Rimbey’s leaky lagoon letting in groundwater By Amelia Naismith Rimbey’s northeast sewage lagoon has underground water leaking through its fifth cell due to pressure. But since the cell is still under warranty it won’t cost the town to have it repaired. The earliest start date for the repair works of the clay liner in cell 5 of Rimbey’s northeast sewage lagoon is Sept. 10. According to CAO Tony Goode, the new lagoon, finished in 2009, was built over an artesian spring. Goode described the spring as being similar to a volcano. “Basically it’s a high water table.” ISL engineer Robert Perrault further explained the lagoon was built over an area where water breaks off the surface. However, an older lagoon system was in the same location in the mid 1960s and it was built before water started coming to the surface. The water has compromised the berm under the lining of the cell, which was prepared under warranty. The town has had ISL Engineering and Tagesh Engineering work together to review remediation plans. Clay from the Bergham property, which the town owns, will be used in the new plans. “We believe adequate, suitable clay is there to rebuild the berm,” said Goode However, if this doesn’t rectify the situation the town currently has no plans for the situation in the future. Perrault says a backup plan will be developed if that bridge needs to be crossed. Back when the lagoon was constructed the town had to approve the plans. This was before Goode was involved in the project and he isn’t aware of who would have approved the lagoon. When the new system was constructed, thicker than normal clay liners were developed. “What we have built there is a high-quality clay lined cell,” said Perrault. Contractors built a hole to keep the ground water low. According to Perrault the lining in the northwest corner of cell 5 wasn’t built properly. “Will it leak again? Probably not. Is that a 100 per cent guarantee? No,” said Perrault. Before the new lagoon system was built it was recommended that a lift station be built on the left side of the highway to move wastewater back to the south lagoon. But the station was never built. Library hopes to expand home By Amelia Naismith Rimbey’s Town Office or public library could be on the move. Town council has decided to send a formal inquiry to the provincial government about the cost to purchase the Rimbey Provincial Building as a new location to house the town office. This decision was made in wake of the library’s presentation at the Aug.20 council meeting advising that, somehow, the
library needs to spread. The square footage of the library is around 2,630, although it wasn’t known for sure, and that’s less than half of what is should be based on Rimbey’s population without calculating future population growth. The library offers 336 programs, has 6,631 program participants and 1,200 cardholders. In 2011 the library had 35,000 visitors. Continued on Page 7

Long-time farmer earns golden award By Amelia Naismith One of Bentley’s long-time farming family’s has just struck gold. The 2012 Golden Furrow Award was presented to the Nelson family, who live near Bentley, for outstanding agricultural contributions and community service. The Golden Furrow Award was created in 2005 to honour agricultural pioneers of central Alberta. “In this nomination the focus was Glen Nelson, said Sunnybrook Farm Museum executive director Ian Warwick. was missing, said Warwick, referring to the nominee who didn’t receive the award. The award committee looked at Nelson’s numerous contributions to the community and decided this year to honour those contributions. According to a Sunnybrook Farm Museum release Nelson served 15 years as a delegate with the Alberta Wheat Pool, nine years as a Lacombe county councilor, four years as a member of the Lacombe Regional Hospital Board, five years as the secretary/treasure of the Gull Lake Gas Coo-op, 10 years as secretary/treasure and director of the Deer Creek Gas Co-op, as well as serving the Bentley United Church for 42 years in various positions and coaching hockey for 14 years.
“It was a nightly thing. I’d work all day and do this at night, said Nelson. Nelson also designed tractor cabs, cranes and hopper-bottom bins for when he needed them around the farm. He also built a few for his neighbors. “It was a hobby. It never amounted to much, Nelson said, except its contribution to his award. “This is an individual and a family that cares deeply about their community and they’re giving back. That’s mainly what the award is about, said Warwick. As impressed as the museum is with Nelson, he’s just as impressed with them. “I’d sure like to applaud the Sunnybrook Farms for everything they’re doing, Nelson said. “They’ve got a great thing for the kids.

Canadians have backed themselves into a corner, thanks to low interest rates. The global economy, already fairly anemic, is slowing even more. Government plans depend on growth to lift them up and out of deficit spending, while the rest of us need ever-increasing earnings that keep stock prices moving upward for our mutual funds and pensions. Japan has showed us what happens in such a scenario. For two decades now it has been treading water. It has had the lowest interest rates in the world for most of that time — and has run horrific deficits, piling up a huge government debt. Between an aging population — Japan is the first nation to flip from having more old people than young people — and a moribund economy — there’s been no growth in financial assets in Japan. As a result, Japanese investment funds and pensions have been struggling, too. If Japan had to face Canadian interest rates, it would tip the balance and force the Japanese government to either immediately slash its “stimulus” spending (20 years’ worth has made no difference but has kept things ticking over) to balance its books, or to unleash inflation to depreciate their debts by destroying the value of the yen, or to default on its debt. It can’t afford the interest charges, period. Yet, without higher interest rates, the Japanese economy can’t restart. Nor can those on fixed incomes have an income that preserves what capital they have. Canada has similar woes ahead of it.
The federal government, and some of the Bruce A. Stewart provinces, could probaGuest Columnist bly manage higher rates. Troy Media Unlike Japan, which eschews immigration, Canada’s population continues to grow. Immigrants also help with its demographic transition issues. Some other provinces — notably Québec and Ontario — can’t. Each run massive deficits, have accumulated debts that are way beyond their ability to pay, and depend on interest rates staying low for any chance of survival because paying interest is now the second largest item in their provincial budgets. If interest rates went back to their historic levels of three per cent plus inflation (say five to six per cent today) it would bankrupt them both. But unlike Japan, which has spent the last two decades building national infrastructure — new rail lines, new roads, new airports, new hospitals and the like (as part of its spending to support the economy there), Canada has done nowhere near enough in this area. Most of Canada’s infrastructure is in need of repair or replacement, after years of government neglect. Now, the massive infrastructure investment required comes at the same time as the country faces economic pressure to provide needed services, such as welfare, employment insurance, pension top ups and a strained health care system due to an aging population. Low interest rates are also eating away at our pen-
sions. The wow rates have eaten away at fund managers’ ability to earn enough to outpace the needs of those in the plan. South of the border, the near-zero rates offered by the Fed have moved the U.S. Social Security system 10 years closer to insolvency. Only a handful of the S&P 500 companies with pension plans for their employees actually have all the money they need to meet their obligations, despite years of top up contributions.. The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and the Caisse in Québec (which manages the funds in the Québec Pension Plan) have done a little better. Canadian companies have not. Neither have our public sector pensions: the Ontario Teachers’ pension plan, to name just one, has almost a $10 billion deficit relative to needs. What does this mean? It means we have choices to make as citizens. We can’t just sit back and “wait for growth” to come and rescue us. Neither can we simply demand “stimulus” to try and trigger it. Thirty per cent of Canada’s output is exported so, when the globe slows, so do we. We’d better plan on solving our problems without growth this time. There are good reasons out there to argue for both low interest rates — even with what it does to retirees — and for higher ones — even with what it does to government services. What we have to do is to think through which outcome we want. We have to choose a future — because we can’t have it all. Troy Media columnist Bruce A. Stewart is a Toronto-based management consultant.
Alberta Party’s crisis of its own making Alberta’s namesake party is facing an existential crisis. Just two years after its formation, the nascent Alberta Party is losing its leader after an electoral shutout in April. And now party operatives are pondering whether, at its annual general membership meeting on Sept. 22, it should soldier on, disband or turn itself into a think tank focused on progressive ideas. With a stillborn performance like this, it must feel like the Social Credit of the centre-left: irrel-

Help Steeves be Small Town Hero Dear Editor: Congratulations to Erin Steeves for making it into the top 10 in the UFA Small Town Heroes contest. That means Erin has already won $2,500 for the community charity of her choice. Kudos to the Rimbey Review for their commendable job covering this contest. Three things that I want to highlight: 1. If Erin wins first or second place, it’s really Rimbey who wins. $10,000 will be awarded to the community organization of Erin’s choice and Rimbey will win a Paul Brandt concert. 2. People can vote online every 24 hours. Just Google UFA Small Town Heroes and go to Nominees Gallery. The votes count for 10 per cent. As of Aug. 23, based on votes, Erin is in third place with the person in fourth moving up quickly. 3. I would suggest that when you vote, a specific comment about how Erin has affected you or your family might be helpful to the UFA panel of judges. Sharon Fehr
evant, largely ignored and not an organization Doug Firby anyone would construe Guest Columnist as a future contender. Troy Media The contrast couldn’t be more vivid between the Alberta Party and another recent rookie movement — the Wildrose Alliance, a fiscally conservative/socially libertarian party which, under the leadership of Danielle Smith, came within a hair’s breadth of winning that same provincial election. It wasn’t that the Alberta Party lacked leadership. Former Hinton mayor Glenn Taylor had an amiable image and a grassroots political presence. It also had “brand” on its side. Naming your party after the province appears to have populist potential — after all, it worked in Saskatchewan, where the right-wing Saskatchewan Party overcame the baggage associated with the previous corruptiontainted Progressive Conservative Party, and rode to electoral success. Actually, the Alberta Party has the literal name but the Wildrose name might actually come closer to capturing the essence of the province. But it was something else that failed to impress voters. Perhaps it was the contrived sense of entitlement — that this party somehow had a vision of a better way, without clearly enunciating what the better way would look like. Better governance? Greater accountability? I think we’ve all heard these lines before. Note to policy wonks: Show us the money. I think it may have had something to do with haste. It’s no secret that some of the forces behind the Alberta Party also had their hands in the election of the progressive and popular Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. There was a sense that the surprising come-from-nowhere success in that campaign could be simply escalated to the provincial level. Instead, party politics at the provincial and federal levels are both more complex and more deeply entrenched. Histories are longer, policies more completely evolved and traditions more deeply bound. The Wildrose succeeded as well as it did (and, to be clear, that party’s greatest hour may yet come) because it had simple and clear policy positions and
even claimed to be the rightful heirs to Alberta’s conservative tradition. Compare that advanced state to the other new kids on the block. What traditions are the Alberta Party rooted in? A few years ago, I was part of a group in Alberta that considered founding a new political party based on fiscal conservatism and environmental stewardship. We invited Preston Manning, the closest thing in Canada to a political wise man, to one of our meetings, seeking insights from his early days of the Reform movement. The advice he delivered then could easily apply to the Alberta Party establishment today. Preston’s advice was to take time and get your ideas in place as a social movement before even considering an entrance into the political arena. Your ideas are what will be how the public measure your group’s value as a movement; launching such a movement before those ideas are fully formed will ultimately doom the cause to failure. In simpler terms, there’s no point in having sizzle if there’s no steak. Our little group never got beyond the idea stage, but the concept of environmentally-friendly conservatism has found its way into the public discourse. That is in part a credit to Manning, who has emerged as a leader in the fiscally conservative/environmentally responsible ethic. Manning’s advice on getting the values right first is what the Alberta Party should have received, but apparently did not. Perhaps the best thing for the Alberta Party to do at this moment is to take a step back, and get the horse back in front of the cart. No matter how catchy the name, no one will vote for a party that doesn’t have its elevator pitch polished to a high shine. If you can’t say in a few words what you stand for, you’ll never connect with the people whose support you need. There’s no shortcut to spending a few years in church basements and community halls getting up close and personal with the province whose name you aspire to wear. Thieves steal donated items This past week the Rimbey RCMP responded to 40 calls for service. The investigations consisted of collisions, property crime offences and drug files. Suspected thief arrested On Aug. 18 Rimbey RCMP were investigating a recovered stolen truck west of town. The investigation revealed that a Rimbey man was responsible for this offence. Going to his residence to arrest him, the police found he had barricaded a door to prevent police from getting inside. Fortunately for the police, the suspect neglected to barricade the other door and police enter the residence and arrested the male. Subsequently a search warrant was executed, a quantity of cocaine and several electronics stolen from a break and enter in Ponoka were located. Aaron Olson, 29, of Rimbey has been charged with possession of the stolen truck and electronics, as well as possession of cocaine. He remains in custody. Dope found in home RCMP executed a search warrant Aug. 21 on a Rimbey residence to search for drugs. A quantity of marijuana bud was located along with marijuana seeds and an unsecured rifle. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending. Donations stolen Heartless thieves have targeted charitable organizations this past week. In one case, someone stole several items donated to the Tickle Trunk. In the other case, someone cut the wire cords off of appliances at the Give and Take located at the Rimbey
Recycle depot. In addition to arresting the culprits, police are hoping karma can intervene in these cases. Several vehicle collisions in area RCMP responded to several serious vehicle collisions. One in the Leedale area saw two teenage sisters who were involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle, airlifted to hospital in critical condition. A dirt biker at the motocross track crashed and also had to be airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Support our Small Town Hero Some people say that God created police so firemen could have heroes. But in one case a volunteer firefighter is a hero to the RCMP. On just one day this past week, Erin Steeves responded to a collision north of town and assisted in freeing a trapped woman, later that day she was seen cleaning up after a party that was held in her honor at a local park. Erin is a top 10 finalist in the UFA Small Town Heroes competition. RCMP are requesting everyone vote as often as you can for Steeves at www.ufa.com/smalltownheroes/. If she wins then Rimbey will get a free Paul Brandt concert. Thank you Erin for all you do in the community. If you have any information on these or any other crimes, please call the Rimbey RCMP at (403) 8432224 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477, #8477 on Telus Mobility or *8477 on Rogers AT&T. Crime Stoppers is a community program that does work. Do your part and call now.

Small town rally for Erin Steeves By Amelia Naismith Dozens of community members attended the UFA Small Town Heroes Rally to support Rimbey’s “Erin the Awesome.” Erin Steeves was nominated by co-workers at the Rimbey library for the contest that could bring $10,000 and Paul Brandt to Rimbey. Being in the top 10, even if she doesn’t win Steeves will still receive $2,500.
The rally Aug. 22 at the Lions Park, was a celebration of Steeves and everything she does for her community. “I look at you with complete admiration,” Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins told Steeves. Her library employer, Jean Keetch, said Steeves was her hero and a real hero. Steeves is in third place in the contest but voting doesn’t end until Aug. 31. People can vote for Steeves online at www.ufa.com/smalltownheros/nominees every 24 hours. The judges choose winners based on their impact in the community, 70 per cent; originality of the nomination, 20 per cent; and votes, 10 per cent.
It’s all in the family: Gene Steeves, Erin’s father, signs the UFA Small Town Heroes support wall. Photos by Amelia Naismith

Bentley’s parade draws entries, fans from everywhere By June Norvila Perfect weather was a treat for the myriad of Bentley parade watchers. The route was packed with families and people of all ages who were offered free popcorn and lemonade out on the sidewalk by Servus Credit Union staff while waiting in the mid down town area. Kids were waiting in anticipation, ready with their treat bags to snatch up any treats tossed their way. The theme this year honored the Sunset Hills Riding Club’s 50th anniversary. The club was formed in March of 1962. A parade through town, which continues to this day, was organized by members the following year. Despite there being no marching band there was still music, some of it recognizably that of Bentley’s own Dick Damron. For the second time, parade organizer JoAnn Butcher got sponsors and donations for winning entrants of the different categories to go along with a trophy. In the Commercial Section, the Best Overall and the Best Decorated Float went to the Monkey Top. Land Solutions’ “stagecoach” was awarded the Best Dec-
orated Vehicle, and the Bentley General Store took Best Novelty. In the Organization Section, Best Overall and Best Novelty went to the Bentley Firefighters Foundation. Best Decorated Float was that of the Bentley Generals, and Best Decorated Vehicle was the Sunset Hills Riding Club. The City of Red Deer captured Best Decorated Municipal Float and the City of Lacombe had Best Decorated Municipal Vehicle. Overall winner in the Antique Vehicles category and winner in the Antique Farm Machinery category was Garry Peterson’s John Deere pump engines display. Jack Siebenga again won Best Antique and Best Classic Truck with his 1946 Fargo. Ted Lightbown’s 1958 Ford won Best Antique and Best Classic Car. Wild West Willie, the huge Brahma steer owned by Doug Rogers, ridden by Kimorie Rogers this year, won Best Novelty in the Animal category. Doug was busy driving a team. Best Overall Novelty (no animals) went to the Martin’s Barber Shop entry. Dave and Judy Hueppelsheuser’s

The Sunset Hills Riding Club’s Garry Butcher, Phil Butcher, and Harvey Brink won Best Club in the Horse Section. Kathi Issler of the Bentley Firefighters Foundation won the Individual Best Western Dressed, and Matched Pairs went to Del Fox from Leslieville and his team of Fjords. The Bentley Generals mascot, Toro the Bull, was judged Best in the Pet Section. Land Solutions’ “stage-

Parade marshal JoAnn Butcher is already trying to figure out how to book a marching band for next year’s parade. She says it is increasingly hard to get bands at a price Bentley can afford during the summer, and especially on a Thursday — and Bentley’s Thursday parade is the tradition.
New format for RevMasters Bentley car show By June Norvila August 2012 was the RevMasters’ Car Club’s 15th show and this year the format for the Bentley Kroozin’ West Show & Shine was different. The Top Twelve were picked, meaning there were no specific class winners and no judges were needed. “Most shows have gone to this format,” stated organizer Rick Park. Out of 107 entries, down from last year perhaps because there were two other car shows on the same weekend in central Alberta. Chosen Best In Show by the hosting committee was the 1957 Chev 210 wagon of Frances Evans from Altario, who was one of the Top Twelve. Other Top Twelve winners included the 1940 Willys Jeep of Barry Cunningham of Bentley, the 1968 Ford Mustang of Kent Vanlderstine of Cochrane, Roger Sherba from Rocky Mountain House’s 1978 Ford Ranger XLT, John Schafer from Rimbey’s 1958 Half Ton step side, Red Deer’s Wendy Park Ramage 1948 Chev, Lacombe’s Lloyd & Kathy Goetz 1938 Ford Tudor, Red Deer’s Dana O’Connor 1927 Ford Model T touring, as well as Calvin Traub’s 1967 Ford Mustang GT 500 from Calgary, Randy Prediger’s 1967 Firebird from Sylvan Lake, Leona & Devin Swainson’s 1950 Mark V Jaguar from Red Deer, and the 1970 Chev CST of Bill Bailey from Red Deer. People’s Choice went to Bentley’s Dan Johnson’s 1969 Plymouth Road Runner.

Both these entrants were from Bentley. The contestant who came from the furthest away was Billie Mahony from North Battleford with his 2011 Camaro SS. Club organizers also co-ordinated the Saturday night fireworks which cost $5,300. Many donors, including the Bentley Ag Society and the RevMasters Car Club themselves, donated towards the fireworks fund to put on a show for all to enjoy. There were lots of loyal volunteers, committee members, fans, and participants that helped make the event so great. From the profit this year the club plans to donate to Ronald McDonald House in Red Deer, to the Bentley Community Church blessing pantry, and will again put some funding aside for next years fireworks.

Farmers’ market, focus of international interest Submitted Two women from Holland visited as part of their Nuffield Agricultural Scholarship. Djuke VVdmaat attended the market in early July and found the vibrancy of the park and the friendliness of the people extraordinary. VVdmaat commented that one of the selling points of the Rimbey market was the lack of repetition by the vendors. And Djuke is no stranger to markets. She has an apple and kiwi orchard in the Netherlands and her trading companies sells $1.2 million of “sustainable” apples each year. She has been visiting markets around the globe and said Rimbey’s Farmers’ Market was the best she had experienced worldwide. Merlijn Albering, also from Holland, worked the market under the direction of Sonja Stalder, an experienced producer and vendor. “The farmers market in Alberta is how they used to be in old France,” Albering said, something Holland is trying to capture and re-introduce. There, farm produce is sold at shops on the farm. There are really no farmers’ markets and produce that is sold in city stalls is not accompanied by the farmer. Albering travelled to Rimbey via Toronto where she studied vegetable production in the Golden Horseshoe. Her project “city fields” develops local, sustainable agriculture that is complementary or often driven by urban food
policy. Albering owns a garden shop and is preparing four acres of vegetables. As for the Rimbey Farmers’ Market, she loved it. Both women were visiting fellow Nuffield Agricultural Scholar Brenda Schoepp of Rimbey. Schoepp’s study topic is the development of mentorship programs for women in agriculture. She will travel to 16 countries in the next year and a half, promoting mentorship and looking at production, business and human capacity building models. The goal is for women to empower women to grow food, protect environments, strengthen trade and secure financial independence for themselves, their families and their communities. Like VVdmaat and Albering, it is women who produce 90 per cent of the world’s food. Country dependent, they make up between 53 and 80 per cent of the agricultural workforce. In Canada, 29 per cent of farms and ranches are owned and operated by women. “We are proud to be women in agriculture and by working and sharing ourselves we build stronger food supplies and systems to accommodate improved trade and economies.” “Rimbey” she says “should be proud of its farmers and its farmers’ market.” You can follow Schoepp’s global travels on www.brendaschoepp.com. All women in agriculture are invited to contribute to the confidential survey found on the site regarding mentorship programs for women in agriculture.

Entries up in Bentley hort show
Rimbey hort show winners
By June Norvila There were 145 entries in Bentley’s Horticulture Show this year. Horticulture convener Dorothy Sherwood noted entries were back up again, probably due to better weather before the show this year. The judge was Martha Krause of Bluffton, who Sherwood said, took lots of time to write comments and suggestions to help entrants. Major winners in the horticulture section of the Bentley Fair included: Best Dressed Whole Town Yard Award, Dale and Pam Hansen; Best Town Front Yard, Ed Spycher; Best Town Back Yard, Martin Schneider. The judge’s choice Best Flower(s) of Show was a spray of lilies entered by Dell Collins from Lacombe. Best Rose also belonged to Collins. Marjorie Dubuc from Lacombe won many awards as well as earning the Grand Aggregate rosette. She won Floral Table Centrepiece (second was Britney Swanson from Eckville), Theme Floral Arrangement, Tribute to Farmer’s Market Basket Arrangement (second was Penny Seiling from Bentley), and Tribute to the Rodeo Basket Arrangement (Penny Seiling was second). Ken Jensen from Lacombe had the Best Rhubarb. Sherwood was disappointed there were no junior entries this year. “We would like to try a juvenile section next year like some of the other (bench exhibits) have,” she noted, explaining anyone over the age of 12 has to compete in the open adult category the way it is right now. “Maybe that would help,” she says as she already starts looking forward to next year.

Horticultural judge steps down after decades By Amelia Naismith After 40 years of judging, one horticultural expert is laying down her clipboard and letting the next generation step up. “I’m getting too old, I’m 84,” said Mary Burrows, a past chair and now retired judge of the Rimbey and District Horticultural Group. In the late 1960s Burrows attended training sessions for judging at Olds College. One of the training instructors travelled to Drayton Valley, where Burrows was living at the time, looking for new judges and she jumped at the opportunity. “I used to write a column for the paper in Drayton Valley called Green Thumbs,” said Burrows. Burrows grew up in England where she picked up her love of gardening from her father. “I love it. I breathe, eat and drink it.” When Burrows moved to Canada she found it difficult to get a garden started here because of the short growing season. In England she farmed year-round. Throughout her career Burrows has judged in more then 25 different places, including Kalispell, Mont., where she helped judge the Pacific Western Dahlia National show. “They invited some judges from Alberta to go down and help,” said Burrows. “It was quite an adventure.” Burrows was one of two Albertan judges to be invited to Montana; Iantha Goodfellow was the other. Burrows and Goodfellow are currently the only two horticultural judges in Alberta who have all their specialties. Montana isn’t the only adventure Burrows has had in her lifetime. In 1964 she joined the Drayton Valley Flying Club and was a pilot for 28 years. Burrows started taking a navigation course with the club but everything in the navigation course was also in the pilot course so she decided to take the pilot course instead. Burrows’ husband was also a pilot. “We just did it for our business and for recreation,” said Burrows.
After 40 years of judging horticultural shows Mary Burrows is retiring as one of Rimbey and District Horticultural Group’s judges. Photo by Amelia Naismith Burrows is also involved in the third printing of a rhubarb recipe book called Treasures of the Rhubarb Patch. “We printed a lot of books in ’97 and we’ve had to print two times since then.” Along with the recipe book the Rimbey and District Horticultural Group holds a Rhubarb Days fundraiser once a year that Burrows has actively been a part of. Although she’s not longer judging Burrows isn’t leaving the group altogether and she isn’t leaving them without other judges. Burrows has trained many apprentices in her years, including the groups president, Gail Hood. “I kind of apprenticed under her. She’s a good teacher,” said Hood. In the late 1990s and early 2000s Burrows was the president of the group for four years and on the executive board for six, so she knows what information Hood would need, and according to Burrows there’s so much of it Hood still calls her for tips sometimes.

TURNBULL MONTEITH Virgil Ray Monteith of Red Deer, Alberta, formerly of Rimbey, passed away quietly at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at the age of 81 years. Virgil was born in Red Deer to Jack and Venice Monteith on March 13, 1931, the second youngest of four children. He was raised in various communities around Central Alberta. Virgil had fond memories of the farm at Crystal Springs and the Rimbey area, which he considered home. He was united in marriage to Margaret Philip on September 16, 1950, and they had seven children. Virgil was a jack-of-all-trades and worked as a heavy equipment operator, carpenter, boiler hand, a cat skinner building ice roads, just to name a few, but above all else, he was an avid horseman and lover of the land. During the last few years, Virgil resided in Red Deer to be close to his children. Virgil leaves to mourn his loving children: Jackie Cross, Pam McDonagh, and Cathey Monteith, all of Red Deer; Brett Monteith and Wade Monteith, both of Blackfalds; and his son-in-law, Calvin Dahms of Rimbey. He is also survived by his sister, Gay Grundy of Rimbey; as well as thirteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law. Virgil was predeceased by Margaret; his parents, Jack and Venice; his children, Rick Monteith and Raye Dahms; his grandson, Terence Cross; sons-in-law, Allan Cross and Brian McDonagh; siblings, Viley Nikirk and Clifford Monteith; sisters-in-law, Judeth Monteith and Jackie Philip; and brothers-in-law, Ken Carson, Harold Nikirk, Bill Grundy, and Gordon Philip. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Virgil’s Life was held at the Rimbey United Church, Rimbey on Friday, August 24, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. with Shealagh McClelland, DM officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Virgil’s Memory may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, 10531 Kingsway Avenue Edmonton, Alberta T5H 4K1. John S (Jack), 80, of Bentley, quietly slipped away at the Bentley Care Centre. Third of four boys, he was born at home on the east side of Gull Lake September 1, 1931 to John and Christina Turnbull. He lived all of his life in the Bentley area. A plumber and gas fitter by trade, his true love was farming. He loved sports and as a young man enjoyed playing ball. As the children were born, he became involved in coaching and watching sports. As his health deteriorated, he was content to watch sports on T.V. and go to as many of the Bentley Generals games as he could. Over the last few years, Dad resided in the wonderful care of those at the Bethany Care Centre in Sylvan Lake and spent his last few months in the Bentley Care Centre where he was teased, treasured and coddled (which he loved). He is survived by son Perry (Nancy) Turnbull of Missouri, daughter Deanna Turnbull of Leslieville and daughter Jean (Len) Landry of Bentley as well as their mom Cecile (Jim) Carroll. He leaves 9 grandchildren, Brett (Alison) Landry, Lindsay (Don) Morrison, Brady Landry (Alyssa Batten), Cody Turnbull (Jessica VanDyke), Corey (Katie) Turnbull, Blaine Turnbull, Layne Turnbull, Travis Turnbull (Kasey Loch) and Tara Turnbull, and five great grandchildren, Tasia, Mireya and Jasmine Landry, Macy and Jevin Morrison. Jack is also survived by his brothers Tom (Sandy) Turnbull of Bentley, Duncan Turnbull of Red Deer, sister in-law Joyce Turnbull and many nieces and nephews. We also wish to acknowledge his very devoted and valued friends Laverne and Janice Anderson. Dad was predeceased by his son Shane and his brother David. The family of John Turnbull would sincerely welcome your attendance at a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. on September 1, 2012 at the Bentley Cemetery followed by a lunch at the home of Len and Jean Landry, 5421-49 Street, Bentley. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Bentley Care Centre. Condolences may be made through www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca Wilson’s Funeral Chapel & Crematorium

Bluffton Bulldogs fight to the finish Submitted story After winning provincials the Bluffton Bulldogs U18 Fastball team travelled to Winnipeg, Man. to represent Alberta at the Western Canadian Championships. The Bulldogs first game was against the Cross Lake Juniors (Manitoba 1). Bluffton was in tough against this team, losing 7 -4 when starting pitcher Logan Loomer suffered a shoulder injury in the fourth inning. Cody Domoney was forced to enter the game cold with only five warm up pitches. Bluffton gave up 11 runs in the next two innings to lose 18-4. Tyler Loomer was the MVP. Next was Saskatchewan 2 Ochapowace Thunder. In this game Bluffton hit four home runs but played rather lackluster defense behind Domoney’s pitching and went on to lose 9-8. Domoney’s two homeruns and good pitching gave him the MVP over Chad Lifton’s two homeruns. Thursday night brought the British Columbia 1 team Richmond Mariners. This was the Bulldogs’ third game of the day, at 9 p.m. and the Mariners’ first game of the tournament. With Logan still hurting, Domoney pitched again. The Bulldogs did not get the start they needed and were down 3-0 after one inning. Bluffton blanked the B.C. team the next three innings while scoring three runs but a tired Bulldogs team gave up
two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to lose 8-4. Bluffton really played well considering they had been on the ball diamond just about continually since noon, with three games and opening ceremonies. Mackenzie Stout was the MVP for this game. The Friday morning game was against the Manitoba Mustangs and this game was started by Chaddy Giroux, a pick up from Gift Lake. Bluffton had the offensive game they were looking for and won 14-1. Loomer picked up his second MVP award. Friday afternoon’s game was the River City Redmen. This team is a tournament team that travels to the US to play. Logan Loomer started this game, sore shoulder and all. Bluffton started well, scoring once in the first. Loomer nursed this one-run lead until the fourth inning when the Redmen tied it up. Domoney came on to pitch the rest of the game and gave up only one run on a lead-off error in the fifth. This 2-1 loss essentially knocked the Bulldogs out of the playoffs. Chad Schenk won the MVP. Even with the Bulldogs knowing they were out of the playoffs they played with pride against Saturday morning’s opponent, the Saskatoon Selects. Domoney got the start and the Selects scored four runs in the first four innings with the Bulldogs replying with
Back row: Coach Blair Stout, assistant coach Laverne Steeves, Chad Lifton, Cody Domoney, Logan Steeves, Mackenzie Stout, assistant coach Kevin Steeves and assistant coach Mike Steeves. Middle row: Colton Loomer, Carsen Blackhurst, Chaddy Giroux and Wyatt Tennant. Front row: Chad Schenk, Tyler Loomer, Luc Prins and Jeff Hargrove. Submitted photo only two of their own. The Bulldogs lived up to their name and scored five in the fifth with Saskatoon fighting back with two, making the score 7-6 Bluffton. The Bulldogs scored one in the sixth with the Selects scoring two to tie the game. Bluffton would not give up and scored four in the seventh, unfortunately poor defense allowed Saskatoon to score five in the seventh, handing Bluffton the loss. Colten Loomer was the MVP. Bluffton did not achieve their goal of winning a medal but they lost
their games against the eventual gold and silver medal winners by one run. Bluffton can hold their heads high knowing that their pitchers were 15- and 16-year-olds pitching in a U18 tournament. The future of this team looks bright for 2013. The Bluffton Bulldogs thank the sponsors that helped get them to Winnipeg.
