Dennis Adamson plans to seek the NDP nomination in the Chilliwack riding next spring. The Yale area director feels his involvement with political and dayto-day financial issues at the Fraser Valley Regional District since 2008 has given him a wide range of experience that can be carried forward to the provincial government level as MLA. “It’s time for change,” he said. “I want to try and help make a better B.C. for everybody. Fatal crash on Coquihalla
A 25-year-old man from the Chilliwack area was killed in a crash on the Coquihalla Highway Monday morning. Police said the accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. when the man lost control of his 1992 Acura Integra while crossing over a large gravel pullout just west of the Great Bear snowshed. He died instantly upon impact before the car burst into flames. “It appears the vehicle launched into a large bush area and came to rest against a tree leading to a steep slope,”

said Sgt. Peter Thiessen. “Two individuals traveling through the area tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the
flames. The road, weather and visibility conditions were excellent at the time of the crash. It is believed that excessive
speed played a factor in this crash.” Fraser Valley Traffic Services, Hope Fire Department, BC Forestry Service, BC Coroner Service and Hope Search and Rescue responded to the crash. The name of the Chilliwack area man has not been released as next of kin has yet to be notified. Any witnesses who may have information regarding this crash are asked to contact Const. Attendance at Story Time in the Park this summer was on par with numbers from last year. Organizers saw 2,332 children and families participate in the weekly literacy program in Memorial Park. Final numbers also showed a turnout of 103 in Boston Bar. “It was incredible how people were just in love with the program,” said coordinator Mallory Lothian. “I think people are recognizing that literacy is really important.” Story Time in the Park takes place in Hope, Boston Bar, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs during July and August. Families meet in their community park to listen to a
story while following along in their own copy of the book each week. They also receive free lunch and participate in an activity or entertainment. This summer’s program featured yoga, singsongs, dancing, games, and a talent contest. “We were trying to provide something for everybody and just really focus in on participation with the whole family and getting kids active this year,” said Lothian. Story Time in the Park costs between $40,000 and $60,000 to run every year, depending on the books, food and entertainment provided. The three major sponsors are Telus, Envision Financial, and Raise a Reader. Together they provide half the funding needed to run the program, with the remain-

der covered by grants and community donations. Story Time in the Park was created nine years ago to help families discover the value of reading and develop lifelong literacy skills. Since then, there’s been a 15 per cent improvement in cognitive and language development with children entering kindergarten. “It’s really important to have a program like this because 42.3 per cent of kids entering kindergarten in Hope weren’t ready in 2010. The provincial average is 29 per cent,” said Lothian. The importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies will be celebrated worldwide on Sept. 8 during International Literacy Day.

The new production by Hope Performing Arts Community Theatre is based loosely on the history of Steamboat Mountain. Written and directed by Cheryl Lynne Lacey, Fool’s Gold is a musical comedy complete with gold panners, Cancan dancers, a gun fight, two bumbling con men, Snake Eyes Calhoun, and Grizzly Dave the Mountaineer. “I wanted to do something that’s historical and that has a great plot,” said Lacey. “It’s not a serious play, but the themes are that crime doesn’t pay and greed doesn’t help.” When the mayor tries to trick the town into believing he has hired a new sheriff for the betterment of the community, he in turn gets conned by two drifters seeking their fortune. There are mistaken identities, lost relatives found, deceit, deception and mayhem before the town realizes it finally has a history and tales to tell future generations. Fool’s Gold features a cast of about 20 local performances, spanning six generations in age. “I think that really adds to the play,” said Lacey.

Sentences must protect children
Canada’s crime rate is at a 30-year low, but despite this good news story, people still feel the justice system is too lax on criminals. Recent sentencings, like that of shamed senior RCMP officer Monty Robinson, give credence to people’s cries of foul. For obstructing justice in a hit-and-run death, he received a small conditional sentence and a temporary curfew. This is in contrast to the sentencing of the Stanley Cup rioters. Some young men being sentenced for taking part in the riot are receiving seven to nine months jail time for their part. This may seem either harsh or just in the eyes of the public. But in comparison, an Abbotsford man recently convicted of child pornography received only 18 months. A conditional sentence is a common sentence for the crime, even if the perpetrator is not just looking at child porn but distributing it. Convicted pedophiles usually do see the inside of a jail cell, but sentences range and often aren’t longer than two years. It is particularly troubling that in this study on crime rates, the offence which saw the largest increase was child pornography, which jumped 40 per cent in 2011 from 2010, say police. The judicial system doesn’t appear to take sexual crimes against children as seriously as it does rioters. The provincial government wanted to send a strong message that those who riot will pay for the crime they committed. The message was heard loud and clear by our judges who by B.C. judicial standards, are handing down harsh sentences. If our government can carry that kind of weight and influence with the provincial judicial system in sending a message of deterrence for rioting, can it not send an even stronger message to protect our children from predators? – Black Press
Separating oil from manure
B.C. Views Tom Fletcher I was as surprised as anyone to hear about the plan by this newspaper’s owner, David Black, to begin regulatory work on an oil refinery for Kitimat. I’ll leave it to others to comment on the practicality of that plan, and whether it would make the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project more acceptable to B.C.’s government and population. Black Press news coverage, columns, letters to the editor and other reader comments are not affected by this project, and there has been a range of views expressed already. Whatever the merits of the refinery idea, it has advanced the debate over pipelines and the place of oil in our society. And that’s a good thing,

because as someone with a basic knowledge of chemistry and some experience in oil refining, I have noticed a lot of ignorance about the subject. Today I’d like to address some of the main misconceptions, which have been exploited by some opponents. The first one is oil pollution in general and how it gets into the environment. A global study by the Smithsonian Institution in 1995 calculated the amount of oil making its way into oceans this way: Big tanker spills accounted for 37 million gallons a year, about five per cent of the total marine oil pollution identified. By far the largest source was oil runoff from land into drains, from oil changes, municipal and industrial wastes and other sources: 363 million gallons. Bilge cleaning and other routine ship maintenance added 137 million gallons, four times the tanker spill average. Air pollution from vehicles and

three times the greenhouse gases as conventional oil. The facts are clear. The most widely cited source is a graph prepared by Cambridge Energy Research Associates, which shows that 75 per cent of greenhouse gases from all types of crude occur when the gasoline, jet fuel and diesel are burned by the end user. Yes, there are variations in emissions on the remaining quarter. Emissions from mined oil sands crude are slightly higher than steam extraction, which is slightly higher than conventionally drilled and pumped crude. The most greenhouse gas-intensive crude used in North America is California heavy crude, which is conventionally drilled. Burning coal produces far more greenhouse gases than oil, as University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver has calculated. Two U.S. environmental groups, including the one fronted by Red-

ford, have lately been promoting a study that suggests oil sands crude is more corrosive to pipelines. False, says the industry, showing analysis of pipes that have carried diluted bitumen for decades. The Trans-Mountain pipeline has been carrying crude from Alberta to Burnaby and Washington state for more than 60 years. It has periodically carried heavy crude for 40 years, and diluted bitumen for 25 years. Some of that crude is refined in Washington and the gasoline and diesel barged up to supply B.C. gas stations. And of course Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii and all other B.C. islands depend on marine fuel shipments. And let’s not forget the most common heavy oil used in B.C. It’s called asphalt. Event keeps Terry’s dream alive when his cancer which had spread made him end his run. That was 1981, the year he died. A sad, sad day. It is time again for us all to do our part in helping keep Terry’s dream alive. As he said in Toronto, “somewhere the hurting has to stop.” Please take part or support our local Terry Fox Run/Walk on Sunday, Sept. 16. Joggers, walkers, cyclists, baby stroll-
ers or wheelchairs are all welcome. Go as far as you can or want to. The official route is five kilometres. Please bring a friend or neighbour and a cheque or cash – no amount is too small. Donations by the way are tax deductible, so it is really easy to give. Did you know that 83 cents of every dollar donated goes to research – a very high amount for chari-
table donations. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the event starts at 9 a.m. See you at the Hope Recreation Centre! Once again, three generations of “Enns girls” will be participating, including sevenyear-old Katerina, and 14-year-old Joe Poulton of Sunshine Valley. Eileen Shepherd Volunteer and cancer survivor

Liberals playing ‘cheap political games’
Re: Responding constructively to firefighters, Letters (Aug. 1) Mr. Goodale - who sat as a member of the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments for 13 years, including a time controlling the nation’s purse strings as Minister of Finance - has decided that now is the time to feign interest in our nation’s firefighters, now that he’s safely removed from the governing benches with no prospect of returning any time soon.
If Mr. Goodale believed that a costly new program such as the one he now proposes was a responsible public policy, he had the power and the authority to implement it when he sat at the cabinet table. Perhaps 13 years in power wasn’t quite enough time for him to get around to this idea. Or perhaps this is just a cynical political ploy, using firefighters as pawns. The Conservative government values and appreciates the sacrifice
and the service of firefighters. It is why we implemented a $3,000 per year volunteer firefighter tax credit – a policy which Goodale and his Liberal colleagues actually voted against! While the Liberals may choose to play cheap political games and make empty promises, we are delivering real results for our firefighters. Mark Strahl, Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP

B.C. drivers have been left behind by government Re: ICBC Mishandled, Editorial (Aug. 22) I believe the writer is correct in that ICBC has been mishandled by Christy Clark’s government, but privatization isn’t the answer. Independent studies by the Consumer’s Association of Canada and Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives show public auto gives the best value to customers, better coverage for less money. Public insurance systems also have lower rates of insurance fraud and are able, like ICBC has, to
invest in road safety and driver education. Executive salaries are too high, but that’s a problem that’s even worse in the private sector. The most pressing issue and one not addressed in the review is the fact that the government is taking over one billion dollars from ICBC’s profits into general revenue by 2013 – that isn’t what ICBC was designed for. ICBC was designed to work on a break-even basis where profits would be reinvested in the company and its workers, put towards
road safety, and given back to drivers in the form of lower rates. The ICBC review shows that mismanagement resulted in a system where executives and government got
all the corporation’s profits while ICBC employees and B.C. drivers have been left behind. Brian Harder Fraser Valley Labour Council President

HBC Heritage Trail improvements completed A crew has been busy upgrading the Hudson’s Bay Company (1849) Heritage Trail this summer. Coordinated by the Hope Mountain Centre with funding from the New Pathways to Gold Society, the project successfully completed three overnight campsites and improved many kilometers of the historic trail. The camps are equipped with tent pads, bear-proof food cache, toilet, fire ring, and benches. Thousands of dollars in donated tools, materials and volunteer labour have added value to the project. Last week, Brad Fandrich and Valley Helicopters donated a free helicopter load of construction materials to Camp Du Chevreuil, enabling the crew to complete the last camp located high on the slopes of Mount Davis in the Upper Sowaqua Valley.

While improvements will continue to be made each year, the 50-km trail is now open and ready for hikers and horseback riders to enjoy. Existing road networks allow easy access so
that people can travel short sections of the trail if they don’t want to tackle the entire route in one trip. Hope Mountain Centre intends to market and promote the trail, starting in 2013.

Local hockey player signs with Thunderbirds The Fraser Valley team is part of the B.C. major midget league Hope Standard
BARRY STEWART / THE STANDARD
Hope Minor Hockey product Dale Howell has signed with the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the B.C. major midget league. The 16-yearold Hope Secondary student will be playing his home games in Chilliwack’s Prospera Centre before the Chiefs’ Saturday night games.
Meteoric is a word that shouldn’t be used too often — but this story just can’t be told without using it at least once. Minor hockey has basically two streams for players to work in, from the atom division and up: recreational or “house” hockey and various tiers of “rep hockey” for players seeking a high-performance experience. Once you decide to stay in the house league, your chances of breaking into rep diminish as the years ramp up. Travel and cost have been factors preventing Hope & District Minor Hockey Association from offering rep hockey for most of its 35-plus years, but the chief challenge has been numbers. If you don’t have enough talented players — and enough families that want to support the extra travel and related costs — you keep things basic. That was the scenario that Hope’s Dale Howell found himself in, right through his first year of bantam. Then he decided to try out for a Chilliwack rep team in 2010. After a number of years of blockades around the turn of the century, Chilliwack Minor Hockey has opened its rep leagues to Hope and Agassiz/Harrison players... but understandably, an out-of-towner would have to be markedly better to be chosen above a Chilliwack-based player. Howell was selected to Chilliwack’s top bantam team, the triple-A. Last year, stepping into midget rep, he fended off second and third-year players and made the AAA team again. Now 16 years old, Howell just got back from the junior B Beaver Valley Nitehawks’ camp in Fruitvale, east of Trail. The Nitehawks want him — but the Grade 11 Hope Secondary student has other plans. He chose to play for the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the B.C. major midget league. “It was a good camp,” said Howell on Monday, “but major midget is a good league. I’ve got

to do what is best for me.” Before he headed to Fruitvale — hometown of NHL players Adam Deadmarsh and Barrett Jackman — Howell had already been carded by the Thunderbirds. Though he chose to come back home, the left-shooting left winger said he can still play up to five regular season games with the Nitehawks as an affiliated player (AP), as well as playoff games. T-Birds’ coach, Troy Campbell, has different plans for Howell. “I’ve got to talk to him about that. I’d like to get him as an AP with the Chilliwack Chiefs,” said Campbell. “It would be a better situation for him. “Dale tried out with us last year,” added the coach. “We saw a lot of potential in him. He’s a good skater with great hockey sense. He sees the ice well — and we see him as a set-up guy on offense. It’s a huge step up for him.” The T-Birds have after-school practices planned for Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Abbotsford — and Thursdays at Twin Rinks in Sardis, giving Howell and his two teammates from last year, Kyle Westeringh and Sean Longfellow, a shorter commute. Howell only has his learner’s drivers licence so far — so his mom, Denise, will be busy this winter. “We’ll be playing our home games on Saturdays at Prospera, right before the Chiefs’ games,” said coach Campbell. This will give junior and college scouts an easy opportunity to see the upand-comers. “It’s free admission for our games.” At 5’10” and 165 pounds, Howell isn’t going to bowl over anybody in this high-paced league. He has other assets, which include, “Being smart with the puck and making players around me better. And I’ve always relied on my feet.” Howell describes himself as an A and B student and he plans to take biology and chemistry at HSS this year. “The main thing I want to get from playing hockey is an education,” he asserted.
