Kozak pleads guilty to killing three men PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

He’s called “Crazy” Kozak for good reason. In a Victoria courtroom, Darcy Kozak of Campbell River pleaded guilty to two counts of second degree murder and one count of manslaughter. He was facing three counts of first degree murder. With the guilty pleas on Thursday morning, a three-month trial was avoided in B.C. Supreme Court. The 40-year-old is in custody in Victoria and returns to court Sept. 10 for sentencing. Second degree murder carries a life sentence and Kozak pleaded guilty to two counts in the deaths of Kenneth Robinson of Nanaimo and Kenneth Allan Leask of Powell River. He also pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of Luc Dulude of Campbell River. Robinson, 45, lived on the streets of Nanaimo and went missing, along with his dog Angel, in May 2007. His badly decomposed body was discovered by hikers in a wooded area of Shawnigan Lake in August 2007. In December 2008, Dulude’s body was found in an abandoned commercial building in the Willow Point area of Campbell River. During the police investigation, RCMP described Kozak as a person of interest in connection with Dulude’s death. The investigation also revealed that Kozak had killed Leask whose body was

never found. Dulude was a career criminal who was believed to have met Kozak during a prison stint. Dulude moved to Campbell River from Kamloops in August 2008 after being released from prison following his sixth robbery conviction. Court records show that Dulude spent time behind bars almost continuously since 1987. Most of his crimes were linked to his addiction to cocaine. Kozak was also a heavy cocaine user who had an acrimonious relationship with Janice Bridges of Campbell River. She is the widow of businessman Ron Bridges who died suddenly in 2004, leaving her and their children with a multimillion-dollar inheritance. The empty building where Dulude’s body was found was owned by one of Janice Bridges’ companies. The building was later demolished and the Bridges’ oceanfront home, located less than a kilometre south of the crime scene, was thoroughly searched by police after Dulude’s body was found. The troubled relationship between Kozak and Bridges became public knowledge in June 2009 during a sentencing hearing in Campbell River provincial court. At the time, Kozak was a murder suspect, but he was in court to plead guilty to two counts of physically assaulting Bridges, Continued on Page 2

Cortes crash kills man, two pets A 78-year-old Cortes Island resident and his two dogs are dead after his car veered off the road and burst into flames on Sunday. The RCMP believe the man was travelling alone along Gorge Harbour Road when his vehicle left the road and plunged down

an embankment before catching fire. The commander of the Quadra Island RCMP detachment Corporal Shane Worth said the car was “totally engulfed in flames” when Quadra RCMP, Cortes Volunteer Fire Department and B.C. Ambu-

lance responders arrived on the scene at 2:48 p.m. The fatality is under investigation by Campbell River RCMP Traffic Services and the B.C. Coroners Service. The dead man’s name has not been released.

Thank you to all the wonderful donors, we are now able to proceed with Penny’s surgery!! The funds raised also allowed us to have the much needed dental work done on Sweet Pea, an adorable little chihuahua who is in our care. Necessary surgeries are an ongoing expense that sometimes the shelter just can’t afford, so the additional funds donated will go into our Medical Fund from which necessary surgeries such as Penny’s and Sweet Pea’s are designated. We thank our amazing donors very much, your donations will allow many animals in our care to receive the treatment that they need before they can be adopted into loving homes!!

Searchers kept busy with overdue campers and lost hikers Search and Rescue was kept busy last Wednesday. Around midnight, RCMP requested assistance to locate two people overdue from a

camping trip. The father and his 10-year-old son were planning on camping at Gooseneck Lake and returning Tuesday. Volunteer members

spent the night searching campsites and logging roads, and finally found their vehicle at daybreak by Beavertail Lake. The campers were safe and had

apparently left a message explaining the extended stay and revised location but the message was never received. Later that afternoon,

it does not provide any clue as to the nature of the emergency. In this instance two female hikers were attempting the Strathcona traverse from the Elk River trailhead to the Nyrstar Myra Falls mine site. This route is a challenging multiday hike that includes some very rugged terrain and requires some route finding.

The hikers lost the route in the Burman Lake area and had spent a day trying to find it. They were quickly located by a search team with the assistance of expert flying by Reto Glass of Westcoast helicopters. The couple were evacuated and transported to their vehicle at the trailhead.

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

BRIAN KIERAN/THE MIRROR

Carihi principal Sean Toal welcomes the high school’s first-ever class of Grade 9 students. More than 200 Grade 9s attended the first day of orientation Tuesday in the “re-configured” school district.

School is back with major changes BRIAN KIERAN

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Campbell River students returned to classes this week to find that the grades in their schools have been totally re-configured to combat ongoing dwindling enrolment. School District #72 elementary schools are now just K to 5; middle schools which used to be 7 to 9 and now 6 to 8; and Timberline and Carihi secondary schools have expanded to 9 to 12. At Carihi that means student enrolment has jumped from 750 to 925 in a year when total school district enrolment has dropped once again by about 100 students. The changes in grade distribution are designed to sustain “maximum learning outcomes” in the face of continuing enrolment declines, says Superintendent Tom Longridge. Province wide enrolment for the 2012/13

school year is estimated at 534,600 fulltime students. That’s down 6,000 in one year and is down 63,000 since 2000/01. Here in SD #72 the student population has dropped from 8,500 a decade ago to about 5,000 this year. Longridge says the process of planning reconfiguration started two years ago and has involved input from teachers, principals and the District Parents’ Advisory Council. The goal, he says, has been to “stay on the cutting edge” of innovation and creativity in the district. “We were looking at the declining enrolment in the school district. We’ve been challenged by that for a number of years and we’ll continue to be challenged. We’re through the worst of it, but it will continue through our secondary schools.” Longridge says if student enrolment fell lower and the status

quo was maintained the district would lose the ability provide students with the appropriate program flexibility and a full range of classes. “We looked at what would be the best configuration for learning, not just what was best for the secondary schools. At the end of the day it became apparent that moving to a 6-7-8 middle school model would be the configuration of choice. “That helps bolster the secondary schools and gives the Grade 9s coming in more choice and gives them opportunities they may not have had in the (old) middle school configuration,” the superintendent says. Longridge says the school board has been extremely reluctant to consider closing schools ... “it’s been off the table.” This year increasing focus is being placed on student “engagement” in the middle

and secondary schools. “There has been a concern throughout the province about engaging kids because there are so many other ways young people can be engaged through (social) media, through h a n d - h e l d d ev i s e s, through the distractions of touching a button on a screen,” Longridge says. The question is “how do you engage those young learners who are being bombarded constantly with electronic information and media. Instead of being afraid of that we are looking at ways of engaging young learners where they are.” Longridge says the focus is increasingly on project-based, hands-on learning. That means taking on projects in the community.

The owner of the Campbell River Common lambasted the mayor during his presentation at Tuesday night’s council meeting while seeking approval for a storage warehouse behind the mall. Allan Edie, the owner of the Ironwood Street indoor mall and storage facility, accused Mayor Walter Jakeway, president of CR Storage, of harassment in a brewing business dispute between the two men. Before Edie spoke, Jakeway left the council chambers after declaring a conflict of interest. That disappointed Edie. “I was kinda hoping the mayor would sit through this,” Edie began. “We’ve had a little bit of a challenge with the mayor in the past in regards to what we’re doing. We’ve had the challenge of someone phoning and complaining that we’re not complying with the city’s wishes, building permits, development permits, etc. And when push comes to task, no one will tell me who’s complaining. But ironically, the same day, about 20 minutes after city official building inspectors show up, so

does someone in a CR Storage half-ton. So to the fellow who has left via a conflict of interest, I just say ‘bad form.’” Edie wasn’t finished. “I would also encourage him not to harass our construction workers and people who are prepping the back side,” he said. “A leader should lead by example, not lip service. When he promotes himself by ‘Campbell River’s open for business’, somehow it comes across as ‘unless you compete with me.’” After the meeting, Jakeway was informed of Edie’s accusations. “I didn’t talk to construction workers, I didn’t say anything to them,” said Jakeway who expressed that he had the legal right to drive by Edie’s property. “His property doesn’t say ‘no entry’, it doesn’t say ‘no access.’ How’s that harassment? He’s gotta watch what he says.” Jakeway said he drove by the mall with Coun. Ron Kerr because he was curious to see why construction was going on before a development permit for the warehouse was secured. “He shouldn’t be excavating because there’s no DP (development per mit),” Jakeway

said. Troubles between Edie and the mayor star ted to simmer last October, when Edie received council approval to develop a storage area for boats, RVs and other vehicles, in the back of Campbell River Common. At a public hearing Oct. 20, before Jakeway became mayor, he expressed concern that the storage facility was violating Nunns Creek’s 30-metre riparian zone on each side of the waterway, there to protect the fish habitat. He said portions of the mall’s back parking lot encroach about 20 metres into the Riparian Reserve Zone. “This means that any uncontrolled discharge within that area could possibly impact the health of the creek and the riparian habitat,” Jakeway said. “Large RVs, boats and other vehicles operated and maintained by whomever pose a potential source of toxic material and contamination to the fish.” But Edie said Tuesday that’s not the case. “Based on environmental reports, we’re not even in the riparian zone,” Edie said. “Based on the grade levels we’ve undertaken Continued on Page 4

Council agreed and approved Edie’s development per mit to build a 30,000 square foot storage warehouse in the mall’s back parking lot. Kerr was the lone councillor opposed to the warehouse. “I feel we’re going in the wrong direction putting a building in there,” Kerr said. “The building is moving into the riparian area. I just can’t see it being a good thing for the community.” Jakeway did not vote because of his declaration of a conflict of interest.

Flu shot or mask, health workers told TOM FLETCHER BLACK PRESS

B.C. health care workers will be required to get an annual influenza vaccine or wear a mask in all patient contact areas, starting with this year’s flu season. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall announced the regulation Thursday, a first for Canada. It applies to health authority staff, doctors, volunteers, students, contractors and vendors who come into contact with patients. Free flu shots have

been made available to B.C. health care workers for years, and despite encouragement, fewer than half take advantage of them. The average vaccination rate for longterm care employees is closer to 60 per cent, but Kendall said that rate is still too low and has declined in recent years. Canada’s national advisory committee on immunization considers it a “professional responsibility” for health care workers to get their flu shot every

year, Kendall said. The mask option is being offered for workers who have a medical reason not to be vaccinated, and to avoid disputes with employees who simply refuse. “Pro g ressive discipline” would be imposed on employees who refuse both during flu season, just as it would be for those who fail to wash their hands or take precautions when coughing, Kendall said. B.C. is the first province to move to mandatory influenza protec-

tion, following the lead of U.S. jurisdictions where vaccination has increased to more than 95 per cent. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control estimates that complete vaccination of health care workers would reduce the risk for patients by 47 per cent, as well as protecting the workers from exposure

from infected patients. The annual influenza shot is made available around Thanksgiving each year, to prepare for a season that typically runs from late November until March. A new formulation is used each year to match the strains most likely to be circulating in North America during the winter.

Our View

Our suddenly silent North Island MLA We don’t need to run to the nearest political science prof to find out there’s a pretty good chance there will be a change in governing parties in British Columbia after next spring’s election. There’s never a surer We say: Trevena sign of a doomed political party will have to learn than when the chief officers begin abandoning their “leaky ship” faster to speak outside than the rats can jump overboard. her comfort zone Yes, the exodus of the B.C. Liberal Party is underway with the eager New Democrats waiting to regain control for the first time in well over a decade.

Now, let’s say the NDP does win the election and let’s go further to suggest that North Island MLA Claire Trevena retains her seat in the Legislature. Trevena has been a decent representative of her riding, well-spoken in her critiques of Liberal policies and she tows the party line. Given all that, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if Trevena was handed a cabinet post. That would indeed be nice reward for her and the constituency. The problem is this “wee issue” of Trevena’s husband, Mike, going with his wife on a governmentsponsored trip to Africa in 2010. Seems Mikey may have travelled on the taxpayers’ dime and that

doesn’t look good in the eyes of the people who expect programs and services for their tax dollars. The bigger problem is Trevena’s silence on the issue. It’s as if she’s followed the media policy of North Island MP and Indian Affairs Minister John Duncan: NEVER SPEAK ON ANY CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE EVER! That has suited Duncan quite well, but voters have come to expect a little bit more from Trevena who has never been silent for long...until now. If Trevena expects to be a part of the next ruling government, she’s going to have to get out of her “comfort zone” and speak to the hot issues, whatever they may be.

Letters

Oh, to be a Canuck

I have unfortunately been back in the United States for over one year. I miss Campbell River and the Canadian lifestyle. Canadians have much to be proud of and I’m sure that the world looks to your great nation as an example of honesty, leadership, integrity and commitment. This I cannot say about America. A presidential election is brewing within America and unfortunately money speaks louder than the will of the American people. I sincerely wish that I were Canadian. I would then have something to be proud of and be respected throughout the world. John Spaine, sent by e-mail

Pass the filter to separate oil from the manure

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

I was as surprised as anyone to hear about the plan by this newspaper’s owner, David Black, to begin regulatory work on an oil refinery for Kitimat. I’ll leave it to others to comment on the practicality of that plan, and whether it would make the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project more acceptable to B.C.’s government and population. Black Press news coverage, columns, letters to the editor and other reader comments are not affected by this project, and there has been a range of views expressed already. Whatever the merits of the refinery idea, it has advanced the debate over pipelines and the place of oil in our society.

And that’s a good thing, because as someone with a basic knowledge of chemistry and some experience in oil refining, I have noticed a lot of ignorance about the subject. Today I’d like to address some of the main misconceptions, which have been exploited by some opponents. The first one is oil pollution in general and how it gets into the environment. A global study by the Smithsonian Institution in 1995 calculated the amount of oil making its way into oceans this way: Big tanker spills accounted for 37 million gallons a year, about five per cent of the total marine oil pollution identified. By far the largest source was oil runoff from land into drains, from

oil changes, municipal and industrial wastes and other sources: 363 million gallons. Bilge cleaning and other routine ship maintenance added 137 million gallons, four times the tanker spill average. Air pollution from vehicles and industry deposited hydrocarbon particles equal to another 97 million gallons; natural seeps added 62 million gallons; offshore drilling discharges accounted for 15 million gallons. So that’s the first thing to understand. It’s not tankers and pipelines doing most of the polluting. It’s you and me. Then there is the propaganda about greenhouse gas emissions from the oil sands crude. Actor Robert Redford is one of the

highest-profile pitchmen for the false notion that “tar sands” oil generates three times the greenhouse gases as conventional oil. The facts are clear. The most widely cited source is a graph prepared by Cambridge Energy Research Associates, which shows that 75 per cent of greenhouse gases from all types of crude occur when the gasoline, jet fuel and diesel are burned by the end user. Yes, there are variations in emissions on the remaining quarter. Emissions from mined oil sands crude are slightly higher than steam extraction, which is slightly higher than conventionally drilled and pumped crude. Continued on Page A9

Fletcher: Dispelling the oily myths Continued from Page 8

The most greenhouse gas-intensive crude used in North America is California heavy crude, which is conventionally drilled. Bur ning coal produces far more greenhouse gases than oil, as University of Vic-

toria climate scientist Andrew Weaver has calculated. Two U.S. environmental groups, including the one fronted by Redford, have lately been promoting a study that suggests oil sands crude is more corrosive to pipelines. False, says the indus-

try, showing analysis of pipes that have carried diluted bitumen for decades. The Trans-Mountain pipeline has been carrying crude from Alberta to Burnaby and Washington State for more than 60 years. It has periodically carried heavy crude for 40

years, and diluted bitumen for 25 years. Some of that crude is refined in Washington and the gasoline and diesel barged up to supply B.C. gas stations. And of course Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii and all other B.C. islands depend on marine fuel

shipments. And let’s not forget the most common heavy oil used in B.C. It’s called asphalt. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress. ca

Compost battle has been won KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

And the winner is... the Revoy family! The young family of four won the city’s Compost Challenge, which saw six Campbell River families document their trials and tribulations in being the top composter. With the help of compost diva Elaine Jansen, the families embarked on a reality TV, 30-day compost journey between July 1 and Aug. 22. Each family received an iPad to record their progress. “The six families have done a great job of showing how easy it was to push through their composting barriers and bust can’tdo-compost myths,” says Amanda Taylor,

compost challenge coordinator for the City of Campbell River. “They really are community compost leaders, and their stories will inspire other Campbell River residents to start composting.” At the end of the day, James and Cathy Revoy, along with daughters Jessica and Kate-Lynn, were selected by a panel of five judges as the winner of a $500 gift certificate to a grocery store of its choice. All the participants received USB sticks with each family’s video footage and a free pass to next year’s Earth Week festivities. The families also got to keep the iPads. The Revoys were chosen based on compost quality – does it

have the right layers, are there flies, or does it smell; reduction of garbage; and the entertainment value of the video produced by the family. The Revoys learned how to properly compost and reduced their garbage by 23 pounds. The Spetch family lowered its garbage consumption the most, from 54 pounds in week one to 21.2 pounds by week three. Julina Spetch achieved the feat by putting her son in cloth diapers. T he competition wrapped up with a celebration barbecue at city hall Wednesday afternoon. A short video clip conveyed the families’ journeys, from writing an original composting song, to

taking their compost camping, to holding a mock Olympics. One family even dressed up the vegetables in its composter. Footage from the Compost Challenge will become part of a professionally-produced film debuting in October 2012. The film will be featured on Shaw TV, the city’s YouTube channel, and shown in local schools, at the 2013 community film awards and at next year’s Earth Week film festival. The contest was coordinated by the City of Campbell River and sponsored by a grant from the Comox Strathcona Waste Management. To view the family videos, go to 2012compostchallenge.blogspot.ca

Extend your summer at Rhythm on the Rock Festival season isn’t over yet on Vancouver Island and music lovers of all ages have the chance to be part of an exciting “next generation” music festival taking place at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds on Sept. 8-9. Rhythm on the Rock is a two-day grass roots music event featuring a huge variety of emerging artists from a wide range of genres including rock, reggae, indie folk, pop, electronica and funk-soul hop. Produced by Lightburn Productions and a team of talented community volunteers, Rhythm on the Rock offers music fans a taste of some of the hottest new music being produced on Vancouver Island, The Sunshine Coast and Lower Mainland. The focus is original, exciting sounds from talented up and coming musicians who are shaping the incredible

music scene on the West Coast right now. A for mer Campbell Riverite battled through biting pain to win the women’s title in this year’s Subaru Ironman Canada in Penticton. But it wasn’t easy. Gillian Clayton, who was born and raised in Campbell River, sacrificed potential careers in soccer and marathon running before finding her niche in the gruelling sport of Ironman. “I’ve done a lot less than others,” Clayton, 31, said. “Most people have done 40 or 50 Ironmans. I started as a runner and got into the sport later.” It was worth the switch when on Aug. 26 Clayton beat out a field of 13 competitors in her first time competing as a professional. With a time of 9:46:07, Clayton was nearly five minutes faster than runner-up Karen Thibodeau, who finished in 9:50:52. Clayton, who now lives in Vancouver, spent all summer preparing for the race. Her focus was on long, hilly bike rides in the mountains to prepare herself for the 5,000 foot vertical climb she had to tackle in Penticton. Clayton also cycled 180 kilometres each way to visit her parents in Black Creek and hit the pool five or six days a week. Despite Clayton’s extensive training regime, it was still a battle to the finish. “I had cramping but when I got to the line the pain was gone,”

she said. “It’s still kinda just sinking in. It’s wonderful, it’s like a dream – something I didn’t think was possible at all.” Growing up, Clayton attended Carihi and played on the Tyees senior girls soccer team under the guidance of coach John Jepson. Clayton said one of the first phone

pic Canadian women’s soccer team. Clayton switched from soccer to marathon running a few years later and ran in her first marathon – the now defunct Comox Valley Country Roads – in 2004. Since then she has competed in the Victoria Marathon each year. Clayton took up dis-

calls she received after the Ironman was from Jepson, calling to congratulate her. “It was a very successful program,” Clayton said. “John Jepson (has) done great and he’s been there a long time. “I also played volleyball, I played basketball really badly in Grade 10, I tried cross country, I tried it all because of the great sports programs at Carihi and the great coaches,” said Clayton, who moved on to Halifax’s Dalhousie University at the age of 18. At Dalhousie, Clayton pursued soccer and had the opportunity to play against members of this year’s bronze-winning Olym-

tance triathlon in 2009 and competed in her first Ironman in 2010. Since then she’s completed five half-Ironmans, five Ironmans, and one sprint triathlon, but Clayton said this year’s was special because it was her first win in her first race as a professional. “It was totally overwhelming,” she said. “It’s still a blur. They gave me a really nice plaque because it was the 30th anniversary.” Clayton also won $5,000 as the first woman to cross the finish line. Clayton, who works part-time as a physiotherapist, said she plans to return to the Penticton Ironman next year.

with remarkable hearing and they have very large ears which collect and channel sound to their brain. Echo location is used by bats and sets them apart from any other species of mammal; this is truly a technological feat. Bats are able to emit noises through their mouths and noses bouncing the sound off an object, the returning echo is collected by the ears, and after analysis, the brain informs the bat if the object if food or foe. Another fascinating

fact about bats is the food they choose to eat. There are many very specialized feeders, some only eat fruit

and flowers and in many desert areas are the only creatures that will aid in nocturnal pollination of trees or

cacti. Other bats prefer insects, frogs, small birds or smaller bats. Others, like the vampire bats, that are not found locally, feed on animal or human blood. Little brown bats prefer insect and are particularly fond of mosquitoes. During late summer and early fall they will go on a feeding frenzy consuming half their body weight in one night to increase their body fat in preparation for the winter hibernation. Reproduction is yet another unique process. Mating takes place in the fall just before hiber nation when the female has stored her extra body fat in order to survive the winter. After mating the female separates herself from the male who has no further use for her, she stores the sperm until conditions are favourable for fertilization. When delivery is imminent the female creates an “apron” with her tail and lower wing membranes to catch the emerging “pups.” Once delivered she bites the umbilical cord allowing the pups to crawl up and attach themselves to a nipple with their sharp baby teeth. For the first two weeks until their eyes are open and they grow fur, the pups are enfolded in her wings and cling to her even during her flights to

catch food. When they become too heavy they remain in the roost until they are able to fly and feed themselves. In the last few weeks Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) answered six calls from the Courtenay Recreation Centre when roosting little brown bats were disturbed during renovations to the shake roof. The bats like to cling to the cracks of tree bark and shakes seemed a good substitute. Please DO NOT attempt to rescue a bat, DO NOT touch them as this means they will have to be killed. They are highly susceptible to rabies and even if they have no symptoms (agg ressive behaviour, or out in the daytime) they can be carriers of this nasty disease. If your cat catches a bat take the cat to the vet for possible quarantine in case the bat was rabid; cats should not be able to catch a healthy bat. On the positive, bats are great insect controllers and will happily live in manmade bat boxes. Keep an eye out at dusk you too may see a bat or two. On arrival at MARS, bats are only treated by experienced volunteers who have had rabies shots.
