Raab wrestles with heart By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Ponoka has been put on the international wrestling map by Kelsey Raab, who has just returned from Baku, Azerbaijan. She competed at the Cadet World Championships with teammates from across Canada. This was the first competition for Raab where she competed with wrestlers from around the globe. This gave her experience into different styles of wrestling she had not seen before. “Some of them (moves) were pretty funky, but they were effective,” explained Raab. Fourteen girls competed for gold in the freestyle women’s 70 kg category and Raab was unsure how far forward she would be able to go. She won her first match against a wrestler from Turkey, lost her second match to Sweden and her third match to an American wrestler and was Kelsey Raab

Despite not making it to the finals, Raab appeared proud of her accomplishment. “For my first (international) competition I wasn’t even expecting to get that far.” A world ranking of seventh for her “doesn’t even feel real.” It did however give Raab a chance to realize it was the competitor’s moves she was worried about and focused on instead of her own. “I think that’s what happened to me in my second match,” she explained. She plans to take lessons from the world championships and apply it to her wrestling after a short break. “I’m taking a bit of a break from wrestling, I’ll probably take two weeks, but I’m still training. I’m still keeping in shape because that was my downfall last year after Pan Ams, I got in such good condition and then I did nothing,” she said. Raab referred to the Pan American Cadet Championships last year where she won silver. The flight to Baku is a story in itself as the plane lost cabin pressure somewhere between the Saskatchewan and Manitoba border. Pilots had to make an emergency landing in Winnipeg until the issue could be sorted out and the plane could fly to Toronto. “We sat in the plane for two hours,” she stated. This meant missing her connecting flight to London, England and also her connecting flight to Baku, but one of the coaches stayed behind and they arrived a day later than the rest. Relief was all Raab could think of when she arrived. “I could finally focus on wrestling.” The wrestling season starts in November when Raab plans to enter junior tournaments, which is university level wrestling as well as competing for nationals. “I want to start the season off strong.” She feels competing at the university level will be another building block for her experience.

Former Ponoka Mountie charged A former Ponoka Mountie is expected in Wetaskiwin provincial court on Sept. 13 for election and plea, after being charged with assault. Const. Ronald Craig Lavallee, has been charged with one count of common assault following a public complaint received by the detachment, which alleged excessive force was used during an arrest in Hobbema, where he is now stationed. The complaint was reviewed by senior personnel in RCMP “K” Division criminal operations branch. The investigation was then forwarded to a senior Crown prosecutor at Alberta Justice and Solicitor General, who subsequently recommended this charge. “Having had oversight of the investigational process in this case,” said Superintendent Curtis Zablocki, district officer in charge of central Alberta

The impaired driving charged was laid when a “highly agitated” Weir was arrested after he ran into a horse trailer being pulled by another vehicle near Eckville in April 2009. A small amount of cocaine and a crack pipe was found inside his vehicle. Defence lawyer Lorne Goddard said at the time of the offences Weir was struggling with a cocaine addiction. Goddard suggested a two-year sentence. After charges were laid, Weir took bad advice and fled to British Columbia where he found a job managing a company’s office in Merritt, said his lawyer. He did that for 18 months before turning himself into police there earlier this year after RCMP from Alberta reached him on his cellphone. Goddard said after leaving Alberta, the married father-of-three turned his life around. Judge Gordon Deck gave Weir credit for time served in jail leaving him with 27 months left to serve in prison.

A con man who bilked a string of central Alberta companies out of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and supplies has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison. Nathan Weir, 34, pleaded guilty in Red Deer provincial court Aug. 24 to about a dozen fraud and stolen property charges as well impaired driving and nine counts of failing to appear. Crown prosecutor Maurice Collard described Weir as a professional con artist who scammed small businesses in several Central Alberta communities including Red Deer, Rimbey, Ponoka and Sundre between December 2008 and July 2010. Some were out thousands of dollars worth of equipment, including one that was bilked out of nearly $11,000 worth of material. Collard called for a three-year sentence, noting that Weir had been sentenced to two years in 2004 for a smaller number of the same kinds of frauds. “He can’t stop stealing from Central Alberta,” he said. Library raises funds for breast cancer research By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Bookworms with a hankering for sweet treats were able to feed their sweet tooth and donate to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) Aug. 23 at the Ponoka Jubilee Library. It was organized by summer reading co-ordinator Jenica Kostiuk who was inspired by an ad asking would-be cooks to raise funds for breast cancer using a program called Cook for the Cure. It encourages people to host a dinner party or other food events and raise money at the same time. The decision to host came mid-July. “We all pitched in and we all brought our own special dishes,” explained Kostiuk. Library staff baked their favourite cookies, including maple sandwich cookies; marshmallow squares with ribbon icing, chocolate chip cookies, and several gluten free selections. One of the goals for Kostiuk was to raise $1,000 and “to raise awareness that people like me can be affected.” She signed up with the program and had an organizer from CBCF assist with putting on the fundraiser who gives support on how to advertise the event and

supply information packets and ribbons. Library manager Norma-Jean Colquhoun was glad to help out. “I’m glad that she (Kostiuk) took the initiative.” It took hours of baking to bring the tantalizing desserts to the table as well as bring pink punch to stay with the theme. Library clerk Janice Baron had high hopes for the fundraiser. Her daughter baked the treats, including the pink-ribboned marshmallow squares. “I’m hoping we raise lots of money. I’ve had friends and family affected by breast cancer,” explained Baron. An online donation account was set up by Kostiuk for those who were unable to attend the fundraiser, the link is available at the Ponoka Jubilee Library website at: http://ponokalibrary.prl. ab.ca/. Online donations close Aug. 29. According to CBCF the Cook for the Cure program has raised more than $2.1 million since its 2002 start in Canada. The estimate is that 22,700 Canadian women and 200 Canadian men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. The fundraiser made $900 over the course of the day.

Opinion Alberta Party’s crisis of its own making Alberta’s namesake party is facing an existential crisis. Just two years after its formation, the nascent Alberta Party is losing its leader after an electoral shutout in April. And now party operatives are pondering whether, at its annual general membership meeting on Sept. 22, it should soldier on, disband or turn itself into a think tank focused on progressive ideas. With a stillborn performance like this, it must feel like the Social Credit of the centre-left: irrelevant, largely ignored and not an organization anyone would construe as a future contender. The contrast couldn’t be more vivid between the Alberta Party and another recent rookie movement — the Wildrose Alliance, a fiscally conservative/socially libertarian party which, under the leadership of Danielle Smith, came within a hair’s breadth of winning that same provincial election. It wasn’t that the Alberta Party lacked leadership. Former Hinton mayor Glenn Taylor had an amiable image and a grassroots political presence. It also had “brand” on its side. Naming your party after the province appears to have populist potential — after all, it worked in Saskatchewan, where the right-wing Saskatchewan Party overcame the baggage associated with the previous corruption-tainted Progressive Conservative Party, and rode to electoral success. Actually, the Alberta Party has the literal name but the Wildrose name might actually come closer to capturing the essence of the province. But it was something else that failed to impress voters. Perhaps it was the contrived sense of entitlement — that this party somehow had a vision of a better way, without clearly enunciating what the better way would look like. Better governance? Greater accountability? I think we’ve all heard these lines before. Note to policy wonks: Show us the money. I think it may have had something to do with

haste. It’s no secret that some of the forces behind Doug Firby the Alberta Party also had Troy Media their hands in the election Guest Columnist of the progressive and popular Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. There was a sense that the surprising come-from-nowhere success in that campaign could be simply escalated to the provincial level. Instead, party politics at the provincial and federal levels are both more complex and more deeply entrenched. Histories are longer, policies more completely evolved and traditions more deeply bound. The Wildrose succeeded as well as it did (and, to be clear, that party’s greatest hour may yet come) because it had simple and clear policy positions and even claimed to be the rightful heirs to Alberta’s conservative tradition. Compare that advanced state to the other new kids on the block. What traditions are the Alberta Party rooted in? A few years ago, I was part of a group in Alberta that considered founding a new political party based on fiscal conservatism and environmental stewardship. We invited Preston Manning, the closest thing in Canada to a political wise man, to one of our meetings, seeking insights from his early days of the Reform movement. The advice he delivered then could easily apply to the Alberta Party establishment today. Preston’s advice was to take time and get your ideas in place as a social movement before even considering an entrance into the political arena. Your ideas are what will be how the public measure your group’s value as a movement; launching such a movement before those ideas are fully formed will ultimately doom the cause to failure. In simpler terms, there’s no point in having sizzle if there’s no steak. Our little group never got beyond the idea stage, but the concept of environmentally-friendly

conservatism has found its way into the public discourse. That is in part a credit to Manning, who has emerged as a leader in the fiscally conservative/ environmentally responsible ethic. Manning’s advice on getting the values right first is what the Alberta Party should have received, but apparently did not. Perhaps the best thing for the Alberta Party to do at this moment is to take a step back, and get the horse back in front of the cart. No matter how catchy the name, no one will

vote for a party that doesn’t have its elevator pitch polished to a high shine. If you can’t say in a few words what you stand for, you’ll never connect with the people whose support you need. There’s no shortcut to spending a few years in church basements and community halls getting up close and personal with the province whose name you aspire to wear. Doug Firby is editor in chief and national affairs columnist for Troy Media.

A picture holds a thousand comforting memories In a lot of ways, I suppose I’m a traditional-minded person. Or maybe I’m just an old person in a teenaged body. I love drinking warm milk and curling up with a book. I enjoy the feeling of a sparkling clean house. Planting a garden feels like an Olympic gold medal to me, even as my grandfather laughs at the crooked rows I’ve planted. I’m probably sounding a bit like your grandmother. I’m sounding a lot like mine, that’s for sure. But above all, my old-fashioned guilty pleasure is photo albums. Gas Meter Upgrades

Dear Editor: Regarding Mark Milke’s guest column, “Airports the new train stations,” — maybe for a select portion of the population who can afford to fly anywhere. The biggest reason I found fault with that article is because of its rather conservative perspective

objecting to how much trains are subsidized. Yet, after reading this article, I opened my mail to see in an AMA pamphlet that stated “Every year collisions cost our society $5 billion. Aren’t our roadways a form of “government handout” also? Evone Monteith

Giving zeros to students a last resort at STAR Catholic There has been controversy about whether students should get a zero for not completing an assignment. For the record, STAR Catholic Schools does not have a division policy on this question. As trustees, we have confidence that the principals and teachers in each of our schools know what’s best for individual students and will act accordingly. This means a student may receive a zero if warranted. However, giving a zero to a student is considered a last resort at STAR Catholic Schools because we

know other approaches often work much better. There is little question the threat of getting a zero can be a motivator in getting an assignment completed on time. However, for some students, research has shown it is not the best approach in helping students be successful learners. All students thrive in an environment where they are given instruction, feedback and help throughout the learning process. This includes helping students overcome whatever might be preventing them from participating in class, doing

homework, studying for exams or getting assignments done on time. This “zero as a last resort” philosophy reflects our inclusive approach to education that welcomes all types of learners. Inclusive education means accommodating a wide variety of learning styles, abilities and skills. We know that working with students to improve performance within a flexible, loving, caring Maria Lentz Christ-centred environment pays far more dividends than restrictive, one size fits all policies. That’s why we give our schools and teachers the freedom to make decisions about giving zeros to students. Telling students what they are expected to learn and then giving constant support to improve their performance before they are tested works. The positive results of this approach are evident as shown by the achievement of our students, and expressed through the satisfaction of our parents and the commitment of our staff. If you would like to know more about STAR Catholic Schools philosophy regarding our grading approach or have any questions, please contact Curt Baron curt.baron@starcatholic.ab.ca the principal of St. Augustine School. Recognize ADHD in children Some kids can’t wait to get back to school, where they can continue their studies and spend time with their friends. Others, though, might not look forward to new schoolwork, and that might be because of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. ADHD is a common condition in which children experience problems with paying attention or concentrating. Parents who suspect their children have difficulty paying attention or concentrating can look for certain warning signs or symptoms of ADHD. Symptoms are grouped into three categories: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Inattention will often not be noticeable until a child enters a school environment. Hyperactivity symptoms can manifest themselves rather early and are almost always present before a child reaches his or her seventh birthday. Impulsivity can lead to accidents, be it knocking objects over or banging into people. Impulsive children may also engage in dangerous activities without considering the consequences.

Servus offers scholarships The Servus Young & Free Scholarship program is now accepting applications. In its third year, the program will award $1,000 scholarships to 30 students attending a post-secondary institution in Alberta this fall. “The Servus Young & Free Scholarship program is designed to help Alberta post-secondary students who demonstrate a passion and commitment to making a difference in their community,” said Gail StepanikKeber, chief marketing officer with Servus Credit Union. Servus’ Young & Free Scholarship program differs from other scholarship programs in that it places less emphasis on academic achievement and more on the applicant’s vision for the future. To apply, students must • Be 17 to 25 years of age • Live in Alberta • Have (or open) an account at Servus Credit Union • Be enroled at a post-secondary institution in Alberta for the 2012–2013 school year • Submit a 90-second or less video or 300– to 500word essay describing how their most influential mentor has inspired them to make a difference in the world • Have achieved a minimum 70 per cent average in their last academic year Applications are being accepted online at www. youngfreealberta.com. The deadline to apply is noon, Sept. 24. Scholarship applicants are also eligible for the People’s Choice Bonus contest. From Sept. 27 to Oct. 15, the public can vote for their favourite scholarship applicant at www.youngfreealberta.com. The three applicants with the most votes will each win an iPad. Scholarship recipients and People’s Choice Bonus contest winners will be announced Nov. 1.

Jake & the Kid comes to life in Ponoka Submitted Conni Massing has come a long way from her Ponoka roots — she now lives in Edmonton and is one of Canada’s prominent playwrights — but she certainly hasn’t forgotten those roots. Massing is thrilled to have Klaglahachie Fine Arts (KFA) producing her stage version of W.O. Mitchell’s classic Jake & The Kid. First seen in MacLean’s magazine in the 1940s, continuing as radio plays in the 1950s, as published short stories in the ’60s and again in the ’80s and as a TV series with Ponoka’s Shaun Johnston playing Jake in the ’90s, W.O. Mitchell’s Jake and The Kid has occasionally been seen on stage, but seldom as powerfully as the version KFA is presenting. “Conni has collaborated with the late Mr. Mitchell to bring us this wonderful play based on, at its core, the story The Day Jake Made Her Rain. She has also included elements of several of the other stories as well as some new material, to craft a script that is perhaps as enjoyable as any I have had the privilege to work on over the years,” says director Danny Lineham. “From the incredibly rich characters to their issues, problems, hopes

and dreams, Mitchell and Massing have painted a picture almost all of us can understand and identify with,” Lineham added. Those colourful characters are cast from community actors in and around Ponoka. “Being new to the area,” says Lineham, “I wasn’t sure what to expect. However I don’t think I could have found a much better cast. From experienced performers to total newcomers, they are giving me a full palette to work with, letting us present a town filled with the interesting and unique characters created by W. O. Mitchell back in the ’40s.” Jake & The Kid plays Sept.7, Sept. 8 and the following weekend, Sept. 14 and Sept. 15 at the Ponoka United Church. An old-fashioned prairie picnic dinner is available before the show, if desired. Dinner is at 6 p.m., with the show at 7:30 p.m. Dinner and theatre tickets available by phone, email, mail, or in person from Klaglahachie Fine Arts, 5020 – 52 Avenue, Ponoka, (403) 783-4087, klaglahachie@gmail.com. Show only tickets, with a 7:30 p.m. curtain, are available from KFA and at Hamilton’s IGA, Ponoka Book Store or from Siding 14 Gallery of Art and Fine Craft.

Similarly, grain prices are excellent, leading to anticipation that this could be a banner year for our industry.” FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2012 “This is great news RIMBEY, ALBERTA for Alberta, because our research shows that for every $1 a grain farmer earns, almost $14 is put back into the economy as the grain makes its way through the provincial value chain,” said Jacobson. According to provincial calculations, Alberta farmers contributed a record $10.5 billion to the economy in 2011, with the food and beverage processing industry generating $12.2 billion in economic activity in the same year. These two sectors combined created 73,200 jobs for Albertans. Quilting retreat offers camaraderie By Amelia Naismith

Merchant Veronica Longmuir shows off her wares to the sewers. She was one of four vendors at the retreat. Photo by Amelia Naismith

FIRST CHOICE REALTY (PONOKA) LTD.

Ponoka’s annual quilting retreat attracted 63 women, ranging from beginners to master sewers, from across British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan for four days of quilting. “Some of them are new, some have never been to a retreat before, said host Kathleen Mennell. The retreat started at 7:30 a.m. each morning from Aug. 13 to 16 and the sewers would work on individual projects until 10:30 at night at the Ponoka Legion. There were two show and tell nights where the sewers were able to show up to three projects and

tell their stories. “You get everything form very basic sewing to very elaborate quilts, said Mennell. “There’s a real diversity of project ideas and it becomes your family after a while. Home economist Veronica Longmuir, who’s also the owner of Veronica’s Sewing Supplies, travelled from Kindersley, Sask. to show her wares. Longmuir has been running her store for 33 years and it’s the longest running single proprietor store in Canada. She was one of four vendors and according to her and Mennell, it’s an achievement to have all four at the retreat in Ponoka. ‘This is a huge retreat. The food is excellent. I really like Ponoka people, said Longmuir. Continued on page 15

Quilting brings people together Continued from page 14. Before she had her store, Longmuir was a home ec teacher. “I had a great home ec teacher, she inspired me. When she retired she needed something new. “And then I thought it’d be great to have a store. Some sewers at the retreat have been sewing and quilting most of their lives, such as Lois Nysetvold, while others, like Darlene Pfahl started much later. Nysetvold started sewing when she was 11 years old. She once took her sewing machine in to be serviced and saw an embroidery machine. Form there her love of embroidery grew. “I embroider. I quilt because I love to embroider. Nysetvold has two sons whose shirts she embroidered over and over again. She eventually needed something else to do. “I’m not typical of the people here. Nysetvold lives near Lloydminster and a mutual friend helped introduce her to Mennell. It normally takes Nysetvold three months to finish a project but more elaborate ones can take up to a year. “It’s not like a job. I do it for fun. Pfahl took sewing in school until Grade 12 but it wasn’t until she retired from her Grade 2 teaching job that she got into quilting. “I had some home ec friends and I said I’ve always wanted

to quilt. They helped Pfahl cut the pieces and she did the sewing. Without their help, Pfahl says she wouldn’t have been able to do it. “But then I was hooked. Pfahl likes making lap quilts better than the full-sized ones, like her first quilt. “It’s smaller and knowing myself I’d get it done. Pfahl likes quilting because it can be a social hobby. Mennell believes it can also be a charitable one. Mennell created a wall hanging for the Slave Lake Fire Department. From it they were able to make postcard replicas and other items to sell. The wall hanging represented the flames, the forest that burned, the animals, houses and businesses that were lost and a helicopter that went down with a man inside. Despite the social aspects and tips and greetings flying across the room, the retreat can be hard on the sewers’ bodies. Many wore supports to save their shoulders and backs, and a registered massage therapist was on site to give half-hour massages. Quilting and sewing can also be hard on the wallet. Four women who attended the retreat each had a machine that cost $1,000. One also brought 600 spools of thread with her.

More than 800 barrel racers in Ponoka for ABRA finals By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye More than 800 competitors searched for the best arc in Ponoka last weekend to compete at the Alberta Barrel Racing Association (ABRA) finals. It was a first both for the ABRA who usually host finals in Camrose, and for the Calnash Ag Event Centre, the largest event they have put on yet. “We had a lot of stuff we had to do to get ready for it,” said Chas Lambert, general manager. Organizers worked with the Ponoka Stampede Association to ensure there was land for competitors to park their trailers — as the ag centre grounds were overflowing — they prepared 80 extra stalls for the barn, and brought in extra tractor equipment to rake the barrel run. “Our goal is to see this size of an event on a regular basis,” said Lambert. Some competitors took some time to talk about what barrel racing means for them. With 20 to 25 years of barrel racing experience, Theresa Giesbrecht of Rimbey, it’s about the speed. The faster, the better as a best time is determined by hundredths of a second. She could not contain her excitement as her horse, Kuzi, helped bring her a fast time at 18.031 in the second round. “What I’m just tickled about is this horse here has taken a whole second off.” With some racers completing a run at 17.235 seconds, one second is a big deal. She enjoyed competing against other woman at the ABRA finals as “it’s a good gauge if you’re looking to rodeo.” Part of it is working with her horse, when she gets energetic enough that her horse feels it. Another racer, Lisa Zachoda of Okotoks, came away second in the high point, with 85.5 points. Her fastest time was 17.331 seconds riding Dynamite Perfection. She has been racing for the last 15 years. “I like the competing, it gives you something to strive for,” said Zachoda. It comes from one thing. “First of all, I love horses.”

Her dream has always been to compete at a high level and despite being one of the fastest riders, Zachoda is surprised when she does well. Riding four to five days a week appears to help keep her ready, and staying fit comes from taking care of her horse, she explained. “It’s more of a total body workout.” It is not only turns a rider needs to be skilled at. “You still have to have very fast horses, it’s so competitive,” said Zachoda, who is thankful for the opportunity to race. “We’re fortunate to be able to even do it.” Here are the top three Open High Point results: • First, Rene LeClercq from Holden, riding Preppies

There are many ways for us to stay in shape At the age of 69 and sporting an average weight, I do not indulge in any vigorous exercise programs anymore, but I do a lot of walking, enjoy socializing and bowling, and try to eat healthy for the most part. Of course, it is important for all age groups to stay as active as possible, as well as to enjoy healthful lifestyles, but then again, there are lots of alternatives where all of us can have some fun keeping in shape. Yoga and something called Zumba have now become extremely popular activities to encourage both a healthy mind and body, but I know that I Mike Rainone couldn’t concentrate that long, I can’t get down Hammertime that low anymore — and I really don’t look very good in tights. While browsing the Internet this week I found some different, but simple and free daily exercise and weight loss tips which just might give all of us a chance to enjoy feeling good about ourselves. We hope it helps, but please check with your doctor before you try these new 21st century workouts. •They actually now have weighted hula hoops, which weigh three to five pounds, and are perfect for working out Shawna S. Not only can we become a master at ballet, jazz, tap, modern flamingo, ballroom dancing, polka, ballroom, Irish clogging, and belly dancing, we may even find enough energy to dance the night as well as a few pounds away. •Instead of just standing in front of the mirror when brushing our teeth or hair, why not do a few quickie two-minute exercises such as squats, lunges, or wall-sits? If we are home by ourselves one can take the boredom out of housework by dancing or singing around the house, doing a jig with your vacuum, and laughing at yourself, but not too loud, just in case the neighbours are watching. •Walking the dog can also be a great daily exercise, and if the weather is bad, just chase the little duffer around the house with his favourite toy. MEND promotes healthy lifestyle for Ponokans Submitted Ponoka Neighborhood Place Association will offer two MEND fitness and lifestyle programs to central Alberta residents starting in September. Ponoka was the first rural community in Canada to offer a pilot program on these worldwide healthy lifestyles programs that have achieved unparalleled success in England, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. More than 55,000 families around the world have participated in these programs with more than 90 per cent of the families involved showing sustainable change to a healthier lifestyle. The programs are free to all participants; a parent/caregiver must attend each session MEND 2 - 4 is a healthy lifestyle, family obesity prevention and treatment program aimed at families with young children aged two to four years. MEND 2-4 was developed as a result of strong and increasingly frequent expressions of interest for an effective initiative from healthcare and childcare practitioners. MEND 2-4 uses parenting skills and behaviour change techniques to help young children and their families adopt healthy eating habits and become more active. MEND 2 - 4 uses play-based learning plus behavioural and parenting skills training (Mind) to help families become physically active (Exercise) and make informed food choices (Nutrition). It’s all based within a practical, fun and supportive philosophy of inspiring and motivating change (Do it!). This integrated approach provides families with a foundation for feeling fitter, healthier

Mind: Eight sessions designed to improve self-esteem and address behaviour change. These sessions will help families overcome difficulties in changing children’s habits or behaviours around eating and exercise by utilising tools such as goal and reward-setting, modelling and triggers. Exercise: Eighteen sessions of fun activities and group play help build up strength and fitness. These activities are graded, structured and non-competitive so that everyone can join in and benefit. Nutrition: Eight sessions of stimulating group-based activities and lessons including family friendly nutrition guidelines, practical skills and demonstrations. Families are taught practical tips on shopping, cooking, label reading, fats and sugars and how to survive eating out and other tempting occasions. Do it! The fundamental ethos behind the Program is about learning how to make changes and putting them into action. ‘Do it’ stands for having a go and getting involved in the Mind, Nutrition and Exercise activities. This program starts Sept. 24 and will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the United Church, 5020 52 Ave. with graduation ceremonies on Nov. 28. Students learn hockey tips with Black Elk camp By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Kids with T-shirts and shorts could be seen last week heading into the arena carrying hockey equipment. The reason: the Black Elk Hockey camp was in full swing at the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex. Young boys and girls had almost an entire week to stretch unused muscles and hone their hockey skills. Through a series of intense classes, attendees learned power skating and hockey skills. Dryland training also continued throughout the week with soccer, ball hockey, and for chalk talk that kept kids thinking about the game. For some parents

it meant their kids were active and learning about all aspects of the sport. “I keep coming back for the schedule. They keep kids busy all day long, and for the instructors,” said Tammy Glague, mother of two from Clive. That and her kids enjoy returning each year because they enjoy it. “I want them to have the skills, but I want them to have fun.” She feels the value comes in how Black Elk presents its classes as well as some of the additional clinics they offer such as defense, shooting and checking. Returning for a second year was BobbyJo Hekob, of Cranbrook, B.C. She uses the camp as a chance to visit family and friends and for what her child gets out of it. “We chose this camp for the value. The bang for your buck,” explained Hekob. She was unaware of any other camps that offer eight hours of instruction per day.

Director Gord Jones said their season started July 21 in Bonneyville and the camp travels from Okotoks to Fort McMurray to Grande Prairie. He feels the rapport his instructors have with the hockey students is what separates them from other camps. “That’s the key to what we do here…what sets us aside is the instruction kids receive.” “The younger the player, the more the improvement,” stated Jones. Despite attendance from areas around central Alberta, Jones’ hope is to see more kids from Ponoka take advantage of their programs. “We’d like to see more Ponoka residents.” An instructor for Black Elk for the last seven years, Andrew Owsiak looks forward to each camp they teach to see returning students and their advancements compared to last year and freedom in how he teaches. “I have a lot more freedom to work on my own

practice plans.” Fourteen-year-old Cam Shurek from Sherwood Park has been coming for the last six years. He appreciates the time back on the ice. “The best part is it prepares me for the year.” He advises putting the time and energy into classes to get the most out of what the camp offers. “Work your hardest and go into the clinics that you think will help you the most.” For Ponoka’s Samuel Neath, 11, who returned for his fourth year his hope is get better each year. “I like hockey so I like shooting and skating.” It might be tough work, but that does not stop him. “It’s pretty fun while you’re working hard.” The camp ran from Aug. 18 to 24 after which they hosted a bantam/midget 3 on 3 camp from Aug. 24 to 27.

Stampeders prepare for upcoming season By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye After closing last season with a 4-34 record, some fans have been wondering if the junior B Ponoka Stampeders would continue this season. A website “under construction” since the end of last season has not helped matters, but team president Ken Kinley said the team has already started practicing for the upcoming season. The Stampeders had their summer camp Aug. 25 and 26 at the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex. Coaches worked with players to prepare them for the season. The goal is to bring in as many local players as possible, explained Kinley. Despite a slow start, he hopes for a strong season. “I’d like to see us in the .500 club this year,” he said. “We’re just going to have to play hockey and give 100 per cent every game.” The coaching team comprises head coach Nick Jones, assistant coach Da-

vid Parent and manager Andrew Walker. Parent and Walker used to play with the Stampeders and Kinley feels the three have strong rapport with the players. “We’re just giving them full reigns…we want to let them go with it.” With summer months coming to a close and their main camp planned for September, the board of directors has worked to get advertising going as well as recruiting new players, and Kinley was grateful to residents of Ponoka. “I think the community support is very good.” He was also thankful to business sponsors that have been with the Stampeders since they started. One challenge the club faces is recruiting in the summer, because players are away or working. Plans for the team’s website are underway and Kinley said it will work in conjunction with the Heritage Junior B website. According to the Heritage Junior Hockey website, regular season play begins Sept. 21.

Girls minor hockey joins with Lacombe Submitted Girls’ minor hockey in Ponoka writes a new chapter to its story as it joins forces with Lacombe Minor Hockey. Coaching director Sharon Klinger said the main goal is to have girls playing at every level without a large age difference in players. “It’s better to play at the same age group.” Initial meetings started as early as last winter with Lacoka Female Hockey being born from it. The idea is not new as Lacombe and Ponoka used to have a midget girls’ team, explained Klinger. “We’re trying to do it with the whole girls’ program…we don’t want to leave anybody behind,” she stated. Twenty-three girls from novice to midget levels blew the dust off their gear and started conditioning for the 2012-

2013 season Aug. 14 at the Lacombe Sports and Leisure Complex. Skating and dryland training were taught during the camp. Late registration deadline for Lacombe is Aug. 28 in the west upper lobby of the Lacombe arena and registration for Ponoka is Sept. 5 at the Kinsmen Community Centre from 5 to 8 p.m. A used equipment table will be on hand. “We wondered what issues there were for holding kids back and equipment is a large issue, so they have an equipment table,” she said. First time registration for minor hockey is free, explained Klinger, who looks forward to what this season will bring for girls’ hockey. “I’m sure we’re going to have some bumps along the way…but the seeds have been planted.”

Over 150 contestants will be competing!

Reflections of Ponoka Remembering Ponoka’s small town heroes By Mike Rainone for the News For as long as I can remember I always got a real thrill out of watching, cheering for, and maybe even getting to meet or play with some of our many exciting and colorful small town heroes of the past. Later, as a member of the local newspaper staff, I have been lucky enough to be able to follow and write about these great teams and individuals as they have proudly represented our town and county in countless activities. To salute their efforts, we will strive to continue to feature them on the Reflections and Remember When page every week in the Ponoka News. We really appreciate the ongoing contributions of our readers, and we thank you for the great photos and story ideas that have encouraged us to keep this feature section going for many years. These photos are from the Ponoka News files and the Ponoka Composite High School Quill and Shield yearbook. One of Ponoka’s finest swimmers Keith Ferguson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ferguson, was an active member of the Ponoka Swim Club, and in the summer of 1960 earned the opportunity to compete in the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association provincial finals. During a weekend meet bringing together the best swimmers from Alberta and Saskatchewan, the young Ponoka teenager captured the William Wrigley Trophies for finishing first in both the junior men’s half-mile freestyle and the men’s open mile swim races. In the half-mile swim, Ferguson broke the Alberta/Saskatchewan provincial record by seven seconds, and at the halfway point of the mile dash he was under the previous record by eight seconds. What was really remarkable about these great efforts was the fact that the tall young Ponoka swimmer had only been competing competitively for two years. Our gentleman barber and fine horseman Diminutive Monte Klein was well known around Ponoka for several decades as a congenial barber but in his spare time he was also an extremely gifted horseman. Along with wife Anne and son Mervin, Monte was also active in community activities but never missed the opportunity to dress in his finest and ride his magnificent steeds in Ponoka Stampede parades and countless other events

Keith Ferguson

In the summer of 1960 Monte entered his two fine horses in the Central Alberta Light Horse Show in Lacombe, and came home with the major haul of trophies and ribbons shown in the photo. His three-year-old stallion Alberta Red Genius took top honours in the American Saddle Class, Championship American Saddle Class, and in the Gents Bridle Path Hack, as well as a second prize in the glamour section. Later, Monte and yearling filly Dixie Rose captured first place in both the pony class and Championship of the Ponies, as well as a second in the quarter horse yearling section. This popular long-time resident of our community continued to show his horses, as well as give a pretty fair $1 haircut for several decades, The great Broncs sporting tradition Visitors need only to wander down the busy halls of the Ponoka Composite High School to get a glimpse of the countless banners, trophies, and team pictures that represent the many decades of participation and success for all facets of their ongoing sports program. Whether it is football, track and field, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, curling or wrestling, the young students have always carried on the proud tradition of being tough competitors and great sports, win or lose. Margie Griffiths Margie Isabell Griffiths passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Edmonton on August 20, 2012 at the age of 86 years. Margie was born on March 22, 1926 to Julius and Edith Cerveny on the Cerveny homestead 2Ω miles west of Ponoka. She attended school along with her brother Elmer at the Sharphead School. She often told her children of the joyful times they had at school. The children in those country schools got to be like one big family. In June, 1944, she married Leon Edwin Griffiths of the Concord district southeast of Ponoka. To this union four children were born: Dwight, Darlene, Terry and Colleen. Leon, Margie and family lived on the Griffiths farm for eight years. They then lived and farmed on the Cerveny farm for three years. They then bought the Neil Randles’ farm in the Concord district where they lived until they retired and moved to Ponoka in 1993. Margie enjoyed her garden, flowers and fruit trees. She always did a lot of canning and freezing. She also helped Leon with the outside work when needed. Margie’s family was her pride and joy. She was always happy when the weekends came and they would all come home to celebrate special occasions. Margie was auntie and grandma to many children in the district. They often gathered there. In the summer it was motorcycles and in the winter ski-doos. She always had cookies and a hot drink for them. She didn’t seem to mind the wet clothes in the dryer as they prepared to go out again. Margie always said she treated everyone as she liked to be treated. She was always a friendly person. She enjoyed being with people and would lend a helping hand whenever she could. Leon and Margie went on many trips with their friends. They were fun times. In later years they spent time at their winter home in Yuma, Arizona. After Leon passed away Margie sold the house in Ponoka and moved into Slater Place. Because of ill health she later moved to Rimoka Lodge. She made wonderful friends and was happy to take the ladies to appointments, shopping or just for an afternoon drive. She was very happy here and always said the staff treated everyone so well. Margie believed in and loved the Lord, often saying how because of our dear Saviour, she was helped through trying times. She believed God does answer prayers. Margie was a member of the Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School at the Concord Baptist Church. Later she attended First Baptist Church in Ponoka. She was a member of the Concord Ladies Group and the Concord Mission Circle. Margie was predeceased by her husband Leon in 1996, her mother Edith in 1976, her father Julius in 1963, her brother Elmer in 1994 and her grandson Robert in 2007. She leaves to mourn her passing her children: Dwight (Linda), Darlene (Pepi), Terry (Charlene) and Colleen; eight grandchildren, eleven greatgrandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; as well as sisters and brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, and many friends. A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Ponoka. Interment followed in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta or the Alzheimer Society of Alberta. Wallace (Wally) Sauter Wallace (Wally) Sauter, beloved husband of 63 years to wife, Frieda, went home to be with the Lord, on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at the age of 85 years. Wallace also leaves to cherish his memory his two daughters, Gloria (Don) Wacowich of Ponoka and Gail (Bob) Boschee of Calgary; five grandchildren, Quinton Billey, Quadelle (Glen) Rose, Jolene (Kelly) Wiens, Kevin (Nicole) Boschee and Michelle (Curtis) Janzen; and 9 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Emerson and Zachary Rose, Hananiah, Emmanuel and Yeshua Wiens, and Lincoln, Easton and Delaney Janzen; and his sister-in-law Hilda Sauter. Wallace was predeceased by his mother and father, Dorothy and Gotfried Sauter, and all of his siblings, Alfred (Susan) Sauter, Hilda Sauter, Erna (Art) Boschee and Fred Sauter, and his son-in-law, Albert Billey. Born in Irvine, Alberta on October 20, 1926, the youngest in his family, Wallace spent his first 2 years on the family homestead near the Cypress Hills, in the Thelma area. His family moved further north close to Irvine near the Berry Centre School, which Wallace attended and where he also met his future wife, Frieda Lehr. At the young age of 16, after his father’s passing, Wallace took over the family farm. Five years later, he married Frieda on December 11, 1948. They ran a mixed farm but Wallace’s love was working with the cattle and horses. Wallace and Frieda moved into Medicine Hat in 1980 and sold the farm in 1984. In 1997, they made the big decision to relocate to Ponoka. He enjoyed his new home near the park and his new friends in the community. He valued his membership in Ponoka’s Lutheran Church as he did in his previous churches in Irvine and Medicine Hat. Wallace had a passion for people as was obvious by his very chatty and hospitable nature. He took great interest in the lives of his family and friends but also loved to see how people in the rest of the world lived. He enjoyed his trips to Barbados, Hawaii, Europe, the Orient and Australia among others. But he equally enjoyed his numerous trips to Elkwater Lake and especially to the mountains. Going camping with the trailer was one of his greatest joys. In his younger years, Wallace also enjoyed curling and bowling. Rodeos were always one of his passions and he made a point of attending the Ponoka parades, rodeos and pancake breakfasts every year including this year. Attending gospel and country music concerts were also one of his greatest joys. In his final months, as he bravely battled his illness, he was so grateful to the excellent care he received from Dr. Halse, Dr. Chan and the wonderful nursing staff at the Ponoka General Hospital. Wallace’s family and friends were the love of his life and he will be deeply missed by all. Friends wishing to pay their respects to Wallace may do so at the Ponoka Funeral Home on Thursday, August 30, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. or at Trinity Lutheran Church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 p.m. led by Pastor Tim Graff with the Interment Service following at the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Diabetes Association. To express condolences to Wallace’s family, please visit www.womboldfuneralhomes.com. PUBLIC NOTICE AMENDING LAND USE BYLAW NO. 013-97 Ponoka Town Council has received a request to amend Land Use Bylaw No. 013-97 as follows: To reclassify 7.71 acres lying within Block A, Plan 802 0630 from Commercial Expansion (CX) District to Highway Commercial (C2) District.

Angler John Witvoet got the surprise of a lifetime recently when the 20-pound northern pike he reeled in at Gull Lake contained a small duck. The fowl was undigested and quite recognizable. The pike was 42 inches long, 19 inches in circumference and seven inches wide across the back. Submitted photos

Outlined area to be reclassified from Commercial Expansion (CX) District to Highway Commercial (C2) District.

Nominate Ponoka’s best businesses By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Another year has passed for the Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce and it is time to recognize its members for their work in the community. Presentation of the 2012 annual business awards is Oct. 26 and the deadline for nominations is Sept. 21. Categories remain the same and the chamber has kept its Customer Service Person of the Year category, with nominations open to the public. Awards chairperson Inger Laing enjoys seeing businesses showcased. “I always look forward to it. It’s nice to recognize different businesses.” This year’s theme is Putting on the Glitz with the hope attendees will dress the part for the awards ceremony. The best place to start with customer service nominations is to consider the actions of the employees, Laing explained. “If they feel somebody does outstanding service… then that would be a good place to start, and the same with the businesses,” she said. She feels events such as the chamber awards can help draw in other businesses to the community and she suggests it might be something for the chamber to consider by opening up votes for more categories. “The more people you involve the more it kind of gains momentum,” she stated. Laing looks forward to the presentations to the winning businesses. “The presentations are what stand out the most. It’s nice to see who wins and why.” She suggests people should get their nominations in as soon as possible. And the categories are: Business of the Year: • Small business: Presented to a business that consistently demonstrates a commitment to excellence, shows growth and profitability and acts as a role model for other businesses. • Medium business: Presented to a business that con-

sistently demonstrates a commitment to excellence, shows growth and profitability and acts as a role model for other small businesses. • Large business: Presented to a business that consistently demonstrates a commitment to excellence, shows growth and profitability and acts as a role model for other business and has had an active involvement in the community. Industrial Business of the Year: • Presented to an industrial business carrying on business in manufacturing, oilfield services, production and/or industrial services and who consistently demonstrates a commitment to excellence, shows growth and profitability, acts as a role model for other industrial businesses and has an active role in the industrial sector. Businessperson of the Year: • A Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce businessperson who has demonstrated innovation, vision and business growth. This person will be active in the community and in the development in Ponoka and district. Agricultural Business of the Year: • Presented to an agriculture business that consistently demonstrates a commitment to excellence, shows profitability, acts as a role model for other agricultural businesses and has an active role in the agricultural sector. Customer Service Person of the Year: • Presented to an individual who consistently provides outstanding customer service. Demonstrating responsiveness, efficiency, professionalism, innovation and conflict resolution. This award will be determined by a public vote. Any employee of a chamber member is eligible. Non-profit Business of the Year: • A non-profit registered society that is actively involved and has demonstrated effects to better the Ponoka and district community.
