ESSENTIAL SERVICE levels maintained at government offices in Nanaimo. BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN

B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union workers across the province will hold a one day strike Wednesday (Sept. 5) to try and get provincial negotiators back to the bargaining table. BCGEU president Darryl Walker said he issued a strike notice to the B.C. Public Service Agency and Labour Relations Board on Wednesday, which means 153 communities and 1,785 government work sites across the province will be affected. Darlene Thorburn, staff representative for BCGEU in Nanaimo, said picket lines will be up at all Nanaimo government BCGEU work sites, but essential services will continue at varying levels. “The most essential services will be maintained, so children and family, social development and corrections, things like that will be pretty close to 100 per cent of service,” said Thorburn. “The liquor stores, which aren’t essential service, will be 100 per cent out and everything in between will have varying levels of service.” An estimated 700 Nanaimo BCGEU workers will participate in the strike, which is expected to last for one day during regular business hours. BCGEU members work in corrections and sheriff, hospital services, retail liquor stores and warehouses, government administrative and support services, environmental operations, social work, child protection and probation services. ◆ See ‘STRIKE’ /6

LABOUR DAY: Community support becomes a major goal of today’s unions BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN

W

hat we want for ourselves, we want for all. That mantra is the underlying philosophy of a labour union, and on Labour Day in Nanaimo, that philosophy rings as true as ever. While unions aim to ensure workers at any level can operate in a safe, rewarding environment, unions and their members also instill that belief

in organizations and committees outside the workplace in an effort to ensure that all community members have an opportunity to experience a decent quality of life. Nanaimo’s union roots date back to Samuel Myers, a coal miner who fought for worker rights in the late 1800s and eventually formed the city’s first coal mining union. Today, through the rise of fishing and forestry industries and, later, trades and teachers’ unions among

others, labour is finding new ways to make communities stronger. “We’re always trying to find ways to make sure people are better off,” said Bob Smits, administrator for the Nanaimo and Duncan District Labour Council. “We’re part of the community too. What we wish for ourselves we wish for everybody else so we wish everybody had a decent job that pays union wages but if they don’t, we still try to help.” ◆ See ‘SUPPORT’ /7

Inbrief Money earmarked for trades, repairs city scene

Burning couch proves trouble An abandoned couch turned out to be a hot item in north Nanaimo last weekend. Firefighters responded shortly before midnight Friday to a couch on fire, which was burning next to a dumpster on Glen Eagle Crescent. “Someone had put a couch outside the dumpster and then someone lit the couch on fire,” said Rick Kwasnecha, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer. In spite of a liberal dousing of water and a thorough overhaul of the furniture item, firefighters had to pay it a second visit at about 2 a.m. Saturday after it reignited. The second snuffing put an end to any possibility of re-ignition.

Help needed locating items Police hope the public can help track down two items stolen recently in Nanaimo. An orange and silver Eco Bike City 45 electric bike worth $600 was stolen from the 300 block of Hillside Avenue in Nanaimo sometime overnight on Sunday. The bike was outside charging, when the owner discovered it stolen the following morning. Kiwanis Village seniors housing complex in Nanaimo reported a 46-inch Samsung TV was stolen from the residents’ lounge sometime over the weekend. Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

GOVERNMENT GRANT of $3.4 million given to Nanaimo university. BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

The handymen at Vancouver Island University are going to be busy this year repairing roofs, elevators and upgrading the fire alarm system thanks to $3.4 million in capital infrastructure funding from the provincial government. The Ministry of Advance Education made the announcement Wednesday. It also announced a one-time funding allocation of $600,000 for short-term training opportunities, which VIU is directing toward trades. Steve Beasley, executive director of the VIU Students’ Union, said the funding announcement is disingenuous because the money being awarded is only part of the funding the university has had

clawed back over the years. “It’s a vanity project for the Minister of Advanced Education,” said Beasley. He said the move is creative accounting and a way for the government to take credit for standard repair costs that should have been addressed through the university’s annual capital allowance. He said the new process adds more administration and costs more money and is an “inefficient and ridiculous process.” Ralph Nilson, president of Vancouver Island University, said the university used to receive more than $2 million each year in its annual capital allowance, but it received $500,000 this year. He said the new model means that universities must create a proposal identifying priorities and apply to a central pot of money, which the government then doles out. Nilson said the university received a little bit more money than it usually would have through the annual capital allow-

ance funding. “We’re very pleased to receive this funding,” said Nilson. The infrastructure money will be used to repair and replace roofs, upgrade ventilation systems in trades’ buildings where expanded welding programs will occur to ensure safety and maintain elevators. The entire university’s fire alar m system will also be upgraded. Nilson said the system is antiquated and the university wants to ensure it’s up to date in case of an incident. Nilson said budgets are tight and the university has been required to do some belt tighten-

ing because the funding received by government hasn’t kept up costs to run the university. The $600,000 for trades programs will allow the university to add an additional three months of training to the welder program to make students more versatile for work in the industry; support the culinary arts second year diploma program to incorporate management skills and allow students to complete their apprenticeship; and develop a power engineering program. The power engineering program will train students how to run large industrial boilers. Fred MacDonald, dean of trades and applied technology for VIU, said workers with this type of training are in high demand for jobs in pulp mills and hospital boiler rooms and there is demand for workers in northern B.C. MacDonald said half the training programs that will benefit from the $600,000 in funding have already started. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Gasoline helps ignite house fire

TWO MEN replacing vehicle filter suffer injuries. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

Three people escaped serious injury after a gasoline fire destroyed two vehicles and caused major damage to a duplex in north Nanaimo Wednesday. The blaze erupted in the 4700 block of Fairbrook Crescent shortly after 1 p.m. when two men were changing a fuel filter under the back of a car parked the duplex’s garage. Al Jovine, the vehicle’s owner, said a small bucket of gasoline, that dripped from the vehicle’s fuel line during the filter swap, ignited when the bulb in a trouble light they used to illuminate the work shattered. “The trouble light blew and the sparks started the fire,” Jovine said.

Dennis Trefiak, a resident of the home, was working under the car when the fuel ignited. “He came out of there on fire,” said Jovine, who dragged his friend out from under the vehicle, threw him to the ground and proceeded to roll Trefiak on the ground and also rolled on top of him with his own body to snuff out the flames. T re f i a k w a s t a ke n t o Nanaimo Regional General Hospital to be treated for burns. “He got burned on his arms and a little bit on his face, but he’ll be all right,” Jovine said. Jovine suffered scrapes on his knees and elbows during his effort to save his friend. The front of the duplex was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, but Trefiak’s wife Donna, two dogs and a guinea pig had already gotten out of the house safely. Jovine’s car, a vintage Mercedes Benz, and a Chevrolet minivan were also destroyed in the fire.

The Trefiaks did not have fire insurance. Neighbours said a man, woman and two children living in the adjoining duplex suite are currently away on vacation in India. Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said the fuel ignited when it dripped onto the trouble light’s hot incandescent bulb, shattering it and causing the sparks to come in contact with the gasoline vapours. With the garage door open, the flames quickly spread, igniting the vinyl siding of the building. “It’s an accidental fire and (Trefiak) is a veteran mechanic,” Mond said. Mond is warning mechanics to stop using trouble lights with incandescent bulbs and instead use LED lamps or other cool light sources that are safer to use around flammable substances. Trefiak has been released from hospital and is recovering from his burns. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Resignations lead to cabinet shuffle

PREMIER PLANS to announce new ministers. BY TOM FLETCHER BLACK PRESS

Shuswap MLA George Abbott confirmed he is following his fellow B.C. Liberal leadership contender Kevin Falcon into political retirement. Chilliwack MLA John Les also announced Thursday that he will not run in the 2013 election, and Children and Family Development Minister Mary McNeil released a statement saying she has made the same decision. Falcon, the three-term MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale, resigned as finance minister Wednesday. Premier Christy Clark said all MLAs have been asked to declare their intentions by the end of the summer, and she will unveil a cabinet shuffle next week. Abbott said he expects to be dropped from cabinet as the B.C. Liberal election team is assembled, but he plans to continue to work on the election platform

as he serves out his fourth term as MLA. With a total of 33 years in elected office at the local and provincial level, and at age 59, Abbott said he will not be making any comebacks in the future. Abbott served as health and aboriginal relations minister and is currently education minister. McNeil, elected MLA for Vancouver-False Creek in 2009, was appointed to the children’s ministry by Clark last year. Les issued a statement from his constituency office, saying it was a difficult decision to leave a political career that started as a Chilliwack councillor in 1983 and four terms as a B.C. Liberal MLA. A former public safety minister, Les has most recently served as parliamentary secretary to the premier. “I trust I have been able to represent the people of Chilliwack well and hope they will forgive any shortcomings on my part,” Les said. Falcon, Les and McNeil have all confirmed they will serve out their current terms until the election, set for May 2013.

Premier Christy Clark issued a statement praising all three retiring MLAs. Commenting on Falcon’s decision Wednesday, Clark downplayed the departures and said the turnover offers a chance for renewal. NDP leader Adrian Dix contrasted the departure of former leadership candidates Abbott and Falcon with his team, where his leadership rivals Mike Farnworth and John Horgan are staying on along with former leader Carole James. Dix agreed with Abbott’s assessment that Clark is a great campaigner, but

added that doesn’t change the fact that the main government initiative since the 2009 election is the rejected harmonized sales tax. “What B.C. needs is a better government, not a better campaigner,” Dix said. Other B.C. Liberals who have announced they are not running again include Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger; Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Harry Bloy; VancouverFairview MLA Kash Heed; Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave Hayer; Saanich North MLA Murray Coell; and Penticton MLA Bill Barisoff. Former cabinet ministers Barry Penner and Iain Black resigned their seats last year and have been replaced by NDP MLAs in a pair of by-elections. Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen quit the B.C. Liberal Party in March and joined the B.C. Conservatives. NDP MLAs Dawn Black (New Westminster) and Mike Sather (Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows) have announced they are retiring next year, and Dix said there may be more. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Committee criticizes clerk pay NDP MLAs used the first public meeting of the legislative management committee to call for former clerk of the house George MacMinn to be removed from his $240,000-a-year consulting job. MacMinn stepped down last year after 54 years as a legislative clerk, the longest term in Commonwealth history. He served as chief clerk from 1993 until last year. NDP house leader John Horgan said the succession took place with-

out consulting the official opposition, and was “orchestrated” by MacMinn to include the consulting arrangement that extended his salary and benefits for two years. He said public accounts show he was paid $250,000 plus $22,000 in travel expenses last year. B.C. Liberal members of the committee agreed to review MacMinn’s position, once a report is prepared on his duties. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Youth log volunteer hours Study shows young adults more likely to help out than older colleagues BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Balancing act Mike Besler of Segway Victoria, left, guides Kelly Alexander, visiting from Quesnel, B.C., as she tries a Segway for the first time. The company demonstrated the machines in Bowen Park Aug. 24 to raise money for Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank.

Red Serge dinner raises money Tickets are on sale for one of the most popular events in Nanaimo’s social calendar. Nanaimo Red Serge Dinner is set for Sept. 30 at the Coast Bastion Inn in support of the Canadian Cancer Society and Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. Hosted by Nanaimo RCMP Supt. Norm McPhail, guests enjoy a buffet dinner with riders on the 2012 Tour de Rock. Tickets are $60, or

$450 for a table of eight. Tickets are available at the Canadian Cancer Society’s Nanaimo office, the Inn on Long Lake and Coast Capital credit union on Aulds Road. The Tour de Rock begins Sept. 22 and wraps up Oct. 5 in Victoria, visiting 27 communities along the way. For more information, or to donate, please visit www.copsforcancerbc. ca.

Youth are making a difference in the City of Nanaimo one volunteer hour at a time. Young adults are more likely to volunteer compared to their older colleagues, with a rate of 58 per cent and an average of 130 hours, according to Statistics Canada’s Canadian Social Trends April 2012 report. Some school districts require students to complete community service as a prerequisite for graduation. However, only seven per cent of volunteers aged 15 and older reported that they had performed this type of required community service in 2010. However, volunteers 65 and older, who have a lower rate of 36 per cent, dedicate

more time with an average of 223 hours. “It’s a win, win for everyone,” said Stacey Brown, youth leadership coordinator for the City of Nanaimo, about youth volunteerism. She said organizers get eager volunteers to help out during events and youth gain valuable skills and positive self-esteem building opportunities. “I’ve seen it having a very positive impact on the volunteers as well as the people the volunteers work with,” she said. This year 110 youth were enrolled in the QUEST and Leaders in Training program offered through parks, recreation and culture. The numbers have remained about the same the past two years, but over the past 10 years there was a steady increase, said Brown. This year, some youth dedicated more than 350 hours of volunteer time and others are in the 200-300 hour range. “The youth I’ve worked with this summer is absolutely amazing, their dedication is outstanding,” said Brown. “They work with people in the community

and give back to their community.” Risa Convey, program coordinator for the Nanaimo branch of Youth Volunteer Corps, said sometimes organizations are hesitant to give responsibilities to teens because it is their first time working in a professional environment. However, the experience helps teens gain valuable skills they can use to find employment. Youth Volunteer Corps operates out of Volunteer Nanaimo. This year, 11 youth registered in the program, with an average of 11-18 youth the past few years. The corps doesn’t require a minimum commitment of time and is flexible to allow youth the opportunity to choose their own times, said Convey. Youth volunteers face the same barriers to dedicating more of their time as other volunteers, which include not enough time, the inability to make a longterm commitment, gave too much time already and did not know how to become involved. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

He also said he will not run in the next provincial election. In July, BCGEU sent a message to the province it was not happy with a government offer by rotating strikes in Victoria, Kamloops and Vancouver. Walker said BCGEU is asking for a wage increase of 3.5-per cent in the first year and a cost of living increase in the second year for workers, who have been without a contract since March 31. The government countered with a two per cent offer in the first year and 1.5 per cent in the second year, but withdrew the offer and has not returned to the bargaining table. “We are striking for a fair and reasonable agreement and to support BCGEU members’ wage proposal, but the government is not listening, said Walker in a release, adding that the union has not gone on strike in 20 years. “We have not taken the decision to strike lightly. We have no choice but to send a clear message on Sept. 5 that there can be no more falling behind for government workers.

Support extends to community

CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN

More than 700 students were expected to attend this year’s event.

Timberlands diverts connector traffic

Traffic is being diverted away from the industrial road between Highway 19 and Northwest Bay Road in Nanoose Bay. Since early August, Island Timberlands has been using a security firm to keep drivers off of the logging road between their office off of the highway south of Parksville, and their log sort near the Beachcomber marina. The road has been used as a connector between the highway and residential areas off of Northwest Bay Road for years. However, illegal dumping of garbage and land access issues have been problematic for Island Timberlands, said Morgan Kennak, manager of sustainable timberlands and community affairs. The road is an industrial route, she said, adding that many drivers are not giving the right-ofway to logging trucks, creating a safety hazard. While the road itself is not gated, security trucks periodically monitor the route and will ask drivers to turn around. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

◆ From /1 As government gaming grants have been cut back over the past few years, local unions are taking it upon themselves more often to pick up where former funding left off. In March, in an effort to not only strengthen itself but its surrounding community, Vancouver Island University CUPE Local 1858 members brought their spouses and children out to the first annual CUPE Cares cleanup, which saw tons of garbage removed from Nanaimo River and Harewood Mines roads, as well as neighbouring communities around the university. “Anytime we can help each other through various volunteering opportunities and engagements we try and do that,” said Deborah Hopper, acting president for CUPE Local 1858. “Our members put in hundreds, probably thousands of volunteer hours, every year. Some of it is through the union itself and some of it is through other community organizations that they belong to.” The NDDLC, however, has been exceptionally active in recent years in reaching out to the community to help during tough times. It has had extensive involvement with the United Way Central Vancouver Island chapter, has worked with Loaves and Fishes Community Foodbank and Nanaimo Foodshare to help feed the hungry, has supported the Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society, and, perhaps most notably, has endorsed the Nanaimo Youth Services Association’s Bladerunner program, which takes youth facing challenges and sets them on a course to become contributing tax paying members of society. “If (Labour) did not support us, if they did not believe that that is the construct for the model and the reason why we do it, then we wouldn’t qualify for the funding and we wouldn’t be able to offer the program,” said Steve Arnett, chief executive director of Nanaimo Youth Services Association. “We’d have no credibility.” Instead, over the past three years, 724 youths between the ages of 15 and 30 have achieved several trades certifications and have continued on to be assets to the companies for which they work. Bladerunners success expanded from Ladysmith to Comox, the Sunshine Coast and other parts of B.C. “Labour endorses the certifications, and we work closely with labour coun-

cils in other areas,” said Arnett. “The result is safe, rewarding careers for these young people who may not otherwise have had an opportunity.” While helping to provide a bright future for youth, last June NDDLC also provided food for the hungry through its Protein for People campaign. By bringing together the food bank, Nanaimo Foodshare, and PacificCARE, a child care resource and referral program, those in need were provided an opportunity to better provide for their families. “We delivered a truckload of canned salmon,” said Smits. “And we brought all of these agencies together to provide sort of a one-stop shopping opportunity for those who needed it. It’s something we’re hoping to try to do again next year.” Improving lives can also be found through individual members who choose to serve through established organizations. Nancy Curley, a labour relations worker for the BC Ferry and Marine Workers Union and school board trustee, is vice-president on the board of directors at the United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island. Five years ago, a change in her work schedule allowed her to spend more time in Nanaimo, and she chose to donate that time to the United Way. “It was important to me when I came back home to become involved in the community and the United Way was an easy way for me to do that,” said Curley, who sits on the United Way board with John Little, a steel workers union member. “Union philosophy is what we want for ourselves we want for all. I think it’s the underlying

piece of it and I think people who become part of unions believe that. So whether it’s in the work place or communities where we live it’s just by natural extension that people will get involved and do things within the community.” She added that union members can be found helping in all aspects of society, from coaches of minor sports teams to board members of charities. Signy Madden, UWCVI’s new executive director, said interests unions have in social justice are a good fit for charitable organizations. “One of the great parts of my new job has been meeting with Nancy, John Little and Ellen Oxman, the Labour Council president, to strategize how labour can even further support the United Way workplace campaigns,” said Madden. “Their interest in social justice issues is such a great fit with United Way. Many, many of our donors through workplaces are union members. We count on labour to help spread the United Way message about how donating supports the vulnerable in our community.” Arnett said the recognition and celebration of Labour Day isn’t reserved only for unions, but for the business and management side of the workplace as well. “Labour Day is the recognition of all of us as workers at whatever level we happen to be occupying at the moment,” he said. “It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come from the early days of labour law in Nanaimo when it was all about coal mining. The result is, I think, we’re all better off as a society.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

U.S. bargains can be costlyy In increasing numbers, Canadian consumers are heading south for an overnight stay and shopping to take advantage of new cross-border allowances and the high dollar. Cross-border trips in June, the first month the higher exemptions took effect, were up to levels not seen since 1972. Back then, the dollar was also above par, and gas prices were low. It seems many are willing to spend the time in border CROSSlineups and pay for the BORDER extra gas to save on a shopping variety of items. takes a toll on The downside is that businesses, retailers take a hit, and when they do, they cut back taxpayers. on costs – such as new hires. And those much-hated taxes (which pay for health, education and other important programs) take a hit, as well. Also, business owners play major roles in sponsoring local activities and initiatives, such as youth sports teams and charitable causes. As revenues decline, so does the ability of businesses to give back to the community. Retailers in border communities are particularly impacted, but many B.C. businesses feel the effect. Canadians are understandably looking for bargains. But there is a point when the lure of cheaper U.S. products comes back to haunt them. A long-term decline in retail jobs and declining tax revenue can do major damage to the B.C. economy. Tax shortfalls must be made up somewhere, so that means everyone (including crossborder shoppers) will pay more. The federal government encouraged this flow of dollars to the south, with the cross-border allowance changes. Now it’s incumbent upon the same government to address factors such as high import tariffs that impede the competitiveness of many Canadian business.

Market a valuable asset

Media not supplying facts to electorate To the Editor, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon resigns and the B.C. media starts the propaganda that he is leaving because the B.C. Liberal government is a sinking ship. It forgets to mention that two Nova Scotia NDP ministers resigned for personal reasons. The premier does not blow a gasket, just has a cabinet shuffle and life goes on. Here in B.C., the media is saying that it is time for a change of government because the B.C. Liberals have been in government for 11 years. Reporters don’t mention that it is OK for Alberta keeping the Conservatives in government for 41 years, the NDP in Manitoba for 13 years, the Liberals in Ontario for 10 years, the Liberals in Quebec for nine years, and the Conservatives in Newfoundland and Labrador for nine years. How come it is always OK in other Canadian provinces but never OK in B.C.? The time has come that the B.C. media start mentioning facts for comparison purposes and using reality before propaganda remarks are made. The taxpayers have the final say on who will govern, and they should not be marking their voting ballots based on B.C. media propaganda. Joe Sawchuk Duncan

To the Editor, Re: Cost of market food too dear for shopper, Letters, Aug. 25. The Cedar Farmers’ Market is one of the Island’s premiere, long-standing markets with a community focus. In order to engage the public, it offers four special events throughout the season, as well as live music at every market. A main priority is keeping its vendors and customers happy. In order to maintain fair pricing, the managers

research market prices for produce via Internet observation and make price comparisons via local stores. The Cedar market honours Island farmers, who every week toil to bring nutritious food to the public, and in turn support the local economy by taking their market dollars and spending them locally. It also gives back to the community by contributing produce to the Nanaimo Food Share gleaning program. At the end of every market, gleaners get fresh produce

To the Editor, Re: Trio of factors behind closures, Aug. 28. It would be helpful to mention that there has, in fact, been a great restaurant open downtown called Drfitwood Bistro. Instead of dwelling on the negative aspects of our downtown core, which may inhibit people from venturing downtown for dinner, you should be promoting the positive aspects. Not only is there definitely not a culinary void downtown, as reporter Toby Gorman irresponsibly mentioned, but there are some amazing restaurants in the area. Restaurants such as the mentioned Driftwood Bistro as well as Aladdin’s, the Thirsty Camel, the Firehouse Grill, Sukkho Thai, the Nest Bistro, La Famaglia and Asteras. Natasha Kruse Nanaimo

Genetically modified food far from safe To the Editor, Re: Nutritional evidence lacking, Letters, Aug. 28. Recently, thanks to a lawsuit, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released 44,000 internal e-mails on the subject of genetically modified food. Simulated disaster too real for Alberta To the Editor, Western Canada Spill Services recently conducted a mandatory ‘mock oil spill training’ for all area oil companies on the Beatton River, near Fort St. John, B.C. The company initially intended to use red-dyed canola oil to simulate the oil, but had to change to colourful plastic balls because Alberta complained about the canola floating down the Beatton into Alberta. This, from the same province and industry that is growing one of the greatest environmental disasters of all time and is trying to sell us on the Northern Gateway pipeline which would carry the real stuff and that is almost certain to have a spill at some point – likely sooner rather than later, given the dangerous route. Volunteer for life

Levena Bebault, a retired CIBC employee, left, presents $500 for the Silent Guardian Fund to Joan Ryan, executive director of Nanaimo Lifeline. The money, from the CIBC Retirees Ambassador Program, acknowledges Bebault’s more than 600 hours of volunteer time to Lifeline over the last 12 years.

Nanaimo Community Hospice has reached the halfway mark in its $900,000 Expand the Heart of Hospice fundraising campaign. The $1.25 million project will provide Hospice with double the space and room to grow into the future. “We are extremely grateful to the community for helping us reach the halfway mark,” said Wendy Pratt, Hospice executive director. “We still have a ways to go, and in the months to come will be looking to service clubs, businesses and individuals to help us achieve our final goal. Your gift will be a lasting contribution to the health

Once in its new home Hospice plans to expand its child and youth program and add a much-needed adult palliative day program. “There are still gaps in services in our community when it comes to end-of-life care,” said Pratt. “And we know that with a bigger space we can meet some of those needs.” Donations can be made at www.nanaimohospice.com, in person at Hospice House, 1729 Boundary Ave., or by calling 250-758-8857.

Doctors present facts on arthritis

Arthritis is often perceived as an older person’s disease, but the ailment impacts people as young as two years old. During September’s Arthritis Awareness Month, people have the opportunity to learn more about arthritis and how it affects people’s heath, workforce productivity and its impact on the healthcare system during a free public forum Sept. 13, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Beban Park Social Centre. During the event, people can learn about the different forms of

inflammatory arthritis including gout, rheumatoid, psoriatic and others. Although the forum is free, people must pre-register by calling 1-866-414-7766 or e-mailing re gistration@bc.arthritis.ca. The forum is led by Nanaimo’s two newest rheumatologists, Dr. Alison Kydd and Dr. Nicole Baur. The Arthritis Society’s campaign during September aims at debunking myths surrounding arthritis to reduce the impact of the disease on Canadians.

Each year the company urges every Canadians sitting down to dinner Sept. 20 to register their participation online at www. nationalfamilydinnernight.com to demonstrate the significance of getting together with family and friends. Everyone who registers is automatically entered for a chance to win $500 in M&M gift cards. The event has gained support across the country, raising more than $23.1 million for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Incidences of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis rank among the highest in the world. There is no known cause or cure, and the number of cases continues to grow. elping others and giving back to the community is second nature to Kathryn Goodyear. The 50-year-old West Shore resident, and former member of the Sidney North Saanich RCMP detachment, was a police officer for more than 30 years. After spending most of her career in Alberta, including two years in Nunavut, Goodyear retired from the RCMP in June 2011. However, she continues to work as a reserve police officer at Victoria International Airport. “I still wanted to be able to give back to the community,” she said. Her willingness to help others is why Goodyear is riding the length of Vancouver Island, raising funds for pediatric cancer research as she represents the local RCMP detachment in this year’s Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. “That’s basically what policing is, working with and working for the community.” While Goodyear has not personally been affected by cancer, a close friend dealt with the disease. In 2005, her friend’s son was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of cancer that causes the bone marrow to produce excess white blood cells. A year after recovering, in 2008, the young boy relapsed and required a bone marrow transplant. The boy’s brother stepped up. Today, the

Seeing the support available to her friend, who was a single mother, inspired Goodyear. “The fight itself with cancer is hard enough without having to worry about your employment and your mortgage and all the other stuff that goes with it,” she said. The Tour would be nothing without the support of the Island communities making an effort to raise funds for kids with cancer, she added. “Everybody buys into the fact that these kids need this help.” Goodyear recalls a trip to Camp

Goodtimes with her Tour team in mid-July. The only thing different about the summer camp for kids who have or had cancer is that there’s an oncologist on site, she said. “The kids were laughing and screaming,” she said. “If this money can put that kind of smile on their face, and (allow them to) forget about (their cancer) …” Goodyear paused, unable to find the words to continue. Gearing up for the Tour de Rock, which starts Sept. 23 in Port Alice, Goodyear said she looks forward to getting caught up in the spirit of fundraising and supporting the families she meets along the ride.

Encourage kids to be physically active When today’s parents reflect on their childhood, many likely recall seemingly endless days spent playing outdoors. But when today’s kids become tomorrow’s parents, chances are their recollections won’t recall nearly as much time spent idling the days away under the sun.

The rise in overweight or obese children is likely a byproduct of several factors, not the least of which is that many of today’s kids prefer to play a video game on the couch instead of going outdoors and being physically active. Parents know it’s not always easy to get

kids to be more physically active. But the following are a few tips parents might find useful when encouraging their kids to embrace a more active lifestyle. * Give toys that encourage physical activity. * Reduce time spent in front of the television.

Yoga moms pushing soccer moms to the sidelines Many women are trading in their team jerseys for yoga mats. The busy soccer mom has transformed into the calm and ethereal yoga mom who is more interested in a stress-free life than racing around to sports practices. For a long time the stereotypical image of a mom was a minivan-driving, white, 40-something picking up Timmy from sports practice

and Jenny from cheerleading. Her fast-paced lifestyle had her racing between kids’ engagements to home to other social obligations in a harried, time-pressed manner. But today you’re more likely to see mom practicing her asanas instead of toting clipboards and team snacks. She’s scooting around in her Toyota Prius instead of the Dodge Caravan and is more

about living in the moment than over-programming children with music lessons and enrichment classes. Today’s moms are more free-spirited and learn-asyou-go types. Todays moms are more community-based and interested in being everyone’s friends. That’s why you’re more likely to find Yoga Moms blogging, heading grassroots campaigns

School bus safety for kindergarteners A kindergartener’s first day of school is a day to cherish. There are so many firsts to experience, from wearing a backpack for the first time to making new friends to riding on a school bus. All of these firsts can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. For many youngsters, school marks the first time they are away from their parents for an extended period of time. As a result, safety concerns -- especially concerning transportation to and from school -- is foremost on the minds of many parents. School bus safety is something that should be presented to children in terms they can understand. Riding on a school bus is often a fun experience for kids, but the prospect of leaving Mom or Dad behind at the curb

can spark mixed feelings. It is best to prepare students for the school bus a few weeks prior to the first day of school to gauge their reactions and plan accordingly. Many school districts and transportation companies, like the North Penn School District Transportation Department in Pennsylvania, host annual events that help introduce kindergarteners-tobe to the school bus. Children are encouraged to enter the bus and learn about all of the equipment. The students also may be given a short ride around town, and safety information is typically included. If the school district where you are living does not host a special orientation day for children entering kindergarten, see if you can arrange to have a bus tour by

contacting a bus company in the area. Although safety tips may be covered at orientation, it is a good idea to reinforce lessons at home in preparation for the first day of school. Here are some important topics to go over. * Walk to the bus using a sidewalk if there is one. If no sidewalk is present, walk on the opposite side of the street facing oncoming traffic. * Wait for the bus at the designated stop. Don’t wander away. * Do not go into the street while waiting for the bus to arrive. * Do not roughhouse or run around with friends while waiting for the bus to arrive. * Wait for the bus a safe distance away from the street until the bus stops and

opens the door. * Walk one-by-one onto the bus. Do not push or crowd the doorway. * Once on the bus, quickly find a seat and sit down. * If there is a seatbelt, fasten it. (Children should be familiar with how to latch a seatbelt.) * Do not put your head, arms or anything else out of the bus window. * Keep the bus aisle clear of backpacks or other items. * Keep voices down so not to distract the driver. * Listen to the driver. * Do not throw things on the bus. * Unbuckle your seatbelt only when the bus has stopped at the school (or your stop at home)

MISCELLANEOUS Adults returning to school advance careers FAL LL 20 2012 2

Adults returning to school to advance careers What do you do if the economy has stalled your career prospects or left you looking for a new job? Many adults are choosing to go back to school. To attract adult students, they’re offering programs that are tailored to individuals seeking new skill sets. Other schools are expanding or just developing online degree options, which enable adults to take classes

on their own time. Online schooling is an attractive alternative because of flexible schedules and no commute times. Those interested in going back to school will have some choices to consider and steps to take. * Decide on what you want to study. * Choose the college or university. * Apply for financial aid. * Start out slowly. * Be patient.

Music can help with school skills Music’s efficacy as a teaching tool has long been studied. Though some still doubt if music has any effect on student performance, a strong body of evidence suggests otherwise. Studies into the effects of music on learning are nothing new. Such studies have been conducted for decades, gaining popularity during the 1950s when research was done on something called the “Mozart Effect.” The Mozart Effect theorizes that listening to Mozart can temporarily improve performance and may even boost a person’s IQ. Ongoing research continues to support the theory

that music education can help children on many levels. In Canada, a research group from McMaster University conducted their own study into music education. That study, which was published in the journal Brain in 2006, examined two groups of children, ages 4 to 6. Each were taught the same lessons, but one group was also given musical instruction. The study found that the group of children who received musical instruction scored much better than their peers in literacy, mathematics, IQ, and memory skills. Music education is not just for the average student. Other research shows it may

be beneficial to children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. A study completed at Stanford University showed that mastering a musical instrument improves the ability to process parts of the spoken language. The researchers believe that additional research might develop a way to use the knowledge obtained in the study to increase language development for individuals with dyslexia or cognitive disorders. In many schools, music education is being drastically reduced or eliminated. Parents may want to look outside the classroom for music instruction or play more music at home.

Nanaimoites finish Ironman

MIDGET FOOTBALL team kicks off 2012 on Monday (Sept. 3).

Four Nanaimo athletes reached the finish line at triathlon’s toughest test. Shawn Boyd, Katy Condon, Helmut Mark and Lorri Jongeneel all finished the Subaru Ironman Canada triathlon in Penticton on Sunday. The race consists of a 3.8-kilometre swim, a 180km cycling course and then a 42.2km marathon. Boyd was the first local to finish, posting a time of 10 hours, 49 minutes, 34 seconds to place 259th overall. Condon’s time was 12:50:21. Matthew Russell of Scottsdale, Ariz., won the race in 8:48:30 and the top female was Vancouver’s Gillian Clayton who finished in 9:46:07.

The Nanaimo Redmen have built their program to the point where they’re a contender every year. So for the players, the motivation is there, right from the first kickoff of the season. The city’s Vancouver Mainland Football League midget team opens the regular season on Monday (Sept. 3) with a road game against the Victoria Spartans. “We’re right where we need to be,â€? said Trent Wright, defensive back. “We’re going get wins, we’re SEASON to going to play well. PREVIEW T here’s always fine-tuning, adjustments that will go on through the whole year but [right now] we’re pretty much set.â€? Sean Roden, coach of the Redmen, said it’s easy to talk about wanting a championship, but players need to be willing to work for one. He sees the right work ethic with this year’s group. “We’ll be competitive, for sure. I think that we have a ways to go to be considered a real contender, but you never know‌â€? Roden said. “When you get a group pulling in the same direction, you can go strides in a short period of time.â€? Chae Faickney, veteran offensive lineman, said this year’s Redmen is a character group that wants to work. “We have a lot of potential on this team,â€? Faickney said. “We have a lot of young guys but they know how to play. We just need to put it together.â€? Here’s a look at the 2012 Nanaimo Redmen:

Defence

The team goes into the season with a quarterbacking tandem, as mobile veteran Jonah Wassell will share snaps with gunslinging newcomer Dylan Tucker. Payton Paladini will be counted on to lead the run game. John Evenson and Tyler Vollet will be the primary pass catchers with Wright and Robert Morris also running routes. Faickney leads the offensive line, with Alex Adams, Jaden MacLennan and Ethan Schulz other key members and Tory Martin, Christian Gonzalez and Madison Boond also contributing.

The Redmen have a tradition of a hard-nosed, run-stopping defence and that should continue into 2012 with great depth on the D line and at linebacker. Kento Takata and Tyler Wintoneak will play on the line, with Schulz seeing time there and also at LB. New linebackers Matt Vandervelde, Scott MacDonald and Alex Adams are major additions and vets Devon Carlie and Adrian Keller round out the unit. The defensive backfield is led by Wright and Morris. “Our eight guys in the box are all huge, all nutty guys that are

going to make huge stops in the backfield, Wright said. “Our DBs, we’ve got young guys but they’re all athletes, they can all make a play.

Special teams Spencer Vos is the placekicker and Schulz will handle punting. Paladini and Evenson will be the primary kick returners.

Game on The Redmen will play their home opener Sept. 9 when the Langley Stampeders visit Pioneer Park for a 3 p.m. kickoff. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Josh Burgmann and Lenn Nakatsuka, Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association all-stars, joined the Vancouver Mounties as pick-up players and helped that team to a runner-up finish at Baseball Canada’s bantam AAA championships in Vaughan, Ont. Burgmann was chosen as a game MVP for his pitching efforts in the first game of the tourney and Nakatsuka was chosen as offensive player of the game in a later contest.

Clippers close in on roster decisions

I

TEAM LOSES pair of games in pre-season.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Nanaimo Clippers’ goal scoring dried up a little bit after a fast start in the pre-season, but players will be judged on all aspects of their play. T h e c i t y ’s B . C . Hockey League team was pre paring to make roster decisions following Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to the Cowichan Valley Capitals at Frank Crane Arena. The Clips won their first pre-season game Sunday against the Alber ni Valley Bulldogs, 8-2, then lost 4-1 on the road to the Victoria Grizzlies on Tuesday. “It was a lot better effort than last night’s game,” said Trevor Fitzgerald, Clippers captain, on Wednesday. “It’s never fun coming out there and working hard and not getting some of the bounces you’re looking for… “We need to be a little stronger defensively, our power play needs to step it up a bit, and our systems, but that will all come with time.” Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach and general manager, said he was trying to get every player some ice time over the first three games, which partly explains the upand-down results. He liked his team’s effort against the Capitals – his team outshot the visitors 31-18 – and

suggested the Clips ran into a hot goalie. Jesse Neher scored Nanaimo’s goal. Now the Clippers need to make cuts, but no player is going to get cut simply because of a pre-season loss in August. “You don’t want to get too caught up in being results-based with your thoughts and feelings,” Vandekamp said. “We haven’t given the guys a tremendous amount of team structure.” So the decision-making process will be a difficult one. “As the week progresses, the players make the decisions for you a little bit with their play, but … there really isn’t a lot of separation sometimes,” Va n d e k a m p s a i d . “You’ve got to try to project where players are going to be down the road and that’s a difficult challenge.” There are other factors, as well. Nanaimo is still awaiting word on two of its players at Wester n Hockey League camps – Luke Gordon and Jackson Playfair – and the team also brought in another rookie forward on Thursday, Nick Joseph. “We’re happy with the group that’s here, but yes, we’re always looking for other upgrades,” said the GM. The Clippers played the Alber ni Valley Bulldogs on Friday after press time and close out the preseason today (Sept. 1) with a home game against the Powell River Kings.

The Clippers planned to approach the final pre-season games with more systems play. “As much as you can get it to,” Vandekamp said. “Guys aren’t going to learn the systems over night but we’ll try to add to it a little bit.” GAME ON … The Clippers and Kings play today at 2 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena.
