to restaurants to retail, immediately reported a significant increase in economic activity in their community. These agreements are setting a pattern for wage growth for all working people, whether in a union or not. This is good news for working and middle class families and it’s also good news for our economy. Liveable communities are anchored in a strong middle class and it was unions who were responsible for the development of the middle class. This Labour Day, as investment bankers and CEOs fight to hold on to a greater and greater share of the wealth working people generate, unions remain as relevant as they were 140 years ago when our predecessors fought to reduce the work week to fewer than 60 hours. We continue to fight for better work and better lives for all Canadians, and I am hopeful that we are turning a corner towards better times for us all.

Cross-border shopping by bargain-hunting Canadians got a new lift in recent months with higher duty-free limits for overnight trips introduced in June. But Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Ken Opplinger said he believes the increased flow of B.C. residents heading south this summer was relatively modest. He was reacting to new Statistics Canada data showing a 7.5 per cent jump in overnight travel to the U.S. in June. “There’s been an increase since June but not nearly so much as other places,” Opplinger said. “It’s pretty small here.” Bellingham had already been experiencing heavy flows of Lower Mainland shoppers coming south for some time, he said, thanks to a combination of B.C.’s introduction of the harmonized sales tax in 2010 and the rise to parity of the Canadian dollar. “We’ve certainly had substantial increases for a little over two years since the HST first hit,” Opplinger said. “It’s certainly the highest we’ve seen since the early 1990s.” Canada Border Services Agency staff have also been “much more lax” in checking returning Canadians and enforcing duty payments, he added. Another draw continues to be the sometimes wide differential between prices retailers charge in Canada compared to stores in the U.S. Opplinger said his office is still working to defuse friction after some Bellingham locals accused deal-crazed Canadians of being impolite or pushy and set up a Facebook page demanding the local Costco

First-time buyers an important market

Appealing to the younger buyer It takes a lot of skill and savvy to market a home. You have to know who you want to reach and how to do it. Several developments in the Lower Mainland have adopted a very chic, very hip approach to reaching their client bases in the past year. The Ultra Urban Village development – located in Surrey’s Central City – has taken a modern approach. The 40-storey, 362-unit tower is just a block away from SFU’s Surrey campus, and marketing manager Joanna Bysterveld says developer WestStone Properties definitely targeted students with Ultra’s marketing, which features ads and websites covered in pink.

“We’re trying to aim toward very chic, very trendy with Ultra,” she says. The homes at Ultra ooze with style. The kitchen cupboards have a vertical wood grain that gives the room a subtle stripe theme. The suites also come with the ultimate hip signifier: undermount sinks, cut right into the granite, that look like they belong in a factory. An amenity centre packs in a theatre room that can be booked for movie nights and hockey parties, and Bysterveld says that has been a hit with younger buyers, who have flocked to the project. For more information, visit urbanvillageliving.com.

He also notes that Portrait’s awardwinning reputation is drawing in buyers. Portrait has won a total of 105 major industry awards, including 27 Gold Georgie Awards, several national SAM Awards and the Avid Diamond Award for Best Customer Service Experience in Canada this year. “People are really wanting peace of mind,” Steine says. “We’re giving that to them with this project.” Portrait started out in Surrey, Steine says, and is pleased to return to the area. He is particularly excited about the technology that will be available at the sales centre. “It’s going to be an innovative iPad interactive feature,” he says. It will give potential buyers the ability to

choose their home, colour scheme and finishings right on the iPad. They are then given a printout of what they chose to take home with them. “It’s a very detailed presentation,” Steine says. The development is already under construction, and Steine says buyers will be able to start taking possession by the end of October or early November. There will be six phases in the project, and those who buy before construction on their home begins will have more choice available to them on their finishings. Pricing will start in the low $300,000s. For more information and to pre-register, visit www. portraithomes.ca/communities/ panoramawoods.

Livability at a great price point

Portrait returns to Surrey with Panorama Woods by Kerry Vital

Portrait Homes is bringing something different to Surrey with its latest townhouse development, Panorama Woods. With a great central location and plenty of green space, buyers are sure to find a sense of serenity with their new home. Located just minutes from Highway 99, getting where you need to go will never be an issue. There are several schools in the area, as well as shopping and leisure activities such as golfing and walking trails. “It’s really central to anywhere you want to go,” says Troy Steine, vicepresident of marketing and sales for Portrait Homes. “It’s very convenient.” That convenience is continued with the on-site clubhouse, which will feature a lounge area with a kitchen, exercise room and a guest suite, among other amenities. However, it’s the homes themselves that are really drawing people in. “The floorplans are very livable,” says Steine. One special feature of the homes at Panorama Woods is the powder room on the main floor, something that Steine says Portrait is happy to offer its buyers with this project. With a variety of three-bedroom plans available, there is truly something for everyone at Panorama Woods. The homes range from approximately 1,380 to over 1,700 square feet, all with a modern open-plan layout. “How we build and finish the homes is really going to be something Surrey hasn’t seen for a long time,” says Steine. “There is a very high level of standard finishings available.” Some of those standard finishings include nine-foot ceilings throughout the main level and an electric fireplace that is perfect for curling up in front of at the end of a long day. “The kitchens are very usable,” says Steine. With designer-selected granite countertops and a hand-set ceramic tile backsplash, the kitchens are a gourmet’s dream. The stainless-steel appliances and chic contemporary cabinets are complemented by the modern track lighting in the kitchen that easily illuminates your every task without lending a harsh light to the proceedings. The master suites are relaxing and elegant, with a hand-set ceramic tile tub surround and ensuite floor, large separate shower stalls and tons of closet space. The cabinets with their sleek

knobs and pulls are fitted with softclose drawers and doors as a thoughtful little touch. Portrait is planning to hold its grand opening in late September or early October, but Steine says that those who pre-register will be able to get a sneak peek at the homes before they officially open. “If they register now, they have the opportunity to meet with our sales staff the week before opening,” he says. “It’s a good opportunity … and gives them the ability to choose their home before grand opening day. They will want to act on that very quickly.” Portrait only recently started allowing pre-registration for Panorama Woods, and Steine says that there are already a few dozen people registered. “There are a lot of people looking in our price range,” he says. “I think we’re really fitting the bill there.”

How we build and finish the homes is really going to be something Surrey hasn’t seen for a long time,” says Troy Steine, viceresident of marketing and sales for Portrait Homes.

Milking a business for all it’s worth Natasha JoNes Times Reporter

Milner Valley Cheese is a fledgling business that is booming in the bucolic setting of one of Langley’s oldest and prettiest communities. Cheese made from the milk of goats is the mainstay of Milner Valley Cheese which is run by Glenn and Marianne Smith and their sons, Gregg and Brad. It opened just before Christmas 2010, and since then Marianne, who is most often behind the counter, has noticed a surge in customers who are buying goat cheese because they, or someone they know, have an allergy or intolerance to products made with cow’s milk. Cheese making is an art, and to perfect it she studied at the University of Guelph and universities in Washington and Idaho. Marianne concedes that it was a trial and error start, and she’s still learning as she works her way through a 10-hour day. In such peaceful surroundings, it’s not surprising that this is an ideal workplace. Then there’s the obvious pleasure of seeing customers’ delight

at finding Langley-produced goat cheeses, but seeing familiar faces return again and again is the highlight for Marianne. To many, the appealing element of a farmstead and artisanal product is that the cheeses are made by hand on the farm from goats bred, raised and milked on the farm. “We have total control of our animals and the milk they produce,” Marianne said, adding that the milk is pasteurized. The Smith Farm keeps a herd of between 60 and 70 Saanen, Nubian and Alpine goats, the latter two known for the rich quality of their milk. In order to maintain maximum health, the goats graze on unpolluted grass, and are also fed grain and hay. No artificial preservatives or additives are used in the production of the cheese. Just how good is the product? On the day she took The Times on a tour of the operation, Marianne learned that Milner Valley Cheese won top prize in the PNE’s fresh cheese category for its chevre. And, she points out, the soft cheese is not the same as cream cheese. This delicious cheese can

be used in recipes that call for sour cream, in a lasagna, on pizza, in a quiche, on bagels, crackers and sandwiches, paired with nuts or fresh pairs, peaches and nectarines, on sliced tomatoes garnished with herbs, then broiled, and tossed on cooked vegetables, The farmstead store is in what used to be a woodshed, then converted to a garage for the attached old farm house where the Smiths live. It was built 101 years ago. The shop carries Milner Jack, jalapeno, aged, peppercorn, cumin, chili, Colby (a popular mild sandwich cheese) cheese curds, chevre and feta. The curds are sold on Fridays only. The freezer is loaded with lamb chops, lamb stew and leg of lamb ready for roasting, all from the animals raised by the Smiths, and a small line of gifts, including soap made with goat milk. Milner Valley Cheese is at 21479 Smith Crescent. The farm shop is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 1 p.m. to 5:30 and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Natasha JONES/Langley Times

Top photo: Marianne Smith checks the PH balance of a batch of goats milk. The milk in the vat is enough to make about 10 wheels each weighing about 10 pounds, plus cheese curds. Bottom: Wheels of goat cheese are in the final stages of the ripening process.

Proposed building faces public hearing

Natasha JoNes Times Reporter

The Coulter Berry Building proposed for the corner of Glover Road and Mavis Street in Fort Langley will likely form part of a public hearing in the autumn. Last month, council initiated the process for a development variance and a heritage alteration permit by asking staff to bring forward the application. The decision did not sit well with Councillor Kim Richter who said that at three storeys, the development exceeds guidelines for Fort Langley. Councillors Bob Long and David Davis joined Richter in opposing the next step of the process to develop the property occupied for decades by the IGA. The grocery store, destroyed by fire in January, 2011, is being rebuilt on the east end of the property. “Somehow in my mind it doesn’t fit,” Richter said. “It could be the leading edge of the change of what Fort Langley is going to be.” The permits would require a public hearing. Councillor Charlie Fox said that council needs to see the plans before it can decide whether it can proceed to a hearing. He said that at this point council is neither supporting nor circumventing the process. Long was not comfortable with staff inviting the proponent to file an application. “Is this due process? Why wouldn’t the proponent apply like anyone else?” Richter agreed. “I think the logic is a bit faulty,” she said. Councillor Grant Ward criticized Richter’s stand. “I think Councillor Richter is trying to jump the gun,” he said. “It seems to me that this council needs to know exactly what this is all about,” Ward said.

Come find your I’ll Have Another Two years ago, a yearling named I’ll Have Another sold for $11,000. This year, ridden by B.C.’s own Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the hearts of horse racing fans around the world. He won more than $2.7 million in prize money for his owner. And it all started at a sale just like the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Annual Yearling & Mixed Sale. I’ll Have Another is an enormous success story, but there have been many other less publicized stories. Hundreds of prize winning horses have come from the CTHS-BC sale throughout its 60-year history. Recent 26507_CTHS_Ad_14i.pdf 1 12-08-24 retiree, Spaghetti Mouse, was purchased in the 2003 sale and the horse has since won

close to $1 million, all earned at Hastings Racecourse. And prominent local horse owner Glen Todd purchased Taylor Said for $9,000 in the 2009 sale. It has earned $278,000, including a huge win in the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs in Seattle earlier this year. See the future of thoroughbred horse racing in B.C. Find your I’ll Have Another. aged to visit and spot the next big winner. The 85-acre Thunderbird Show Park is one of North America’s premier equestrian facilities and it’s located right in your backyard. Enjoy the afternoon with live music and a snack, and see where the journey begins for these magnificent animals. The CTHS Yearling Parade on September 10 and Annual Yearling & Mixed Sale on September 11 are two of the largest displays of horse racing talent in the country. Everyone who visits is eligible to win the grand prize draw of an all-expense-paid trip to California to watch the 2012 Breeders’ Cup, November 2-3, 2012, at Santa Anita Park in Los Angeles.

Student honoured Kwantlen Polytechnic University student Grant Steinberg is one of 30 students from across North America to win a $500 Jacobsen Turfgrass Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to students entering their final year in a full-time turfgrass management program. “I have a rich background in all areas that are golf course related, and this program seemed like a necessity in my pursuit to become a true golfindustry professional,” said Steinberg. “He shows remarkable skill as a problem solver and is showing great promise as incoming

Turf Club president. Grant is a skilled golfer, a caring family man and appears to have a bright future in our industry,” said Stan Kazymerchyk, an instructor in the school’s turfgrass management program. Candidates submitted essays and professor recommendations to be considered for the scholarships.. In Kwantlen’s turfgrass management diploma program students learn how to manage the largest green spaces in communities and are involved in the ongoing development of the turf management field lab. Langley Rams receiver Malcolm Williams (#81) caught five passes during his team’s 34-3 victory over the Okanagan Sun on Saturday at McLeod Park, including his seventh touchdown of the season. Williams returned to the gridiron after sitting out last season.

Williams making up for lost time

After a year away from his ‘first love’ Malcolm Williams is back making an impact on the football field Gary ahuja Times Sports

Malcolm Williams is a happy guy. Spending a few minutes with him before practice, and he has an ever present cheek-to-cheek grin. “He has fun every day,” said Langley Rams coach Jeff Alamolhoda. “You never see Malcolm without a smile on his face.” About the only people not smiling when it comes to Williams are the defensive backs who have to line up opposite the sixfoot-three wide receiver during the B.C. Junior Football Conference season. Since getting into the Rams line-up in week two, Williams has been

sensational, catching seven touchdown passes and racking up nearly 300 yards receiving. Not surprisingly, Langley is off to a 3-0-1 start to the season after Saturday’s 34-3 win over the Okanagan Sun (see side story). “I don’t know (the secret),” Williams said with a laugh. “Everybody is asking me lately and I don’t know what to give them as an answer. “Just running hard and trying to make every play I can for my team,” he offered. The 19-year-old from Maple Ridge ended up with the Rams after taking last year off football. Recruited out of Pitt

Meadows Secondary, where he excelled in both football and basketball, he chose to play the latter with the UBC Thunderbirds. It marked the first time since he was seven years old that he was not on the football field. “Not playing was tough,” he admitted about being away from the gridiron, although he watched as much UBC football as he could. “It was hard but I had my hands full with basketball.” As a guard on the Thunderbirds team, Williams averaged 7.7 points and 2.3 rebounds in just over 20 minutes of action per game. However, struggles in the classroom took their toll. “The school part didn’t go so great for me,” he said, adding that he is attending classes at Langara College to upgrade some of his marks. With no basketball team to play for, Williams returned to the sport he

calls his “first love.” He arrived at tryouts for the Rams with little fan fare. “He contacted us,” Alamolhoda said. “(Malcolm) has taken his opportunity and ran with it. He came into our program as a non-starter and worked his way into the starting line-up. “And for someone as talented as he is, you would think he would have an attitude or something that he wasn’t starting right away.” “But he just worked real hard, earned his spot, his starting role, and when he got on the field for the first time, he wouldn’t let us take him off.” Williams is tied for the league lead with seven touchdowns and leads in points with 44 — courtesy of a two-point convert attempt he caught in week two. He is tied for second in receptions with 16 and third

in yards with 298. What makes Williams tough to defend is the combination of his size and athleticism. “I like the fact I am a little taller than most DBs; I like to use my height to my advantage,” Williams said. “Try to use some of my rebounding skills from basketball against some of the smaller DBs.” Alamolhoda said Williams presents a ‘catching radius’ and the quarterback can throw the ball to where only his receiver can make the play. “His body control is outstanding; he knows how to use his body in space and with other people around him,” said Alamolhoda. “He knows how to use his body in space and with other people around him. “Obviously our quarterback likes the way he has an outlet like that (to use).”

The margin of victory may have been smaller than in previous weeks, but it was his team’s effort that really impressed Jeff Alamolhoda. The Rams (3-0-1) stayed unbeaten in B.C. Junior Football Conference action after a 34-3 win over the Okanagan Sun on Saturday at McLeod Park. “It was definitely a hard-fought win, something our guys really wanted to go after,” Alamolhoda said. “They definitely didn’t take any plays off; they played a full 60 minutes.” That was a problem the coach expressed following a 66-8 win in week three against the Chilliwack Huskers. Against the Sun, the Rams defence limited Okanagan to two first downs in the first half. For the game, Okanagan managed just 215 yards of total offence. By comparison, the Rams racked up 385 yards — 197 on the ground and 196 in the air. Quarterback Greg Bowcott threw another two touchdowns — Malcolm Williams and Michael Patko were the recipients — while rushing for one himself. The other major came courtesy of the defence as Jordan Linnen returned an interception for a touchdown. The defence also had another pick and a turnover on downs. One area of concern for Alamolhoda was penalties as the team picked up flags at crucial times on both sides of the ball, halting promising drives as well as extending a couple of Okanagan possessions. But overall, the coach is happy heading into the league’s bye week. The Rams play Sept. 8 at McLeod Park against the 1-3 Kamloops Broncos.

Thunder one win from WLA title After scoring a 8-7 double overtime victory in game four, the Langley Thunder failed in their first chance to clinch the Western Lacrosse Association championship. The Thunder lost 7-6 on Monday at the Langley Events Centre to the Coquitlam Adanacs and the victory trimmed Langley’s lead to 3-2 in the best-ofseven senior A lacrosse championship series. Langley has two chances to clinch their second consecutive WLA title: last night in Coquitlam (after The Times’ press deadline). If necessary, the two teams will play a seventh and deciding game tomorrow (Friday) at the LEC. See www.langleytimes.com for up-todate information on the series. Gary AHUJA/Langley Times

Club hosts kickoff event The Langley United Soccer Association — the association has dropped ‘youth’ from its name to reflect the fact it now offers adult teams — is hosting its first annual Labour Day weekend grassroots barbecue and soccer festival on Saturday (Sept. 1). The event, for the association’s U6 to U12 boys and girls teams, is at the artificial turf fields at Willoughby Community Park. The barbecue is free for all players but they must pre-register. As of earlier this month, the club had reached 1,926 players in the U5 to U18 divisions — including 406 girls in the first year LUSA is offering a full girls program — a record high for the association. Some space is still available for the younger age groups. For more information, visit www. luysa.com.

Aldergrove’s Stradling shines on world stage KURT LANGMANN Black Press

Aldergrove equestrienne Haley Stradling has brought home gold medals

and buckles for her outstanding performances in cutting horse competitions in Canada and abroad. Stradling was

selected by the American Quarter Horse Association to represent Canada at the recent AQHA’s Youth World Cup in Kreuth, Germany.

She was up against representatives of 14 other countries. Cutting was the first event and Stradling, 15, put down a brilliant run aboard Wild at

Youth Champion and AQHA Regional Cutting Junior Youth Champion, as well as 2011 BCQHA Youth Year End Champion. Stradling also picked up a buckle in cutting at the Calgary Stampede. Cutting is an event in which the rider and horse take a cow out of a herd of 45 one at a time and prevent it from returning to the herd.

Our dearly beloved Margaret passed away peacefully with loving family around her at Surrey Memorial Hospital on Friday, Aug 17th. She will be missed by many friends, family and the countless number of people she had touched during her career as a nurse. Margaret always had a love for children as she was a pediatric nurse for over 40 years at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster and after her retirement was very involved in working with children’s programs through her church. This and her love of travel kept Margaret young at heart.
